Hello, the Internet, and welcome to this episode of the Weekly Zeitgeist.
These are some of our favorite segments from this week,
all edited together into one nonstop infotainment laughstravaganza.
Yeah.
So without further ado, here is the weekly zeitgeist.
Anyways, we are thrilled to be joined in our third seat by the host of How to Do the Pot,
a podcast demystifying cannabis for women.
Please welcome back to the show, Ellen Scanlon!
Ellen!
Hi, I'm so happy to be here again.
Oh yeah, thrilled to have you back. Thanks for coming back. Thanks for coming back. What's new? How are you doing? I'm so happy to be here again. Oh, yeah. Thrilled to have you back.
Thanks for coming back.
Thanks for coming back.
What's new?
How are you doing?
I'm good.
I'm good.
Do you have the Goop Joint Roller?
I don't have the Goop Joint Roller. I'm sort of a pre-roll buyer.
Sorry, Miles.
No, I buy pre-rolls, too, because there are ones that are...
Okay, this is the thing.
I usually wouldn't buy pre-rolls because the flour that was in pre-rolls was just like the cast it off shake and like not the wheat equivalent of chicken McNuggets.
Yeah, exactly.
Yeah.
Goo like I'm trying to eat chicken tenders, you know, real meat.
So I would always buy the flour and roll my own.
But now there's a lot of pre-rolls that are pretty, pretty potent.
there's a lot of pre-rolls that are pretty pretty potent but also there's some trouble because these dudes in california like sue at this company because they're like yo you're lying about the
percentages on your fucking pre-rolls because that is another you are hiding a percentage
you are hiding a less potent pre-roll behind these numbers but yeah ellen what's your with i i feel
like a lot of people and they go into dispensaries, shorthand is like how high the percentage is. But I've also experienced things
like that, that percentages aren't necessarily indicative of what, how I'm going to, you know,
take that in. What's, what's, how do you determine, you know, what, what pre-roll is right for you?
Well, I think the first thing that I learned
after being in the industry for a while
is that sativa-indica hybrid
is not really going to help you very much.
And it's tough because that's kind of what's available
and that's the classification
and that's usually how people will start.
But it's more of a signal, I think.
Like if you say, I want an indica,
the bud tender is sort of triangulating that to
say like this person wants to chill out. This person wants to be mellow. You want something
energizing. Have intrusive thoughts in my case. Right. Yeah. You know, I tell them how I want to
feel. I just go in with a handful of cash and you're like, hi, I'd like one happy, please.
A happy, giggly day, please.
No stress.
And one mild panic attack.
That was my order.
Damn, I shouldn't have ordered that.
That's what fucked me up.
Yeah.
I'd like to just be chill and not panicked.
Oh, oh, okay.
Well, then you should go to this side of the store.
Oh, fantastic.
Oh, fantastic.
So I start there.
And then we have, we created this list of the 12 essential strains that we think, you know, everyone should have in their stash.
And you don't have to have all 12, but maybe two or three.
And so I kind of use that as a guide.
Like, you know, if you like OG Kush, then tell them that.
If you like a strain, then usually I say, I like that.
What else do you have? I have some brands now that I like too. So I get a little brand specific,
but it's tough. I mean, walking in, it's like you are a kid in a candy store, but there's so
much candy and you don't really know what any of it tastes like. And so it's a little bit
hard. The shopping part is still evolving. I think. For sure. When are we going to start getting days, international days, for a specific strain?
What was the wine that had Merlot Day?
Merlot Day is today.
No matter what kind of wine you drink, the drunk is the same.
I know alcoholics like to be like no actually i was uh white wine drunk
and was feeling very bubbly i don't believe any of that shit but like weed is much more different
it should have more like knowledge of the strains than for sure all the knowledge around different
wine types yeah i mean yeah it's yeah where's our wait where is our fucking OG Kush holiday?
I proclaim August 18th, 818, as OG Kush Day to celebrate the OG Kush growers of the San Fernando Valley.
Thank you so much. Yeah, we've been trying to get an international day together.
Let's do it.
818.
OG Kush Day.
I won't be able to partake, but, you know.
You don't need to.
I'd love to be a
candy cigarette you can have a candy cigarette how about that champ yep drink a little grape
juice and have a nice candy cigarette and i'll sip and i'll be sipping lean and smoking a blunt
what is something from your search history all Well, what I've been searching is
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet leaks.
Yeah.
So the game leaked last night.
And that means like somebody got an early copy of it.
And they're basically uploading photos from the game online
because a lot of stuff is under wraps right now.
So I've been checking the
subreddit for that constantly just for new updates to see new pokemon so what are the good ones what
have you seen that's like oh i'm catching that immediately oh uh well there's this one called
smallive okay and it's like a little olive and it evolves into something called dollive which is like a little olive doll looking thing
so i'm super excited about that so cute cutest overload i love it so when a new pokemon game
is released there are new pokey like individual Pokemans who are introduced.
So that's what is exciting besides there just being a new game.
Yes.
And especially in this generation, they're doing this whole future and past thing.
So they're taking old Pokemon and giving them, what would you call them, archaic forms.
And they're taking old Pokemon and giving them future forms and stuff, too.
So, a little bit of new
and then reinventing the wheel a little bit.
I like the cute outfits and the new towns.
I like when I get my bike
and I can just ride around through a field,
catching things.
It's just, it's so simple.
And then you get, like, a little happy tune.
And then you just collect
without having to spend money, which, you know, for some of us is a challenge so i really appreciate pokemon being there for us
but yeah the game comes out in like two weeks so it's gonna be it's gonna be so fun
yeah i'm i'm personally in the in the process of like the pokemon wave is coming with my four-year-old and six-year-old like my six-year-old's
friends are talking pokemon yeah he just like hasn't gotten interested in it and so i'm just
like i'm gonna have to do a deep dive i'm gonna i'm gonna you know have to know what any of this
shit means in the not too distant future but for now i am enjoying
the brain space that i get to devote to things that are not pokemon don't be the dad that calls
everything pikachu okay there are many different versions you should learn at least 50 of them
and maybe get him like an old school game boy so he could like really get down on some of the
classics but also definitely okay card shops all over la there's a ton of them here you can go and get like vintage
some people sell like your whole binder sometimes they'll do like 10 mystery ones for a dollar or
whatever just get give him some cards he do have to play the actual game yes and he'll be hooked
and then you'll have a fun way to interact. He could teach you the game. You could just play it. It's fun. You know, it's not looking at another screen.
