Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome back to the Adam and Dr. Drew Show Classics. I'm your host, Big Brother Jake, host of the Big Brother Jake podcast on the Podcast One Network. Check that out when you can. But we got another good one for you here on the Adam and Dr. Drew Show. Alright, first up today is episode 209 titled, The Corolla Commitment. That aired on January 31st, 2015, and Adam and Dr. Drew discuss what Adam likes to do in the spare time and how he likes his life the way it is. Check it out. Good day, Dr. Drew. I'll say good day to you, sir.
Starting point is 00:00:35 I'm always amazed. I have so much to fucking talk to you about. It's weird. Let's talk about it, man. That's weird. We've been talking too much for 10 years. I love shit that Dr. Drew does. I have so much to fucking talk to you about. It's weird. Let's talk about it, man. That's weird. We've been talking too much for 10 years. I have stuff shit to talk to you about.
Starting point is 00:00:50 Isn't that weird? No, I mean, I don't think it's weird because there are people- Life goes on, I guess. In life who I look forward very much to speaking to. Well, you're certainly not one of those. There are people I don't wanna talk to ever again, like my mom's friends. But then there's Dr. Drew.
Starting point is 00:01:13 You're a guy who's interested in things, and there are people that aren't, and I'm interested in the people that aren't interested in things. Yeah, it kind of gets me interested too. Whether... But that's part of being interested. Well, tell me this. Do people decide, and I do think this is a mistake that people make, people decide that they're not fill in the blank. They're not into whatever. Not into fill the blank. Well, I'll give you for instance I'm a car guy. Yeah, but most the people I speak to are not car guys not in this world You know when I work construction, yeah, I work talk to a lot of car guys. Yeah, but in this world comedians
Starting point is 00:01:59 Actors and things like that. Yeah That's much actors and things like that. Yeah. Not so much. Matt Fondelier, my assistant, is not a car guy. There's a new breed of cat. Strangely ironic, he sits amongst cars and raised cars all day. He's miserable. All day. Not a car guy, but not many guys are these days, and if they are, they're not in this world, this virtual world, this computerized world. They're out on the construction side. So, oftentimes I'll speak to people and they're not car guys.
Starting point is 00:02:33 So I will say, they'll go, well what do you like to do when you're not doing a podcast or writing a book? And I'll say, I go out and race Paul Newman's race cars. And they go, well there you go. And then we get on to the next subject. Now, they they're not car people and they've decided they're not car people and they heard the word race car. Yeah. They just hear white noise. Well they heard the word car. Yeah. Yeah. And they're not interested because they're not car people. But obviously there's a lot more to this and there's a lot more interest if you're mining for interest like you are for gold there's a lot more to this and there's a lot more interest if you're mining
Starting point is 00:03:06 for interest like you are for gold, there's a ton here. Oh, sure. What car? His race car. Did he own that race car? How did you learn to race? Where do you race? Where did he race?
Starting point is 00:03:18 How did you get the car? How much of the cars? Yeah. And who and with whom? Other cars? Other cars? Yeah, yeah, the guys like you. Celebrity, whatever. Whatever, there's a million questions asked, but you heard the word car and you said there you go. Now, Drew, not that person.
Starting point is 00:03:35 No. As a matter of fact, you should be quite the opposite. I mean, we all have things we're interested in and I gotta tell you, I met one of my neighbors and he had cool frames and he looked like an interesting cat. Eye frames. Yeah. And I said to him, he said, found out we were neighbors. And I said, what are you in?
Starting point is 00:04:02 What line you in? I missed that by the way. I missed that part where the guys go, what line you in? What what line you in I missed that by the way I missed that part what line of work in guys go what line you in bub and It's it's all gone. I think the computer fucked that up, but it used to be you know aluminum siding or whatever He said outdoor advertising and I was like I'm gonna have to stretch a little bit here like, you know, you do billboards or bus stops or you know, and then I but I said, you know
Starting point is 00:04:30 Wow, cuz By the way, the world's your oyster, right? I mean you're doing the sides of buildings. You're doing buses these days Yeah, it's expanding paper and shit. I mean you're doing stuff Didn't the international markets gone crazy? But what I'm saying is is it used to just be billboardsboards where the movies were and the realtors were on the benches at the bus stops. Now you're doing the entire bus. Right. And then the size of buildings are becoming billboards. Yeah, right. So we had a little, even though I was thinking, now who cares? Who cares? I wish he, I race airplanes competitively.
