Hello, the internet, and welcome to season 41, episode 2 of The Daily Zeitgeist for July 24th, 2018.
Starting point is 00:02:10 Happy Tequila Day, everybody. It's so hot in LA, they've asked us to keep our lights off. My name is Jack O'Brien, aka O'Brien in that little boy smile. Oh, Brian with that slow southern style. A daily zeitgeist that'll bring you to your knees. Jack Velvet, if you please. Oh, my God. Courtesy of Angelique Colby on Twitter. First AK.
Starting point is 00:02:45 I am thrilled to be joined, as always, by my co-host, Mr. Miles Gray. Back in Miles Gray, when I was young, I'm not that gang anymore. But some grays I sit and wish I was that gang again. I am always that gang. Come on, man. But also, you know, back in the day. Come on. Love that song.
Starting point is 00:03:01 Shout out to Ryan Keaton at Space Wooly for that one. All right. And we are thrilled to be joined in our third seat by a hilarious comedian, writer, improviser, co-host of Dumb People Town with the Sklar Brothers, and host of Hindsight with Daniel Van Kirk, which is an appropriate name for that show because he is Mr. Daniel Van Kirk. Hello. Hi. I love it.
Starting point is 00:03:23 I'll take it. Hey, man. It's great to have you here. It's great to be here. Thank you so much for having me. It's I love it. I'll take it. Hey, man. It's great to have you here. It's great to be here. Thank you so much for having me. It's been too long. So we're going to get to know you a little bit better, but first we'd like to tell our listeners what they're in store for.
Starting point is 00:03:34 We are going to check in with a dude who showed up at Planet Fitness and took their slogan that it is a judgment-free zone to mean that he could work out nude. We are going to check in with The Equalizer 2, which was the movie that was number one at the box office, and just reflect back on the Sony hack and what they had to say about that movie as they were deciding whether or not to greenlight it. We're going to talk about a couple shootings, one that happened in Toronto and another that happened at a Trader Joe's right here in Los Angeles. We're going to talk about some different culture wars things, some how conservatives are reacting to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Sorry, just a cold.
Starting point is 00:04:19 Got a shiver. Yeah. And we're just going to do a Google Trends skim, check in with the teen mom and see what her parenting tips are for you when you're driving with your son and you get cut off in traffic. We're going to talk about the goldfish being recalled. We're going to talk about R. Kelly's I Admit and check in with Fortnite as it continues to take over the globe. But first off, Daniel, we like to ask our guests, what is something from your search history that is revealing about who you are?
Starting point is 00:04:48 You know, it's funny. I was reading a script, so I had to like... You ever... Okay, humble brag. No. Kids show business. We could, any of us could read a script. Well, I can't read.
Starting point is 00:04:58 Oh, the reading part is what I... Yeah, that's what I read. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I get you there. All right, big time reading. Haven't you seen my signature? It's a square with a star next to it. So I was just looking up some, like, you know, you'll read something and be like, oh, I need to know what that means so that either I can learn or be able to pronounce it correctly.
Starting point is 00:05:15 So some of my research history is not that interesting. But piggybacking on something you referenced, I recently searched last night, Los Angeles Mexican restaurant happy hour because I wanted to celebrate National Tequila Day Eve. Yeah. Wait, that's a thing? Today is National Tequila Day. Oh, I had no idea. Yeah, man.
Starting point is 00:05:37 Salt that rim. Actually, I go no salted. I shouldn't even have said that. You go unsalted? I do not want a salted rim on my margarita. Oh, wow. I think also today is International Self-Care Day also. have said that you go unsalted i know i do not want a salted rim on my margarita oh wow i think also today is international self-care day also so i guess that's a two depending on how you get down yeah you're blending them uh so yeah i was looking for a mexican restaurant uh a place called soul
Starting point is 00:05:57 s-o-l over by that that area of la i think it's playa del Rey Vista. I don't know, but it's like where YouTube is. There's like a complex. It's over there. It's a great spot. Great happy hour. Oh wait, is it in that mega complex thing? Sort of,
Starting point is 00:06:12 yeah, but it's right, this restaurant's right on the street. Okay. So it's a nice big open patio and a really good happy hour and a very good margarita. And you drove all the way across town?
Starting point is 00:06:23 I was already over on that side of town. Oh, gotcha, gotcha. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. I just built that town in like a weekend. All of a sudden there was just like a trendy town. No, for real. Right in the middle of like,
Starting point is 00:06:34 right on the way to the airport. I was just like, what the fuck? I used to work on this show for YouTube that was right by there. And I remember at that time in 2014, they were just framing it like with all the steel beams. And I'm like, I'll see you in 17 years. And someone just took a picture the other day around there.
Starting point is 00:06:51 And I'm like, where are you? And they're like, right there on Jefferson. And I'm like, damn. A thousand jet tubs and some fake brick paneling two years later. And you have a yuppie millennial prison. Just a whole city moved in there. I know. What is something you think is overrated, Daniel?
Starting point is 00:07:06 I think my overrated and underrated are actually tied together. My overrated is restaurant macaroni and cheese. Wow. It never – I don't like a baked mac and cheese. Really? It's always baked, and if you're not getting it right – and that's one of those things they can pre-make, start a day, prep. Put a dish in.
Starting point is 00:07:26 So sometimes it just tends to be a little overcooked and pasty, whether that's just because of the amount they're making or the end of time. A little flavorless. Almost very rarely in my life. That's why they add so much stuff to it. Because they're like, well, we've got to soup this up. There's a bacon crumble and five different types of peppers. I mean, whenever I go to southern restaurants or soul food restaurants, that mac and cheese is good.
Starting point is 00:07:47 That can be good. But yeah, when you go to a place... But some people are like, oh, the mac and cheese is so good. No, it's just not that great. Congratulations. You put one piece of a diced jalapeno in and you're like, isn't it cool? Diced jalapeno mac and cheese. Have you thought about this too, guys? You mentioned this, Jack. When it's mac and
Starting point is 00:08:03 cheese and then they're like, oh, and then we put bacon and onions and there's peas in there. And you're like, so it's a casserole. Right. It is not macaroni and cheese. That's a casserole. It's like with, you know, how many times people start doing this? Look, when it says grilled cheese, very rarely are they actually selling you a grilled cheese.
Starting point is 00:08:19 It's usually got like avocado and tomato or whatever. Right. So, no, it's a sandwich. Right. It's not a- With melted cheese in it. Right. Yeah. It's not a- With melted cheese in it. Right. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:26 You might as well start calling a burger grilled cheese then. I'm trying to think of one that- It's a grilled cheese. We've just added meat. What's the line we cross into casserole town? Well, if you're baking it, it's a casserole, which most, quote unquote, macaroni and cheese in a restaurant is baked. Right.
Starting point is 00:08:39 And then when you add a lot of extra ingredient, you want to throw one thing on there and be like, okay, that's a little flair. Yeah, I guess anything is a casserole that is baked in a casserole dish, right? Sure. I'm looking at the legal definition. That's why I'm just trying to figure out where, if we're trying to redefine the casserole or see where people land. Well, for me, it's baked in a lot of stuff. So it sounds like according to you, if you're saying, well, once it's baked, that the only true God is the blue box.
Starting point is 00:09:05 That's my underrated. I make a mean baked mac and cheese that I'm going to have to make for you and have you taste test it. See, it will be better because it came straight from out of your oven or whatever and there's the right amount of portion to balance out the ingredients. And it's so bad for you. The trick to it is just adding extra of the stuff that's really bad yeah it's so just like milk yeah just so much so much sharp cheddar cheese
Starting point is 00:09:32 uh yeah and so that dovetails like you said the blue box my underrated chemical macaroni and cheese craft macaroni and cheese hellals. That's my jam. That's also Her Majesty, my lady, my girlfriend, that's also her jam too. And I didn't realize, I didn't know about spirals until like literally I think three weeks ago. When we were at the store, I was like oh I'm getting spirals. They're better. I'm like they don't look like
Starting point is 00:09:58 shit. And then you realize you get more surface area that can bind to the cheese and it's actually superior noodle. I love it. I love it. And it probably holds a little bit better, whereas the other ones break apart.
Starting point is 00:10:10 The thin tubes, they break apart too easily. Wait, now, do you fuck with the deluxe, or you just go straight up original? Because, you know, there's levels now. Because Kraft, they have a wide offering now for their box mac and cheese. Oh, you mean sizes? No, there's like the deluxe. Because when I was a kid, I'd put away a family-sized box. Oh, you mean sizes? No, there's the deluxe. Because when I was a kid, I'd put away a family-sized box.
