The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz - The Big Suey: Too Many Words with The Cooligans

Episode Date: August 7, 2023

Billy feels bad for Stugotz and Dan wants to petition to send Stugotz back to WFAN after hearing stories of Stu finding an obscene amount of money in his Venmo account and not knowing ANY of our 'Look...s Like' submissions. Then, Christian Polanco and Alexis Guerreros of 'The Cooligans' join us to discuss the biggest story in sports: the USWNT's loss in the Round of 16 of The World Cup. We break down the anti-American reaction to the USWNT and why it's so hard to be an activist, the thudding finality of this group's exit, where the organization can go from here, and more. Starting point is 00:00:00 You're listening to Giraffe King's Network. Welcome to the big suite, presented by Giraffe King. Why are you listening to this show? The podcast that seems very similar to the other Dan Levitard podcast. I'm sorry, I'm not going to apologize for that. In fact, the only difference seems to be this imaging. I have been tempted in restaurants just walking past tables to grab somebody's fries that if they're just there.
Starting point is 00:00:34 That hasn't happened to you guys. I've done it. And now, here's the marching man to nowhere, that face and the habitual liar. For those of you who do not know, because I've been married to this creature almost 20 years and relationships in this business usually don't last that long without getting busted up.
Starting point is 00:00:54 I was legitimately proud of Stugat's last week, not just because he went up to WFAN and dominated New York's for-tradio, like made an impact upon arrival. But also because he could go in carelessly because he's conquered the medium enough that W.F.A.N. is doing Stugots no favors by having him in. Stugots is doing W.F.A.N. a favor, by strolling by as someone who made in Miami something that used to be in New York and he could go in
Starting point is 00:01:26 totally confidently with, I made it in this game, I've done all your jobs. I was thrilled to be there, I was and it was a great opportunity but had I gone in there and I think I said this on the air like 10 years ago, I would have been nervous, I would have treated it like an audition, I would not have been myself, I would have been trying to impress everyone with my Yankee knowledge and my Metz knowledge. And here I am at 51. And if they ever invite me back again, I hope they do. That'd be great.
Starting point is 00:01:54 But if they don't, I'm fine with that as well. And that's the way I kind of treated it. If they don't, he is conquered the medium. That's a dying sports medium. This is not. And he has done so so much that he has thousands of dollars in the corners of his electronic accounts that he doesn't know how to get to because ignorance is bliss. And the people in FAN Wall Street has really devoured everything. Journalism, entertainment,
Starting point is 00:02:17 everything. It's awful if you're paying attention to what's happening in Wall Street. They just have devoured everything. Stugots is conquer, Wall Street. He goes to WFA and he just brags about, yes, I've got tens of thousands of dollars in my seat cushions. I am in charge, so I'm going with a bunch of friends, and I'm in charge of getting the four tickets for every ship. I don't know why I'm in charge.
Starting point is 00:02:40 I should not be a gentleman in people. You're the only one. Exactly right. And so it's pricey. And my wife starts to notice all the money that's being zapped out of our checking account because that's what my wife notices. She doesn't notice anything else other than our balance. Right.
Starting point is 00:02:55 You, your interest. Don't care about me. Right. No, it's just the money. Yes, just the money. So I said, hey, don't worry about it. I know it's expensive. Everyone has sent me Venmos. So the money should be back into the money. Yes, just the money. So I said, hey, don't worry about it. I know it's expensive. Everyone has sent me Venmo's. So the money should be back into the account.
Starting point is 00:03:08 She goes, we haven't received a Venmo from any of your friends during this entire time that you've been purchasing, then take it. And I said, well, what are you talking about? I get an alert that they have Venmoed me all the time. So she said, let me look at your phone. I had no idea that when someone Venmo's you money, it goes straight to your bank account. Nope. I had no idea there was a Venmo bank
Starting point is 00:03:31 that there was another step that you had to do once it reached the Venmo app. And that step is taking it from the app to the checking accounts. So we were out like 20 some thousand dollars. I'm not joking. And it was in Venmo, it was in Venmo. Oh my God. For months. Oh, so then I started scrolling back and realized I never transferred a Venmo from Venmo to my Checking Account. In your entire time that you've had Venmo.
Starting point is 00:04:00 We had more money in my Venmo account than we did in my Checking Account. Ah! How? I don't know. Two guts. I mean, you just have that much money, huh? Well, no, I was buying tickets, as I said, for all the dead shows, four tickets every
Starting point is 00:04:15 show. I went to, you guys know how many shows I went to all of them. And that was very pricey. I did not realize when people Venmo me back, there was another step. And to be honest, that's on Venmo. I mean, Venmo, it has to go straight to my bank account. I should not have to hit another button, okay? Once someone sends me a Venmo.