Starting point is 00:05:05 But I still try to mine a little something out of there. And for those of you who don't, you're doing yourself a disservice because that's how you learn shit, but it also just makes for a better life. And Drew's a curious person, which is a good thing. And curious how the MCT oil is treating you. my stomach was growling well I just curious if you like it because I'm I dig that shit I want to talk about it I just we just dumped some in my coffee I'm one of these people can't tell the difference what I do when I do it I do it you're you're very sensitive little bit. Yeah, someone calling you a pussy. That's part of it, but
Starting point is 00:05:46 You I can ingest whatever not know what it was whether it was from the ground or from a cow or you know these people that are like You know you eat red meat and you fucking spike and then you bottom out, you know You have you have some chocolate you're riding that rush you're riding that rush But then you come crashing hard and like or you just fucking have some chocolate and get about your fucking day Yeah, I don't have any of that. Well MCT. I people keep asking. What's this stuff? I take it's called MCT L is medium chain triglycerides. I have no vested interest in anything. I was extreme skeptic But tried it I'll be god-damn if it didn't curb my appetite all day and sort of improve my mood a little bit,
Starting point is 00:06:28 energy or something. Yeah, I'm not surprised at what it did. I dropped like 14 pounds just, I mean I may exercise, I might run a little bit, and I'm managing my diet, but I find it easy to manage it with this stuff. It's interesting, it's really interesting. Yeah, I... And by the way, I think people with metabolic syndrome particularly respond to it because
Starting point is 00:06:48 I am that guy. I have metabolic syndrome. What's the syndrome? Which is high cholesterol, insulin resistance, high blood pressure. It's a familial thing. And you know, I love carbohydrates and it's hard for me to cut out carbohydrates. And this has somehow made that easy. I think you're just weak-minded. No, pussy, pussy. You got that part right. No, speaking of, I don't know, life. No, Drew, you've always said that you were a guy who some people were interested in themselves
Starting point is 00:07:21 and some people were interested in others and you were sort of interested in the stories and I'm paraphrasing but how how did that go because I really like that thought of yours that you've told me. Many years ago we talked about the kind of people there were. Yeah so I think it's funny. They broke down into people that are interested in their own ideas and people and I'm paraphrasing You're making it a cognitive process and I was and that's fine, but I was discussing and it's funny I think of it as a new thought but indeed I've probably had this stuff for quite a while As an emotional process. I think some people
Starting point is 00:07:58 Experience the self themselves their experiences their life, first through other people and then into themselves. Like their first concern is, how are you feeling? What's going on? And then how do I feel in response to that or what that immobilizes me? As opposed to somebody who's thinking about themselves all the time and then, oh yeah, you're out there too and I'm thinking about you and experiencing stuff, but it's in relation to me.
Starting point is 00:08:23 Does that make sense? It's kind of a tough concept people get sometimes. No, but you simplified it quite a bit over a decade ago when you said it to me. People experience other people's first or themselves first. Bottom line. This wasn't quite that. This is more about stories and interest. Meaning?
Starting point is 00:08:42 It's in the same zone. All right, but please fucking paraphrase fucking tell me what you told me over a decade ago please I know you can't remember it but what I'm saying is is you're you're overly complicated so you experience it's not experience it's some people are listeners and some people are talkers and it was like one of those things. Some people are focused on the other, others are focused on themselves. Bottom line. Yeah, but it wasn't... we're going off down a different road here.