This one that I'll trade for.
Yeah.
I mean, that's what baseball cards did for me when I was his age.
So, yeah, it's coming.
I love it.
I'll be studied up the next time this comes up on the Daily Zeitgeist.
Or maybe I won't.
Maybe they'll just go in a different direction.
Minecraft is the other thing.
Oh, for sure.
What is it?
Roblox also?
Roblox, I know.
But Minecraft is really everywhere.
Like just even trick-or-treating.
We get a thousand trick-or-treaters every Halloween.
And we had some friends over who were eight years younger than I am. But they were calling out all the Pokemon costumes by name.
Like they, you know, I got Pikachu. That was the one that I recognized. And, but they were calling out all the Pokemon costumes by name. Like they,
you know,
I,
I got Pikachu.
That was the one that I recognized,
but they were like calling all of them out.
And I,
I guess,
you know,
90% of the costumes that I had just been like,
Oh,
it's a funny little guy.
That was,
that was what I thought.
It's a funny little,
uh,
animal thing.
That's cute.
Oh,
you're like a little dragon thing
we're we're actually pokemons the whole time and uh i i'm a fool but anyways i i'm gonna work on
it this is actually goes back to i used to run a site called cracked and like our editorial team
was all just right on the brink of like being too old to
know about Pokemon.
And then even like the younger ones didn't really like,
we just had like a editorial bias where they were just like not in on
Pokemon.
And we like had multiple meetings where we were like,
we've got to,
I think we got to hire for Pokemon Pokemon to get coverage in the Pokemon world
because we're just so bad at this.
There's a lot of lists to be made for Pokemon.
Oh, yeah.
That's hilarious.
I forget that Pokemon appeals to children at this stage.
I forget that it's made for children.
And I'm like, oh, yeah, kids like this.
Kids don't know nothing about classic poker.
You didn't have to buy a light that shined into your game
system so you could see the screen at night.
You don't know how difficult
it was collecting those early
packs in a band at school.
It's a struggle to be a part of the
system.
Well, hopefully I reminded you that there's
some easy trades to be made because
you can just prey on these kids.
Just getting into it.
Don't know.
They don't know better yet.
Perfect.
Let's stick with you, Hannah.
What is something you think is overrated?
All right.
I'm going to do another one.
I know I'm going to get dragged and I know I'm going to get slammed.
But sparkling water.
And or mineral water.
Why? Just why? I still don't understand it.
It's not just that I don't like it. I don't see the necessity.
Wow.
Why? Why not just water?
Carbonated water is a frivolous pursuit.
Thank you.
I see.
It bothers me to be asked, sparkling or still?
Or still.
Of course still.
Anyway.
I just get confused.
They say sparkling or still or flat.
Don't they say flat too?
I'm just like, what is?
And now it's flat old sparkling water that you let get flat.
And now you're serving to me as that?
Or is it totally overrated?
All the shows with the posh women with their sparkling water.
I can't stand it anymore.
And that's my story.
And I'm sticking to it.
Okay.
Now tell me, Hanal, does this come from, for you, you're like, if things have bubbles in it, there better be flavor.
Thank you.
Yes. I'm asking, is that sort of the logic? A little bit. Yes. You're like, if things have bubbles in it, there better be flavor. Thank you.
Yes.
I'm asking, is that sort of the logic?
A little bit.
Yes. I just think water should not be messed with.
Water is water is water.
And it shouldn't be messed around with.
And that's all.
And you're right.
If it's bubbly, give me some limonata flavor or something.
Make it a soap, please.
Thank you.
Okay.
I'm mad now.
It's like sort of the way my mom would talk about it
from being from Japan where she's like,
I don't understand why people drink bubble water.
She's like, it's water.
You need water.
I love your mom.
And she had, she's very like rigid thing.
She was like, oh no.
Like if you offered her like Spartan,
she's like, uh-uh.
And there's this assumption that it's the bougie water, right?
Like, of course
you want it!
I'm being generous and giving you the
sparkling water.
Not like the, you know, the peasant
water.
You know what I just found out also is that
seltzer water and
like all those things have
carbonic acid in it.
I have a friend who's a dentist and they were like, yeah,
don't drink like bubbly water and think it's the same as drinking regular
water. It's really bad for your teeth, like carbonic acid.
So another, another mark against it.
Thank you, dentist. And Miles' mom. Yes.
They can be on the WhatsApp chat.
Leela, what is
something you think is overrated?
I know that y'all will relate to this.
Miles and Jack, I know you'll relate
to this, but collagen creams.
Collagen creams
for the face. Thank you!
Right? I know. Say less.
I know. I thought it was going to be an audio thing. Let you. Right? I know. Say less. I know.
I thought it was going to be an audio thing.
Let me tell you why, though.
Let me tell you why.
There have been multiple studies that have shown that these creams with collagen, why applied on your skin, the molecules aren't big enough to penetrate into your skin.
It's been proven and studied and all these things.
Yet, it's crazy how much it is available and how many
people are buying it and how many people are living by it. You got to buy this cream. You
got to buy this cream. And yeah, I just feel like now every time I see it, I'm like, uh-uh,
this is scam. I'm not going to fall for the okey-doke. This collagen cream don't work.
But I might try the ingestible liquid collagen. What about you guys? Are you guys using collagen at all?
Well, as you know, I tried to sell you my personal brand of collagen cream before we started recording.
So I am feeling a little attacked right now, but I don't use it.
Absolutely not.
It's a complete snake oil.
But I'm a royal jelly person myself.
Oh, yeah.
So that's how it looks great. Both of y'all. Oh. Yeah. So that's how I.
Your skin looks great, both of y'all.
I mean, some say it's genetics.
I would agree probably that it's genetics, but I like to say it's from rubbing these jellies on my face.
Wait, what is royal jelly?
Jelly face.
Hey, jelly face.
What is royal jelly?
Royal jelly is like, I know because in Japan, like in Asian skincare products, people are going wild for royal jelly.
Like it's like comes from honeybees.
It's like a secretion where they're like, oh, like it's fantastic for.
All I know is royal jelly was a big fad.
I remember witnessing as a kid and like my mom and aunts were like royal jelly.
And then I just saw bees on the cover and I know it's from bees, but apparently the people talk about it for skin care.