Starting point is 00:04:32 I should have to do anything, and it was just sitting there. It was like finding money in your jeans. It was incredible. I agree with you, Stu. You're right, there's no like, they don't remind you, hey, why did you get your money out? They're running a scam over there. I like it.
Starting point is 00:04:44 Why don't we, we can do this? Yes, two guts. This is actually a great analogy. This is the modern day version of finding money in your jeans. And you just found 20 grand in paybacks, though. I mean, Jesus. That is insane. Billy, I keep looking at Billy.
Starting point is 00:05:00 Billy finds none of this fun. No, I'm getting sick of him if we're gonna be honest with you. Yeah. Oh no, I'm mutiny inside the building. Yeah, it's too long, that's it. Okay, well let's. Football season's getting started. I'm getting myself prepared. It's a whole thing.
Starting point is 00:05:12 All right, well Billy is every right to be sick of me. I mean, let's talk about this Billy. Because I saw that in the middle of all that laughter, you're like really still got $20,000. That's a lot of money man. $20,000, and I think. Billy, you're acting like still got $20,000. That's a lot of money, man. $20,000, and I think that's not what I'm going to do. Billy, you're acting like it's $20,000. Like I laid out $20,000 for my friends to go to Dead Shows.
Starting point is 00:05:32 $200 a ticket, four tickets to show, $800 bucks, $600 back to me. It's not about the amount in the Venmo account. It's the, you had so much in the checking account that you don't notice when the 20 grand is missing. $20,000. You're just like, I had so much in the checking account that you don't notice. Yeah, that's the one. That's 20 grand is missing. $20,000. You're just like, I assumed it's in there.
Starting point is 00:05:49 The number's big enough. I just assumed his wife handled all of that because she's afraid of him stealing it all and putting in came an island account. Shh. Can't steal my own money. It's mine. I'm assuming that Stugat's pays no attention to what's happening in the checking account at all because Abby knows both the electronics and that Stugat's can't be trusted with money.
Starting point is 00:06:09 So she has to keep an eye on every dollar I would assume. But Billy, what I saw there was a whole lot of people laughing because he's the clown prince of crowning WFA and you don't seem happy for him as someone who's been an integral part of developing major parts. The character that stands before you today, who, without Billy's help in the background, pulling the puppet strings, wouldn't have $20,000 to forget about. Wouldn't sound like he sounded on FAN, where he is free and easy going up there with total confidence and just maximum being himself because as Lucy and Charlotte learn, it's not a character. The bit that I love the most was the what he looks like bit.
Starting point is 00:06:52 Yeah, so if people aren't familiar with that, it was just you'd look at an athlete and then you would say what do you look like? So for example, I don't want to give away the one that I was. Do you have like a favorite one off the top of your head? I don't, to be honest, we do it with him, Kirchian, because he loves the game so much. And we've had so many great ones over the years, so many that I can't remember a single one right now.
Starting point is 00:07:17 I know. That's on Giannaudy. I mean, he's got to give me a heads up. That's the topic he's going to. I know I've hosted this show for 15 years But that was the final hour second day. I was exhausted. I was hungover. I was out the entire night the night before just expert filling here Yeah, that's do got he's got nothing. Oh, it's my favorite No, that's what the challenge one Billy's not around. No, it's two guys is defense though
Starting point is 00:07:40 If you're gonna ask him a question have a follow up, you know what I mean like he's look It was basically a two day interview of some guts, you know I mean so like Gio needs to have something to give him know who you're interviewing I don't to be honest with you. We were back Billy. Yeah, thank you. Could you name a single looks like even here now? Like I eventually got to peak Carol tennis coach I did that one Maggie Gray sent in a bunch. I eventually got to peak Carol, tennis coach. I did that one. Maggie Gray sent in a bunch. She was listening to the show.
Starting point is 00:08:08 She knew more than I did. She host with, you just have, she's a national host on CBS Sports Radio. She's just great. She's with McLeven, right? Yeah, McLeven, I didn't ask her to text them in. She just happened to text them in. She was producing you from afar.
