This is the Don LeVittor Show with the StuGuts Podcast. We have missed Mike Schur around here. He's very busy making good content as he always is. Unlike us. That is correct.
Starting point is 00:01:24 Let's, but, but, we did make some good content last segment when this actually happened in real time, Chris Cody reached an octave we did not think that could be reached by Chris Cody while defending himself against a case of being irrational. How irrational? How am I irrational? Did you not hear your voice there? It's been tough to hear I irrational? Did you not hear your voice there?
Starting point is 00:01:45 It's been a tough day for my boy, dude. Did they hear your voice? That is how Chris Cody, and that is how I would imagine irrational would sound if I was creating a show for kids with a cartoon meant to symbolize irrational. How irrational? Yes. Ha.
Starting point is 00:01:59 That's the kind of content we make around here. Mike, thank you for joining us. Were you heartbroken last night? I'm sorry, were you winded? Heartbroken. No, no, my bad. About the Bruins? Were you scared last night as you were watching Sacramento,
Starting point is 00:02:14 your team, your adopted team, before that game, you did not have confidence that they were gonna win that game against Golden State? Light the beam, Dan-o. No Malik Monk, no kevin herder no problem is the sacramento kings dispatch the golden state warriors one eighteen ninety four last night a golden one center keegan murray led the kings are thirty two points including a sparkling eight
Starting point is 00:02:35 of thirteen from three d r fox chipped in twenty four spots are turkey on alice provided a key offensive spark going for fifteen thirty nine tough minutes as the kings at least for one night seem to have rediscovered the high octane offense that made them coach mike brown such a tough out last year but the real story last night and might have been the seeming end of the warriors and as the step career twenty two points clay thompson was held to zero that's right and one of the greatest shooters
Starting point is 00:02:56 in nba history all of ten from the floor all six from three in thirty two minutes did not register a point as the warriors crashed out of the plane tournament thompson course is a free agent at the end of the year. Question marks do remain about his future with the team speaking to reporters after the game. Curry said about Thompson and Draymond Green and I quote, "'I can never see myself not with those two guys.'"
Starting point is 00:03:15 His confusing use of a double negative not withstanding the end of the Splash Brothers dynasty could be upon us time will tell. But what matters now Dan is at the Kings. Live to play at the Pelicans for a chance at the eighth seed in the west. That game is on Thursday night at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans.
Starting point is 00:03:28 For MetalArk Media, this is Mike Schor reporting live from Los Angeles. Dan? I felt like that was artificial intelligence. What's the bid here, funny guy? Like, what are we doing? He's weird. He's reading? ESPN recap.
Starting point is 00:03:39 He's our king's stringer. I'm your Sacramento Kings correspondent filing a report on the game. Right, but it was a little dry. We want, you know, we need takes. We need, you did it. Would you rather, my voice crack and I do something ridiculous like Chris Cody?
Starting point is 00:03:56 Yes. Is that what this is about, entertainment? You're irrational. Yes, just throwing a little of that in there. We don't need- I'm trying to bring some professionalism to this outfit. You hired me as a Sacramento Kings correspondent. They played a big game last night.
Starting point is 00:04:09 I was filing my report. I'm sorry, I won't do it anymore. I won't provide information for the listeners of this show if that's what you want. Here's a little key if you're gonna do a report on the Sacramento Kring's. At the end you have to say meadow, lark, media. It's a long pause.
Starting point is 00:04:24 It's what all the pros do, media. It's a long pause. That's what all the pros do. E-S. P-N. Cringes. All right. Thanks for the notes. Thanks for the notes on my reporting.
Starting point is 00:04:33 Mike, do you agree that the NBA shouldn't be promoting the playoffs until Playoff Jimmy is in? Sure. Yeah, no, you're right. Yeah. That was a- I said promoting it differently. I didn't say not promote it. I said use a different slogan. Wait, you took... This is your actual stance? No, my stance is everyone is just being crazy here and not respecting me. All I'm saying
Starting point is 00:04:56 is the playoff... We're crazy for saying someone that's not in the playoff shouldn't be featured in the playoff promo. Did you see the playoff blank commercial with Tatum? I did. I'm saying that premise is based off playoff blank commercial with Tatum? I did. I'm saying that premise is based off playoff blank. That's playoff Jimmy. How do you have that commercial with that premise?
Starting point is 00:05:11 Obviously you can promote the NBA playoffs. How do you have that slogan used if Jimmy's not in it? They clearly asked him and he said no or something. They wouldn't have done it without asking him. It didn't have any play-in people in it. I'm assuming he was in it and they, since he's in the play-in, were like, we can't have him in it because he's not in the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:05:29 Fair, you're right. So you're saying they shouldn't have run that specific ad unless, until slash, unless he was a part of the actual playoffs. Correct. Is that what you're saying? Thank you for just hearing what I'm saying and not just. He's saying that the goal for them to run this playoff promo without Jimmy Butler.
