Starting point is 00:00:00 You're listening to Giraffe King's Network. Jacob's thing is mystery podcasts. He loves to go to who done it. And when it comes to McDonald's, his thing is finding the exact right moment to steal a McNugget from his friend Sarah's tray when she's not looking. At McDonald's, our thing is quality ingredients.
Starting point is 00:00:25 Like 100% Canadian-raised seasoned chicken in every chicken we can get. Our thing and Jacob's thing together, it makes for a delicious mischievous game, even when he gets caught in the act of our Sarah. Quality, it'sugat's Podcast. I love that. That is right. It is not. It is not. It's a great question though. Am I crazy for that?
Starting point is 00:01:09 You are wonderful. Don't ask your biggest resident. It's not about push. Don't ever change Tony. It would be better. No. I thought I would have guessed Chris Cody would have guessed that. Honestly.
Starting point is 00:01:23 With no context, Dan. How am I supposed to know? No, the fall. But the fall of Usher is also a documentary you would absolutely watch. Yes. It would be like, is Usher a bad guy? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:01:34 Let's find out. I mean, his name was in the news. But what a comeback with a Super Bowl half time show. I don't know if you guys had started to feel this. The strike finally ended on all parts between writers and actors this week. But I was beginning to feel because of how many times I'd seen that usher advertisement
Starting point is 00:01:59 or that shows advertisement on Netflix, I am reminded by that advertisement, hey, I'm running out of content. I am running out of things I want to watch. They're not making new stuff. And I was, I'm just now beginning to feel it where you go through the channels or you go through your streaming services and all of a sudden, you don't have anything that you want to go to that you trust to be good or quick. You don't have a wide palette.
Starting point is 00:02:24 If you don't want something that's two hours, you want something that's quick and a half hour, I've burned through most of it. I was just now beginning to feel the content drought of this strike. Dan, I'm with you. I'm running out of Columbus. I am almost out of Columbus.
Starting point is 00:02:38 Mike Ryan had the take when the strike started that he was excited about it because selfishly he wanted to get through a ton of shows. I'm still in the middle of my Leslie Neilsen marathon. Oh nice. I mean, I mean, I'm ready for Outer Banks season 4 to come out. I almost. All I have is the Guild of Dage right now.
Starting point is 00:02:56 I can't do period stuff. It's Julian Fellows. Lord Julian Fellows, Dan. I just can't do it. Like my wife wants to drag me into costumes and period pieces and I'm like, I just, I cannot do it. I don't want to. Even with the costumes, you don't want to do it?
Starting point is 00:03:10 Well, I wear the costumes, right, of course. So you'll be seated in the couch wearing the costume watching the Pew Peace. Yeah, I'll often do be dressed, you know, the Renaissance period. The motif. Yes, an elaborate ornate hat. But the other day, I was tempted by the pandaverse
Starting point is 00:03:28 and South Park, but I could not bring myself to add for 11.99 Paramount Plus. I couldn't do it. South Park was calling me. The pandaverse was calling me. And I just simply couldn't put forth the 11.99, but I was close. I was tempted. I was right there.
Starting point is 00:03:47 Yeah, Champions League with that too. You get Syria, Aakris, Wittingham, now the voice, the lead voice of Italy's Rear Mirror Soccer Division. Yeah, I mean, I'm a soccer fan, which means I have to have all these in order to watch the global game. It means I pay $500 a month for entertainment, but included in that was South Park's Pandaverse. And I like what South Park has been doing rather than like the weekly episodes.