Starting point is 00:09:15 Which is, this was simply a conversational thing. It wasn't about experiencing the other person or anything like that. It was simply a way to converse. That you were interested, some people were storytellers and some people were listeners and again I'm paraphrasing and I can't remember the one fucking smart thought you had in the last 15 years. But I think that's, you're saying it. I mean I think that's true. I think you're saying it. I don't know if I can say it differently than that. Yes, you're interested in other... It's not in others, it's in information.
Starting point is 00:09:50 I think, as I said, it's in the same zone, but yes, that's right. And even more, for me, it's even more important because I'm an auditory learner. I really learn through what people, from talking and listening and other people's stories and information that comes out of them verbally, I absorb that better than anything. Right. All right. So I like that, and I like that you're that way, and that's why you and I probably have something to talk about and always enjoy time.
Starting point is 00:10:20 Now you're, oh, it was something like some people like feelings and other people like ideas or something and that was you you like ideas Yeah, that's what I was trying. Yeah, it's the bits come back over the years. You're like Conflating a bunch of different things. I say they're all true. You're had it. There was a druism There's one that I was remember, reality on reality's terms. I always fucking love that one. And you had one other, which is some people like stories and some people like ideas or whatever. And you like ideas. Yes, I like ideas. Yes. In fact, I get a little bewildered by people that are so into story to my own detriment because I don't tell stories that well because I want to get to the ideas.
Starting point is 00:11:05 I think that's where we had this conversation because I was jumping to the ideas and you're like, hey, slow down, tell the story. I was like, no, no, who cares about the story? It's the idea that counts. And people zone out over ideas sometimes. They don't like hearing ideas as much as stories. Starting point is 00:12:15 With bet online bet online the game starts here Welcome back to the Adam and Dr. Drew Show Classics. Up next is episode 264 titled, Where Are They Now? Which aired on August 15th of 2015. Adam and Drew talk about people they've worked with in the past and where they might be now. Man, I wouldn't want to get on Adam's bad side. So take a listen. All I do is go through life going, let's not have this happen.
Starting point is 00:12:49 And then it doesn't take a day or a week. It takes 11 minutes for that to happen. Right? Yeah. We both got it screwed there. We both got screwed because Gary's wish was for Nick not to have the door slam. It's on a pneumatic closer. But you've got nine seconds that you can leave it hanging open while you set down the cup
Starting point is 00:13:10 of coffee. You have 30 seconds. Yeah. Right. It's true. But to be fair to Nick, I don't think Nick... I don't think he knew that. He didn't know that.
Starting point is 00:13:18 So you got what you didn't want. That was Nick stretching out Condor style, trying to hold the door and then set the coffee on the edge of the console. So in which case Drew banged this as he was reaching for the coffee. And then I got what I didn't want, which is asking Drew not to say thank you, knowing coffee was coming in after the show. But 0 for 2. Well, what are you going to do? That was an honor hearing that. I've heard about him doing that for a long time. I know.
Starting point is 00:13:49 Yeah, I miss it. You've never seen Inversion? No. It's like a band playing a really old B-side. Yeah. No, normally producer, junior producer Lauren, who I'm sure is doing doing if she's not doing nothing right now she must be doing next enough raising three kids okay but she zero career potential for her zero zero zero zero zero no potential for any kind of
Starting point is 00:14:18 gainful employment whatsoever as was everyone else so she studied under the best she learned a few things. She learned from the best. She learned nothing from the best. Either way, everyone over at that place was a total mess and no one is, is there anyone over there from my era that's doing a GD thing? Anderson's starting to do some films. At age 51? Has he finished any of them? them yeah and he's making some
Starting point is 00:14:46 awards for them too they've been every contest and nine-minute films yeah sure films so feature length what in his 90s and short films okay no just tell me nobody's yeah nobody's doing anything. Okay, they're bad. They weren't good at what they did and their attitude was worse than they were, quite frankly. I mean, I got ahold of them when everyone was in their 30s and 20s and sort of said to them,
Starting point is 00:15:16 hey, here's how you can do it. And they all went, hey, shut up. Old man, we know what we're doing. I wasn't old back then. I just told them, here's how it's going to go. Junior producer Lauren would bring the coffee in after the show started and then Drew would do the phantom thank you into the air while the show began, which was always delightful for me. At a certain point, because I'm an insane person and because Drew and Lauren would both show up a half hour before the show started, I would say perhaps you can get your mug of coffee before the show starts,
Starting point is 00:15:49 and then we can sit down and start the show, and you don't have to come in as the show is starting with the door slam and the phantom. Thank you. That lasted maybe two days, and then the third day we went back to the old way, which was her showing up during the course of the show and then when I Had the temerity to say something to her. That was a major issue Why you why you on my back
Starting point is 00:16:14 It's a whole new breed of whatever I Did I had the wardrobe? Person season one who's fired now she didn't last the season, but season one of Catch a Contract read a wardrobe person and she would lay out the wardrobe for me to wear that day, but it always had all the tags on it. And I don't mean her personal tags. It said like Monday, you know, you know, kitchen work day or interview day with the tags from the label.
