Hey everybody, John Stewart here. I am here to tell you about my new podcast, the weekly show.
It's going to be coming out every Thursday. So exciting. You'll be saying to yourself, TGID.
Thank God it's Thursday. We're going to be talking about all the things that hopefully obsess you in the same way that they obsess me.
The election. Economics. Earnings calls. What are
they talking about on these earnings calls? We're going to be talking about ingredient
to bread ratio on sandwiches. And I know that I listed that fourth, but in importance it's probably second.
I know you have a lot of options as far as podcasts go,
but how many of them come out on Thursday?
I mean, talk about innovative.
Listen to the weekly show with John Stewart,
wherever you get your podcast. You're listening to Comedy Central. My guest tonight is a comedian and actor who wrote in directed the new film first-time female director.
Please welcome Chelsea Peretti. The people love you. The people have spoken. Wow. You're very beloved.
Yeah.
Yeah.
The people love you.
The people have spoken.
Wow.
You're very beloved.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Does this chair vibrate?
Uh, yeah.
We're a question.
I think I saw an ad on Instagram for this.
Yeah, we tried to keep our guests happy.
Thank you.
So, Project's first-time female director.
Yes.
Film?
It's also, you're also a first-time female director.
This is going good.
Could I get the regular host?
Oh, right.
We said we wouldn't roast each other.
Yeah, yeah, I know, look at us going at each other now.
For some people director, you had a really Larry David Kirby enthusiasm by.
Right? Very handmade. Was that intentional? Was that a lack of budget?
I'm trying to spur him to come after me because I'm a big fan of Ronnings.
I just want to say that. I really am.
I am a huge fan of yours too. I'm I'm not. No we we never met but you are very nice to me over the pandemic. I
DM you over over Instagram and I was a huge fan of yours watching your comedy
specials and I love your music album that you released. Thank you.
Thank you. It was about coffee concept album. Yeah it was a coffee concept album, one of those. Yeah.
So, uh... You did during the pandemic. It was a pandemic. Yeah, it was a pandemic.
It was a pandemic. Yeah. It was a pandemic. Yeah. It was a pandemic. It was a pre-pandem.
And then when the COVID happened, I was like, I was like, why did I was a music. Thank you. thin. to the thin. A. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the th. th. the th. the th. the the th. the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the pandemic. the the the the the the the the the pandemic. the pandemic. the pandemic. the pandemic. the pandemic. the pandemic. the pandemic. the pandemic. the pandemic. the pandemic. the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the the the the the the the among many things is that I mean you but you're stand-up comic yeah so you're starting these comedy clubs
and all that right here in these city streets yeah on the streets yeah man
when you do comedy you're in especially when you're starting out you're
in a bar full of like drunk people yeah yeah if you're lucky sometimes
if you're lucky usually it's a bar full of junk men. Yeah.
And then you moved into directing a movie.
You know, how do you get that skill set?
It must be, you know.
All it really took was decades.
So if you have decades to spare, you too might be able to do that.
No, but I wrote for TV, I wrote for Parks and Rec and Amy produced this movie. Sorry, yeah.
Don't just say Amy like Madonna.
Oh, Amy Polar, yeah.
I know you're on first name basis with her but.
It would be weird if I always called her Amy Polar.
Yeah, Amy Polar brought you on this and is that is she the one who kind of like
championed you to do this?
She is, yeah. championed you to do this. Yeah. Right. So I mean what how did what how did this project come about because it's very meta I don't want to like misdescribe this
very meta kind of your first first time director directing a play in the
movie yeah in real life your first time female director directing the
movie so I mean I was well that's pretty accurate. Yeah that was a good description but what was the inspiration for this? The inspiration well I challenged myself to. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I was. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was........................................................................................................ the.. the. the. the. the. the. the. this? The inspiration. Well, I challenge myself to write a fake excerpt of a play
at UCB Theater in Los Angeles, which was a southern rural drama.
And it was a fun night.
It was very silly.
We did a really pretentious Q&A afterwards.
And then I was like, could I make this into a movie?
And so that's kind of the origin story, if you will. And that's how you start that's that's that's you that's that's that's that's you that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's how you start you start you start you start you start you that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's to into a movie? And so that's kind of the origin story, if you will. Right.
