Starting point is 00:02:01 Hello, the internet, and welcome to this episode of retrender the zeitons another one from fighter of the nightman yep which is a always sunny ref yeah there yeah look at you uh yeah i'm just uh you know encyclopedic knowledge yeah hanging with the gang well Well, I'm Jack. I'm the old one. And that there, well, that is Miles. The less old one. The less old one.
Starting point is 00:02:32 Anyways, some things that are trending, some horrifying shit in New York this morning. There's a shooting in Brooklyn in Sunset Park on the subway. Brooklyn and Sunset Park on the subway. The NYPD really dropping the fuck out of the ball on this one. My God. I mean, Alec Karakatsanis
Starting point is 00:02:57 who's been on the show, he just did a whole thread on Twitter. He's like, check out the copaganda on the New York Times already as a result of this and i think yeah this is this is based on like the all the write-ups and twitter and shit you can tell that this is just sparked a whole other conversation of y'all have an basically an 11 billion dollar budget which would be considered in the top 10 of, if it was a military, the top 10 most well-funded militaries on the planet, and what's happening with crime. I think the broader question is,
Starting point is 00:03:34 how do you spend the eighth largest army's worth of money in a year and you have crime just in general does not go down. In fact, fact it goes up and then the solution that seems to be constantly paraded out which is oh well we just need more cops um people are already saying that at any given time there could be 3 500 nypd uh officers in the subways like that's just part of their the division of manpower and we're i don't know i mean like that's why this is such a like it just intersects with so many issues we're having whether it's guns or fucking you know the police budgets or even eric adams who i'm sure would have loved to have been there but i think he recently had covid so he can't go out in public yet um yeah yeah and police are still searching for the suspect. Yeah. And local schools have activated a shelter-in-place order.
Starting point is 00:04:28 So just a real nightmare that spending a large nation's military budget on police is not assuaging. Yeah. assuaging yeah i don't yeah also it seems it seems like one of those things that should shouldn't be easy to escape a mass shooting to perpetuate in you know when you talk about it like new york they brag a lot they're like our cctv camera now works only second to fucking london and you're like holy shit okay so that shit's locked down on video um and i'm sure you know whatever they'll find them but again like this is why i think uh karakatsanis was you know pointing this out that i think if people had the airtime or the platform to say this incident right now needs to actually begin a larger discussion of what it what public safety is and how we achieve that. Because throwing all this money at it does not seem to be working at all.
Starting point is 00:05:29 So, you know, we shall see. Ah, and Trisha, Super Producer Trisha, saying that some of the security cameras in the subway station were down. Huh. Ah. What are they spending that money on? I don't know, dude. Sick-ass windbreakers that say NYPD on it.
Starting point is 00:05:46 Yeah. Stranger Things is trending because a new trailer is out for season four. Everybody's too old to make sense anymore. Although they're doing good. Like, I didn't look at the trailer and be like, yo, what are all these middle-aged... It's not like Dawson's Creek, where it's like...
Starting point is 00:06:07 That person has a five o'clock shadow. Right, right. Exactly. Like, damn, Finn Wolfhard looks like he's kicking heroin between his hands. What the fuck happened to him? Looking all gaunt and shit. I've only seen the first season.
Starting point is 00:06:23 Did you like it? Yeah, I liked it. I thought it was like a fun homage. I did not feel like there was enough there that was like, oh, I want to see what they do with the rest of this because it just felt like it was like, oh yeah, I've seen E.T. Like E.T. is dope.
Starting point is 00:06:40 And y'all have seen E.T. and you played in that sandbox. Right. E.T. is just this shaved-headed australian little girl now i see that's what it is now but yeah that's and you know i watched i've watched all the seasons and they each season kind of has its own tone to it and i like you know the last one was all like you know mall centric and like them and their burgeoning romantic relationships and shit like that and whatever it was cool i was like
Starting point is 00:07:06 not my favorite of the three this trailer i'm i'm not i don't want to say i'm not giving a fuck about it but i didn't get really hooked like i i i was saying more snarky shit to myself watching it than when i was being like, oh, shit, that was cool. Oh, okay. Yeah. And you were fucking cracking up when you were saying that shit to yourself. It was kind of wild to see. You were just sitting there watching, saying a snarky thing, and then just rolling. I'm like, this dude playing a guitar in the Upside Down.
