Starting point is 00:01:37 Hey guys. Hi, I mean. Oh man, what a day. What a day. Look, we were running, running lean today. Yeah. And what a day, what a day. Look, we're running lean today, still dealing with the after effects of a virus that swept the entire studio, plus people on vacation,
Starting point is 00:01:53 but I think we have what it takes here. We got the right stuff. Yeah. I have a question. I'm gonna start with Mike Ryan. Mike, what'd you have for dinner last night? What did I have for dinner? Oh, I cooked a Turkish street cart turkey bowl. Oh very nice Jessica
Starting point is 00:02:11 What'd you have for dinner last night? Lehman made me chicken thighs and Brussels sprouts carrots and I think that was it Chicken thighs the most underrated part of the chicken Roy. What'd you have for dinner? I baked the chicken breast and had carrots. Okay, two for two on chicken? Big carrot. A lot of bunnies here. A lot of chicken and carrots, yeah. What'd you got? I had a spaghetti and meat sauce. Okay, you know what Noel Owls had? He had the Bronzino! Oh yeah, nice and grilled, ladies and gentlemen, with a little squirt of lemon on it. All right, I have questions,
Starting point is 00:02:48 because I think it was weird, because normally- What, that setup? Well, that was also odd. And he didn't tell us what he had for dinner. Oh, no, it doesn't matter. Oddball butterwhip. But, so a lot of people enjoyed Noah Lyles' failure. I understand why, but that usually goes against the Olympic spirit.
Starting point is 00:03:07 But I've seen an extra dash of spice from people that come from basketball. Oh, really? I wonder why I hadn't noticed that at all. You know what I did notice? So if you don't know, Noah Lyles, who won the gold in 100 meters, which isn't his strong suit. We've been talking about this whole time. But it does give him the distinction of fastest man in the world.
Starting point is 00:03:27 Absolutely. Now the interesting thing is, even if you didn't know that that 200 meter is his main event, right? That's his wife. The other event is his mistress. Mistress. If you watched 100 meter,
Starting point is 00:03:39 that was his quote, Jessica. We didn't just come up with that. Oh, thank God. I was gonna say, how did you come up with that? I didn't, Siciliano did yesterday. No, Siciliano didn't. That up with that like thank god i was gonna say how did you come up with that i didn't ceciliano did yesterday no ceciliano didn't that's what noel isles did noel isles did a lot of talking and before the race he did a lot of meme posting and this was as ceciliano again pointed out yesterday for all the weedy's boxes this was where he can become carl lewis if especially if he backs up all that talk this is he
Starting point is 00:04:05 becomes one of the all-time greats yes he does and so if you watched the 100 meter you can tell because he is a notorious slow starter and then as the race goes he picks up speed and he closed out in the hundred meter in the 200 meter heats he lost in the semi-finals I believe but it doesn't matter you have be top two in order. But he doesn't usually lose heat. Yes. And his face kind of said something that his mouth and fingers weren't.
Starting point is 00:04:33 So, but he runs the race, he comes in third, and then afterwards we learned that he tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. And everyone's like, oh my gosh, he must've been so exhausted and everything. And they had to come out and bring out the wheelchair. Do we have a picture of the wheel? There he is. Oh my gosh, the poor guy.
Starting point is 00:04:53 How did he even run the race? If you didn't, if you just watched the race, you would say, yeah, clearly there was something wrong with him. But here's the problem. This was him moments before the race, doing his signature, I'm the most energetic man in the world routine. Look at him folks. He's jumping He's prancing. He's dancing arms out. He's basking in the energy of the thousands of people
Starting point is 00:05:17 Jennifer love he would what are you waiting for spin? Yeah, I just want to point out that Noah louse is asthmatic Yeah, I just want to point out that Noah louse is asthmatic So no, I mean the wheelchair is probably a condition of that sure these are these are all super wheelchair for asthma Yeah, yes. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, can you walk Tony? I'm mildly as I run. I am mildly asthmatic I can tell you right now. Nothing triggers an asthma attack like getting my ass beat I swear to God all of us like if I lose at something, oh, I can't breathe at all. Mildly. Man, I'm telling you, that whole video of me with the jump shot,
Starting point is 00:05:49 I was at the hospitalizer. You were in a wheelchair. You dick. Why didn't you tell us? We would have completely dropped that whole bit, by the way, if you had just told us this was during an asthma attack. Yeah, it hit immediately after the ball released.
