You guys have been making fun of me for years,
for two years now, because on my home at,
too many times for me to deliver without shame,
I'm telling
you that there is a Tampa Bay Rays game on over the last couple of seasons and
something that happened in the Rays game yesterday a very simple nothing that I
see happening throughout baseball all the time is somebody let off with a
triple and then because Wheeler was pitching
and he's a young candidate,
the next three guys struck out.
And this makes people like Chipper Jones crazy
and it makes me crazy when my baseball heroes
sound like old men yelling at clouds
when they're complaining about what baseball is today.
So let me just play the sound for you
because Jeremy came in here today
and as someone who loves baseball the way Jeremy does,
it must be very frustrating
that a Thursday night football game dwarfs everything.
Oh, show, hey, Mike, go 50-50.
Oh, couple of no hitters broken up in the ninth.
Nothing matters except the second quarter tonight.
And if you like baseball, it's sort of annoying to see some of this stuff
happened
and chipper jones is giving voice to something baseball's always done this i
remember scott boris used to complain about all the time whenever they were
work stoppages he was saying it's the only business i know where basically the
owner of the business kicks the can all over the grocery store denset bruises it
then puts it back up on the shelf and asks you to buy it. Baseball loves to complain about baseball,
and here's one of my baseball heroes telling you that baseball today, the way that it's
played kind of sucks.
Working with the Braves for the last couple years, it's very frustrating. It is very frustrating. I can't stand giving away outs, I can't
stand strikeouts, I can't deal with guy on third less than two outs
not hitting a ground ball at a shortstop or second base to get that run in. I
can't stand you know every once in a while, not laying down a bunt for your best hitters.
All these things that really help you accumulate numbers,
they don't care.
100 RBIs, so what?
I mean, I wanna hit 40 dingers.
This is truly a Chicks Dig the long ball kind of era.
I think having worked with Alex Anthopoulos, they want slug,
and they want guys who get on base at a high clip.
But they don't promote enough, I think,
the getting on base part. In order to score runs to score runs, you gotta get those guys on base.
You know, the Braves, and you've seen it this year, you know, last year it was like 307
homers.
I mean, it was ridiculous.
It's hard to watch.
I don't watch as much as I want to because I find myself throwing foot flops at the TV and you know,
just being frustrated and I'm too old to do that.
Jeremy came in here today legitimately enthusiastic
like a puppy wanting to talk about can you believe a guy
got two no hitters broken up on him in the ninth
with a home run.
No one cared,awning indifference
Stretching out all over the office in his first 11 starts Jeremy was just telling everybody
Two almost no hitters into the ninth inning in his first 11 starts
I was like Jeremy he could have had two no hitters in his first 11 starts
And I don't know what it would have done for me and you'll thought it's a stolen riot
You you also said I don't care about actual no hitters
How about you stop talking to me about the almost no-hitters? And he poured coffee on his head, which was extra
Because you're wearing all your dolphin gear. You're wearing all these up. You're wearing all of your finest dolphin materials
This is but this passes for a sports tuxedo for you. Does it not mean the video teams tell me I look great today
I look alive. we look good.
Dolphins, Bills, at least it's not the Panthers shirt.
Mike and this, I hate that guy.
You don't care about 124 straight plate appearances
without a strikeout for Luis Arias?
The fourth longest streak in this century?
He's in San Diego?
No, no one cares?
The Panthers group chat has been mocking me relentlessly
for just wearing the Panthers championship shirt too much
Oh, Tony's gonna be 50-50 master texted me the other master just Fazi and texted me
He's like hey am I missing a bit is Chris Cody punished does he have to wear the same shirt every time coming from master
Coming from master who's worn that arsenal kit the same one for like seven straight years
They won the Stanley Cup though. Yeah, but.
Thank you Roy.
Does he have more than one of the shirts?
He does wear that shirt a lot.
It's either that or the Bobbery.
And I've just described 25% of his summer wardrobe.
50 homers, 50 stolen bases,
and he might not even win the MVP.
Are you scared Chris Cody tonight?
Your level, this is an interesting thing, okay?
Because I've told you before,
the Cody family, Chris Cody finishes bronze medalist in caring about the Dolphins. His
father and his mother care about this team for longer and more than he does and he cares
about it plenty. This is not an indictment about how he feels about it this is being in his house as a source of the income
for forty years this team daddy's living daddy's clicks are made with this team
in a marlins columns it ain't kane's columns is not he comes in a panther
column
it's dolphin columns
and the dolphins have a team
that this century has mattered less than almost all the others because all the others have made the playoffs and won a game in the
playoffs. Detroit is no longer what it used to be. The Dolphins who used to be
the winningest franchise in all of sports when it was Shula and Marino not
football all of sports gave away all of that and now a game tonight matters in your
hometown and the team that's been in your way the last five years and in
Kansas City it's this one you ain't at Kansas City's level you got to get to
this one's level before you can get to Kansas City's level and they have been
close but their quarterback has been seen as better than your quarterback the entire
time you go into tonight's game, hopeful or fearful?
