Hi, I'm Akilah Hughes, and I'm so excited about my new podcast, Rebel Spirit, where I head back to my hometown in Kentucky and try to convince my high school to change their racist mascot, the Rebels, into something everyone in the South loves, the Biscuits. I was a lady rebel. Like, what does that even mean? It's right here in black and white in print. It's bigger than a flag or mascot. Starting point is 00:02:49 Dan, you feel the love tonight. All right. Oh, my God. Like a dandle in the wind. Oh, God. Thanks for having me. I'm happy to be here. Thanks for being here.
Starting point is 00:03:04 We're thrilled to have you. Do people know that you have Daily Psyche's fidget spinners? See, that's an in-studio exclusive. A lot of people see it on Twitter and on the gram, and they're asking how they can get their hands on them. These are like blessed objects. You like to hook it up with your guests. So I'm just going to, this is going to conveniently go with me in my purse right now. No, we'll get you a brand new one okay yeah oh this one's used yeah exactly that's like a used
Starting point is 00:03:30 fidget spinner giving you dead like those bar peanuts that have been touched by like 30 different people you don't well don't make her not want to touch them yeah no no i really i'm done i'm done i put it away they're sanitized every night okay dann. Dani, what's something from your search history that is revealing about who you are as a human being? Oh, God. Well, one, I normally delete my search history every day after I had an accident that happened at the eye doctor. That was not cool where I opened up my browser and there was – it was porn. But, yeah, that was – At the eye doctor?
Starting point is 00:04:06 Well, it was like whatever I was watching the night before you know what i mean so then i woke up and then my phone died right after and woke up and then they were i'm getting lasik you guys in a week so they were like we doing well i know finally um i'm actually right on the cusp where if my eyesight was any worse i couldn't get it oh so i gotta get now. So some people's eyesight is so fucked, the lasers can't even save you. Yeah. You would get like an implantable contact that goes right. Yeah. And that sounds horrible.
Starting point is 00:04:33 It's like a permanent contact. Your eyes start like bulging out. They had me like pull up for the LASIK doctor because they wanted to check it or whatever. And I pulled up porn. to check it or whatever and i pulled up porn so but uh my last one this is also extremely telling of me because y'all i'm i'm single now i don't know if you knew that about my personal life uh and i googled uh to see if the the men in the marvel netflix series were married and they all are married every single one my first one I looked up was Mike Coulter, as you do. He is taken. Which one's Mike Coulter?
Starting point is 00:05:07 Luke Cage. Oh, shit. Yeah. Oh, my gosh. He is married. You thought he was single? Well, you know, I didn't know he was married. I was even, like, looking him up.
Starting point is 00:05:15 Yeah, of course. As you would. Yeah. He's strong. And I thought, you know, he could be dating someone. But no, he actually married his, like, college sweetheart, I think. He was there with him when he was poor. Before the checks came in yeah yeah like kendrick that's cute john bernthal married three kids um who else said shades shades also married they're all married so
Starting point is 00:05:34 did you do this because in your mind those are the only acceptable partners to you they better either have superpowers or pretend to have you're like i'm not fucking with bumble or none of that shit i need to be a fucking marvel character i don't know why because you spend so much of your life with them like think about it i binge watch like how many hours of all of their series because i think if people don't know you you are very you are about the culture you like all yeah yes exactly culture and so i kind of went down a rabbit hole and now i just feel like my search history is stalkerish where i now know that everyone all of the men are married so you're moving on to mortals now yeah yeah i've got to go with regular dudes oh god
Starting point is 00:06:16 it's it's not good out there i know i was speaking as yeah you're looking right at me thank you for saying yeah i'm mortal i'm mortal it's rough out. That's not what I meant. I'm mortal. I'm mortal, though. It's rough out there. Yeah. Uh-huh. It's mortal. I'm mortal. Good.
Starting point is 00:06:29 Once you get your laser eyes, I mean, you're going to. I'm going to have perfect vision. Well, I mainly wanted to do it because I don't know what's going to happen if we have, like, a nuclear war and I don't want to, like, be grabbing for my contacts. That's actually a big reason that laser eye surgery has gone up. Wait, so you're getting it to correct your vision. It's not giving you laser eyes, right? Not doing the appropriate surgery.
Starting point is 00:06:49 You know, remember we were talking about- But I might slip him a 20 or something. Right. Maybe he can put a little extra in there. Oh, like, yeah, like, let me get that 40-40 vision. That laser eyes surgery. Wait, is it better if the numbers go up? How does it work?
Starting point is 00:07:01 I think so. No, because it's from 20 feet away, you can see stuff like it's 20 feet away. So, yeah, I guess it would be. It's like from 20 feet, 40 feet away, you can see stuff like 20 feet away. Oh, hell yeah. Yeah, that would be dope. I don't think anybody really. Yeah, it's almost like I have 40 vision.
Starting point is 00:07:18 It's called macular degeneration. Aw, Nana. But there is a big uptick in people getting laser eye surgery because, you know, all these like tech billionaires in Silicon Valley are like, the end is coming. And then I will be like the perfect specimen of survival. It's mainly that I watch The Walking Dead and I don't want like if zombie, if my glasses fall off, I'm done. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:43 I can't see. The person in the horror film just reaching out. Where is everything? Again, I said my eyesight is so bad. I'm on the cusp where I almost can't get it. So yeah, I cannot see without my contacts and glasses. What does that mean? Like a stigmatism or something?
Starting point is 00:07:56 I do have a stigmatism. But also my degrees is so negative that they're like, you better get it now. Gotcha. So yeah. Dani, what's something you think is overrated? This is funny because I just said this. I think that the way that we handle superhero films. I don't know about superhero films themselves,
Starting point is 00:08:15 but I think the culture around, like when people talk about their favorite film, like somebody was like, I said, you know, what is your favorite movie of all time? Someone was like, Civil War. And I just was like, of all time? Like the historical event? No, Captain America.
