Hi, I'm Akilah Hughes, and I'm so excited about my new podcast, Rebel Spirit, where I head back to my hometown in Kentucky and try to convince my high school to change their racist mascot, the rebels, into something everyone in the South loves, the biscuits. I was a lady rebel. Like, what does that even mean? It's right here in black and white and prints. It's bigger than a flag or mascot.
Starting point is 00:00:55 Listen to Rebel Spirit on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hi, I am Lacey Lamar. And I'm also Lacey Lamar. Just kidding. I'm Jack, that's Miles. Apparently, we've done that one before. KD Did Dent. I did dent. Christopher Moltisanti. We've done that one before, but it's a good one it's a classic if it's so good that it's recommended a second time by
Starting point is 00:02:30 one of the great such as KD Dedent then we'll do it again at this rate it'll be nightmare on trend street was that the first one we did it was one of the first anyways I'm Jack that's my house here are Was that the first one we did? It was one of the first.
Starting point is 00:02:47 Anyways, I'm Jack. That's Miles. Here are the things that are trending right now. Dr. Tobin is trending. That was one of the expert witnesses at the Derek Chauvin murder trial. He is a doctor who said that George Floyd died of a lack of oxygen to his brain. Uh, this once again feels very straightforward. I don't know how it's not straightforward. Uh, everybody, uh, the, the one thing I've heard is that they found like a two second clip right as he was getting off of him where it appeared that he was Derek Chauvin was kneeling on his shoulders.
Starting point is 00:03:32 And they were like, see, but they're right there. Wasn't he kneeling on his shoulders? Uh huh. And what about that's what NPR highlighted on their up first podcast. They highlighted that. Is it because they have government funding? Like they can't speak facts about white supremacy? I just think they're so horny for both sides in it.
Starting point is 00:03:51 Like melt brain. Yeah, I think it's that. Yikes. Anyways, hopefully this is as open and shut as it appears it should be. Oh, wouldn't that be nice would wouldn't that be so simple yeah unfortunately uh but yeah i mean like i guess that's just all the prosecution can do is eliminate every stupid fucking defense they have to be like oh maybe he actually had these health
Starting point is 00:04:18 conditions like no no no he died from that yeah well maybe well, maybe this other... No, no, no. Here's another person who's a police expert, too, who said, no, no, no. That shouldn't happen. And there are other police officers who have been willing to testify against him, which is very rare, exceedingly rare. Yeah. Anyways.
Starting point is 00:04:44 There was another mass shooting uh last night a former nfl player whose dad said that he was messed up by football who had multiple concussions during his nfl career uh went on a shooting spree murdered uh five of his neighbors and then took his own life. And yeah, just the most American horrific event. Somebody who has mental problems from football is able to get a gun and do a mass shooting. Biden, meanwhile, and I don't think this was planned to coincide with this in any way, but he passed today some executive orders to make it harder to get a gun.
Starting point is 00:05:36 There's a red flag. Pass some fucking legislation. Right. Because the people are just going to sue you in court with these EOs. That's fucking useless. And then the Trump administration part two will come through and make it so that everyone over the age of five has to buy a gun with their executive order. Exactly. Yeah. It's very frustrating.
Starting point is 00:05:59 Like Obamacare with guns. Right. Oh, if you don't have a gun, then you're going to have to go on the exchange and you gotta have a gun everyone must have a gun yeah it's just fucked up and yeah like you're saying it's this person's a product of a fucking sport that regularly just puts bodies through the meat grinder and chews them up and spits them out on the other end with no support and on top of that we have a fucking medical system that doesn't support you unless you can afford it or, you know, whatever. And this is what the fuck happens. It's just, yeah, it's just so fucked up on some, like, on multiple levels now.