I'm feeling good.
I'm not going to let you, you've kind of scared me.
That thing you just did for the last minute made me feel way more scared about the game
than I was already feeling.
It's week two.
I'm going to keep the right perspective here.
If we lose this game, I'm not gonna say the world is ending.
But like I said earlier in the show,
I do think that the Dolphins need to have some feel good
when we play against good teams.
I think if we start this early in the year with this,
we can't beat the good teams,
I just think it could snowball.
If you chop it at the legs here,
and now you have the rest of the season,
you could say, but we beat the Bills, that's a good team.
Chris, in the last couple of years, I do not know a victory, maybe rest of the season, you could say, but we beat, we beat the Bills. That's a good team. Chris, in the last couple of years,
I do not know a victory, maybe Baltimore on the road,
that felt better than just magnifying glass,
frying the Bills on their sideline
so that Stefan Diggs would say
it's the most tired he's ever been after a game.
That victory over Buffalo here represents,
supposed to represent, one of the more seismic victories
they've had over the last five years.
It's just not saying much because they don't win
many meaningful games in the last 20 years.
You wanna know how sad, how few games we have?
Jeremy has the top five Dolphins home games.
Is it home wins?
No, just Dolphins wins of my lifetime.
This is gonna be sad.
These are the top five Dolphins feelings I've had of my lifetime this is gonna be the top five
Dolphins feelings I've had in my lifetime so number five is that game you just referenced Dan with Josh Allen through for 400 yards and Almost died of a heatstroke and then
Number four the Dolphins score 70 points against the Denver Broncos that was fun. I was there. I was really fun
Come on. That was great. Are all these things gonna be from the last three years number three the 21 point comeback against the Baltimore Ravens were to it
Through for 470 yards and they won 42 38
I think I came in after that game and at that time I was like this is the best the dog was the best I'd ever
Felt ever like I don't get this a lot
This was when we were like now we've had a good offense for a few years now at the beginning of this
That like the regular season game where we beat the Ravens
felt like the Super Bowl.
Now we're kind of like, now I'm like,
hey, get me to the playoffs.
I'm a different guy now.
But that was new then.
Number two was also against the Ravens,
but this was back in 2007 when they broke
their winless season with an overtime win
against Baltimore, Greg Camerio, 64 yard touchdown.
And number one, of course, the debut of the
Wildcat.
That's the best I've ever felt watching Dolan's dad.
A truly pathetic list.
Let me go through some of the sports history here in South Florida so that you understand
the context of what is happening tonight.
The Bills have been a national laughing stock as losers for a really long time because they
would get close to the Super Bowl and then lose the super bowl in a variety of ways josh allen has made
buffalo regionally feel about football like it has not in a long time not since
buffalo was literally trampling tom oliver dotty the defensive coordinator
on the sidelines because there man thomas and jim kelly were always making
it to the super bowl
over the half a team the dolphinsphins had with Marino.
They had an offense.
They did not have a defense.
Now they're supposed to have both.
This is supposed to be the most hope I've had in 25 years
around a Dolphin team being close.
And it's in a rivalry that is a legitimate rivalry
where Buffalo is ahead of you for the last five years and really if we think
about it for the last 25 years because even when the Bills were a laughing
stock they were trampling you they were trampling the Dolphins to get to those
Super Bowls they were losing they were trampling Marino and Don Shula to get
to the Super Bowls they were losing I was thinking about Jeremy's list and it felt incomplete.
It felt like there was something missing.
I turned around and I asked him,
what about the Miami Miracle?
Did you mention the Patriots game?
Oh, the Gronk game.
Major omission.
That's on me, guys.
My bad.
All right, go sit in the penalty box.
Get out of here.
I was next to Drew Rosenhouse for that game on the sidelines.
No, nobody cares.
He was jumping up and down.
Yeah, nobody cares.
You didn't even mention.
It's on me.
We've got a major penalty five minutes derailing
You refer to it as the grunt game too just because he stumbled at the goal line and on on it ended on a
On a kick return for a safety laterals for a touchdown last line of defense
Always fast return for a touchdown? Or laterals for a touchdown? Last line of defense. He was just like, I got this guy. Oh, he's fast.