Starting point is 00:04:11 They put more of their resources into having kind of like these mini movies when they have something to say and they have something to say about multiverses and Disney and why their movies are so bad. Basically, it's all Kathleen Kennedy's fault. And so like a portal opens up, a portal opens up to a different multiverse Kathleen Kennedy that she's a president of Lucasfilm. And it's the version of her that comes through as Cartman and Cartman's response to any time they're pitching a movie
Starting point is 00:04:43 is put a woman in it and make her gay. And like that's just like the one line that he has for every single movie. Even when a platter of food comes out at a restaurant, he says, take it back. Put a woman in it, make her gay. And so it's kind of one note, but at the tray and matley, they like to talk about what's going on. And I know everything gets politicized, but they make tray and matley, they like to talk about what's going on. And I know everything gets politicized, but they make, they're equal opportunity skewers when it comes to this. The joke that they've put too many gay women in Marvel movies, and that's why
Starting point is 00:05:17 the movies aren't good anymore. The joke is that they, that what they take issue with is why all Disney movies are bad. They're like, well, it's become the Pandroverse and all these studios are just pandering and putting stories aside and just putting this random algorithm of stuff to appeal to people. That's their take on it. And they found Kathleen Kennedy to be the main foil of it all.
Starting point is 00:05:42 But the funniest part or the actual layered element of it is that now accounts like end-wokeness on Twitter are like, see, Cartman gets it. Yeah, obviously that's not what they're trying. What has become is people totally missing a kind of like Ken in Barbie where he's become a hero of sorts to a certain people that they're poking fun at,
Starting point is 00:06:06 is if conservatives think that Matt Stone and Trey Parker are on their side, I think they have it a little twisted, but- So it's not about pandas? Oh, man. This happened to us this week with the Aaron Rodger story that when you put your toes in any of these waters and make art in this particular culture that we live in for creativity, you're going to get a lot of things that spring forth that are a magical kind of silly because people want to argue about all of these things.
Starting point is 00:06:36 So their family dynasty was fueled by greed, power, and wealth decades later, their force to face the consequences that have set their fate. Not about usher. I don't want to get to Confession's part two. The name of the show is the House of Oshar, correct? You can see how that could be misconstrued for Oshar has a house. Oh, she made the House of Gucci about Gucci, Maine.
Starting point is 00:06:57 So... This could be, this could be, yes, one of these down... downfall stories it's a document or tony will absolutely watch that the documentary he thinks it is i watched issue one that he would watch which is the fall of us you go ahead and tell me that whole story fall of the house of us you tell me more about this house of us here but you're
Starting point is 00:07:18 gonna be very disappointed let's make it clear the fall of the house of us here is not a documentary this is a scary show with lots of death and daggers and blood and stuff like that i'm still back in on that though i want to find out what happened to the pandas let's go you got to pay eleven ninety nine on paramount plus i got a side for you to find out let's go let's go to the bucket of death Duh-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du than helmet of life. So right now what you see before you is everyone that is going to the bucket. We are going to pay some more penalties next week. And by the way, Tony did not have the golden helmet of life. And that was corrected on our social media platforms at Leopardtard shop. Because he cheated, obviously cheated. And many people have the golden helmet of life. And only one should have it at a time. Who is picking out? Jeremy is going
Starting point is 00:08:22 to pick. Okay, let's go in there and there's nothing good in there. I guess the guys will there's plenty good in there and hopefully you pull out one of KFC's new hot and spicy wings order in eight piece for the new hot and spicy wings for 499 participating KFC today. I'm gonna be wearing a lot of costumes the next few weeks So he's got into twice this season and I'm the one be wearing a lot of costumes the next few weeks. So he's got
Starting point is 00:09:05 in a twice the season and I'm the one that's cheating. Gotcha. Okay. I don't think he's one of those. Like 19 dollars. Unless he's got the right cereal. I don't think you want us to play the film, Tony, that we have. Oh, brother, I wish you could play the film that we have because there's been cheating a foot for a long time with the commissioner, by the way. I got the big apple. Oh, got the Fc playing in the NWSL championship on Saturday. You could take them against O.L. Reign. Allie versus Rapinoe.