Starting point is 00:06:07 It was amazing. Right after it. American Ninja Warrior, that same thing happened there? Ninja Warrior, when I took that first step, all of a sudden that asthma started to creep up on me. I mean, athletes know their body pretty well, and he was gassing himself up, not just right before the race,
Starting point is 00:06:22 but sending out memes before the race. I mean he oozes confidence and he's certainly not oozing confidence at the end of that race. If he felt at all impacted by COVID-19 physically, don't you think he would have hedged a little bit? He didn't cut any of that stuff back. Maybe he didn't know exactly until he got into it. I think it's a very fair thing. We're still learning so much about this virus. I do find it funny that we've gone from canceling the Olympics and shifting it a year to like, okay, yeah, you go ahead and race with it, track and field athlete.
Starting point is 00:06:55 And then he did an interview post-race, and he had a mask on, on NBC with the mic, and I said, you gotta trash that mic immediately, right? Given what we know about the river, I don't think the safety of the athletes, the health and safety of the athletes is really as paramount as it used to be. I was actually surprised to learn
Starting point is 00:07:12 that there weren't any COVID protocols at this Olympics. I kind of assumed that if you tested positive, you wouldn't be allowed to participate, but apparently it's left up to the team if you can participate or not. So I think the obvious concern is, did he get anyone else sick? Because if he wants to compete,
Starting point is 00:07:30 I think any one of us would try to if we were in that position. And these are all athletes that have had parts of their careers significantly impacted by COVID. Not just if they were in the Tokyo Olympics, but they've had to deal with all of these travel restrictions and getting sick and recovering and all of these things that we they've had to deal with all of these travel restrictions and getting sick and recovering and all of these things that we've all had to deal with too.
Starting point is 00:07:48 Worst timeline to be a professional athlete, especially in those non-revenue sports. It's a terrible time for them. And some athletes miss the Olympics altogether because the peak of their athleticism was 2020. And you shift to 2021 and there goes my shot. Now, Jessica, you asked if you got anybody else sick and there was actually a outbreak of people
Starting point is 00:08:07 who were just sick to the stomach. There's everybody who hates on USA basketball, you MFers, double middle fingers. I'm not gonna do it because we're live over there right now, but double middle fingers to all of you because guys, we got the game. First of all, I know Noah Lyles was sick watching that. Oh yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:24 It's so weird. Oh my God. Game first of all I know no miles was sick watching that oh, yeah My god Just like unpack this mindset because I think there's a lot of fans that are no alliles haters because they're NBA supporters God damn right a supporter you were either a Jokovic like defender or you're a no back. Yeah The Joker You had your bets or American NBA fans soft. Yeah rooting for team USA But I feel like there's all these sort of branches coming off of this tree right now. I'm very confused. What yeah, it's like Game of Thrones
Starting point is 00:09:00 I'm super I get it. I understand why NBA folks and basketball folks like wanted to go at Noah Lyles. I'm curious if Noah Lyles after that failure turned on the Serbia USA game and became the biggest Serbian basketball fan on the planet. Mike, let me tell you, I was watching that game and I don't think I've ever, ever, other than watching South Sudan,
Starting point is 00:09:23 I don't think I've ever cared about Olympic basketball I was like come on Dude with getting beat out of there LeBron had that layup first of all no and bead in the second in the second Yeah, but there was there was plenty of frustrating international ball and bead there I'm just telling you like you know first of all shout out to grant hill because he had the foresight he knew This day was coming if you needed him for one game it was against Serbia and he came in and he and he delivered but when LeBron hit that layup that was like this he could have gone up with his left hand but he went up with his right hand instead
Starting point is 00:09:53 and they went up one I think that's his offhand as you know yeah he's quick to remind us so those right hand is his offhand dude I let out the loudest, most partisan, most xenophobic cheer. Like, yes! I was so ecstatic, man. I need to feel in those ways. I need Team USA to go up against a team that you respect with high stakes. International basketball, especially for the US, it's such a skewed perspective because they just kind of sleepwalk through the qualification process.