Starting point is 00:10:27 No, no, no. That'd be regular. But there's a... Let me just pull this up. You mean in terms of cheesiness? Yeah, because they have the one that's in the shiny box that has more of a metallic ink print. No, I'm just going original Kraft Spirals mac and cheese. If you want to add something, just get a Kroger's shredded sharp cheddar cheese and just add like half a bag of that shit.
Starting point is 00:10:47 That'll spice it up. Oh, just turn it up a little bit more? Yeah, turn it up a little bit. And growing up, we would throw hot dogs in our mac and cheese. Yeah. That was like a full-time dinner. Just Rochelle, Illinois. Also, I have a question.
Starting point is 00:10:58 Why are Chicago people so hostile towards ketchup? I don't know. Because I've met people on both sides of this argument where people go, I don't put ketchup on my hot dog, but I don't know. Because I've met people on both sides of this argument where people go, fuck ketchup, man. I don't put ketchup on my hot dog, but I don't care what anybody else does.
Starting point is 00:11:09 Do you put ketchup? Do you eat french fries with ketchup? Of course. Because I saw images of restaurants where they're like, we don't even have ketchup for your fucking fries.
Starting point is 00:11:16 What do they put on the fries? I don't know. I just saw how hard-lined people were being, and then there was a post that went viral like two weeks ago of a transit electric sign on one of the interstates going into chicago that said no
Starting point is 00:11:28 speeding no texting no ketchup yeah that's that was a real construction sign on yeah on the kennedy and i was like catch up on your hot dog just catch up on your hot dog should be like outlawed for people over seven years old okay yeah that's usually the rule but i think like at gene and jude's in chicago they don't even have ketchup in the you can't in yeah, that's usually the rule. But I think like at Gene and Jude's in Chicago, they don't even have ketchup in the building. In the building, that's what I mean. Yeah, you can't even get it. But it seems like they took that and were like,
Starting point is 00:11:52 okay, and fuck ketchup forever on everything. And that's crazy. I don't know why anybody would care. Go that far. Or just care. How do I care how you eat your food? Yeah. Well, you're too woke, Dan.
Starting point is 00:12:05 Fucking snowflake. I literally, I just don't understand why anyone would care how anyone else eats their food. Big SJW over here. See, this is what
Starting point is 00:12:12 R. Kelly was talking about when he was saying what's wrong with Chicago. It's not like we're forking knife in a candy bar. Oh, God. That's my line. And finally,
Starting point is 00:12:21 what is a myth? What's something people think is true that you know to be false? That deer are like loving loving cute animal creatures they're vicious yeah deer are essentially they're just huge rodents they are i mean if they're like yeah they overpopulate right way overpopulate like people who are like oh you can't like that are i don't know anybody personally who uh hunts deer that isn't used like using almost all that entire animal and like does it and like with a group of people so everybody gets a portion
Starting point is 00:12:52 of it so i don't know anybody who's wasteful hunting like sport killing right animals so let me say that first but uh like the hunting that i've grown up on that i know it's it really is one those people are using it for nutrition and they're saving money on – they're eating what they kill. Yeah. But also they're curbing that population. Those animals are rodents. I'm not saying they don't look cute, but they're also – But they deserve to die.
Starting point is 00:13:15 I think they're beautiful animals, but like behaviorally they can fuck shit up. Have you ever seen the video of the deer that just bursts through the windshield of the bus and just like no it's awesome it just starts like rocking around like it's like at a fucking metal concert and it's just wrecking is the bus moving or just i think the bus is moving when it bursts through and then they just have to like everybody runs out and then they have to like open it and just let it out well it's just like like if you know if somebody's like well they're beautiful yeah i i agree they're beautiful but Yeah, I agree. They're beautiful. But you don't – they work in a way that like they'll ruin people's like crops of farmland. Sure, sure, sure.
Starting point is 00:13:52 Just ruin it. And you don't really hear that about like bears or – you know what I mean? Like they're an animal that lives. They don't like demolish like an ecosystem. Yeah, they don't become a pest. Right. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So that is something I don't think most people know or think about.
Starting point is 00:14:06 It's not in California, at least for me. Oh yeah, 100%. The only things I know are coyotes and rats. Yeah. And those are my pets. But you think about some of those animals, like a possum just looks ugly. It can't help it. Hey, I know. My mother is a fucking possum advocate. She keeps a possum family.
Starting point is 00:14:22 Yeah, right? They're cool animals. They're very family-oriented. They handle their shit when they're not trying to bother anybody else at night. They don't have rabies. Right. You know what I mean? But they just don't look cute, so they're not, like, Disney's not gonna make a movie about them. Yo, Disney, I was just gonna say, so my son has a book that's, like,
Starting point is 00:14:39 Thumper Counts to Ten, and one of them is, like, Seven Possums Hang from a Tree. And it's just, like, nah, man, you can't even pull this off. They're still fucking scary looking. They're not cool looking. It's like a possum mother with seven baby possums hanging from a tree, and they're smiling,
Starting point is 00:14:56 and I'm just like, nah. Still not happening, guys. I saw a clip of a woman walking a possum on a leash through a park, and I was like, that, I thought it was my mom. I was really concerned it could have been my mom at first, but she's too much about their freedom. She's like, I just leave the food out in the water
Starting point is 00:15:11 so they can survive. All right, let's get into it, guys. Dan, you work out. I know this about you. You're a fit guy. Do you work out at a gym? Yes. Okay.
Starting point is 00:15:23 And at home and hotels. I like you're just gonna say, nah, I have a fit guy. Do you work out at a gym? Yes. Okay. And at home and hotels. I like you're just going to say, nah, I have a storage locker. Just like lift gallon jugs over my head. Fucking gym. All right. Only at LA Metro stops. Or like the uptown dudes in New York just doing pull-ups on the fucking crosswalk sign. So there are some people at gyms, right, who don't necessarily know how to act in public.
Starting point is 00:15:48 They're there for the show. They want to be the show. Right. And I think we have a new high in this category of people who just come looking to make a statement. So Planet Fitness, their motto is this is a judgment-free zone, and the idea is we're not sitting here like you don't have a bunch of personal trainers being like, oh, you're not throwing plates around, bro? Like, what the fuck is that?
Starting point is 00:16:13 Hey, man, your fucking delts are not really developed for your size. Don't they have like a meathead alarm in their place too? Like if you're one of those guys walking around with like a two-gallon jug of water, they'll like hit the meathead alarm. No. Yeah, dude. They're serious about that lie on it. No. Yeah, dude. They're serious about that shit? Yes.
Starting point is 00:16:27 Wow. Oh, so this is just for regular- If you're wearing a weightlifting belt, they'll be like, hey, yeah. Hey, what are you, concerned about your back? Yeah. Your safety? Get the fuck out. They're like, hey, we're super accepting of all types of people who want to work out except you.
Starting point is 00:16:39 Yeah. So you need to go. You need to go to the fucking scream gym. Get over to Gold's. There are plenty of those gyms, though, for people who are very, very serious about shit. But this dude took that to mean, judgment-free zone, to mean that he could just show up and work out nude. Yeah. Well, it's in New Hampshire.
Starting point is 00:16:55 You know, so I kind of, in a way, I thought. Way off New Hampshire. Hey, my man, the motto is live free or die. Yeah, that's true. You know what I mean? So in a way, I understand that this guy, his name is Eric Stagno or Stagno, 34 years old, pulled up. Apparently this is what they say. The story from witnesses is that the guy walked in, stripped down right there in front, left the clothes and belongings at the front desk,
Starting point is 00:17:18 walked back and forth across the gym a couple times, and then settled in over at the yoga mats. And then when officers arrived, they said they found him nude in a, quote, yoga-type position. So I don't know if they don't know yoga and he could have been doing tree pose or something, warrior shoe. Shot around him. Yeah. Some dive bomber push-ups.
