Starting point is 00:01:43 where I head back to my hometown in Kentucky and try to convince my high school to change their racist mascot, the Rebels, into something everyone in the South loves, the Biscuits. I was a lady rebel. Like, what does that even mean? It's right here in black and white in print. It's bigger than a flag or mascot. Listen to Rebel Spirit on the iheart radio app apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts hello the internet and welcome to this episode of the ziting aka dream trender aka pet semi-trendy aka the trend zone aka maximum oversight uh these are all from Johnny Davis, Stephen King, Steve Trent King. Oh, there we go.
Starting point is 00:02:27 Okay. All right. So, you know. Out to Stephen King. Yes. I guess. I don't know. Didn't he just write a new book?
Starting point is 00:02:36 Probably. That did, like, oh, it's his commentary on our new, like, fractured world. Oh, really? Yeah. Damn. I have not kept up with all the words written by that man he's yeah prolif a lot of a lot of words bro a lot of words all right i am jack you are miles yeah yes and these are some of the things that are trending the taliban is trending because they
Starting point is 00:03:04 have now taken kabul they're now in control of afghanistan i feel like it's most of what's trending on the internet because at this point if you haven't seen an image of what the airport looks like in kabul you're uh i don't i don't know maybe you you're willfully trying not to see it because it is harrowing but yeah i mean it's willfully trying not to see it because it is harrowing but yeah i mean it's who'd have thought that uh this spectacularly failed military mission from 20 years ago would end in just more trauma and oh man it's just it's just really depressing to be honest to look at it and just to see the lack of options these people have and you can see it and how it's manifesting in their behavior and trying to flee or pull money out of banks or all these other things it's
Starting point is 00:03:50 i mean the the thing with the people clinging to the plane as it takes off is yeah that's just like something that's never going to leave the mind of anybody who watched it yeah i haven't watched much of the normal mainstream media today and like how vocal they are in terms of trying to tell the government that they absolutely need to go there to figure like, you can't just leave these people like that left to die and allow, you know, the sort of mobility that women even had in the absence of the Taliban ruling there and all that being reversed so quickly. i mean right now i just see a lot of headlines of like the finger pointing that's going on where biden or other pentagon people or you know are talking about you know well the afghan military should have well they've i think by the time they realized that we were pulling out in
Starting point is 00:04:40 2020 and like just how uh no one was listening to what they felt was like actually needed to be addressed the you know the clock began ticking on how committed this you know army was to this new government which was not much at all and then on the other side of it you have the taliban who've been waiting for this moment for like literal decades yeah it's a no-win situation that was kind of fated to end in a no-win situation when america decided to go in there um yeah and i don't i can't imagine you know and i think if it seems like a lot of people can't just look at that and go my god america is just such a disgraceful fucking country um and look at what is happening to these people people are immediately pivoting to like well joe biden really screwed this up or donald trump
Starting point is 00:05:32 really screwed this up like please if you don't don't put your head that fucking deep into the ground like that when it's so clear that like this aggressive foreign policy and style of occupying countries and bringing democracy quote unquote like works it doesn't um maybe it did in a handful of you know post-world war ii germany and japan to a certain extent but like since then it's not happening nah the 25th amendment is trending is that because of the kind of crumbling of afghanistan yeah a lot of conservative twitter is now saying 25th amendment get him out of there he is incapacitated he needs to be removed from office yeah maybe i don't know but it's definitely this time they're the ones screaming for 25th amendment and you know the all the revisionist history that's swirling through people's heads where somehow this started and ended with Joe Biden.