Starting point is 00:08:22 She sent them to Geo. You couldn't remember any of them. How do we do that for 15 years? This is expert feeling though here. Let's listen to this. It's not expert feeling. It's just like, it's just, it's just, it's just, it's just, it's just, it's just, it's just, it's just, it's just, it's just, it's so, it's so, it's, it's many great ones over the years, so many that I
Starting point is 00:08:45 can't remember a single one right now. One of the reasons that I loved so much to got to arriving again, conquering King of New York, is how funny it is that he knows so little about everything. And has listened so poorly around here that one of the most creative things we've ever done, he couldn't remember a single one, and even now a weekend later, he said, yeah, Maggie Gray sent me a bunch because he just seems to always want producers trailing him
Starting point is 00:09:20 to do his work for it, so he doesn't have to do it because he's a very big star. Really? That's the most honest moment you heard anywhere in sports media in the last century right there. Really? How do I get clicks? How do I get ratings? No, not the really? Yes, that one not the fake body not the one. No, not the characters been doing it for 20 years and could pretend Look, man. Really? no one's better at pretending He's interested in what the gas bag next to him is saying better than stew got really
Starting point is 00:09:50 He could fake it with the best of Hall of Famer Hall of Famer really that at that like that sounds interested right he seems yeah No, this is interesting really yes That sounds interested, right? He seems to. No, this is interesting. Really? Yes. That's really, really interesting.
Starting point is 00:10:08 Yes. And Bill. And Bill. And Bill. And you're done with it, Billy. You're done. You know. Billy, I love you, man.
Starting point is 00:10:16 That's not cool. Yeah. I do. Why don't you let him add that $20,000 you and want? Wow. Oh my God. That's where I draw the line. No, no, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:10:28 Now you've gone too far. I'm making me care about others. I'll care about you, but send you money. Really? He's unbelievable. What does corporate greed sound like? Really. Really?
Starting point is 00:10:44 What does greed in general, like demons who make fun of other demons for being greedy no no Chris no really that is the expert fillers to gods there are different sounds here Chris okay play along with me would you it's a good tune we could can play it together. You ready? What do you have? What do you, yeah, it's okay. The fake really, the old, really, no, no.
Starting point is 00:11:11 Can you slow down? Um, that, what is that? What is that? That's me reacting to this. Uh, um, why has now Billy come over to try and help you? He wants to create more chaos. He's not trying to help you. I think Billy knows what you're looking for.
Starting point is 00:11:26 Is Billy trying to help us? He's trying to make it worth. Billy knows what he's looking for. He just trying to bother you. We're fighting for our lives over here, Dan. Get off my plate. That's what he's looking for. Billy, Billy, you don't seem happy for Stugant.
Starting point is 00:11:42 You don't. I do, I just also feel bad, you know? For me? Yeah, a little bit. Because I feel like you went up there, but it was one of those things, they're kind of laughing at you. Really, you know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:11:55 But they don't want to let you know they're laughing at you. Really? I feel bad. I don't think you do. A little bit. So wait, but wouldn't it stand a reason in the media aging age that if Chris Russo is going to age into that, that Stu gots, we're laughing with Mad Dog too, aren't we? Isn't that why he's on television?
Starting point is 00:12:14 Like, that's how that age. So why wouldn't Stu gots in his 50s as the same character be sort of that? This has happened a few times recently with the article that was written. Billy doesn't feel like people. I think Billy does care about me. I think. I should have been proud of that. This has happened a few times recently with the article that was written. Billy doesn't feel like people. I think Billy does care about me. I think. I'm proud of that article. Right, I don't think Billy likes
Starting point is 00:12:31 the way people are portraying me. Yeah, like a joke, kind of. You know, like they were up there for two days, but like if there was an opening this week, would they call you? I don't know. He's had all your jobs. We need to start a petition now.
Starting point is 00:12:42 Our audience, we need to petition F and understand what they had in their offices last week because I don't think they understand. I don't, I don't think they understand. Really? Don Lebatard. Chris Cody does an impression, just be careful. Dangerous game here. This is a dangerous game. I don't want to play this game.