That's exactly.
I got the angle, oh no, there he goes.
That's exactly how, he was at the five yard line.
I want a Pablo Torre finds out on how the decision
was made by the genius of our times to put Gronk
at the five yard line because that wasn't gonna get juke'd
in the last five yard.
I think the answer's all that interesting.
He's tall.
He's really tall, knock it down.
Knock it down, he's tall.
Tony did give you though his inner monologue.
It hadn't accounted for the laterals
and Gronk's real time realization,
oh no, Drake is fast.
He's like, all right, I'm here.
No, lateral, okay.
Oh my God, oh my God, oh all right, I'm here. No, lateral, okay. Oh, I got him, I got him, I got him, oh!
I'm too big.
These people cut very fast.
I'm not really a tackler.
I was back here to knock down a hill, Mary.
Belichick loved being asked about that after the game.
What's the logic in having a tall mucket down?
The logic is very tall.
I mentioned yesterday that the Manning cast with Belichick did its worst rating since the Manning cast started.
I have not consumed much Belichick content. How has it been the first couple of weeks of the season?
Strategically, it is super interesting to me that Bill Belichick, the coach of our times,
really has a management economy around him to make sure his voice stays everywhere around the game.
I don't know if you guys read the Vanada story
on ESPN.com about Bob Kraft,
but I urge you to do so for a number of different reasons.
One, it suggests that Bob Kraft,
through the Apple documentary, through a book,
is trying to sort of influence both how he is seen
and how much control he actually had over bella check and brady
but furthermore i hadn't given this any thought before reading about it bob
craft badly wants to get into the hall of fame before he dies
and jerry jones is in the hall of fame
they don't like each other jerry jones like
evidently that bob craft is like mystified. That guy can't get out of
his divisional round. Like how is he in the Hall of Fame? And I've won more than anybody and they're
not giving me my, my due as a Hall of Famer. And what's being held against him is evidently
the cheating combined with the massage parlor is thrown in there in the reporting combined with
Jared Jones doesn't like him and is more powerful than him and so the owners can sort of block the
way you get into the hall of fame. I thought it was super interesting 80 year olds behaving like
high schoolers and in keeping with what happened earlier in the show, these people don't root for each other.
Like none of these people root for each other.
Greenie is indeed pumping a fist
when someone else stumbles over a line.
And the pettiness, man.
He's really gonna have to die
for them to go in there all of aing.
It's crazy.
Yeah, I think Belichick's been nicer than you would imagine.
I guess football was a misery to him or at least talking to the meeting when he was at football coach was a misery to him But he's I mean, he's not super charismatic, but he's a lot kinder and
Easier to like interesting though. Never mind. I don't need charisma for me. Can you teach me something? I gotta be honest
I haven't really consumed much of him or Tom Brady or anything.
He gives a lot of energy, but I'm with you, Dan.
I thought I would get more of like,
holy crap, Belichick is speaking right now.
It's more of just, I'm impressed with his energy,
but I'm not getting a lot of like,
oh, this is great analysis.
I've seen Saban, especially with
the international break in soccer,
I was able to watch Saban more, and I'm enjoying Saban.
I wish people would push back on him a little bit, but I'm enjoying Saban. I wish people would push back on him a little bit,
but I'm enjoying Saban.
I didn't really hear any Tom Brady
because I was straight up watching NASCAR.
Mike, you know what I wish,
and I know that McAfee hugs Saban
and they will try to thaw him over the course of this season,
but something that I've always run into in sports
that has bothered me, broadcasters in general are so reverent filled and
afraid of the great coach
That they still call him coach when he's in his late
70s or 80s and you're a little more afraid to be your maximum self the way you would
Jocularly with a peer. I don't think do you you think that's it? I just think that they're just coach.
I mean, it's a respect factor, Dan.
It's not you're scared of them.
I would call my PE teacher coach today if I saw him.
It's not because I'm good.
I'm saying it's all of it, Mike.
Nick Saban gets onto the set of college game day
and everyone there knows that he's been a leader
all his life.
Everyone there knows what the resume is before it is that he's been a leader all his life. Everyone there knows what the resume is
before it is that he gets there.
And chemistry does not arrive when he sits down.
There's so much respect for him
that you gotta be careful about how and when you push back.
Especially, it depends on who it is, right?
If you don't put journalists in that setting,
you're not gonna get people who have an ear toward, no, I gotta push back.
It's not just my turn to talk,
I've gotta correct somebody on something.