Starting point is 00:08:31 Captain America, Civil War. Captain America, Civil War. I legit thought that's what you meant for a second. In the history of film, sir. In the history of film. In cinema. So you think people are just giving them too much credit? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:46 But I love them and i enjoy them obviously i'm obsessed with them and look up the the men characters in them but i think like saying that that's your favorite i i don't know that to me is and also that it's considered like a classic cinema film i'm just these yeah you don't hold that up in the pantheon of great film. Yeah. What's something that's underrated? Here's a couple. I think a goofy movie from Disney is underrated. I think it has one of the best soundtracks. I think people forget about it. Go back and watch it.
Starting point is 00:09:15 It's amazing. In fact, they just had the anniversary at the El Capitan. They had a lot of their voice actors there. It's a great film. It's a great film. And it should be, I don't know, they should do a reboot. They have an extremely goofy movie on Netflix. Don't watch. It's not the same thing.
Starting point is 00:09:28 I don't even consider it canon. I don't consider it goofy movie canon. But a goofy movie. Great soundtrack. Also, Hercules. People forget. Hercules has an amazing soundtrack. Isn't that Phil Collins?
Starting point is 00:09:41 No, that's Tarzan. That's Tarzan. Sorry. That's Tarzan. Another thing I wanted to say that I think is underrated, it was overrated, and then it became – you know when there's like a backlash because it's so overrated that then it becomes underrated? M. Night Shyamalan films. Well, which ones, though? I think just collectively.
Starting point is 00:09:59 I think that a lot later ones with like The Happening and Village and I think the first like three quarters of those is still pretty. You're you're looking like I well, no, no, no. I course signs in the sixth sense and like all of fall off very clearly to me at one at a certain point. At least to me, that's when I was like, OK, I don't need to see another M. Night Shyamalan film again. What point is that after the village to me was I was like, okay, I don't need to see another M. Night Shyamalan film again. What point is that? After? The Village, to me, I was like, ugh. I remember seeing it in the theater and it was packed. And I still felt like the three-fourths of it was still really good.
Starting point is 00:10:36 You're right. It was the ending that put me off. Yeah, so it might be the ending and the twist. And he's taking risks. Okay, he's taking risks as a filmmaker. But I still felt like as much as people shit on those films, I'm like, but was it really just the ending you didn't like? Because I felt like the rest of it was pretty good. I guess that's true. You're right.
Starting point is 00:10:50 It's the ending. But then I tried watching Lady in the Water, and that wasn't as interesting to me. I really liked The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable and Signs. I even met someone who passed out in Signs because it was so intense for them, which is the weirdest story. I just watched it last night. Yeah. Can you guess what? So this is a, I used to go to this like cheese shop where the woman would talk so much.
Starting point is 00:11:09 And one time she's like, you know, she overheard me talking about M. Night Shyamalan. She's like, I passed out in signs because it was so intense. I know when she passed out, was it the birthday party scene? Where the alien comes in? Yeah. Yeah. Wow. So people really do.
Starting point is 00:11:21 Because it's iconic. Yeah. That birthday party scene where the alien just like walks out with the little kids are screaming. She straight up passed out and then stopped the movie. It's like footage from a different country. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:30 That shit is terrifying. Underrated. I wasn't even that into science, to be honest, I think. But I love Unbreakable. Yeah. Unbreakable is wild. I like Unbreakable more than most people. I like The Sixth Sense probably as much as most people.
Starting point is 00:11:45 Did you know he stole that twist from a Are You Afraid of the Dark episode? Which one? About being dead? Yeah. I feel like that's a pretty common. I don't know if they are the only ones. Yeah. It seems basic enough that it's like, and he was dead himself.
Starting point is 00:11:57 Right. Right. Thank you. That's like an old ghost, like a campfire holding a flashlight under your neck. Like, and he was dead too. I remember reading about it and being like, oh, wow, that is identical. You're like, as a devoted SNCC fan. Right.
Starting point is 00:12:10 Exactly. I must say. There's a lot of goosebumps. I don't know the details off the top of my head. But you know what? Maybe they took it from Twilight Zone, which was there before. Because a lot of people would be like, oh, that's from Goosebumps. I'm like, no, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:12:21 The camera that you take a picture and you can see it. Save, Choose, and Die? Yes. And they have a new one that's coming out, right horror film that came out what is it with the you take a picture oh i don't know i can't remember it's not shutter it's something like that well someone was like oh that's a goosebumps i'm like that's actually a twilight zone episode polaroid yeah is that the name of the film i think so about a haunted instant camera that sounds about right right. Right. Okay. Well. So let's take it back to the.
Starting point is 00:12:46 When you develop the picture. Ooh. Good premise. Good premise. You know that was a goose bump. Rod Serling. Right. All right.
Starting point is 00:12:54 Let's get into format, guys. We're trying to take a sample of the ideas that are out there changing the world. Trying to take the temperature of the global shared consciousness of the human species. Today we're at, I don't know, Miles, what are we at? I think it's still hot. It's still hot because we just, there's a lot going on. There's a lot going on. And the way we like to open up is by asking our guest if there is a myth out there that is believed by that global shared consciousness that you, based on your own experience, know to be not true.
Starting point is 00:13:26 Yeah. That people, especially people that consider themselves Disney heads, don't consider a goofy movie a classic Disney film. And it is. Yeah. I've definitely heard that argument. I have not seen the movie. What? I've not seen it either.
Starting point is 00:13:40 When were you born? 1984. I was 11 years old. But I was just saying this. In 1995, I was the kind of 11-year-old kid who was a pyromaniac and watching Pulp Fiction. Oh, okay. Again, not that I'm edgy, but like, because granted, I've seen most other Disney films, but I guess to me, it wasn't even marketed in a way.