And their skin is amazing today.
Yeah.
Look, or, you know, just go with whatever Cindy Crawford is using.
Dr. Obagi that I see late at night on TV.
That stuff is called surgery.
Don't follow these celebrities.
Right.
Who knows what they do in them clinics yeah seriously what's something you think is underrated i don't know i had a nice apple today i was like when's
the last time you fucking ate an apple right yeah apples are great get right into it i'm an apple
jack i love i love me some. That cereal was named after me.
That's a really good cereal.
Yeah.
It's very sweet.
Like, just so much sugar.
I like how their tagline for that cereal was, it doesn't taste like apples.
It doesn't taste like the thing it's named for that you would assume it tastes like.
It tastes like a third thing.
like the thing it's named for that you would assume it tastes like it tastes like a third thing i think apples have the highest ratio of like the actual thing is much better than anything that's
flavored after it like any of the synthetic flavors for apple just aren't as good as just a
nice crispy yeah it really is apple sometimes you're just at the farmer's market
and you're like oh fuck what's in season apples yeah you refrigerate your apples i don't no you
ever like to eat a cold apple i don't know i have been known to enjoy that demonic energy putting
putting a fresh apple in the i'm a demon you know look i eat soft fries and fucking ice cold apples
with these soft fries i didn't fucking love them what does that mean just like when you get like
you know like when you get like a fry and then you get that one like loose one that's just like
oh the one that's like too oily yeah that's what you like yeah that's weird my my doctor says i
have some problems, but whatever.
It's not just the too oily.
The whole thing about fries is that they're crispy.
And Miles likes a whole batch that is so... He likes In-N-Out fries.
That's spaghetti, man.
I told you, I go a step further.
I ask them to fuck them up harder.
Rare.
You ask for the medium rare.
Where, like In-N-Out?
Blue fries.
In-N-Out, yeah yeah i said in and out
the fries are kind of garbage anyway i know for sure that's that is the rational take but allowed
to say this because we're from los angeles the only way i lean into them is to go like softer
like i like a softer yeah floppy that's why i said like i went to seattle and i went i keep
bringing this up dicks in se Seattle had the best meat in between.
The edges were crispy but also a little bit soft.
I don't like eating like...
Soft dicks.
Crunchy ass.
Do you like a steak fry?
Like a big boy?
A little too massive.
Soft inside?
A little too massive.
Yeah, well, you might as well give me a baked potato at that point.
You know, I had actually some really good potato pancakes at the Red lion the other day you ever get the potato pancakes there no oh they're
fucking so you might like them as a connoisseur of soft fries because they're just like they're
like a pupusa almost they're like they're they're not like a potato pancake like a like a jewish
potato pancake that's like a big hash brown. You know, like grated.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. These are truly like a blob of mashed potatoes that's been like deep fried.
Oh, yeah.
And then like squished.
Yeah.
And it's so good.
See?
You gotta try it.
That's it.
See?
See?
Can I ask you one more question?
Because now this is my show.
This is my morning show.
Yeah.
Do you like shoestring fries?
Yeah.
What about shoestring onions?
Oh, onion strings?
Yeah.
I think those are fucking super underrated.
Yeah.
Not necessarily.
You get the softy boys in there.
The softy brothers?
Yeah.
The softy brothers.
A couple of softy brothers in youry brothers a couple of softy brothers uh in your onion strings
uncut fries i was picturing the ones that like come in a can that are no no okay we're at an
establishment we're talking about like a blooming onion yeah oh you mean like those like french's
onion strings like they use like a casserole. Yeah, I was talking French's. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm cultured.
So I fuck with French's.
I fuck with the French stuff.
I'm a Francophile.
Does anybody prefer a soft apple over a crisp apple?
Like that's a question because.
That's sicko shit.
That is sicko.
Like, but apples persist. There are plenty of apple strains that go pretty mushy and stay on store shelves.
And I'm just wondering, is that even an opinion that people have?
Or is it just a categorical failure of the apple industry?
I think it's just part of the fun of eating real food, eating real fruit.
Got a bad one.
Yeah, you're playing apple roulette every time.
Yeah.
Well, you get the bad apple in the chamber.
Right.
The most delicious apple.
I do want to hear from any listeners,
if you are a mushy apple person,
don't just take the opinion,
but really, if there is a mushy apple that you fuck with,
I feel like Red Delicious tends to be on the mushier side.
If you're like Red Delicious is actually the best apple.
But let me know, because I'm I am confused about the persistence of the Red Delicious and some of the other kind of mushier types of apple.
All right. Well, now that we got the important stuff out of the way, let's take a quick break and we'll come back and talk about election results and how different parts of the country are taking them.
And I'm Jame Jackson Gadsden. We're the hosts of Let's Talk Offline, a new podcast from LinkedIn News and iHeart Podcasts.

I know I'll go down in history.
People are talking about women's basketball
just because of one single game.
Every great player needs a foil.
I ain't really near them boys.
I just come here to play basketball every single day,
and that's what I focus on.
From college to the pros, Clark and Reese have changed the way we consume women's sports.
Angel Reese is a joy to watch. She is unapologetically black. I love her.
What exactly ignited this fire? Why has it been so good for the game?
And can the fanfare surrounding these two supernovas be sustained?
This game is only going to get better because the talent is getting better.
This new season will cover all things sports and culture.

When you think of Mexican culture, you think of avocado, mariachi,
delicious cuisine,
and of course, lucha libre.
It doesn't get more Mexican than this.
Lucha libre is known globally
because it is much more than just a sport
and much more than just entertainment.
Lucha libre is a type of storytelling.
It's a dance.
It's tradition.

And we're back.
And I think it's time to check in with Fox News again.
It's always nice to see how they're reacting to bad news for their party.
Love a little fascist freakout.
I think we can have a little Fox News rage as a little treat for everybody this Friday morning. Why not?
Because they are still angrily dealing with what the heck happened in these midterms. I thought it was a red
wave. Here is a fantastic supercut from Kat Abu on Twitter. I can't believe John Fetterman won.
This is, in fact, bad for the Democrats. They're going to misread this. It's like, oh, we won.
Joe Biden was not punished.
This morning, had there been a big red wave,
everybody would be going, blame Joe Biden.
Can't say that now. You can't say that right now.
Still a win for pro-lifers.
This new generation is totally brainwashed.
When we just owned the libs, we didn't win those races.