Starting point is 00:05:44 How dare they continue their playoffs without Jimmy Mike sure I mean I get I kind of see your point, but also he's like the you know that Commercial featured like a lot of guys who were bigger stars than he is in the league So I don't know how you can how many of those guys made it to the final? Shane Gillis Alexander is not a bigger star than Jimmy Baller. Shane Gillis. Always funny when he says that.
Starting point is 00:06:11 It's not fair. Mike Schur has been trying to tell you about Shane Gillis Alexander for a year and a half. A whole lot of people are about to discover him. But let's just go back to last night. Mike Schur, break this down for me. This analysis from Reggie Miller at a pretty important time for the game as a lot of people were listening for his astute breakdown of what to do in this
Starting point is 00:06:32 late game pressurized situation one of the great clutch players of all time there's things that you talk about on the bus as players if he makes the first one yeah you're up three. Do you try to purposely miss the second one knowing that they don't have any time out and they've got to go coast to coast? Because as soon as you miss it, time is going to start as soon as it's touched. Or do you just make them both be up for and game over? These are things that are discussed as. Yeah, that was an insane moment.
Starting point is 00:07:05 That was truly nuts. And like, there are certainly moments where missing a free throw isn't the worst thing in the world for that reason. That's not one of those moments. Like, I think his brain just fritzed out. Because if you hit the free throw, the game ends no matter what. I think he started off meaning to say,
Starting point is 00:07:23 if you miss the first free throw, then do you miss the second? That's what I thought. He was going on and on about it, Dan. That's bad production right there. Someone needs to get in his ear and tell him, Reggie, you're wrong. I think they did at the end. He's staying drenched. You think live on air, good producing would be, hey, you're wrong about this as he's talking. But that's why you have one of the games greatest players in the booth though though because he explains like these are things that they talk about on the bus You don't know what it's like playing between those lines. No one talks about that on the bus. I mean no one does It was bizarre and he I think you're right
Starting point is 00:07:58 I think that he was confusing the situation and thinking if you miss it Do you then miss the second one or something? But how he didn't correct himself or Harlan didn't correct him, something, something should have happened there. Cause they had to end it up. They had no timeouts. The part at the end where he's like,
Starting point is 00:08:12 or do you make it in game over? Yeah. In game over, yeah. I thought that's where the producer arrived. I don't think they should end the game here. I thought the producer told him something right toward the end. Reggie, just tell them you could just make
Starting point is 00:08:24 the two free throws and end the game. When you lay it out like that for me, Reg. Yes. Amin has given the breakdown this way of the Miami Heat on oddball, and I want to get Mike Schur's opinion on all of this because there was no one in the American media more right about what was going to happen
Starting point is 00:08:40 in the Eastern Conference last year than Mike Schur. He got it the most right on how all of last season in the eastern conference was going to end he seems cockier this year he seems less scared this year and here's amin al hassen i guess saying why he should still be scared if anyone should be feeling really good about themselves it should be the miami. And particularly because many of the opponents they'll see are not unfamiliar opponents, right? If they play the Sixers and they beat the Sixers, they get the seventh seed. That means they played the Knicks in the first round. They played them last year. If they lose to the Sixers, but obviously beat the whatever carcass comes out
Starting point is 00:09:21 of Bulls, Bulls Hawks, right? Then they play the Celtics, who they've not only played last year, they played three of the last four years. So it's like, okay. And then as you progress through it, it's like, all of these are familiar foes. Ain't nobody here new or like, oh, we've never seen anything like it before. So if you're the Miami Heat, I think confidence should be there. Having said that, hey, maybe we do this without, you know, a whole lot of drama. Cause it's like people say like, yeah, the elevator broke down and so I had to take the stairs 30 flights up. Like that's great. But no one should say from now on,
Starting point is 00:09:58 I'm only taking the stairs. That doesn't make any sense. Right. The heater, like, you know what? That was fun last year. Let's do it that way again. Where are you on this year? Well, I mean, yeah, nobody's a new opponent in the East. Yes, they have no there's no expansion teams that made the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:10:17 Like, what are you talking about? Every team knows every team in the East. They've all played each other fairly recently. They play each other four times a year. And also the thing that I think is a more salient point about the Heat this year, they're not quite the same team. Now don't get me wrong, I am terrified of them. I will always be terrified of them as long as Jimmy plays for that team. But if you, the reason that I made the prediction I made
Starting point is 00:10:39 last year was because I watched the team game after game after game and they were winning games that they had no business winning and they were winning those games with going 40 for 40 from the line or getting 18 steals and only having four turnovers. They're not quite that team this year. At least they haven't been in the regular season. They weren't as good defensively in my mind in terms of turnovers. They weren't quite as good in those like super close games late in the game, they get the key bucket they need to get, they win by one. Last year they were winning by one or two or three points over and over and over again. They weren't quite that same team this year. So it's not that I don't fear them because I absolutely do,
Starting point is 00:11:25 but they didn't have this like weird pixie dust sprinkled over them for the entire regular season like they did last year. And I think they're in a little bit of trouble only because they're playing, they almost crashed out of the play-in last year. This year they got to go on the road and play Philly and Bede's gonna play and they have not,
Starting point is 00:11:45 the Sixers have been great when Bede plays this year. I think the Sixers oughta win that game. They'll probably beat the Bulls or the Hawks, but I don't think the Celtics with their new roster fear the heat in the way that they might've feared the heat last year. That doesn't mean it's not going six or seven, it's not gonna be sphincter tightening
Starting point is 00:12:04 in the way that it has been in the last three years. But it's not quite the same level of fear that I have. It is a funny thing though to say, given that Drew Holiday is one of those new players. And last time he played Jimmy in the playoffs, we all thought he was gonna quit because he talked about quitting because of what Jimmy was doing
Starting point is 00:12:21 to Drew Holiday in the playoffs. Like he publicly talked about, I not sure I want to be doing this anymore because of how Jimmy dragged me it was uncommon honesty and that's at the center of everything they're doing with the Celtics let's play the stat of the day music so that we can get from Mike Shore a refreshed stat of the day start of the day start of the day and this is the start of the day. Start of the day, start of the day, initiate start of the day. Start of the day, start of the day, initiate start of the day.