Yeah, I guess, look, you don't have to push Nick Saban
back on the Xs and Os, and no one's gonna know them
better than him on that day,
as he could maybe ask him a question
and see what his response is.
I meant more towards the NCAA thing
that really bothered me.
What other jobs out there are you always referred to
as the job, even after you're kind of done?
Like Doc? President?
Yeah, president, Doc.
Doc is a good one.
Does chef?
Yeah, chef.
If I'm not working at a restaurant anymore,
you still call me chef?
Yeah, yeah chef. Professor.
Yes, chef.
Professor.
Is that it?
Does that, so Doc, you get Doc in retirement? What's up in retirement? Doc still gets Doc. Doc lives forever.
Coach definitely, I've seen it. You know where I see it? This is why I will tell you when you talk
about pushback, one of the places that it became obvious to me, the respect ends up being too large
is when I see Amin talking to Stan Van Gundy.
Amin who came up through a pipeline where he absolutely
learned from a lot of people, but he knows that Stan
climbed higher in the place where Amin dreamt.
And so Amin is a little more respectful with Stan
just based on what Stan's pedigree is.
And it ain't Saban's.
Like Saban's pedigree went and it ain't Saban's like Saban's pedigree went man
Saban's been the most important room in every room he's walked into for the last
15 years most important person in every room yeah sorry ha I mean he did walk
into the Supreme Court like judge does judge your honor yeah anyone in the Judge? Does Judge have the same name as him? Judge, Judge, Judge. Your Honor, yeah.
Is anyone in the military maybe?
Lieutenant, Corporal?
How many rooms do you think Sabin has walked into in his life?
Where, is it Supreme Court rooms, political rooms,
any rooms where he feels like he's not the most important person there
because everyone's kissing his ass?
Yeah, a handful of times.
He won a lot of championships, so he probably went to the White House a couple of times.
Definitely more important than Ted Cruz.
I have seen a whole lot of important people
turn into fawning adolescents around sports heroes
and sports winners.
The idea that someone has some secret formula
on how to correctly lead people into excellence
is something that's respected by every field.
I felt his presence when I when I spoke to him. I spoke to him, Game Day was at
the ACC Championship and I found myself having to apologize for all the shows
that we did to him directly to his face. He was wearing a red blazer.
Get for me please the sound of Nick Castellanos talking about he got hit with a baseball.
You heard me say a couple of days ago because i really do want to cover baseball better this has
been a fun season in the playoffs in the time before the playoffs right before
the playoffs is going to be a great deal of fun and
i
don't agree with chipper jones
that the game's not watchable it's
that all the changes they've made almost all of them are great changes to speed up the game
But the distortion of the power does make it a game that I don't
Recognize from ten years ago like when it when I'm watching
Tampa's plate discipline has been great for two years
They can't get a runner home from third with no outs because they're just gonna all strike out. You're still locked in huh?
You're still watching Rays baseball.
I'm sitting there watching.
How's the season going?
I mean they're mediocre.
So you're still following them even if they're just like, you're just a Rays guy now.
Well I just, I like.
They're your second team because they're on the, or as Sen.
I like watching the way they develop young players
who have great plate discipline.
So boring.
On coupons and in the bargain bins
of trying to win against these.
You like it there, but not here.
Well, I like it, I'll tell you why I like it there.
You guys having a nerd off what's happening?
Well, I'm gonna correct Jeremy on this
because it's just bullshit what's happening around here.
No, the Rays do it correctly.
What the Marlins do is just what the Astros do is yeah,
you can make the playoffs for seven straight years
if you lose 120 games and rebuild it again and again.
The Rays have done the building of this
in a way that has been correct.
The Marlins have just continually just blown it up.
But have you seen Connor Norby, Dan?
Have you seen Connor Norby?
I saw that he ended the game yesterday by grounding out.
Most extra base hits in a debut of 18 games
since anyone since Shohei Otani.
Jeremy, make this make sense to me.
It's just system's so bad, Dan,
you're like, hey, grounded out.
Was he not a prospect?
He was a top prospect in the Orioles.
Trevor Rogers?
What were the Orioles thinking?
Is Trevor Rogers better than he's been with the Marlins?
They were desperate for pitching.
They were desperate for pitching and he was okay.
I can't believe that they would give up
a top prospect for Trevor Rogers.
They have so many of them.
That's insane to me.
They have more than anybody.