Starting point is 00:16:46 It's the label, not the shirt labels. I mean, the stuff that was hanging off the stuff price. I knew sure. Yeah. And it was like you need lineman dykes or some scissors or something. I know. Pop. Also, there's part of me that was confused. Like, do you want me to wear this shirt? Like, yeah, that's your shirt for today.
Starting point is 00:17:02 I'm like, well, it's covered in tags. Oh She'd say I I can get those there go Well, yeah, you if you want me to wear the shirt and there's tags hanging off the sleeves and stuff You like I'm confused because I'm thinking maybe you don't want me to wear these shirts or you want me to try them on Or something so you can take a bag. But if this shirt I'm about to wear in scene, take the tags off." And she's like, uh, okay. And I'm like, first thinking, you do wardrobe.
Starting point is 00:17:34 You don't do like, you know, I tan leather, I base jump, and I do wardrobe. It's, you do wardrobe, sweetheart. Why are we having this discussion? But all right. And the following morning, I was, I was wardrobe. It's you do wardrobe, sweetheart. Why are we having this discussion? But all right. And the following morning I was I was tired. I've driven out to Azusa. I was in no mood. I walked into my trailer and there were all the shirts in my pants and whatever and they're
Starting point is 00:17:56 just hanging with the tags on them. So I just lifted them off the hanger and I just walked to the trailer about three feet off the ground. The trailer's a little bit risen up, was parked on the street and I just walked to the trailer about three feet off the ground. The trailer's a little bit risen up, it was parked on the street and I just opened the trailer door and I just threw them out onto the sidewalk and I shut the door and I just went back and sat down. And she came in and she was like, what's all what's on the sidewalk? And I said, the tags are all over the shirts and pants.
Starting point is 00:18:21 And she said, yeah, why did you throw it out? And I said, because I told you yesterday to remove the tags before you put them in because I don't want to have to go find you or pull the tags off or tear the thing or whatever. And she went, yeah, you just told me once. I told you once 21 hours ago. Yeah, just the one time now you're throwing it out on the sidewalk and I'm like Well, first off I should have bitch. I shouldn't have had to tell you once but I told you once and the once was yesterday You're gonna sit and look me in the eye and defend that
Starting point is 00:18:58 And you can go well, uh adam you're a douchebag. I don't know Maybe I am but my feeling is i'm fucking here to work. Are you here to work? If so, do your GD job. That's how I know Lauren's off to doing nothing. And I always knew she was off to doing nothing. But anyway, when she reverted back to the coffee being given out on air two days later, her attitude when I told her, hey, what's up, was, hey, what's up with you? Which is all the quality you need to go nowhere. That's the quality you need. But anyway, I can rest at night knowing that nobody in that entire place has gone on to do anything because, not because of the physical or mental or emotional, because of their attitude. Their attitude was always horrible and that will stymie you career-wise more than anything else. Everybody talks about how
Starting point is 00:20:03 smart everyone is or how important it is to be smart or good instincts or good education or whatever. You know what the truth is, as the boss of 16 or 17 people, I really don't know who's smart and who isn't smart. I do know who has a good attitude and who doesn't. And by the way, I don't know where anyone hails from. I have no idea what assistant math's education is. It seems limited, but I really have no, I don't know where, I really you press me I think you gotta play know your lackeys again college out here or something no you're like I don't I don't know maybe there's some CSUN involved definitely some you know it's a state
Starting point is 00:20:53 college but the point is this there I don't know what anyone's IQ is and I don't know what anyone's education level is, I only know their attitude. I know that Matt Fondalier has a great attitude. Yeah, I gotta show you, I tell you, I'm watching my kids now into the workplace, right? And I told you, Douglas has got a crazy engine going. And I remember back then when I would just do anything, anybody asked me to do it, you do, you know, I mean, I'll do that I sat next to you. Well, you did that shit. Yeah, but but For let me tell you how things happen he had a few extra hours so drive uber so he's
Starting point is 00:21:37 Driving over and then he's like well, he's uber I should be able to invent something that look I don't want to give his invention away, but he invented a little advertising thing for his Uber car. And they're going to sell advertising. And people saw just the prototype up and said, what's this? And everyone was like, oh, I'm onto this.