Starting point is 00:10:24 For the World Cup in soccer, it's hard to get to the World Cup. The actual tournament, what's known as the World Cup, that's actually the finals. They call it the World Cup finals. The qualification process takes years and years and it's very hard. For Team USA, they sleepwalk through the entire thing. They usually somewhere along the way automatically qualify. So you don't really have the connection points to those teams. You need them to actually, you need to fear. And you feared yesterday because they were live underdogs. They were plus, they were plus 250 at one point
Starting point is 00:10:59 entering that fourth quarter. And then they go on this incredible run. When my boy hit that four point play I was like oh my god this is over. Who's your boy? I don't know the guy's name. Avramovic. Sumvich somewhere. Avramovic he was killing. He was ripping from three but at that point I was like oh I think that that put him down 14. Yeah. And I was like oh my god this can't be happening. So that was I think that was in the second half teamers had cut it to like five or six, and then we were like, okay, now play time's over. And then Serbia went on that run again, and like, oh crap, like this is gonna
Starting point is 00:11:34 need a vintage performance. And we got a vintage performance from LeBron James and Steph Curry at the same time. So damn cool to see them cooking at the same time with steaks. I never thought I would say this, right? Dream Team, 92, obviously all the legends there. Redeem Team, 2008, like that forcefulness and whatever. But I think yesterday was the greatest moment
Starting point is 00:11:55 in USA basketball history because we got to see LeBron and Steph Curry at the same time being great on the same team. Like it felt like- While Mello was coaching them. I'm gonna, I think I'm still gonna go with Redeem team because that Spanish team was really special. That's not to say the Serbian team
Starting point is 00:12:14 isn't special in its own right. They probably have the best basketball player on the planet in their own right. The international basketball because of stuff like the Dream team has totally changed. But that Redeem Team narrative was legitimate and Spain was almost every bit as good as that team. And it took Dwayne Wade coming off the bench, you had Kobe, you have, and time has been kind to that Redeem Team, Mello, LeBron,
Starting point is 00:12:38 peak of the powers LeBron, even though yesterday it kind of seemed like it was peak of the powers LeBron. Triple double, First triple double in Olympic history. But we got to see KD, Steph, LeBron all cooking at the same time and it was genuinely special. It's really cool to watch LeBron kick out to Steph Curry and Steph Curry realized I'm rarely this open and I'm just going to absolutely cook this guy. What was he? Nine of 14 from three. Nine of 14 from three, 36 points on 12 of 19 shooting overall. And he could have had more. Steve Kerr pulled him out.
Starting point is 00:13:15 The record I think for Team USA is 37 is Mello. He could have had more. But I mean, it was, I can't describe. And it's the combination of, wow, what a great game. Obviously, Yokoji, as you said, is the best player in the world, but they had to, because in a 40-minute game, we talked about this yesterday, it's like having depth only means so much.
Starting point is 00:13:37 Like if you got a guy who can play 38 out of 40 minutes, like, what are you gonna do having said that with the Noah Liles thing hanging over it made it so much more like the stakes that's why I say it's the best ever because because the Noah Liles because the stakes have never been higher like they could if they lost that game dude I dude I think the stakes were higher against Spain no way redemption was the arc in the NFL there is no margin for error. One mistake can change the outcome of a game.

No, no, it's crazy, it's crazy. People, you know what I've realized? People love putting their athletic insecurities on me.
Starting point is 00:15:32 Don't project that shit on me. You suck! Not my problem! Chris Cody leaves the game early, oh let's support Chris Cody! Whatever the f*** Billy does, let's support that! I'm Ryan, let's go to Buffalo, oh let's go to Buffalo! Like, give me a break. You a buffalo, I'm a bull shit. Tony, you totally proved that you weren't at all unhinged. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:15:50 This is the Dan LeBattar Show with the StuGuard. I wanna get into the mindset of someone that roots against Noah Lyles, but also roots against Team USA because they like Jokic so much, because that person definitely exists, and probably there's more of them than we can imagine. I might be sitting in the studio with him,
Starting point is 00:16:12 because Amin's got such a complicated relationship. No, he was rooting for Team USA yesterday. I always root for USA basketball. The only time I don't South Sudan is the only time I'm like, I want South Sudan. But it seemed as though your rooting interest wasn't necessarily so much to USA as it was anti-Noah Lyles.
Starting point is 00:16:27 No, yeah, I should adjust that. I honestly don't care most of the time who wins, but like yesterday was one of those ones I'm like, oh, is this what it feels like to be a fan? Like were you like, I can't have my team lose because then I got to walk into this room tomorrow or later today and have to hear it from this dude. And so like the combination of him losing and then winning. There isn't a Serbian Bill Simmons. I think you would have been fine.
Starting point is 00:16:49 There is a, so what Jessica's referring to, and we got the tweets from Kevin Durant responding. Who was cooking all night and all morning in Paris. Good for him, man. Excellent job by Kevin Durant here. You got someone saying cheering against Team USA, you mean like all those Americans who are making fun of Nola, not winning gold in his latest race. Good old double standards. And my man KD said to all you Nuggets fans,
Starting point is 00:17:16 nobody gives a brrrr, ew y'all. Lames believe he's the best player in the league. Players got major respect for the joker. We don't worship him like y'all do, but most are in all of his brilliance. Trolling you corn balls for rooting emphasis is part of the game. Deal with it. He did the athlete a part, which is a part, one word as opposed to a part.
Starting point is 00:17:37 He also went on, someone tweeted, this exact thing he's talking about has existed since the inception of the NBA. You think people weren't worshiping MJ and Bird and being divisive then? I hate to be that guy. But it only seemed like it's a problem now, like guys like Yannis and Yokocho getting the same treatment. And KD responds, that's what y'all do, y'all clowns.