Starting point is 00:07:38 For what? For what? I really need to know. for what i really need to know so the aesthetic of the first one would be like spielberg suburban like uh wilderness type shit what what was uh three was like sort of 80s mall culture what was number what was two um how would i sum up the second season it was like a summary right wasn't that like a thing yeah yeah yeah it's like it's more just like seeing them now grow up a little bit more that was like because they were you know we went from kids season one to two they're like yeah look at these little you know these like more like a teen movie yeah three you're like okay then some teenagers four were
Starting point is 00:08:22 like freshmen in high school um but all that to say is like i'm just it seems like they're doing a lot is happening in this trailer and that's what kind of worries me but not to say that it has to be so minimal or whatever but there are like so many tropes that like i was visually seeing in this thing i'm like wow y'all are okay maybe every episode it's like a weird little movie. Yeah, I got 80s metal video vibes from this one. I mean, there was a fucking guy doing
Starting point is 00:08:51 a tap solo on an electric guitar. Doing the Slash from November Rain solo, but in the upside down. Yeah. There's some White Walker looking dude like night
Starting point is 00:09:06 king figure so whatever cool um i think it'll what'll probably inevitably happen is it comes out i wait to see what everybody on the internet says and then like four weeks later i'll be like super bored and i'll be like fuck it let me Let me just throw this on. Yeah. Speaking of waiting to see what everyone on the internet says, uh, everything, everywhere, all at once, still haven't seen it,
Starting point is 00:09:30 but I'm, I'm going to try and see that shit in the next week. But like, that is, I, that's the most like effusively praised, uh, like movie that's,
Starting point is 00:09:38 that's hit in a while. Northman, the, I don't know anyone who's seen it yet, but some critics have seen it and that's getting a lot of praise. Pachinko is a new Apple TV series based on a novel my wife just read about Korean history and culture,
Starting point is 00:09:58 and that's supposed to be very good. And specifically Korean discrimination in Japan. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. And then Severance, everyone says Severance is really good. to be very good and specifically like korean discrimination in japan yeah yeah yeah yeah um and then severance everyone says severance is really good like suddenly apple tv supposed to be really good became like the new fucking hbo max or some shit out of nowhere i think they just probably had to figure out their development like schedule or whatever here but um i'm like fuck man i heard from people who were working on a show early for them that they were very that apple was like real hard to work with yeah yeah exactly no
Starting point is 00:10:33 uh they're every person i think and those like that first set of shows that they had announced like constant butting of heads because you had a con uh basically a product manufacturer getting into content and like the reconciliation process of you know um notes i think was probably a bit of a headache but yeah look at them now look at them now look at them love to see apple winning you know what i mean finally you know they needed a they needed a dub they needed something since that ipod yeah um and also you know gilbert godfrey is trending because he passed uh too young age of 67 after a long-term illness um but you know comedy legend voice acting legend yeah the only celebrity when i lived in missouri for three years the only celebrity I saw while I lived there
Starting point is 00:11:26 so he was out here you know touring getting his paper but yeah supposedly just a super nice guy so shout out to his family
Starting point is 00:11:42 wasn't he Zazu in Aladdin no Yago right or Y. Wasn't he Zazu in Aladdin? No, Yago, right? Or Yago. Which one's Zazu? I don't know, man. I think you just made those syllables up. Zazu feels like Lion King.