This is not a surprise.
We knew it would be extremely tight.
Forget the red wave, the red tide, whatever it was,
it doesn't matter at this point.
They're always going to spin things against us.
Single women and voters under 40 have been captured by Democrats.
So we need these ladies to get married.
Okay.
I've been saying that for years.
Right?
Yeah, so they're starting.
Look, they're having an interesting week.
There was one where Tucker Carlson i think night last night or the day
before he was like now what happens to all these people who we gave millions of dollars to like
he's he's so mad like he wants his money back he's gonna carry the election i don't know what
it is i think he i think he's more speaking on behalf of probably these mega donors that he convinced to go all in on these midterms
like with this terrible
fucking plan
and is now trying to put it
at someone else's feet when let's be real
like him and Hannity have some
pretty outsized power in terms of how the
GOP just like speaks. Oh my god. I mean
can we also just have a moment to recognize that
I guess it's Gen Z. They do not
do surveys
too many surveys too many surveys already in their life they're like i'm not doing a survey
yeah like i don't pick up calls from my fucking grandma yeah exactly pick up this unknown survey
yeah i'll show up yeah i mean although i you know i do think just yelling, yelling at your viewers is the way that they've always
energized their party. So I would really, I wish, I feel like it's all part of this, you know,
basically dominant submissive relationship they all have with each other. And now they're just,
it's like, how do you, what are you doing? You? Bad, bad, bad, bad. And so everyone's gonna be like, OK.
And like it will it will actually energize them.
So I'm a little bit I just see that and I get I want to revel in it.
But it concerns me.
Well, I think what is interesting, though, is how few people who like Republicans actually did lose elections.
They didn't go straight to the bullshit thing, which is interesting.
straight to the bullshit thing, which is interesting.
A lot of people suspect that it
could be because of the lawsuits that are hanging
around and potential other
legal issues that might arise from that
election denialism that may have
hampered the appetite to do that.
But that was one thing I was fully
like, okay, because before we
heard people in certain counties like, we already
want an audit of the vote
before election day. So that felt like a preview of things to come but it hasn't quite uh materialized in the
way i had feared yeah in that super cut i forget who said it but just the and biden wasn't punished
totally sounds yeah that was tucker that totally sounds like when the Grinch is mad that the Christmas still went on. Yeah.
Yeah.
It came with no ribbons.
It came with no bows.
Here's the sound of singing.
Yeah.
Right.
So let's talk about because I also feel like there's a inability to cope with what we've seen in some, you know, more local, but very like, like i guess also in the fetterman race but like
progressive values had a really good day at the poll and specifically like the crime wave narrative
that i think a lot of the mainstream media even though they're supposedly liberal they really
bought into this that like crime wave is going to scare voters we must
democrats must double down on police must do this and like it's been just a persistent narrative
ever since chesa budin and san francisco like was recalled the media has been like
progressive politics is a loser it's a it's a wave we're all fucked yeah and that that just
really hasn't borne out but we're still not really seeing that messaging breakthrough
no i it's it's interesting again no one's really talking there were a lot of progressive da's that
either were elected or re-elected across the country know, like this is like like Philly, Chicago, Iowa, Texas,
Oklahoma City, like a whole assortment of states from red to purple to blue. You know, they had it
all. And Oklahoma City, I just want to point out, too, not necessarily a place or like Iowa or Texas
where the shorthand of the media is like a woke bastion, you know san francisco although like that one with uh budine was a little
bit of an outlier because san francisco is like a little more of a unique quantity when you look
at electoral politics like i know it's billionaires like per square mile of any location so yeah most
people are like it's all dreadlocks and birkenstocks, it isn't. But anyway, in many of these areas, though, where progressive DAs were elected or reelected,
they also have significant minority populations.
And those are the communities that tend to experience much of the crime firsthand.
So they are truly the ones to when they're voting are the ones seeing like, man, this
kind of fucked up policy does not work. In fact,
it's so regressive. It actually just feels like people are just held in captivity for money,
which they are. I want to put this quote from law professor Laura Bazalone, who's from the
University of San Francisco, was on Democracy Now this morning. She said, was sort of describing
what is happening is this quote, this understanding said, I think what all this
tells you is that this experiment, this experiment with criminal justice reform, this understanding
that we can't incarcerate our way to safety, that the kind of cruelty that some of these
punishments are exerting on people to no good effect. And then the other additional problems
like wrongful conviction or just criminalizing poverty so that rich people who are dangerous
can buy their way out,
but poor people have to stay inside, that there are a lot of voters who realize
that none of these policies are humane, just or effective.
Yeah.
Well, and I think just also like just let's turn a complete blind eye to all the white collar crime.
turn a complete blind eye to all the white collar crime like it is so focused so specific on you know basically a poor person a poor or a crazy person is going to shoot you that's it right right
rob you and shoot you yeah right assault you and shoot you whatever that is and that's it and and
why is that you know well that gets a little muddy right but all all of the white collar crime all of that is just always sort of
like no that's under control really which is because you could yeah like you could you could
probably draw pretty interesting lines to like corporate profiteering and poverty to the people
they're like and then those people are like oh i'm poor and violent i think the real violence
is actually happening in the c-suites of a lot of these corporations.
I mean, I was just in, I was in, took my son because it was day off school to the Met and just looking, you know, there's still some of the galleries are the Sackler galleries.
And we all know about the Sacklers and their involvement in profiting so highly off of oxycodone and selling opiates and marketing that.
And, you know, I think there was definitely something talked about.
Were those people?
Yeah.
Why isn't that a story every single day?
You know, of course.
Right.
I think, yeah, when we have such like media consolidation with the billionaire class,
like they know it's like, dude, the people, the guys who own this place,
they might not want stories like that coming out. Exactly. Let's talk about the poor people. Like they know it's like, dude, the people, the guys who own this place, they might not
want stories like that coming out.
Exactly.
Let's talk about the poor people.
All right.
They actively marketed and created a problem that is still killing hundreds of thousands
of people, like killing people every day in the local media.
And instead, the local media is focused on like too much shoplifting and CBS.
Oh, yeah.
And I obviously I live in New York. the local media is focused on like too much shoplifting and cbs oh yeah and i obviously i
live in new york so that is a place that is the story of crime always exists and i know people
my some of my family's in canada but even other places they're always like god i i god new york
must be so scary right now and i'm like it it is Right. That was one of the social media responses I saw to people on, you know, L.A. had a lot of progressive candidates do very well and progressive ballot measures and the existing sheriff get voted out like definitively.