Starting point is 00:17:57 Use players to push these corny agendas y'all got. This is a brotherhood, fam. You not a part of. Again, there's the athlete apart. It's a problem now, cause social media got you clowns walking around with your chest out like you mean something. You don't.
Starting point is 00:18:11 Your takes don't matter. He told you Wes. That's another one. It's an odd way to prove to somebody their take doesn't matter. Your takes don't matter in all caps. Yeah, he gives off a lot of I don't care. Here's the last one.
Starting point is 00:18:24 But you're all caring. You read the actions and he very clearly cares and that's fine. That's his fuel and I'm not going to talk anymore because he'll hop in my mind. Does he still follow you? Yeah, he does. Learned a lot about US sports culture today. A lot of flexing for only just beating a nation of 6.6 million in a sport they invented. Acting like Jokic fans are committing treason we here would never do this to a small pacific a nation and rugby league we black lab nobody cares josh barnett where the hell you from katie says let's talk about the bank culture that's been created recently a lot of huge egos who believe there are they are the reason for the advancement of a sport
Starting point is 00:19:00 a lot of idol worship a lot of hate division based off wins and losses a lot of disrespect of the work being put in by these incredible athletes, mostly by people who don't know what it takes to be good at anything. Is that the athlete a lot? Besides talking. It was the first one. Go do something and get out the way. Too long didn't read.
Starting point is 00:19:24 This is a nuanced quote tweet, always. It's just the bulk of it. It just always, it always gets skimmed. You think KD paid for the blue check? No. I don't think so, because LeBron didn't pay for the blue check. No.
Starting point is 00:19:38 He made a point to not, and then he just got one. This all started with an account that tweeted, Serbia just took the most talented team in the history of the planet to the wire with a medal on the line. Team USA was a 16 point favorite. The whole country should be proud. With a picture of Jokic.
Starting point is 00:19:53 And then Kevin Durant replied, where are you from? And that was at like 5 a.m. local time in France. Oh wow. But like that's a good point. I mean I mess with it. Like he, credit to him. Sometimes he'll, he does a lot of hopping in DMs too, from what I've heard, because I've had friends that they put
Starting point is 00:20:10 tweets out there and he'll just he won't put it out for public consumption like and he'll go at folks. You're sitting next to someone who's been a victim of the KD DM. He goes he goes for hours. I mean, I had an asthma attack immediately after the wheelchair. Whatever fuels a man. It's it's a joy to watch him play. It's a joy to watch this team. I don't asthma attack immediately after. In a wheelchair. Whatever fuels him, man. It's a joy to watch him play. It's a joy to watch this team.
Starting point is 00:20:27 I don't think it's the most talented one, though. Oh, I don't think it's the most talented one. I'm just saying, that was the most invested I've ever been, including 2008, which by the way, I worked for Team USA 2008. I got a t-shirt for the gold medal, by the way. Oh yeah? Where is it?
Starting point is 00:20:43 It's at home. It's one of the... Yep. Look at me, blue wind. t-shirt for the gold medal by the way. Like, yeah. Where is it? It's at home. It's one of the... Yeah. Look at me, blue and red. It's literally one of those. I didn't even like a lapel pin. Team USA won gold medal at the Olympics. I don't like that with the t-shirt.
Starting point is 00:20:54 Do you have an Olympic ring tattoo? Cause I think that qualifies. If you work for like team USA, you can do that. Oh man, look, if I started posting... Did you travel? No, I didn't. This is all remote. This is all from Phoenix. I if I start travel no I did this is all this is all remote this is all from from Phoenix I'm like I basically yeah I had an asthma
Starting point is 00:21:10 attack I couldn't get on the plane for that. You get the Olympic logo tattooed on yourself? Nah man. Oh come on. Yeah that's what we're saying like if he if he traveled though I think he qualifies he can do that. Oh yeah absolutely. I didn't travel so I did all from the safety of my home or my office I should say Steve Kershaw get it Steve Kershaw get it is a pretty buttoned-up operation Wait, we notoriously here in this country don't fund our Olympic programs But USA team USA basketball is a pretty decent operation Shout out to the man who kicked that ball rolling which is Jerry Colangelo He got it to a place where they were making money fundraising and stuff like that and in turn it has funded a bunch of other programs the youth programs the women's program
Starting point is 00:21:49 all that stuff that's Jerry Colangelo got that going and Grant Hill is continuing that legacy again USA beat Serbia 95-91 after being down double digits for a lot of that game and I was elated, elated, and combining that with Noah Lyles in that wheelchair, the first thing I thought of was like, you know what's the difference between Noah Lyles and NBA players? Our guys in wheelchairs walk away with the gold. Or with poop in their pants.