Starting point is 00:13:56 Because I was so into Fight Club. Yeah, right. I was hanging out with Chuck Blahnik all the time. You're just watching Tarantino movies? I don't know why. I think maybe because i didn't identify with goofy like and it wasn't one of the it's not yearly max it's max his son he's maybe so they they fucked up in the messaging for that you know i get what you're saying a goofy
Starting point is 00:14:15 like collective family like yeah and i guess it just wasn't their like tentpole annual film kind of thing so i was like oh do i need is this so good but what came out in 94 right yeah yeah so it came out in 94 it what makes it good i mean aside from the soundtrack which is just i mean they have like pop music that was kind of so tevin campbell i know i saw that i mean shut up okay but that is a great soundtrack that i love running, too. So his songs on it as Powerline are great, but also the other songs as well, just like classic musical songs with Goofy and a lot of the cast singing together. The story itself, it's very 90s, and I love it. It reminds me of a grown-up Boy Meets World type of vibe with like Cory and Topanga-ish characters. Totally, yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:07 Roxanne is 100% Topanga. So what makes it though, like to you, is it the message or is it the fact that it's like a great marriage of music with the story? Or is it- I think music and the story, the message as well as like this father-son bonding moment, which sometimes it does actually get dark.
Starting point is 00:15:23 There are some pretty weighted uh moments in that film uh and then it's just fun it's fun and it has great writing and uh yeah i'm all my friends that love it are like obsessed with it where it hasn't left us i think it has a cult following now it really does yeah i mean i I've heard Kid Fury talk about it on The Read and he's like it's he's basically said similar things that it's like his favorite Disney movie and he's like a big Disney fan. If people went back and watch it now, they'd be like, oh, shit, like this. This is good. Yeah, right, right. Yeah. I'm going to have to check it out. And it's funny and comedic and and yeah, I just love Max playing like this kind of bratty. Also, the fact that Goofy had sex in order to like have a
Starting point is 00:16:05 child like that's kind of where's the moment well you know in in the stereotypical disney fashion there's only one parent because the other died a tragic death somehow uh that we don't know she's just not like a alcoholic or something bounced on no maybe she died in childbirth i know sometimes dogs don't always make it with their puppies. Well, actually, a lot of people died in that film. Like, when you watch it, like, there's a scene where they, like, hit a ladder and these two guys fall into the highway and they... This is from Goofy Movie? Yeah. What the fuck?
Starting point is 00:16:35 I need to make a list. I need to pitch somewhere where I, like, make a list of all the deaths in a Goofy Movie. Because it's like, they're singing songs and it's like, whoa! And the guy, like, you know, and then you see a car go by. And it's like little... But it's all, like, you know, still you know and then you see a car go by and it's like little but it's all like you know still magical happening and then you're like oh holy shit that guy just died at the end one of the security guys swings into the tv and like is electrocuted and falls down but it's like during you never see him again yeah it's like during the musical number you know so you should make a t-shirt with all their faces and be like
Starting point is 00:17:02 never forget all All right. We will have a goofy movie viewing party at some point. With live commentary. Hey, speaking of Disney, there is a ride that just opened at Disney World that is terrifying people. Hall of Presidents in Disney World in Florida has reopened with Donald Trump's head and body and whole robot being there delivering a speech pretty prominently featured, which I'm assuming is always the case with. I'm no Disney. Whoever the president is. Freak. But I'd imagine.
Starting point is 00:17:41 Yeah, that makes sense to have whoever the president is be front and center. Right. And he is front and center. Like it's like George Washington, Abe Lincoln. And like between them is Donald Trump. He's literally standing next to a seated Abe Lincoln. And now the reason this is getting a lot of attention is because it is a truly terrifying version of Donald Trump. Like Donald Trump is terrifying for many reasons, but this is just such a strange likeness. There are theories, actually,
Starting point is 00:18:15 when you look at the picture next to Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, it seems like it's actually a blend of both. Yeah, like they fuse their faces. Right, with the idea being that they basically started confidently making a Hillary Clinton robot during the election and then had to, like, last minute, like, do a screeching U-turn and turn it into a Donald Trump because it does have, like, sort of a— The eyes are very kind. His body isn't even as big.
Starting point is 00:18:48 So maybe. Right. Like, look at it. It looks like a smaller. Yeah. The hands are way too big, too. It looks like Hillary Clinton cosplaying as Donald Trump. Right.
Starting point is 00:18:56 That's what it looks like. Yeah. Or it's like, remember in Mrs. Doubtfire when the social worker comes and then he errantly the mask goes out the window and then the dump truck runs over it in the alley and it's flattened. Right. It's almost like as if there was a Hillary Clinton mask with the same fate. Right. That it was mushed over.
Starting point is 00:19:11 Right. And then you get Donald Trump. And they made his tie too, like too long. I fucking hate this man so much. But doesn't he, he wears it like that, right? Yes, of course. That's why they had to do it. I wonder if they put the tape on the back because he doesn't use a tie clip.
Starting point is 00:19:21 Remember that when they, like he was using scotch tape to hold the back of his tie to the front. Yeah, there's a great story about... Spy Magazine was this great humor prank magazine in New York in the late 80s, early 90s.
Starting point is 00:19:39 They did this experiment where they sent out a $50 check to all the richest people in New York and kept going down like to, okay, $25, all right, $12, okay, $6 to see who would cash it. And Donald Trump was the only millionaire to cash like a one penny check. Like that dude is so cheap. So like that's why he keeps taping his ties down because he – You think that's why?
