Starting point is 00:01:57 The Black Effect Podcast Network is sponsored by Diet Coke. How do you feel about biscuits? Hi, I'm Akilah Hughes, and I'm so excited about my new podcast, Rebel Spirit, Diet Coke. it's right here in black and white and prints bigger than a flag or mascot listen to rebel spirit on the iheart radio app apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts hello the internet and welcome to this episode of and now welcome to the stage oprah trend free um it's bees one of my favorite early internet memes oprah telling people to look under their seats when they do she screams it's bees uh great work by the internet all those many years ago my name is jack that over there is miles that is my name that is your name and these are some things that are a trending on uh thursday
Starting point is 00:03:15 august 22nd yep yep night three night three baby and what a star studded spectacle um i only caught the red carpet beforehand uh so i saw the stars arrive and get asked what they're wearing um no it it was very it was people seem to be impressed i've not been watching it's just it's such a spectacle man like it it is wild like you know obviously the uh the energy is some was much better than if like people were like oh wow joe biden is gonna lose to donald trump and i think now that yo i don't even know i don't even know what that would look like oh it would maybe feel even weirder than this the thing is like right trying to force it probably right you know it's just look the same but just the energy the vibes would be so
Starting point is 00:04:05 shifted and yeah it would be yeah exactly uh but like it's just it truly is a spectacle to dazzle onlookers and like behold the cultural might of the democrats like i even like you know we called it oprah trend free even when they like i saw like like, Oprah was getting a speech, and I was like, even me, I was like, they got Oprah? Like, what the fuck? That's also what Trump said. They got fucking Oprah? He's like, well, she wrote me a nice letter. I think they released a letter that she had written
Starting point is 00:04:37 to him in the past or some shit. But, I mean, yeah, the non-stop appearances, like, you know, it's Oprah, Mindy Kaling, Kenan, Bill Bill Clinton, all of them like that. And John Legend doing an offensive rendition of Prince's Let's Go Crazy. I anyway, but all of that. Yeah. Like one of my AKs where I finish it and then you say, and what song was that supposed to
Starting point is 00:05:02 be? And I have to explain it to you. Oh, that was prince prince prince charles um but yeah like but i mean like when you see all of these huge sort of mainstream celebrities it really like reinforces the message that like what the democrats are putting out like this is the mainstream this is where the normies is at are you in or are you out um and yeah uh tim waltz gave a a rousing speech that had a lot of people by the way we call them walls we call them waltz we call them walls he says walls walls from the windows to the
Starting point is 00:05:40 wall until some until he until he fucking gets in my fucking grill and tells me to say it another way you want me to say your name right say it to my face dude it's vals actually but yeah he you know he accepted the nomination made everybody feel good inside he's like the one he's like that guy who you really forget like that there are real big problems with like what the democrats are running on you're like yeah ah but this guy dude like he reminds me of my friend's dad who i thought was cool yeah exactly um so very masterful choice there with him um and i didn't think he was gonna accept it i was i was surprised he accepted i thought i was like i got so i had a lot of fucking money riding on this man for me a little wasn't gonna my. My take's a little different.
Starting point is 00:06:25 I expected him to be a little more humble. You know, he's always talking about how humble he is, but then he just went right up there and accepted the nomination. Went up, yeah. We didn't even have to ask him three times. He just accepted it outright. Yeah, exactly. Ah, no, I really shouldn't.