Starting point is 00:22:18 And the gold though, and a gold ball. I find the Noah Lyles hate a bit strange because he did win the 100 meter. Jess, I'm putting blinders on right now. If anyone can get down with the idea of an athlete really emphasizing an injury or a health scare because they lost, it's the NBA. It's NBA players.
Starting point is 00:22:40 What are you talking about? Oh, come on, what am I talking about? What are you talking about? Yeah, but come on. I also think Noah Lyles is so great for the Olympics and for track and field. There was a press conference, I think we have video of it, of Tobogo who won the 200 meter.
Starting point is 00:22:54 He's from Botswana and he was asked, do you think you could be the face of athletics? And his answer was so funny. I hope we have this video. I think we have the video. We can play it. I think we do have the video. By the way, I love the idea that his name is Tobogo,
Starting point is 00:23:06 because it reminds me of Trinidad and Tobogo. We apparently don't have the video, but I would love to hear the perspective of someone that is in their starting gate, as Noah Lyles is doing the Jennifer Love Hewitts. But do you like, please stop. What is this? I'd be so insulted by that display,
Starting point is 00:23:23 and I know he does it all the time, but he's gotta be met with so many eye rolls from the other athletes. Like, congratulations, you're a nose hair faster than me. What is this? Mike, what would you do if you were running the 200? I would take an asthma attack probably. If you saw him coming out and you did that.
Starting point is 00:23:39 I'd be pissed. I'd be pissed. Let's say, like, if I were an athlete of comparable speed, I'd like to say, like, I say like, I'm gonna get out of this starting block so well because I think, I mean, I do kind of, the athlete that I am with like a Louisiana-shaped bruise on my hip because I missed a beer league soccer ball
Starting point is 00:23:57 and crashed into the pole. I do kind of think- Did you take alpha brain that day? I did. I mean, I got my hands to it, but then it ricocheted off and then I ran into the pole. It's actually pretty nasty, I'll show you during the break, but there are times like, you get in heated arguments that some guy talks shit to you and I do kind of feel like I lock in a
Starting point is 00:24:14 little bit more. That's the kind of gamer I am. I mean, if I had seen him come out and do all that stuff, I would say, no, no, your asthma, the COVID, it might've drained you. You hate her. Shut up. I mean, I mean, is it? You want a gold. It's weird though. No, it doesn't matter.
Starting point is 00:24:31 It's like you can't. It does not matter. He hates USA soccer. You know what? Where are you with that now? And they didn't want a gold. Oh, well now, I don't know if you guys talked about this, but there was a rumor that Thierry Henry
Starting point is 00:24:41 might be the next manager. Yeah, I'm not crazy about that. I'm gonna tell you right now, if you wanna get me back. Why? Because, man, that's... I like Thierry Henry just as much as the next guy. I think he's a great personality.
Starting point is 00:24:51 I think he was a wonderful player, got away with a handball, knocked out Ireland from World Cup qualification. I am part Irish, so I resent him for that. But, I mean... Who is the Emma Hayes of men's soccer? Because that's what the men's team needs. Yeah, they do, and there's rumors that they're talking to Pochettino right now to take over the men.
Starting point is 00:25:08 I do, let's not even get to my poach takes, because he was a Chelsea manager, and I got plenty of them, he's a career loser, and I, even though, he does, he's a career loser, dude. He found a way to not really rack up trophies with PSG. Like, that's amazing, when you consider how game the system is for PSG in that league. But I do want to concentrate a little bit about US women's soccer because this is a massive
Starting point is 00:25:33 game and it's great storylines because Marta is an icon, one of the greatest soccer players ever, men or women, and she has her send-off game in the gold medal game against Team USA, which Emma Hayes, it may be frustrating sometimes I know from a substitution perspective, we can dive in a little bit deeper Jess, but you know how big of an Emma Hayes fan I am because I used to work with Chelsea. How are you feeling headed into this gold medal match?
Starting point is 00:25:54 Honestly, like I had very little expectations for this tournament because the team has had such a small amount of time with Emma Hayes so far to get prepped for this Olympics. They've only played a handful of games together So I was like, okay if they make it out of the group stage and win one knockout round game I think that would be a really good like a good follow-up from last year where this team was like at rock bottom A year ago when they lost to Sweden in the World Cup
Starting point is 00:26:17 I'm curious who Amin is rooting for though because I know he's a big Brazilian men's soccer question and a team USA hater in a lot of sports, but not basketball. So what do we do with women's soccer? I love US women's national team. I think they deserve a lot more resources given that they are successful and they are popular unlike the guys on the other side of the aisle. But this is a tough one for me because I typically root for US women's national team, but Brazil is Brazil, man.