Starting point is 00:09:32 I'll get back to you guys. OK, but you're going to keep it. Keep it in the hell if you're going to get back. Yeah, I'm going to keep it. You've got to take a New York team of some sort in any sport. All right. You hold the bucket a little higher. You also need to refresh some of these helmets

They are a three point dog Put it back. Oh, you were taking a little dump on the Steelers earlier now you're afraid. I know Jeremy How much money do you have there? Yeah, Tommy DeVito, I believe, is starting for the Giants. Every time I looked up at the TV, Tommy DeVito was running backwards for 15 yards
Starting point is 00:11:33 and getting sacked. Who's crazy in that game? The cobwears are 16 and a half point favor. It's a lot of point giants, it's a ton. I'm on a hot streak in the bucket. I hope it can. No one is happy for you. No one. Oh, I've got the swap helmet
Starting point is 00:11:49 Okay, let's see what I can offer you 45,000 and $14. Drive hard bargain. I have the Indianapolis Colts I will wait and see what Dan picks the culture at the page. Oh, I will most assuredly be swapping with Probably Jess right now. That's a lead dog. What about Golden Helmet of Life, Lucy? No one, no one pull that this week. You can't do it. No, it has to be, you can only swap on its pull that way. Oh, let's be sure to talk to Billy.

Starting point is 00:13:16 Must win, must win game in Germany for Bellacag. The greatest head football coach of our time. You could have had $45,000 like. I feel better about the Cowboys honestly. Is there anything worse in this bucket than this giant helmet I pulled? No, not this week. No. Micah Parsons might have a hundred sacks.

Starting point is 00:14:32 Who jobs as beetle whenever the cheese is? His new Wondery podcast with Michelle Beetle is called Over the Top, It is available now on all podcasts, platforms, episode one is available now on all podcast platforms episode one is available now Michelle Beadle has had a good amount of success since leaving ESPN and as she is teamed up with Peter Rosenberg to do a show that Is part pop culture part wrestling not what I want to talk to Rosenberg about I want to talk to Rosenberg about La Greca La Greca that steam engine legreca that is bearded menace and rage and turns pink when he gets rabid
Starting point is 00:15:10 let's play some sound for rosenberg on the wonderful legreca why can't we be creative he was right here we could be critical i've lost a lot of it i can't lose respect for somebody i know the guy personally i lost some respect for that's your elder. He's my colleague he's a contemporary I'm sorry no I don't kneel and begs a human being I don't have to bow down and kneel to anybody David get lost go scratch there give me a break they open the door we kicked it down
Starting point is 00:15:42 all right that was then, this is now. Enough already. I'll sit there and bow down to anybody. I like him, but I lost some respect for him. Why would they, let me ask you this. Why would this deity, this God that we got a break to, have to do a stupid little college gimmick to get attention. Why? He's Christ Russo, he's God, he he floats on air Why would he have to do some stupid like guarantees gonna retire and then rescind it immediately like a weakling
Starting point is 00:16:11 Why would he have to do that if he's Christ why? Don LaGrecca just scorching Chris Mad Dog Russo, but he likes him. He does like him It's an important Peter Rosenberg with us. Yes. Yes, that's a key to the sports radio game, correct? Just skewer someone, but say, but I like that guy. And the best part about Don is he really does. I mean, he knows Rousseau, he likes Rousseau. That was one of my favorites though. And I had a hunch when they told me,
Starting point is 00:16:42 and I'm so happy to be here, guys, been a fan for a long time. When they said I was coming out, out I'm like no chance Dan doesn't ask me about LaGrecca out of the gate. The man is a a treasure for all of us to be whole. Is that sound better than this sound because I think this sound is better than that sound? Why would a lion concern himself with the opinion of a sheep he added. The person that's condemning commenting on my performance, what does he do? Flip hot dogs and hamburgers somewhere? Are you kidding me? Are you kidding me? I cut his ass. I would. How dare you? How dare you? These people
Starting point is 00:17:22 pay your salary. They pay it up not just amount of money to park an obnoxious amount of money for PSL's To sit there and watch this pap and you call him hamburger flippers. What you're so much better? I'd rather have a guy that's looking hamburgers block than your piece of garbage ass Who the hell are you to talk to fans like that? You piece of garbage! I hate what players do that. You're not above us. What? Because you happen to play a sport? You make them, you're better than me.
Starting point is 00:17:53 You're better than the people that pay your salary. These giant fans were here before you. And they'll be here after your sorry ass is cut. What a piece of human trash. And I don't want to hear some apology. I don't want to hear, oh, I was taking out a contact. I didn't mean I don't want to hear done. Done. I would cut its fat ass.