Starting point is 00:13:00 No, you were saying, man, I could do such a great game. Oh, I don't want to play this game. He's like, man, I can talk to you. This is who we're going to trust. I mean, you do it. Let's let him mean do it, I think do such a great Oh, I don't want to play this game. He's like man I This is who we're gonna trust me. Let's let a mean do it. I think I think you could do it Chris because you did a great Charles Barkley your one for one there did no one just hear the segment we just did with the mean we cannot be taking Judgment is not the House from the local drunk on whether or not you
Starting point is 00:13:22 Should do the impersonation of a black man stumbling over his words like you don't see the bad There was most of moody moody moody moody moody Careful man, we got it like we cannot do this. It's too close to the line This is where the line is something legitimately funny can't be funny because we're scared our ginger's gonna do something racist by accident carry the hell on Dan Rachel Dan the line is where we feel alive though this is the dan lebatar show with the stugats i've been remiss here stugats the first hour of the show not discussing the biggest story in sports over the weekend hour of the show, not discussing the biggest
Starting point is 00:14:05 story in sports over the weekend. And I'm not sure if the American women losing to me was as interesting a story as, oh my God, so that's the reaction to them losing. Those great champions, we're in a laugh at them at the end, and we're going to discuss whether Megan Rapinoe, like she called called it dark comedy to end your career that way It's like such a such a stomach punch for her to laugh and for you to think she doesn't care For you to make the argument because you don't like her politics that she's laughing because she doesn't care Where the reason that team is as good as it is is because of how much she cares if any team deserves a pass deserves to be knocked out in the
Starting point is 00:14:44 Round of 16 and receive very little criticism if any, it is that team. With Megan Rapino, I don't mind that she laughed in. I don't care. I'm just telling you, in that moment, you can't smile, you can't laugh. Well, but this is not, you can't do it. Okay, but this is what I would say to you
Starting point is 00:15:00 because you are nothing if not predictable on this front. I, and those are the coolagans there. We'll get to them in a second. They're part of the Levitron Friends Network, you because you are nothing if not predictable on this front. And those are the coolagans there. We'll get to them in a second. They're part of the Levitro and Friends Network, Metal Arc Media, Christian Polanco, and Alexis Guerrero. They have a good time covering all this stuff, but just to circle back for a second, because it is a bit insulting to simply say that they deserve no criticism.
Starting point is 00:15:23 Now, their coach was kind of terrible and didn't trust young players, and they looked old and injured. You could criticize, and you could also, you could also criticize that they lost, and they gave us America, the expectations of winning. They can be a symbol for winning and have lost in a really terrible fashion that looked like they didn't care very much. And I know that they cared, but because they've been dominant and suddenly were kind of bad, it looked like they didn't care. It looked like they were going through the motions, or it's really hard to be a symbol for America in that kind of fight, fighting for women, to make the entire sport so strong that now women in other countries are just as good as you are
Starting point is 00:16:03 because of how you put this sport on the map in this country. They play their best game of the tournament against Sweden, and it certainly looked like they cared after they realized there were no more games to be played. I mean, they cared. They were emotional, they were crying, they cared. Except Rapinoe, I don't know what she was doing. You didn't watch any of this, thank you, Billy. Oh, I watched all of them. Christian, let's start with you. What are you in the morning? What are your thoughts? Not on the game, but on the reaction breakdown, the reaction to me because I've been not
Starting point is 00:16:31 surprised that they've been weaponized, but the glee, the anti-American glee of like, I don't like the politics of these people. So I'm happy that they lost. People have been waiting 12 years to have this exact moment. They wanted them to lose in 2015. They wanted them to lose in 2019. And all the, really the moment of that went viral when Megan Rapinoe said, when they asked her, hey, do you wanna, if you win the World Cup,
Starting point is 00:16:58 would you go to the White House? That she went, she said, I ain't going to the White House, right? That after that moment, she was a target and people have been waiting so long, but it's difficult to criticize as much as you want when they keep winning. They won the last two world cups.
Starting point is 00:17:16 They have earned plenty of respect. This, and you made it absolutely great point. They were so dominant and so successful that the other countries were simply like, yo, we gotta step it up and they have. And this is the World Cup where all the other teams are really, really good and it was a bit of a smack in the face
Starting point is 00:17:35 to the US Women's National team, the fact that whoa, the level of competition is so high that this is the countries that they faced. This was the competition that they faced. And now that I knew this was gonna happen whether they won or not. But before the World Cup started, I was like, look, the tweets are coming.
Starting point is 00:17:54 People are gonna be attacking Blue Hair Repina and blah, blah, blah. And it happened exactly as we all kind of expected. But it's not surprising at all, but it doesn't take away from the, the kind, the inspiration that the US Women's National Team has brought to, to American soccer, to the country, and to a lot of life people.
Starting point is 00:18:14 You know what, Chris, thank you. He, thank you. He's rambling. You asked the question. Did they choke or not? Did they choke or not? No. No, no.
Starting point is 00:18:24 This was the, this is the the coaches fault, not their fault. And I could care less about the reaction. What do I care about 99.9% of the people reacting this? Do have never seen a game of soccer. Couldn't tell you any other player besides maybe Megan Rapinoe or Alex Morgan. They have no clue what the rules were. They have no clue that it was the coaches fault putting these people in the bat in bad positions. Really, it's, yo, it's a chef who got in great ingredients. It was way out of his depth and didn't know how to cook it. That's exactly what you saw.