Starting point is 00:17:35 I don't know. You know what I mean? Downward dog, upward dog, cobra. But they said the only comment he made was that he thought it was a judgment-free zone. So is he doing a bit? That's what I'm saying. Is he trying to prove a point? Who knows? He kind of looks like he isn't doing a judgment-free zone. So is he doing a bit? That's what I'm saying. He's trying to prove a point. He kind of looks like he
Starting point is 00:17:47 isn't doing a bit. He looks like a bit. Yeah, he looks like he might... I don't know. He would be one of those dudes who you're like, are you a hipster or are you... Homeless. Homeless. It's a fine line. In Los Angeles, yeah. From a police perspective, that's kind of how you first have to come into
Starting point is 00:18:04 it, right? We need to figure out is this a mental health issue yeah or just a dude fucking around yeah and then that's kind of like your path and that's what you know if you just smack them around because if it's a bit you're like the fuck is wrong with you man right you're mentally ill you're like okay so let's kind of have to start there right like very like, hey, buddy. Yeah, at the very least. What's up, dude? Hey, man. Namaste, my man. Right. Are you good? The fact that he was doing yoga is the least surprising detail of this story.
Starting point is 00:18:34 This dude who has, like, a long beard and accidental dreadlock looking like it's forming on top of his head definitely looks he he was there to do yoga also because like you're not going to be working around free weights with your shit just hanging that's what i was i was gonna ask you guys for some truth right you're gonna you you have to be naked in a gym uh-huh you have and you have to perform one type of workout and or exercise, what would you do naked in the gym? And you have to choose one. Elliptical, treadmill, basketball. I would get on a squat sled. You're leaning in.
Starting point is 00:19:12 On my back. You're leaning in. On my back. Showing off those thicky fits. Yeah, just pushing out and you're like, oh, my God. I don't know what I'm looking at. I think that would feel – because, look, if you're going to do it, I might as well pull a power move and make everyone as uncomfortable as I am. at. I think that would feel, because look, if you're going to do it, I might as well pull a power move
Starting point is 00:19:25 and make everyone as uncomfortable as I am. Right. Yeah. I'm not an exhibitionist, so I would be like, you know what, fuck it,
Starting point is 00:19:31 I'm just going to make this a moment. I would just avoid anything, anything that has that like sticky pleather on it, because then it's touching parts of your body that aren't meant to
Starting point is 00:19:43 are touching things that people have like sweat on and you can never really get the sweat out. Right. So I'd probably just do jumping jacks or something. Some calisthenics? Just really flopping about. You're in my mirror, man. What about you, Daniel?
Starting point is 00:19:59 What would you do? Maybe just the elliptical. Yeah. Just low impact and not too yeah you don't want to be too bouncy it might be interesting to see what your body looks like working out nude don't you think oh yeah yeah yeah you get a whole different perspective on on how you're engaging in this exercise i think we have a whole new video series we can start i guarantee probably what this shit what this shit looks like underneath your clothes right doesn't have to be nude workouts on the internet oh for sure oh yeah oh yeah of all the people of
Starting point is 00:20:29 all different walks of life can you imagine there's probably a nude yoga retreat they're in la every weekend somewhere right oh i'm sure yeah right now i'm sure it's like an airbnb experience that you can do nude yoga in the hollywood hills i might i might do it with dreadhead if i felt better about myself i would do it. With Dreadhead. If I felt better about myself, I would do it. Hey, this is a judgment-free zone, man. Okay, here we go. All right.
Starting point is 00:20:51 Sound of clothes taking off. If you had to record one podcast nude, what would it be? No. The Daily with Michael Barbaro. Yeah. Because those mm, mm, I'd be like, what you mm-ing? That's just my conversational nature. All right, guys. So I did want to just check in.
Starting point is 00:21:10 So this caught my eye, that Equalizer 2, the Denzel Washington vehicle, his first sequel in his career. Ended up at number one over the weekend. It made $34 million just in America alone. Over the weekend, it made $34 million just in America alone. And this jogged my memory back to the Sony hack, which I know we don't like to give North Korea that, that they revealed some problematic things about our country, but they did. I don't like to think about the Sony hack and remember that that was simpler times. Right. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:42 I know. Isn't that crazy? The Sony hack. And you're like, dude, James Franco needs to watch out. They do not like him. But there was this email thread where this producer was waxing philosophical about whether or not they should green light this movie. The sequel or the first one? The sequel. Equalizer 2. And his whole thing was look babe denzel is my favorite actor of his generation period point blank he's the best uh but but we can't green light it unless you just want to hit singles i'm looking to hit home runs and the fact fact is that African-Americans do not do well overseas.
Starting point is 00:22:29 And he was like, basically, other countries are racist. And therefore, I'm saying that we shouldn't make a movie with a black man in the lead. So even though our country is so progressive, we haven't figured out these people in Greece. Here's the flowchart. We've solved racism. Okay, next step. What about these other countries? No. Also, I'm pretty sure Bad Boys
Starting point is 00:22:56 did really well overseas. And Bad Boys 2. And it's Denzel. Will Smith is widely seen as the last American movie star who can open a movie just regardless of what movie it is overseas. People are just like, yeah, Will Smith is the last movie star. But this dude wanted to sound, I feel like there's this kind of bias where it's like, oh, well, it's a harsh truth, but that must mean it's true. That must mean that it's a smart thing to say.
Starting point is 00:23:24 Yeah. Ben Shapiro type. But I mean, it is interesting to see how defined this sort of shit was, like, because, you know, you look at the movies that were made for the vast majority of movie history and including up till now. And, you know, how many just white male leads there are like just a shocking number and it's like you don't think that they're like look we got to make it a white male lead we got to make movies with white men in the lead role like specifically like actually voicing that in emails white man apparently yeah apparently they were uh and you know it's a self-fulfilling thing because they match the production budget, however much it costs to make, with a marketing budget. And if you think that, you know, based
Starting point is 00:24:13 on your brilliant analysis of the marketplace overseas, that it's not going to make its money back, you probably hold back a little bit on the marketing budget. So therefore, that probably hurts things. Right. What is the movie about? The Equalizer. Denzel Washington is a superhero, basically. He's the best at killing. In like seconds. Yes.
Starting point is 00:24:35 He can guess how many seconds it would take him to kill a room full of people. And he knows exactly based on his surroundings how many ways he could kill you. So he's like Rain Man, but with murder? Yes. Do you remember the TV show? No. That was an old white dude. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:51 Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. And it was called The Equalizer, and he would just go around writing wrongs on the down low for people. Oh, shit. Yeah. And now that's essentially what Denzel is doing. But I think the first one, he kind of gets pulled into it a little bit. And it seems in the second one he's back into it.
Starting point is 00:25:06 He's like, this is me. He's just trying to lead a quiet life as like a cab driver in Boston. Yeah, like under siege. Then he sees some shit. Yeah. There's this young woman who like he reads literature in a cafe at night. And she like comes in and she's had like a fucked up life. And he tries to take
Starting point is 00:25:25 care of her and then like she gets fucked up by the russian mob i was literally gonna say what the russian mob shows up takes down the entire russian mafia by himself in 58 seconds it is so much fun uh but yeah it's basically like all right if the takenen franchise had stayed about as good as the first Taken and had a, like I think Liam Neeson's a good actor, but had like the best actor playing the lead role. It's like Mercury Rising meets Taken meets John Wick. Right. Okay.
Starting point is 00:25:58 It's got some John Wick in it. Meets Under Siege. Meets Under Siege. Great. And that's what you call an elevator pitch. My favorite thing in all those movies is that one scene where somebody tells someone else who they're dealing with. Right. Well, you don't know who this guy is?
Starting point is 00:26:11 Oh, yeah. Oh, let me tell you. So-and-so has blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Because there's a big scene like that in Under Siege, which is the first one I remember. Like, he's not just a cook. This guy, black ops, special. Right. Like, they give you, someone finally gives someone else a rundown of who they're dealing with here yeah it's always my favorite just a chef man what was the thing in
Starting point is 00:26:30 that mark walberg preview where he was like you need to be careful man he's like you need to be careful bro he's like you should be you should be careful bro you're talking to mark walberg himself man you gotta do it all day. Have you seen the preview for his newest movie? Mile 22? Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, man. Oh, you know what movie you were thinking of?
Starting point is 00:26:49 Contraband, I think. And he's in the trailer. He's like, oh, what? You think you're the only person who brought a gun? No, it was Mile 22. Oh, it was Mile 22? Yeah, because we just watched it a couple weeks ago. And it was something he was like, you should be careful.
Starting point is 00:27:01 Or like the bad guy. You should be careful, bro. Bro, you should be careful, dude. All bad guy you should be careful bro you should be careful dude all right we're gonna take a quick break we'll be right back Daphne Caruana Galizia was a Maltese investigative journalist who on October 16th 2017 was murdered there are crooks everywhere you look now. Starting point is 00:31:21 There was one, a mass shooting in Toronto where a guy went on a spree. Twelve people were injured. One died. And a shooter too, yeah. Yeah. And there was a stat that this brought to a lot of people's attention that 98% of crime guns come from the United States, which is, it goes to show you how rare gun crime is in Canada, that they call them crime guns.