Starting point is 00:18:17 Oh, if I'm John Mara, I call him into the office this time. I would. You were a first round pick, but you're not worth anything. You don't talk to our fans that way. You don't talk to me that way. You are out first round pick, but you're not worth anything. You don't talk to our fans that way. You don't talk to me that way. You are out of a job. I, I, you don't. You should boo if you see him in the mall at Willapark. Boo is ass.
Starting point is 00:18:34 If you see him on the DMV, boo him. Don't stop booing him. If he goes to the probable, boo him. If he wins a Super Bowl, boo, sorry ass. Peter, this is an awkward beginning to your, just talking about you and your career, a legendary career in New York. But you sit next to this person and Michael Kaye every day,
Starting point is 00:18:58 and I don't know which job you enjoy more. The one in the morning, where you are a famed hip hop expert or the one in the afternoon where you do traditional sports radio that is I'd cut his ass, I'd cut his fat ass and also go scratch. Or the one with beetle. I mean, or that one. Yeah, thank you. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:19:18 I appreciate that. I love both, but I mean, it's really hard to say, right? Because Michael and Don are both treasures. And I do want to tell you, this is an exclusive for you. This is real life on Friday. We were texting about, the group was texting about some of the things that have been happening on our competitor station in New York.
Starting point is 00:19:38 There was a lot going on and some nasty things were said and we were all kind of grossed out by what was happening. And Don actually said to me, I might have to learn to control myself and not do this anymore because I don't want to be considered like these nasty yo-yos who do it just to do it. And I can tell you from sitting next to him, it's 100% real. Like, Don's not, he's aware he's recording, but he lets the moment become him. It's not a complete put on and then you know
Starting point is 00:20:06 as well as anyone as someone who's been like constantly sort of the alternative to like over the top yo yo radio. No one wants to be that. And I appreciate it. Don sentiment, but I sincerely hope he doesn't try to avoid being this because it's a beautiful thing. But to answer your question, I love both times like right now, be honest, the freedom to talk politics in the morning is sometimes great. And then there are times like right now where sometimes I'm more worn out doing the morning show and actually just look forward to talking about the giant's disaster of a season. Well, let's talk about what you're talking about, which is the coarsening. I can't believe that you're here to on budget on behalf of the coarsening of New York sports radio, but
Starting point is 00:20:49 you are making the argument on behalf of, oh, that's hackery to have young people come on and manufacture the take that runs Carl Banks out of town just because you are new to the game and the game now is just be louder and mean and yell that Carl Banks is boring. Dan, like, I've been dealing, first of all, I appreciated so much the random slander you had for Carton recently because it was so well deserved. And the fact that FS1 was like, we need to add this guy was remarkable, although we haven't really heard from him since. So I guess it's nice in that sense.
Starting point is 00:21:24 But now like since Carton left, it's like everyone on the fan is racing to the bottom to catch him. Who's going to be the next bad guy for people to cheer on? And like dude, you probably know Carl Banks is one of the kindest sports legends of all time. He is a gentleman. And like, I don't know any of the guys even involved in that. Honestly, but I was so disturbed.
Starting point is 00:21:51 I felt like the need to say something, because it's really worth it to a guy who brought you two super balls. That's really worth it. But Rosenberg, I'm sorry, Peter, this is how you get run out. This is how the game changes under you or the young person on k and legrika show of course in them there are three markets that matter where sports radio and of course it's going to be a race to the bottom i i just like listen
Starting point is 00:22:14 and the truth is we we pay a price for not being like that and i'm proud of it um you know i obviously anyone who's been radio radio knows the rating system is questionable to say the least. And I'm not a fan of it. We love the show that we do. I sincerely can tell you I am blessed. I know you know, Michael a bit. I know you guys played Don stuff all the time.