And I saw a lot of people being like, well, you must be the only person from L.A la who hasn't been mugged or robbed this year
and i've been here my whole life family yeah never it's we're good here you're just seeing
fox news's version of los angeles it's it's wild how much fox news focuses on like very specific
cities and like getting a narrative going what has to because it's saying look what happens in the cities where these libs live they think they know it all and there's shit on the ground like
right that's really what they're all trying and it's so bad and it's funny because there are so
many like boomer tweets where people are like oh like you see like a post about crime and like new
york and they're like i've always wanted to go back to new york city you know but guess that's
never gonna happen with the way things look.
I just I just I care too much about my safety.
I'm like, you y'all are really eating this shit up.
Yeah. Yeah. And, you know, for those of us who live here, we're like, good.
Keep out. Keep that PR going out because we need less people.
Yeah, exactly. OK. Yeah. You want you.
Yeah. You want some like out of town to be like, maybe I'll go to Brooklyn and you want their first idea to be like.
some like out of town and be like, maybe I'll go to Brooklyn and you want their first idea to be like, no, I mean, I, I remember before the pandemic, uh, you know, I've lived here 20
years and just before the pandemic sitting on a subway and just watching, you know, what I'm just
going to call very entitled tourists who, you know, they were a little too casual with their
New York experience on the subway. And I just want to just like, I don't want anyone to be afraid,
but I was like,
shouldn't you be just a little more afraid?
Like you don't own this place.
You're visiting.
Okay.
You're visiting.
Right.
Seriously.
But so the New York times,
I want to specifically call out for their lack of coverage and not,
not just lack of coverage of like this progressive movement and grassroots movement that we're seeing like come through and start to show real promise in some of these local elections. And, you know, in the big what was supposed to be like the focus of the election night with Fetterman defeating Oz. But like there I don't I don't feel like they've really figured out how to spin that. And to that point, The New York Times the day after the election published a piece in the opinion section, but it was very much couched in like here's statistics and here are the facts. And we talked to pollsters and a Harvard sociologist. The article is titled For Republicans, Crime Pays,
No Matter What Else Happens. And the entire premise of the article is that the Republicans
really doubled down on crime in this election. I'm just going to read a quote like they quote,
a Democratic pollster is reinforcing this point that like it's a winning it's a winner for Republicans and a loser for Democrats.
And this is a quote from a pollster. The 2022 midterms will be remembered as a toxic campaign, but an effective one in labeling Democrats as pro crime.
Greenberg wrote in How Democrats Mishandled Crime, a November 3rd American Prospect article. When voters in our
survey were asked what they feared the most, if Democrats win full control, and then like just
56% chose crime and homelessness out of control, you know, all of the talking points that go along
with this. But the article just, I think they wrote it before the election results and just removed a couple of the more
strongly worded parts because they even mention Pennsylvania. The Republican focus on crime is
reflected in spending data. On November 3rd, in the Reason Republican Attacks on Crime Are So
Potent, Li Zhao, a reporter at Vox, wrote Republicans have spent $157 million on crime-related
ads. And the breakdown is even starker in the Pennsylvania Senateox wrote, Republicans have spent $157 million on crime-related ads.
And the breakdown is even starker in the Pennsylvania Senate race, where Republicans
have spent nearly $12 million on crime ads compared to $2.5 million on the economy and inflation.
And they don't go on to mention that that was a loser. That was a losing strategy.
And it just, it goes down, go they go down to interview like paul
begala and be he's like it worked for clinton they just need to be really tough on crime and
double down on policing and the death penalty and just all these like old school like 90s political
it worked in 92 after the riots yeah like you know what i mean like what the what the
fuck are we talking yeah then maybe when people were ignorant as shit like it's so weird i i'm
wondering when the new like when all corporate media like i mean they're never going to but like
they've really shown they are so out of touch nothing they said is just is in touch with
anything the amount of red wave coming red wave coming
coverage on the new york times like this was a quote this was an article from what october 19th
democrats feared red october has arrived many democrats hoped it would be a weird election
but with election day just three weeks away the mig terms aren't shaping up that way and
but let's pretend that motivated people let's just pretend that it was there was
some potential and let's just pretend you know even in new york where if you were a democrat
people are always like yeah your vote you know it counts but it doesn't really count you know i was
at a show with a bunch of people that work in politics and they were like you every vote is
gonna count tomorrow okay yeah and uh i i'm to voting, so I just became an American citizen recently.
But I was definitely going to do it.
Thanks.
But I do feel, I haven't seen the numbers on the turnout, but I felt like it was really good.
So I don't like that we are driven by fear.
Yeah.
I mean, New York was a little different it wasn't great
for democrats which a lot of people were surprised because yes the party ended up fighting a bunch of
like left like candidates on the left like spent more energy fighting candidates on the left than
like attacking like this crime like lee zeldin's crime wave insistence which motivated a lot of
republicans to come out like in an interesting way,
because I think that's where New York's a little different because it is so
blue.
Every Republican's like,
exactly.
Get them all out.
And like they fully turned up while I was like,
it's fine.
I don't know.
New York's not that blue,
by the way,
New York is first of all,
historically,
like there they've been like,
they were pro slavery at the beginning of like beginning of when it was the Dutch East Indie colony founding it.
And that kind of reverberated down through the politics.
There's a lot of Republican mayors and shit.
There's a former chief of police mayor. Eastmair, like New York City has like very you're right. It's like very specific and unexpected politics that don't really fit into the overall narrative.
I mean, more in the sense of like for the Republican voter, they can look at a Democrat
governor, senator, other leaders in that sense to say the leadership is blue.
Yeah.
And that is a motivating force for people to come out.
But I'm wondering, like, you know, there have been so many bad takes,
and shout out to the people on Twitter
that have just been collecting
everyone's terrible bad faith arguments
prior to the election,
because we really should be like,
what's your strategy for, like,
having better, like, a better way to engage
with, like, the stories that are happening
rather than seeing, like, what the herd is doing?
And then be like, well, here's my take
on the herd mentality.
Right, just all editorial. Just all editorial.
Yeah. And it's all covering it like it's a sporting event.
And like so this article doesn't explicitly do this, but it does essentially do this,
which I think is sort of the mainstream Democrat and mainstream media apparatus,
sort of, I don't know, conception of how Democrats can possibly conceive of crime.