Starting point is 00:06:41 Come on, Tim. Ah, no, no. There are plenty of other people that should get there or not all right all right yeah yeah okay i accept um we don't need to talk about uh ann coulter making fun of his son um oh yeah she's taking her post down uh but yeah because that aged well to make fun of a child for being excited you know the just like again every time they're finding some fucking person's child to be like whoa that their children don't talk to them anymore yeah right exactly like that kid cried because he was so happy about his dad i don't know about
Starting point is 00:07:19 you folks but the only crying i did was because my dad came home okay we want to talk about weird their kids still talk to them um yeah yeah i don't know anybody whose kids do since 2016 2020 uh but well again while all this is happening and it all feels good to have you know uh mindy kayling from the office and nancy pelosi and everybody come talk you know the the outside the united center there was there's still i believe till now there's a sit-in happening over the dnc and the harris walls campaigns refusal to have a palestinian speaker get on stage even for a fucking tiny slot they're letting like billionaires go up there and be like when i made my billion to the dollars like you know and but again they're not even allowing
Starting point is 00:08:13 a palestinian american to speak on that stage they allowed the family of uh of someone that was taken hostage to speak and they even acknowledged palestin But the DNC, Kamala Harris's campaign, not willing to have someone that was coming from the uncommitted movements, like, you know, list of speakers. They apparently did everything they could to try and appease the DNC and Harris. Like, here's a list of people you can go through. Pick anyone you want. Do you want to see a script of what they're going to say before to like why up and down anything here it is guess what we can even find a palestinian american that is willing to endorse kamala harris on fucking stage but just give us the moment to be human and appear in front of other human beings and this very when when all of the attention from the party is on this stage
Starting point is 00:09:04 what is going on? Because, you know, for all the talk about, like, I mentioned it about the democratic platform as it related to the Middle East. You know, they're saying things like, you know, we equal, we value both Israeli and Palestinian lives equally. Yeah, both sides in that. Yet, that is not actually being borne out in what we're seeing on stage. And it's just such an easy fucking thing to accommodate yet these people that are running her campaign i'm sure herself the party they would rather spend all of their capital on having like celebrities
Starting point is 00:09:37 to like blind people from like the dark reality of like one of like something where we really need to reckon with something we really need to grapple with because we the america already has a problem of quickly calling people you know categorizing people as human or not human and this is such a huge stain uh on american foreign policy right now to not even allow someone to speak up there is like really fucking painful uh and just sort of underscores the failure of like the democrats to even like pretend you know for all the talk of like how they're about acknowledging people's humanity and how they will protect the rights of people just completely like erasing the
Starting point is 00:10:16 tragedies that have befallen palestinians and in by extension palestinian americans and other people in america is just a big fuck you and uh yeah like this is just ignoring a huge part of your coalition of supporters that you need just completely taking them from granted uh Muslim women for Harris pulled their support for the Democratic nominee after they just got a flat no on whether they'd be able to have somebody speak at the convention like on the last day too. I mean, that's, they left them hanging and then, uh,
Starting point is 00:10:48 told him no last minute. Um, they said we cannot in good conscience continue Muslim women for Harris walls. And light of the new information from the uncommitted movement, the VP Harris's team declined their request to have a Palestinian American speaker. Take the stage of the DNC. Yeah. They offered a offered a consolation prize apparently like a private meeting but it's like
Starting point is 00:11:09 no no no like it's it's very much about being public it's very much about being seen yeah and not cash to the shadows like the again just the ongoing armament of the israeli government as they just unleash this violent campaign so uh yeah i mean this this always seemed like this always seemed like the one thing that they're just not going to be able to get right um and they are not surprising us on that one but i think it i think it really lays bare like this whole idea of when you hear politicians talk about like you know like we've got to get a handle on things like police violence or these other things that are affecting people like especially people of color they're just those things that is that affect people of color whether it's domestically or abroad just are not important they are not important they are like and i know
Starting point is 00:11:58 they're having some family members of of people that have been killed by like you know by the police to be there but again like both conventions but like these people are used as props to sort of create the veneer that these things are being taken seriously but like to not even have someone again someone who would even endorse on stage like the fact that even the like even though they were not even committed based on a lot of the things that people were asking for, like an like an arms embargo and really leaning on the government for like a meaningful permanent ceasefire. I just it's to give up something like that. Like, yeah, fuck it. up something like that like yeah it well you can have someone get say the magic words on stage that i feel like for their campaign they would love nothing more than someone to go up there and
Starting point is 00:12:48 say that so they could just continue to be like all right let's just have that yeah yeah how'd they that one up um i mean it's clear how they it up but it's just like it's just that you know there's there are all these like moments where you you understand the limits of like liberalism and being able to completely stop the machine of imperialism and the military-industrial complex. That's just a bridge too far. And if they did that, it would become something completely else.