Starting point is 00:21:56 He was on the street, and someone waved him down. Hey, you an Uber car? Yeah, yeah. Well, I don't have my phone's not working. He's like, bus stick in the back. Let's just go. And puts him in, charges their phone for them so you can get the uber up turns out she's the head of like the
Starting point is 00:22:09 Advertising board or something for them for the for the nation. She goes. What's this advertising? I got this idea. She goes I'm gonna hook you up with a guy and the tech guy and what and you seem to have a good Attitude son. I'm gonna hook you up with a guy in San Francisco sounds like a young Lorna or young Anderson to me and she That's so funny so funny well look Email just emailed her he hooked up this guy at the guys there was like Adam. Why are you being a dick? I'm not being a dick their fucking attitude sucked They sucked early and they sucked off and and now they nowhere. So fine. What do you want from me? I'm just reporting.
Starting point is 00:22:46 I'm not doing anything. I didn't force her or him to have a horrible attitude. That's their decision. I'm explaining to you so you don't waste your lives like they wasted their lives. That's all. I just want the next generation to actually have a life. We'll be right back with more of the Adam and Dr. Drew Show classics. Last up today, we go to episode 312 that aired on February 25th, 2016.
Starting point is 00:23:18 Singer Brian McKnight joins the show and he talks about his career with the fellas and all the fun stuff he's been involved with. So take a listen. Starting point is 00:23:54 Adam I mean you know I mean no I don't know anyone doesn't know Brian McKnight but McKnight circle you do You in the McKnight world? That's how we call it, Uniters. We United over Brian McKnight. That's how we met. We met online. Here's a place. Night, night.
Starting point is 00:24:16 Strangely enough, it was a slogan. Well, they do a thing. They're car guys who do a cars and coffee thing every Sunday morning. We do a McKnight and donuts thing every Sunday. But it's more like noon we're not morning people but we get together we unite over what is wrong with your eye I've been sleeping on my face and I had a hectic morning no morning that's not the hectic that's like you got conjunctivitis or something. Oh, maybe I got it. Your eyelid is swollen as shit. Maybe I got it from a dog or something. Your dog has conjunctivitis?
Starting point is 00:24:46 Well, his eyes are always red. Well, no. You should go look in the mirror. You're like... I don't have... You know what? Gary, back me up on this. Just look at him.
Starting point is 00:24:55 I'm not controlled by vanity. A little bit. Maybe it's my clinical eye. No, it's not something that... Maybe my clinical eye just goes off when I see stuff that I know is pathological. No, I sleep on my arms. I got to take a closer look. All right, go ahead.
Starting point is 00:25:10 Sorry, Brian, good to see you. Good to see you. It's nice to see you're driving something nice. I always go over there. All right. Uh-huh. Last time I had a lung infection that... Thank you.
