Starting point is 00:02:21 Dirt Daily Zeitgeist! It's a production of iHeartRadio still, but this is a podcast where we're taking a deep dive into America's shared consciousness back in the years 2014 and 2015. And we're saying officially off the top, fuck the Koch brothers, fuck Fox News. My name is Jack O'Brien, a.k.a. When You're Hungry For Some Daily News. Where you gonna pod? T-D-Z. Wow. And who's the host that can't smoke a dude with sweat on his brow? Jack O'Brien. Yeah, pod moran.
Starting point is 00:03:01 And I'm thrilled to be joined, as always, by my co-host, Mr. Miles Gray. And I guess he's gonna have to smoke some more. You got, you got, you got. Wasn't that in Ghostbusters 2? Yeah, Ghostbusters 2. I just came off the top with that one. Too hot to handle, too cold to hold. That's what people refer to Miles and I as.
Starting point is 00:03:25 Was that also... I won't tell you which one's which. What was the song at the end, like the credits little mini scene with like him
Starting point is 00:03:32 catching the ghost jogger and shit? Yeah. Was that a different track too? I don't know. I thought that was the same one. It was the same one?
Starting point is 00:03:38 Yeah. Yeah. Was it Reprise? Perhaps. Well, a reprise. I just remember them controlling that Statue of Liberty
Starting point is 00:03:44 with a video game controller yeah so i'm not sure how that technology works and i don't ghost man ghost all you have to do is press forward on the joystick and the statue of liberty knows to buy science uh we're also joined in studio by super producer dj daniel goodman what's up man good he's off mic we don't give him a mic. Ana Hosnia could not be here for this one. But DJ Daniel will be in the background. Speaking off mic, you'll be able to hear him vaguely.
Starting point is 00:04:13 Giving weird looks to the not camera. One day, one day this will be. Giving weird looks to the not camera. 2014, Miles. What a year. What a time to be alive. Actually, that was 2015. Oh, you mean the album? Yeah, the album, What a time to be alive actually that was 2015 oh oh you mean the album yeah the album time to be alive i 2014 i am working for power 106 for part of the time
Starting point is 00:04:36 youtube the second half of that year youtube this is when i started like working working working before i don't know if you listen to past episodes some lean years after 2010 and 2013 you were in politics you had a career i had a career and i basically had to save all my money so i wouldn't i wouldn't have to work for a while so i could literally put as much time into trying to get a comedy career as possible yeah so because uh politics was killing your soul yeah no it was it was all right let's talk about 2014 the way we've been kicking these off is just looking at the movies from that year as you know i'm a big believer that the movies uh affect the zeitgeist and vice versa uh and i've been just using google i just Google movies of 2014 and look at the top results
Starting point is 00:05:26 because Google, it might be reacting to me, what it knows about me. Wait, when you Googled this list, this is the order it gave it to you? When I Google movies 2014? Yeah. It's so funny because this morning I wasn't clear on who was going to start trying to put this research together, and I did the same search. the first thing that it showed for me was grand budapest hotel was it yeah huh that's so weird yeah i guess it knows that i'm a sick nerd culture freak who loves
Starting point is 00:05:55 guardians of the galaxy and i love fucking symmetry yeah so isn't that wes anderson yeah yeah yeah grand poot i didn't see it really no. Maybe your algorithm just knows that you need to see that shit. Yeah, they're like, go watch that shit. The one thing I do remember- I really like Grand Budapest Hotel. There was a promotional cologne that my mom got for that movie, and I loved that. Oh, really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:18 It smelled great. I think that's his best movie, personally. Yeah, I do. Damn. I'm just not like a huge- Maybe Rushmore. I'm not a huge- I mean, I like Wes Anderson, but I'm not like a huge... Maybe Rushmore. I'm not a huge... I mean, I like Wes Anderson,
Starting point is 00:06:26 but I'm not like a Stan or anything. But I'll check that. I got time. There's a lot of movies on this list I still need to see. Still haven't seen Interstellar. Uh-oh. You haven't seen Interstellar?
Starting point is 00:06:36 We talked about this. It's like the one Chris Nolan film I was like, I don't know. I need him to be perfect in my mind. Right. But a lot of people are like, yo, just see it.
Starting point is 00:06:44 Yeah, it's fun. It's like, yeah, it's not perfect by any stretch, but it's dope. Gone Girl came out this year. I feel like that was a big, what were you saying? Just a joke that I'm glad you talked over and prevented me from saying. Gone Girl came out this year. I feel like, okay, so Guardians of the Galaxy came out. That was a huge hit.
Starting point is 00:07:05 I also feel like it has taken on... Chris Pine became a thing off of that. Chris Pine? Not Chris Pine. Chris Pratt. The other Chris P. Crispy Chris's. Crispy Rat.
Starting point is 00:07:18 Crispy Meme Donut. Crispy Yamaguchi Mame. Exactly. There we go. Yeah, Chris Pratt became a thing. Before this, he was just andy from uh parks and rec uh and probably in one other thing or something but uh edge of tomorrow the tom cruise movie was not a hit uh aka live die repeat aka that was that was a thing where i had
Starting point is 00:07:40 a dvd yeah around i picked it up i said i don't have a lot going on today. Put it in. It wasn't bad. No, that's a good movie. Yeah, I was surprised. And I feel like it's been, it's kind of grown in stature in our... After the fact.
Starting point is 00:07:52 Yeah, after the fact. Yeah. I feel like Gone Girl, same, like it was a hit, but then like, I feel like Gone Girling has become a...