Starting point is 00:18:49 These are people that are simply what? They're jerking off the Fox News and you can't do that in a small town. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Ejaculants, we're not necessary here. You did not mean to shame Midwestern ejaculators.
Starting point is 00:19:04 What is that with you? Bro, Jesus is watching. And so am I. What are you doing? This is planning a porn hub categories. I don't know. Like let them out of their fun. But why wearers go back to NASCAR?
Starting point is 00:19:17 Stop worrying about my sport. Why are we blaming the coach? The coach didn't miss a peek. I mean, no, you have to start there. If you look, if you watch the games and if you really focus on the sport, the coach didn't miss a pk i mean no you have to start there if you look if you watch the games and if you really focus on the sport the the the coach had just made poor poor decisions from the lineups from the formations have rightly didn't shoot a three-point or either right does he not get any credit it's a Mars i mean it wasn't even close right it's ridiculous that you got to
Starting point is 00:19:42 pick the order you got to pick the order of how these players go up. And why would you substitute two minutes before knowing that two minutes into a game, they're about to go to the most pressure filled penalty kicks of their entire career. It's stupid. And why would you put why would you bring two centerbacks and only play one of them and keep one on the bench the entire time? And it's really not played as a dynamic midfielder. Yo, Ashley Sanchez going home with the cleanest cleats in the history of the sport, but she should have been out on the field. It's ridiculous from the beginning. He should have been fired before this game. And we're not saying that the US women's national team shouldn't be criticized because
Starting point is 00:20:13 we do that on our show all the time. It is simply that they shouldn't be criticized because they are activists. They shouldn't be criticized simply because they want, they fought for equal pay That's really the all our comments right now are oh, I'm glad they lost Repino's a cancer to this team and it's like bro. They wouldn't have won the last two world cups without her So it makes no sense to hear stuff like that. It's such a perfect thing though for them to be for 25 years a Symbol for blazing strength in sports pioneering for little girls a generation of little girls for them to end up when they lose it's an honor
Starting point is 00:20:53 to have america divided and spitting at them as representatives for sports strength and should man let's be honest about this the women have been so much better as activists all over sports than the men so much stronger. They started that. Like they, they, and to have an anti-American sentiment, laugh with Glee at them losing, honestly, in sports that they mattered like that, it's an honor. You've divided America because you're that much of a leader and you are that dominant that you made people pay attention
Starting point is 00:21:27 to a champion in women's soccer when this country did not care about that 25 years ago. Like they're the biggest badass ever. Of course they should get equal pay. They've been better than the men for 20 goddamn years. That's facts. In fact, yo, they inspired an entire generation of girls. It just all happened.
Starting point is 00:21:44 Those girls played for Sweden, Spain, England, France. I mean, we got bodied by girls that we that are team inspired is crazy. Alex Morgan's washed. The Dominique's got their criticism. Dominique, what are these adlibs that I'm here? No, it's not an adlib. Dominique has strong criticism. He's not wrong either. I mean, you can't hold on to the past. Like Alex Morgan in the center doesn't make sense when you got Trinity Rodman and Sophie Smith and a listen to him. I look like what are we going to finish? I look, I watch this is to me a little aggressive, but I will say this. I think the fact that in the first two matches, we saw how Alex Morgan
Starting point is 00:22:26 played and for the coach to not say like, I see what she's given me. Let me try something different. That's on the coach. If your star player is not giving you the results that you need, you make a change. This is why it's so odd to me that when the US men's national team were playing in You know in 2022 in the ment world cup Burrhalter this you guys were on the you guys did a show talking about how Burrhalter made all these crazy decisions And why didn't georena play and then all the drama with the family and then when the US women's national team play It's these women don't have the heart and blah blah blah and it's like, yo, what about the coach?
