All the roads we have to walk are winding.
Senaqa was privileged early,
born to a rich and successful family.
All was well until illness cut him down just as his promising career began.
It was a long way back ten years
of convalescence in Egypt, spoiled by a tragic shipwreck that killed his uncle. Then came
exile, then Nero, then exile again. The last years of his life were a mad sprint to produce
his best philosophical works. Marcus Aurelius lost his father young, only to find two new
fathers in Hadrian and Antoninus.
He was primed to take the throne, only then to sit and waiting for 23 years.
All of those years of peace and prosperity disappeared at moments after he became emperor.
Power brought him plagues and invasions, floods and uprisings.
He died, likely wondering if he had been a disappointment, not knowing that
2000 years later, his private philosophical writings would still be changing lives for
the better. We could go on for the lives of Musonius Rufus, Rutilius, or Portiacato, or
more of the same. And I do go into depth in them and lives of the Stoics, if you haven't
read it, debuted on the Times List, I think you'll like it.
But look, the point is the same, whatever Stoic you look at, all the roads we have to walk
are winding, even the lucky among us experience misfortune, even the greats have had to struggle
and endure.
So what makes you think you deserve an easy path?
What makes you think that that would even be desirable?
It's the winding road that teaches us, that makes us stronger, that helps us
become who we were meant to be. You might seem lost now, but bear with it.
You might feel triumphant now. Well, get ready.
There are twists and turns coming, but fear not. They are going to make you great,
or rather they can make you but if you're not, they are going to make you great or rather they can
make you great if you choose.
Exciting news.
I was just told by my publisher that my book The Obstacle is the Way, The Timeless Art
Turning Trials into Triumph is $199 everywhere you get your e-books.
I'm not sure how long the price drop will last, but now is the cheapest the book will probably ever be.
If you haven't read it, if you want to give it as a gift,
if you also want a digital copy, whatever,
it's pretty awesome.
$199, this is a book that sold now well over a million copies
in 40 languages.
It's been used by superbowling teams,
special forces operators, members of Congress,
world leaders, and it's less than two bucks.
So if you wanna get the obstacle is the way as an ebook,
I think it's only in the US, but check the link here
in the show notes or just go to Amazon,
or just go to Amazon or wherever you get your ebooks.
Also, or related news if you have more than $2,
we have a leather bound edition of the obstacle
as the way which you can check out in the Daily Stoke.
Store, just go to store.dailystoke.com.
It's a premium edition, should last a little bit longer
than the hard cover.

and you can also get me to sign your
leather-bound edition or any of your editions of the book. And of course, oh yes
some other cool obstacle is the way merch. Check it out. The obstacle is the way as

Hey there listeners, while we take a little break here, I want to tell you about another
podcast that I think you'll like.
It's called How I Built This, where host Guy Razz talks to founders behind some of the
world's biggest and most innovative companies, to learn how they built them from the ground
up.
Guy has sat down with hundreds of founders behind well-known companies like Headspace,
Manduke Yoga Mats, Soul Cycle, and Codopaxi, as well
as entrepreneurs working to solve some of the biggest problems of our time, like developing
technology that pulls energy from the ground to heat in cool homes, or even figuring out
how to make drinking water from air and sunlight.
Together, they discussed their entire journey from day one, and all the skills they had to
learn along the way, like confronting big challenges, and how to lead through uncertainty.
So if you want to get inspired, and learn how to think like an entrepreneur, check out how
I built this, wherever you get your podcasts.
You can listen early, and add free, on the Amazon, or Wonder yet.
Wondering how.