Starting point is 00:08:00 No, it hasn't. I was going to say, to Gone Girl... You know, it's a thing everyone does. That was a stupid thing. killed me pretending fake one's own death uh no i was i was saying that um never mind uh bird man bird man about where about where it was critically acclaimed i don't feel like a lot of people reference it i mean it's like a who... I feel like I need to watch it again
Starting point is 00:08:25 because I really enjoyed it the first time. But it was just one of those films that I... I'm trying to remember if I liked it because of the way it was shot or because it was actually good. Yeah, this was the year that John Wick came out and that has become a huge, monstrous movement ever since. Huge, monstrous bowel movement. Huge, monstrous movement ever since.
Starting point is 00:08:45 Huge, monstrous bowel movement. Huge, monstrous bowel movement. Neighbors came out this year and was a big deal, and I feel like people have kind of forgotten about that movie a little bit. Was that with Seth Rogen? Yeah, and Zac Efron. Zac Efron. And who is the other woman?
Starting point is 00:08:59 Zac Efron. Rose Byrne? Rose Byrne, yeah. She's great. Rose Byrne. The Hobbit movie, one of the hobbit movies never watched any of them i did not give a shit about those and i feel like people don't really talk or think about those but maybe that's just me but i also the people who i know who have been like you gotta
Starting point is 00:09:17 check it out are tolkien stans right right yeah so there will be comments but i will not listen to them big hero six did you ever watch that or did you even know what that was uh i did because uh i knew some people who worked on it but i didn't know i only knew because they worked on it other than that like it would have flown under my radar i feel like it flew under the radar when it came out it was a like successful movie like it did well in theaters but it kind of flew under the radar culturally and i feel like people don't really talk about it anymore that much but it's good people should check that shit out if you haven't seen it yeah uh the amazing spider's man uh two spiders spider man spider's man uh andrew garfield spider man i feel like has disappeared from the memory of
Starting point is 00:10:02 our what happened to him because he was what he was riding high kind of social network yeah dude because everybody like wanted him to succeed and then he got fucked over and hey he's also an arsenal fan lawyer motherfucker um yeah 22 jump street uh the movie one of the first dates i went to with her majesty oh really 22 jump street yeah and i pulled the move where i legit forgot my wallet did you yeah and i was literally so you weren't pulling a move but you legit but it was that shit where i sincerely was patting my pockets trying to get my wallet and i just go oh shit which you did every time that i've gone to lunch with you. Yeah, I'm always like, oh, mother fuck. Damn it.
Starting point is 00:10:46 I really did it this time. Yeah. I got no wallet. Musically, what are we looking at? We're looking at Uptown Funk. We're looking at Fancy. We're looking at No Flex. Zone.
Starting point is 00:10:56 Bobby Shmurda. Believe me. Lil Wayne. Lil Wayne. There's some good songs in here. The Beyonce album came out at the beginning of this year, right? Or was it the end of the year before? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:11:09 I think I get this and the next year mixed up. But there was some Run the Jewels business being done. Oh, 2013. 2013. Club going up on a Tuesday. I love Makonnen. You know what? Just in fairness to us, it came out in December of
Starting point is 00:11:25 2013, the Beyonce album. There it is. That's why. Finally. Thank God. That's about it. Did the Taylor Swift album come out that year or the next year? Yeah, Taylor Swift dropped 1989 that year, Shake It Off. You guys know how I feel about Shake It Off.
Starting point is 00:11:42 You love it. I can't shake it. It's a jam. So story-wise, news-wise, on the internet and off, so this was the year that Gamergate became a thing, and it was like, man, there is this enormous amount of anger amongst video game playing males towards women because like and it was it was just completely outsized like a woman was like we need to like start thinking about adding some progressive thinking to how we design video games how we review video games and she was like targeted
Starting point is 00:12:22 for death yeah they're like what are you saying they're they're just damseling women in video games and you're saved like she was just pointing out all these tropes and being like are y'all actually understanding what yeah anita sarkisian and it became just a complete nightmare a huge story uh it and i i assumed that this was just like, I don't know, some sort of imbalance in like one specific part of the internet. And it just kept going there. A few years later, it happened to a woman named Zoe Quinn. Zoe Quinn, yeah. Zoe Quinn. And it happened to some of the actresses on one of our videos.
Starting point is 00:13:02 It cracked. of the actresses on one of our videos it cracked and then it like that whole movement became like mega twitter and mega like the online trump hive well the yeah well the zoe quinn thing happened in 2014 also oh it did yeah because that was part of the whole that was like the other thing they were pointing at of like i thought she was accused of um like sleeping with a journalist or something or that she was in a relationship with it. And it just became like this really lame fucking crusade. But yeah, I mean, that was really when I was like, oh, like to me, I was like, oh, now
Starting point is 00:13:34 we really do see that it awoke a certain mentality. Like it allowed all these people to sort of gather around a common cause, which was like women are trying to do what? Yeah, this is where Mike Cernovich came from. He was like a Gamergate persona. But yeah, it really did become a whole thing. Yeah. And then what?
Starting point is 00:13:57 And wasn't Steve Bannon? Was that when he was like, hey, these guys might be ripe for the picking? Yeah, that's exactly right. Steve Bannon saw the energy behind Gamergate and was like, you know, I think there might be room for basically a populist movement on the right to come through and respond
Starting point is 00:14:15 to all these people who feel entitled to sex, basically. It's wild that this is the worst possible version that i could possibly imagine looking back six years on at this story and being like oh this movement became the president yeah right of the united states it manifested itself into an presidential administration right and it so they were a lot so they were able to use a lot of the misogynistic shit from misogynistic ideals,
Starting point is 00:14:50 misogynistic energy from this movement against Hillary Clinton, against progressive ideas. Well, because I think that was sort of also them talking about social justice warriors. Yeah. That's where SJw became a thing and that's when i started being accused of being an sjw i was like wait what because i'm because i'm saying misogyny bad right fucking social justice yeah soy boy uh it's cuts deep huh being called a soy boy oh man i've never lived it down. Yeah. Yeah, Sarah calls me that every day. Yeah, oh, that's why you never want soy milk in the office.