Starting point is 00:20:07 I mean it's a tie bar. Like he also likes nice shit. So like why don't you just get a fucking tie bar like every goddamn adult? OK. You say that but – Why not eat at good restaurants instead of McDonald's? Or why have your hair look like that when there's so much – I mean it's 2017. We have advanced so much as a country with technology and hair technology
Starting point is 00:20:25 so there's no no it's still not no one has a good hair job no you oh oh we'll talk after this there you'd be surprised the men in this or not but the men in hollywood that have hair plugs and stuff tell me who tell me one right now that you think is surprising and i'll tell you that i already know as someone with male pattern baldness i'd be looking out for other people what up charlie from who plays daredevil you already knew yeah you were like that man should be iness, I'd be looking out for other people. Charlie from – who plays Daredevil. You already knew? Yeah. You were like, that man should be a bald man.
Starting point is 00:20:47 I could tell. I'd be looking. Okay. The famous one, Joel McHale, looks so different. Joel Mc – yeah. His before and afters are – Well, you can see it started to go away, especially like in parts of the community. Like you're like, oh, he's playing a dangerous game.
Starting point is 00:21:01 And then it like suddenly is like, oh, it glowed back up. It really does change your face, how your face looks. But anyways, this man is a billionaire. Millionaire? Billionaire. Well, we'll see. Who knows? We'll see when.
Starting point is 00:21:12 Supposedly. When it all comes out. If we get those tax returns. Probably after this tax bill, he's back to being a billionaire. But back to Trump's hair, yeah. He should just get like the Jeremy Piven plugs. You know what I mean? Work for him.
Starting point is 00:21:23 Maybe he's so scared of going under like the knife for that reason. Well, yeah. He's like, they'll kill me. They'll kill me. He has gone under the knife a couple of times. He did that scalp reduction thing that was in his wife's divorce papers where he then was extremely violent to her and pulled her hair out. Oh, yeah. That's right.
Starting point is 00:21:42 That was in Ivana's like like memoir right yeah where she recommended a surgeon for him to go to and then it was painful and when he came home they were screaming and he pulled some of her hair because he's such a baby like any pain and did other things yeah yeah that was what precipitated the sexual assault on his wife uh but it was because he was like ow it hurts see and he gets to be a robot in front of people at Disney World, despite being a total piece of shit. The thing that's kind of being overlooked here is that all of these fucking robots are terrifying. That's true.
Starting point is 00:22:15 Obama looks like a Dick Tracy villain. He, like, his head. Oh, God. It looks like LBJ doing blackface that too or like he's like on human growth hormone yeah he's got a barry bond skull i think like it's either the people who make the masks are just not really good at doing their job right or they also there they have a vendetta against all the presidents and they just like we're gonna look like the shittiest version possible right george w bush looks like michael myers at a job interview. It's just like dead-faced.
Starting point is 00:22:48 Oh, God. Yeah. So I don't know. He still looks like he's like trying to mouth strategery. Like he still looks like he's trying to mouth. They did get the mouth right. They made his mouth perk like just a little. Right.
Starting point is 00:23:03 Yeah. Like the dumb, not quite getting his mouth around the word face that he tends to make. And also his suit is very ill-fitting, too. Right. Yeah, it really is the job interview look. But it is strange that whatever method they're using to build these things, they should talk to Madame Tussauds because – Who I guess subtweeted them. Yeah, they're just out here talking
Starting point is 00:23:27 shit but i think the difference with theirs is theirs don't move theirs don't talk yeah so they're pure sculpture yeah yeah so they are going to look a little bit better right but i feel like even with anyway we can we can debate you know movie prosthetics and things like that i feel like even a like a film could make something better than that just with the mold. But hey. Why not do what you do in The Haunted Mansion and just have a blank face but like it's projected. You know the singing little
Starting point is 00:23:53 The Men? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Blanking on what they're called. The statues or whatever. But yeah, why don't do that? Just have a blank face of Donald Trump and then just project his mouth moving. It's cheaper yeah yeah that's terrifying just because i want to see what it looks like when it's turned off and it's just like a blank like a styrofoam yeah just face of the surface blank face blank face uh all right
Starting point is 00:24:17 we're gonna take a quick break we'll be right back Daphne Caruana Galizia was a Maltese investigative journalist who on October 16, 2017, was murdered. This summer, the nation watched as the Republican nominee for president was the target of two assassination attempts, separated by two months. These events were mirrored nearly 50 years ago when President Gerald Ford faced two attempts on his life in less than three weeks. President Gerald R. Ford came stunningly close to being the victim of an assassin today. And these are the only two times we know of that a woman has tried to assassinate a U.S. president.
Starting point is 00:26:45 One was the protege of infamous cult leader Charles Manson. I always felt like Lynette was kind of his right-hand woman. The other, a middle-aged housewife working undercover for the FBI in a violent revolutionary underground. Identified by police as Sarah Jean Moore. The story of one strange and violent summer. This is Rip Current. Available now with new episodes every Thursday.
Starting point is 00:27:10 Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I've been thinking about you. I want you back in my life. It's too late for that. I have a proposal for you. Come up here and document my project. All you need to do is record everything like you always do. One session, 24 hours.
Starting point is 00:27:34 BPM 110, 120. She's terrified. Should we wake her up? Absolutely not. What was that? You didn't figure it out? I think i need to hear you say it that was live audio of a woman's nightmare this machine is approved and everything you're allowed to be doing this we passed the review board a year ago we're not hurting people there's nothing dangerous about what you're doing they're just dreams dream sequence is a new horror thriller from blumhouse television iheart radio and realm listen to dream sequence on the iheart radio app apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts and we're back uh so we wanted to check in with Mengazi. Mengazi! Because there's fallout happening now, you know, in addition to more people being accused. I think a comedy director was recently accused, whose name I wasn't super familiar with.
Starting point is 00:28:38 But there's also now sort of the second wave where, you know, people are being criticized for how they are responding. And Matt Damon kind of was at the center of this over the past week. I guess, you know, he got dragged and I've heard people be like, oh, we're in such a toxic environment. Look like the guy was just trying to, you know, say something that is basically true that, you know, there is a difference between these two things. But the way he said it was, I totally understand where the criticism is coming from.
