Starting point is 00:01:56 and addiction medicine specialist Dr. Drew Pinsky. You're listening to The Adam and Dr. Drew Show. Yeah, you know. Yeah, you know. I just bring it Show. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I said, get it on. And when I say get it on, I mean get it on, get it on, get it on, get it on.
Starting point is 00:02:13 Get on in the morning now. Get on, get on, get on. Get it on, get it on, get it on, get it on. Tell you what I'm going to do, Drew. Drop trial? No, I'm going to make love to you. All right. Yeah, I had food poisoning last week.
Starting point is 00:02:36 Okay. Now, I didn't know whether I had the flu or food poisoning. Okay. Now, first thing that started happening was on the toilet with the diarrhea. And then the second thing that started happening was I'm going to yak. While you were engaged in said diarrhea or immediately following?
Starting point is 00:02:59 Because the really fun game is when they're both going simultaneously. I did have that. You had it both at the same time. That tends to be more food poisoning. Yeah. Especially when you can't control the vomiting. I didn't have a temperature as best I could tell.
Starting point is 00:03:15 And usually if it's a viral infection with vomiting, there'll be fever. Right. So because I didn't have the temperature, I thought probably food poisoning. Yeah. So because I didn't have the temperature, I thought probably food poisoning. Also seemed to kick in in about the right time, sort of 8 to 12 hour mark from which seems to be I found that the food poisoning doesn't really have a dimmer switch. The flu kind of coast to a stop after a number of days. The food poisoning that I've had in the past runs its course hard in about five or six hours. And then at some point you're not sick anymore. Just done.
Starting point is 00:04:11 You're run down and depleted from the last six hours, but you're not sick. Right. That would be staph food poisoning. Staph. Very typical. And so that was that. But I was thinking, what should I take or what should I do? Now, you can hydrate, but when you hydrate, you just yak it up immediately.
Starting point is 00:04:32 And then I started thinking about, is there Motrin? Is there Tylenol? Like, what is there in that situation? When you're vomiting, there's not much you can do, right? Except you can take anti-vomiting medicine, right? Like Zofran or Compazine, that kind of thing. That could make you feel a lot better. Sometimes, though, food poisoning kind of needs to run its course a little bit.
Starting point is 00:04:54 But it's not necessarily COVID. Like staph, which you pretty clearly had here. Staph is a toxin that the bacteria produce that builds up and typically in like dairy type stuff, like mayonnaise or do you have any sour cream or anything or cheese much even in your breakfast burrito whatever you ate i had a i had a sandwich and it had cheese on it could have been it there was some uh tomato and there's some onion no mayonnaise i don't know people i talked I have conversations with people behind the counter of places that they own, and that conversation is like they were camping and I broke into their tent at 4 a.m. and started asking questions.
Starting point is 00:05:37 Like I go, is it breakfast sandwich? Can I have some tomato on that? Tomato? Yes. Could I have tomato? No, it's not tomato. Yes, but could i have tomato no it's not tomato yes but but can i have tomato you want tomato this can't be that this can't be that bizarre conversation to have you sell you sell 750 units of this breakfast sandwich all day, every day at the Denver airport. People are bound to ask, does it have a tomato slice on it?
Starting point is 00:06:13 Or can I have? Or I don't want a tomato slice on it. It's just bound to happen. You would think. Where's the, huh? No. What? Cannot have.
Starting point is 00:06:23 Cannot have. I'm like, tomato. Does it have tomato? Can I have tomato? No. Tomato. Like, I get it. There's a language barrier, but it shouldn't be for tomato.
Starting point is 00:06:38 At a certain point, it was funny. I said, what kind of cheese does it have on it? What cheese? What kind of cheese does it have on it? What cheese? What kind of cheese? Oh. He had to turn to his left and ask his wife. Why don't you know what? This must come up.
Starting point is 00:07:00 My marvel in life is I say to people all the time, this must come up all the time. My marvel in life is I say to people all the time, this must come up all the time. Doesn't every third person who comes in here, considering there are four major cheese groups, there's your Swiss cheese family, there's your American cheese, which is not cheese, there's your cheddar, and there's, I don't know, Havarti or blue cheese or something. This must come up a lot. Why the confusion with everything? And are you, is this purely a language barrier? Are you just fucking dumb?
Starting point is 00:07:34 Because you've got to be dumb. This can't just be a language thing. Or sort of a lack of care to focus. Just like when you ask some people questions and they look at you like what i'm not asking like how frequently do you engage in intercourse with your wife i'm asking about your fucking breakfast sandwich you sell it there's bound to be questions bound to be and it's not like there aren't a few tens of thousands of people walking past you at the Denver airport. The Denver airport had 750 million people in it. It was fucking packed.