Starting point is 00:26:41 Are you a big Marta guy? I am. Oh, come on, man. She's a legend. She's amazing. If they lose this one I think that everyone that is a fan of the game can acknowledge like this is a really cool way for for Marta to go out. I'm definitely rooting for USA here like I'm also a big fan of them but like that would be one small thing that would make it the the loss not sting as hard plus you get a silver medal. Yeah there's a joy in winning a silver. And silver is better than bronze. A lot has changed over the years audience as you've been so kind and
Starting point is 00:27:12 pointing out my shirt size has changed over the years. Look I started this show as a 19 year old boy now I'm a 38 year old dad but along the way one staple of my life has been Miller Lite and those of you that have been listening to us know this. I've been a Miller Lite guy since day one. I've been pretty honest about that. So let's get down to the nitty gritty. What is the best thing about the original Light Beer Miller Lite? It sparked this debate way back in 1975, and we still haven't settled it. For me, it's the undebatable quality. It's great taste. And it's less filling. Whether you're out with your friends, at a game, at a bar, in the shower, Miller Lite delivers Miller Time every time.
Starting point is 00:27:49 You don't have to choose what's best about Miller Lite. It has great taste and is less filling. Tastes like Miller Time. To get Miller Lite delivered right to your door, visit MillerLite.com slash Dan, or you can find it pretty much anywhere that sells beer. Celebrate responsibly Miller Brewing Company Milwaukee, Wisconsin 96 calories per 12 ounces, fewer cows and carbs than premium regular beer. Celebrate responsibly, Miller Brewing Company, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 96 calories per 12 ounces, fewer cows and carbs than premium regular beer. Don LeBretard! Now, I've taken the West Side Highway many, many times. I enjoy it. It's very scenic. It gets me to where I want to go. Stugats! But you mean to tell me that the FDR drive isn't a better freeway to take?
Starting point is 00:28:25 We're getting from the top of my hand to the bottom of my hand? Bleh, you gotta be kidding me, I'm appalled. I'm absolutely disgusted by the way you wanna take these surface streets. This is the Dunn Lebatar Show with the Stugats. Howdy folks! Lot of good concerts going on. Major League Baseball games are heating up. If you want Major League Baseball tickets, why don't you go to an authorized MLB ticket
Starting point is 00:28:53 marketplace. Do yourself a favor and download the Game Time app. Create an account. You should know the deal by now. Use the code DAN, that is D-A-N for $20 off your first purchase. Terms apply, last minute tickets lowest price guaranteed. You know how often I am about this life. I looked over all the Stanley Cup purchases that I made. I'm just chalking that up to a once-in-a-lifetime rule of the dice but thank you Game Time
Starting point is 00:29:20 for saving me money there. Low price guarantee, Game Time app. Once again, that is promo code D-A-N, Dan. So we found the quote from Mr. Tobogo, who won the gold medal in the 200 meter race. This is what he had to say. Let's roll it if we could. I think for me, I can be the face of athletics because I'm not an arrogant or a loud person like Noah. So I believe Noah is the face of athletics.
Starting point is 00:29:49 Is that a Team USA teammate of Noah's right there next to him? Look at the face. Yeah, that was Kenny Bednerik. I want to play that one more time because the quote itself is good for the audio audience. But for video, let's focus on Kenny Bednerik's face here. Teamate slash opponent, because they do race against each other,
Starting point is 00:30:05 but they're also on Team USA together and do relays together. I think for me, I can be the face of athletics because I'm not an arrogant or a loud person like Noah. So I believe Noah is the face of athletics. That's a cosign. Yeah, absolutely. That's a cosign. Yeah, absolutely. That's a cosign.
Starting point is 00:30:26 Absolutely, one of my favorite stories is if you watch like, Kobe getting punched by Chris Childs. Oh. Like, so. In the throat. Yeah, in the throat, right? If you watch that video, go back and watch Shaq.
Starting point is 00:30:40 And it's like, Shaq is, there's so many fights I've seen where Shaq just comes in and starts shoving people. And when Chris Child's two piece, and Shaq is just like chilling back there. And I was like, that speaks volumes. It's the same thing with Caitlin Clark earlier this year when she got roughed up by Kennedy Carter.
Starting point is 00:30:57 It's not that she got roughed up or whatever. It's like nobody on her team like even reacted or flinched. I said, that speaks volumes, man. And so right there, my man like not being offended in any way. They're finding the humor in it. Oh my God, that's, but it's like the classiest put down ever, right?