Starting point is 00:22:35 We're just three normal people who like, yes, we have moments where we get emotional and say angry things. Michael this year gave a full on apology because he reported something that he thought was true. It turned out he wasn't, he wasn't correct. The next day, he did a five minute. I'm so sorry. I need to be better. We really try to do a good job and also just be funny and have a good time. But like, you know, listen, we've become especially post 2020, Dan, where are the woke snowflake show? You know what I mean? Like once people found out that we were interested in handling ourselves a certain way in 2020 and 2021, I think that alienated us to a certain group of people and lionized us a bit. And it's, it's what we have to do with.
Starting point is 00:23:17 Peter, you can't apologize. That's a terrible job. I'm Michael Kay. You cannot apologize on local New York radio. You know that. That's how your ratings go into the tank, okay? But local radio wars, oh, do I miss this then? I mean, there are only a couple of markets that can do it. And I love Peter correctly taking the high road and saying, you know what, the high road loses. I said, the high road loses because trying to maintain some semblance of grace and etiquette and have some,
Starting point is 00:23:44 something that is not cruelty on sports radio will lose to cruelty. Every time it's impossible. Listen, I, dude, listen, how about this? You know this though? Do you know that carton? When carton before he went to jail, the powers that be had the idea to have him come on Harsha. Now I was already in full war with this dude and was like, I don't want, he said horrible
Starting point is 00:24:09 things about me. He's literally made up. He used to go on the air and be like, that kid used to be a fan of mine. He came up to me and told me what a fan he was made up out of thin air, never met him. I'm not from this market. I didn't know him at all. So I already had a personal extra grind on account of being lied about. But I said, hey, if you guys want to do it,
Starting point is 00:24:30 we'll do it. He will the second he gets a second, an opportunity. He will bite us in the throat. And that's exactly what happened, of course. What have you learned about the industry? It's a broad question, but you've worked it from a couple of different...
Starting point is 00:24:46 Not to apologize, I hope. You've worked it from a couple of different angles, and it is a specific kind of person that loves radio the way that you do. I've learned that to get to do this thing that I grew up loving so much, and I really did. I grew up loving both sides of it. Like I wanted to be Funkmaster Flex, you know, and cool DJ Red Alert before him. And I also wanted to be Bob Costas, who I loved listening to do. Costas coast to coast is Sunday night show. Like I loved all of it. What I didn't realize was that by the time I'd become an adult in order
Starting point is 00:25:23 for me to be successful, I'd have to do all of it. I don't think I knew that was the time I'd become an adult in order for me to be successful, I'd have to do all of it. I don't think I knew that was the plan, but you know, with very rare exceptions, and I happen to be talking to one of them, you know, you have to sort of do a lot to really make this thing work, you know, I mean, not everyone's going to be able to start a metal arc or have a pat McAfee situation. I am a true local, you know, radio and TV guy. And that involves a ton of work. Now listen, it's easy work. It is fun. I mean, I will spend Thursday morning in New York City for two hours celebrating the 30 year anniversary of midnight marauders and enter the Wu Tang 36 chambers, getting to play music for New York.
Starting point is 00:26:06 And then I'll go on in the afternoon and talk football. It's not a bad gig, but it's a lot of work. It is a ton of work. You're doing two full-time jobs. Most of those are just one job is enough, but you're still of the opinion that Kendrick Lamar is the greatest rapper of all time. Like you are the greatest lyricist, you are, that has not changed in the last couple of years.
Starting point is 00:26:30 I'm nothing, nothing about my feelings on Kendrick have changed at all. I mean, if you were to say is Kendrick Lamar the greatest MC who ever lived right now. I don't know if I'd say yes or not because my mood can change day to day, but I know what I was saying at that time and I was very committed to it. I put all my credibility chips in on Kendrick. I've been looking for, you know, I have a Sunday night show where I break new artists and
Starting point is 00:26:58 I'm super proud of the artists that I've played for the first time. ASAP Rocky, Todd or the creator, you know, Kendrick. A lot of people I played in New York for the first time, ASAP Rocky, Todd or the creator, Kendrick, a lot of people I played in New York for the first time. And Kendrick was the one when he came along. I decided, this is the guy I'm putting my chips in. And I got it right. I got it right.