Starting point is 00:08:11 It was packed. So maybe that sandwich is what did me in. So, right. What did you ask? That sandwich was, by the way, that was an act of God because we were the first flight out southwest, like gate 22 into Burbank. And at some point they went up. There's a delay and we're moving your gate. And we got like an hour delay and they moved us to like gate 45. And we walked all the way across the airport and then we got there and instead of what i was doing was getting onto the plane now we're parked there for
Starting point is 00:08:50 an hour and i'm parked next to the sandwich place and i'm just sitting there and i'm going well if we're going to be here for an hour i could use a breakfast sandwich and thus the food poisoning so that's how that's how it works so uh you could also take anti-motility medicine like Imodium if the diarrhea keeps going. But again, sometimes you kind of want the diarrhea to kind of run its course. Well, this is a good thing. But let me say this to me, Drew, and for everyone who's listening, because I am this guy. And I think we're all this guy. We're all the, well, the earthquake will hit and then we'll go, oh, we should have, ooh, can we drink out of the aquarium? Damn, I should have put away some water. Like, that's how we are.
Starting point is 00:09:37 And as I was yakking and as I was diarrhea-ing and as I was, I was a goddamn mess. Literally. I was, I was a mess. Did you make it home? Oh yeah. I made it, I made it home, but I was a goddamn mess. Imagine if that had happened on the road. Oh, it would have been a mess.
Starting point is 00:10:00 I was a mess. And as I was a mess, I was like going through the closet finding the tupperware of kids kids everything you know kids chewable this and that i was looking at like bubblegum flavored chewable tylenol and i was like is this gonna can i eat this like how much should i eat it's for kids it's for 60 pound people like i'm 200 pounds should i have five of these i remember and i was kind of thinking about you and i was thinking about what should i eat or what could i do to and i had no idea and what i realized now is if i had half a fucking brain i would just have my you got the boom, here's your little Tupperware container.
Starting point is 00:10:46 You have diarrhea, here's your Tupper, you're nauseated, here's your Tupperware container that I would just put away a couple of containers instead of having to rifle. I'm in the kitchen opening doors, looking through pot, through skillets and pots, looking for junk that doesn't exist. Desperation. Desperation. At some point I was like asking how the thermometer worked. You know, because everything
Starting point is 00:11:12 is like kids, kids this and kids that and kids everything else. So what should, if you're listening, let's just say you have diarrhea or you have nausea or you have a cold or you have a flu. I would like to put away like four different Tupperwares of that shit.
Starting point is 00:11:32 Some of it is prescription. Okay. So diarrhea is Imodium. Okay. Not prescription? Not prescription. However, the most common cause of infectious diarrhea in our country is caused by bacteria that can be treated with Cipro. So you might – but then again, you can call your doctor and get that if it keeps going through the imodium.
Starting point is 00:11:55 Okay? The cold is really an upper respiratory infection. That is yellow – green out of the sinuses. That's congestion. That's congestion. That's cough. And that is decongestants and mucus-thinning agents like Mucinex. So you can get like dextromethorphan for the sore throat. You can get some sort of quercetin, say, which has quercetin D, a decongestant in it, and
Starting point is 00:12:21 get like a Mucinex. Because I'm looking at like generic for ibuprofen and a kid's chewable and stuff like that. I'm like, I don't even know what this stuff is. It's just really for pain and fever. Tylenol? Pain and fever. Pain and fever. Motrin, same thing.
Starting point is 00:12:35 Although Motrin will also help with joint and muscle pains and aches and things. But really, if you have – Tylenol's generally better if you have fever or pain. And then the upper respiratory infection, sometimes you can use an inhaler. So you might want to have a doctor prescribe an albuterol inhaler. But we like this idea of just having a little kit with a label on it because it's all just one big cluster fucking mess. And I'm not sure which to take. It's interesting. It's almost like somebody ought to manufacture these things.
Starting point is 00:13:06 Little kits. It's an interesting idea. Yeah, I don't know. Go look online, Gary, and see if they have that. I guarantee there's some kid shit. Fuck the kids. If I go through another fucking bubble gum flavored this or that, I was like, fuck these kids. What about the breadwinner here?
Starting point is 00:13:22 I know there are definitely certain doctors out there who will prescribe them, especially for travel. If you're going international, they'll give you a kit that's got a little of everything. But let me see what's available on the retail side. Look at the travel kits, too. It'll be interesting to see. But the version of this is basically that thing you put in the trunk of your car that's got the jumper cables and the flare and the triangle reflector, right? Yeah. All right.