Starting point is 00:31:13 He's like, he literally is asking, you wanna be the face of athletics? I can't be, because I'm not a jackass. Like no, that's why he's the face of athletics. It was so matter of fact. And yeah, Beneric has like made comments about Noah Lyles in the past too. And like just Noah Lyles obviously is known for his antics as well as for being
Starting point is 00:31:30 incredibly speedy and fast. And I also heard yesterday he will not be competing in the four by 100 relay because of COVID. I think he like kind of announced it, but made it not definitive in his announcement. But it seems like that probably wouldn't be a good idea. So TBD if they're able to break that four by one curse, because the men's four by one relay team hasn't been doing well lately.
Starting point is 00:31:51 I kind of feel for Noah Lyles as someone that, I don't follow track and field outside of these major events, and I know the characters there, but he is the world's fastest man, and somewhat a punchline at the exact same time. And I don't understand how you manage that. You're the world's fastest man and everyone's having a go at you for not
Starting point is 00:32:08 being fast. By his own doing though. Everybody's taking a hack at him. Exactly. Who did this? I think he has a lot of fans too. Like, I don't think everyone hates him. I think he's got a lot of fans and I think people do find his whole thing like pretty funny and entertaining. And like, look, we're talking about men's track for an entire 30 minute segment today, and I think it's because he's such a huge personality.
Starting point is 00:32:30 The guy who beat him in the 200 said. But Jess, I want to say, if you think about Usain Bolt, who's always going to be the standard, we talked about him for damn near an entire show. We still talk about him. Because there's a way to do it that's fun and not aggravating. Yeah, and it's not like he lacked for confidence. Yeah, he was also though like one of the great like no one will ever do what he did. So but kind of sets himself apart from
Starting point is 00:32:55 just one win in the Olympics. Beyond the performance though, like as a character he like there's a positivity that Usain Bolt got out. You guys were losing to Usain Bolt and they're like, aw, you know. They liked him too. No, I agree with you. I think though, I'm just saying, I don't think it's universal, like we all hate this guy.
Starting point is 00:33:16 I do see that he has a lot of fans. Yeah, but people that follow the NBA certainly feel some kind of way about him. I know we're in the days of stand-dom and you have to feel really passionately about it. I do kind of, I have some sympathy for what he's going through right now because, but at the same time, I do find the humor in that you're to blame. Like if you just did all this humbly and if, if you knew that you were sick, like why aren't you putting out precautionary measures beforehand to kind of like let people know
Starting point is 00:33:45 that you're going through some stuff, but he wasn't changing his demeanor at all. He kept it true to himself. I would have rather let the whole Olympics end and then reveal, you know, by the way, I was tested positive for COVID, but I still tried and did it out there, whatever. It didn't seem like he wanted it to get out
Starting point is 00:34:03 from what I could tell. What about getting in the wheelchair? What's that? I think he was having a legit, like he couldn't breathe after where he was. He also couldn't win. Okay, yeah, he didn't win. I'm just sad.
Starting point is 00:34:14 There are other things going on there that we gotta acknowledge that COVID does probably compound. It's a respiratory illness. That definitely compounds his asthma. And it also compounds like as an event goes on. Like if you're before an event and then 20 seconds later, it's so bad, I've gotta be in a wheelchair. But before it, I can jump and hop into everything.
Starting point is 00:34:33 Before he hadn't like sprinted a 200 meter sprint for a medal in the Olympics. So I buy it if your asthma acts up after the race. What if he wins gold? What are we doing if he wins gold? Is he in the wheelchair if he wins gold or is he running around? No, he's running around. Okay. Okay. Just making sure. Yeah. But he is telling us that he won gold while having COVID for sure. Yeah. Definitely. It's a double edged sword
Starting point is 00:34:57 because on one side, Hey, I won bronze, but I'm in a wheelchair, my asthma. But then I overcame. If I won gold, I had COVID, have asthma, like all this stuff. It's like, you can't have both sides. It's safe to assume. He does not lose heats It's safe to assume that he had COVID during the heat as well So right mean if you have a guy that's his best event and he loses I understand He did all the cocky stuff on the front end what it's safe to say this had an impact on him. I Don't care. That's fine. You can be a hater. You're entitled to being a hater.
Starting point is 00:35:28 I'm down with that. I'm glad that you're just wearing it. I'm trying to both, like, I'm trying to show the other side so this show isn't just like us being a bunch of haters. No. No. I also think that, like, you know, we always complain about, like, oh, this guy's so boring, or like, this is boring, this sport's boring, blah blah blah. And so for someone to inject some, like, personality in it, whether you like, or like, this is boring, the sport's boring, blah, blah, blah. And so for someone to inject some like, personality, whether you like it or not, I think generally is fun. So I got another Olympic thought. Especially in August.
Starting point is 00:35:52 That goes with this theme of like, people talking trash, right, and do you guys see the men's 1500 meter? Oh yeah. Right, the rivalry between Kerr of the UK. Engbertson. And Ingbertson of Norway. I'm struggling with things today. No, explain it to me. Okay, so Ingbertson won gold at the last Olympics, right?