Starting point is 00:12:51 Start of the day, start of the day, initiate start of the day. Start of the day, start of the day, initiate start of the day comes courtesy of Sarah Lang's, the greatest living baseball statistician in my mind. Since Barry Bonds left the San Francisco Giants, the Giants have started 18 different opening day left fielders in 18 seasons. The list is wonderful. Are you ready? Here we go.
Starting point is 00:13:37 Oh my God. Starting in 2007, Barry Bonds, Dave Roberts, Fred Lewis, Mark DeRosa, Pat Burrell, Aubrey Huff, Andres Torres, Mike Morse, Nori Aoki, Angel Pagan, Jarrett Parker, Hunter Pence, Connor Joe, Alex Dickerson, Austin Slater, Jock Peterson, Blake Sable, and this year, Michael Conforto. And they had like three world championships in the middle of all of them. Conforto's a giant?
Starting point is 00:14:12 More than that, I believe. And all they did was win the championship again and again that they never did when Bonds was there. Thank you, sure. Good seeing you again. Bye everybody. Dukats here for my friends over at Simply Safe. Springtime is all about fresh air,

This is the Don LeBattard show with the Stugats. It may be a play in, but it feels like the playoffs have started. And I don't know whether I'm gonna be able to lure Tony and Billy over to where the Panthers are, but I hate the first round matchup for the Panthers because I am terrified of everything Tampa Bay Lightning related. Of Kucharov?
Starting point is 00:16:57 Just, I mean. They're done. It was a nice season, but it's over for the Panthers. Well, I'm very- It happens every season. They go in, they play the Lightning, the Lightning beats them, the lightning the lightning beats them the lightning plays possum during the season they go in with their chests out and think oh my god we're gonna be so good this year we won the Biden Cup and then sure enough boom
Starting point is 00:17:15 bounced by the lightnings every single year the lightnings start hiding players under the salary cap they cheat that way why can't the Panthers cheat that's what I don't understand. If the other teams are cheating successfully, why are you not cheating? They made it to the Stanley Cup. Yeah, and what'd they do? And what happened?
Starting point is 00:17:32 They didn't win the Biden Cup this year. First place losers. Right. You say it happens every year, I'm pretty sure you just described one singular year. No, every year. It feels like it happens every year. The Lightning's are foes, I've been hearing
Starting point is 00:17:43 about these Lightning's and the Kucherovs and this and that for so long I'm gonna go Lee whatever that guy's exactly right. Oh, that's another thing. That's another thing He scares me records be damned in the NHL postseason the Stanley Cup playoffs All you need is a hot goalie and guess who always ends up with a hot goalie Well, the pantheon the Panthers did last year until the Knights did they did the Panthers this was the Night Spencer Knight. I've been here about that cat for how long now. Where's even okay? Look we can do the funny talk Yes, because our Charlotte all of the analysis last year was do you have the hot goalie?
Starting point is 00:18:17 Do we have the hot goalie? We have the hot goalie. We have the hot goalie. We have the hot goalie Oh, they have the hot goalie. Okay season over. I don't want to do that with this season because there have been a lot of exciting things to watch over the last month, Stu Gotts, at the high end of that sport where the Rangers and the Bruins and the Panthers are up in the 110s in points because they're playing exceptional hockey and it's dramatic but I want to go back for a second here because I am legitimately when I tell you that's the opponent I least want to see on this Panther season that's built for playoff hockey because I think we're in agreement that Tampa Bay has stolen this state they invented a market and
Starting point is 00:19:02 now the Florida Panthers did everything they did to get Kachuk because of what Tampa did to them when they had a great offensive team and they arrived at the doorstep of that, and they're like, we're playing hockey all wrong at this time of year. But what happened last night in hockey, Stugac, just last night, our beloved Tortorella.