Starting point is 00:06:31 But yeah, that's all the energy around that Twitter trend at the moment. Man, just the same exact shit, but on the opposite side is happening right now yeah it's just and if you remember half of these people most most conservatives when obama was there were like we gotta get out of afghanistan right we gotta get out we gotta end with these forever wars but not the concept of a forever war just to end this specific one but let's not actually try and make something make it right or be who started critical of it um yeah well george bush um but yeah and this is it's just cyclical and it you know i think only now i'm seeing like the washington post is like trying to press like to be more like forceful and asking the white house to do something is there are there like
Starting point is 00:07:25 some high profile like flubs that they're pointing to when it's uh when they're trying to suggest that he's not mentally capable of running the country it's the same things like you know how he'll misspeak about stuff or you know but i think mostly it's just more being broad to like, how could he think this is right? See, this is why he's probably incapacitated mentally. Right. Bleep, bleep, bleep, bleep,
Starting point is 00:07:50 bleep. Got it. Citizen Kane is trending for some reason. Uh, I guess there's a criterion collection. Dude, fucking 4k dude. Citizen Kane 4k.
Starting point is 00:08:00 You ready for this? I'm certainly not. Cause I haven't even fucking seen the movie. Um, so I don't know people are mad because the i guess the the cover for the criterion collection is just like a big ass k on it i guess that's an offense i don't know if the the original they wanted the original poster like that was hidden but i don't know i don't know i have no idea interesting um yeah i mean the original poster is just like some old-timey shit like drawing of people that's interesting though that they just went with a k since it is like has a bunch of really iconic shots i mean you you firing up the, dude, showing your kids what cinema is.
Starting point is 00:08:45 Yeah, dude. You know, that's the only thing they're allowed to watch. Citizen Kane. And The Godfather 2. Godfather 2, Citizen Kane, and True Romance. Yes. Classics. But yeah, this is, they announced that it's coming out.
Starting point is 00:09:04 It's like part of a whole class of films. Like Mulholland Drive is going to come out once upon a time in China, Menace to Society. Ooh, Menace to Society. Drips and Drives, yep. Is Menace to Society getting a... Criterion's interesting, because it's like a very small selection
Starting point is 00:09:23 of film critics kind of determine what gets the criterion collection treatment one of them was uh michael bay's college professor and so like the rock and i think armageddon both have criterion collection dvds i didn't even fucking realize that shit yeah dude wow i need those but it's just interesting citizen kane you'd think would have had it already uh definitely before armageddon but right right right but yeah it's it's also interesting menace to society i feel like that wasn't like a that was more lauded by people who were teenagers when it came out than it was by like the film critic community yeah i think it was you know i think it was jarring for a mainstream culture at the time
Starting point is 00:10:14 it came out but you know the hughes brothers did their thing they did but yeah it's it i i think it's like one of those things now that if anyone knows anything about cinema, like you couldn't say that this wasn't like a seminal film. Yeah. Great performances. All right. Let's take a quick break. We'll be right back. When you think of Mexican culture, you think of avocado, mariachi, delicious cuisine, and of course, lucha libre. It doesn't get more Mexican than this. Lucha libre is known globally because it is much more than just a sport and much more than just entertainment. Lucha libre is a type of storytelling. It's a dance. It's tradition. It's culture. This is Lucha Libre Behind the Mask, a 12-episode podcast in both English and Spanish about the history and cultural richness of Lucha Libre.
Starting point is 00:11:09 And I'm your host, Santos Escobar, the emperor of Lucha Libre and a WWE superstar. Santos! Santos! Join me as we learn more about the history behind this spectacular sport from its inception in the United States to how it became a global symbol of Mexican culture. We'll learn more about some of the most iconic heroes in the ring. This is Lucha Libre Behind the Mask. Listen to Lucha Libre Behind the Mask as part of My Cultura Podcast Network on the iHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you stream podcasts. How do you feel about biscuits? Hi, I'm Akilah Hughes, and I'm so excited about my new podcast, Rebel Spirit, where I head back to my hometown in Kentucky and try to convince my high school
Starting point is 00:11:50 to change their racist mascot, the Rebels, into something everyone in the South loves, the biscuits. I was a lady rebel. Like, what does that even mean? The Boone County Rebels will stay the Boone County Rebels with the image of the biscuits. It's right here in black and white in print. A lion. An individual that came to the school saying that God sent him to talk to me about the mascot switch. As a leader, you choose hills that you want to die on.