Let's play this Castellanos sound though,
because, and forgive me, I got it wrong, it wasn't Norby who grounded out, it was another Marlin. insane to me they have more than anybody out let's play this cast a yano sound though because
and forgive me i got it wrong wasn't norby who grounded out it was another
uh... marlin
and norby didn't do anything in the night then when they needed him to
against the pirate as a character
uh... let's play cast a yano's here though talking about something that i
believe a place a plane in the sport
which is the hitters now know that the pitchers i mean one of the many changes
in the sport that's interesting to me is you should see
the second time a starting pitcher goes through a lineup,
how the adjustments are made so that the second time
a pitcher is going through a lineup,
he is appreciably worse than he was the first time.
Big pregame show.
But on top of that, to have these pitchers
all throwing 99 miles an hour,
not caring where it goes, and then just hitting people in the head or hitting
them in the body because they're frustrated about things, here's Castellanos
talking about it.
I was, I got into the box, I wasn't even swinging because I
thought there was a chance that that could happen and it happened. I think that he was just
pissed off that his numbers got messed up.
You had a beef with him, right? No, just other than like having a
overwhelming sense that I was about to get drilled. He thought it might happen
just based on the way anyone against him to that point. I can't explain it. You know, just
I know that he had relatively pretty good numbers going into that. And just watching him,
I could see him getting frustrated. And I was digging in. I'm like, I'm going to take this pitch right here to see
if he's around the plate.
And I wasn't anywhere near the plate.
So what was that like when you see the teammates put out
the price come right?
No doubt, because I think that we all kind of got a sense of
what it was, that he was just f----- off, that he got hit
around and his ERA shot through the roof.
Is it frustrating because A was on purpose,
but also B maybe he could have gotten hurt there,
I guess in that situation?
Well, I mean, it was below,
it was like right at my waistline.
So like for that, you know,
I think I probably would have been a little bit more
emotionally triggered if it was up, you know, by my head.
But I think Bryce kind of felt the same thing that I did you know that wasn't even close
I can't keep you guys interested for three minutes in baseball. Well that was three minutes
So we were talking about him. It's a local local guy from down here Homer again on a
Check to see if my alarm was still on in my home brought the AC down though. Thank you for that
I thought you were watching the Mariners what happened they can only pitch and can't hit so you
checked out on them? No I was watching them and then August ended and that was
that you know football. Chris Cody was fun pretending though I like that like oh
no no this hurts so bad but you guess I like having a rooting interest there.
But being a Mariners fan, they're a tortured bunch.
I get to see it.
I feel bad for them.
But no, I don't like baseball anymore.
I liked it a little bit more this year
because they changed some of the rules
and I had a rooting interest.
But I want to, all right, let me really commit to this.
And then you know what?
I still don't like it.
All right, great. Great setup for pitch clock.? I still don't like it. Alright, great.
Great setup for Pitch Clock.
That's next with Jeremy Tashay.
Excellent work.
I know you work for your teammates around here.
I mean, jeez!
You're combining two things I don't like.
I mean, come on!

he said in the break that he's jittery.
This is the Don LeBattar Show with the Stugats.
Welcome to the Pitch Clock.
Here's the pitch, a two-part baseball segment
combining a nostalgic baseball trivia game
and an interview with an expert.
This is the Pitch Clock.
An interesting week in baseball coming up
and here on another episode of the Pitch Clock.
It's Chris Cote with me.
We'll have Adnan Virk as our expert
coming up in just a bit.
Taylor, why don't you introduce today's topic? Today's game is a shootout showdown,
five rounds penalty kick style format. The list today is top 10 oldest baseball stadiums.
You can either give the stadium name or the team. We'll start Chris Cody. Benway. Number one,
We'll start Chris Cody Benway
number one 1912 it opened
All right. So the obvious next one is Wrigley Field
Number two. All right
Camden yards and yards was actually number 10 old ballparks. Now, this is difficult because there's there's a lot of old teams
Let's actually go with the the Mets
Terrible guess. I thought terrible guess.
City Field is one of the newest.
It's not, oh my god, I'm an idiot.
Shea Stadium.
It wasn't just a revamped Shea Stadium.
I feel, wow.
All right, I'm really nervous about that game, Taylor.
I'm nervous about where things are headed,
and we'll see what the results are going to be,
but I don't feel very confident.
We have our expert with us now.
I mentioned it before, it's Adnan Virk. He's an Emmy Award winner for his work with MLB Network,
obviously the host of Cinephile as well, a movie podcast.
Adnan, we were just talking before we started
recording here and you were mentioning
that there is a little bit of a tie-in
to what our trivia game is on stadiums,
which is that PNC Park in Pittsburgh, you
had never been before. You just had your first experience. I'd love to hear about it.
It was extraordinary. So my wife and kids were out of town and you think, okay, what
are you gonna do with that time? It just dawned on me. It was amazing. I was like, Pittsburgh.
