Hi, I'm Akilah Hughes, and I'm so excited about my new podcast, Rebel Spirit, where I head back to my hometown in Kentucky and try to convince my high school to change their racist mascot, the rebels, into something everyone in the South loves, the biscuits. I was a lady rebel. Like, what does that even mean? It's right here in black and white in print. It's bigger than a flag or mascot.
Starting point is 00:00:55 Listen to Rebel Spirit on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. In California during the summer of 1975, within the span of 17 days and less than 90 miles, two women did something no other woman had done before, try to assassinate the president of the United States. One was the protege of Charles Manson. 26-year-old Lynette Fromm, nickname Squeaky. The other, a middle-aged housewife working undercover for the FBI. Identified by police as Sarah Jean Moore.

Join us on In Our Own World as we uncover hidden truths, navigate the depths of culture, identity, and the human spirit. With a hint of mischief.
Starting point is 00:02:01 One episode at a time. Buckle up and listen to In Our Own World on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Trust us, it's out of this world. Hello, the internet, and welcome to this episode of the Detroit Trend Wings. That is courtesy of K-Rog. I'm assuming K-Rog is a play on K-Rock. Or maybe it's K-Rodge because it's
Starting point is 00:02:26 ROG just fucking going out to hitting Steve Ziderman Steve Eiserman we're all Steve Eiserman fans the only thing I like more than hockey is gaming so I got that reference
Starting point is 00:02:42 so here are some things that are trending you're Miles. I'm Jack. Yeah. And here are some things that are trending. National Puppy Day is trending. And off just the top, we will get to what happened in Colorado in tomorrow's episode.
Starting point is 00:02:57 Yes, of course. Of course. We know that is trending right now, but it's... Needs a little more time. Focus on something a little bit different at the moment to give you some respite and that's what is national puppy day what does that mean like are we bringing awareness to the struggle of puppies everywhere is it to you get a free puppy some like i don't are we just acknowledging like puppies are lit? Yeah. I'm trying to bring attention to the cause of puppies being lit is my main thing.
Starting point is 00:03:30 You know what? Okay. You want to read what the, what it's all about? Observe each year on March 23rd, National Puppy Day celebrates the unconditional love and affection puppies bring to our lives. Their cuddles and wiggles make us smile. And without a doubt, there are squeals of delight when there are puppies around. The day also brings
Starting point is 00:03:47 awareness for the need for care of and homes for orphan pups as well. That's to educate people about the horrors of puppy mills across the country. Did that first part rhyme? It sounded like it was like a greeting card that rhymed. That's just my sing-songy voice I use when I
Starting point is 00:04:03 audition for greeting cards. It was really pretty. Shout out to Ace Biscuits, the number one pup of the Daily Trending podcast. Out here, living his best. Living his best. Are you going to get a puppy again? I feel like we always talk about this. The kids bring it up
Starting point is 00:04:20 every once in a while, but I'm going to wait until they're a little bit more responsible. Until i can trust what they're what they say a bunch of liars man about a double speed coming out of a three-year-old yeah man uh but yeah i think eventually yeah i know i feel like yeah whenever you have it like i didn't have a dog for a really long time and then i got one like a couple years ago and i thought longest i was like i don't need a dog i don't need it i had a dog for a really long time. I got one a couple years ago. The longest time, I was like, I don't need a dog. I had a dog. I know what that's like.
Starting point is 00:04:47 Then you have a dog. I like dog. I like pet. I like animal. I'm going to make it a goal to have a dog by next National Puppy Day so that I can celebrate in style. Meghan McCain is trending.
Starting point is 00:05:03 Speaking of in style, the stylish and fierce megan mccain trending because john oliver did he do was this like his uh main main story over the last week was plastics okay um either way he raised the fact that she had at the time of when trump was using anti-asian rhetoric and just racism uh in his attempt to deflect blame from his complete fucking up of the covid response she was like i don't see anything wrong with that that's totally fine with me so john oliver just pointed just showed that yeah just uh pull to this you and uh i like how there are times i feel like chuck schumer brought up her own dad to her and she's like nah he wouldn't have done that like it was such a there were like weird moments where she was like willfully trying to forget like what
Starting point is 00:06:01 her dad kind of did not to erase the fact that he's not a hero by any stretch as a politician but like just the i think that's the willful ignorance you have to engage in when you're like a political pundit because there's no way you can be and if you're consistent you probably wouldn't be a republican or you are then you're consistently racist so with her yeah she said at the time said i don't have a problem with people calling it whatever they want in regards to them calling it China virus or whatever the fuck other things were. And then, yeah, the tweet,
Starting point is 00:06:31 I condemn the reprehensible violence, dot, dot, dot. And there's no doubt his rhetoric fueled it. And I apologize for any past comments that aided that agenda. What are you going to do now? Don't just apologize for the comments. Now, what side do you want to be on?
Starting point is 00:06:43 You want to fight for what's right, or you just want to apologize that you got caught with your hand in the racist cookie jar? I want to be on the side that I'm not in trouble. Is that cool? Yeah, all right, fine. Just go over there. Oprah will be with you in a second.