Starting point is 00:13:46 Go ahead. Let me talk to us about something much more pleasant. Cleanse your palate. Stop thinking about Adam's vomiting and diarrhea for a second, and let's think about ButcherBox. These guys deliver healthy, 100% grass-fed, finished beef, free-range organic chicken, heritage-breed pork. I'm getting so hungry thinking about this.
Starting point is 00:14:05 Wild Alaskan salmon, direct to your door monthly. The color of these meats are just spectacular. You can freeze them. You can keep them. They're wrapped in this sort of very carefully wrapped container so you can use them anytime. And, man, you open them and, boom, on the barbecue they're done. Choose from four curated boxes or customize your own box. Each comes with 9 to 11 pounds of meat, enough for 24 individual meals.
Starting point is 00:14:28 Free shipping anywhere in the U.S. No commitment. Can't, well, the continental U.S., not Hawaii or Alaska, of course. No commitment. You can cancel anytime. And free bacon for life for your subscription plus $20 off. So you'll get free bacon for life for the life of your subscription. I beg your pardon. Free bacon for the life of your subscription plus
Starting point is 00:14:48 $20 off with the promo code ADS at checkout. $20 off promo code ADS at checkout. You'll get that discount. You'll get the bacon. Again, that's a pack of bacon free in every single box for the life of your subscription plus the $20 off. That's all with the promo code
Starting point is 00:15:03 ADS at ButcherBox. Hey, Jay, 37, Los Angeles. Hey, Adam. Hey, Drew. Hey, there. What's going on, man? All right. So I've been on a pretty good run of having red wine every night to kind of wind down.
Starting point is 00:15:21 And so recently, you know, I've been, I've been, uh, I've been planning on going on a trip this summer. And so I've kind of realized that I need to cut down on the alcohol, get my diet down. Cause I want to, you know, hang out on the beach with the cool kids, but now I have it in my head because I've heard, I listened to the show and I've heard Dr. Drew say before that, like, you know, if you've been on a long period of drinking and you suddenly stop, you're in danger of having a seizure. All right, let's talk how much you've been drinking. That's really the question. Let's say like a bottle of cab every night. So one 750 milliliter usual bottle of cab, right? Yeah. You should be fine. You can stop
Starting point is 00:16:01 suddenly. You're going to miss it. It's more of a habit at this point. Sure, sure. But you're not going to have a seizure. Because if you were, that's just one a day. That's it. That's all you drink every day? I mean, give or take, yeah. Like maybe one in a glass, but never two. Never two bottles?
Starting point is 00:16:18 No. Yeah, you're not going to have a seizure. But that's not good for your liver. I mean, that's something. Yeah, I know, I know. Well, start tapering and see how that works. He can either taper or cut it off, yeah. Well, I don't mind going cold turkey.
Starting point is 00:16:30 Like, it's something I've done before, especially when I want to start working out or dieting. Yeah, you're going to be fine. But now it's like, you know, I have Dr. Drew in the back of my head, like, you know. Now I'm standing in front of you in your head with a big thumbs up, all right? Okay, great.
Starting point is 00:16:45 That's what I wanted to hear. There you go. Thanks, right? Okay, great. That's what I wanted to hear. There you go. Thanks, Jay. Thanks, Jay. That's an interesting mentality. Some people need or I don't want to say like, but they need that cold turkey or they like that cold turkey. I'm that for sure. You're that person.
Starting point is 00:17:02 You respond to what are we doing and then let's do it. Let's do it all in. And I don't respond to that cold turkey. I'm that, for sure. You're that person. You respond to, what are we doing? And then let's do it. Let's do it all in. And I don't respond to that at all. I'm like, I still like my stuff, so let's tone it down or go a different route. The cold turkey feels like a loss to me. I feel like I still want it out there that I can enjoy this. I still want it out there that I can enjoy this. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:30 Otherwise, and I think you probably feel, because you're a man of exquisite passion. Passion, passion, passion. I think you feel like one scoop of rice, you may not be able to stop at that emotionally or something. You have to eliminate it. It's not emotional. It's how my drive systems work. Mm-hmm. I know – Well, how much of that's emotional?
Starting point is 00:17:47 Or I don't know what is emotional. What is a drive system? Well, that's an interesting question. People don't think about this enough. We have systems that drive us and motivate us. And then all the other systems of the brain respond to that, right? It's not emotional. I mean our drives can have an emotional element to them.