Starting point is 00:29:17 What's the quote that he's going to tell? Yeah. Let's look at the quote. So quote, we're in this watershed moment and it's great. But I think one thing that's not being talked about is there are a whole shitload of guys, the preponderance of men I've worked with who don't do this kind of thing and whose lives aren't going to be affected. The moment is fueled by a necessary rage, and it's not about those good guys who haven't done anything like those guys have had their say for a long time. And it's about the fact that there was this giant, surprisingly huge web of complicity spun around these guys, which, you know, combined in a way that made it possible for them to get away with shit. So what like the idea of bringing up the guys who didn't do stuff is just sort of a strange
Starting point is 00:30:17 look. Also, I feel like Matt Damon, how well do you know your friends? Like I've had this conversation with my exes before, and they're in comedy and they're comedians. And they're like, oh, yeah, so-and-so is a good dude. I'm like, really? He, well, how well do you know him? You know, because we, what I told him is we see women. We see a side of your friends that you will never see.
Starting point is 00:30:37 We see a side of them at 2 a.m. when they're drunk, when they're sending us dick pics or disgusting messages, when they're slapping us on the ass or groping us. Like, we see a side that they would never show to matt damon which is kind of like that whole like oh yeah treat someone like you with the rock i doubt that the rock is getting the same treatment as his female colleagues right by his friends so it's like how well do you actually know these guys that you think all these guys are good guys you're the guys that you're friends with because i can guarantee you some of them aren't right and they're that's why they're coming out so there's the other reason that uh he should maybe just take a step back and like it's just you know somebody who has spent his whole life being treated like everything he thinks on anything like matters and is the final word is is sort of where I feel like Matt Damon's coming from. But this is an instance where you are uniquely not qualified to speak to what you're trying to talk about.
Starting point is 00:31:35 It's like equivalent of white lives matter. Right. There's this whole other thing. Yeah. What about all the white people? He literally not all men. Yeah. He literally did that.
Starting point is 00:31:44 It's like a very – it's like, yo, you're missing the fucking point, my man. But also if a friend came to me and was like, my, my boss slapped me on the ass. I'm like, well, he didn't rape you though. Right. You know, like that's essentially what he said. Like, it's not as bad. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:58 We've heard that our entire lives, Matt Damon, that a slap on the ass isn't as bad. We've heard that our entire lives, which is why most women didn't come forward, which is why they try to justify it to themselves. Well, it wasn't as bad. And like, well, I really need this job and maybe I shouldn't speak up. And he's a lot more powerful than me. We've heard that our entire lives. Yeah, right, right, right.
Starting point is 00:32:14 It's so it's so not helpful. And it's like, oh, well, what can we do then? You can listen. You can listen. You can uplift other voices. You can you can reflect internally on how you can be better. You can you can reflect internally on how you can be better. But but needing to pat men on the back for not being pieces of shit and in doing so also kind of taking the platform away from women is is shitty. Well, even within it is like they're like when he talks about the people who don't do this kind of thing and whose lives aren't going to be affected. There's no reason to talk about them then. like if there's no like how are they relevant then you know that's what i don't even understand like even even his own point like betrays itself
Starting point is 00:32:51 i don't know it's right it's like the judge roy moore defense where he's like think about all the women that i didn't sexually assault that haven't accused me right um yeah and then so the you're referring to the part later i I think, where he says, you know, there's a difference between, you know, patting someone on the butt and rape or child molestation. Right. Which that is. You're right. Yeah. And then he says both of those behaviors need to be confronted and eradicated without question, but they shouldn't be conflated. Right. And then we can talk about rehabilitation and everything else. That's criminal behavior and it needs to be dealt with that way. The other stuff is just kind of shameful and gross.
Starting point is 00:33:34 Actually, the other stuff is also criminal. Exactly. If you grope a woman, that's actually illegal. That's assault. That's physical. So you physically touched her. Yeah. And especially you honk her breasts or whatever. That's physical assault. You physically touched her. Yeah. And especially – You honk her breasts or whatever.
Starting point is 00:33:45 That's physical assault. Right. He's just avoiding the basic idea that it's – to violate someone's space or person, no matter what – even if you said, man, well, there's levels to this shit. You have to first agree that, yo, you cannot – you have to begin to respect people's agency and their right to have control over their persons. And I think, yeah, this other shit of saying, well, you know, there's a difference between this or that. It's again, avoiding the larger context of saying like, there's no reason to ever touch someone unwontedly or violate anyone's space in general.
Starting point is 00:34:16 I imagine this is what he has to tell himself and what other men have to tell themselves about past behaviors that they've done. And also that they've witnessed their friends doing. I imagine that this is kind of like the self-talk that they do as far as like, well, it's not that bad that, you know, when I was in college, I, you know, felt up her ass or whatever. It's not that bad that I watched my friend do that. And I think that might be kind of what he's dealing and what other men are possibly dealing with.
Starting point is 00:34:40 Yeah, that's a really good point because the stuff he's talking about, like, you know, grabbing a butt and stuff, it's not the stuff he's talking about like you know grabbing a butt and stuff it's not clear who he's talking about other than like he has it in his mind some behavior like that where people are grabbing asses and grab ass yeah it's like so you're talking about yourself for people you've witnessed right before right like uh no one is in the mood to hear the not 100 percent thought out opinions of a powerful guy. I think it's a good time to listen. I don't know. It's also like he is unique in that he is not just a white male, but a white male who has been like rich and powerful for decades now and has not felt vulnerable at a single moment in his life for the past two decades. So he's just uniquely blinded.