Starting point is 00:27:15 You'd be amazed how much it is not benefited me though in any way. Like every other artist in the world who you would think would not care about what my opinion was. My relationship took a hit because I sort of said that about Kendrick and I was like, can't we just all agree this guy's awesome and he's good for it. So like, give me that pass. No, it's a competition through and through and no artist particular loves that take. Peter, if two jobs is a lot of work and it is, I'm not disputing that, why are you taking a third? It's over the top is the name of the podcast
Starting point is 00:27:50 with Michelle Beedle and it's available now on all podcast platforms. I'm sorry, continue Peter. Well, A, Wondery offered me a bag of cash. Okay, there's that number one. Yep. Number two, I mean, yeah, but I respect. I don't appreciate you skipping my third job, which is I also moonlight with the WWE once a month.
Starting point is 00:28:10 This is my fourth job. But no, you know, listen, I said, a, it's beetle. And as you guys know, she is just, she was the first person who embraced me, the SPN. She would, she would get me out to L.A. to do sports nation. Always was just super cool. And then they're like, Hey, you can do it from home. And you're working with Michelle Beetle. And I'm like, listen, like I said, you have to pick the things that make sense in order to make this career work. And to me, an hour a week to hang out with Beetle, I would, I would be stupid to not do that. It's also combining some of the stuff that you love. It's not just pop culture. It's also the wrestling. He is a one time WWE 24 seven champion. You like eliminating. It's just the theme of it is you take two stories and decide which is the bigger one of the week.
Starting point is 00:28:55 You will will bigger or just more fun to talk about. You know, so my guess is let's be realistic guys. We know what this is going to become. This is basically going to become the Michelle Beetle Victor Wemba Yamma recap podcast. I mean, I, that, that is the path that I'm on. I accept it. Um, and I'm sort of the timing is kind of awesome to be doing the podcast with beetle when you think about it. But yeah, that is, that is essentially what it is, picking what the story to talk about is that week and just having fun. Listen, we've only done one episode guys.. This is, we're figuring it out as we go. Um, but if you want to hear me and Beetle having a good time every week and talking about what's going on, that's
Starting point is 00:29:31 sort of the deal. Go scratch, Rosenberg. It's a great saying. Don LaGrecca told someone to go scratch. You cannot get that with your modern sports medium takes. Thank you, sir. I appreciate your time Peter. Hey I appreciate you guys both and Dan I appreciate it everything that you said and did about your brother. I was thinking about you and sending you love so I hope you guys are well. Thank you sir. Thank you Peter. It would be a tragedy if we were losing one person to drug overdose every day. Even five, seven, or twelve people. It would be unimaginable if 15 families a day received news of a lost loved one to overdose.
Starting point is 00:30:10 But in Canada, we lose 20 people to overdose every single day. That's a crisis. At CAMH, we won't back down until there's no one left behind. Don Lebertard. Pablo leads all of podcasting in reading while smiling.
Starting point is 00:31:02 If you listen ESPN Daily, he sounds like he's having the time of his life. Stugats! Coming up next, I'm gonna tell you, that this is Venet bananas. I'll change your face. You know I'm Venet bananas! Ha ha ha!
Starting point is 00:31:14 How do you know I'm smiling? That's how I find my vocal range. Sometimes I just say, Savannah bananas! Ha ha ha! Savannah bananas! Yeah! This is the Don Lebatar show with this two gods.