Starting point is 00:18:02 But generally it's just – the drives get set very young. They can get fucked up very young too. But they are as much as anything maybe biological, right? Like you said, I've got the passion thing. And so if I start rolling down the hill, I know just not roll down the hill because it's like picking up steam. It's literally like rolling down a hill. Sometimes sometimes you roll down a hill you just can't stop right that's what it feels like with me with certain things and food is definitely one of those things yeah i think everybody has an element of once they reach in and take that
Starting point is 00:18:39 cookie they reach for the second cookie more easily. I have a wiring where I can overdo it with the cookies and then not touch another cookie for six months. I don't have that roll down the hill. I can do that too. I think you can. But I don't want to have to binge that particular night. No, I think what you do is you impose this thing like a Japanese student where you go,
Starting point is 00:19:08 well, you could get a B- on this test and still finish with a super high GPA, and you go, I didn't want to let that... There's two approaches. You ready? I don't like to talk about cars. No, nearly as
Starting point is 00:19:24 much as you don't like to talk about yourself or your family. No, but I will this one time, if you grant me. I would like that. Just once. Just this once. There are guys who sort of have it in that there's cars, there's boxing, there's whatever. You can go, oh, you're so far ahead in the points race that with one more race left, even if you came in seventh,
Starting point is 00:19:49 you would still win the championship. And someone goes, I'm coming in first. And you're like, yeah, but you got to work harder and you could risk some injury. And they're like, I want to win this race. So there's that person who goes, I'm coming. And you go, why not just play it safe, come in fifth. You'll still win the champion.
Starting point is 00:20:07 You'll be the champion. And like, no, no, I'm going, I'm charging for the head of the pack. They're boxers who they've won 11 rounds and now it's the 12th round and they should be moving around and getting out of the way. But they won in. And they risk, you risk a knockout. But you still go, I don't want to take my foot off the accelerator. And there's some sort of thought. I've got a little of that. There's some sort of thought.
Starting point is 00:20:32 It's like if I start coasting now, I may just coast into my next fight or something. Like I may take this negative momentum into my next world. See, you're putting too much of a cognitive process on it. The way it feels to me is, no, it's gratifying to keep this going, right? Yeah. There's a gratification associated with it
Starting point is 00:20:52 that I can't overcome. So I'm going to go with it. Does that make sense? As opposed to, I'm not thinking about what's next or anything else. You're like, this is so exciting.
Starting point is 00:21:00 This is so gratifying. I'm going with it. I do. And pardon me for putting a slightly negative spin on it, but I have to because it's you and it's not me. There's a sense that I get from you that you feel like you might lose control if you don't hang on tight, like you can't let it wiggle around too much. You may drop it.
Starting point is 00:21:27 Yes. You're right. I always got that sense of you like when people go, hey, here's what we got to do. You go, let's do it now. Because it's feeling like if we do it later, it may be too late or too much later. You're conflating two things that are related.
Starting point is 00:21:41 Okay. One is the anxiety thing, which I know drives you crazy, which is let's just get down. Let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go. One is the anxiety thing, which I know drives you crazy, which is, let's just get down. Let's go. Let's go. Let's go. That's an anxiety thing. But the other part is the control thing, which is part of anxiety, right? And you're right. In many of the circumstances where
Starting point is 00:21:55 I fear I'm going to roll down the hill, I probably could control it. I probably could. But I don't want to risk it. Bruce, 51, Rhode Island. Yes, hi. Hi, Adam. Hi, Dr. Okay. But I don't want to risk it. Bruce, 51, Rhode Island. Yes, hi. Hi, Adam. Hi, Dr. Drew.
Starting point is 00:22:09 Bruce. Hi, guy. Hi, guy. Hey. Oh, yeah. I just wanted to call. I've been having this sense of obligation to call you guys and thank you both, especially Adam for the entertainment and Dr. Drew for the
Starting point is 00:22:26 knowledge. And it's just with regards to, especially when Dr. Drew has been talking about the elderly and the aging process and how, you know, people go downhill after 70. And we went through that with, you know, with my father and my father-in-law. Oh, boy. And then my wife with a severe terminal illness. Oh, my God. And it's just the casual listening to all of the advice really helped get me through a lot of ugliness.
Starting point is 00:23:07 Happy we could be there. What happened to your wife? So she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 and then underwent the bilateral mastectomy and chemotherapy. But it was HER2 positive, and it came back in 2017 with metastases to the brain. Oh, my God. And specifically, leptomeningeal carcinomatosis. Oh, geez.
Starting point is 00:23:37 Awful. Yeah, exactly. So it spreads all over the meninges. So she's gone? All the way down the spine, even sometimes. Yes, she passed in January. How old was she? She was 50.