Starting point is 00:19:24 Ah, Torts. Still getting it done in Philadelphia, got just last night our beloved tortorella torts still getting it done in philadelphia leaves the door open for a bench can to get in the playoffs because he poses goalie with three minutes left because he's trying to get an empty net goal to see if they can still get in the playoffs but seconds earlier in detroit a goal had already been scored that eliminated philadelphia and so last night was not the united states of earlier in Detroit a goal had already been scored that eliminated Philadelphia and so last night was not the United States of Tortorella. This is the United States of America! It ain't the United States of Tortorella!
Starting point is 00:19:52 Back-to-back nights the Detroit Red Wings scored an equalizing goal with less than 10 seconds left in regulation to keep their season going. Unfortunately Philadelphia, which got boned on a call, they took a goal off the board. In the first period. In the first period, that was a huge bummer, but Ovechkin finds his way in the playoffs. It was a great chase for the eighth seed in that sport.
Starting point is 00:20:15 But if I may offer a rebuttal to what you and Billy are saying, because it's not without merit, everyone's got post-traumatic stress about the Tampa Bay Lightning and Vasilevsky. We'll say that the last time they matched up, which was two years ago, both teams are pretty different. It's not just Hubertow being gone. Yeah, you have Barkov there and you have Bobrovsky.
Starting point is 00:20:38 Ekblad's supposed to come back in there. But the Florida Panthers made adjustments because of what happened two years ago and because of what happened in the Stanley Cup final last year. They got bigger, they got a little bit more physical. In Tampa, yeah they have Kuturov, yeah they have Sam Coase, yeah they have- Sam Coase is still there? Yeah, this might be the last year. But they they stopped being able to pull the trick that they did with Kuturov still being on their salary cap while they stashed him on the long-term injury list, they had to start paying guys. And guys that used to kill you, like Pilat and Maroon.
Starting point is 00:21:12 Fat Pat. Yeah, and yes, they've had people step up, like Hagel, Burn Point is incredible, Sorelli's having a career year, Paul's having a career year, but Cullorn's gone. And these are guys that were making a difference, and there's a reason why they're not atop the conference anymore.
Starting point is 00:21:30 You're not haunted by just their uniforms being out there. Of course, 88 scare me. And their goalie. Their goalie is really the only one that still scares me. When the way things were shaking out last night, which is improbably, Boston loses to Washington and Ottawa to close their year, Florida claws back from down two-oh
Starting point is 00:21:45 because they were getting their asses handed to them by Toronto, to then get lit afire underneath them by their head coach, Paul Maurice, who did the thing. Remember how the run was sparked last year? He called them a bunch of peas and bees. He did the thing again. Called them a bunch of peas and bees,
Starting point is 00:22:02 and then boom, five unanswered, you win the division. For me, I wanna win the division because I get home ice in the second round. I think it's pretty negligible, the difference between Toronto and Tampa. I think Toronto is like the most due team of all time. They were scarier in terms of Matthews and Marner. They're the scarier team outside of goalie.
Starting point is 00:22:24 Matthews is probably gonna get his 70th goal of the season tonight in the regular season finale for them. He'd be the first player since 1992 to score that number of goals. Marner, Nylander, Tavares, they added toughness with Domi and with Bertuzzi. Bertuzzi owned the Panthers last year. I think, yeah, they have question marks
Starting point is 00:22:43 about their defense and their goalie certainly you don't have those questions about Vasileski but Vasileski hasn't been the same player he was the same player during a stretch where the Panthers were playing their worst hockey and you've forgotten all about that nine spot that the Panthers hung up on them when they were playing Panther hockey. I think if you look at the if you look at the teams this year Tampa Bay has been bullying teams when they've had an advantage special teams Kuturov a special teams Maven but if you look at the teams this year, Tampa Bay has been bullying teams when they've had an advantage. Special teams, Kuturov, a special teams Maven. But if you look at 5v5, the Panthers excel.
Starting point is 00:23:11 So you stay out of the box, you win this series easily. Which we don't do. Yeah. You said you need the hottest goalie, but the hottest goalie ever in the NHL never even won a Stanley Cup. Lundquist lost because of the crings. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:23 Mm-hmm. You just used the word Maven, and I don't know what a maven actually is. The company that bought Sports Illustrated that will haunt me until I die. Because I believe Mike is haunted by the Tampa Bay Lightning. I don't see how you can't be, and he makes a good argument for it, but I'm scared of playoff hockey combined with that team. He's trying to hide it. He's more confident in his team. But he's not wrong. It's just the uniform. It's not that team. He's trying to hide it. He's more confident in his team. But he's not wrong.
Starting point is 00:23:45 It's just the uniform. It's not the team. The Panthers have been better all year. Not that that matters. Well, they've been better than just about everyone. I understand. But I saw three weeks ago Tampa came in here and I saw them spank the Panthers.
Starting point is 00:23:57 I also saw the Panthers out shoot them like crazy and they just got goalied that game. But did you see two weeks prior when they beat the shit out of them? It's a nine to two. I think if you look at the last full year, like our Panther group chat, we're confident against the Lightning.
Starting point is 00:24:11 This is a different team. You're a Panther group chat though. No, I think, no, but dude, you're so wrong on that. We've been terrified of this team forever. And I think there's a different energy where the Panthers, they want the Lightning. They want to end all this narrative that we're talking about.