Starting point is 00:15:29 No, it's not good for you, man. Right. It's not good for your... All right, no, I'm not. I don't need to... Tea level. All right. I got low tea already.
Starting point is 00:15:38 People fucking... I need high tea with the queen. Anyways, wild year. They also, like, weaponized it against CNET and got big companies to stop wanting to advertise on big websites. Not CNET. What's the...
Starting point is 00:15:55 IGN. It's just a nightmare. Nightmare alternate history. So this was kind of a dark year, dark couple years. Ebola outbreak was this year. The Malaysian flight that disappeared
Starting point is 00:16:14 happened this year. We've talked on a past episode of TDZ, but this is one of those stories that I think the energy from the media was behind maintaining the mystery. They were like,
Starting point is 00:16:28 it's so mysterious. Like we never know, like it disappeared into thin air and we actually know what happened to the plane. There was an Atlantic kind of deep dive into it and they know where it crashed based on like, you know, debris that washed up on shores and tide patterns.
Starting point is 00:16:45 They have a rough idea of where it crashed. They also know where it was right before it would have run out of fuel, and it was over the South Indian Ocean. And they also know what happened. It was the pilot did it on purpose. I mean, we don't know why necessarily. He was like going through some tough things at home, but he was a veteran pilot in his 50s.
Starting point is 00:17:12 And he had a flight simulator at his home that he ran like thousands of flight simulations on. And one of the last ones he ran, or the very last one, was the exact flight path that they think the plane took before it crashed. So he, it was such a mystery too.
Starting point is 00:17:32 At the time, there were so many theories about what happened, but I think that part of it too, like it, I activated a weird part of people's like, uh, imaginations. I think too,
Starting point is 00:17:43 like there was something really interesting to people at the time when they're like well what really could have happened yeah and i think still like people are still like think that it just disappeared into thin air and i mean there's been i blame lost there's been well there's lost but there's also been like a usa show where it's like this flight disappeared in the 50s and then just landed what What was that other fucking movie from the 80s? Like Manifest? Like Pandora's Box or something? Yeah, but it's...
Starting point is 00:18:10 You know what I'm talking about? Where these people were on a flight and then they land in some weird place and they're completely replaced with others? No. Fuck. No clue what you're talking about. Oh, man.
Starting point is 00:18:23 Twilight Zone? It sounds like a Twilight Zone. I already know the listeners are screaming whatever that movie is, but airplane. Well, we're going to actually take a quick break for Miles to look that up, and we'll be right back, and he will shout it out loud as he realizes what it was. Back in a minute. it was. Back in a minute. When you think of Mexican culture, you think of avocado, mariachi, delicious cuisine, and of course, lucha libre. It doesn't get more Mexican than this. These events were mirrored nearly 50 years ago when President Gerald Ford faced two attempts on his life in less than three weeks. President Gerald R. Starting point is 00:20:15 One was the protege of infamous cult leader Charles Manson. I always felt like Lynette was kind of his right-hand woman. I feel like the last few years I've really unraveled a lot, which is part of what this book is about. And I really feel so content, which is a word that used to scare the crap out of me. And I love that word now.
Starting point is 00:25:20 Listen to The Bright Side from Hello Sunshine on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. And we're back. And Miles, did you figure it out? It's either I'm thinking millennium or the langoliers i think it's the langoliers when i actually read the description but langoliers most of the passengers on an airplane disappear and the remainder land the plane mysteriously at a mysteriously barren airport hmm and that is uh just the way the human memory works that's what people are going to remember as what actually happened to the malaysian flight right uh so it was a total anglers uh so this was also the year of michael brown being killed by a police
Starting point is 00:26:14 officer and uh the protests in ferguson and eric gardner's death was also 2014 there was oh my god that was such a dark it it's the, you know, not that, like the darkness continues. Yeah. You know, it's the same, same shit. And I think this was when, it was just happening with such frequency too. And it continues to.
Starting point is 00:26:38 It just, I don't know. This feels like a problem that just won't go away. Yeah. And this was kind of continuing with the past thread this was also we we saw sort of the militarization of the american police force and like how they dealt with the protests in ferguson they're like giant you know military vehicles and you know all sorts of just really overly aggressive tactics that were used by the police for the purposes of quote-unquote crowd control.
Starting point is 00:27:11 And the guy who killed Michael Brown, the cop, didn't see a day of jail for that. The guy who killed Eric Garner also never saw any criminal consequences he did get fired from the New York police force five years on so yeah justice
Starting point is 00:27:34 this was also the year that ISIS kind of became a thing where we ISIS sort of rose up swept across came out of Iraq and, you know, started fucking shit up basically. Yeah, just uploading horrific videos of all these executions and shit
Starting point is 00:27:55 and all their propaganda. Like I think they, it's like when we saw terrorism move into like the digital age. Right, yeah. They were pretty advanced in terms of how they were pretty advanced in terms of how they were communicating and uh and also just how their military strategy as compared to like al-qaeda we we had started hearing that al-qaeda was sort of falling apart and getting beaten back by
Starting point is 00:28:20 u.s military and then this is basically the remnants of Al-Qaeda in Iraq came through with this massive movement. And this was also kind of like a weird moment, too, where people were starting to realize that YouTube and social media were becoming a real recruitment tool also. Right. It was the first and only bad thing
Starting point is 00:28:46 that social media has ever produced to this day. I disagree. What? Huh. This was also the conflict in Ukraine, in Kiev, where a bunch of people were protesting a head of state who was very pro-Russia and moving Ukraine away from the EU. And, you know, it ended up with a massive protest in the middle of Kiev where they built like a snow fort and fought the cops.