Starting point is 00:35:29 And like, I think that that's just something that all politicians and, you know, famous men and celebrities and I think just white men in general need to kind of take into account. Another place we're seeing sort of fall out, or I don't know if we can call it a backlash to the Me Too movement, but now senators are coming out and asking Al Franken to rescind his resignation after asking him to resign, which I don't know. I still stand by my original assessment that if you can take a photograph with a stranger, physically violate them and then be like, I don't remember. I took a lot of pictures with a lot of people. Then you are probably a sexual predator and like more shit is going to come out.
Starting point is 00:36:20 And that seemed to be the way the story played out was that, you know, these two people came out and then the next day all of a sudden it was like 8, 10, and he resigned and the name stopped coming out. I don't know if that means that more people aren't out there. It might just be that they're like, at it from, whether it's a Senate vote math thing. Right. They're like, well, do we give up like, you know, do we make ourselves vulnerable in terms of like what seats we can hold? Or is it about the fact that it's just seems very ironic that we are holding senators to standards that we're not holding the president to? That's true which to me i think is it would be the real reason to talk about this is like look yes he should resign but why isn't the focus now on president trump who you know like we've said
Starting point is 00:37:15 this time and again has his own fucking track record and crazy uh resume of sexual assaults that were just like, whatever. Yeah. My main thing. So Emily Jane Goodman, part of her quote when she said, we think that he has been supportive of women and women's issues. You can find someone else to take that seat. That's the thing, though. You can find someone else that doesn't have or a woman you could put in his place.
Starting point is 00:37:42 Like you could find someone that doesn't have that sexual assault history and put them there. So I think that they're doing themselves a disservice by wanting to keep him on given his history. I think that there's a different – because she said I and many other people and specifically feminists feel that it's not too late, that he should not resign, and that the rush to sweep him out was ill-conceived. And then, yeah, she said we think that he has been supportive of women and women's issues. I think that you, that's a different conversation where you can say, I think him as a person can, can, you know, change, whatever, maybe not change, but I think him as a person can, can, I don't know, work, work to, I don't think he needs to have this space in office though. I think the, the work that he does on himself to try
Starting point is 00:38:27 and make himself a better person i think doesn't need to be in the office i think that that's a personal thing that he's gonna have to do and rectify with himself away from this i don't think that he needs to like oh yeah but he's working on himself and we should keep him in i don't think that that's the place i think we can replace, put somebody else that doesn't have his track record, preferably a woman, because we need more of them. You know, like, that's what I think that they could do. Yeah. Well, yeah, because he is going to be replaced by a woman who is a lieutenant governor of Minnesota. OK, yeah. Yeah. Who is who is actually, you know, pretty. That already makes more sense. They call her the Velvet Hammer. That already makes more sense. Yes. And that is also just a much better nickname than anything I've ever heard.
Starting point is 00:39:09 The Velvet Hammer. The fucking Velvet Hammer. Get the fuck out of here. Yeah. So, again, I think it's one of those things, right, where we also see in politics, like, these guys are also playing a different game because in the end it's all about power, too. Right. These guys are also playing a different game because in the end it's all about power, too. Right.
Starting point is 00:39:33 You know, years ago I had one of the more eye-opening conversations I've had on this subject with you, Dani, on the Cracked podcast. That was one of my favorite episodes we ever had. You just keep bringing me back for these. Well, yeah. That wasn't even planned. But you kind of spoke about how frequently, you know, you face harassment. And it was like shocking. Like you were talking about how you have to make the conscious decision on a warm day whether to roll down your window or not, like in a car. Because when you have a window down, dudes will just roll up on you and start like yelling creepy shit.
Starting point is 00:40:05 Yeah. Yeah. That started when I was a teenager. Um, and just walking my dog. Um, I have to not make eye contact. Yeah. A lot of women deal with that every single day. You don't understand that by the time that you've, you know, guys will be like, well,
Starting point is 00:40:18 why I was nice, you know, by the time in the afternoon that you've gotten to us, we've already dealt with like 10 of you at the gas station. Some guy trying to talk to me while I'm pumping my gas. Yeah, not to rehash that whole thing, but yeah, we deal with it constantly. And not only that, then in the workplace as well or comments that are made to us online, it's just – it's constant. It's something I actually am in therapy for, trying to deal with it because it just'm I didn't realize when they do those PSAs that you see when you're younger, like in elementary school and in high school about sexual harassment that I would like grow up to be someone dealing with that constantly. But we all do. All women do. So, yeah. Yeah, it's crazy. You had a quote about how, and I think it was from a meme or something, but how like men say, like, if I was a woman for a day, I would do this thing.
Starting point is 00:41:12 I forget what they say, like play with my boobs or something like that. And women say, if I could be a man for a day, I would go running with headphones on. Yeah, I'd walk alone. Yeah, I'd be able to like walk alone without feeling fear. Yeah. And not like putting my keys between my fingers when i'm leaving the grocery store like stuff like that yeah yeah um so i mean this got dark no i think it i think it's an underrated way like i i don't think men uh like matt damon and also just all men totally appreciate the, the place that women are in on a
Starting point is 00:41:48 just day to day basis and like how just completely horrifying, uh, it can be to just be a woman in the world. Or it's the same thing. Like when I think even white people understand the nuances of what it's like to not be white and the kinds of things that you have to consider when you are not a white person like do i get out of my car really quick when there's a cop pulled up next to me because i don't want to fucking scare anybody or like when you get pulled over and you like you're you're though even the way you consider taking your driver's license out yep is like something you have to like you sweat over or whatever and yeah i think it's true and that's why i don't think it's dark to bring this up. I think it's these are kinds of things that people who are not in that situation,
Starting point is 00:42:30 you have to begin to sort of begin to download that to understand like, oh, like, okay, these are the things I've never considered and but do make sense. And then you begin to sort of wrestle with your own privilege, whether that be because you're a man or you're white or whatever the situation is. But yeah, it's these are I think these are very eyeopening things because, uh, I think most people don't think about it and they probably think of harassment in the most egregious terms that they're like, Oh, well, you know, like it's, people are assaulting you or whatever.