Starting point is 00:24:25 Another thing that is not really discussed is the fact that traveling to Toronto and having a grueling playoff series with them and doing that back and forth is a lot tougher on the body than a short trip down I-75. Yeah. I can't tell you how much I enjoy as a slogan.
Starting point is 00:24:42 I think, Angel, I want you to make this, let's get the wording on this right I want t-shirts made for this Panther run what could be this Panther run our Panther group chat we're not afraid of the lightning that's a tagline for world Rar3 it is we made t-shirts around in the next week yeah we've made t-shirts the two previous times What I'm telling world war three yes angel I want t-shirts because I already won right now angel Billy This is what I'll do a bet with Billy and on air bet where the loser has to pay something off here, okay?
Starting point is 00:25:18 Not not so tough anymore, but I don't give a shit about this But they'll be right. We could use the content of Billy and Chris having caring bet that the audience is involved in, but. You catch that not so subtle pressure? But Billy doesn't care. I know, I know. I could do the better of Chris if he cares so much.
Starting point is 00:25:38 You like the lighting. You do take the steam out of the content ability of what it would have to have consequences where the audience might care about games that they don't necessarily care about. I'm locked in on the heat right now. Well this is what I want to bring up to the audience because, Stu Gantz. Locked in. I want to do this with some awareness this year, okay? Because last year, unexpectedly,
Starting point is 00:26:04 what happened is we were yawning through eight seats in hockey and basketball and then for two months metal art media sprinting a ten point oh on a treadmill because it's live shows its playoff games it's upset since this is the most fun we've ever had if the heat in panthers advance we've got plans to do a live local our we're going to be doing a lot over the next couple of months, but I also fear that the audience is good and sick of all Panther and Heat talk and would love the content of both
Starting point is 00:26:34 of these teams right out of the gate just get six straight losses. The Panthers lose four to the Lightning, the Heat lose their next two, get them all out of my life. I don't want two months of heat Panthers them being excited, but we've gone from my show expectations at all last year to their expectations now of a with the Miami Heat expecting something that doesn't have a lot of precedent in the sport and Jimmy will do it playoff Jimmy will do it and
Starting point is 00:27:00 be that the path is that in our group chat. I'm not scared of the lightning who've only taken over Florida on your watch as you've had to turn over the roster and if you want to make it this dynasty and if you want to make it about that and not how good the Panthers are 5e5 and How that's what I'm saying how Tampa just totally excels on special teams fine Look at the recent results Matthew Kachuk wasn't on any of those Panthers teams that lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning You can be haunted by Ghost of the Past, I understand. They're the boogie men for you, just the same way that Boston's the boogie men for Toronto, but it's a different team. This Panther team showed you a lot in that run last year. Yeah,
Starting point is 00:27:37 it's the NHL playoffs. Every team, damn near every team that made it is honestly championship good. Outside of Washington, you can make a solid argument for every team in this conference to win Lord Stanley. Yeah it's gonna be tough but guess what Florida is second favorite in the conference now for a f***ing reason. It's gonna be fun. They're good. He's not being irrational. What he's saying can never have been said before in this market. You got to be crazy. No, no, this is no, but this this I can say and it doesn't have a dilution and I'm informed. It doesn't have an argument on the other side. This is absolutely the most championship ready a Florida Panthers team has ever entered the
Starting point is 00:28:22 playoffs and second place isn't particularly close. World Rar 3. We're gonna get that off the ground. World Rar 3, colon, our group chat has a pretty good feeling about this one. As a business owner, you wear many hats. RBC can help with tools to support every role you play in your business. Are the stakes that high that if Angel Reese loses to Kaylan Clark, you need to start over again as a race? Stoogats. I don't know that we have to necessarily start over, but it might have to be, it will be a black people's meeting,
Starting point is 00:29:23 an important one that will be called the next day, where we might have to put some things on the agenda and get it off the table This is the down labor car show with the Stu guards Jamal wants to know the Scotty Shepard conversation Jamal do you have thoughts on Scotty Shepard? You don't want to know that? No, it's funny though, because me and my husband, we had an entire debate about it. Like, what would you do? I was like, okay, if it were me, the Masters is on the line. Right. You know, would you, would you do this like me? Would you say, hey, if it gets to a point where you're about to give labor or give birth, excuse me,
Starting point is 00:30:05 then would you leave the masters? And I told him, you know, and granted, I have a different perspective being a sports journalist, so I feel like this is cheating, but I told him that I would be fine if he just continued to play. I realized that it is, you know, the birth of your child. Theoretically, you know, you wanna,
Starting point is 00:30:24 obviously you wanna be there, the emotional connection and all that and I'm not trying to say your professional responsibilities outweigh your family responsibilities. But this is you know yes you can continue to play golf, but you don't know if you'll ever be at this point again, I mean this this sounds like something that someone would know children was saying you know we have kids like you can see more but you know I think it children would say, but you know, we can have more kids. Like you can see more births.