Starting point is 00:29:20 Yeah, Viktor Yanukovych. Yeah, eventually. I think it was pals of Paul Manafort. Huh? Who would have thought? Weird. Robin Williams took his own life this year.
Starting point is 00:29:29 Very sad and depressing. Let's talk about some less sad things from this year. This is the Time Magazine section, things that broke the internet. Uh-oh. We got Kim Kardashian's butt.
Starting point is 00:29:45 Wait, wasn't that like literally what they called it? Like Kim Kardashian breaks the internet or something? Yeah, break the internet, Kim Kardashian. That was the cover of Paper Magazine, and it was her butt. She broke the internet. Yeah. Who's going to pay for this?
Starting point is 00:30:01 Right, exactly. One of you kids broke the internet. Paper's website saw 6.6 million page views. This is where they love talking about hits and page views. This guy, this page has since seen 15 million hits. It seems very outdated. Yeah, that was, remember that? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:20 That currency? Mm-hmm. Wasn't that also them completely copying a different image, too? Like, the image that they're, like, the champagne one? I don't know. I could have swore it was. Like a Dali one? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:37 I mean, I am, right? Because I remember. So, Producer Daniel is confirming. Yeah, exactly. It was, like, of a black woman, I believe. And yeah. This is cool. The beginning of her being like, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:30:51 I thought it was like a really sick photo shoot. Right. This was also the year of the sexy felon. The mugshot of that really, really handsome dude. Jeremy Meeks. He's bae as fuck. Yeah. Isn't he?
Starting point is 00:31:08 He got engaged or married to someone who's wealthy as fuck. Yeah. I don't know if they're still together, but who's that? He got out and left his girlfriend who had been standing by him while he was in jail. Oh, really? And left her for a rich famous person i think um see what happens this is when renee zellweger uh we saw her for the first time in
Starting point is 00:31:34 like a decade and she looked totally different oh that's right right and i fucking forgot it was weird because like there was a lot of like pushback people just being like well leave women alone like stop you know policing what women look like it was not so much that as and i mean this is me a guy saying this but at the same time like i would have had the same reaction had it been any dude like she just looked like she had taken a different person's face and put it on yeah it's it just looks like a different person i think it's just well i think that's the issue right is like you take something like like celebrity culture and how it's like hyper scrutinized and everything so yeah it's a toxic equation where the outcomes will always be toxic right yeah i mean it's
Starting point is 00:32:26 definitely a shame that she or anyone felt pressure to change how well and also when you think of like now too in the nature of like the digital like media landscape like the takes had to be fucked up to get clicks yeah like it couldn't be like re Renee Zellweger has, like, reemerged. Right. The headlines would be like, what has she done to her face? Right. Her face didn't- You won't believe what Renee Zellweger looks like now. She didn't look better or worse. She just looked like a different person.
Starting point is 00:32:56 Yeah. But people were like, what did she do to her face? Where's Renee? Yeah. So, the internet, fuck off. But also, this was uncanny. It was an uncanny experience. Taylor Swift dropped 1989, as we mentioned.
Starting point is 00:33:13 You really left out of that. Sold 120 or 1.2 million copies week one. And now we're going to listen to it in its entirety. Great. The Ice Bucket Challenge. Remember this? You guys seen this? You heard about this?
Starting point is 00:33:27 Didn't do it. You didn't? No one challenged me. I had a whole bunch of people around me who were doing it, and it got to me, and I didn't do it, and that was it. Wow. Yeah. So we can blame you for everything that's happened.
Starting point is 00:33:41 Yeah. Yeah. Bill Gates did it, and his version racked up 20 million views. Charlie Sheen's got nearly as many, and Bill Gates, I mean, he's a humanitarian and a great, great man who around this time was hanging out with Jeffrey Epstein. Yeah, but I think it was just a talk about
Starting point is 00:34:03 how to raise money for ALS. Right, right. This was the year of the Jay-Z Solange elevator showdown. Sometimes it goes down in an elevator. That was the first time that we had an inkling of what was to come with Lemonade and 444. Becky with the good hair had done her damage. And Solange. yeah uh becky with the good hair had had done her damage and slunge uh i this was kind of before solange really like had started dropping like classics right yeah yeah for sure well i mean
Starting point is 00:34:36 at least her first album which was really really good right she had little singles here she had singles like i knew her as beyonce's sister who was at Coachella the one year I went and was dope. Her music was solid. She had a really cool aesthetic that I was like, okay, this person's probably going to be something, but she wasn't like. Well, yeah, A Seat at the Table, which was that album that came out in 2016,
Starting point is 00:35:03 that's when people were like, what the? Hold on, y'all. Did everyone fall asleep on this person? So stay tuned to next episode where we'll probably talk about that. This was also the year of the fappening as it has become known. Didn't people say
Starting point is 00:35:17 or were trying to blame 4chan for it, I think, initially, and then it was like, no, this is a much larger fucked up thing. Man, this was 2014.'s a, it's a much larger fucked up thing. The man, this was 26. What was this? 2014. What year am I in?
Starting point is 00:35:29 14 now? Yeah. So we're in 2014, uh, late August, early September. Hack photos, uh, belong to Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, Kristen Dunst leaked online, spread across 4chan. So 4chan spread it, but they weren't the ones who did the hacking. You had to explain that to Sway? What do you mean?
Starting point is 00:35:54 Like you called into Sway's show? We were doing a guest set on Shade45, and it was the day of the fappening. And he was like, what is this? He's like, what is this? What's fap? So I had to explain the fappening to Sway. did you have to explain what fapping meant too yes oh boy that must have been very awkward uh jennifer lawrence put it uh kind of bluntly and i think rightly it's not a scandal it is a sex crime oh yeah full stop it is a sexual violation
Starting point is 00:36:22 it's disgusting and that's when like also you saw the the on the other side of like conservative people being like well what are you doing taking those pictures anyway right that's the problem i can't fucking believe that was ever anyone's take who is still allowed to show their face in public and have those that's unbelievable that's un-fucking believable you have a you have a right. You have a reasonable expectation of privacy. And I think it was mainstream people. I didn't consume any right-wing media at the time, and I heard that shit. Yeah, well, I meant more in whatever their values are, a bit more conservative.