Starting point is 00:31:27 Alright, so this is not an ad. I should yell that at the top here so you don't fast forward. This is not an ad. We need to get people over there to support our growing enterprise, our business that we're really, really, really proud of. And over there too, as a bonus, new episode
Starting point is 00:32:29 with Action Bronson that I also don't want to spoil, but is ridiculous. And that is over there new today, Friday, for you, over exclusively at the Pobletauri Finds Out Feed. So thank you for supporting us. Thank you for listening. And for more, I think now finally, you know where to go. So I've summoned you both of you to this episode of Sharon Tell, a special in person episode of Sharon Tell. Yes, my lord. You summoned us, my leash, my leash. The topic I want to start with is about God. And both of your faces indicate that you cannot wait to hear me pontificate about my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, which I say tongue in cheekly, but also literally say with the credibility of somebody who has completed all seven sacraments in the Catholic Church,
Starting point is 00:33:24 baptism through, by the way, raments in the Catholic church, baptism through, by the way, got married in the church. I was at that wedding. Yep. You were kneeling in a pew shout out to churches everywhere to churches everywhere because the article I was reading, which is an Esquire Dominique and we didn't know each other Dominique and I that well back then. I want to make it very good It's titled God Magic Mushrooms in Me. And the log line is simple, but complicated. There's a growing movement among religious leaders
Starting point is 00:33:52 to use psychedelics like psilocybin to deepen their faith. The author attended a secret ceremony to find out whether it works. It's my favorite Jim Henson sign. Yeah. God, magic mushrooms in me. Jim Henson, Proud Terp. Is that right?
Starting point is 00:34:07 Yeah. Just the legacy of puppetry I didn't realize was so strong to the University of Maryland. That article, it made me think about how church and religion, which I have become a buffet Catholic about, could actually become more meaningful for me in the present tense. I haven't gone to church a lot in the last two years, but I just went on Sunday, not because I wanted to make it into content, although, of course, Dominique suspects that.
Starting point is 00:34:39 It's because I was a long story short, It was my anniversary, wedding anniversary, seventh anniversary, and I went to church with Liz to just sort of do the thing that I'd like to do sometimes, which is examine the thing that is bigger than ourselves and reflect on where we've come in life. And- You walk into the church, the two of you hand in hand, and just point at people and say,
Starting point is 00:35:03 we got married here. We got married right here. This happened right here seven years ago. You're welcome. All right. Go on with your cataclysm. Cataclysm that have felt cataclysmic as the church has been atrophying, as it's been eroding because it's not appealing to a lot of people who otherwise might actually have that same instinct of like, I want to be a part of something that feels like it's speaking to me from a place that I can't understand. And, Charmini, I'm sorry. No, I was going to ask you actually, like, you're the churchiest of all of us. Am I?
Starting point is 00:35:39 Yeah, I mean, I go to church regularly. My wife is Catholic. We got married in Catholic church also, and the kids are doing all the Catholic things. I think that, first of all, it's hilarious that you wanna make this about church, when it's really just about drugs, just like everything else in your life is, like let me find a way to help with drugs.
Starting point is 00:36:00 I went back to church, no, you saw articles and said, they give out drugs at church, you're like, hey, where's the nearest church? Let me get some of them drug. The article is about how some priests have been experimenting with giving with dosing, aspiring priests with magic mushrooms. So I mean, I think those things are connected in some way.
Starting point is 00:36:18 And what church is for me at least, it wasn't something that I felt like a needer or something that I wanted to go to and it's not about believing being a true believer in religion as much as it's about a necessary thing for Most people that we don't do it's like a time to reflect time to assess a time to Look back a time to look forward and kind of reset yourself and I think that's what I've come to see as useful for church
Starting point is 00:36:43 So like when you go to a Catholic church as I do with my family, I mean, two, three times a month, most of the time we get up in there and less a little too sleepy. But when you go there, they do readings, they do songs, and then you do like the communion stuff. I step to the side when they do communion, I don't go take the little snack, the little sip.
Starting point is 00:37:05 I'm not down with that, but whether all the stuff is factual that I believe or not, it really doesn't matter to me as much as it's the principles that you hear from just about every religion are consistent. And then principles that I think it's important for us to reflect on sometimes and think about. And rarely do I go back at any point through my week,
Starting point is 00:37:24 do I think back like, hey, what happened last week that I'm proud of? What am I ashamed of? What can I work on? What am I gonna focus on next week? And I think church is like a helpful thing. If I could just routinely condition myself
Starting point is 00:37:35 to do it without church, then I'm not sure that I need to do it in church, but being in church, it's someone who's talking to you, and it's not like I'm in there thinking, you know what, God is watching me all the time. No, these are things that are important to me, and sometimes they say things about current issues that I don't, that don't rest.