Starting point is 00:11:58 Just leave me to rot here to my old age. Alright, let's take a quick break. We'll be right back. I'm Jess Casavetto, executive producer of the hit Netflix documentary series, Dancing for the Devil, the 7M TikTok cult. And I'm Clea Gray, former member of 7M Films and Shekinah Church. And we're the host of the new podcast, Forgive Me For I Have Followed. Together, we'll be diving even deeper into the unbelievable stories
Starting point is 00:12:29 behind 7M Films and LA-based Shekinah Church, an alleged cult that has impacted members for over two decades. Jessica and I will delve into the hidden truths between high control groups and interview dancers, church members, and others whose lives and careers have been impacted, just like mine. Through powerful, in-depth and others whose lives and careers have been impacted, just like mine. Through powerful, in-depth interviews with former members and new, chilling firsthand accounts, the series will illuminate untold and extremely necessary perspectives. Forgive Me For I Have Followed will be more than an exploration. It's a vital revelation aimed at ensuring these types of abuses never happen again. Listen to Forgive Me For I Have Followed on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:13:11 This summer, the nation watched as the Republican nominee for president was the target of two assassination attempts, separated by two months. These events were mirrored nearly 50 years ago when President Gerald Ford faced two attempts on his life in less than three weeks. President Gerald R. Ford came stunningly close to being the victim of an assassin today. And these are the only two times we know of that a woman has tried to assassinate a U.S. president. One was the protege of infamous cult leader Charles Manson. I always felt like Lynette was kind of his right-hand woman.
Starting point is 00:13:47 The other, a middle-aged housewife working undercover for the FBI in a violent revolutionary underground. Identified by police as Sarah Jean Moore. The story of one strange and violent summer. This is Rip Current. Available now with new episodes every Thursday. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I've been thinking about you.
Starting point is 00:14:13 I want you back in my life. It's too late for that. I have a proposal for you. Come up here and document my project. All you need to do is record everything like you always do. One session, 24 hours. BPM 110, 120. She's terrified.
Starting point is 00:14:32 Should we wake her up? Absolutely not. What was that? You didn't figure it out? I think I need to hear you say it. That was live audio of a woman's nightmare. This machine is approved and everything? You're allowed to be doing this?
Starting point is 00:14:48 We passed the review board a year ago. We're not hurting people. There's nothing dangerous about what you're doing. They're just dreams. Dream Sequence is a new horror thriller from Blumhouse Television, iHeartRadio, and Realm. Listen to Dream Sequence on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. In a galaxy far, far away.
Starting point is 00:15:15 No, babe, that's taken. We're in our own world, remember? Right, in our own world. We're two space cadets. And totally normal humans. Sure, totally normal humans. Embark on a journey across the stars, discovering the wonders of the universe one episode at a time. We'll talk about life, love, laughter, and why you should never argue with your co-pilot.
Starting point is 00:15:37 Especially when she's always right. Right. And if we hit turbulence, just blame it on Mercury retrograde. Or Emily's questionable space piloting skills. Hey, join us on In Our Own World for cosmic conversations, stellar laughs, and super corny dad jokes. Listen to In Our Own World as a part of the My Cultura podcast network available on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. And don't worry, we promise to avoid any black holes most of the time and we're back britney griner is still in russia wmba has been doing what they can but say the
Starting point is 00:16:21 situation is very difficult yeah they, because the draft just happened. The commissioner of the league made a point to say we're really trying to get Brittany Griner out of there. We've yet to see. I think a lot of people are concerned that her detention would
Starting point is 00:16:39 possibly use as some kind of leverage negotiating piece at some point point or maybe that it maybe that's happening now who knows um but yeah still in russia because they said she had vape cartridges and could potentially look at a 10-year sentence um if they you know if she's found quote-unquote guilty or whatever the fuck is going on over there jesus yeah it's i mean it's awful i mean like it's i can't even imagine you any other time right you're like man fuck it i'm too visible uh like this seems like something who knows what the fuck actually happened here but i feel like you know potentially the government can figure out a way to get me out of here um but yeah now with like