They can either double down on, like, basically be a Republican about it and be like,
we need to fund, like, extra fund the police and support the death penalty like Clinton did.
We can ignore that crime is a problem or just say defund the police and offer no further context.
Like, those are the three options that they are dealing with in this article.
And it's just like a Tucker Carlsonian bad faith argument of like how to even approach this.
And so they published this article after this overall strategy was shown to backfire in a lot of like really significant ways for the
Republican Party. And they completely ignore anywhere where there is like this alternative
messaging that came through and worked like at a local level. Right. The you know, we talked
on yesterday's episode about Kenneth Mejia, who ran a campaign that was he's like 31, just really focused. He was a
defund the police candidate. And that was like his most explicit position. And he outperformed
both mayoral candidates, both the like very mainstream Democratic candidate and also the,
you know, fake Democrat Republican Rick Car caruso he vastly outperformed them
by just giving specifics by just being like here's like when when you say defund the police look how
much they are funded compared to everything else yeah and like so all you needed to do was speak
honestly and respect people's intelligence on the subject instead of like this
whole Paul Begala, James Carville thing where it's all this like smoke and mirrors and we have to
message it this way. And people don't understand you can't get them in touch with their safety
unless you do a real horrible, violent act in front of them. And that's where our money should
be from the police. Dumbest thing I heard since my mama tried to put a boot on my head and call it a bounty what the fuck are
you talking about uh i think it all you're what you have to say though all broke down when you
said and respect their other person's intelligence that is ridiculous we do not do that okay right
right can do that that That's the planning work.
So I do think this goes, like, each generation gets a little bit savvier at dealing with the media than the previous generation. But the media is run by older generations, and they are working with assumptions that, like, people are different than they actually are.
like people are different than they actually are.
And that's what, like, we saw Gen Z actually come out and vote,
and they didn't vote the way that anybody in the mainstream media expected them to.
And it's like, yeah, they voted in a way that seems like they... They're looking at the problem.
They read.
Right, aligned with their values and based on policies
and based on, you know, based on stuff that we're trying to
actually talk about in a real way instead of
just all the smoke
and mirrors and the, this is gonna
happen, just wait, you're gonna wake
up and all your rights are gonna be stripped away
and then what are you gonna do?
I keep comparing it to
that M. Night Shyamalan movie,
The Village, where they really think
you just keep telling everybody
the same shit over, you don't want to go out
there. You don't want to see what's out there. But guess
what? Most people are living out there.
They don't actually live. So your village
ass messaging doesn't resonate
to somebody who lives
in the area where they're like, yeah, that's a motherfucking
airplane. Oh, y'all didn't hear about
that in the village? Well, that's on
y'all. And this whole election, I village well that's on y'all and this
whole election i feel like was really defined at least to me is what i'm seeing like broadly by
just people beginning to feel the disconnect between policies that uphold the status quo
and what their actual day-to-day lives are like and from there using their own intelligence to be
like i see somebody who's destitute or i look at my own situation where I can barely afford housing.
And I don't think that the plan should be, yo, get kick these people out to the Mojave Desert where they can just expire in the sun.
It's I think we need more affordable housing.
Right. You know, the fuck is going on?
These woke people. No.
Talk. So what about tax cuts for luxury planes?
talk so what about tax cuts for luxury planes yeah i do i do have to call out this harvard sociologist though for they they made this claim so they were like democrats want to claim that
crime isn't a problem but that ignores that crime is a problem in you know black neighborhoods and
poor neighborhoods so you know not funding the police is racist is essentially
the argument that they make and it's like to your point miles we saw that people who live in
neighborhoods that are affected by higher crime are not buying into this bullshit narrative that
like the way to attack this is by fucking funding a police force that acts like an occupying army
like they know that this is bullshit and getting paul bagala and a harvard sociologist to tell
them otherwise isn't isn't tricking anyone yeah well yeah good luck to them don't you remember
that's how we solve things give them all guns why doesn't everyone have a gun yeah exactly and then
even then a lot of people are like no i don't i don't even think that what you really said that out loud they also yeah they
quote the so because this is a crime article they had to like quote the crime statistics which are
very like complicated and they point in different directions in different parts of the country
and they were like but the one thing we're seeing is more gun violence and more murders. But they don't mention like because there are way more guns and anytime there's more access to guns, that's what happens in in this country. Because, again, that's just seen as a, I guess, childish argument because it doesn't take into account the reality that like, well, you know, gun manufacturers own all of us. So we can't actually say that.
What are you, a child?
Get the fuck out of here.
Right.
Exactly.
Quiet.
Daddy's listening.
Right.
Exactly.
Got to meet with Wayne LaPierre later.
I'm continuing to search Kenneth Mejia on the New York Times just to see like, when
will they mention this race that is like a great blueprint for how the Democratic Party
should move like all
at once yesterday and the only mention so far is a halloween article about how like when democrats
go against each other it gets nasty folks and they quote his opponent claiming that he is a anarchist and an anti-Semite.
They put that in there and he's not.
And it's like absolute.
But that's the only thing that they've mentioned about this candidate who just, you know,
used a strategy that, yeah, anarchist.
I mean, that's the smear for people who believe
that less physical police presence and like more support for communities is the answer is they really go.
Yes. Oh, so you're for anarchy. Right. Yeah. Right. Exactly. Lawless society. You want just nothing. Right. Yeah. Right. And as a Jew, I will say, you know, most people are anti-Semite. So you just sort of like you just that's like a penny. You just get rid of that.
are anti-Semites. So you just sort of like you just that's like a penny. You just get rid of that.
All right. Let's take a quick break. We'll come back. We'll talk holiday movies. We'll be right back.

I'm Keri Champion, and this is season four of Naked Sports, where we live at the
intersection of sports and culture. Up first, I explore the making of a rivalry, Caitlin Clark
versus Angel Reese. I know I'll go down in history. People are talking about women's basketball just
because of one single game. Every great player needs a foil. I ain't really near them boys. I
just come here to play basketball every single day, and that's what I focus on. From college to the pros, Clark and Reese have
changed the way we consume women's sports. Angel Reese is a joy to watch. She is unapologetically
black. I love her. What exactly ignited this fire? Why has it been so good for the game?
And can the fanfare surrounding these two supernovas be sustained?