Starting point is 00:06:57 Yeah. Kyrie Irving's name is trending because Stephen A posed the question, Kyrie or AI? Right, artificial. name is trending because uh stephen a posed the question kairi or ai right artificial and just overall could he duel an artificial intelligence right that knew how to play a game of chess oh yeah that or alan iverson i don't know yes alan iverson yeah very interesting question. His take is, yes, Kyrie is more skilled, a better scorer, but AI was dependable and could quite literally put a team on his back and drag them to the promised land no matter what,
Starting point is 00:07:36 therefore is a better player. That was his argument. He acknowledged the skill of Kyrie, but said there's this other part of AI that you also have to say is like an X factor that is kind of unique to him. Yeah. Allen Iverson is maybe the best athlete
Starting point is 00:07:53 in the history of the NBA. Well, Charlie Ward did win a Heisman. Yeah, but Iverson could have if he wanted to. If you've seen those videos of him throwing throwing footballs uh he was he was a lights out quarterback passes yeah he's like watch this hail mary to me um kairi they're both like singular people who like I've never,
Starting point is 00:08:28 when I watch them, I've never seen anybody who can do the things that they do. Kyrie in terms of shot making and AI in terms of just like all out athleticism and motor and quickness. But yeah, it's an interesting conversation. My opinion on it, I'm going to withhold because I don't ever want to be on the record as agreeing with Stephen A. Smith. Sure.
Starting point is 00:08:49 I just think it's more than that. I'll zoom out and say, I don't think we should even compare the two. It's different times. You know what I mean? But as a washed person, it's AI all day, baby. In terms of his influence on the culture. Yeah, 100%.
Starting point is 00:09:04 But just like Stephen A. Smith, you can't deny Kyrie. Kyrie is just fucking ridiculous also. So we'll see. I mean, you know, AI, why don't you chime in? Also, the other thing is too, AI was done so dirty at the end of his last few seasons.
Starting point is 00:09:19 The refs really gave him a fucked up time and I think helped facilitate his own downfall that he definitely had a hand in. But there are other elements about AI. I could just be an AI apologist. Yeah, for sure. Shout out to the Georgetown Hoyas.
Starting point is 00:09:38 Shrimp tails are trending. Yeah, I mean, do I have to explain why? Shrimp tails. Woo! Jensen Karp used to have a very good podcast called Get Up On This. He had a tweet that ended up in the trending section on Twitter because he took a picture of Cinnamon Toast Crunch and there were very cinnamon and sugar coated shrimp tails and he was like hey cinnamon toast crunch why are there shrimp tails in my cinnamon toast crunch and that
Starting point is 00:10:15 that just became a meme somebody else posted a picture in response of a bag of cinnamon toast crunch where uh the bag appeared to be like taped up and there was dental floss uh that was also coated with cinnamon and sugar i don't that that one seems very easy to fake i feel like shrimp tails uh you you wouldn't fake it's just like so random yeah and also like the when you look at it, like, there's, like, shit baked into the cereal. And then he started retweeting other people's ideas of what they thought it was. And someone who's, like, dealt with rats was like, that's rat shit and the tails and the string. That's because they brought their collection with them somewhere.
Starting point is 00:11:01 And they maybe caught up in a bag of dry mix that eventually was made into cereal they're like but that's a rat uh that's a rat you know just fucking storage unit in your fucking bag and he was like this one seems like the most feasible and i just don't like the idea that i was just eating a rat storage locker um a cereal but you know whatever i i do typically like cinnamon toast crunch i will say there's sometimes when it tastes dirty to me and that's a weird thing but there's just like a taste of it that it's like and maybe that's just like the cinnamon hitting hitting my brain in a weird way but i've i've had that experience where i'm like this could have been left out in a you know dumpster overnight and i wouldn't really know the difference there's just such
Starting point is 00:11:53 overwhelming sweetness after that after that first initial impression that just goes goes away you know teach their own yeah that's one where i saw people tweeting about shrimp tails and didn't bother looking it up until just before this episode uh another one that i saw people tweeting about is just a format r.i.p famous deceased celebrity it's a shame you never got to piece of modern culture i think they would have loved it and i assumed it had some reason for existing like maybe a famous person had tweeted something silly like that but it just comes from a silly tweet from a cashew fan uh who i think i think we've called out before as being funny uh they just tweeted r.i.p princess diana it's a shame she never got to play total war warhammer 2 i think she would have loved it
Starting point is 00:12:46 and that just took off that just people and not even like that tweet didn't take off in the sense that it got like thousands of retweets it just uh passed around like a like memes used to just from one brain to another i mean and yeah 20 years the warhammer 2 came out 20 years after her passing so yeah it wasn't as if it was just she missed it by a couple weeks but man she would have loved that shit you can tell you can just tell like those interviews yeah she loves real times tactics like strategy games that's like her whole thing, dude. Especially the ones like Warhammer Classic from Sega. That's why I said Di was always a Sega
Starting point is 00:13:29 person. She was original when it said Sega! Remember that? That was Princess Di, yeah. Look what this meme form has us doing now. Laughing at other mothers. Charles is the original It's-a-me! It's very problematic. and Charles Charles is the original it's a me
Starting point is 00:13:45 that's very problematic fortunately it is him who started it and therefore alright that is what is trending right now we are back tomorrow with a whole ass episode of the show
Starting point is 00:14:02 until then be kind to each other be kind to yourselves don. Be kind to yourselves. Don't do nothing about white supremacy. And we'll talk to y'all tomorrow. Bye. Kay hasn't heard from her sister in seven years. I have a proposal for you. Come up here and document my project.