Starting point is 00:31:43 Yeah. They haven't just shifted to guns like them crime guns. Yeah. That just makes me want to move to Canada. They haven't just shifted to guns like we have here. Yeah. Well, it's also true in the other direction, too. Mexico is also, there are a lot of murders being committed with American, like, it's just, it's going on both sides of the border, like both directions now. Hmm.
Starting point is 00:31:58 Because- Our cup runneth over. Yeah, literally. There was also another shooting, I think, in Pennsylvania where a guy confronted a dude who was yelling racist shit at his friend and then when he approached him outside the guy just shot him dead the racist yelling guy yeah the racist shot the guy who's sticking up for his friend who was a dad and then uh and then silver lake in la there was a police chase that ended at trader joe's and the story was that the guy had taken hostages, and there was one person who was shot to death, and I think the assumption was just that the guy who was taking the hostages killed the
Starting point is 00:32:36 young woman. She was 27, I think a manager at Trader Joe's, and it just came out this morning there was actually a cop who shot her accidentally astray officers around. Which is horrible for every single person involved. Yes. And that's just, man, I mean, and like the defense they gave was like, we just had to start clapping shots into the store, even though there was a crowd, which sometimes, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:33:02 I can understand when your adrenaline's pumping, like what that does to somebody. Or you're worried that that person's going to just start shooting every other person walking around. It's an awful situation. And you're like, do the math in your head of like, what are the odds I can hit this guy against the odds that he's also just going to start shooting anyone walking around on this street? Yeah. It would just be interesting to look into how often gun deaths are caused by friendly fire. That would be interesting research. Yeah, but you can't find that because the government and the NRA have worked together to make it almost impossible to research gun violence in any form.
Starting point is 00:33:36 Like newspapers need to actually compile the statistics and do all this legwork because the there's just nobody paying attention to that shit because and anytime your industry is like we don't don't pay attention to us like that that's kind of a sign that there might be something bad going on there yeah hold on since the cdc is like nearly legally sort of prohibited from actually researching this stuff. Right. Yeah, it makes it very hard to have any kind of, yeah, meaningful analysis would help in things like this. Yep.
Starting point is 00:34:14 All right. So there's a big story happening right now about how the left is divided and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has pushed everybody to the left and James Comey has come out and said, come on, Democrats, don't go crazy here. With the socialism. Yeah, with the socialism. That's exactly what Trump wants. And James Comey, famous Democrat, James Comey.
Starting point is 00:34:41 Yeah, exactly. Also, bro, you're still here? Get the fuck out of here. So that's what he was... I was gone at Democrat James Conley. Yeah, exactly. Also, like, bro, you're still here? Like, get the fuck out of here. So, that's what he was. I was gone at Comic-Con for, like, five days. But that's what he was referring to was her rise in popularity and exposure. Yeah, there have been a lot of think pieces about because of her huge win or, you know, her monumental win. Then it was like, oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:35:01 Does this mean, like, the whole party is going to shift, like, so far far left i think someone even said like left of putin or something what right on fox or some shit it's just that's not it's yeah it's it's kicked off this whole thing where like a lot of people who we realize now are established democrat establishment democrats like writing pieces were like this is dangerous and like this is a losing strategy or whatever and joe lieberman yeah exactly connecticut but like yeah so yeah there's been a huge there's been like momentum you know for a lot of the stuff that uh alexandria court ocasio-cortez was campaigning on because it's just very simple shit like hey how about fair fairness for everyone essentially is what it boils down to like
Starting point is 00:35:45 publicly funded schools and like you shouldn't have to afford to live so you can get health care or you know like justice reform and things like that um so what was interesting was this morning on fox and friends there was an editor from the daily caller very conservative i wouldn't even call it news outlet. Message board for scared conservatives, the Daily Caller, where this woman went to a rally in St. Louis, where Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was stumping for this candidate, Cori Bush. And, you know, she said she wanted to see what the whole fuss was about, because it was clearly like resonating in Missouri, like a lot of people were getting excited. And this is just this is her like, we have a couple parts of her report back of what she saw.
Starting point is 00:36:27 So based upon what you saw, why are people drawn to this message? They say things that everybody wants, especially like if you're a parent, they talk about education for your kids, health care for your kids, these the things that you want. You know, if you're not really paying attention to how they're going to pay for it or, If you're not really paying attention to how they're going to pay for it or the rest of that, it's easy to fall into that trap and say, my kids deserve this. And, well, maybe the government should be responsible for helping me with that. Okay. It is easy to say that. Well, they're going to say stuff that you're going to like, like your kids should be educated or have health care.
Starting point is 00:37:04 Right. Then I like the tack of like, but they don't talk about where it's going to like. Like your kids should be educated or have health care. Right. Then I like the tack of like, but they don't talk about where it's going to come from. Right. And that's where they raise the specter of spooky socialism about how it's just like,
Starting point is 00:37:14 I guess the version that the right pushes is it's invisible, like just money from where? From where? And they're very, they are very clear about, oh yeah, from the top 1%
Starting point is 00:37:23 who makes billions of dollars. Rather than give them huge tax breaks, you can actually think of all the money that those wealthy people saved. And now imagine that going into your community, into your schools, to subsidize your health care, to create federally guaranteed jobs. But they avoid that whole thing completely. And this relationship to it is very interesting. So then after like as she goes on, they say, well, how did that make you feel being in like this spooky place where they speak of equality? Virginia, as a conservative, when you're sitting in that audience, how did it make you feel? I was mostly uncomfortable because I was surrounded by a group of people who were talking about how they had gotten involved because they were tired of being
Starting point is 00:38:09 angry all the time. It seems like so much effort to be angry about everything. I'm sorry. What? Yeah, that's the problem with the left. They're always angry about everything. All aware of their situation. This is the thing.
Starting point is 00:38:25 That's what I was going to say. If you could get this country to be self-aware on every side of the aisle, we would advance so much farther in one day. We'd live in a fruitopia. I'm not saying agree. I'm not saying all think the same. I'm literally just talking about self-awareness. Where you're like, oh, I ask this of my adversary do i ask it of myself right yeah just that just that just that much just that am i playing by the same
Starting point is 00:38:51 rules i demand of other people i demand to know where they're gonna do all these socialist things am i asking what was i asking in 2016 for trump to explain to me how he was gonna do anything just just forget where you fall on it whether you're listening to me or you like me or hate me. I'm just saying self-awareness would just push us in such a stronger direction as a people. Well, this is why it feels like the right has to do a lot of mental work to completely divorce themselves from the realities of these kinds of things. Cause like we talk all the time about like wage stagnation and like how economic growth has been completely decoupled from like wages, despite there being growth wages of like flattened out and it's not tied to growth anymore. So yeah, people at the top are doing great,
Starting point is 00:39:37 but no one functionally is being paid more for their job as things become more expensive. And like, you know, obviously we've the time and time again, we see how they're right. They do a masterful job at refocusing their base's outrage over their lack of opportunity or access to things like education and healthcare to be like, no, it's the immigrants or the blacks or the NFL, gay, Muslim, whatever the fuck the boogeyman is. Because it has to be literally anyone but the ceos who are on average making 66 times more than their like their lowest paid employees or whatever right you know and like that's that's sort of the game plan here and like i guess when someone has to go
Starting point is 00:40:17 into that environment where a candidate just very plainly is like this is what i think i'm like what is a fair deal right you should be able to get all of these things subsidized for you because that actually frees, that creates your stability, your ability to have a better quality of life, to spend time with your children and just generally be, you know, like I said, just increase your overall quality of life. It's just an odd thing now that, you know, they only want to argue the label of socialism and not the substance of it. Right. Like, it was just like, oh, i don't know where that's going to come from and like megan mccain and like whoopi goldberg and
Starting point is 00:40:50 joy behar like went like fucking wild on the view i guess this morning where megan mccain just kept going think about venezuela name me one country where socialism's worked and like they just rattled off a bunch of like scandinavian countries who've you know but the very least they have a higher quality of life index than most than most places and all megan mccain could do is like you know this is how it starts and i can't believe socialism is getting normalized here socialism but wouldn't actually address what the fucking substance of what these people are campaigning on is about isn't it possible to have socially minded issues without being quote quote unquote, full blanket socialist?