This game is only going
to get better because the talent is getting
better. This new season will cover
all things sports and culture.

And we're back. wakanda forever drops in two days as of the day this episode drops it's wednesday drops on friday reviews are in or thursday night they look they're between like
solid and glowing super producer joelle i think saw it and i'm not allowed to say what she said but
suffice it to say it looks very good things are looking very good for this movie good over there
pretty good early estimates suggest that everyone in america is going to see it at least twice
this weekend um the dollar figures are wild they They're like, yeah, we're seeing like
250 million in like one weekend. It's crazy. Anyways, a lot of people are going to see this
movie. I'm going to see this movie. I don't know if I'm going to see it this weekend,
but I'm going to see it ASAP. And it raises the question. There's recently a cinemark map so cinemark the theater chain created one of those
maps where like this is everybody's favorite movie theater candy by state and it is one of those maps
that actually seems to be based in fact you can tell because the the results are pretty boring
in some cases like they're a big
chunk of the country is just like yeah we like m&m peanuts just just like you would expect because
m&m peanuts are good somebody writing about it was like is it do they like m&m peanuts because
they come in yellow wrappers and that's the easiest easiest snack to see in the dark it's like
no no have you ever eaten in a movie theater?
It's about no look eating the whole time.
You're like, where's my bag of whatever by my lap?
Just keep shuffling that into your mouth.
Who is putting that thought into it as being like, which of these is going to be easiest for me to see in the dark?
Right.
First off, I want to ask, what is everybody's favorite movie candy?
Just so we can establish some kind of baseline here.
Yeah.
Mine isn't even on here. It's the Raisinets.
Oh, great answer. Good answer. Good answer.
Thank you. Thank you very much.
Thank you.
I mean, have you guys ever taken some lightly buttered popcorn, just lightly, you know, just a dab.
You take your raisinets, you sprinkle them on top of that popcorn, you sit in the dark, and every handful is like a bite of, a burst of surprise and joy.
I just, I've also had major stomach pains and vomiting after.
Yeah, it's, yeah, raisinets do not sit well in my stomach,
but when, oh, they're so fun going down.
What?
I can't taste,
I don't like their taste at all.
I'm sorry, Leela.
Controversial.
Me and Leela have not gone to the movies yet.
I mean, you should come here.
You could just drive up
and we should go see Wakanda together.
We can see it three times this weekend.
I'm going purposefully to the blackest theater in oakland at grand lake grand lake theater that's where
we're gonna go see it and mine is whoppers whoppers also not on here also not on here
chocolate balls also they're malt thank you very I love those, too. They're malt. I love those. Thank you very much.
Yes.
Although they crunch.
And that's not ideal for a movie situation.
I realize that.
Still, I love woppers.
Mine's also not on here.
But, Miles, you do yours first.
What is going on?
You're really...
This is non-representative.
I'm telling you. It's like the elections. Thank you very much. I think we're out here. Look, we contain multitude? This is non-representative. I'm telling you, it's like the elections.
Thank you very much.
I think we're out here.
Look, we contain multitude.
This is America.
Don't just reduce us to one logo on a state.
I would eat Nerds Ropes if they have them.
Yeah, Nerds Ropes are fantastic.
Or Twizzler.
I think I had some recently.
Twizzler is Redfog.
That you could split apart, though.
I think it's like a sweet and,
Oh,
you know what?
It could be sweet and tart ropes.
Sweet tart ropes are the number one.
Alaska theater in Alaska.
No,
that's next to eating a dungeness crab in the theater.
But yeah,
I like,
I like the fruity kind of like sour candies.
Like I'll go crazy if i'm yeah like
on 421 i went a couple years ago i got popcorn i get a little bit of a cup of nacho cheese to
dip my popcorn in wow okay because i'm a savage uh then i get the the like the the candy ropes
or whatever and then i gotta have some kind of peanut butter situation. It could be Reese's Pieces.
It could be peanut M&M's.
Can I just say Red Vines headquarters is five minutes away from me.
Wow.
Okay.
So let's get into this.
So let's,
I realized that we never,
we just started in talking about our favorite,
but we should say,
so the number one answer is M&M peanuts and M&M peanuts are dominant from
Texas and every state surrounding Texas, essentially.
It's also Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, like a bunch of those states.
Or not New York, actually.
New York is cookie dough bites.
So M&M Peanuts have like a big stronghold in big chunks of the country that are very
populous and also Wisconsin. And then there is a big stronghold in big chunks of the country that are very populous and also Wisconsin.
And then there is a big divide. It was mentioned before Miles said red vines. One of you said
red vines or Twizzlers or Twizzlers or red vines. They are separate. They're different candies and
Twizzlers are the East Coast and then red vines are. So Red Vines are the number one candy. Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada. It's it's the most it is holding down an entire Idaho, Colorado. It's holding down that entire chunk of the map and nowhere else. Nowhere else. Yeah.
Yeah. But Red Vines. So Red Vines started in Chicago and Twizzlers, I think, started in New York. And it's been that way since day one that they're like, you know, regionally. It's either, you know, either the Mississippi or west of the Rockies. We don't know where exactly to divide it. But Red Vines are dominant on one side of the country and twizzlers i wonder what the story is there that's fascinating yeah i don't know yeah i wonder if like if you
went into like a a movie theater in like fucking maryland or something you're like let me get some
red vines and they're like red vines like if they would if it would be like that kind of an outward
thing because when i didn't know about red vines when I grew up on the East Coast.
I only knew of Twizzlers.
I knew about Twizzlers from the commercials, but I never saw Twizzlers in the store growing up in LA.
I always saw Red Vines. That big tub of Red Vines, I've always, I don't know, that used to be a thing we would drink root beers out of.
So Twizzlers is owned by, I think, Mars or Hershey.
And so I think they're...
Twizzlers headquarters, Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Yeah.
Okay.
Red Vines headquarters, a five minute walk from me.
So maybe it's just shorter trucking times.
Yeah.
I mean, Twizzlers origins are traced to New York's Young and Smiley confectionery firm in 1845, which was bought by Hershey's in 1977.
Okay.
And then the American Licorice Company of Chicago premiered its black licorice vines in 1914.
And then the classic raspberry vines, which is what Red Vines' original name was, made their debut six years later.
Wait, are Red Vines raspberry flavored?
They're supposed to be raspberry.
Are they?
I don't fuck with either, really.
I don't either.