Starting point is 00:13:15 Yeah. All right, let's take a quick break. We'll be right back. I'm Jess Casavetto, executive producer of the hit Netflix documentary series Dancing for the Devil, the 7M TikTok cult. And I'm Clea Gray, former member of 7M Films and Shekinah Church. And we're the host of the new podcast, Forgive Me For I Have Followed. Together, we'll be diving even deeper into the unbelievable stories behind 7M Films and LA-based Shekinah Church,
Starting point is 00:13:45 an alleged cult that has impacted members for over two decades. Jessica and I will delve into the hidden truths between high-control groups and interview dancers, church members, and others whose lives and careers have been impacted, just like mine. Through powerful, in-depth interviews with former members and new, chilling first-hand accounts, the series will illuminate untold and extremely necessary perspectives. Listen to Forgive Me For I Have Followed on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I've been thinking about you. I want you back in my life. It's too late for that.

Starting point is 00:14:45 Should we wake her up? Absolutely not. What was that? You didn't figure it out? I think I need to hear you say it. That was live audio of a woman's nightmare. This machine is approved and everything? You're allowed to be doing this?
Starting point is 00:15:00 We passed the review board a year ago. We're not hurting people. There's nothing dangerous about what you're doing. They're just dreams. Dream Sequence is a new horror thriller from Blumhouse Television, iHeartRadio, and Realm. Listen to Dream Sequence on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:15:22 It was December 2019 when the story blew up. In Green Bay, Wisconsin, former Packers star Kabir Bajabiamila caught up in a bizarre situation. KGB explaining what he believes led to the arrest of his friends at a children's Christmas play. A family man, former NFL player, devout Christian, now cut off from his family and connected to a strange arrest.
Starting point is 00:15:47 I am going to share my journey of how I went from Christianity to now a Hebrew Israelite. I got swept up in Kabir's journey, but this was only the beginning. In a story about faith and football, the search for meaning away from the gridiron and the consequences for everyone involved. You mix homesteading with guns and church and a little bit of the spice of conspiracy theories that we liked. Voila! You got straight away. I felt like I was living in North Korea, but worse, if that's possible. Listen to Spiraled on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Starting point is 00:17:22 Do you ever wonder where your favorite foods come from? Like what's the history behind bacon-wrapped hot dogs? Hi, I'm Eva Longoria. Hi, I'm Maite Gomez-Rejon. Our podcast, Hungry for History, is back. Season two. Season two. Are we recording? Are we good? Oh, we push record, right?
Starting point is 00:17:41 And this season, we're taking in a bigger bite out of the most delicious food and its history Saying that the most popular cocktail is the margarita Followed by the mojito from Cuba And the piña colada from Puerto Rico So all of these We have, we think, Latin culture There's a mention of blood sausage in Homer's Odyssey
Starting point is 00:18:00 That dates back to the 9th century B.C. B.C.? I didn't realize how old the hot dog was listen to hungry for history as part of the my cultura podcast network available on the iheart radio app apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts and we're back we're back um and so yesterday's episode we had a story that we didn't get to about this new megalopolis trailer that i thought was pretty effective it was being called like the most defensive movie trailer of all time right it is for francis for coppola's megalopolis which is getting extremely uh let's say divisive critical reactions um when it screened at con not to mention like the production
Starting point is 00:18:55 behind the scenes controversies with him like sexually harassing people right so um the trailer opens with a montage of shitty reviews of past Coppola movies, like the Godfather and Apocalypse Now. Um, so they have like a sloppy self-indulgent movie over the Godfather, a spectacular failure, uh, over Apocalypse Now. And I was like, all right, like that's, I think that's kind of interesting if they found these reviews of people who thought Apocalypse Now and The Godfather sucked. We definitely memory hold the messiness of people not being unanimous about a thing that
