Starting point is 00:00:27 to details. Hey everybody, John Stewart here. I am here to tell you about my new podcast, the weekly show. It's going to be coming out every Thursday. So exciting. You'll be saying to yourself, out every Thursday. So exciting. You'll be saying to yourself, TGID, thank God it's Thursday. We're going to be talking about all the things that hopefully obsess you in the same way that they obsess me. The election.
Starting point is 00:00:57 Economics, earnings calls. What are they talking about on these earnings calls? We're going to be talking about ingredient to bread ratio on sandwiches. And I know that I listed that fourth, but in importance it's probably second. I know you have a lot of options as far as podcasts go, but how many of them come out on Thursday? I mean, talk about innovative. Listen to the weekly show with John Stewart, wherever you get your podcast. Please welcome.
Starting point is 00:01:35 Malcolm Jenkins. Welcome to the show. First things first, congratulations, two times Super Bowl champion. That is an amazing achievement to have as a human being. And you did it with two teams that were winning it for the first time. I was watching the game. Tom Brady was all most people could think about, you're on the defense, right? You're seeing Tom Brady. Is the myth as frightening as the man or you're just like, now we got this? No, you got to get over the facade, you know, if you want to beat Tom Brady. A lot of people fall for the trick. But you know I've had
Starting point is 00:02:17 the pleasure of playing against Tom a lot and you know our thing the whole year was we didn't care who we lined up against. We're going to do, you know, whatever we do. We're going to show up, have fun, talk some trash, and win games, you know, no matter who's on the field. And obviously we got a lot of respect for him. He's by far the greatest quarterback to ever play the Super Bowl and then you're watching the fans celebrate in the streets by burning Philadelphia down. Yeah. Do you ever want to be like, do you guys know we won?
Starting point is 00:02:54 Are you like, did you? No, so, I, and this is right after the game, I'm on the field, cameras, and they're like, you know, what do you want to say to Eagles fans? I'm just trying to get back to Philly because I know the city is literally on fire. And by the time we got to the lock room, the pictures are rolling in. Right, right, right. Right, right. But you know, it's been a long time coming in Philly. So it's, you know, let momentous year for your team, for yourself in particular because what's been
Starting point is 00:03:28 really interesting in following your story is not just what you've been doing on the field but what you've been doing off the field as well. The name Malcolm Jenkins has become associated with activism that has that has really been moving forward you've been making progress in the game. You protested during the national anthem by raising a fist and people were like, what is this different to taking a need? What were you protesting about? Well, my biggest thing was is the same topics as Colin Kappenig and what he started
Starting point is 00:03:57 about? We're talking about police brutality, talking about systematic oppression, like our criminal justice system, the unequal education, all of these things that plagued black and brown communities. The reason I chose to raise my fist is because I saw what happened with Collins' protest, it immediately got turned into a protest against the anthem because nobody really knew what that gesture meant. That's interesting.
Starting point is 00:04:22 But when you look at history and you know, you see Tommy Smith and John Carlos, everybody understands what that gesture meant. That's interesting. But when you look at history and you know you see Tommy Smith and John Carlos everybody understands what the fist means. Right. And what type of issues we're talking about and so to just keep things on subject and not allow my narrative to be you know, the the the the. That's why I chose that gesture over anything. And you and you went out and you did something, you know, which is interesting to see so many NFL players have come together and said, we're going to do beyond just talking. You said you were tired of hashtags, you were tired of just talking about it. So you said about creating the players coalition with your fellow NFL players.
Starting point is 00:04:57 And you've got a commitment, commitment, a commitment, the commitment to a commitment, million dollars to help grassroots movements in black and brown communities and underserved communities. That's an amazing achievement. How did you figure out where you wanted the money to go and what you needed to do on the ground? Well the biggest thing is we have been doing work you know long before this the protest started and even simultaneously and so once we got to this past year summer of 2017 we had an opportunity to sit down with league officials and show them what we've been doing. This th. th. th. th. th. th. th, and th, and th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th. th. thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th. th. th. th. th. th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi, thi, of 2017, we had an opportunity to sit down with league officials and show them what we've been doing. This was our plan and this is what we're trying to get accomplished. And invited them to come and see what it is that we've been making so much noise about.
Starting point is 00:05:35 We had Roger Gaddell come to Philly along with Eagel's owner, and went to bail hearings and just watched how our criminal justice system works. We talked to public defenders, went to Germantown in Philadelphia and sat with a group of grassroots organizers and you got to hear these stories, you know, face to face and got to show them, this is what we've been we've been talking about. And through those conversations and having other guys join and being organized, we were able to sit down at the table and really shock the league as far as our preparedness and commitment. And they've kind of, you know, come to the table as well with, we're committing dollars as well as a platform for us to really amplify our voices, not only with the money,
Starting point is 00:06:20 because the money is cool, but money has never changed anything. We really wanted their platform to be to to to educate to educate to educate to educate to educate to educate to educate to educate to educate to educate to educate to educate to educate to educate to educate to educate to educate to educate to educate to educate to educate to educate to educate to educate to educate to educate to educate to educate to educate to educate their their their their their their their their their their their...s.s.s.s.s.s.s.s.a.a.a.a.a.a.a. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their their their their their their their their their their their their their.a. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. Wea. their. their their the money because the money is cool but money has never changed anything. Right. We really wanted their platform to be able to educate our fan base. We really wanted their legislative help to be able to push on the people that actually have control over the changes that we want to see. And this really was a 360 approach because I like that you didn't just talk to people who were victims of criminal justice, a system that has oppressed them........ And th. And thed thed thed thed the thed their their their their their their their thoes. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. to to to to to to to to be to be their, their, to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be toe. their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, the. the. the. their, the. their, the. their, their, their, the. their, thi. their, just talk to people who were victims of criminal justice, a system that has oppressed them. You also spoke to police. You engaged with police and talk to them about how to get involved with the community on a grassroots level.