Starting point is 00:36:56 Right, yeah. And also conservatives, too. Full stop on the right. Right, right. Full stop. All right, we're about to get into 2015. But before we do that, we're going to take one more quick break. When you think of Mexican culture, you think of avocado, mariachi, delicious cuisine, and of course, lucha libre. Starting point is 00:43:20 Every weekday, we bring you conversations with the culture makers who inspire us. Like our recent episode with dancer, actor, host of Dancing with the Stars, and now novelist, Julianne Hough. I feel really whole. I feel like the last few years I've really unraveled a lot, which is part of what this book is about. And I really feel so content, which is a word that used to scare the crap out of me. And I love that word now. Listen to The Bright Side from Hello Sunshine on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. And we're back, and let's get into 2015. It's kind of a, I don't know, weird year for movies.
Starting point is 00:44:17 I mean, Star Wars Force Awakens came out. I mean, that kind of took up all the oxygen. It was the end of the year, but still, it was like such a huge deal. I saw it in Japan. Okay. It was dope it was the first time i uh her majesty came with me to japan and then when i remember that she got up out of her seat but in japan you sit through the credits oh shit you watch a film there because it was just an audible gasp throughout the i was like oh she has hemorrhoids i'm sorry she had to get up but more just like you know it's, but the film, the picture has not ended.
Starting point is 00:44:47 Right. So we will see the credits and everyone who worked on it. And then you will leave. Yeah. Show some respect. There's some pretty iconic movies from this year. Mad Max, Fury Road, Spotlight. I feel like those are both fairly iconic.
Starting point is 00:44:58 They're in the club. But you ever throw Spotlight on? You're like, yo, you want to throw a spotlight on him one more time? I don't know about that. Every time my parents are over, I'm just like, hey, you guys seen this? You guys seen this? You guys heard about this? Mad Max, yeah, was, I think for me, was sort of some of the filmmaking things because his
Starting point is 00:45:18 wife, right, edited the film. Yeah. And she's not an action film editor. Oh, really? Yeah, and a lot of people who are, like, more editing nerds were like, yeah, that's what's really cool is, like, the timing's thought of very differently. And also, like, the central focal point in all the shots
Starting point is 00:45:33 was, like, another sort of cinematic device that they used a lot. And it wasn't until, like, I started reading more analysis of it that I was like, oh, I'm realizing how it operated in many other ways aside from, like, this is sick, dude. Yeah, that's a very rich text. Like, that movie was, like, oh, I'm realizing how it operated in many other ways aside from like, this is sick, dude. Yeah, that's a very rich text. Like that movie was like made for the internet, like both in terms of what you're talking about and in terms of just if you like look at a shot
Starting point is 00:45:54 and there's like all these things hidden in there, like that is an old 87 Trans Am like piece of, there's just all sorts of dope stuff. And then like the writings on, the literal writing on the wall and some of the scenes oh this was i guess a successful movie uh year jurassic world came out that year which was a monster hit yeah the martian which i feel like the martian was huge at the time and i i don't know i never think about that movie ever you're not you're
Starting point is 00:46:22 not popping that one in i'm not popping that well i'm not popping any of these in but i don't know. I never think about that movie ever. You're not popping that one in. I'm not popping that. Well, I'm not popping any of these in, but I don't think about it anymore. I will. The one thing I'll pop in is the border scene from Sicario. Yeah. Sicario, I think, is enhanced. I think Sicario is kind of iconic. It's just that, right?
Starting point is 00:46:37 It's the- When they're driving in to the city? It's just that one track. I think it's called The Beast or something. It's just- Yeah, yeah, yeah. And you're like, well, fuck. That movie. It's just that one track. I think it's called The Beast or something. Yeah. It's just. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And you're like, oh, fuck. That movie was dope.
Starting point is 00:46:51 The big short kind of, I think, became somewhat iconic. Iconic? I don't know. Maybe not. It definitely was one of those films where it simplified the financial crisis a little bit for people. Right. Yeah. I think it. Yeah. Who was it margot robbie where they're like and now margot robbie in a bathtub
Starting point is 00:47:11 in a bathtub explains this to you yeah i mean it was adam mckay's first like successful dramatic movie um but yeah maybe maybe not iconic i guess the financial crisis is iconic so and it was the first thing that like fully kind of made that breakthrough so iconic financial crisis yes legacy the financial crisis is so iconic who have never recovered from it iconic so iconic avengers age of ultron is diminished, I would say. I feel like that was not a movie anyone ever thinks about. Who the fuck is Ultron? That's a guy?
Starting point is 00:47:51 Yeah. It was a series of, it was like the internet became sentient. Oh, really? Yeah, it was dumb as fuck. Is that considered the worst of the Avengers films? Probably, yeah. It's the second one. So there's First Avengers,
Starting point is 00:48:06 which like, invented the whole thing, and was written by Joss. Joss Whedon? Joss Whedon. And it was a lot of fun, but then, I think this one was made by Joss Whedon too, and just wasn't good. And then there was
Starting point is 00:48:22 Captain America. Winter Soldier. Wasn't that this year? Yeah. I'm thinking of Civil War, which was essentially an Avengers movie. And then, yeah. Oh, the cycle. Right.
