Starting point is 00:00:43 buy man American History podcast where each week I Dave Anthony read a story from American history to my other man sorry I'm Gareth Reynolds who has no idea what the topic is going to be about I think we're getting a little loose with parts of the show and I'm trying to define it more for the listener yeah I just you know bi-weekly I know we had some issues with bilinguals worked because of the Mexican dollop L dollop but yeah I'm not so sure a lot of people would like I get a lot of letters and they want more definition of by hand written by its history podcast we get we get handwritten letters there is
Starting point is 00:01:42 dollop I hope this letter reaches you Ratley that's right yes excuse the em is from the candle okay yeah if you if you feel confident about how you're doing the top of the show still then stick with it I'll just say this I'll just well I'll just say this I never thought I'd say I miss when you were giving yourselves your little occupations but I think that was like giving a dog a chew toy and it was like good you had your thing and then you left the rest of it alone and then I feel like you know the it's the intro I mean it doesn't need to be crazy could just be straightforward how it's
Starting point is 00:02:20 helpful it's a new like the magic this is your first episode like what is happening right now because you're crazy and then I have to do this it's just it's a lot well that reminds me that I am also a labradoodle daddy and called it quote is jam-packed jam-packed I'm the fucking hippo guy okay my name is Gary what is it for fun and this is not going to come to tiggly pod okay now hit him with the puppy you both present sick arguments actually Gareth we have a tour coming up in land called Australia we'll be arriving on
Starting point is 00:03:17 your beautiful shores and then staying for a while in in October a beautiful hotel and we're both vaccinated so we're not bringing anything we're not we're coming clean and and then you know and then we'll do shows for a little while so you know come come there's Sydney there's Canberra I think is it's on the list it hasn't been officially gone on sale but you can get on the wait list same thing with our New Zealand dates and then we have Melbourne Sydney Adelaide Perth I think so Brisbane Brisbane Brisbane yeah we're Brisbane's in the mix too so yeah so check go to our website adult podcast
Starting point is 00:04:03 calm and then Dave I also will be in Hawaii in Maui May 31st 7 p.m. at the playground comedy club in Hawaii May 31st come join me let's party it's gonna be great first show back so let's do it oh and we shall same May 14th we have a live virtual dollop with looped live you can go to our socials or go to looped live and you can find information on it March 11th 1914 year of our Lord Jesus Christ I'm yeah I don't usually you say usually you say a prayer at this point or there's a I mean I sometimes say something I'm not gonna play into expectation okay allow me to be me thank you very much wow so we're gonna start
Starting point is 00:05:00 out this episode treating my co-host is hostile can I promise no absolutely not two keys are not permission granted that's just not Murray Louise Jotter was born in Weaverville California okay Murray yeah Murray okay mr. a y Murray okay now what happened was a clerk at I suppose the hospital wherever this happens transpose the a and the R on her birth certificate so her official name was Murray instead of Mary oh okay there we go slight just a slight slip up oopsie poopsie you have one you have one job when you're doing birth it's not and Mary's not like one that really like you
Starting point is 00:05:57 know like how do I what is this new name like that's a pretty simple one right out of the box like oh it's Mary are you sure they wanted Murray hundred percent they said Murray they were very clear it's Murray here's Murray how come she's already coming out of lights and smoke well this is Murray this isn't Mary Murray two nights only Murray Murray Louise Jotter and at the bottom of her certificate says I fucking quit whoops last day on the job drive okay all right so so she ends up going by Lois if you can imagine is that because that's her middle name her middle names Louise okay her first name is Murray okay yeah
Starting point is 00:06:47 so you drop the Murray there were many times in my life where I wanted to get away from Gareth it was strange but Murray is even you know Murray's while Gareth is you know objectionably not necessarily a name Murray not a name her father taught forestry at the University of Michigan her mom's family was loaded with engineers okay so she's coming side there are science people sure so as a child Lois very into botany as most kids are just love plants yeah Lewis would say her desire to become a botanist happened one day when she was seven and her father pointed out an aster niggundo as you know the box elder maple tree man
Starting point is 00:07:30 that that for a lot of people is the gateway tree that is it's a remarkable tree there's a lot there's a lot of there's a lot of good ones but that leads to heavier pines that leads to maples a birch becomes a you know it's hard to do that and not ever want to try birch so you know a lot of people but a lot of people that a lot that bloat the first time you have you know you get a rip of that you go whoa yeah tight rip of the aster niggundo and you're just like man I am bow down out now now now now wow wow bow down out now bow bow fucking run it through a forest run it yeah I sure sure as a team she would
Starting point is 00:08:21 roam the woods on Sundays checking out all the plants I just I wish I like I remember when my how old is she when she's going to garden when she's just when she got into trees she got it at seven and then for the rest of her so I remember I remember at seven teachers main complaint about me was that I was saying to myself too much sure and and I've referenced this before on the show that was the age also where I drew a square and I thought it was really good and I went to show my mother and I just that it was maybe the first time I registered with disappointment was when she was like so upset that I was so
Starting point is 00:09:00 proud of this I was like look a square and she was like oh my god he's seven that's a hard moment where you're where you're like oh god my kids an idiot like that's a hard I don't know if that's a fight that's not necessarily the label I think and you're thinking like what is this kid gonna do for a living how is this kid gonna survive if someone doesn't bring him food for the rest of his life is he gonna fall over dead well to be fair it was like a very well put together square so I don't think we're talking about me here so did you ever get into rectangles let's just get back to this one as team a team like they