Starting point is 00:41:27 Where you're like, yeah, we're a free market, but we also really want everybody to have healthcare. Yeah, you could just say certain things like we can socialize the healthcare industry. Right. Or like, you know, education. But I think when you want to fight against something, you try to say all of it. You know what I mean? Yeah, of course.
Starting point is 00:41:42 Like when your girlfriend says to you like, well well it made me mad when you did that and then you respond to her or him saying uh uh why are you calling me a dick like i didn't say you're a dick right i said i have an issue with this this specific thing right but so it's like when you come back at something you're like well they want to ruin everything like that's i guess one way to misinterpret what somebody said. Like, yeah, that stuff just... The idea, too, that you were saying, like, it's never the CEOs. I mean, the greatest thing that currently, in my opinion, the Republican Party has done has managed to make, like,
Starting point is 00:42:18 the religious base link arms with the CEOs in suits. Yeah. And they're on the same side of the line even though so much of the and not all of it at all but at least where i come from like so much of the religious community isn't doing that well right and i'm not saying that's across the board or if you're religious you're not doing well i'm just saying that like you only have to be as long as you're one of those two things you vote on this side and you've almost like not taken into account your life or that the person you're standing on the same side of is prospering and living in every way better than you right you don't seem to care because you vote for this
Starting point is 00:42:55 religious reason and they vote for tax cuts and you guys are buddies i guess well there's also something so fundamentally anti-rich guy about the core message of christianity like christianity is one of the most anti-rich uh philosophies ever like anywhere and it's just crazy you believe in the bible jesus literally flipped tables against people just making money off of yeah but it is sort of a there's the marriage of convenience for both sides, I think. Well, and again, I think we're clearly seeing, I think we almost have a nearly equivalent wealth gap as Russia does, like in terms of haves and have-nots.
Starting point is 00:43:36 It's going to be harder now for people to sort of go through life and clearly see what team they're on, if they're the people making all the money or the people who are like struggling every fucking day which is one of the reasons why i think you know like even with bernie's message in his during the primaries and things in the lead up to the nomination was resonating with people because he was like sort of communicating to struggling people too of just sort of like hey life can be better i think we can all agree on that and like and why aren't fucking rich people paying their fair share?
Starting point is 00:44:07 And like even with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is like explosion and popularity. This message of like we want we want what is fair for all people like across the board. It's generally an inoffensive platform because it just sort of speaks to our need as human beings to have our needs met. And again, like, yeah, when they say, well, I don't know if the government should have to pay for it. platform because it just sort of speaks to our need as human beings to have our needs met. And again, like, yeah, when they say, well, I don't know if the government should have to pay for it. Why don't they extend that analysis a bit further and say, well, I guess the people who can pay for it are like people who aren't like us, even the people on TV who are making billions of dollars hand over fist. So were you alluding to the guys, were you alluding to the issue that
Starting point is 00:44:41 also within the democratic party, there's people who are like, that it's split? Or is that just a narrative from the right? No, I think it's definitely split. And, you know, there's, it's definitely a narrative that is being pushed as something that's very dangerous by both the right and by centrist Democrats. Like Joe Lieberman just put out a op-ed where he was like, this is going to doom us all. And he's the guy who was- But it's probably because he's afraid of losing his position. Right. Well, the conventional wisdom is that the more moderate you are, the more centrist you are, the better able you're going to be to get to all the- being reelected. Yeah, everybody, essentially. But, you know, that just doesn't
Starting point is 00:45:27 seem to be how things have worked in the past handful of years. Although I just heard Nate Silver say that it is still statistically shown to be the centrists who win. So I need to look into that more. Maybe, but I mean, if you look on a continuum of the USSR. I think of health care in Scandinavian countries or in Canada or something like that. Or having child care paid for and things like that. Right. Because you've got to work. We get it.
Starting point is 00:46:18 And I think that there are people who are a little bit older than me who hear socialism and it's a bad word immediately and people who are just a little bit younger than me who hear socialism and they're like what why the fuck is that a bad word yeah i think it has to do with like a generational gap of where you heard that word as propaganda or you were you heard that word as definition yeah yeah exactly and yeah and again if even if you take all it away and you just talk to somebody like hey don't you think it's fucked up that some people are so poor they die because they just don't have access to health care and like their lives are cut short due to fucking financial reasons right like don't you think that's wrong and people probably like
Starting point is 00:46:57 yeah that's kind of that's pretty fucked up or they know somebody who's been who struggled with medical bills like the idea of struggling with medical bills should be absurd to everyone yeah and then to be like well i think there is a way to do that because we're giving a lot of money away to people who are just sitting on it while the meanwhile the fucking life is sucked out of everyone else right uh but yeah i mean that's why i think it's interesting to see more and more democrats are actually putting more jobs or bills forward that are kind of in line with this like roe conanna, who's a freshman congressman, is trying to put like he's he's putting a bill together that is like, you know, more FDR minded, like federally guaranteed jobs bills where they have like, you know, they're trying to create as much opportunity for people who are trying to work.
Starting point is 00:47:40 And like, you know, Cory Booker has a certain as a similar bill, too. I think it's like a pilot program with with federally guaranteed jobs in areas with like high unemployment. Like, you know, the right isn't doing things like, hey, we got to fucking figure out how we're going to get these people jobs or like we have a lot of skilled people in construction that can't work right now because apparently right now construction is the hardest job in terms of skilled labor, like where it's very hard to get employed again after you've been laid off. And the right has no interest in that. They're just like, okay, how do we win this rhetorical trade war and then like, you know, drain farmers or how do we, you know, how do we give these tax cuts away or how do we kneecap Obamacare? Like everything is completely antithetical to, you know, the sort of fairness thing that we're talking about. That's just so I think it's it's interesting why the how the Republicans can't even see what the appeal is of this to people and even try and fucking do something like that. I think the closest thing that we've seen to that is like Trump talking about using like old New Deal.
Starting point is 00:48:42 I think they're like back from the New Deal programs to like help these farmers who are getting squeezed by the tariff like in the trade wars. Yeah. I was asking earlier today like how the Democrats in 2016 fucked up Facebook because Obama had used Facebook to win in 2008 and 2012. And I think we came to the conclusion that it was just kind of arrogance and taking for granted that, you know, the Hillary campaign took for granted that, oh, well, we are going to win because this is how it's been for the past two elections. And so they didn't end up doing all of the, you know, frankly, manipulative shit that the Obama campaigns did that won them the election. I think the same thing could be happening with the Republicans and that like working person vote in the sense that they can now take it for granted that they just have the blue collar, you know, cultural appeal. So they don't have to think about that shit, like the actual economics. And, you know, so I do think there's probably an opportunity for Democrats or, you know, caring conservatives. there's probably an opportunity for democrats or you know caring conservatives well that's the other thing that's why obamacare like none of these
Starting point is 00:49:50 people in the midterms there's an analysis done like a lot of these people in like the really contested seats uh that are up for grabs in november a lot of them are like republicans are staying away from the repeal and replace thing because they realize that's like a fucking third rail it's becoming a third rail issue and a lot of it's the most popular it's ever been because people realize like oh shit this is actually relief for me to have this this subsidized health care something that you just said jack uh there was a uh an interview done with facebook like a year after the election facebook offered to embed people in each campaign office right yeah and hillary just turned him down yeah and and trump took four yeah okay we'll take and they had him there every single
Starting point is 00:50:31 day and he was like no we're good no we're good do you see who we're running against yeah also i'm taking the the person of color minority vote totally for granted right so simultaneously um and then the other thing i was going to ask you, though, both of you, is so like, but don't you kind of feel that people only literally care about what's in front of their face, whether that's their wallet or their car or their house or their kid or their job? And as long as you even maybe on one of those things do well by them, the average American is like, like I said to somebody, I'm like, if gas can get back to around $2 a gallon, Trump will get reelected, period. Yeah, I guess if he can message it and tell the story that it was his policies. Oh, yeah, he'll make it his narrative. I'm not worried about that part of it. Right.
Starting point is 00:51:17 That has to be coming. people in america because of the just sort of capital free market culture that uh has sort of taken hold that yeah i i agree that it's you know whoever is actually helping you out but i feel like americans aren't used to being helped out where they know that's why i'm saying they interpret it wrong right but even the tariff stuff isn't that just like screwing over farmers all over the midwest yeah yeah yeah but the thing is like i think the middle class story of the U.S. is like Ja Rule's career, where in the 50s, you could be a janitor and like, yeah, I sent my kids to fucking college and I had a stay-at-home wife or whatever. That's the holla, holla moment for the middle class.