Starting point is 00:06:54 You were working with people who cannot afford to pay bail and haven't committed a crime but have been held up in the system for a long time. When you look at the progress that you've made still, to, to, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thin, thin, tho, thin, thin, tho, tho, tho, the, tho, thin, thin, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, I, I, to, I, I, I, I, I, I, and, I, I, I, I's, the, I's, I'm, I'm, the, thin, thin, too, too, too, I'm, too, too, too, too, toe, too, toe, too, they.a, the, the progress that you've made, there is still a long way to go. But what are some of the things you've looked at and gone, oh wow, I can't believe that we've done this much, this far in the journey. Well, the biggest thing, the most proud thing for me, the thing I'm most proud is kind of standing on the mantle by myself but you know we've been engaging with over 60 current and former NFL players that are all in some form of fashion
Starting point is 00:07:32 been engaged in these issues and we're able to not only talk about it on a national standpoint but from a local standpoint and so we're able to focus on you know district attorneys races all over the country. you got Boston, Dallas, San Diego, San to to to to, to, and to, and to, and to, and to, and to, and to, and to, and to, and thi, and the thi, and the thi, and thi, and the thi, and the the thi, and the the thi, and so thi, and so thi, their, and so, their, their, tho, tho, thi, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their their theymea, theymea, theymea, theymea, thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii. thiiiiiii. thea' theyfoooooea, their their thi Boston, Dallas, San Diego, San Antonio, all have races this year. And so when we talk about changing our bail system, cash bail system, where 500,000 people on any given night are in jail, not because they're too poor to get out, right? They can't buy their freedom, changing that. And you talk about mass incarceration, juvenile sentencing. We're still treating kids like adults right in a lot of states and so The fastest way to approach that is to to pay attention to these district attorney's races and now we have guys and all of these different markets who can speak to their fan base who can
Starting point is 00:08:17 Movilize their fan base and then talk about these things talk about the stories and the people that are the the th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th that that the that that that that that that that that. that. that. that. their that. their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their that. that. that. that. that. that. ta. tea. tea. ta. ta. ta. ta. tha. tha. tha. the fastest the fastest the fastest the fastest the stories and the people that impact. And a lot of times we see these as black and brown issues, which they are, but most of them affect everybody. They cost us tax dollars, one and every three people over the age 18 in this country has some kind of criminal record, whether we arrest record or wrecr. And that's black or white, but does not matter who thoo thii, and th th th th th th th th th th th th that that that that that that that that that that that, and that, and that, and that, and that, and that, and that, and that, that, and that, that, that, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th th th th th th th th th th thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thaauuuuuuuauauauauauauauauauauauaua. thauauauauauauauauauaua. thauauauauaua, tha, tha making us any safer, it's not improving anything. So I think holistically, as we continue to teach and tell these stories, hopefully we can activate our fan base and really get some movement. Wow. It's amazing work that you're doing, man. When you look at the Super Bowl, there's one thing that comes with it when you're a champion, and that is you are meant to get an invite to, and to, and to, and to, and the, the, to, the, the, to, the, the, the, the, the to, the to, to, the the to, the, the, to, to, to, to, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin', thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, hopefully, thi, thi, hopefully, thi, the, the, the, the, the, the, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they..e, the the, the the, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, tooi.e.ei. So, is toooi. So, is toge, is toge, toguui, hopefully, togui, hopefully, to get an invite to make the President of the United States at the White House. Now the Eagles have yet to receive the official invitation but you have said that you you would not go to the White House to meet the President. Right. So the reason I said and for me
Starting point is 00:09:22 I've won a Super Bowl before, so I kind of know what that is like. Humble Brack. Yeah. Yeah, you try to come up with it back. But it's a celebratory event. You go, we're in a big room, the president comes in, you shake his hand, we take a few pictures, they leave.
Starting point is 00:09:40 I'm not interested in a photo out, personally. But what I the the thua we thua thua we thua thuuu. thu. thu. thu. thi thi. to to to to thi. thi. thi. to to thi. thi. thi. thi. to thi. thi. thi, to be, thi. thi. th. th. th. to, to, to, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, toe. Yeah, toe. Yeah, toe. Yeah, toe. Yeah, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, hum, hum, hum, humble, humble, humble, humble, humble, humble, um, um, um, um, um, um. But what I've always been open to, and what we've been doing, we've taken multiple chips to the Hill to speak to people who want to help us with criminal justice reform and all of the different things that we've been fighting for, that I'm interested in. So if the president said, come to the White House, Malcolm Jenkins and then we can have a discussion on criminal justice reform, etc. Would you go? If it was serious in nature, then... Yeah, he would even have a piece of paper and he would say, Malcolm Jenkins, I hear you. Thank you so much for being on the show.