I was like, what? Pittsburgh? And I go PNC Park people, whether it's Tim Kirchian or
Buster Olney or whomever say, that's the best park in baseball.
I've never actually been to PNC.
And as I pull up, I swear I'm not overestimating this.
It was out of a film.
When I saw the yellow of the Clemente Bridge,
I was like, hallelujah.
I parked, I walked the bridge, I felt the chills.
I mean, I adore Clemente.
He's obviously one of the great heroes of the sport
and just pictures of him that adorn it.
Walking one way, but then walking the other way, the Alleg and just pictures of him that adorn it, walking one way,
but then walking the other way, the Allegheny River, the way
the water hits it's shimmering, 75 and sunny, incredible.
And I go inside and it's all black and gold.
And I thought it'd be a little more Skeen stuff, to be honest.
Like outside, like, pictures of Brian Reynolds, Andrew McCutcheon.
I go, I was pretty sure I'd see a statue of Paul Skeens.
But if Skeens isn't pitching, it was no big deal.
Mitch Keller pitching that day.
So 12-hour drive round trip to watch Mitch Keller
end up being the Cubs, 18-8 game.
Cubs, unbelievable.
This is something they hadn't done in 110 years.
They stole eight bases, ton of offense.
It's the only place Germany have ever been to.
The seats are better the higher up you go.
Because they got the media pass, sit wherever you want.
So I literally boldly will go, all right, first base line,
10 rows back.
And you'll see that kind of usher look.
And I'm like, I'm not cocky enough to do one of these.
But he can figure out, like, OK, this guy
has some sort of media pass.
He appears to be important.
And I'm watching the game.
It's pretty good.
I'm going, OK, not bad.
I go to the left side.
I'm going, OK, not bad.
I go, let me go high.
Press box, seat 21, just for Clemente.
Want to take a picture?
Love that.
Out of a movie.
Dude, I wasn't sure if it was better
during the day or at night.
You don't even need to watch the game.
I'm just watching the bridge.
I'm watching the Pittsburgh downtown, looking at the boats and the straight at the river.
And at night it's even more picturesque.
And so I didn't want to be prisoner of the moment because I drove home the next day.
I went to the Clinton Museum, by the way, which is amazing, a must have.
But I went home and I go, okay, Kevin Yards is still number one.
And I go, no, like, dude, let's be honest.
Kevin Yards is awesome because of the mix of the retro and the modern.
And San Francisco is wonderful.
My wife's from the Bay Area, so I've
been to a lot of Giants games.
But San Francisco is cold.
In the fifth inning, you have to buy a hoodie.
Like, they make a ton of them out of the fact
that it's freezing.
Pittsburgh was beautiful weather.
I'm telling you right now, as a baseball fan,
which I know you and Taylor are, and our audience,
get to PNC Park.
It's the best park in baseball.
PNC Park is the stadium that I've wanted to go to next.
Camden Yards is my favorite stadium experience I've had.
That's also because it was my first legal beer
was with my dad at Camden Yards,
which is a fun moment for me,
but I can't wait to get out there,
maybe go see a Paul Skeen start at some point.
But at NAN, I wanna start with pitching.
I wanna start with the Cy Young,
because both leading Cy Young candidates
have a chance to do something pretty special.
Tarek Scoobal and Chris Sale,
both could win the pitching triple crown.
That's leading their respective leads
in wins, ERA, and strikeouts.
So for Scoobal, it's 16 wins, 2.53 ERA,
208 strikeouts at the time of this recording.
Sale, 16 wins, 2.38 ERA with 213 strikeouts.
No one has done this since 2011 when it was both Clayton
Kershaw and Justin Verlander.
Both seem like favorites to win this.
I young add in my question to you of Scoobel and Sale,
which has had the better year?
I think Scoobel's had the better year,
but you're totally right, Jeremy,
that the pitching triple crown is still
something which is hallowed and memorable and special.
And we know the whole debate when
McGee had the triple crown and going up against Trout
and by the numbers according to war,
Trout's with the MVP, whereas McGee
was trying to do something which hadn't been done in decades.
And even in the National League, he
hasn't had a triple crown winner since, I believe,
Ducky Medwick back in 1936.
And Ozuna's not going to get there,
but he's still a compelling case.
And in the American League, Judge is third in average first
in home runs, first in RBI.
But it's interesting, among hitters, you and I both,
they go Triple Crown, they go, RBI aren't
valid as they used to be.
Batting average on base percentage is more important.
Home runs, OK, we'll take that.
Whereas pitching Triple Crown, wins have been devalued.