Starting point is 00:48:33 Creed came out this year. Fucking iconic. Love Creed. Straight out of Compton. Iconic. Dude, straight out of marketing ideas after that. I know, dude. Seriously. Fifty Shades of Grey. Oh, shit. comic dude straight out of marketing ideas after that i know dude seriously 50 shades of gray oh shit that was the first the year first came out that was the year the movie came out or yeah
Starting point is 00:48:53 i guess like 2014 was when the book was everywhere uh no i did not i've not seen it either i did see 50 shades grayer there were 50 more shades. I don't know what the sequel is. The sequel? Yeah. Oh, you saw the sequel? No, I didn't. The Hunger Games movies were coming out at this time,
Starting point is 00:49:13 and maybe it's just my age and I don't know who I am. Oh, the Werther's in your pocket? Yeah. I now have five Werther's in my pocket. I don't know where they're coming from. The number keeps increasing. But these movies didn't make any register, like didn't register at all for me.
Starting point is 00:49:28 Yeah. No, I saw one. Yeah. Because I wasn't, so many people were freaking out about it. Yeah. And I was like, all right, fuck it. I'll see what the fuss is.
Starting point is 00:49:39 And I was like, I don't know. I think Alan Cumming looks cool. Yeah. With his cool outfit. Yeah. That's about it yeah the people in the capital look kind of
Starting point is 00:49:47 dope I don't know there was I think or is it Stanley Tucci yes Stanley Tucci of Donald Sutherland other people yeah this motherfucker ain't in Hunger Games I'm
Starting point is 00:50:01 just making that up yeah Alan Cumming great character actor yeah I feel like the good diner so inside out and the good dinosaurming, great character actor. I feel like the good, so Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur both came out that year. Inside Out,
Starting point is 00:50:08 super iconic. The Good Dinosaur is probably Pixar's least iconic movie. What's The Good Dinosaur? That was like a Pixar movie that just nobody
Starting point is 00:50:16 really gave a fuck about. Yeah, see, this is when my blind spot are all these animated things. And everyone said Inside Out was really good too,
Starting point is 00:50:24 right? It is good, yeah. Where it's like, if you're old enough, you can really get a deeper message out of it. If you're young enough, it's kind of teaching you something. But really, yeah. Magic Mike XXL I feel like is iconic-ish. Ooh.
Starting point is 00:50:37 I wanna fuck you all the time. That one song? Uh-huh. Was that with Jeremiah? Early in the morning when I think about you. Whereas Steve Jobs? Less iconic. And there wasn't even a good strip scene in that.
Starting point is 00:50:52 I know. Like, I was waiting for it the whole time. Who was this one? Oh, yeah. Is Ashton Kutcher Steve Jobs in this one? No, this was the one that was actually a movie. The Ashton Kutcher one was a prank video, I think. Oh, it was Funny or Die?
Starting point is 00:51:06 I think it was a prank on Ashton Kutcher. Weren't there a bunch of Steve Jobs movies, though? No. Yeah. Ashton Kutcher did make a Steve Jobs movie. I don't know what year that was, but it is... That's a prank? It could be a prank video on Ashton Kutcher being like,
Starting point is 00:51:21 Ashton thinks we're making a real movie and taking his performance. Seriously? Yeah, no. Fassbender, I think, did a solid performance. Does he pull his dick out in this, or that's a different movie? He didn't, unfortunately. Oh, damn. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:51:36 That's not the one where he pulls his dick out. Again, waiting for it. Yeah. You really wanted this to be a sexual movie. I'm just, yeah. You wanted him to have that one more thing. Yeah. Be his dick.
Starting point is 00:51:47 This was a huge year for music. To Pivot Butterfly came out, Black Messiah, D'Angelo. See, okay. I love D'Angelo. But you're not a fan of this album? I mean, the band that he has in this is really good. No, I don't even know why I'm even pumping the brakes on it. It just ranks.
Starting point is 00:52:07 It's not my favorite D'Angelo album. That's the only reason. But it's still fantastic. Jamie XX in Kalaur, I believe is how that's pronounced. Great album. Oh, my gosh. And then Drake had a big, big one. If you're reading this, it's too late.
Starting point is 00:52:23 His prize dropped that album. It was like, yeah, it's too late. He surprise dropped that album. It was like, yeah, I just want to get it out of my contract. And I still think it's his best or second best album. And What a Time to Be Alive with Future. He dropped both of those. I could barely listen to that shit. Oh, really? Yeah. I don't like
Starting point is 00:52:40 Future. That's why. Oh, you don't like Future? Nah. When I used to work at Power 106, he came in for an interview. He was so arrogant about what he does. And I was just like, bro, you're on Auto-Tune. A guy named Future was arrogant? Yeah. And this is around the time when he was doing the Hendrix thing on Future Hendrix.
Starting point is 00:52:57 I'm like, Jimmy Hendrix. I'm like, you are not even close to even getting near the creative powerhouse that was jimi hendrix but hey you know you know he's just being honest i think that's when his album honest came out hotline came out this year too uh but yeah i mean that year huh drake that hotline bling dance yeah the hotline bling video was a thing that was amazing that was a half. Dude, the way he was like, everybody did like memed the fuck out of him. Like we were hand swipe video or hand swipe move. Yeah, that was when like awkward Drake became like sort of a, it was like he's not even trying to be cool or maybe he is, but like it wasn't clear. Is this the beginning of Drake's memification?
Starting point is 00:53:38 I think so. The Hotline Bling video was. Isn't the two pane meme set up of the like no and the yeah. Yeah, that's Hotline Bling video was. Isn't the Tupain meme setup of the like, no, and the yeah. Yeah, that's Hotline Bling, yeah. See, this is, I think, the beginnings. Yeah, this is when, I mean, yeah, I feel like this is the year he fully, fully broke through.