Starting point is 00:09:37 said she roam the woods on Sundays checking out all the plants she graduates from Michigan she gets a bachelor degree in botany and biology and then she works her way towards a doctorate in biology sorry in bot in botany okay the Michigan department at that time only had two faculty members female faculty members if you can imagine that not a lot of ladies on the staff in the how 1930s how awkward I mean that just must be so awkward it's all that it's only a couple of days or that yeah yeah well if you're just one of the two you're just like oh my Jesus they are monsters they're drunk all the
Starting point is 00:10:13 time she was considered a klutz a little bit of a nerd by herself and not really into adventures even though she liked one around the woods she wasn't into like adventure ventures her mentor was El Zelda Clover we meant to call her Alexis but this goddamn nurse fucked up the birth certificate and I called her L L Zelda it's El Zada El Zada Clover El Zada El Zada I liked El Zelda better that felt yeah Spanish Zelda it does sound better right yeah it's a nice it's more fun it certainly for me conjures more memories so El Zada was a professor at the university they became friends obviously because there weren't a lot of
Starting point is 00:11:02 ladies in the area right so I think it's going to work best if we are cool to each other let's team up wear armor and walk down the hallway back to back I do you're the new teacher huh my name is Wallace just like oh my god don't make eye contact hello there I'm Greg I actually teach over in a different oath see you later I'm shirts off Tommy what's up oh my god keep walking I teach calculus keep walking I'll see you calculate her oh my god this guy so so they become friends they get an apartment together for a couple years El Zelda keeps an old Zelda El Zada was raised on a Nebraska farm but she loves
Starting point is 00:11:46 the desert in 1937 she spent the summer collecting plants in a very desolate area of Utah okay while there she's in the town of Mexican hat Utah excuse me what Utah get it together I don't know if you know this but it's actually named after a Mexican hat what is happening it's a it's Mexican we should look up why it was named Mexican hatch didn't we I mean probably yeah but it's also just like had had it how does everybody approve it that's a it's just too white there it was just every white person like that seems to make sense the name Mexican hat comes from a curiously sombrero shaped rock outcropping on the
Starting point is 00:12:27 northeast edge of town man I'll tell you what you move anywhere and a rock looks like anything you've got your name they just always are just like yeah eagle rock have you seen the eagle rock yeah it's it's looks nothing like an eagle it's a rock and they're like that's eagle rock the whole city will be based upon this rock or the remember the old man rock yeah and that was just like a calling card where was it was like New Hampshire a Connecticut yeah and it was like the calling card it was just like the city was just like we got a rock that looks like an old guy and then one day the rock was just like I'm out of here and it
Starting point is 00:13:06 just turned to dust and a city was just like what do we do and not if you ever been to cock and balls Arizona yeah that thing is actually that's the differences they made that okay so Mexican hat she's a Mexican hat she meets a river runner or a guys who go down the river on boats and do that business Norman Neville's and then I guess they're hanging out and she tells them that they should go into the Grand Canyon on mules so she can get plant specimens and he's like why don't we go on boats that's like my thing and then she agreed she's like we should take boats okay and then they start talking
Starting point is 00:13:51 about more and they go why don't we make it an expedition and invite other people to come so pretty soon the Don Harris who's a young engineer with the US geological surveys on board William Gibson an artist and photographer he's on board Elzada invites Gene Atkinson who is a 25 year old zoologist from the University of Michigan he's on board and then they realize oh it's probably not a great idea to have a bunch of dudes and a lady let's ask another lady okay cuz people will talk it's the it's the 1930s people be like really five five late five dudes on a boat and a lady really which is a great movie by the way what
Starting point is 00:14:33 what do you mean they'll talk why is that is that what is that it's it's the 1930s you can a woman can't be alone on a on a boat with five dudes right okay she is thought of as like they're just gonna be like she's sleeping with all the guys did you hear about this lady yep he loves to go on boats and bang everyone on them she's a real into it oh she loves it you know her she just goes on boats with men all that like yeah I mean that's yeah she's the boat lady at that she's the one who goes on boats oh we don't talk to her so they asked they asked Lois okay Lois is immediately up for it she had to get permission from
Starting point is 00:15:13 her dad to take a break from her thesis and then take a boat ride down the river she she's a grown adult she's like 24 but she had to ask her dad for permission yeah well I don't know you are fully grown up now but still you're 24 but I would say no people will talk about boys you do that math dad has to write a formal letter to the head of the University Botany Department who then gives permission Jesus Christ I can't even so I'm writing to you to ask who allowed my daughter to go on a boat trip yes my human daughter she's a grown up but I've granted permission but can we both can we turn keys on this what do
Starting point is 00:16:10 you say let's mean you get together and talk about my adult daughter and what she can do well honey me and your botany teacher have had a long talk and we've decided that this probably isn't the best move for you okay but you're getting married oddly enough to him hi I have a lot of problems the physical and mental so she also has to come up with $200 for expenses like everyone has to pitch in 200 bucks for the trip we've got to ensure the women so she wrote she wrote to read your dad letters about the journey and one discuss how Elzada would be there to protect her from the quote familiarities of men
Starting point is 00:16:55 okay I'm not sure what that means well it actually now is starting to really feel a little creepy so I mean I'm now like okay I'm well I want to see where this goes a little bit because I feel yeah I don't like it she she's very detailed but everything she would do with her father she even talked about the clothes she would wear quote long-sleeve shirts fitted overalls cork helmet wool socks okay so she's like I'm not gonna put the vibe out there hot pants just hot pants that's all yeah cuz it's a science expedition I'm hot yeah of course well no but the truth I mean of course like I mean that's what