OK, but strikeouts are still strikeouts.
Strikeouts have never been more important in the game.
So if you give me 200 plus Ks, I'm in.
Point is this, these guys both bring it.
And I think Scoobal's stuff is as nasty as anyone.
And watching him pitch for the Tigers,
he's got such a command out there.
He's got a little you know what in him, like a little F to you.
Like he's got like a bit of a mainstream,
which I think helps his swagger.
A lefty that throws hard and throws four different pitches,
he's been amazing for the Tigers.
So I think of the two of them,
he's had the more impressive season,
but Sale's the more impressive story.
The fact that he's gonna win a Scion Award
for the first time at the age of 35 is remarkable.
And he finished runner-up for the Scion back in 2017,
but he's never won one, and Sale's gonna win.
I thought his career was over,
not just like a fourth starter.
I wasn't sure he'd ever make a start again.
And he has been spectacular.
I'm gonna go with Detroit Tigers.
Stee-riiiiike!
Incorrect.
Okay.
I have to admit, I'm already flailing.
I'm starting to flail too.
I'm gonna go with PNC.
The Pittsburgh Pirates.
Stee-riiiiike!
That is another bad guess.
Ah, why am I doing so bad at this?
This is so embarrassing.
This game sucks.
PNC Park opened in 2001.
Ellie Delacruz has a chance to potentially get
to 75 stolen bases for the first time
since Jose Reyes in 2007.
Now, he's a bit of a long shot.
I believe he's at 62 or 63 at the time we're having this conversation, but down the stretch
you never know they might try to get him to that record. Emmanuel Classe looking to become
the sixth pitcher ever with 50 innings or more to have a 0.75 ERA or lower as he's the
closer out in Cleveland. And then Jaren Duran, right now he's tied
for the MLB lead in doubles, and he also leads in triples.
Now the last player to do that was Lou Brock in 1968.
And if he can get to 50 doubles and 15 triples,
he'd be the first to do it since Stan Musial in 1946.
So of Duran, Klaasay, and Ellie Delacruz going for their perspective milestones, which would
be the most impressive in your view?
I think it's class A is truly in a class of zone.
I know.
Hey, I like it.
I'm not using the loser game.
It's on brand for me.
I like that one.
Here's the thing, Jeremy, because in today's game, what's happened, right?
Closures are devalued.
Now they go, who cares?
It's only three outs, but three run lead, big deal.
But Klaus A disproves that theory
because he has been so valuable.
He's been the best closure in the game.
He is unbelievable to watch.
And I know Mason Miller is special for the A's.
I know Hayters has a longer track record with the Astros.
But blessed closure in the game, right now, I take Klaus A.
And if the Guardians make a deep run,
he has to be special for them.
Their bullpen has been excellent.
He's a big part of it, but I just I look at his his endurance.
The fact that he does not miss and he's always available.
And listen, a year ago he had a ton of saves, but also let the
league and blown saves.
That happens.
You'll get 40 saves with blow 11 saves.
Hasn't been the case this year.
Class A has been awesome at.75 ERA.
As we said earlier, Scubal is going to win the sign. I think class A should be a finalist for the sign. year. Klasay has been awesome. A.75 ERA. As we said earlier, Skrub was gonna win the Sion.
I think Klasay should be a finalist for the Sion.
That's how good he's been.
It would be like Eric Gagne in 2003 or 2004.
And what's crazy about Klasay is if you look at his stats
over the first four seasons of his career,
they're right up there with Mariano Rivera.
Like that's how great he's been as a reliever.
I'm like just blanking right now,
but I'm gonna, I have one in my holster.
How much time I got?
Five seconds.
I'm going to go with.
Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, just fill with a little song.
Has the has the shot has not expired.
Rockies.
Not on the list. Rockies were number 12.
We know Otani and Judge are likely to win their MVP awards
even with Lindor and Witt on their heels.
But the NL MVP has two fascinating players at the top.
You got Jackson Merrill in San Diego,
who his splits it at 290 and 820 OPS,
over 20 homers, over 80 RBIs,
and a ton of late game heroics for a team that's needed it
in the wild card chase.
But then you got Paul Skeens,
who we mentioned in the Pittsburgh segment.
Paul Skeens has sort of risen as a face of baseball.
His ERA is just over two, his whip's just under one.
He's been as good as advertised.
So you add in, who is going to win this award,
and who should win this award?
Jackson Merrill is going to win.
Now I checked the latest sites on DraftKings as far as who the favorite is to win Rookie
of the Year and it's Jackson Merrill.