And that's how you start.
And people who don't know, making movies is very hard.
I mean, forget the making it, just trying to get it up and going.
I tried to get to get him for my movie, and I was told he's offer only.
That's when an actor thinks they're too good to audition. So I was like, whoa, whoa, this one hurts.
This one hurts.
Yeah, but I am awful only.
You are.
Yeah.
You are.
So why didn't you make an offer?
Why didn't you make an offer?
Why didn't you make an offer?
Well, I was waiting.
That's a good follow-up question.
the offer. It th, I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I that's, I that's, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, that, that, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, th, th. Well, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. Well, th. th. th. th. th. th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, that, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that. that. that. that. that. that. that, that, th awful only make the offer. It's too late. It's actually technically too late.
No, you can reshoot. You can do reshoots. Yeah. What I want to offer you is the lead. Yeah.
Yeah, well, yeah, I'll take the lead. Yeah. We'll redo it. This is good. Okay. But, uh, so it's uh, and you debuted it. And you debuted. I debuted it. And, uh, I'm. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. I'll. th. th. I'll. I'll. I'll. I'll the the the th. I'll th. I'll the the to. I'll to. I want I want I want I want I want I want I want I want I want I want I want I want I want I want I want. What I w. What I w. What I the the the the the the the the the the the. What. What. I want. I want. I'll. I'll. I'll. I'll. I'll. I'll. I'll. I'll. I'll. I'll. I'll. I'll. I'll. I'll. I'll. I'll. I'll. I'll. I'll. I'll. I'll. I'll to. I'll to. I'll to. I'll to. I'll to. I'll to. I'll to. I'll to. I'll to. I'll to. I'll the. I'll. I'll. I'll sorry I make a minor grammatical mistake in one of my three
languages I'm sorry where did you I'm a white feminist I don't really care
well I'm a minority America so I don't know I don't know I don't know who
wins here if we keep going at it I think white people white men
no white men wait if we keep fighting white men are gonna win so we got
we gotta get on board this yeah we got to get on board this let's get on board and promote and promote and promote and promote and promote and promote and promote and promote and promote and promote and promote and promote and promote and promote and promote and promote and promote and promote the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the board this. Let's get on board and promote the movie.
Yeah, what do I say?
So, yeah, when do you debut it?
Uh, Friday?
Friday, March 8th.
Yeah, but you got into the festival.
Oh, we got it to Tribeca.
Yeah, which is hot.
It's hard. It's hard to be a good movie. No, you can't.
Yeah, this is a hot crowd.
This crowd is hot and yeah.
Yeah, they're hot, they're a little old and they're a little bit, I appreciate it, but let's
call it, you know, and they've been waiting out in the New York rain so they're really appreciate them waiting out. No, that's a compliment, thanks for, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, they, they that, that, that, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, they. Yeah, they. Yeah, that, that, that, thatthat I really appreciate them waiting out no that's a compliment thanks for being so old and waiting out in your
yeah and they love you yeah you're sweet you're sweet with them again a
tender rapport yeah yeah yeah yeah so trade back it was great that's a huge I know
you're understalling it but it's hard to it's hard achievement. I got a fake tan for it. Yeah. Very classy.
Okay, and then now it's a premiering on?
A Roku March 8th, yeah.
So I'm excited and I hope people enjoy it.
Yeah, well, yeah, that's awesome.
What was the most challenging thing you had on this on this project?
God, not being able to get you in there. Passing me was the biggest challenge. Yeah. I love how you named it first-time female director. So like if anybody gives a bad review, is that like?
Like, they're just sexist, right?
Yeah, yeah.
It's automatically sexes.
Yeah.
That's what I'm always trying to set up.
It's some sort of infrastructure like that.
But it is weird like any title you think of the snooty reviews where they say like something like, you know, they always like use the title to slam
the movie.
Yeah, yeah.
First time female director.
Right, right.
I don't know, maybe it's harder.
Yeah.
Yeah, well, there's no reason to slam the movie.
It was great.