Starting point is 00:17:42 you would just wear anyway so like she's where I mean about the the outfit but it's it's good I mean honestly like a cloak would probably be good a cloak and hot pants is what I'm sure so her father her father gives a thumbs up gives the 200 bucks Lois read everything she could about the Colorado River including the book down the world's most dangerous river and then stories of Powell's horrific journey which we covered here on the dollop yeah the only person who she knew and really the only person she was really close with that she told the truth to was her roommate right because she boxed up all of her possessions and
Starting point is 00:18:22 put labels on them just in case she wasn't coming back oh wow which is what we do every every yeah I mean that's that's quite a vibe for a room okay so if I don't come back at least you know where the books are this is dishes these are also fragile's this is toiletries all right well I'm Paul packed up hopefully I come back and unpack but if not this will be easy for you to get out that is like the most thoughtful roommate all right well let me just get everything together in case I pass away you know how it is all right well you know every I'm just I'm gonna go to work but everything I packed like it's all in
Starting point is 00:19:04 suitcases like a reality show so hopefully I come back if not easy out bring a new be in I I yeah I could have done it I mean I but thank you for being so considerate I just you're very welcome yeah and hopefully you can use those forks if I live but not if I'm dying all right okay this is it this was a great time that we had until the weird ending there you go it's all stacked there for you sorry about the couches too I just had to put tape over them those are mine but you'll lay on the floor I'll be back in May August hold on you put the cat in one of these yeah the cat was on the couch which is mine take
Starting point is 00:19:46 care going on a trip far away now the Michigan student newspaper wrote up a front-page story about the the journey a photographer from the Detroit News came and took pictures as they loaded the gear into the car and then on June 7th they got into Atkinson's car and they drove for a week to Utah okay now since John Wesley Powell's expedition down the Grand Canyon about 50 men had completed it okay many tried but didn't make it people who now managed it would have stories seeing broken boat boats and skeletons along the banks of the river cool okay so cool so good time for a river trip that's right and we should
Starting point is 00:20:38 say the white this is white people obviously Native Americans have cruise down that river well before any white dude I think that's fair my guess is my guess is a lot of those skeletons ain't white guys they always in the small that's the problem with being like so catered to you believe in yourself way too much they're just like hey we don't need maps we're going to the Grand Canyon that was like food we're dying so in the small town of Mexican hat Utah Neville's and his dad built three expedition boats so they built them by hand using hand tools like old-school bill in a boat the WEN which is named
Starting point is 00:21:28 after his father the botany and the Mexican hat those are the three boats Jesus Christ how long was their name pitch session four seconds I mean that is like we'll name one after dad the other after the town and the other thing what we're doing that's pretty good hey can we name one boat that's if we had a fourth if we had a fourth it'd be boat damn it I know it's just these are so good we've got when we've got my dad boat and then botany what we're studying it's pretty amazing this must have taken a while to come up with all these names really didn't it really didn't it just fast yeah no we didn't
Starting point is 00:22:12 even make a list there we go all right so the boats are 16 feet long there's not a lot of room to sit they're designed by Neville's as I said like he designed these completely for the river journey they're a brand new boat design he called them cataract boats hard to see what's the deal so they have like a hook for the I think the big thing is that they have a hook for the oars that a hook for the little metal a little metal I hook so that's like a yeah I think that's new man I mean what a god we are so spoiled I can't imagine just what and again I'm going to time where you see that you go whoa that changes everything the game is
Starting point is 00:23:00 new yeah yeah game we are fish finally so but it's it's like these boats are super advanced for the time but they're just a wooden I mean if you looked at it me be like really shouldn't should that be in the Echo Park Lake like it's it's right it's a wooden but it's not like what we think of now is going down the river it's not a big rubber inflatable thing it is just a right all wood boat right okay and it's interesting each boat has never we're gonna need to learn about that later wonder each boat has Neville's expedition on the side now Lois gets there and she sees the boat and she's not expecting that she thinks
Starting point is 00:23:44 this is just a pure science expedition but Neville's is looking at this as a business trip and these are paying passengers he is this journey to make a name for himself as the very first commercial Grand Canyon guide okay so we have very different wants yeah okay so he's like it's gonna be like an aquatic carnival and she's like I thought this was a science trip these are paying guests so who are the people who are coming on board is he having a lot of like peep randos coming on board no no it's just them it's just the people from before right yeah it's all the people they've picked but he's making
Starting point is 00:24:28 he's gonna make a little bit of money a show of it sure coming up on the left yeah so the publicity is great for him and having two ladies along on this trip for the first ladies to make it down the Colorado it's also great PR right newswires pick women also float on boats yes it is to believe women do not drown on boats they also float and it wasn't just a very isolated incident there were two of them look at them now we've seen everything I actually disagree counterpoint counterpoint I don't believe women float on boats well it looks like we'll never know this one we've got a real debate going on here
Starting point is 00:25:14 women might think they might float either way it was fun watching them on this boat I'm rhyming Charlie so the newswires pick up the story in the Michigan student paper and then each paper adds more to the story to sensationalize it the first article written called the plant specimens they're gonna get an important cacti and then a week or so later important cacti has been replaced with botanical freaks that's quite a punch up who's that person that's the AP no they're calling the plants they're calling the plants botanical freaks it's gone from being important cacti to baton so they're