It's not only the fact, as you mentioned, the 820 OPS, but in many ways he's carried
this Padres team when they needed him.
And I think what happened for Skeens Jeremy is he was a supernova his first 10 starts.
And after that, he's still been really good to be clear,
but he's more like five innings, two runs, six Ks.
Still really good, like I'll take it.
Whereas Merrill has kept on ascending.
And I think now Jackson Merrill should win it.
I think Jackson Merrill will win it
because he's been so critical with the Padres
and the duration of what he's done.
He's gonna play like 155 games.
Right.
He's only pitched half the season.
So I think that's a part of it as well.
I believe Merrill has five game tying
or game winning home runs in the ninth inning
or later this season.
I'm going to ask you for the greatest strength
in baseball as a unit.
So for example, a team's bullpen,
maybe someone's heart of the order,
a starting rotations one and two.
Ultimately, I'll give you a couple of options
where I give you my right answer.
The Mariners pitching staff is amazing.
They're not going to make the playoff,
but that quintet of pitchers is unbelievable
how special they are.
And all at a relatively cheap cost from them,
all affordable.
Gilbertson All-Star, Kirby I love
because of striker to walk ratio,
Castillo is a former ace, and they got Miller and Wu.
Those guys are awesome.
So when you just said unit, I go,
Mariners starting pitching,
best starting pitching here in the American league.
Love those guys.
When I think of Harley Order, when you mentioned that,
I think of the Yankees, Judge, Soto Stanton.
To me, I'm like, those three guys,
what they can bring to the table is so tough
for an opposing pitcher to mix and match.
But I'm gonna go with the Dodgers lineup
and just the embarrassment of riches.
We saw recently the fact that Otani,
Freeman and Betts all
went back to back to back in any home runs.
And I said to myself, you're never going to see that again.
The fact you've got three MVPs in the order like that
and the potential the Dodgers have to lengthen that lineup.
Like Teosca Hernandez is going to hit 30 home runs.
Max Muncie's got 12 home runs.
Gavin Lux has had a good second half.
You start to look at that lineup and go, dude,
there's seven or eight deep.
So look at that lineup. You're never going to see MVP, MVP, MVP, and a bunch
of other stars. It's awesome.
It's crazy to think that if the Phillies and Dodgers end up facing each other in the NLCS
that you can have that top of the order of Otani, Betts, and Freeman. And yet Kyle Schwaber
is arguably the biggest fear in the first inning as he leads MLB in
first inning leadoff home runs might set the record this season for leadoff home
runs. Adnan, thank you so much for joining us on the pitch clock and alright I
guess we should head back to the finale of of this game. Alright thanks Jeremy
good luck. Okay Jeremy this would be huge for you. I know I feel I'm alright
I feel better that Jeremy sucking at this because yeah, this is okay feels like it should be named an old ballpark
I know I'm trying to see the list. It's easy. Yeah, it's really easy
Easy get out of here in the background ridiculous. I um
Okay, so I'm feeling like there has to be one in the AL Central somewhere.
And so I'm going to guess the Guardians.
That's a good one actually.
Aggressive field, number 11 on the list.
No!
So Chris, Chris you need this.
Oh I just thought of a good one, bam, easy, Dodgers. good one. Bam. Easy Dodgers.
The third oldest stadium.
Of course it is.
Just like, I was like, oh my God.
That's the way for Chris Cody.
This was so embarrassing.
Can we get the rest of the top 10?
I'm like, can I just one more time?
I'm thinking of old franchises,
but then I'm thinking like, oh, the Reds, right?
But Great American Ballpark can't be on there.
That's a relatively new one.
Then you start thinking about the other older franchise do you think about the white side of the
problem sure that that is not on the list white socks would have made it no
the entire top ten so you guys got Royals on this Tigers I meant white
socks the entire top ten lists you guys got Fenway you got Wrigley the top two
you got Dodger Stadium which opened in 1962 Angel Stadium really the Oakland
Coliseum.
Kaufman Stadium with the Royals.
Oh, Kaufman.
Roger Center with the Blue Jays,
opened in 1989.
Tropicana Field with the Rays,
opened in 1990.
I am,
guaranteed great field.
White Sox, opened in 1991,
and then Camden Yards, 1990.
I am so mad right now.
I almost said Tropicana.
Tropicana came to mind,
Kaufman came to mind. A's came to mind. The Tropicana came to mind. Kauffman came to mind.
A's came to mind.
The White Sox came to mind.
I didn't think about the A's.
This is one of the most,
I was embarrassed last week.
It's hard to do worse than what you just did.
Yeah, yeah.
Thanks, Taylor.