Starting point is 00:12:17 Why would we want to be the losing team? I'd just take all the other stuff out of it. On the segregation academies, when civil rights said that we need to integrate public schools, these charter schools were exempt from that. Bigger than a flag or mascot. You have to be ready for serious backlash. Listen to Rebel Spirit on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. In a galaxy far, far away.
Starting point is 00:12:44 No, babe, that's taken. We're in our own world, remember? In a galaxy far, far away. No, babe, that's taken. We're in our own world, remember? Right, in our own world. We're two space cadets. And totally normal humans. Sure, totally normal humans. Embark on a journey across the stars,
Starting point is 00:13:02 discovering the wonders of the universe one episode at a time. We'll talk about life, love, laughter, and why you should never argue with your co-pilot. Especially when she's always right. Right. And if we hit turbulence, just blame it on Mercury retrograde. Or Emily's questionable space piloting skills.
Starting point is 00:13:16 Hey! Join us on In Our Own World for cosmic conversations, stellar laughs, and super corny dad jokes. Listen to In Our Own World as a part of the My Cultura podcast network available on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. And don't worry, we promise to avoid any black holes. Most of the time. I'm Dr. Laurie Santos, host of the Happiness Lab podcast.
Starting point is 00:13:44 As the U.S. elections approach, it can feel like we're angrier and more divided than ever. But in a new, hopeful season of my podcast, I'll share what the science really shows, that we're surprisingly more united than most people think. We all know something is wrong in our culture, in our politics, and that we need to do better and that we can do better. With the help of Stanford psychologist Jamil Zaki. It's really tragic. If cynicism were a pill, it'd be a poison. We'll see that our fellow humans, even those we disagree with, are more generous than we assume.
Starting point is 00:14:17 My assumption, my feeling, my hunch is that a lot of us are actually looking for a way to disagree and still be in relationships with each other. All that on the Happiness Lab. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen to podcasts. And we're back we were just reminiscing before we started recording about how we all remember where we were well on this day 44 years ago yep uh when elvis passed i knew where i was green planet in 77 is that what he so that was later than i thought um but shout out to that man i remember not being born yet but i mean i was alive as i said errantly i remember where i was uh when elvis presley passed away it was more that i remember when i was at the 20th anniversary in 1997 got it because my cat we went on a trip to uh somewhere and we had to put our cat like board it somewhere and my cat died
Starting point is 00:15:32 the first day or the second day they called which was the day elvis passed away and they're like yeah man i was or your cat is dead and then every channel was running some like elvis fucking salute i remember being so pissed as a kid. I was like, they need to be talking about Casey dying at this place. I thought they were not supposed to die. There was like a pet hotel and he died. What the fuck is this shit? So.
Starting point is 00:15:55 I had bad luck with that shit too. Whenever we would leave our pets somewhere. We had one who ended up in the hospital in the hospital after that it wasn't really through their fault it was the dog the dog had something wrong with him but um covering for these monsters huh still and that's why you got to check out st louis dog whatever what did he died on a toilet right that's the whole thing with him he died on a toilet right that's the whole thing with him yeah elvis died on the toilet he died of um you know so some people like revisionist historians claim it was because he got novocaine because he had just been to the dentist um others think it was the just handfuls of amphetamines and other uh prescription drugs he was taking like every day
Starting point is 00:16:47 constantly i think it was there he had an impacted bowel that might have gotten him and yeah man that's what happens you know when you're appropriating black music for that long yeah comes back around to you there you go and also when he has a shot yeah wasn't uh priscilla presley like uh yeah minor when they met yeah for sure anyway wow don't don't don't look too deep into the elvis presley story folks you might see quotes like this one producer brian just uh unearthed saying he said the only thing a black woman can do for me is buy my records and shine my shoes and write songs for me to steal right right he also was like you know he died of drug use and so people assume he like was cool uh in that respect but he only did like drugs he could get like sycophantic doctors to prescribe to him and he actually famously went to meet with richard nixon
Starting point is 00:17:46 wearing a cape and holding a golden gun and uh was just high out of his mind and offered to basically like narc on the beatles and other like rock musicians hell yeah because who did like illegal drugs so you know shout out to Elvis, I guess. Haiti is trending because there was an earthquake there over the weekend. 7.2, right? Yeah. Awful. A lot of, yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:15 I mean, the buildings were collapsing. As I've seen many people tweet, don't give your money to the Red Cross. Don't give your money to the Red Cross. Don't give your money to the red cross. They completely fucked it up, uh, the last time there. And absolutely do not. Uh,
Starting point is 00:18:32 there's, I think other organizations that you should be giving your money to. Um, but yeah. Yeah. We'll put, we'll put a link to something in the show notes for the, for the trending episode of where,
Starting point is 00:18:43 where the best place to donate is. And finally, Travis Barker from blink one, a two got on a plan for the first time since the crash he was in that, uh, killed some of his best friends, uh, back in 2008.