Starting point is 00:26:01 like the ladies these scientists are going into a desolate desert area on a river to get important cacti in a week later it's like couple of bronze are going to get botanical freaks out there what are you have botanical so they're saying I mean that makes it sound like Martian foliage they're crazy plants dude they're not this is the plants are nuts and Venus fly traps that'll eat a woman and that's the AP by the way that had the botanical freaks that's good because you can trust them yeah pretty quickly the article started making no mention of science one reporter wrote quote the women besides their scientific
Starting point is 00:26:41 work will be doing the cooking oh my lord oh god it is because they had to explain it to some man I know some men women there someone's got a garden a little bit bad day but then they're making the chili I've done that old switcheroo yeah I mean it I just it must just be very I mean if you're them you've got to just be you know you're like I guess you're getting closer though I mean I guess at the time you're actually doing something that's never been done so it's maybe not as alarming but just hearing the cook like that's what they always do in the papers they always find ways to just make the story
Starting point is 00:27:25 so dumb and under but they undermine the people yeah you know how smart they are and what they're doing right okay so they lost they have spices the descriptions of the women here we go miss clover was a 40-year-old college professor plump and bespectled Lois was thin freckle-faced and nearly six feet tall she was actually seven she's five seven but they call it it's aggressive well this woman's like a giant freckle monster pudgy you imagine reading pudgy next to your name in a paper you'd be like where is he I will plump whatever I'd be like where is he I'll kill him I mean and then every single
Starting point is 00:28:10 newspaper paper article that I looked up she was freckle-faced Lois everyone freckle-faced Lois wow so they let and really they didn't respond to it she would she kept saying I'm only five seven whatever they'd say six feet hey freckle face is full of fibs too she doesn't even know how tall she is where freckle face has body dysmorphia she thinks she's the size of a regular person she's actually a big giant old freckle face it seems like you might have freckles on your brain female liar on a boat heads down river that guy's another boat following them female I boat coming so they leave Mexican hat on June 19th
Starting point is 00:28:53 and they drive to Green River where's where it's the dumbest city name I've ever heard yeah it's terrible so at Green River there's all these autograph seekers and photographers reporters waiting for them and they're surrounded and they're you know it's like a little celebrity situation and she was like I'm gonna go look at plants for the summer yeah it's just a lady who wants to do her job and look at plants so the plan was to go 120 miles down the Green River then down the very treacherous Colorado River through the Grand Canyon they would get more supplies at Lee's Ferry before they head into the Grand Canyon Grand
Starting point is 00:29:30 Canyon very scary very rough waters many people died there right there would be you know there's no communication unless someone hikes to the top of the Grand Canyon there's no other way to communicate okay and then eventually they'd end up in Lake Mead which is a new lake man-made total journey about 600 miles okay it's it's peak summer that means it's very hot that means yeah thunderstorms that happen and you know water goes crazy during thunderstorms in the desert the Green River Green River is full already from storms and the call Colorado is almost a flood stage and that means even crazier rapids now
Starting point is 00:30:10 dudes around Green River that the little town who called who said they're experienced mountain men or river runners would refuse to give their name to the press but have a lot of stuff to say about having women in the party being really a big problem okay so anonymous brave anonymous sources yes the press press emphasized that one woman had attempted to run the Colorado previously ten years before Bessie Hyde and her husband tried it on their honeymoon in 1928 okay what a nightmare of a honeymoon yeah they didn't stay married very long because their boat was found but they were never found that doesn't mean
Starting point is 00:30:57 they got divorced I think so they could still be there oh it's also called co widowed oh wood code yeah and that became proof that women couldn't run the Colorado there was a dude there too there was a guy there too what no that no a lady tried it I understand what you're saying with a man with a man a man and a woman both died doing it whoa you're getting very angry hear me out no lady try a woman tried it she didn't she didn't make it so women can't do the thing I'd guy didn't make it either so guys can't make it then I feel like we're not having a conversation you're not listening I feel like we're not having
Starting point is 00:31:39 a conversation that's really what it feels but it's felt like to me for a while so I don't know how to say this a woman tried to go down the river yes with a husband she died with a man with a man with a man she's on her honeymoon and then the man yes I remember didn't make it didn't I was it oh but the man did or the man died he didn't he didn't make it either but in your in your logic isn't it wouldn't he be in charge like in the way you see things wouldn't that wouldn't you assume the man what was he doing letting a woman be in charge that's on him right I guess I don't understand why you're so
Starting point is 00:32:15 focused on the man when clearly women can't be in boats or on water just okay okay just there that's my report what wait what do you mean legal that's my legal report okay this is going into the file okay so anonymous men told journalists that the ladies were quote one of the hazards as they are so much baggage and would probably need help in an emergency so that's that's what they think when they say bet Bessie couldn't women can't do it because bed they immediately think well I bet her husband would have made it if that lady that lady wasn't on the boat right she probably a day they picture like when