Starting point is 00:42:58 It's like, no, things are so much more nuanced than that. Right. Um, especially when it's constant. Yeah. Especially when it's caught. I do know. Yeah. There was a joke. a joke i think uh i've seen it around i think uh hampton does it in his set but it's uh where something about how you know when a when a on a date like when a guy when the girl shows up the guy is just like oh i just want her to be hot and the girl is like i just don't want
Starting point is 00:43:20 him to kill me you know like that's terrifying and dark, but that's like true. You meet with a random man. You're just like, I hope that, you know, I got it. We have a whole list. My friends and I do this whole thing too.
Starting point is 00:43:31 Like I doubt guys have that where it's like, okay, I'm going to text you to let you know that I'm okay. If I go back with him, like, you know, this is where I am. This is his address.
Starting point is 00:43:38 Like that's insane. Just to like sleep with someone where it's dudes are like, yeah, I got fucked last night. You know, like it's, it's such a different world sometimes that we have to live in. It's terrifying.
Starting point is 00:43:50 That's that's smart that you do that. But yeah, I'm like, oh, that's clever. I've never thought about that. Yeah. Well, shit. All right. We're going to take a quick break and we'll be back with a bunch of quick hits on what's going on in the world. Daphne Caruana Galizia was a Maltese investigative journalist who on October 16th, 2017, was murdered.
Starting point is 00:44:19 There are crooks everywhere you look now. The situation is desperate. My name is Manuel Delia. I am one of the hosts of Crooks Everywhere, a podcast that unhurts the plot to murder a one-woman Wikileaks. Daphne exposed the culture of crime and corruption that were turning her beloved country into a mafia state. And she paid the ultimate price. into a mafia state. And she paid the ultimate price.

Starting point is 00:47:17 One session. 24 hours. BPM 110. 120. She's terrified Should we wake her up? Absolutely not What was that?
Starting point is 00:47:30 You didn't figure it out? I think I need to hear you say it That was live audio of a woman's nightmare This machine is approved and everything? You're allowed to be doing this? We passed the review board a year ago We're not hurting people There's nothing dangerous about what you're doing You're allowed to be doing this? We passed the review board a year ago. We're not hurting people.
Starting point is 00:47:47 There's nothing dangerous about what you're doing. They're just dreams. Dream Sequence is a new horror thriller from Blumhouse Television, iHeartRadio, and Realm. Listen to Dream Sequence on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. And we're back. So we wanted to just pick up on a few quick hits. The Cardinal Law, the Cardinal Law, the Cardinal of the Archdiocese in the Boston area when the spotlight reporting came out and who it turned out had been sheltering abusive priests. He has died. And the way the guy who's replacing him opened up his like statement announcing the death was like, yeah, so again, sorry about that whole thing.
Starting point is 00:48:44 announcing the death was like, yeah, so again, sorry about that whole thing. But he's dead. So they are still giving him like the, you know, however they – Really? The Cardinal's funeral? Yeah. With the Pope and everything. Yeah. So I don't know about that.
Starting point is 00:48:59 Maybe that's why they had to apologize because they're like, look, we're sorry, but we're going to give him that card in his funeral. Come on, cool Pope. I thought you were cool, cool Pope. He is cool. They get cooler each year. But he doesn't, yeah. The next one will probably start actually rocking the Pope because there are times when
Starting point is 00:49:14 he could have said some real shit and he was just kind of like, I'll be vague. I'm still the Pope. I'm not going to talk about human rights violations in Myanmar. Yeah, as they get younger. Wasn't there Young Pope? Wasn't that a thing? Isn't that a show the young pope the young pope yeah i want like a millennial pope who's like super woke and just was on twitter all day yeah on twitter oh my god no i wouldn't be able to like if we had a donald trump equivalent of the pope i wouldn't be able to
Starting point is 00:49:39 handle that he apparently came out against media bias and the right wing is like saying, oh, well, that's him saying that the left wing media is biased against Donald Trump. But I don't think so, because he seems to not not be a big Trump supporter. Moving on down to Puerto Rico. Oh, you're moving down there? Yeah, I'm moving on down to Puerto Rico. No, parts of the island are still without power. Months later. So Puerto Rico's Center for Investigative Journalism and the New York Times are both estimating that more than 1,050 people have died on the island from September through October.
Starting point is 00:50:24 And 50 people have died on the island from September through October. And when you compare that to, you know, years past, that's 500 more lives that were lost that they think can be attributed to, you know, just lack of power or sanitary conditions. Yeah. Yeah. It said one. Also, they got fucked in the tax bill, too. Right. The fucking. So these idiots who are writing the tax bill forgot to mention that
Starting point is 00:50:47 puerto rico is a territory uh and there was like a small provision that most people didn't realize was in there that will raise taxes on businesses operating on the island because it was considered a foreign territory in this tax bill and and there are people in puerto rico like hey hey hey this thing is not good for the island because people do business here right like and this is a territory why are we being treated like this and it was just kind of like oh whoops we thought you guys didn't have power i mean i don't know if it's on purpose just because they clearly don't give a fuck about puerto rico but i don't know it's just fuck it's it's it's just sad that even like this tax bill like to add insult to injury is like oh we're gonna treat we won't even treat Puerto Rico as a U.S. territory.
Starting point is 00:51:27 Well, our president doesn't. I mean, I don't think he remembers or has ever considered it. Yeah. Too many brown people for his mind to register. And he's like, look, I shot a few jump shots with the paper towels. I'm good. Yeah. Yeah. I think the insult to injury tax reform could be like the name of the entire tax reform because it's just taking a bad situation and making it worse for people who really don't need that to happen to them. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:51:55 Which means to the tax bill is becoming probably law. I mean, it will be law. And yeah. God bless everybody. See you in the street. Merry Christmas. Yeah. Yeah. Trump has continued the streets. Merry Christmas. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:52:05 Trump has continued to make the same claim. He's nothing if not consistent with his messaging on this one that, you know, it's going to be bad for me. But, you know, rich people can call me all they want, but I'm not going to change my mind. That's exactly the opposite of how it's happening. Maybe he means Michael Jackson bad. Right. It's actually good. Really good for me.