Starting point is 00:19:40 we recognize as good now that they might not have recognized as good at the time. I was like, this is interesting. This is interesting. Um, they have since taken that trailer down and apologize because those reviews were not real. They were dude,
Starting point is 00:19:56 they were fucking attributing and shit to like Pauline kale and like some of the Roger Ebert film critics. And they were just like making them up. Truly. Like people were like, these aren't, like these aren't, these aren't real. Like these aren't,
Starting point is 00:20:11 I don't even know how else to say it. Like no one ever said that. And also, I think a lot of people were like, people were fucking with the Godfather pretty quickly. Pretty heavy, right up front. Like it wasn't like,
Starting point is 00:20:23 I don't know about this. Apocalypse Now, sure, maybe like it took people like i don't know about this apocalypse now sure maybe like it took people a second but like from everything i've read and not just known about like the history of that film and winning awards like it that did not seem like a thing people like what the fuck is this mess yeah um i'm sure like every director is probably a little like michael jordan in the sense of like they're're like, and I took that personally. And it's like a misplaced comma that they read as like, you know, being about them or something in a review, even if it's, you know, like,
Starting point is 00:20:53 I will look for the negative comment. Of course. In like a sea of nice people saying nice things. So I get it. But when they're people this big, people tend to remember, even they themselves, like, I never actually said this. so they had to take it down lionsgate who's the distributor they had to fucking post the thing said quote lionsgate is immediately recalling our trailer
Starting point is 00:21:14 for megalopolis we offer our sincere apologies to the critics involved into francis ford coppola and american zoetrope for this inexcusable error in our vetting process we screwed up we are sorry wow we rarely get a you rarely get a full-throated we screwed up yeah guys we screwed up and it makes you think maybe in the making of this trailer someone may have used some ai some generative ai you think these are hallucinations of an ai where they were like that's at least a better excuse than being like nah fuck it just make up whatever you want it's also exactly how ai works really is like that you know you know what would be amazing is if we could find like really shitty reviews for the godfather like at the time let's throw that in to you know
Starting point is 00:22:06 the search engine and wow they found the thing we were looking for exactly what ai does they hallucinate the thing that they think you want them to find yeah um well look the movie is such a fucking spectacle that you know i'm not'm not gonna lie, I'm pretty curious. I need to know how bad it is. I'm very curious. I need to know how bad it is. Or good. It looks like a true mess.
Starting point is 00:22:32 I can't wait. Speaking of looking like a true mess, we got some more people going undercover at the DNC. Donnie Brasco on them. Yeah, exactly. Matt Walshh oh my god shittiest husband of the century yeah that went went undercover in a you had a wig with a red baseball cap on dude don't go red baseball cap that's gonna make some connections in the back of people's minds immediately people are probably clocking a red hat at the dnc they'd be like who's this mag of fuck yeah and then they're like wait it looks like matt walsh with a very flammable nylon cheap wig on maybe do you have it like pulled back in a
Starting point is 00:23:16 ponytail is that what's going on i think it's like he just bought a fuck it looks like a bag wig you buy for a costume but it was like so long he didn't know how to cut it so he just tucked half of it behind his ear it just again he does not you're not low matt walsh people saw you immediately one journalist spotted him fucking immediately it was like hey matt walsh is that you and he looked at the guy and he said no i'm not and then is that you no i'm not then the journalist followed up i know it's you matt walsh applied that man is dead i'm a new man now wow okay okay he was out there with a fucking like he was with the camera guy trying to do his dumb gotcha shit again because that's all they're fucking there to do because we're're on a white guys for Harris t-shirt. Yeah. They think that's so funny that there's like a group of white guys for Harris.
Starting point is 00:24:10 Like, no, that's not ironic. He's like, yeah, I'm playing conservative, you know? Right.