Starting point is 00:30:46 You know what I'm saying? I think it's one of those things, Jamel. You have to say it just to please your wife, to make her happy. Hey, if she goes into labor, I have the lead. I'm on the 18th at Augusta. I am leaving because that's more important. Family is more important.
Starting point is 00:30:59 We all know he wouldn't leave. I mean, there's no way he's leaving. But here's the thing though. You said something important. You said on the 18th he's even. But here's the thing though, you said something important, you said on the 18th though. But here's a harder decision. What if it's the beginning or like, your first second hole,
Starting point is 00:31:13 you don't know how it's gonna turn out. Because I told him, if I give you permission to do this and to stay at the Masters and it's early in the round, and you lose, bro, like I'm cussing you out because it's like, hey, yo, how you gonna do all that and lose? So to me, it is more pressure if something had happened
Starting point is 00:31:33 at the beginning of the round and you make the decision to stay and then you don't win and you gonna have to hear about that for the rest of our marriage. I was saying that the wife should have had the baby secretly and then shown up on the green when he won on 18 with like a blue like a newborn alien baby and been like, here's our child.
Starting point is 00:31:56 Pregnancy sounds- So I see Jessica just wants ultimate violence. Okay, she's rooting for chaos. Okay, I got it, all right. Pregnancy sounds like the ultimate way to fix sporting events, right? Like you get in, if you're the heavy favorite, everyone's betting on you.
Starting point is 00:32:12 Your purse, your share's gonna be like what, two, three million dollars? You have a bookie come up and you're like, hey, 10 million dollars, your wife fakes goes into labor. No one's gonna question it. All the time, there's labor pains, you go in and it was a false alarm, so you leave, you guarantee you're not gonna win
Starting point is 00:32:28 by withdrawing yourself right before the final round. Everybody gets their money, you get your 10 million. So you just have license to throw out ridiculous hypotheticals. What's that? You just have artistic license to do. I do think that people would be like, hey, wait a second, she's not actually in labor. No, there's people, people. I guess it doesn't matter for this, and say hypothetical, you just throw it out. People go in all the time. License to do I do think that people would be like hey wait a second. She's not actually in labor
Starting point is 00:32:54 No people go into a fake labor pit not fake, but they have false alarms all the time where they go into deliver babies baby in a green jacket Jamal I have a number of different things. I want to tackle with you. Follow-ups? I cannot, no, I don't want to continue. This conversation, Stugats has been trying to get that conversation off the ground since last week. It's the old, it's what stirred that WFAN stuff, an old-timey sports radio conversation. Oh, I love them. Would you leave the Masters if you were about to win? Like, it's just the glory days of sports radio. I called them a liar.
Starting point is 00:33:23 Yes, Stugats did a whole show here in the shadows by himself. It's the show that he wants to do. But one of the things that I have aged out of, I feel like, Jermell, because I felt very alone recently. Kids? In saluting. Yeah. No, Stugats.
Starting point is 00:33:42 I can still have kids. I'm sorry. Yes. Not worth it, though. Yes, I've been have kids. I'm sorry. Yes. Not worth it though. Yes, I've been having my sperm collected recently to check on such a thing. Yes, in order to, yes.
Starting point is 00:33:51 I apologize. Well no, you don't apologize. You did that aggressively and on purpose. There's no, like what you did was just f***ing foul. I love you though. Jamel, I wanted to talk to you about this rap beef stuff that I've fallen out of because you wanted entertainment, everyone wanted entertainment. I was saying, well, that's mature of J. Cole, but nobody wanted hip hop to not do the professional
Starting point is 00:34:15 wrestling thing of go back and forth. And now Rick Ross predictably is doing exactly what Jessica said on the post game show the other day, that he would shameke because of his private plane so let's uh... let's check that out and see what you know things of all of this because i think risk rick ross is too old for this shit too he's my age and he wants in on this beef with these guys and now he's shaming drake for his plane for the day to day the countdown is begun and that all that's just got they gave it to you free
Starting point is 00:34:45 that's a 1978 be safe on that Drizzy be safe on that plane that old mother f***ing god man they all need to pray for Drake and tell him park that old ass plane it's a 1978 the cargo jet people gave it to him free for promo and I ain't hating but be safe if something was to happen to you and I couldn't tell you this be safe anybody getting on the safe man with the seat belts and make sure the oxygen things in there because just for lucky to melt melt it's just they're just gossiping about each other now.