Starting point is 00:33:08 the person's drowning and you try to save him and that person drags you under that's that's what they're that's what they're thinking they're like oh yeah no she just took him down because she's a woman she didn't know she freaked out so much she probably tore his skin off honey honey calm down but you probably had a big dress on like all these petticoats she just starts come she just lights on fire the science aspect it becomes a problem there's actually people saying that it's not helpful quote so they're looking for flowers in Indian caves well I don't know about that but I I do know they'll find a peck of
Starting point is 00:33:57 trouble before they get through so you just I mean so everyone is just a hundred percent against the idea that women on a boat as botanist could do any good but I love the fact that ladies scientists are gonna be running around looking for flowers scientists do I'm actually not interested in what they come back with it'll probably just be a bunch of poems about flowers now that's not what botany is okay botany is much different don't ask me what it is exactly but it ain't just collected flowers it's flowers women love me it is amazing the it's like vitriol yeah they're they're they're angry they're angry that women are
Starting point is 00:34:49 coming up to their well imagine imagine you're a guy who rode the river and then and then a woman does it so you're like oh so it doesn't mean that much anymore that's what they're saying they're saying it's not a tough guy thing anymore if a woman could right that's all they're saying okay so it's but okay but then within there is the confession that they do believe women are capable of doing this I don't I don't know if they do I don't think they do I don't think I just was so then why not just be like they'll drown it'll be great PR for us seriously if you believe that just be like yeah go bring your friends get a
Starting point is 00:35:22 bunch of them go collect your flowers so headlines you know there were headlines that were like these women want to conquer the Colorado and that would be the headline and then the rest of the article would discuss how in all probability they would fail right right Lewis Lois wrote in her journal quote Huey in response to all of that wow so she really was prophetic with emotional vocabulary when she came hard she came hard you know who we back tomorrow Lois tomorrow they can just scram Lois I'm just you're Lois see you tomorrow see you tomorrow so an AP reporter asked Lois and Elzada quote do you think
Starting point is 00:36:17 women can do anything a man can do and they said no and Lois was annoyed she wasn't she said she wasn't as strong as most men but she was as smart and could handle the journey right yeah I mean I guess I mean I guess if you're in their position there's already such outcry over you doing nothing if you say something you're probably just gonna catch so much more shit so you kind of temper it you know I mean it's her her plan with the press was to say as little as possible slow play yeah because she knew the words would be twisted no matter what so just yeah buzz Holmstrom Holmstrom had run the Grand Canyon the
Starting point is 00:37:01 year before and when he ran at that time he said quote women have their place in the world but they do not belong in the canyon of the Colorado that and that's something we can still all agree on he was talking about Bessie the woman who had died but everyone now applied it to the current situation right and a reporter asked Lois about buzzes quote and she said just because the only other woman who ever attempted this trip was drowned is no reason women have any more to fear than I I honestly can't get over it I can't get over that a couple dies that a man and a woman die and that is just evidenced as women can't like no
Starting point is 00:37:50 it's the same well one try it and it didn't work so that's that we go no no more ladies dogs can do it we've seen a few of those but women oh for one it's over ladies go home this river ain't for you so Lois had to write friends to tell them not to believe what they were reading and that they might be late by a week on the trip so don't worry if they show up late they head out on June 20th 1938 pretty easy ride at first down the Green River on the third night Neville's gives them a lecture about how to run the rapids okay so they get to the Colorado River on June 23rd man and this is where the green where the green in
Starting point is 00:38:36 the Colorado River's meat is called cataract Canyon 63 rapids oh my god have you ever have you ever gone rafting like that no no I no I don't want to I went down the Colorado River once rafting and they set expectation on a level where you're like I mean this is pretty intense and then you're like oh my god they weren't kidding oh my god it's just non-stop yeah yeah I can't imagine back then oh my god wood boats yeah a wood boat it's like a pinewood derby rapids so they pull the boats out of the water they go scout the rapids the men plot the course while Elzada grabbed plant specimens Lois took a rest on the shore
Starting point is 00:39:28 okay and then Gibson all of a sudden screamed quote my god there goes the Mexican hat and the boat was going down the river no one is on it just all the supplies and stuff that they need oh man you got to be careful with that one that's why you should probably name it supply boat it's a little more like it's helpful it's informative instead of just naming it of the town you were in you lazy fuckers so was there anything on that one well just the water and the food and the nourishment and the supplies to cook the food with and bell the snacks and the cloths and the things to warm ourselves with it was
Starting point is 00:40:17 actually of the three the one that this should not have happened to I'll tell you I think that's freckle faces issue freckle face what you do to Mexican hat boat so Lois and Harris jump into the WEN and give chase and everyone else watches as they just disappeared down the river they sorry they the equivalent of like running after a Ferrari essentially and water is what they do yeah okay I was gonna run out of gas right okay okay so they jump in to save the boat and are they ever heard from again no well they so they got on there and they disappear around the corner and they give chase for hours they're trying
Starting point is 00:41:05 to find this boat the Sun goes down and then as it's almost dark they spot the boat and it had run ashore and a sandy patch of the river oh man all the food and supplies are still there oh it had gone five miles Mexican hat we you are a scam so Harris walks back to tell I can't figure out this part of the story because of the timing he must have gone back the next day or something but he walks back to tell the others and then and then everyone's like okay great you got the stuff and then Harris and Atkinson are like we're gonna walk back to Lois and they take only a flashlight