Starting point is 00:53:57 Because, I mean, people, you know, he was selling a lot of albums before, but like he was everywhere this year. Yeah. Well, I think, no, 2013 was a big year for him too because uh what's what's that what was that album uh everything nothing was the same yeah yeah yeah that oh yeah with uh just hold on we're going yeah that one is pretty mainstream i think that's when you had like like white people who did not know about drake were like i've got my eyes on you
Starting point is 00:54:23 the face you have to see the face i was making it looks like it looks like he's playing golf people who did not know about Drake were like, I've got my eyes on you. The face. You have to see the face I was making. It looks like he's playing golf while singing that song. I'm doing a fake golf swing. I've got my eyes on you. Oh, man, Tuscan leather. Talking about you, the golf ball. I know how to play golf. You should think the same.
Starting point is 00:54:40 J's on, pinky ring. Talking these hoes, I need quarantine in the same league, but we don't ball the same. That actually a two chains line from two chains all me featuring big sean oh god uh 2015 was like a real fucked up i guess continuing the uh trajectory of this being a fucked up decade we had the charlie hebdo attack in Paris right off. That was like a week in. We had the German wing plane crash where the dude just like crashed on takeoff on purpose into the side of a mountain. We had more cops killing people, this time getting caught on camera. Well, I guess with Eric Garner, they got caught on camera but the the one that like has always stuck out in my mind is Walter Scott in North Carolina or North Charleston South Carolina where he's the dude's just like running away like he had been stopped for having a brake light out and uh the cop just
Starting point is 00:55:39 shoots him dead in the back and then like filed a police report that was like, yeah, he was attacking me, running at me. And it's just like... A murder. He's straight up cold-blooded murder is the guy, and you get a sense that this is what's happening when we're not looking. I mean, with such nonstop Trayvon, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Walter Scott freddie grake every year
Starting point is 00:56:06 this happens and it's just amazing how little people who are on this like blue lives matter shit are like unwilling to look at this objectively and be like no this is actually this isn't even how law enforcement should work right like this is state sanctioned murder right and maybe there is like and you know i know people who are in law enforcement who are not like wired like this who are like sort of motivated by something sincere but like to obscure these arguments by being like you know you never know what these fucking people are trying to do i mean this is what this is what contributes to this mentality uh especially for african americans in this country where we're like you know what what i've we do not see justice at all.
Starting point is 00:56:46 And it's a continuing pattern that just does not cease. And yeah, there'll be people, you know, continuing to protest shit like this because until we see something change or until we start seeing more people be held accountable for their acts, like even with Botham Jean, his killer getting convicted convicted most people were shocked
Starting point is 00:57:06 yeah because like we see this play out white cop kills a person of color black person typically and we get to a trial and it's like oh yeah we're gonna slap him on the wrist and they're demoted or they're like no yeah you're good acquitted walter scott was one case where the person actually did get convicted but they were sentenced to 20 years in prison for second degree murder whereas like this did not seem to be second degree like he to the moment like he just cold-blooded stood there pulled out his gun shot him while he was running away and then falsified the police report like even that like doesn't feel like like this dude should not ever see the light of day again. Freddie Gray happened this year where he was killed by Baltimore police. Just a fucking awful, yeah, awful series of events and news stories that I think were very, very necessary to kind of make us aware of shit that was happening. Well, and then this is also the kind of discontent
Starting point is 00:58:06 that's brewing in the black community that, you know, can be weaponized going into 2016. Right. A lot of people were angry for all kinds of reasons. Like, just looking back, you had Gamergate. You have all these nonstop murders of black men and women by the police. There was a, you know, anyone who was looking at
Starting point is 00:58:24 what's going on in our culture, our society, you know, maybe had some, had it figured out that we have these ongoing conflicts. Right. And, you know, that's the Russian intelligence community was able to, like, exploit both that and there were, like, Black Lives Matter, like, imitation websites that were used to spread messaging that basically diminished voter turnout.
Starting point is 00:58:50 Yeah. Prison Escape in New York that gave us Escape from Dannemora. I think that should be number one. Number one story. Don't tell anybody. One story.
Starting point is 00:59:05 Don't tell anybody. That and also for, as we always say, the actor who plays Lyle. My God. He should have won every conceivable award. Pretty sure. That's the performance that gets the most attention, the run in our um in our office yeah between patricia arquette and him who i know he was in lost also but the way you know i knew he was having an affair on me i knew he was having an affair on me because he ordered off the
Starting point is 00:59:36 locale menu at king's walk yeah and that fucked up margarita they she makes he puts the salt in the motherfucking margarita. The Charleston shooting happened this year. The racist terror attack by fucking Dylan Roof. Bowl cut. Fuck. Yeah, also there were some kinds of weird trends this year. I'm trying to think. I feel like there was a lot of man bun
Starting point is 01:00:08 beginning this year let's talk about that no i i feel like joaquin phoenix jared leto they were starting to do that thing where they're like yo dude this guy's got what the fuck what's up with man bun right yeah and then there was a Bad Blood video with Taylor Swift when everyone was like, what squad are you with? Yeah. Who's squizzy are you part of? Right.
Starting point is 01:00:33 So with that, the backstory to that, which I only learned when reading up on this year. Reading up on history. Right, on history, checking out the history books, was that Katy Perry took some of Taylor Swift's dancers mid-tour. Then Katy Perry was dating Diplo at the time. Diplo was caught in a viral video saying that Taylor Swift should use some of all the money that she makes to buy herself an ass.
Starting point is 01:01:03 Oh, boy. And then Lorde was like, well, maybe people, maybe you wouldn't talk about other people's physical attributes if people talked about your tiny dick, Diplo. Damn. And it was crickets after that. I don't know why Diplo didn't come back with the flames. Different kind of beef.
Starting point is 01:01:25 Yeah. Different kind of beef. Yeah. Different kind of beef in the pop world. Yeah. No one really wants the smoke. That's right. They're just, they want to, they'll do their little passive aggressive videos and then keep it moving. A couple of the lighter stories from this year.