Starting point is 00:06:32 It's not just the terrible out-of-control gun violence or, you know, lack of support for people. Now we get to introduce the fucked up nature of the NFL. Yeah. Let's talk about OutKast. OutKast, greater thanles uh has been trending this week somebody was saying we're we have not uh healed until we admit that outcast is better than the beatles uh or something of that nature uh this has raised the question of who's better i think i love any trend toward more outcast appreciation i love all outcast fans all love a good outcast take uh i mean yeah you know a lot of people
Starting point is 00:07:14 i don't know how you compare them but if a lot i think the more compelling one is like well you know outcast didn't have 40 years worth of black music to incorporate into their own thing. Outkast very much has their own sound within hip-hop. For me, it's not even a question, but I don't really listen to the Beatles that much. I mean, I appreciate what they do musically, but...
Starting point is 00:07:37 They had some very good songwriting that sounds like a lot of the songwriting around that time. They made some really good albums. I think, I think there's like an interesting similarity in that they both started in like a more straightforward, like,
Starting point is 00:07:54 or like expected with albums that like sounded a little bit more like the shit that was around them. And like their style was like a little bit more mainstream and then they kind of slowly by slowly got weirder and weirder um and got better and better as they did um but yeah whatever i mean i don't know you can't look don't come you can't this is these aren't comparable yes it's it's him and i at quem and I, all fucking day. And you can tell whoever you need to about that.
Starting point is 00:08:31 So good. Do you hold out hope for an Andre solo album, do you think? Oh, every day. Yeah. Every day. I hope he can find some inspiration to make an album.
Starting point is 00:08:45 Absolutely. Is it inspiration? Do you think he's just like, why bother? Yeah, I guess that would be inspiration. I mean, just like in the just general, I want him to feel compelled to enter the booth and give us something. But you know, if not, everything that's there is also satisfactory.
Starting point is 00:09:02 So I'm not going to complain. Satisfactory. He's just so unique in that it's at he's the most conversational and also like brilliant uh rapper it's it's amazing i wish we had more but i mean i'll take like a weird uh you know george harrison on acid phase of andre 3000 oh hell yeah like whatever that comes like even if like get religion man get religion don't feel tethered to hip-hop like if you want to do some other shit i'm i'm here for i'm here for everything please hey uh is a weirder song than i gave it credit for at the time that's in my kids uh playlist rotation and like there's like this weird like
Starting point is 00:09:43 like going in the background that like sounds like a weird like uh video game sound uh sound effect like taking place throughout the course of the of the song but um have you heard that one hey yeah no i'll have to check that out that's from andrew three hundred anders three anders 300 yeah one of the best to ever do it uh and big boy's solo album uh his first solo album that's so good yeah and he's and he stays just working and yeah giving us good stuff but you know and not to no shade to to big boy but i'm also curious andre are you out there and every time he shows up it'd be one thing if he just like totally cut cut off like stop rapping but like if every time he has a feature on a song he sounds still like so great yeah and
Starting point is 00:10:41 now he's just like in i feel like he's in a bill murray phase where now i just see anecdotes about andre 3000 right like places like oh he came to this like he he was in this uber or like he was like saw this person busking and performed next to them and then vanished into the shadows yeah it's not a bad way to be there's an it live as a legend live as a mythical figure yeah um you know don't but don't be like the weird bill murray thing where it's just clear It's not a bad way to be. There's an itch to live as a legend, live as a mythical figure. Yeah, but don't be like the weird Bill Murray thing where it's just clear like you're lonely. You know? I'll do your dishes.