Starting point is 00:51:59 And then from there, we've just been writing that memory to the fucking fire festival of fucking just disasters where people are still like, yeah, Ja Rule. Miles knows that I only understand metaphors if he puts it in terms of Ja Rule's career. Only murder ink artists. Now, let me compare Ashanti to the Fed. No, but what I mean is that idea, that myth of the America that our parents grew up in and our grandparents were like yeah that was great and even like for me like on my dad's side my grandfather was a bus driver and he's still able to to create a private business became one of the first independently like successful black business people he there was a there was this there was a time where even as racist as it was i mean for i, mostly you had to be very fortunate as a
Starting point is 00:52:45 person of color or, but for most people, there was a possibility that you could just have this one job and support your family because that's, that was just how things were done. And now I think people look back at that and they're like, well, my dad did it. Right. Grandparents did it. Yeah. I should be able to do it without the government's help. Specifically those people who are still in power to a large degree, those past the baby boomers the our grandparents generation you know they are like well i did it yeah what the fuck's wrong with you millennials and it's like well they're dealing with a completely different economic reality because you're looking at the billboard charts from 1999 and you see jaw rule at the top still. He came back with I'm Real. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:53:25 And then I was like, all right. What's all this Drake trash? Are you Ellie? But at the same time back then, a TV cost as much as a car. Well, that's the thing. We have good phones. Yeah. I saw a statistic once. It was something like, and forgive me, just give me the grace on this to prove the point,
Starting point is 00:53:40 that in like 1972, a person coming out of college the average starting salary was maybe like around 19 20 grand a year right in a brand new car cost 28 of their annual income it was like six grand or something like that for a car right sorry for that percentage as well but it's rough uh now the average starting salary for a person coming out of college is like $27,000 or like $28,000 a year. And a new car based off the same stuff is 100%, if not more, of their start. And I'm not talking about a crazy car, like a $25,000 car. It's 96% of their income. An accord with most shit in it is like $25,000, $28,000.
Starting point is 00:54:22 And it's just that is where our discrepancy is, like you said, of like, well, this is your living and this is what you want. Good fucking law. Yeah, and that's because the costs have gone up, but the wages have not gone up in proportionate terms. But the things that have gotten less expensive are electronics, not cars. That's why people are fooled. Phones, TVs. That's what has a lot of us fooled is because these consumer goods have gone down in cost. So we're like, oh, shit, we're not going to have seven fucking flat strings.
Starting point is 00:54:50 Right. But we'd be fine if, with that money of what people get paid, we would be fine if Reaganomics, if trickle-down economics worked. Right. If it actually worked 30 years ago, we would be fine. But it doesn't. And I think that's already, like, early reports now is the newest tech breaks are doing the same exact thing oh yeah that the ceos are making more money but you're not seeing growth you might even you might see some hiring growth
Starting point is 00:55:13 but you are not seeing wage growth at all to wages people yeah but those at&t employees got that one time bonus oh yeah never mind never mind yeah yeah So what was your point again? I don't think I had one. It is dull. Yeah, we would be we would also be fine if you could ride your flat screen TV to work. Oh, hell yeah. Oh, yeah. So work on that, guys. All right. We're going to take another quick break. We'll be right back. Daphne Caruana Galizia was a Maltese investigative journalist who on October 16, 2017, was murdered. There are crooks everywhere you look now. The situation is desperate. My name is Manuel Delia. Starting point is 00:56:07 Daphne exposed the culture of crime and corruption that were turning her beloved country into a mafia state. And she paid the ultimate price. Should we wake her up?
Starting point is 00:57:59 Absolutely not. What was that? You didn't figure it out? I think I need to hear you say it. That was live audio of a woman's nightmare. This machine is approved and everything? You're allowed to be doing this? We passed the review board a year ago.
Starting point is 00:58:15 We're not hurting people. There's nothing dangerous about what you're doing. They're just dreams. Dream Sequence is a new horror thriller from Blumhouse Television, iHeartRadio, and Realm. They're just dreams. mariachi, delicious cuisine, and of course, lucha libre. It doesn't get more Mexican than this. Lucha libre is known globally because it is much more than just a sport and much more than just entertainment. Lucha libre is a type of storytelling. It's a dance. It's tradition. It's culture.
Starting point is 00:58:57 This is Lucha Libre Behind the Mask, a 12-episode podcast in both English and Spanish about the history and cultural richness of Lucha Libre. Starting point is 00:59:28 Listen to Lucha Libre Behind the Mask as part of My Cultura Podcast Network on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you stream podcasts. And we're back. And just real quick, note that the number one trending thing right now on Google is goldfish. A bunch of different types of goldfish have been recalled for potentially having salmonella. Well, don't eat a fucking goldfish.
Starting point is 00:59:59 Not that kind of goldfish. What do you mean? Like the crackers. Oh, Pepperidge Farms? Yes. I love fishes because they're so delicious. Uh-huh. Gonna go fishing.
Starting point is 01:00:07 So if you're like my household and that's one of your main food groups. That's a staple? Yeah. I need to make a phone call. I fucking love goldfish. My homeboy Ian,
Starting point is 01:00:18 he loves them so much. He fucking to this day keeps a fucking full bag in his glove box. Really? Just on deck for whatever reason. He's like, I might just need a snack. I haven't had goldfish in years.
Starting point is 01:00:29 Oh, my God. We should go get some. So we are doing a Google trending skim, just looking down through what is trending right now on Google. And one of the things that's trending is the wildest fucking video I've seen in some time on reality television. Yeah. It's from Teen Mom. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:00:52 And Janelle, old Janelle, she's getting in a little road rage incident where apparently some dude was riding her back. She did a little brake check. Then this dude came around, brake checked her. Brake checked her hard yeah and then she like basically followed him back to his house really was calling the cops but the real point is they get there i think their cars must have had some kind of collision or whatever slightly she starts reaching down the side of her door and she pulls a fucking strap a fucking gun a burner right just out the fucking door thing,
Starting point is 01:01:25 tucks it next to her. Her son is sitting in the seat right next to her. Yeah, like a seven-year-old kid. Right. Tops. And he's like, I'd get my Nerf gun. Yeah, he was like, you want me to get my Nerf gun? I'll whip him.
Starting point is 01:01:35 That was like the most heartbreaking thing. I was just like, Jesus Christ. And the kid was like, oh, yeah, look, mom pulled the strap out. It was almost like the kid didn't even react. Right. And then I guess on the screen it's like, she then pulled out her firearm or whatever.
Starting point is 01:01:49 So, I mean, you know, cool. That's sort of what's going on with the teen mom world. And then didn't the cops show up and were so chill about it? Yeah. They were like, ma'am, I see you have a gun.
Starting point is 01:02:01 Right. I see you're white. But you need to go home. You need to get out of here. Yep. Yeah. Here, just let me look at that. Oh, that's a cool gun.
Starting point is 01:02:06 Okay, cool. Well, what state is this in? Do we know? I think North Carolina. Yeah. Is that an open carry state? I mean, they must have very friendly. It's got to be, right?
Starting point is 01:02:15 Yeah, or at least concealed carry. Yeah. Easy for concealed carry. How did the 911 operator, when she called 911 on someone who was driving in front of her, not just be like, okay, so what you're going to want to do is pull over to the side of the road, let them drive the fuck off, and problem solved. She's like, what you want to do is get right behind his back wheel, and what you're going to do is a pit maneuver.
Starting point is 01:02:35 You're going to hit his back wheel. He's going to spin out. That's when you hop out with the strap and fucking tell him to run his shit. I don't know. Yeah. I mean, honestly, I feel terrible i feel terrible though too because janelle like on that show i've stopped watching after maybe the first the second season whenever kiefer when she was with kiefer uh but that kiefer was her boyfriend i'm just saying like your mom uh
Starting point is 01:02:56 like it's been a tumultuous life for this person i'm like oh man like the fact that you're even putting shorty at risk like that that by drawing a gun on somebody. Anyway. And your kid. This is America. Yeah. Yeah. Something that was trending yesterday is R. Kelly.