Starting point is 00:23:06 He can't have some say too. Also, Dominique, you were a cornerback. How good is a Y receiver if they're not getting good passes? How which of our forwards did really well? No one. We scored against Vietnam and then we was trash after that because we were getting no service without Rose Lavelle or a dynamic midfield that we were getting nothing. All I received was a terrible one. I'm covering them. There you go. Say I do go. A lot of people let's break this down with some expertise though because it there is a fine line between a coach trusting champions who have done it before because you ride with them until the end because you know how strong those women are that Rapino doesn't deserve to go out like that. You know what she's carried for 20 years across America like she's She's an unbelievable badass and and she knew the internet was falling on her blue hair as soon as she missed that kick
Starting point is 00:23:58 Oh, look, this is how my career ends my career as activist is I blew the world cup But you got a trust You got to trust the women who brought you there even even if you want change of young people the women who have the experience of it They're we are the only ones who have women who can play in those games who have experience winning those games They're saying they're only trusting her with the pk They're not playing her the rest of the game. They don't trust her with the rest of the game Just when it comes to a bk. Well, look I agree with that look make make a repino and even her substitution of the game. They don't trust her with the rest of the game just when it comes to a beaker. Well, look, I agree with that. Look, Megan Rapinoe and even her substitution into the game, um, it was probably, you know, I could see going in a different direction.
Starting point is 00:24:33 Megan Rapinoe, yes, it is even when she's playing in, and WSL, she's not playing these full 90 minutes. So we understand that, you know, I could understand if a coach made the decision of, like, look, this is where you are in your career and this is how we're going to use you. As far as the penalty kick, that's, that's just how it is. It like, I mean, they're the cruelest part of sports where you don't know what's going to happen. But Black, Black on the left, the head coach for the USMIS national team had every opportunity to make substitutions in, in the group stage matches where only made one substitution in one game takes way too long to make substitution.
Starting point is 00:25:11 This is why Alex Morgan, I trust one of our better players. Yes, she should start the game, but maybe at the 60th minute, we try something else if something isn't working, not at the 85th minute minute, which is common from Blocko, just substitutions weren't, weren't happening. So those are the really like analytical, very specific things that are frustrating, but this is a, a coach that I don't think will be with the US Women's Dental team much longer. Transitions of our fire. Stay there gentlemen. We will come back in just a second because I want to get more expertise about
Starting point is 00:25:46 this. This is the story of the sports weekend. And, you know, I have been surprised, no matter what your politics are. An anti-American sentiment making an appearance because the sports team lost, a sports team that you didn't care about and we're only watching just to see it lose. It felt deeply un-American. Can't be too surprised by it, but it felt wrong to have glee about that. We'll come back with more next. Don Lebertard. Ravens good double up the colds and they are good against every team except the Steelers. I mean. So that's a 14 point win there for the Raven. Yeah. Double up to touch that spoo gots
Starting point is 00:26:25 I think double up is a score like if the Colta have 10 and you double them up you scored 20 I don't think double up you do it. I do it differently. Okay, but I don't think that double them up like you explain it to me You have your way have my way I understand, but that's not technically doubling up like I think you use the phrase wrong or something Happen double up plus four. Yes, exactly. Okay, that's what he meant, of course. To touch down. You never cease to amaze me. He's amazing. He really is.
Starting point is 00:26:50 He's breath-taking in his stupidity. This is the Dalabatar show with the Stugats. And this is a hard, guys. Like, I mean, we can be critical of this team and I think that it's somewhat disrespectful when we try to act like they don't deserve criticism. Like we can criticize them. Criticizing them for celebrating seems weird to me. Criticizing for how often they smile seems weird to me.
Starting point is 00:27:17 But criticizing for their performance, I think, feels right. But the transitions are hard part to me is where obviously in a state of transition and flux and it seems like the best players, the most impactful players, the fastest, most explosive players were the young players and it's time to transition in them. It's hard to have that transition, but that seemed like the problem. The people who were impacting the game were not repinos. I guess Lizzy Iran was really impactful. She's not like a super young player,
Starting point is 00:27:46 but all the best players seem like the younger players and we just were trying to hold on to that. Look at you breaking this down. I know. I think it's, I think it's what the uncomfortable truth is that the grass that the American women's team have had on the dominance of the sport. You saw in real time lose, we lost grass for that. We lost our dominance over the rest of the world in this sport. Other leagues have taken a stronghold. The WSL in England in particular, Barcelona's women's team is absolutely incredible. And the Barcelona Academy have developed incredible players. We're still playing like it's nine, we're still developing players like it's 1995 out there.