Starting point is 00:52:29 It's really cool. Really cool. Super cool. But yeah, it's going to be specifically it's almost almost as if it was designed to be good for him and other people who make a lot of money off of real estate. you know, people who make a lot of money off of real estate. So that is probably being sent up to the president's desk. It also benefits like the seven or eight very powerful families that pretty much finance the GOP. Right. Because a lot of the, like, you know, the Democrats out-raised them in the first quarter,
Starting point is 00:53:00 like really crazily. And that's what through small donations. Whereas like the gop fundraising scheme is like a lot of it relies on packs and things like that and it's not really about small figure donations like for presidential elections sure like a lot of people donate but if you're like a congressman or whatever you're really mostly relying on these packs and like just larger fundraisers so i mean it's clear who the boss is and i mean not that we didn't know but you know gop mask off uh fuck everybody that's
Starting point is 00:53:25 what i'm trying to do now that really is it's the gop mask off tax bill uh they have specifically said uh you know our donors won't even return our calls if we don't pass this thing right so like they've said that in public they were like oh wait is this thing on uh because yeah you're not you're not supposed to say that and even fucking freddie munster wannabe ass paul ryan was even saying like he didn't even he's like well nobody knows if the tax cuts will pay for themselves like right right so the the long-term concern is that you know they're adding to the deficit which is something republicans are always like up in arms about so eventually they're going to you know take away things like
Starting point is 00:54:06 social security and stuff like that to pay down the deficit and so it's just gonna fuck uh future generations perfect or just you know the people who are alive right well right that's why a couple years that's why people need to get their asses to the fucking polls this fucking this next nove. Yeah. And I mean, really, the only way it's going to happen is if there is a Democratic majority in the House and Senate, like to be able to like be like, wait a second. Right. Let's correct this. But, you know, people got to people got to, you know, spread the word because this can be fixed somewhat.
Starting point is 00:54:40 Roy Moore, speaking of a majority, Roy Moore still hasn't conceded. What? Still holding out hope that God is going to do the right thing and make the pedophile, racist, misogynist somehow manifest thousands and thousands of votes that don't exist for him. He's still trying to get money from people to be like, oh, we need an election integrity program. That's such a weird – because my family is Catholic. Just speaking from a Christian standpoint, so you believe that God is only doing the right thing if he's doing the right thing for you. Like, essentially.
Starting point is 00:55:26 Yeah. That's just, that's great. That's a cool way to think about God and how you make sense of your Savior. Yeah. Because when he's like, if God's plan, like, what if that was God's plan? Right. Dumbass. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:55:37 Well, he might know something we don't because he might be talking to God. You know, I don't know how the fuck. Yeah. It's hard to know what he means. So the battle rages on. But there aren't even the votes. Like, it came out to like, they have more votes know i don't know how the fuck yeah it's it's hard to know what he means so the battle rages on but there aren't even the votes like it came out to like they they have more votes that they haven't even counted and he's still like it's not enough to mathematically trigger a recount in any conceivable way so i mean there has to be histories where people haven't like formally conceded and it's like cool well we're gonna concede for you right i mean it doesn't
Starting point is 00:56:04 matter like this is not an official thing at all. No. Everyone's going to move forward as if he lost, except for him. He's going to still be like talking to his wife. He won in his heart. Yeah, exactly. And finally, UFOs are still a thing, apparently. We're still just not over the New York Times report from over the weekend.
Starting point is 00:56:25 Just dealing with that, man. Dealing with that. I walked in this morning. Miles was watching some crazy-ass video that Tom DeLonge from Blink-182 showed to Joe Rogan. Alien extraordinaire. It's wild. I can't explain. I do want to put out a public call to any of our listeners who have explanations for some of these videos, because like in the article from The New York Times, they quote a MIT scientist who's like, you know, the thing that people aren't understanding about science is sometimes things do go unexplained.
Starting point is 00:56:58 And it's like true. Right. But so what is that thing that is flying around in the air? Right. Like that doesn't, that's not a... So you know what that is? You know how that's powered? You know the technology there?
Starting point is 00:57:10 You know where it came from? And why do all, like explain these videos. Like I do want actual explanations. The one thing I've heard people offer up is that it's like something to do with light and light particles and the way cameras operate. So if you have like some coherent and compelling explanation for what's going on in some of these videos, I would love to hear from you. Yeah. Or if you're like a former pilot who's seen it himself. Yeah, that's that's another thing I have been hearing is anybody who, you know, is former Air Force is like, yo, just get a pilot two drinks and they will talk your ear off about all the times they have encountered things that just don't make sense up in the sky. Also, shout out to the dude on Twitter who showed me the Joe Rogan thing because that video of this spaceship flying off, if it's real, is crazy. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:58:00 But who knows? Again, but it still blows my mind like that we legitimately have seen a ufo and we're really not that should be dominating the news but anyway but that's how you know alex jones it's just like too big for our minds yeah but alex jones is saying it's a smoke screen for pizza gate and the vegas shooter so whatever i'm still going home and like forgetting about it and just like dealing with shit like with my family and stuff like i welcome i should just be like running around take me with you turning tables over yeah my mom found an old weed pipe in my childhood bedroom and called me to yell at me yesterday and i was like mom they're fucking aliens right now okay let's not relitigate the past exactly danny it's been a pleasure having

Yeah, exactly. You'll be like, hey, what's up? Yeah, I'll see them. You know what? I'll see them before they're coming because of my eyesight.