Starting point is 00:18:57 Yeah. Long time. How do you, how are you flying? Are you a nervous flyer? Me? Uh, not when I'm flying private.
Starting point is 00:19:03 No, you know, I get nervous when I'm on those regular people flights you know right but just because of their germs and oh absolutely absolutely their luggage looks like stinky you know it's hard to describe but when i'm firing up the learjet i'm taking off from van eyes from the private airstrip. I mean, there's just no better sensation than to pay for a full tank of jet fuel for only $30,000. It's exhilarating. I like flying. I was one of those kids who was always excited to get on an airplane. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:39 But although there are times when you get some wild ass turbulence out of nowhere okay actually i don't know what the fuck i'm saying i have a fucking wild thoughts when i get on a plane but they don't overwhelm me it's over for me you know what i do sometimes i look when i sit down and i see all the people come on and i start seeing an immemorial video of all the people on the flight i'm on who passed away because we crashed and died so i'm like oh man this is heartbreaking man all kinds of people on this flight and then i'm like what the fuck are you doing like it's truly like this bizarre thought i have and then i'm like man you need to get off this shit and then i remind myself that's you're more likely to die in any other way than in a plane crash um so yeah but i'm not nervous i just have really morbid thoughts at the beginning of
Starting point is 00:20:24 the flight and then I'm good. I think I would get real nervous if I was like on a private plane because those seem to be the ones that get people like a commercial flight hasn't crashed since like 2001, I think. Are we forgetting those 747 MAX jets? In America. Oh, like what? TWA Flight 800 flight 800 or whatever yeah i think it was the one it was after september 11th and it was over queens the i think that was the last one but maybe there was one since then i mean look yeah shit and you know all kind of look there's
Starting point is 00:20:59 a lot there's a lot of planes that have gone down. But yeah, I guess, when was the last time South, well, no, they had those Supermax jets. Anyway, look, you're all good. Just get on the plane and travel to where you need to safely. But yeah, Travis Barker, because DJ AM was on that flight too. Although he didn't die from the flight. But it's wild to think 13 years this guy has been you know performing and stuff like that you know i guess doing it john madden style on a bus
Starting point is 00:21:30 right um but i wonder if being with isn't isn't he with courtney kardashian if that's yeah if that's you know she's like look travis i don't fucking do anything except fly private so i don't know what the fuck you i don't know how you think this relationship's gonna last sir right he's doing it for love yeah or he just grew in this maybe she gave him a reason to trust himself so either way uh good to see people you know oh yeah they were on a private date yep it shows him getting on kylie jenner's private jet in cabo and kylie jenner is flying that right yeah yeah yeah yeah well that's good i mean if you saw her story she was like she's like this is such a vibe and she's like at the cockpit controls um but i guess i got there safely all right shout out to that
Starting point is 00:22:19 young man that's gonna do it for us for today. We're back tomorrow with a whole last episode of the show. Until then, be kind to each other. Be kind to yourselves. Wear a mask. Get the vaccine. And get tickets to the live show. Get tickets to the live show. Don't do nothing about white supremacy.