Starting point is 01:01:38 Pizza Rat. This gave us Pizza Rat, the 15 second clip. Oh shit. Where the rat was dragging a giant piece of pizza down down the subway stairs to like just and was that fake right was it there was another one someone did recently there was a subway rat thing that someone did his performance like okay able to train a rat but look i think for anybody who's been in in New York or any place with a high rat population, anything is possible.
Starting point is 01:02:07 Anything is possible. Oh, that's also when fucking Making a Murderer came out. I remember at the end of 2015, people were binging the fuck out of Making a Murderer because I remember being in Japan also at this time. Right. And looking around, everyone's talking about it. I'm like, I think we need to watch this. Yeah. And that was... Yeah. No. Right. And looking around, everyone's talking about it. I'm like, I think we need to watch this. Yeah. And that was...
Starting point is 01:02:25 Yeah. No. No. The dress also happened this year. Oh, shit. Where some people thought it was blue and black. Others thought it was white and gold. Never the twain shall meet.
Starting point is 01:02:40 What were you? White and gold? I need to look at whatever the picture... Whatever it was i i knew what it was yeah what color is the dress i'll tell you right now as i look at it oh yeah this motherfucker's blue yeah blue and black yeah that was correct but it's um i've never been able to see it to be honest with you um and i think because people are i don't know if it was because i've like fucked around with a lot of image editing software right that i can see how
Starting point is 01:03:14 you can like these other values might be present but to me i like nobody would wear in the version that people were confused off of it looks like poo brown and like a weird soft lavender or something. I would never get white and gold from that. But then there was this more recent teal and, oh, now I see it for the first time. Damn, that's wild. Shoes that look both teal and gray and pink and white. I had always seen as teal and gray.
Starting point is 01:03:46 This is like this year's version of that, but it turns out everybody else was like, no, they're pink and white. But I just saw them as pink and white for the first time just now. Huh? You see that? That looks teal and gray to me.
Starting point is 01:03:59 It does? But then look there. Well, that shoe is pink and white. Right. But then look there. Well, that shoe is pink and white. Right. But then look there. Now what do you see? A good gag gift would be to buy someone the dress. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:04:12 That was it. I think somebody rocked that dress to a holiday party that year, and it was dope. Oh, like that you were at? Yeah. Did people recognize it as the dress? Yeah. Oh, really?
Starting point is 01:04:25 Yeah. Because when I see it from the company that made it was someone wearing it it was sold out immediately i don't think i'd be like oh right the dress i like nice dress yeah and ariana grande preparing for her uh for her rise to stardom uh this year she was in hot water for licking a donut. Oh. Simpler times, guys. Simpler times. And Rachel Dolezal. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:04:51 Rachel Dolezal. Let's not forget, you know, my sister from another mister. Well, so Rachel Dolezal was a white woman who had been pretending to be black. Is that correct? Yeah. Was saying, I'm African-American. I identify as African that correct yeah was saying that's who i am i'm african-american well that's said later on right they're like well hold on you're out here being in part of like naacp like regional leadership and then it was like well i identify as black
Starting point is 01:05:18 and then there was uh what the uh caitlin jenner came out was that on june 1st i think or june 2nd because i remember the cynical take was that was the same day the patriot act was renewed and they're like yo y'all were y'all were too busy looking at that vanity fair cover oh really the page yeah there was a there was one of the renewals of the patriot Act was on June 1st or 2nd. Yeah, maybe not. Maybe don't use a huge moment for trans people to be like, yeah, but see, that was all a ploy. Like, it's like, maybe just... I think if anything, it's more that, like, people don't actually actively pay attention to anything
Starting point is 01:06:01 that is happening in the federal government. Right, yeah. Or the things we spend, most people aren't really interested in the machinations and the inner workings of the government. And you're like, what happened with Bruce Jenner? Yeah. Call me
Starting point is 01:06:16 Caitlyn. June, yeah, June 2nd was when this article on Vanity Fair is from. Dude, Pizza Rat. Pizza Rat. I hope Pizza Rat's okay. Yeah, I'm sureity Fair is from. Dude, Pizza Rat. Pizza Rat. I hope Pizza Rat's okay. Yeah, I'm sure Pizza Rat is thriving.
Starting point is 01:06:30 Definitely. You think so? You think Pizza Rat told other rats I'm Pizza Rat? Mm-hmm. Oh, yeah. Pizza Rat has an agent. That'd be a good sort of weird Pixar film about rats who talk, and they're kind of stunting on each other.
Starting point is 01:06:43 They're like, I'm Pizza Rat. And I'm like, well, I'm Pizza Rat. Right. And I'm like, well, I'm Splinter. Rat haters. Well, Pizza Rat reminded me the thing that was so uncanny about it is it looked like a live action Ratatouille. Oh, yeah. Straight up.
Starting point is 01:06:57 Like, because that movie like is all about rats dragging food around. Oh, I've never seen Ratatouille. God. Dude. I'm fucking up. Oh, man. I'm sorry, listeners. I'm going've never seen Ratatouille. God. Dude. I'm fucking up. Oh, man. I'm sorry, listeners. I'm going to have to put a list together for you.
Starting point is 01:07:09 I'm going to give myself the Ludovico treatment from the Clockwork Orange. Oh, my fucking holidays. Just mainlining. Just mainlining children's films. I think I'm the weird one, by the way, because I saw all of these before I had kids. So, I was just. But you like going to movies, though. I do like going to movies. I. I do like going to movies.
Starting point is 01:07:25 I do like going to children's movies by myself. With a can of baked beans. And that boy was me. Well, all right, guys. That has been our rundown of the years 2014, 2015. A lot of other really depressing shit happened. There was a European refugee crisis. There was just a lot of other really depressing shit happened. There was a European refugee crisis. There was just a lot of