Starting point is 00:23:51 But she, I mean, thankfully between, you know, she didn't say no to any treatments. And between the full brain radiation and clinical trials, She had 16 months with us and we were blessed even though it was a long road. Oh my God. We're going to get Joe Biden in office because he said
Starting point is 00:24:18 he's going to cure cancer. He did? Yeah. I'm insulting. Why? You don't like cancer? Gary, you've got to find the clip of Joe Biden saying he's going to cure cancer. Here's what I like. I like Bruce's attitude. I do, too. Bruce just goes, we got 18 months.
Starting point is 00:24:36 He's supposed to, God damn it, 18. You know what I mean? Yeah. We were blessed. 18 months. That is a good attitude, man. Yeah. Well, thank you.
Starting point is 00:24:44 Do you have kids, Bruce? I do. I have three girls. 20, 17, and 13. What noise would you make, Bruce? I thought he was going to say 20, 25, and 28. Okay, you're the 13.
Starting point is 00:25:00 No. Yeah. But, Dr. Drew, you're right. Actually, I talked to a grief counselor about that because it was almost like as a caregiver, you go into that mode, that attitude and that mode of almost autopilot. And then afterwards, you're living with the, for lack of a better word, the post-traumatic stress. That's what it is. That's exactly what it is.
Starting point is 00:25:24 It all lets down and then you're left with the PTSD. Exactly right. So, Bruce, are you working? Yes. Yes. Yeah, I do. I do work. I have a great employer and a great manager that gave me whatever time I needed.
Starting point is 00:25:39 I used to drive up to Boston once a week for treatments. I used to drive up to Boston once a week for treatments, and then I spent four weeks, sorry, about three weeks, three to four weeks at home when she was on hospice. And your employer was very accommodating? Yes, yes. I feel that means you're excellent at what you do or not that good. It's not in the middle. You know what I mean? Either you're so good we can't afford to or let's take a few weeks off. We're not going to notice.
Starting point is 00:26:16 So it's one or the other. And maybe that you're excellent is what I'm saying. It's possible. It'll be that you're well-liked. That's part of excellent. Part of excellent. excellent yeah okay all right we'll go with that all right well it says i feel like for you and what you've gone through and what you're doing and maybe this is just a guy thing but i i feel like when you throw men can get so
Starting point is 00:26:37 much meaning from work oh yeah women get some meaning but they don't get the kind of sense of being you know and and when a guy's going through a tough patch, I feel like just throwing yourself into work is probably the most productive. It's a way, you know, you could throw yourself into a bottle or into a fetal position, but I just feel like throwing yourself into your work is, it's one of the best forms of therapy for a patch, a time in your life that you have to get through. Chris? Yes, it is. Yep.
Starting point is 00:27:15 All right. Yep. It's a useful distraction. Thanks. And keep listening. We'll keep talking. And we have Biden talking about curing cancer. You know, a lot of you understand what loss is,
Starting point is 00:27:30 and when loss occurs, you know that people come up to you and tell you, I understand if you lose a husband, a wife, a son, a daughter, a family member, and lots of times you feel like saying, you know, they say, I know how you feel. And if they hadn't, you look at them, you know, they mean well, but you say, you have no idea how I feel. But when it happens to you, you know, that's why I've worked so hard my career to make sure that I promise you, if I'm elected president, you're going to see the single most important thing that changes in America is we're going to cure cancer. That's another issue.
Starting point is 00:28:15 There's so many different kinds of cancer. It doesn't make sense to say that. You're going to cure cancer. As though it's one thing. It's like, I'm going to cure illness. Well, hold on, Drew. Can I say something? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:25 Yeah. Yeah. Think of a sports organization. There's the New York Yankees. And then there are all the individual players who work with the organization. But I'm saying I'm going to get rid of the organization. Oh. See what I'm saying? Sure.
Starting point is 00:28:43 I'm not going to go after all the players. Or any of the people working. Just the organization. Oh. See what I'm saying? Sure. I'm not going to go after all the players. Or any of the people working. Just the organization. I get rid of the organization, and then they're all out. I see. See what I'm saying? Yeah, yeah. So when I say I'm going to get rid of cancer, I mean lung, pancreatic, I mean cancer.
Starting point is 00:28:57 You see what I'm saying? Just the word. The organization. When I get rid of cancer, it'll be all forms of cancer. Of course. It won't be one cancer. Right. That's what Joe Biden's going to do.
Starting point is 00:29:09 Because that's what you need. You need an old guy with no medical background to get rid of cancer. It's such a weird thing to say. He's going to focus on cancer. Like, you know how Garcetti's number one focus is on the homeless? Yes, I do. Okay. Well, there you go.