Starting point is 00:17:22 basically so many diplomatic channels closed uh it seems like people are trying to do what they can like with their own networks to see what can happen but we'll see i i haven't really followed her wmba career but um damn she's she's really fucking good yeah her stats are crazy oh yeah yeah i mean i knew she could like dunk and like i remember her baylor uh years but yeah damn putting up uh 20 points a game shooting 85 from the stripe nine boards anyways which puts you i mean which also brings up the point right is why does she need to have the need financially to go play abroad right you know that is wild it's because she's only in russia because they you know you can make a lot more money playing
Starting point is 00:18:11 abroad and i get that the wmba is like you know obviously they'd have more money if more advertisers were supporting the league and things like that but there has to be a you know like that that's part of the equation is that like for how talented these people are, they're still, I feel like they can still earn a lot more based on what their worth is, especially when you compare that to the men in the NBA. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:36 Almost like they should, you know, help the WNBA a little bit more. Huh. Huh. Huh. Anyways, if only they were associated with a major corporation that could i don't know anyways be real yeah um the new app that we're all buzzing about uh you watching it you heard of it no i think i've seen like ads for it it's okay i a few people have written up this app now because it's a social media platform
Starting point is 00:19:06 that's trying to they're emphasizing the real okay i want you to be real it's not some cypress hill offshoot uh app this is just about you know being your authentic self because the makers of it are like everything's so sanitized and when you're posting like when you're ready it's just you're you're showing very much a like not a spontaneous version of yourself and so the way the app works is basically like you can only uh post when the app uh prompts you to say okay you got two minutes to post whatever you're doing right now like take your like let us know what you're doing right now like post that yeah yeah okay just to kind of give people more of an idea it's like yeah man i'm fucking not in
Starting point is 00:19:45 barbados you know like uh riding a turtle through the fucking crystal clear water like yeah i'm at fucking work yes i'm sitting at my desk working i'm playing with my pets or whatever and like you know that's their hope i think the knock the effect of it is like they're not the most stimulating or uh visually stunning pictures but i like that there's like the pressures there's not really pressure to be like oh how many likes you're gonna get more than me like hey where you at right now what you doing right right but yeah um enough people will use it yeah i mean that's like a cool sociological experiment yeah um that's why i don't i don't see i don't see that this thing
Starting point is 00:20:27 blowing up but i just like that there's a like hopefully like i'm sure there's a movement of people who are trying to be like how can we get people to like interact with each other but like take out the like ego emphasis of it all and just get people to sort of see each other in a more normal way and not cause people anxiety from looking at someone's manicured life. Yeah. So like as a consumer, I'm not sure I want to necessarily see that. I do want to see the overall results and be like, damn, Americans do work way too much. This is a great data gathering idea. But like nobody's gonna want to look at that right
Starting point is 00:21:08 well not with the yeah i mean i think because again the reason why i think i mean not the reason why i think it's clear why social media is is so popular is that because it feeds into like this like hey look at me shit and also connects you with people and like it has all that there but with something so visual and people being i probably concerned about what they look like or how they're presenting themselves on social media that that might not appeal to them um but you know again it's a uh it's a worthwhile endeavor to try and just be like hey man you just fuck it man you got work all day that's fucked yeah that sucks um hey man you always uh
Starting point is 00:21:46 you know like damn all right or you start like talking shit you're like dude every time they post they're on this couch like laying down and do you like what happens if you just ignore the prompt then you're not posting anything you skip your window okay yeah yeah i don't i don't like the idea of being involved with that that sounds stressful but that's uh well i mean for people like us who are obviously prolific on social media yeah i mean it's just like i'm already like i've tweeted five times since we started recording i know and you won't even look people don't know this when we record this episode jack doesn't look at me because he's on his phone posting all the time yeah yeah and i'm sure those eyes with me
Starting point is 00:22:25 like just fake laughing at different posts yeah like in uh waynes world too when harry shears the fucking dj uh-huh yep uh-huh okay yep and you would know that because you're a major your tool yep that's a good bit uh well we talked about some things that we want to watch uh but now we're talking something that we gotta watch it's called father stew um it's uh written and directed by Mel Gibson's significant other, who her name is Rosalyn Ross. And there's an interesting AV club profile of her where it opens with her just being like, yeah, I was surprised that he asked me to write the script in the first place.