Starting point is 00:25:21 Uh-huh. All right, I'm fine. Brian, I was wondering because I used to see Brian over at Kalis X. action that uh... you know uh... i'm fine uh... brian i was what i was one of the k and over that kailash acts brian was driving a uh... lamborghini guy are now now here's the deal if you're really rich you pronounce it galardo because you don't care you're giving shit that's right yeah
Starting point is 00:25:41 but he had to say you roll you call it a galardo but uh... he had a uh... roll. He had to tell you roll. You call it a Gallardo. But he had a, I think he had a Gallardo. He's got a beautiful Audi out there, so things are working out nicely for Mr. McKnight. So where were we? We were introducing him and his new album and that are just getting back into things a little bit here, you and I.
Starting point is 00:26:00 I have a great memory of Brian McKnight, which is I stole a home run from him. Yes. I'll never get over that. Actually,, which is I stole a home run from him. Yes I'll never get over that actually. I'd already hit one in the game. Yes, this would have been my second one Was this a Dodger Stadium thing? It was in Detroit Detroit. It was uh, no, I think it was Chicago Yeah, it was the other Chicago wasn't regularly it was Commiskey. Ah, yes. Yeah, and Brian was heading right toward the MVP zone Ah, yes. Yeah, and Brian was heading right toward the MVP zone Because he was gonna hit a second home run of the day, but into the night into the Chicago night I drifted back and took it was over the fence too. Yeah. Yeah, Drew it what Drew's doing is tuning out now, but Try not to focus on me robbing Brian McKnight of a home run and try to focus on him just
Starting point is 00:26:46 about hitting a second home run. Wow. Yeah, I'm focused. Yeah, that's pretty good. Not too shabby, right? Did you play baseball in high school or anything? I played, I didn't really play baseball. He's got the baseball body, right?
Starting point is 00:26:58 He certainly could swing the bat. He was going for a second home run. I was actually at batting practice with Fred Lynn. Oh, wow. Getting batting instructions. Nice. And I just listened to my instructor and it worked out. Oh. He did a good job. Not quite good enough for the second one. That was taken away. But yeah, it was a funny... It was like when you did the diving thing where you rucked your shoulder out and stuff. No, that was my best catch ever and that was against... It was Tom Springs or something, right?
Starting point is 00:27:25 That was Tommy Chong's son. And the only reason, I don't know his first, I think his first name was Bong, Bongwater, Bongstein, Bongman, something, hashtag, hashtag, Bongman. No, you know the only reason I made that catch but McKnight's Was a lot more pedestrian that was just he hit it hard and hit it high and hit it deep and I just kind Of floated back and floated back and at some point I had to sort of feel around to where the fence was but the other Thing was is the fence because they set it up as a sort of temporary fence Yeah, you know two hundred and twenty feet or whatever. It was actually a place probably They said a fence but it had legs
Starting point is 00:28:06 Oh, yeah, and the legs came into the playing field And so if you were drifting around the fence you would trip over one of the legs like a C-Stand they call it Film so I was sort of trying to figure that out, but it was exciting for me. I do remember two things The catch if we want to talk motivation, the catch against the Chong, Jr. was only made possible by the right fielder who was a pro ballplayer or an ex pro ballplayer. And I was playing center field, and he just drilled this thing into the night and it was one of those. My mind immediately went into, maybe I can hold him to a triple mode. It wasn't in I'm going to catch this ball mode. It's the same thing you do with everything in life.
Starting point is 00:28:59 Like there's a part of life where you go, I'm going to avoid this accident. And then there's a part of life where you go, I'm going to avoid this accident. And then there's a part of life where you go, I'm going to brace myself and minimize the damage because this is definitely happening. And I said, Oh, this ball's definitely over my head. But maybe if I run my ass off, I can go run it down and hold them, hold them to a triple. And the guy who was in right field, who was a professional ball player, I can't remember his name, started screaming immediately, it's your ball, it's your ball, you got it, it's your ball. And all of a sudden, I just turned my back to home plate and I just started running, and he was screaming