Because they're not tart enough.
I need them to, like, Nerd Ropes are the rope that was promised.
Like, I need it to be like sweet and tart.
I don't I don't like they're just both so dull.
So you're a Sour Patch guy.
So, yeah, that is my candy of preference.
The Sour Patch Kid.
Like my teenage daughters.
Welcome to the world.
You, candy.
I yeah, I think they mix the best with popcorn, too.
I love to dump my Sour Patch Kids in.
I was going to say the Raisinets.
I said earlier when you were talking about Raisinets that you can dump the whole box in.
But actually, Raisinets, they all go to the bottom.
So you have to do a layered thing.
You have to do a handful.
Sour Patch Kids, though, for whatever reason, they don't always fall
all the way to the bottom. You can
dump them. Can I ask a question?
Why are there states that have none?
Like, Maine apparently has no
favorite candy. They
refused to report.
I wonder if, like, Cinemark
doesn't operate there, maybe? Yeah, I think
that's probably it. Cinemark
doesn't have any chains there
oh they operate in new hampshire but not vermont huh okay it's being drawn but and like yeah
twizzlers are also like i know people who are like you got to get a fresh batch of twizzlers
you got to get a fresh batch of twizzlers i just got someone i I know got a shipment of Twizzlers
recently and they're like, I got fresh ones.
Come try them.
They don't taste fucking better fresh at all.
It's like it's sourdough bread or something.
Yeah. I don't know.
It's just like, I get that there are
freshies you want to have from Halloween
candy, right? Like a fresh
Abba Zabba, that is good.
When they go too long they turn to
cement or whatever but a twizzler or like a red vine i don't know about like a stale one where
i'm like i think i'm just not a candy candy freshness is real i have come to appreciate
that the freshness of a candy over time definitely helps is it it's better like when when it's kind
of new like when you're eating halloween candy candy in the new year, that shit is no longer any good.
Right.
For the most part.
I mean, I still eat it.
Our neighborhood kids took everything but left the Tootsie Rolls, which really surprised me.
I love Tootsie Rolls.
The fudge.
What, Leela?
I'm not a fan of the Tootsie Rolls.
The dance or the candy.
Yeah. I like it the candy. Yeah.
I like it. It's good.
But they kept like moving
literally
moving them aside and
looking for the sour stuff
like Jack. Yeah. I like
the sour stuff. The kids
these days, that's how you know
we're a young hip podcast. We say kids
these days. Yes, you are.
They like the sour candy, that's for sure.
The Six Nine Boys should have done a collab with the makers of the Tootsie Roll.
They didn't.
They never did.
There's probably some commercial somewhere.
I know.
I mean, what happened to Quad City?
You know?
How far have we fallen in this time since 1995 or 6?
Their music is still very popular in all the parties.
So I don't know, you know, even like high school proms.
Oh, they still know about Miami-Base.
They are still whooping.
There it is.
Isn't that them?
Is that them?
Oh, no, it's not them.
No, it's not them.
No, no.
Quad City DJs.
Quad City DJs.
Isn't that them?
The whoopop there it is
No?
That was a DC
Tag team
Tag team
Back again
Let me hear some noise
DC's in the house
Yesterday
Where I was playing that song in the car
It's been on my kids playlist Since since they were, you know, two.
And my six-year-old was like, yeah, I don't really like this song.
I was like, no.
Really?
That's a hard moment.
Yeah.
I think it's probably because we've worn it out, but it's still.
Wow.
They really don't?
Huh.
So they can't.
Brutal.
So they cannot dig it
yeah i said can you ever turn around and well y'all dig it we can dig it dad look at the road just look at the road dad stop looking around asking me can we dig it our own graves because
you're about to crash this car Miles, what's your favorite
candy? Did you say? Oh, you said
the ropes? I said nine things
because I'm high when I go into a movie theater.
I have to indulge all my senses.
Sweet and savory. But none of ours
were really on here.
Other than, I guess, Red Vines. I will say
Reese's Pieces, I love,
but that's all because of E.T.
E.T. is the best product placement of all
time. It remains the best product placement of all time. I don't think I like Reese's Pieces.
I don't think I've ever liked them, but I still fuck with them when I'm at a movie theater because
of E.T. And because of E.T., I started getting them when I was young at the movie theater and
just have like an association where I'm like, man, if I eat a pound of Reese's Pieces, I get a wild sugar high.
So I still remember getting those at Honey, I Shrunk the Kids when I was a child.
Oh, wow.
Those were the days.
How do you what's what are your thoughts on Reese's Pieces?
I'm neutral.
I'm very blah, bland, meh.
I don't have you know, I don't hate them. I don't love them. They're kind of just meh. But I find it interesting that you would like that your palate would enjoy a food because of a movie.
Yeah. I think it's like the association. It's purely the association.
There's like there have been a few movies where like or TV shows I started eating stuff because of what I saw on TV.
Like I remember Abba Zabba because of how high or no, I mean, half baked.
They're talking about Abba Zabba and I was like, I'm going to try that. And then I was like, OK, this is interesting.
Reese's Pieces because of E.T. There was one other one that, oh, in Mallrats, this dude is eating like chocolate covered pretzels in a scene.
And then I became, I just like went all in on chocolate covered pretzels.
Yeah.
So I don't know.
I think what all that to say is I'm stupid.
And I want to be like TV screen.
The advertisements have worked.
They work on you.
Huge. One hundred percent. Yeah. One hundred percent 100 yeah and i don't i didn't knowingly
say i'm eating this because of et it's just that et eating those things and it had like they they
followed a nice little crunch whenever he ate it and the colors of the bag for whatever reason it
just it worked they got my ass and that was supposed to be m&ms and mars fucked up and
just were like we're not interested in putting our candy in your little movie and so they went
with reese's pieces and oh that's right yeah and they're like you can do it for free and you know
too much about this we did a whole thing on it because we were we were really thinking about how
like seminal that is for Reese's Pieces
that E.T. thing and I think it's also seen
as wacky little fingers just drop a couple
Reese's Pieces like
that's appetizing
I don't know why but it felt magical
it does it works for some reason
it shouldn't none of it should work
I can't offer you
I can't offer you a good explanation
I judge myself
those nasty little fingers though alright that's I can't offer you a good explanation. I judge myself.
Those nasty little fingers, though.
All right.
That's going to do it for this week's weekly Zeitgeist.