Starting point is 01:03:16 And it's because he released a 19-minute long track, which somebody on Twitter, who I will find and shout out said which is surprising because he doesn't like to go over 18 that's a good joke and I will shout her out soon but yeah the song is called I Admit and it is his sort of attempt to bear
Starting point is 01:03:40 his artistic soul and you know admit some bad things that have happened to him and also that he's done, sort of mix those up. And here, we're going to play a couple clips. Yeah, this is one part. He addresses so many things, but this one has specifically to do with the accusations about him being with minors.
Starting point is 01:04:00 I admit I fuck with all the ladies That's both older and young ladies But tell me how they call it pedophile Because of that shit that's crazy You may have your opinions Entitled to your opinions But really am I supposed to go to jail Or lose my career because your opinion So I'm pretty sure
Starting point is 01:04:24 In your opinion, what is defined as a pedophile i think some an adult who uh has sexual relations or is sexually attracted to children or minors right but that's just like your opinion man no no no no i think uh this definition has been around so long i think there was a latin word for it right uh like this isn't a fucking this isn't like saying like what's the definition of trill right you're like no no no no my man this has been something in a vacuum yeah he's right he shouldn't go to jail for my opinions but he should he could go to jail for his actions yes that's a am i supposed to go to jail for my actions yes right yes it's not our opinion right it's not an opinion
Starting point is 01:05:06 well that's just the police's opinion like it's like essentially what you're saying like my honor that's your opinion you know what i mean it's like you're not gonna say that in court he uh he married alia yeah i think a fucking national treasure alia who sang who secretly sang the vocals for I'm Real and Jennifer Lopez got credit oh really yeah that's a big
Starting point is 01:05:30 oh really so he met her when she was 14 and married her when she was 15 yeah he was an adult human male
Starting point is 01:05:40 and in my opinion and also in the opinion of the you know laws of this nation or of whatever state it could have possibly happened in that is illegal that makes you a pedophile yeah and not to mention he has women basically imprisoned right like his quote-unquote sex cult yeah and then he's talking about like man all these conspiracies is crazy yeah and then but the the whole song is all over the place i mean he just sort of kinds of be like look i'm a gift and a curse he's like i've done a lot of bad stuff you know i've gotten with like best friends of
Starting point is 01:06:15 women that i was dating but then oh yeah but like phrases it like yeah i hit that in the bends or whatever and you're like okay you're not apologizing. You're just calling out that you're trying to brag about being a shitty dude. Real quick, I need to let everybody know it's Ashanti. Oh, okay. Who sang the I'm Real vocals. That makes sense. It's murdering. Sorry.
Starting point is 01:06:34 Sorry about that, everybody. But I bet there's a lot of people who feel better right now because I corrected it. Yeah, people are just screaming. It's Ashanti. Sorry to sidetrack. Just didn't want to make those people lose it at me. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Didn't he also say he couldn't read the prompter
Starting point is 01:06:47 Yeah at the Grammys he always talked about how he's basically functionally illiterate Cause he didn't go to school Everything is a conspiracy Then he's just sort of like Basically sort of being like Come on man so I did some shit and then you're just gonna abandon me Right It's like yes man you're fucking up
Starting point is 01:07:04 Like you're a fucking criminal. And he said he was abused too, right? Yeah, he said he was abused as a case. Someone touched him until he was 14 or something. That's fucking terrible. Yeah. Horrible. That's horrible.
Starting point is 01:07:14 I think, again, this is, it's sort of, it's one of those tone deaf weird apologies that we've seen in this Me Too era where someone was like, there's some people do like a half ass thing where it's like, yeah, I've been, I've been not a great guy. And so, uh, you know, what can I do? Right. But that's it. So you guys really going to abandon me? I'm learning from this and I'm going to put all of this time towards taking Trump down. Right. That was Weinstein's email. Right. Right. Right. Sent the day after all the allegations.
Starting point is 01:07:47 Yeah. We've talked before about how predators, their entire personality, their entire being is built around building up these tools of being charming. Miles, you were saying that you think he built his voice sort of almost like a- Yes, like a Venus flytrap. I think he will built his voice sort of almost like a- Yes, like a Venus flytrap.
Starting point is 01:08:06 I think he willed his voice. When you read about how predatory his behavior is, he was like, this is the thing, this is the lure, is my vocal talent. And then all these women who end up not talking to their families and living in this weird house that he has, they all start off as young singers
Starting point is 01:08:22 who he meets the parents, and he's like, yeah, I'm going to look after her career. Let me blah, blah, blah. Scientology. Yeah. It's just sort of, yeah. Not to those levels. No, but neutral.
Starting point is 01:08:32 Come in here. We'll guide you. Yeah, but at least to the parents, he neutralizes any sort of suspicion they have by just being like, oh. Think about how charming he must be to get parents to be like, yeah, you can have my daughter live with you. Yeah, in this year. Or even in the last 15 years. Yeah, after you've married. Aren't you the guy from that porn tape who was peeing on a young woman?
Starting point is 01:08:54 R. Kelly is officially... I'm going to say this because I really can't think of a better way to put it, not to make light of it, but he's officially cancelled. Like, he's not going to be... There's no way he's in the new Space Jam soundtrack. Right. Right?
Starting point is 01:09:09 You never know. I know. That's what I'm saying. But are we officially there that you're like, yeah, well, he's obviously not going to be. Well, that's why a lot of people, especially in the black community, this discussion about what do we do about R. Kelly? Because to even say, like, yo, this guy, you know, let him rock. Like, let's leave him alone is like yo we're not looking out for these women of color that he is abusing and that he is a
Starting point is 01:09:30 straight-up predator and to give him a pass is saying oh here's another time we're gonna just overlook the suffering of these women you know that's what spotify tried to do when they're like yo this guy's a fucking abuser like we're taking him out of our algorithms or whatever and then the industry came back and we're like yo don't do that really yeah like there was pressure for artists like him or triple x because he's never been convicted or has he been convicted he has not been okay yeah you know he pled out that one thing which i think he sings about in that right exactly so i don't know yeah i mean that's and that's the thing. To me, he is. You know, I've had some fire AKAs that were R. Kelly themed AKAs
Starting point is 01:10:09 that pains me to throw them on the trash heap, but I'm like, yo, this guy's a fucking villain. And we have to look at some people now and just be like, yo, this guy was evil. He is evil. And whether or not he was damaged himself does not absolve any damage he's done to other people. No.
Starting point is 01:10:26 And again, don't struggle with, what do I do with all these records? I can't listen to them anymore. Think about what the artists we're trying to support are and the kind of behavior we're going to reward with our attention or our money. Also, one of his best albums is called Chocolate Factory. That's just fucked up. Also, like you said earlier, Miles, if somebody put that on a personal level. know also one of his best albums is called chocolate factory that's just fucked up also like you said earlier miles if somebody put that on a personal level like if your sister right was harmed by him would you be wondering what to do with i will fuck him up yeah but would you be
Starting point is 01:10:56 wondering what to do with these records so that was somebody's sister i had somebody say to me once they're like when the louis thing broke and they were like, yeah, but he jacked off in front of this girl like 10 years ago. Right. Like, that's a long time for people to be so upset about. And I said to the guy, I go, let me just ask you a question. You have a daughter, right? Let's say she's 18 years old, and I jerk off in front of her. Like, I get her in a room, and I have her watch me.
Starting point is 01:11:22 And I go, you don't hear about it until she's 28. Right. And then you come to me and you're like, dude, you masturbated in front of my daughter. And my response is, you really care about something 10 years ago? Right. I go, is that going to be enough for you? Would you be like, all right, yeah, you're right. It has been.
Starting point is 01:11:38 All right, bro. Pound it out. No, you'd be like, fuck 10 years. You did that to somebody I care about? I don't care but for some reason we almost need to pointedly
Starting point is 01:11:49 have someone put it into a personal scenario for their life before they have compassion empathy sympathy
Starting point is 01:11:56 or understanding and why why we have to like go this big loop to get back to a place where you're like oh yeah I guess it isn't that hard
Starting point is 01:12:04 to throw away these records because if that happened to someone i care about i wouldn't debate this at all like yeah why do we have to go this long way for to make anybody and i'm not saying i'm perfect either there's times where i have to be like wait if this was me how would i feel but it's that simple is it hard for me i believe these people is it hard for me to throw those away shouldn't be really well i think it's a sort of self-preservation too it's like you feel like oh but i really like that does that make me bad because i like it no like you didn't know either right but i'm saying that's the kind of shit i think that goes through people's head and that's why a lot of people who are like especially after kanye stuff which
Starting point is 01:12:34 doesn't even compare to r kelly there are a lot of people doing all the gymnastics we're like well you know i don't know what does that say about me it's hard to fucking look at your heroes or people who you really like and be like oh that guy's a fucking piece of shit right it's hard to fucking look at your heroes or people who you really like and be like, ooh, that guy's a fucking piece of shit. Right. It's tough because you go for stretches of your life being like, that's cool. I like this. This is good. And to know that you were sort of cosigning it with your attention or fandom,
Starting point is 01:12:55 that makes people feel gross. Yeah, but you're not culpable. Dan, are you a video game player? Mm-hmm. Do you play Fortnite? Yeah. Okay. I won one time. Really? It's hard. Yeah. It can be hard out Yeah. I won one time. Really?