Starting point is 00:28:24 Going to these independent academies and, you know, just trying to develop superior athletes as opposed to footballers. And you're seeing in real time what's happening. The truth truth be told is we should be ushering away from that old guard and moving on to a younger, more dynamic group. I've mentioned as to Sanchez Trinity Robin has been mentioned on this show before or on this on the segment. We've got to move towards the youth and let them start to develop themselves as a unit and as a team. What you saw out there was 11 individual players, which used to be good enough for the US
Starting point is 00:28:56 to win. That no longer is the case. You need to be a team. Yeah, and just add to that, I mean, I, we said this on our show. It goes back to the coaching. I mean, I think it's a, and not just the coaching in this particular, for the US Women's National Team,
Starting point is 00:29:10 it goes to the, how do we, how do we coach those youth players? Why are the, why are the young players so good, right? It says something to the individual talent and the individual coaching that they've received and maybe in academies and college and stuff like that. But then when you watch the Spanish national team,
Starting point is 00:29:29 they are 100% look like Barcelona, you know, Neymar, Messi, Luis Suarez, they play a chave, they play like Iniesta. That is the structure and model that they are passing down to anybody that comes through the Barcelona system. So that is the thing that needs to, you know, it's difficult for us to kind of have that and it goes into a bigger conversation about how coaching and academies and pay to play
Starting point is 00:29:58 and being a kid playing soccer is incredibly expensive for families in this country. But yeah, that's a whole other conversation. But without a doubt, you, you, you, you, you need both. You need to obviously veteran leadership and, and young players, but it goes back to what I said, it, it, it, it, it, you, you, you, you need to make those decisions that, that, that, to have those younger players on the field, because this, a lot of young players that didn't see any time at the World Cup. And it's truly a shame.
Starting point is 00:30:23 I will tell you that listening to you guys is like listening to myself. And now I know I Dan gets very, very annoyed and frustrated with me. And I'm proud of you, especially one of you said the coach had been fired before the game, not after the game, before the game, which is an outstanding take. I'm going to remind you guys, Rapinoe hits that pk and she normally does. We're not having any of these conversations today, not one of them. Coach.
Starting point is 00:30:47 That's not exactly true. No, no, no, no, no, no. They have advanced, coach put the right person in at the right time, KG veteran, she's been there before, been in that spot, that's why he put her on the team. That's the conversation we're having today. Well, she should have, she should have made it, right?
Starting point is 00:31:04 And that's why she was laughing after missing it because she could not believe that she missed it because for years, I can't even remember the last time Megan Rapinoe missed a penalty. She was, she's the designated penalty taker all the time, the last 12 years essentially. And she never misses and it's such a crazy end of the story that the fact that she missed that all but no So look other people missed right Sophie Smith is sucks a young player mr. Opportunity Kelly O'Hara
Starting point is 00:31:36 A veteran who who should have done better there also miss and even if you if you look at the in the after the game The camera was on her and Kelly how was like she was like f me how did I miss it she couldn't it was just unfathomable that the US was even in that position but again the game shouldn't have even gone to penalties because we absolutely dominated that game. So with the US national team being eliminated I was watching this to root for them who should I root for now? I need to have a team that I can trail.
Starting point is 00:32:07 You know, yeah, give me pitch me on who my new team is. Wait, this thing still goes after US loses. Yeah. Straight to 50% of the country. No. I depends. What are you? What do you want to give me an idea?
Starting point is 00:32:22 Like, do you hate colonizers? Because if so, England's not the one for you. I'm very anti colonizer. There you go. All right. So we're, I would say then I would maybe like a Jamaica or Colombia. They're playing each other. So whoever wins that game, that's who you root for. Or Japan. Japan is wavy as hell. Yeah. Yeah. There's a lot of fun teams to watch. This has been an interesting world cup, but there's just like a lot of different character and it's not just simply, you know, the US dominating through.
Starting point is 00:32:49 So, yeah, for me, I always say like, I'm one of my best friends that got me into the sport is Colombian, so I'm like, Colombia, Ryder, Dai, when Colombia, the man missed the World Cup, I was like, all right, well, now I know the US is not going to probably win, so who am I going to support? But Colombia is my team. Who are players? Players that we need to watch most exciting because I know the I know the women's team. Our
Starting point is 00:33:12 women's team fairly well. And I got educated on it before. I mean, watch those games. So I feel like I don't know who to watch. Like I see colors. I see dirties. I see flags. But I'm watching the game and nobody seems all that like stand out impressive to me. Are there players that we need to be watching? Yeah, I would have told you, Lauren flags, but I'm watching the game and nobody seems all that like stand out impressive to me. Are there players that we need to be what? Yeah, I would have told you Lauren James, but she just went surfing on another player's spot. She's probably after the tournament.