Starting point is 00:41:53 because now it's dark but then they can't find their way because it's dark and they just give up and they they they lay down on a rock just shivering in their wet clothes and wait for Don now Lois is alone for the night and at first she's like oh this is weird then she's like wait this she's looking at the stars she makes a fire she eats oh because she had all the food she eats and she and she's she wrote in her her log book quote I had a lovely time like she just has a nice freckle face we're surprised you're still here in the morning Lois wakes up she washes her face and puts on makeup man she's really like well having an
Starting point is 00:42:42 ass it's all they're programmed so Elzada and Lois for the first few days of the expedition would get up every morning and wash her face and put on makeup and then after a little bit they stop they stop because they're like they literally quote you this is useless yeah but but it's just so amazing how they're just like well I gotta put on my makeup forced forced to do it the others finally arrived freckle face what's wrong with you freck what the hell yeah who is did freckle face died is this an apparition from beyond who I was scared when I came around the corner man how did like I thought your face came off I thought your
Starting point is 00:43:29 face came off we're not sure that it hasn't just yet so the others finally come they arrived downriver and Neville's and Harris almost died but we found our food boat Neville's and Harris decided they were gonna take the boats through the rapids from now on and then walk back and get the others okay okay so there's a thing called lighting and that's where they they use ropes they're onshore and they use ropes to guide the boats down okay and then there's the other option which is dragging them over land or just probably not an ideal one but that's yeah the hardest one quote from the edivist magazine which is where
Starting point is 00:44:18 a lot of this came from quote Neville's fretted that the women were taking on too much of the physical labor okay sure I mean they need their energy to go pick flowers and cave and and I assume they're crocheting on the boat obviously they all started to feel nauseous from drinking water with clay in it man clay gut no thank you about a shot of whiskey seemed to help yeah for sure they say that's what breaks up belly clay Lois and Elzada collected specimens each morning on June 29th they came to a smooth part of the river and Neville's decided he was not going to scout first of whatever was ahead and they just went
Starting point is 00:45:09 in okay the boats went over a steep drop that they had no warning was there like a 40-foot drop or something but they're still they're not on them right they're just doing the thing they're oh they are on them now okay yeah okay so they're doing this they're whitewater rafting in a wood boat blind yeah and sure at Atkinson and Gibson are on the botany Gibson gets thrown into the river and then Neville's tries to head for them in the WEN you know like moving the ore so it can go sideways a bit that causes that causes the WEN to flip over sure things are going well it seems yeah then he jumps out and he tries to grab the
Starting point is 00:45:49 ropes of the two boats to tie them up oh no on the side of the river but then he goes into the river and gets swept down and then the two boats go down a river and the Mexican hat is the only one that doesn't have terrible issues that has Lois and Harris in it and they make the run safely okay they get the other okay the other the others the other people are still in the water so they find Gibson he's almost drowning at that point and they pull him in and save his life and then they grab Neville's and after a bit they come to El Zelda and Atkinson who are on the shore with the two other boats tied up okay so they
Starting point is 00:46:28 have all the boats though yeah Atkinson has a really deep leg wound El Zelda's thigh is really badly bruised Lois is like everyone rejoiced when we saw each other but not Neville's at this point he thought he'd brought a bunch of amateurs and was worried what the newspapers would print if an empty boat arrived at Lee's ferry this guy's this guy's focused in the right direction and he never tells the rest of them quote this is the end of my career as a river man oh my lord good god again different wants Jesus Christ man he's just like I'm making a business here yeah by the way he's not ready to be a
Starting point is 00:47:16 river man mm-hmm he's not doing it well not not at all I don't that doesn't seem like he is no he's lost all the boats at one point they would sometimes see names of previous expeditions that had written their names or the expedition on rocks I was like you'd paint it on there sure they would soon seen Hyde on November 1st 1928 Bessie and Glen Hyde clearly this is where I killed Hyde Bessie this is where I killed my wife and blame the river yeah then I ran off with all all my gold and goods jewelry and clothings I live in a cave picket flowers I've done it Atkinson used a white can of paint to add Neville's expedition with all their
Starting point is 00:48:09 names when they didn't show up at Lee's Ferry on the expected date the media went bug fuck oh no oh no it's gonna read they are they gonna I feel like I know it's gonna get blamed yeah exactly yeah river men were of course there and happy to explain how difficult it was with high water some talk shit about the group for being quote thoroughly unplanned an anonymous river men said they were quote drifting helplessly on the crest of the stream or already smashed to bits on the jagged rocks and of course they all pointed out no woman had ever finished the journey oh for three would go ahead and paint that on
Starting point is 00:49:05 the top of the mountain oh for three all right how many more women must die in this river epidemic we may as well call this this river the woman killer so it does is kill women all right Bryce relax you're getting real heated again now why not one woman can survive this this ancient base you need and I said this so many goddamn time talking you needs a giant a big old cock and balls cuz you don't have that all right Bryce listen we're not gonna know we're not gonna bring this back to the cock and balls again we're trying to be river feeds on lady parts all right Bryce stop we have a good argument here and you're making it
Starting point is 00:49:53 really weird lady part eater and a tear them up all right never never come back Bryce is not necessarily part of this crew it's merely me Tommy and and Devon are really like the main three Bryce's we don't hang out with Bryce that much because stop the women either rivers the name of the t-shirts all right you made your point and you talked about the cock and ball rock now go away I don't know why they try it anyway let me show you what a cock and balls looks like no no absolutely get get tie him up hog him down United Press again the AP AP United Press these the ones getting picked up on all the papers United Press