Starting point is 00:23:24 And then I turned it in and he was like yo do you want to direct this and i was like what does that even mean um that she didn't say that but she was just like it was very unexpected wow don't you love to see that he'd been developing it with david o russell for uh like six years and then now was just like nah fuck it bro i can i can do this yeah um the story of a priest so mark walberg as we've talked about before on uh the show america's favorite catholic uh was uh tapped to uh mc the an appearance of the pope in philadelphia a city he is famously not associated with and it's not getting great reviews um but oh really well the review i read was like so if you've watched a lot of like christian movies that are like know, basically made not because they have a story to tell, but because they are trying to like get Christianity to expose the world to Christianity, the most underrepresented, underrated religion out there. know if you're familiar with those faith-based the faith-based genre you'll be like damn okay
Starting point is 00:24:46 but if uh you are not familiar with that and uh are coming in uh with the expectations that this is going to be a good movie um you'll probably be underwhelmed is the is the kind of impression i've gotten from the three reviews oh god i mean you know it's those those church films aren't great uh buddy of mine work i remember edited a church movie that jaw rule was in with adrian byline remember going to like the low like the premiere of that shit this was this shit was not a great movie. And so I get that the bar is a little bit different. But I feel like Catholic priests are just such compelling, interesting, relatable, sympathetic characters.
Starting point is 00:25:38 People aren't just lining up to see this, huh? They're like, what if there was one who was not a creep? I think is is the pro right premise of this is like you think like mark warbler's like we need a movie where the priests look cool man exactly like the big hit but with priests it's wild that you said ja rule because i had been singing i'm real in my head since we talked about be real and now now here we are back at Ja Rule. Look at us. That is our promise. That is our promise as a podcast.
Starting point is 00:26:10 We will always bring it back. Bring it back to rule. To rule. Rule, baby! Let's use his proper name, Jeffrey Atkins. Jeffrey Atkins Rule. Isn't that his name, I think?
Starting point is 00:26:26 Yeah. Yeah, that's what the Ja is for yep oh yeah right better jaw jaw morant morant or jaw rule yeah oh jaw rule baby i want to see i want to see look i got love for you john morant but if you don't go toe-to-toe with 50 Cent and get absolutely destroyed and then do a scam festival, then try and hawk crypto, I mean... Yeah, try harder, John Morant. We'll see how these playoffs go, I guess.
Starting point is 00:26:59 Yeah, yeah, yeah. But yeah, Ja Rule is like a pop culture cockroach. You know what I mean? That's true. Kind of impressive. Absolutely. I think because he also like, he was so popular at like the right time
Starting point is 00:27:12 for a bunch of people who are wealthy now that are like, dude, dude, your first fucking album, Vinny Vidi Vici, bro? That shit fucking, that shit was so sick, dude. Yeah, dude, I got this crypto startup man like
Starting point is 00:27:25 and we're thinking about doing like this like like fucking really exclusive club in new york dude you need a fucking card to get in and shit um i don't know just let me like if you're feeling it or not yeah just bradley cooper's character from wedding crashers man i i bought veni vidi I bought Vinny Vidi Vici in historic Jamestown. Wait, isn't that like where they only sell like hand-woven, hand-spun? Yes, dude. There was like, I'm pretty sure.
Starting point is 00:27:55 It's supposed to be a town that takes you back in time and then there was just some dude like hawking CDs? There was like, it's either a historic jamestown or another like so i remember like one of those colonial towns yeah we went to like a colonial town in eighth grade to be like wow look at how like we won't talk about slaves at this place
Starting point is 00:28:18 right just like check this check out how they lived in the 1800s. And there was like in this town, there was a music shop and Vinny Vidi Vici. Okay. His day or the album that had Holla on it just dropped. And me and my boy were like, yo, we gotta go get that shit right now. And we were like, we like snuck away because we saw this place was a music shop. Copped the CD. So. Wow.
Starting point is 00:28:44 I've paid my dues to the the temple of rule um well there it is vinny viddy vici um i don't know what that life pasta death isn't that i came i saw i conquered yeah that's what that's what it is. That sounds better. What is this? Pasta Gary Vee, the old physio from the Lakers and Avicii, the DJ. There it is. Alright, well that is
Starting point is 00:29:17 what is trending. Sort of what's trending. Also a lot of shit about Ja Rule. Yeah.