Starting point is 00:11:18 It's like, no, sir, just go do something else, please. Leave me alone. Thank you, though, for Ghostbusters. You know, thank you. All right, all right. I can pour some drinks. You know, I went to bartending school. sir it's really not we're good we are all right hey i got some dude bill if you don't leave i'm gonna fucking i'm gonna have to fuck you up i'm sorry just get the fuck out dude i don't know how else to say this to your fucking ass get the fuck out
Starting point is 00:11:40 well guess who bill get the fuck that's what he did to people sometimes he would hold his hand over their eyes and then they'd turn around and he'd be like and no one's ever gonna believe you and then like yeah sure disappear now have to kill you and hide uh and finally spider-man spider-man is trending uh he's coming to netflix miles what that means i don't know man show like a netflix original no no his uh i think the like homecoming uh series of spider-man uh are going to netflix instead of disney plus um oh yeah oh because it they were that franchise sony and around yeah that franchise had its own its own thing going on um i mean thank god because not only not only is netflix getting uh spider-man but also the jumanji franchise finally thank you you could take that fucking disney did you watch any of the new jumanjis jumanji i saw the
Starting point is 00:12:54 it says you pronounce it differently yeah it's still spelled the same same uh i the same. Same. I've seen the first generation with David Alan Greer, Robin Williams, and Kirsten Dunst. And I've also seen the first version with The Rock and all that on an airplane, but not the second one. And the Rock one, that's like video game based, right? Like they're taking it to the they got new their characters and shit i don't know like it it just seems more like it has not i i prefer like the vibe of the first one um but you know that it's a fun fun movie to watch you know easy easy airplane viewing so i'm not mad um. The actress from the original Jumanji
Starting point is 00:13:47 who played the younger, one of the younger girls, the main young girl, I believe, Laura Bundy, went to my high school. And that was the, I think regionally, like you probably went to school with five actors. I literally went to school with Kirsten Dunst. So Jack, I'm dunking on you right now.
Starting point is 00:14:09 Oh, of course. But like that was such a big deal in Lexington, Kentucky. Wait, so which character is that? She was the, I think the young version of the... Young Sarah, which is Bonnienie hunt bonnie hunt yes oh so she's in a flashback scene but she's in like a couple scenes yeah yeah okay no no no shade at laura bell bundy as i look at her and she showed that movie or we showed that movie at like some event like that she was at i think what do you mean i think i might be conflating memories i feel like there was like a she ran uh cross country with us and there was like a cross
Starting point is 00:14:54 country party where they showed jumanji which would be very weird but uh you know that's damn she was in a she was in an episode of strangersangers with Candy, too? Look at you. Look at you, Laura Bundy. Working with Amy Sedaris. Man, she was in Dreamgirls? Okay, Tiffany Bell Bundy, or what's her name? Laura Bell Bundy. Laura.
Starting point is 00:15:16 Laura Bundy. But that is the closest. That was my brush with stardom, was running cross-country with Laura Bundy. Very nice young woman. Hell yeah. Hell yeah, dog. All right.
Starting point is 00:15:28 Well, those are the things that are trending. Spider. Yeah. So Spider-Man is coming to Netflix in 2022. Just for people who actually listen to this show for information. Yeah. Rather than our obscure.
Starting point is 00:15:41 I haven't seen any of those. Have you seen for stories of who we went to school with? Hey, Laura Bundy, she's shedding a tear right now because I know she's Zeitgang. Oh, for sure. Yeah, yeah. Wait, what was, speaking of people shedding a tear right now, what was Kristen Dunst like in high school? Not there? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:01 She went to my elementary school. Yeah, she was a huge star already, right? Yeah, dude, she came to my school like on the heels of interview with the vampire right right so and at that point like you know the olsen twins went to my elementary school too never there damn never there you're never never never never there few people realize that song was written about the Olsen twins. Olsen twins. By me, it's my perspective being like, these kids aren't at school ever because they're
Starting point is 00:16:32 in production? The heck? Yeah. The heck? The heck? Anyways, guys, that is what's trending. We are back tomorrow with the whole last episode of the show. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:44 And until then, be kind to each other. Be kind to yourselves. Wear a mask and don't do nothing about white supremacy. We'll talk to you all then. Bye. Bye. Kay hasn't heard from her sister in seven years. I have a proposal for you.
Starting point is 00:17:01 Come up here and document my project. All you need to do is record everything like you always do. What was that? That was live audio of a woman's nightmare. What happens when a professional football player's career ends and the applause fades and the screaming fans move on? I am going to share my journey of how I went from Christianity to now a Hebrew Israelite. For some former NFL players, a new faith provides answers. You mix homesteading with guns and church. Voila! You got straight away.