Starting point is 00:37:53 Sure, oh no, no, no, of course. And then sometimes they say things that, but it's just like a spark in my mind, and it's the same thing where I think some people need some help to get to a place to think about these things, and that's where the psychedelics come into it. Yeah, so why?
Starting point is 00:38:08 For me, I should be clear, my experience at Mass on Sunday was... Not on psychedelics. Not on psychedelics, but I was thinking the whole time about how this could help, because what I want out of Mass, which I tasted beyond the literal Eucharist,
Starting point is 00:38:23 was the idea of, okay, I want to feel like, gosh, I want to feel like there's something out there that I don't understand that I can appeal to. Because what I come to church with, of course, Dominique, are my fears. I come to church with fear. What I pray for is for the safety of my family, for things to go great. I come to church from a place of need. And it's a place of need that is by social custom. Not gonna involve my cell phone.
Starting point is 00:39:01 That's a huge part of the presence of the experience. But also like, that's also what I'd turn to psychedelics for sometimes is, is I want to feel like there's something out there that is bigger than me that I can't explain. With that hints that even if I don't understand it, there's a reassurance in, in, in, in the vastness of. I know it's why it's turned, but I'm a fan of this God for Sakin' Show, so I do know that you tested very high on the narcissist scale, and I also recognize that when I listen to you, I hear it.
Starting point is 00:39:32 Like, did you not understand? You didn't hear the difference in me saying, I'm going to church to reflect on the way that I can be a better human and be reminded about the principles that I find important to me. And you like, I go to church because I want sh**. Correct.
Starting point is 00:39:43 I tell God, watch my back and give me money. Yeah, I, I, I, I was there to tell God that I'm still, I'm still here with my hat in hand, hoping for the collection plate to pass my way. I'm sorry. You're networking with God. I'm trying to book God as a guest on this. That's the most, the most popular thing I've ever heard. That hurts.
Starting point is 00:40:05 It hurts because it's hard to get court-sized seats with Jesus. Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh! I need to reflect on that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:15 Jesus, is it cool if I post this on Instagram? Oh! But okay, but that, that, that, that, that, oh gosh. That I would never do. I would only talk about it on a podcast I would never provide a photograph to play on the draft King's network and or YouTube But why where I I don't want to box you out with my narcissism. Oh, no, what is what is this story? You feel like to you? I'll be honest as the as the table heathen, there's a part of me that I don't have the
Starting point is 00:40:49 same relationship to religion that you all have. I went to Catholic high school and that was maybe where my sort of relationship with Catholicism began and ended. There was religion, like I grew up and we went to church and stuff like that and once I got out of the house, I was kind of like, yeah, it's not really for me. But to me, the interesting thing about that story, well, there were two interesting things. One was for everyone who was going through the experience in this story was just how much everyone had to take a sh**.
Starting point is 00:41:29 And whatever their desire was for this drug to get closer, the mushrooms, the mushrooms, to end some, end some sassafras, whatever their, whatever, whatever the desire was to get closer to their sense of faith or to God as a being or to their understanding, to me there was something that was just inherently funny with the idea that it ended with a what sounds like horrible sh**. One person had diarrhea and had to go to sleep. Like that's, do you understand how serious of diarrhea it is?
Starting point is 00:42:11 When you say, I had diarrhea and then I had to go lay down on drugs. Like that's this wrecked me physically where I need a nap. But I do think that religion, God, has had a marketing problem. And that's why I was drawn to the psychedelics thing because the people who are into like,
Starting point is 00:42:33 oh, I wanna feel stoned and wacky. What I think what you realize when you actually like do maybe sincerely, too sincerely, try psychedelics is the idea that I'm actually seeing the world in a different way. And it enables you to imagine things that your rational brain does not permit. And so this story about people sh**ing prolifically
Starting point is 00:42:56 and then seeing things that remind them of a religious experience and making them closer to God, what that did was remind me like, yeah, going to church stoned, going to church on mushrooms, I think that would get to closer to what Dominique is saying. you