Starting point is 00:33:32 It's ridiculous. If I may, gentlemen, if I may cut you off very quickly, Alexis, I need to, as a part of the libertarian friends family here, I need to know if somewhere, I don't know what your partnership, what your history is exactly. But if you get very frustrated because Christian's talking too much, like he's just, he's talking in great deal and he won't shut up
Starting point is 00:33:56 and there aren't any windows for you to get in there and do jazz hands. Or do you have such good chemistry and a lifelong friendship allows you to tolerate that your partner is a bit of a gas bag? I don't know dog you just interrupted me. So maybe it's not all Christian He tends to do that. We support each other with our strengths and weaknesses, Dan Yeah, no, that's that's guuano on guano violence. Dan out out there you
Starting point is 00:34:22 I just I just wanted to hear something from Alexis and I feel like I haven't heard enough from him because it was a pretty important game that was played yesterday that echoes societally and I was curious about his thoughts. Hey, listen, I love Christian. The kid's a bit of a yipper, but I love him. He's gonna yet.
Starting point is 00:34:41 Yeah, what are you gonna do? Really came in here and cleaned it up damn thanks? Fine I Look at the shirt I'm wearing this is ridiculous. Yeah, and if they would have sent me one that fit I'd also MLS cheating for messy. Yeah. Oh Is the MLS cheating for messy. Yeah. Oh suit The other team scored a goal for yesterday. Dude. No, that's
Starting point is 00:35:09 That part fun go. I was gonna ask you that on today's show, bro. That was crazy Oh, so you know how hard I would love to get an assist from messy. I don't care what team I'm playing for Okay, what Jersey I'm wearing bro. That was crazy. Yeah. Are they cheating for him? I don't know, but now I'm too self conscious to make my point because that Levittar called me out. Yes, just use words. That's always I left in the segment. I mean, in the defense, it should got a lot more fun when he came here and started flipping over tables. Well, thank you, Dominique, for citing a certain expertise I have to know when a show is thinking into the quicksand because it happened so often around here. But you have to mix, you have to mix the game analysis that the nerds care about to cast a wider net with
Starting point is 00:35:55 everything that's happening with this team which is really small to say oh this person should have been starting that person should have been starting this person should have been pks when they are for a quarter of a century a symbol of an American champion that as great as it was on the field has a resonance larger than that off of it and many times larger even though they were the epic empire of teaching shut up Dan other people got to say stuff. He's a writer. I was waiting for it. I was waiting for it. I'm going to do this. Why don't we do the hard network out on Dan bro. What's going on? So you interrupt me to do that. So messy or cheating form or what? I mean if we are I'm down with it. It's been fun. There's a lot more fun when Beckham came over, when Ebra came over, they weren't putting up numbers
Starting point is 00:36:50 like Messy is. So if we got a cheat to do it, I'm all for it. I mean, first of all, they're doing it against Mexican team. So it's not just Emma. They haven't even, he hasn't even played an Emma. Yeah, this is what leaks cup, which, you know, up the leaks cup. Yo, this has gone viby as hell. But I will say the league should be cheating for messy
Starting point is 00:37:05 This is a sitting o'lenthiny. There's no promotion of relegation. Who cares? We all came to see messy if you score if you score against into Miami You get a red card, you know Why don't this the messy league soccer, bro? Well, I don't agree. I don't agree with you cheating for messy I will say this. Yeah, look, he is such a great player that he's going to probably have more luck than others, but more than anything. He is banging in these free kicks that are so insanely difficult. That has nothing to do with luck at that point. He is just literally that outstanding of a player.
Starting point is 00:37:41 No control on the ball. What happened? He said remote control on the ball. Lucy just whispered in my ear just for me too many words Wow, she wasn't mean enough to do it publicly she just whispered it in the shadows and then ran off Gentlemen, thank you. We appreciate the time This is their wordy podcast cool. you. With a very wordy Christian. What are you thinking for? And Alexis Carrero, the bearded nightmare. Thank you, gentlemen. We appreciate the expertise. Cheers, guys. No problem. Lucy, why are you hiding?
Starting point is 00:38:17 I didn't. I wasn't supposed to repeat that. I betrayed you. I betrayed you. That was Chris. Betrayed you I betrayed you uh that was Chris So I just a bullet for no reason I'm so not used to you guys talking in my ear Chris sounded like Lucy I thought you meant impossible I know it is impossible and it does not seem fundamentally possible Dan throws Lucy under the bus Lucy throws Chris under bus and it was Billy
Starting point is 00:38:50 It's always Billy it wasn't me this time. It's always Billy. He did My bad Dan it was me But that was a fun only appearance for the Cooligan's ever Miss those guys Where do you think went network you think they're going to next? Dan Patrick looking for a soccer show, you think? ESPN is not hiring.