Starting point is 00:35:21 It this is this is a really sad moment in hip hop because I'm thinking about what beefs look like when you know hip hop was coming of age and when I was coming in age through hip hop is that you attack somebody's lyrics, you call them all sorts of names, you know maybe to some degree you attack the fact that they were fake, that they were posing, like there were certain things, go-to buttons that you could hit in hip hop and get somebody. Now obviously we have unfortunately seen
Starting point is 00:35:49 some of these beams play out in real time and have really dangerous consequences. But think about, I think No Vaseline by Ice Cube is the greatest diss track ever. I know a lot of people would say hit them up. Definitely it is one or one, hey, either way. But for me it's no Vaseline. Look at the subject matter that Ice Cube is going after
Starting point is 00:36:09 and that song and compare it to this. This lets you know hip hop done got fancy. Hip hop is too rich. Cause the only thing you could come up with is sliding somebody for their private planes, them using weight loss drugs. Like I never thought that a hip hop beef would involve weight loss drugs and EDLs and surgery and it not involved
Starting point is 00:36:32 the other. A nose job. A nose job. An ab job. We got Drake's mama in the beef. It's like, and none of this has to do with the women. So the next time a man want to go off and talk about how women are emotional, I'm just gonna point to this and be like, really? Because I you know, what can
Starting point is 00:36:47 already be can be a Nikki got beat. They got beat. Okay, they they come in at each other hard. And this is just like, yo, who can get who can be entertained by this? This is so boring. It's just like, okay, you got a bigger house than me. Your private plane is old. The best you could come up with is your private plane is old. Jamel, Jamel. Sit down somewhere. I'll tell you how lame this is. I predicted this as a joke on Monday
Starting point is 00:37:13 as where this beef would go. Here is the clip. Tony, you said Drake has a 747 still, right? Do we know if it's a Boeing? I don't know if it's a Boeing actually. That could be diss track worthy. Oh, your plane is so bad that the parts are coming off because the manufacturer skimped out on later.
Starting point is 00:37:30 Wow, that would be an incredible. The union wasn't strong and your plane is actually probably due for maintenance now. Jessica did it first. I mean, geez. Little legend back, Jessica. Get a Metro beat behind that. You called it, but the other thing too is like,
Starting point is 00:37:47 they waited, they're both too rich. Like this is, to some degree, beef is sort of a hungry man's game, right? It's like you're coming up, you're both going for the same stuff. They got all the stuff. They got platinum records. They got all the toys.
Starting point is 00:38:03 They got all the women. They got all the stuff. And so it all the women They got all the they got all this stuff And so it's like what what are you really gonna say it to humble somebody else who has all this money? There's like nothing you can say like I dare you to write another one for one hit like what are you gonna say to them? So, I don't know. I'm just I'm really disappointed and unfortunately, it just reminds me one that I'm old as well So like you Dan, I didn't even know where this came from, how it started. Why? I mean, I got more intel as it went on, but it just it just seemed very they couldn't even stage it in a way that was entertaining.
Starting point is 00:38:36 You say it's a hungry man's game, but it's harder to be hungry when you're on Ozempic. It is funny what she's saying. What Jamel is saying there about to go from no vaseline to she didn't even mention nose job and ab job like she wasn't even like talking accusations of a $40,000 ab job are amazing. Claiming that someone is 25% body fat but just has the Ricardo Montalban prosthesis surgically placed in her stomach is an amazing claim but to go from no vaseline to that is crazy Jamel. Well you know what, you know what Dan,
Starting point is 00:39:14 I never use this word within the context in which conservatives do. But this is some woke bullshit, I'm not gonna lie. Like this really is, this is what this is right here. Because then you have Drake claiming Rick Ross is racist. What are we talking about here? And he's brought his mother into this beef. I'm like, oh my God.
Starting point is 00:39:36 Just why? Just why? LL Cool J, who destroyed cannabis, is rolling in his grave. Like, what? Como D is like, where do we go wrong with all of this? So this is a disappointing moment. Jamel, I have told you, I've said publicly and privately that I've just sort of, I've been awed by what you've had to endure in our careers.
Starting point is 00:40:01 And every time you come on here, somebody grabs something that you do and it gets thrown into the atmosphere for people to argue about you become sort of a symbol for people love arriving around you and being divisive and yelling about the things that you are saying I wanted your take on what the last seven days of women's basketball has been as both a celebration of a moment arriving that has to be just so earned and emotional and heartfelt to see this last week happen in this sport and then to also notice, yes, for years the best of our players have had to play overseas and
Starting point is 00:40:39 risk in the case of Brittany Greiner, ending up in a most unspeakable of circumstances because America didn't pay them correctly because The wnba has been something that's been hard to run as a business So take me through the history of where the nba has helped here has been a good servant and where we arrived historically last week because you've seen all of it and I I would imagine that no matter how cynical you have arrived in the business of sports and being an old head there had to be so much moving shit in the last week for you of it feeling like arrival for women's sports i mean i would say seventy percent of it has been exhilarating
Starting point is 00:41:17 thirty percent of it has been annoying uh... the exhilarating i was the i guess based off the percentage i gave you is that has outweighed the annoying parts The annoying parts is that you suddenly have this new stream of fans, which is great wonderful for the game It proves the growth it proves there's a product that's viable but they're also a percentage of those new fans that are coming in with very loud and wrong and Frankly silly and stupid opinions because they don't have the context. They don't have the history. They don't understand. And, you know, I think this latest iteration where suddenly Caitlin Clark's four year salary with the WNBA, her four year contract gets posted and people realize she's
Starting point is 00:41:54 making $76,000 for this season. It's like, guys, you know, many times we've had this conversation, like we've had it a lot. Particularly during the last collective bargaining negotiations, the players that are currently in the league have been very outspoken. And every time they were like clockwork, here come an army of people saying, you don't deserve this and you have no value and you suck and nobody watches the NBA, WNBA. But now all of a sudden they want to have a conversation about pay equity, which I find to be pretty entertaining in itself. But I think about the women, especially those who put this league in the position to be in now, where they're starting to see some of the benefits, they're starting to see the exposure,
Starting point is 00:42:34 the media attention, and all of these things that they should have been, that should have been at their disposal for a long time. The women who had to play in empty gyms and really go through some very hard sacrifices to get this to the point that it is now. And I think for them, this is a great moment. And even for me, like as much as sometimes our conversations on here get drowned out by clickbait and people refusing to see the nuance and certain things, I got a great email from retiring Stanford coach Tara Vandervere last night that really she read my piece that I did for the Atlantic.