Starting point is 00:50:44 reported quote they were going along for the thrill as well as to study flora so really they are really playing up that these are just they're just there to pick flowers yeah I mean they're really just like oh they're also gonna get plants but the main thing is these women just want to ride a river right they're frivolous like it's just such I mean these women are like we taught she fucking wandered for us as a child cuz she was so fucking into plants like they really are just those kind of scientists who are just super locked into a thing the truth is you're probably not gonna end up on the boat unless you're super
Starting point is 00:51:19 competent out of percent you're not you're not gonna you you you're not gonna want to do this unless you're a daredevil type yeah and that's not what they are they are a daredevil in the sense that they they just want to collect as many plant specimens as they right and really when you listen to this story it is all the guy I mean they've given them no power so they're really they're in the guys mission yeah well good luck thanks to the ladies the Mexican hats gone so Buzz Holmstrom Holmstrom who I talked about before he's the guy who ridden who rode the river a year before right and then said the quote about
Starting point is 00:51:58 women should be on the river I might guess is he's not gonna have a comment well he he put his boat on a trailer and headed for Utah to Green River to prepare for a rescue mission so he's like they're gone I'm gonna I'm gonna go get ready right buzz has got to save him Lois's grandmother was quote weeping in terror over what had happened her father is now thinking about personal responsibility giving her the money approving it writing the letter well yeah but also the botany the head of the botany department he's got blood on his hands too Dave well it's future wife obviously a plane starts searching for
Starting point is 00:52:39 them on July 7th and it finds them that evening as they're just eating dinner on a sandbar we found them there and they have lobster how did you wow this is a great setup kind of I oh my god cheddar biscuits they got candlelight and a little cheddar biscuits lobster I'll tell you a basket if they were to want to turn this into an establishment they certainly could they are raising up their wine glasses at us lobster red they could call it no oh what one just wrote cheers in the sand it's obvious the women have taken over the brains of the men things here are scary to say the least so the plane
Starting point is 00:53:29 dropped leaflets where is your makeup ladies this is crazy quote we are the US Coast Guard plane searching for a party of six University of Michigan geologists reportedly late at Lee's Ferry I love they could even get there correct yeah profession yeah they're like rocks or some shit they are rock humans if you are they lie down all in a row and then stand up if in need of food sit up if members of the party are all okay extend arms horizontally it is imperative that we know who you are so identify yourself by first signal first so they did up if you need help and lay down if everything's fine do some sit ups
Starting point is 00:54:18 if everything is fine and you still need a little bit of help jumping jacks indicate to us that things are really bad so do you guys know body signs do you guys know burpees do you know burpees do a bunch of burpees and we'll order pizza so they do the calisthenics that they're told to do and the plane like Bob's it's you know just does the all right last one if everybody puts their right foot in and then sort of jumps a little bit two times and then does a full 180 rotation jazz hands jazz hands back back back but to butt then we do the conga line and finally a couple leg kicks and the big finale jazz hands on
Starting point is 00:55:05 knees okay yeah they yeah then you're all good why we're doing the jazz hands wrong so I think it's and I think they don't think they want help yeah it doesn't seem like okay so plane leaves they make it to leaves very four days late okay when they got there reporters are sleeping on the sand on the little beach that's there and so they pull up and then all of the reporters start waking up and grabbing their cameras and video recorders but but it's too late we went the wrong way this is reporter island this is where all the journalists are cast off to get out of here this is a terrible place this
Starting point is 00:55:52 just in more people are walking up breaking news a bunch of people here on journalist island so the reporters are like can you go back and come back down so we're all about reality is there any way to have another take we were napping and that's what happens the they go back up they go let's do one more that was great way better way closer way more authentic I think this time if we could really be celebrating in the revelry and are we opposed to pirate outfits I guess it's the question it would be nice to sort of get the sense that there been some cannibalism going on again I don't think we're outright explicitly
Starting point is 00:56:33 saying that but I think we could just give the insinuation that maybe one of you is eating another one you know you're sort of piratey at minimum maybe rabies I don't know I'm just having fun this one let's do this one loose real loosey-goosey we got the second one which is nice cuts together with the first one that we missed and at this one real loosey-goosey just have fun okay no I we're done with it we're not doing we're doing one more take and take some of these jugs with triple X on them if you want to just kind of swing them back forth and hey oh ho ho ho ho ho something like that really do we're not
Starting point is 00:57:12 gonna do any of this just take off everybody take off their shirt the women don't have to but wrap them around your head like your buccaneers and then come in and then it's a ho ho ho he ho ho we're not pirates when we go something like that okay we're not doing any of that we're not just really I mean we already have the one for safety so I think this would just be kind of a fun punch-up you know a little I've been on a boat for a wooden boat for two weeks one of you can get right up there on the mast hang on there I mean I look I'm not trying to poke fun but maybe one of you up lifts your knee up a little bit tucks