Starting point is 00:36:13 And he is generally considered the best at the 1500 meters in the world, right? But then Kerr, who's from Britain, wins gold at the World Championships last August, and starts talking a lot of trash. And so what we've had over the last year pretty much is this war of words of, it's not a cold war, it's very outwardly, you don't really see it in that sport
Starting point is 00:36:34 where guys are like, I don't like him, I think he's a clown, da da da. And the other guy's like, he never says that when I'm around, he never says it to my face. And so we had this whole buildup of these two guys, who's gonna win gold, the world champion or the defending Olympic champion. And then the 1500 meter race happens and Team USA comes from nowhere to win gold and
Starting point is 00:36:54 bronze, right? And you know it was basically neck and neck between Kerr and Engbredsen until the last... Yeah the the last like 100 meters. And like Engbertson, I can't say that name. He was setting the pace the whole race and he was going so fast that the entire time the announcing team was like, this is a blazing speed. This is gonna be really hard to keep up for the entire 1500 meters. And sure enough, like he pulled up towards the end
Starting point is 00:37:21 and didn't even end up meddling. But do you know what the tactical mistake he he made he's running he had the inside lane the American runner Hawker Cole Hawker Cole Hawker was like he's not gonna be able to pass if you're gonna try to pass you have to go all the way on the outside that would have been crazy but because Kerr was on Engelbert since right he was so concerned racing each other. And so he goes away from the inside and that opened the way. I did see this race, yeah. For a cold Hawker to just zoom right up.
Starting point is 00:37:50 And I think when that happened, it broke him. It broke Enbertson because he was so concerned about Kerr. He was like, what the hell? They didn't get that license plate over there. And zooms right in. Hawker wins. Kerr comes in for the silver and then Nuguse for USA. He went to Notre Dame by the way. Did he? Yes he did. Jared Nuguse. There was a lot,
Starting point is 00:38:12 like Team USA has been killing it in track and field this Olympics, which is why I feel like I've been so locked in. Yesterday, Tara Davis-Woodhall won the long jump, which was just crazy. She jumped over seven meters and her boy or her husband is a Paralympian. So their celebration afterwards was like, I, it was a real tearjerker in my household. They were on the today show this morning. Oh, really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:33 Good for them. That's cute. Uh, and then Sydney McLaughlin, McLaughlin, LaVronie with the 400 meter hurdles, just like doing the Katie Ledecky thing of like, she's so far ahead that the rest of the runners weren't even in the picture when She crossed the finish line winning her second gold medal was crazy And then Grant Holloway who's the 110 meter hurdler for the US he won gold too yesterday So all of this between like 14 o'clock and like 16 o'clock yesterday
Starting point is 00:38:59 I was just so locked into team USA Opening ceremonies tend to matter more for the Olympics. It's kind of strange, but Katie Ledecky, you mentioned her, she's gonna be the flag bearer for the closing ceremonies. While it's an honor, the opening ceremonies is the assignment that you want, because Coco was a flag bearer in the opening ceremonies. Coco is already back, working on her career.
Starting point is 00:39:21 She's not gonna hang around for the closing ceremonies. Why is that? We got Tom Cruise for this thing. No one really ever talks about the closing ceremonies I mean I'm sure it probably cost a lot of money to stick around like Past when you're not that it matters for someone like Coco who probably has a lot of money from playing tennis professionally for four years already But it probably is like you got to get back at some point and train if Katie Ledecky Maybe doesn't need to get back right away for any sort of, you know, she doesn't have the US Open
Starting point is 00:39:48 coming up in a week. Yeah, exactly. I think that's the big thing is do you have competition that's happening? If you have competition that's happening, you can't waste time hanging out. But for a lot of these, as you've mentioned, Jess, like a lot of these athletes are people who have day jobs.
Starting point is 00:40:01 Right? Like these are regular people who happen to be amazing at something. And so for them, yeah, I'm gonna continue this paid vacation in France and hang out in Olympic Village. And- Eat the chocolate muffins that everyone's raving about. Apparently the chocolate muffins in the Olympic Village
Starting point is 00:40:18 are insane. They look incredible. Not croissants? But there's- Muffins. But there's also worms in the food too. Allegedly. The Olympic organizers are like, no, there's not. What are you talking about? There's also worms in the food too. Allegedly. The Olympic organizers are like, no there's not, what are you talking about?
Starting point is 00:40:28 There's no worms here. Look at how great we've been treating everybody. Forcing them in the E. Coli River. RFK Junior is nowhere near the Olympic coach. This has been a bad Olympics for Paris, right? Yeah. Not a good look for them. So I look forward to everybody in four years