Starting point is 00:43:08 See now. Yes, we need to look at me Louise. We need to fix the image. Look at me. Yes, you got an email. You got an email about what a hero you are, how amazing you are. That's right I did.
Starting point is 00:43:22 And she loved the piece I did for the Atlantic and in general appreciated by thoughts and commentary on the on the WNBA. But people need to understand this. Yes, when the WNBA started in 1997, it was owned by all of the NBA teams. Now we're at a point now where there's private ownership. I think it's more private ownership now in the WNBA than there is, you know, NBA team owned WNBA franchises. So that is a tremendous sign of growth. Last year's WNBA finals, highest rated finals they've ever had across the board, ratings
Starting point is 00:43:55 were up, I think something like almost 30% for regular season games across all platforms for WNBA games. And so the growth and the potential have been there. And what people, it's funny how people can notice structural inequality and other things, but not when it comes to women in sports, or at least not as readily. Do people understand the whole reason
Starting point is 00:44:17 that women even have access to play at the level that they do in college is because it was federally forced, meaning it was not available. So anytime you have something that had to be federally forced to get people to do, there's going to be built in structural inequality. And they're making the mistake, Dan, they want to compare where the NBA is now, which is a billion dollar industry, to where a 27 year old lead is at this moment that is just now starting to come into its own.
Starting point is 00:44:49 I mean, you guys are older than me. So surely you remember that when the NBA, they went through a period where people considered it to be a disaster where you had guys that were playing, that were working multiple jobs. They were, it was riddled with drug use. People thought it was going to go bankrupt. I mean, before Magic and Larry Bird showed up, I mean, this league was really quite fledgling in many ways. But I find that people want to weaponize sort of the WNBA not being where the NBA is,
Starting point is 00:45:18 or where some other leagues are, and use that to constantly denigrate and prove that these women don't have value. So I'm glad that Caitlin Clark is opening up the conversation. As usual, it's disappointing that a lot of people who don't understand the league, their finances, what they've been through, are immediately using this as an excuse to berate these women who only want
Starting point is 00:45:39 to play professional basketball in front of American audiences. Jermell, good seeing you again. It is at least funny to see that what cannot be said anymore is the joke that's been made too long. Nobody cares, nobody wants to hear about women's basketball. Like that joke dies a painful death at the end here, Stu Gatz.
Starting point is 00:46:00 Is it painful? Well, but that joke has been made, man, for a quarter- I don't know, Stu, does it hurt? For a quarter century to hear Stu got it painful. Well, but that joke has been made man for a quarter. So does it hurt for a quarter century to hear that joke like that that every time nobody stopped talking about women's basketball. Nobody cares like that is irrefutably wrong now like that that one has to go away, but it's still being made. Right. Well, and then let me just add this Dan before, you
Starting point is 00:46:24 know, I get out of here is all the the same people who are outraged by this, you know, the best way you can channel your outrage is that you can buy the WNBA season ticket package. That's, you know, if you have a WNBA team that's near your, you know, near where you live, you can, you know, watch, pay for the the cable package, pay for the league pass at the WNBA games. You can buy merchandise. You can do things to change this narrative that if you really think these women deserve more,
Starting point is 00:46:53 the best way you can show it is also by supporting them. It's totally in your hand. And by the way, let me just add one of my other favorite little arguments about this entire kerfuffle, if you will, about the salaries is how so many men on social media are blaming women for the reason why this league isn't more successful. And granted, it is true that there are more men that watch women's basketball than there are women. But again, it's amazing how they don't recognize the structural inequality. So the gatekeepers for resources, for investment, for setup have all been men.
Starting point is 00:47:31 But somehow it's the women's fault for not supporting other women. The reason why there's not the WABA is not on the same level as the NBA at the 27th year. That is correct. That is correct. That is stop blaming the men. It is the fault of the women. It is always the fault of the women. It is the fault of the women. It is always the fault of the women. It is the fault of the women. Now it is the fault of the women for letting the men
Starting point is 00:47:48 be in charge. It is the fault of the women for letting the men be in charge. You are you are fools fools for letting us be in charge. It is the fault of the women. Thank you. I'm glad we learned finally learned something in one of these damn Jamal Hill Hill segments. Finally, the truth is spoken around here. It is the fault of the women for allowing the men to be in charge.