Starting point is 00:24:16 Yeah. This was him undercover actually just like being himself. Yeah. I mean, people pointed out the skinny jeans or they're like, is that his part of his costume but he actually loves skinny jeans so that was a dead giveaway to maddie it is kind of a mess of like he has the glasses the like willie nelson wig his actual mega beard yeah
Starting point is 00:24:38 herringbone jacket suit jacket with like a bunch of buttons on it you're doing a lot man you're doing a lot because just as equally you could be wearing no regalia and probably blend into like the fact it's like i need to wear it all i just have full regalia on and i will fit right in um but then also not just matt walsh fucking my pillow guy mike lind, was also there in disguise. But his disguise was even fucking better because he just shaved off his dumb fucking mustache. And that was it. And then a baseball hat and sunglasses on. Like he's like a Panama in a 1980s like PSA. Yeah, he was.
Starting point is 00:25:27 uh like psa yeah he was yeah dude this guy was spotted by a literal 12 year old yeah named noah who was like making content talking to people like uh at the convention and he pulled this little kid pulls up on mike lindell talking about hey man like how can we know how come you're rejecting the election results and mike lindell's ass just gets into a full on scream debate with a child, 12 year old child, with a child over this. And it's just wild because this kid is just like smarter than most people he talks to and just not having it. Yeah. That's in your state. You want to know more in your state? They just found 250, 257,000 votes.
Starting point is 00:26:04 This happened last week A judge ruled in Georgia He is in this kid's face This just came out You're behind you So your source is trust me bro No the source it's in your papers in Georgia So your source is trust me bro
Starting point is 00:26:18 Trust me bro He's bent over With hands on his knees Like you would if you were talking to a child and being like and how are you like a norman rockwell dressed as for halloween but he's screaming at him and he goes i know someone she's a democrat she got both she didn't even she didn't even running and the kid's like what's her last name he's like i can't tell you that he's like why that's that's
Starting point is 00:26:45 proof like you tell me the name so i can verify what you're saying yeah and he's oh no nice try you're like okay dude just get the fuck out of here that's how they get you who 12 year olds yeah that's how they get you every damn time with their little polo shirts on you're like okay dude just fucking go go fucking fade off uh but yeah i'm sure there'll be another one probably today uh apparently today is the day they will actually talk about climate change at the dnc so that's good a lot a lot of people are waiting we're like wait wait what about that other horrible existential i mean i get democracy yeah that's at stake too what about the earth what are we doing here for that so that'll be i think one of the big themes tonight along with uh comal harris like officially accepting
Starting point is 00:27:35 the nomination and doing that whole thing when we fight we win except for climate change climate uh asterisks climate change does not actually count when we fight that we actually just sort of we only swept up we only fight yeah we only fight who our top dollar donors tell us to fight that's right that's it a couple other things like rfk uh the one of the heads of project 2025 uh is on the tim pool show just glowing about the RFK Jr. potential endorsement and is throwing out not just Health and Human Services, but also heading up CDC and the FDA for potential cabinet positions for RFK Jr. Simultaneously? I think they're ready to just give him the whole goddamn thing. Fuck it, man. Wear seven hats like they're trying to sweet sweeten the pot um and just i think we
Starting point is 00:28:31 talked about this when we first covered rfk but uh he went to american samoa and like really gassed up like the anti-vax movement there at a time when it was growing and 89 uh 83 people died in a measles outbreak so like this is the type of shit that if you put someone like that in charge of policy like people die like children die oh and then he will go and be like i never i never said that yeah his response is, I was not there. I was in American Samoa because I wanted to find out about those cookies. The Girl Scout cookies. Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:29:16 That's not even the same. Yeah. So, yeah. It's all bad there. I was also reading reading which is interesting one of the big things when biden stepped down was that actually a pretty significant portion of rfk support went to kamala and then so what what he's left with now are people that would probably end up going to trump going to trump it seemed like there were people who were just not who didn't want a biden democrat ticket who why what. What was their problem? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:29:46 I don't get it. I don't know. I don't get it. I don't know. What is this whole thing about? I don't understand. Respect your mummies, everyone. All right. Those are some of the things that are trending on this Thursday afternoon.
Starting point is 00:30:00 We are back tomorrow with the whole last episode of the show. Until then, be kind to each other. Be kind to yourselves. Get the vaccine. Don't do nothing about white supremacy. And we will talk to you all tomorrow. Bye. Bye.