Well, there's no reason to slam.
the truth. Yeah, I am. I've always always been there. It's a weird time because it's like everyone being like, oh, I love the movie.
I'm like this.
Yeah, you see, this is the com- that's how I know you're a comic.
Yeah, because comics can't take compliments.
You cannot trust.
You can't tell me. and he was like, we're at dinner and he goes, I love this comedian, he's emotionless. And the weirdest thing is I go,
is it this guy?
And I pulled up a picture of you.
I'm like, do you mean rageful?
Because that was the joke, but I guess I didn't hit.
No, no.
I appreciate your dad knowing me as emotional.
And that's a great. Mr. Perretia, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, the they they they they they they they they, they, they, the weirdest the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the, the the the th, th, th, the th, th, th, th, th, the th, th, and I I I th, and I's th. And I's th. And thi, thi, thi, thi, thi.. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. th great. Mr. Perretia, thanks so much.
And yeah, well, Chelsea, thanks so much for being on the show, man.
I can't wait.
This thing is coming out, Roku Channel, March 8th, please, give you a watch.
Chelsea Perrette, everybody.
She's awesome.

Yeah, good, all right. Thanks, thanks for coming.
That one, that's good to see you.
Yeah, good to see you again.
It's great.
So what's this?
Comefu Panda?
They gave you one like that when you came out?
Yeah, they did.
It was even louder when I came out.
Right, right?
So, that movie too.
Oh yeah, right. Yes, you are in that movie. Yes, you are in that movie. Yeah, I've been doing that movie. Yeah, I've been doing a lot. No one's asking me any questions about that movie. Yeah, I've been doing a lot. No one's asking me any questions about that movie. Why don't you ask me some questions about? You. You. Yeah? No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Okay, yeah, okay, so he's really good.
Okay, I'm going to go out, you're introduced to as a guest, okay?
Just read that, and you can ask me some questions, all right?
You're going to go out?
Yeah, just read, okay, interview me about. Yeah. Okay. Okay. My guest tonight is a towering figure in comedy an icon for all Asians,
a colossal acting talent who deserves his own action franchise and my guest tonight is a
towarding figure in comedy and icon for all Asians, a colossal acting talent who deserves
his own action franchise and my personal hero who I'm honored to even breathe the same air with.
Please welcome, Ronnie Chang. Yeah, you hear that?
You're today.
Give me the audience.
Give me that?
Give me this question.
Give me this question.
Give me some.
Give me some.
Thank you.
Thank you, traders.
Okay, here we go.
I prepared some questions for you in case you...
Your voice acting is so realistic.
Did you go to Juilliard or something?
Oh, I'm glad you asked that.
You know, I just think that sometimes with voice acting, you want to, you know,
be as natural as you can, so, I'm kind of proud to say I didn't have any formal training in it. I just, you know, I just think authenticity is the key to good animal animation.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, 100% that.
I mean, this year we saw actors take on some incredibly challenging roles with Celian
Murphy or Killian Murphy as Oppenheimer, Bradley Cooper, as Leonard Bernstein and Rahn
and Ronnie Chang in Kung Fu Panda 4.
How do you...
Yeah, keep it going.
Yeah, keep it going.
Yeah, keep it going.
How did you prepare to take on such a big role?
Well, you know, I've been kind of eating fish my whole life, so I feel like I knew what
this character really tastes like and I kind of, you know, I channeled that into, I tried
to put a little bit of fishiness into... You live inside a bird.
Yes, in this... spoiler alert. I live in a bird. So you know it's the actually the
second marine characters that ever appear in a Kung Fu Panda franchise.
Really? Yeah.
Don't figure. It's hard to show under aquatic animals on land but while we figure it out.
This is the fourth project you've done with me.
How does it feel to always be below me on the call sheet?
Okay, you know what?
Okay, okay.
Okay, I didn't forget.
Is that what he says?
Is that what's it?
All right, anyway.
This is the fourth project, together. We have. Yeah, crazy rotations. We did Shang Chi. We did Kung Fu Panda. We did
Kung Fu Panda. Wait, what's the other one? That's three. Oh, we did. You are on my show?
Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, it's on Alkina. Yeah. Oh, it's on. Oh, yeah. Oh, I'm on. Oh, yeah. Oh, it's on. Oh, yeah. that's on. the. th. th. th. th. th. the th. the th. th. the the th. the the o. the o. the o'. the o'. the o'. the o'. the o'. the other. the o'. the o'. the o'. the o'. the other. the other. the other. the other. the other. the other. the other. the other. the other. the o'. the other. the other. the other. the other. the other. the other. the other. the other. the other. the other. the other. the other. the other. the other. the other. the other. the other. the other. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. th. Oh. Oh. th. th. Oh. Oh. th. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh on that, by the way. Thank you for coming. You're such a cool icon, you know, from New York City, born and raised, Queens.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
What's your connection to New York City?
Oh, what do you mean?
I mean, I was from here, you know, raised here, but sorry, why, chef asked the question, but I meant like, you know, you had
your family restaurant here, right?
Oh, yeah, right.
Yeah, my, my, yeah, my, we had a, the first Chinese restaurant in Flushing was called
Lum's.
Yes.
Whose restaurant was that?
It was my great grandpa.
My great-grand, Jimmy Lum came over in the 1940s and then it kind of went out of
business in the 80s. But yeah, yeah.
Reaganomics, yeah. And then what was the, you grew up in the restaurant? You grew up in a restaurant because then they had an offshoot after Lum's closed my grandma opened a new one. And so I grew up like in the restaurant, like I would eat, that would, yeah. Yeah, so very much in the, in the kitchen, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, in, in, in, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, grew up in the restaurant and stuff, like I would eat, that would, yeah. Yeah, so very much in the, in the kitchen.
In the kitchen.
I ate like a scoop of MSG one time, like just, like literally, it was crazy.
Oh, okay.
It was like a crazy.
It was nuts.
Yeah.
Okay. This, yeah, this, uh, this, uh, this, uh, this new, I got, I gotta spend at least some,
I gotta talk, talk you up, this movie a little bit, a Kung-Pan-O-Pan-Foak, because, you're,
uh, you play a, a Khorak, Khorak, Fox.
Okay, so, so, sorry, it's a thrown.
that. Is that a real, is, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, the, t-a.. to. to. to. to. t-a. to. to. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it. Yeah. Yeah. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It, you. It. It. It. It, you. It. It, you. It. It. It. It. It's, t. It's, t-a. It's, t-a. Yeah, t-a. Yeah, t-a. Yeah, t-a. Yeah, t-a. Yeah, t-a. Yeah, the. Yeah, the. It's, you. It's, you. It beautiful Asian Fox in Kamupana form. Yeah, yeah, she's a fan.
Yeah, there you go.
That's what you look like over there.
And I don't know if I spoil it, but it's a pretty important role in this, because not only
are you the second lead, you know, something happens in this movie that, you know,
it really will change the franchise forever, I think.
I don't know if you can't say say the you you can't, you can't, you can't, you can't, you can't, you can't, you can't, you can't, say, say, say, say, you can't, say, say, say, say, you, say, the franchise forever I think. Yeah, I don't know if you can't talk about that but you want you want you can't say what's going to
the spoiler? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, I think I think the movie just this one, I think I watched it a lot.
I was a fan of Jack Black who's you know like kind of reprising this role. Yeah, I mean like he's really the real deal and so I think it's now speaking. It's the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. that's that's that's that's that's the the that's that's that's. Yeah.......................................................................... the.. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. I. the. the. the. the. I. really the real deal and so I think it's now speaking to I think the
adults that that kind of watched it and you know they're moving on and
stuff like change and stuff like that. Yeah yeah that's great I okay so we
we kind of really lost steam in this one after the first yeah once we started
being too sincere we kind of lost yeah okay

Only these people will know.
You're gonna cut out.
Okay.

God it's Thursday. We're going to be talking about all the things that hopefully
obsess you in the same way that they obsess me. The election, economics, earnings
calls. What are they talking about on these earnings
calls? We're going to be talking about ingredient to bread ratio on
sandwiches. And I know that I listed that fourth, but in importance it's probably second.
I know you have a lot of options as far as podcasts go, but how many of them come out on Thursday?
I mean, talk about innovative.