Starting point is 01:13:06 It's hard. Yeah. It can be hard out here. I won one, and it was literally... That's still impressive. A lot of people don't win one time. They had introduced this new gun. It was like a Tommy gun. First of all, literally, this game, I'm not... When you say play, I almost made a joke because 95%
Starting point is 01:13:22 of me playing that game is just seeing how long I can live. Right. Like, I'm literally, it's fun to me to be like, oh, I'm going to try and sneak through this and make it to the thing, and then I'll hide there. And so, you know, like, just because of that, sometimes I'll, like, get top 10 just because I'm not engaging.
Starting point is 01:13:36 But one time I had one game where I was like, I just want to see if this gun's any good. I got to go somewhere anyway. Like, I'll just engage with every person I see. I killed, like, eight. Killed. I don't even like that. I eliminated. I bested. I eliminated i eliminated like eight people and somehow won i guarantee the person i probably beat was just as bad as i am i just happen to work out that way
Starting point is 01:13:53 right but yeah i i enjoy the game a lot it's a good time killer and i do enjoy that feeling of like how long can i survive before i'm eliminated so i'm not even playing to win i'm just trying to see how so it's like late stage capitalism. Yeah, exactly. I think Kyle Aris made the joke. He's like, Fortnite is just like high school. I'm in the woods by myself eating mushrooms. At Kyle Aris. So Fortnite is trending again on Google, just as it always is, basically. Apparently, there are birthday challenges,
Starting point is 01:14:28 which are little Easter eggs that they've dropped in or little mini games that they've dropped in to Fortnite that everybody's Googling to see how to complete or whatever. But one thing I didn't realize, so there was this really stupid goal celebration during the World Cup where the guy ran to the side and it looked like he made a unicorn horn on his head and then like started like he was doing the l dance from fortnight antoine greaseman this is the dance yeah it's like one of the emotes oh okay see i've never spent any money on it i i i i really don't think i even know how to play like i don't understand
Starting point is 01:15:01 all bro you're not throwing your money away into the fucking pit that is fortnite it's just fun yeah yeah yeah but yeah so yeah he was doing that like it was greaseman i think uh jesse lingard also did the shoot dance the hype dance the hype emote from uh fortnite when he scored in the world cup there have been a lot of players like especially in in soccer in the like the last year who have been doing a a lot of Fortnite emotes as goal celebrations. Do you think that's just because it's culturally influential, or do you think there is some sort of branded thing that's tied into it? No. No, it's not branded.
Starting point is 01:15:39 I think they're playing all the time. Yeah, they're fans, and they're like, yo, I'm going to do the thing from Fortnite when I score now. Like I would if I just sort of cap somebody in the game, like, oh, here, take that L. Now I'm just doing... Is that what you're supposed to do
Starting point is 01:15:51 every time after you eliminate somebody? No, I mean, it's an emote, however you want to use it. Oh, okay. But this, so it's... Yeah, now it's... Like the gaming industry, I think, has become very aware
Starting point is 01:16:01 because I've been hearing, you know, that other game companies realize like after seeing how Fortnite is like just like naturally permeating in the brain, the consciousness of like these athletes and like giving fucking free marketing in the biggest sporting event on earth in the world cup. Not that everyone was like, wait, what is that?
Starting point is 01:16:19 Is that Fortnite? I'm going to get it. But still that sort of level of brand visibility, like there are other people now to realize like, Oh shit, like do we need to like get an athletes like to get it. But still, that sort of level of brand visibility. There are other people now, too, realize, oh, shit, do we need to get in athletes to get them to start being these informal ambassadors for the game? Right. So that's a thing that's happening is they're like, could you do our emote when you're celebrating a three-pointer?
Starting point is 01:16:40 Yeah, or at the very least be like, hey, will you come on the stream or whatever? Because remember when Drake was playing? That was the thing. I told people, I'm'm like what ashton kutcher did for twitter remember that i mean he was like the face of it for six seven eight months uh and i think it wasn't the first with a million followers and became like a big deal right drake playing with ninja was a huge thing for fortnite enormous yeah and then uh i think a lot of baseball player i know the brewers did a thing uh here let's give a little uh happier brewer news uh the brewers did a thing where they had like up on their jumbo screen they had a couple players like playing fortnight in the
Starting point is 01:17:15 stadium oh shit yeah yeah that was earlier this summer that's amazing yeah uh all right taking over well jack get in man it's not too late bro yeah i think in, man. It's not too late, bro. Yeah, I think it is. I think it's clearly too late. Come on, do the floss dance. Dan, it's always a pleasure to have you, man. I love being here. Where can people find you, and when can they see you? You can check out my new podcast, Pen Pals, with Rory Scovel.
Starting point is 01:17:41 Oh, shit. Yeah, we just launched our third episode. We'll drop tomorrow, Wednesday the 25th. We say it's your podcast. We just talk about it because anyone can send us any DM or letter or email, and we read it online. And whatever you talk about is what we're going to talk about. It's not necessarily advice.
Starting point is 01:18:02 Like, just how's your life going? How's the soybeans and the corn? Let us know. And that's called pen pals with uh daniel van kirk and rory scoville and then obviously as you mentioned um hindsight uh some pretty good guests i've had on that show as a matter of fact two of us um both of us i know go listen if you guys are new it's so good and hear a lot about my sordid past. Comedians, writers, directors, creators, artists, great personalities come on the show. They bring three photos from any chapter of their life. And we just talk about the context of their life when that photo was taken. Miles, you had some fire ones.
Starting point is 01:18:36 Wasn't there Christina Aguilera? Yeah, there's some old drop-in on one of those. Christina Aguilera, Entourage. Yeah, both of you guys were great. And then Dumb People Town, which I host with the Sklar brothers. It's just three dumb news stories and a fourth, sometimes even fifth, guest. And we just goof around and talk about how the world is getting dumber and we're trying to fight back with jokes. There you go.
Starting point is 01:18:55 Yeah. And something that's new that I should have told you ahead of right now is that we've been asking our guests if there's a tweet they've been enjoying yes okay I do have one this was this week it blew up so big I'd be surprised if you guys like I said I've been out of the loop with comic-con I'd be surprised if you didn't already talk about it but I retweeted this whenever I see something great on Twitter I'll like it and I'll retweet it and I say the same thing every time. If it's just something that's good or nice or contributes positivity to the world, I write, there are still beautiful
Starting point is 01:19:30 things happening in this world. That's my quote tweet of it. And there's one with the boy playing fetch with a dog over a fence. Oh, yeah. It's just beautiful. It's just, it's summertime. It's a little kid. He throws a ball. The dog gets it, runs back over, drops it over the side of the fence.
Starting point is 01:19:46 And they probably did this for a day. And I love that tweet. I love stuff like that where you're like, there's just nothing but good here. It's pure. Yeah. Yeah. So people can check that out on my timeline. They just did an expose. That dog, his Twitter, he does a lot of alt-right stuff on his Twitter.
Starting point is 01:20:00 That poor dog. Do I need to throw away my commemorative leashes? twitter that poor dog what do i need to throw away no my commemorative leases uh miles where can people find you oh what's the tweet you've been enjoying okay so you find me on twitter and instagram at miles of gray and a tweet i was liking uh was alexis ohanian was he's it's a picture of him and serena Williams like in Venice like just laughing it up and it says she wanted Italian for dinner so like as if he was just like fuck I'm going to Venice
Starting point is 01:20:30 and then at you chlomb I don't know who this user is retweeted it with a caption just said hope women see what happens when you know what you want to eat because my gosh this happens with men and women so I don't mean this to be a misogynistic thing at all
Starting point is 01:20:46 I don't know why this is still a fucking thing that people still cannot figure out especially couples and it's never the same thing unless it's now spiral mac and cheese you can't go wrong I know I was enjoying a tweet by