Starting point is 00:57:47 it behind your other leg makes it look like a one-legged pirate I think that really sells up and we don't have to tell the other reporters but I think just let's let's have fun something like that that's great is anyone writing this down take that that song is very dynamic from the top so just get the boats around the Mexican hat the one named after your dad and the one that is the occupation that you have and just go back around and let's just let's get it again I'm really excited what what's my occupation well if pirate your parents know the botany boat but your pirates okay all right guys they're
Starting point is 00:58:34 coming I think I come on do it come on I think I see I'm coming get whoa oh boy it looks like the seas changed them I know it's a river just loosened it up for this take well that was dark shit nobody's saying the song nobody put a shirt on their head well I mean what the hell we had a big session before this about the yo ho ho he and you're coming here now nothing yeah no no nothing I mean nothing I just want to I've been in a boat for two weeks I just want to eat and sleep in a bed so that's right you want to have your boring entrance more power to you thank you it's just that I really go ahead
Starting point is 00:59:23 Lois had there were letters waiting for her there was a piece of her brother's wedding cake I was don't worry we brought you cake from your brother's wedding first question answered now you tell us about some stuff go ahead eat your brother's wedding cake it's two months old he had gotten married on July 1st and he had picked that date because he wanted to distract his parents from thinking about Lois wow okay they stayed a week in a lodge there and topped off their supplies a Lewis wrote to everyone telling them to ignore the stories in the papers like the one that was headlined girl left alone about
Starting point is 01:00:07 the night she spent alone enjoying herself that she had a great night story is all about wild animals howling all around her instead of they know they know it's a woman yeah they know the predators new woman easy quote at no time was I cold unfed nor did I hear animals growling from the rim really most of the stuff written about has been absurd and so wrong that the only right thing was the date line well we have our media Dave but then she did write to her roommate who seems to be the only one she really confided the truth in with and she said quote may not continue the trip but keep that quiet
Starting point is 01:00:53 for the present as a roommate is just like I'm sorry I was so sure she was dead I just sold all of it I yeah so you just really put the idea in my head that you were gonna die I guess I just really started thinking it was that when you were a week late so oh well I said I mean it was only I remember I said I might be a little late and not to read I'll be honest the second you left you died to me and that's when I sold most of your stuff and moved in the twins before I got to the river oh yeah like as soon as you left I mean you just who boxes up their stuff weird so I sold all your stuff because it was boxed
Starting point is 01:01:43 up and labeled it was real easy and then the twins moved in who are the two the twins are the new roommates I have Cassie and Kasia okay well I'm I'm I'm sorry again we'll deal with their identical it's awesome going down the most dangerous river in the world I'll keep but while you're down there you may as well scout a new home because it ain't here I got the twins now and all your stuff's gone can you stop talking about the twins they're amazing do you understand the tricks they play on me they went through a whole week where the one pretended to be the other I mean come on it's a story generator there's
Starting point is 01:02:22 just a lot of fun here I'm moving out as you should do there's no room for you here the twins have pretty much taken over your room I don't know if they've got bunk beds in there they finish each other's sentences one of them was at work and felt sick and the other one got diarrhea here isn't that wild did you expect them both to get diarrhea or I expected the one who was sick to get diarrhea not the one who felt fine to get it here it's crazy you're not giving it enough credit one of them is at work and felt really sick and didn't have diarrhea at the same exact time here cashier was just shitting her mind out
Starting point is 01:03:12 that's crazy I feel like you're a bad roommate for everybody like you saw my stuff you you reveal their troubles they're not really the trouble it's not private met twin things that happen to twins are magical it should be revealed to everybody diarrhea stuff is not something you tell people about now they're not normally when you have it of course not because it's just boring old diarrhea this was transferred from work in the case she has belly you're an idiot she probably just ate something bad she didn't eat something bad her sister ate something bad at work and then she pooped it out here they aren't
Starting point is 01:03:50 who dolls they're twins again you wouldn't get it that's why you wouldn't fit into this they get it they're awesome we went through a whole week once with one pretty I already told you that but anyway the one got diarrhea okay I'm done I'm gonna go back on the river thanks good you know did leave the expedition were two dudes Harris and Atkinson well I told you meant can handle the river Atkinson was upset that he never had any time to collect animal specimens he'd planned to use the animal specimens to sell and cover his trip cost okay so a guy went on the trip to just find animal pieces to sell and he was like well
Starting point is 01:04:35 this is not what I said this is not working out we have barely stopped for animal pieces I think he was mad that the women had time to collect plant specimens and he didn't okay but they were also getting up like crazy early before everybody else going to collect plant specimens like they well I mean honestly when you hear about the attitudes who wouldn't want this guy around I mean men men over women as far as this had like a guy's like well that's it we didn't get animal specimens I'm going home I said what chipmunk that's all I wanted all right what god damn river chipmunk all right Andy look
Starting point is 01:05:14 you had time you could have done that you slept in real late you were getting drunk there was no way to do it it was literally impossible it's impossible what am I there's a chipmunk over there I can't my neck hurts I can't turn well see that's the problem you're not going anywhere you're not do you're not actively doing anything they were up the women were up collecting early if you always had an excuse why don't you turn your whole body then but fuck but fuck this whole trip because this yeah just the whoever planned the like hours and stuff and the roles and not good nobody's getting anything nobody you guys
Starting point is 01:05:55 are getting plants I'm not getting animals like I got a ton of plants they have a ton of just out of here because no one have a ton of plans the whole thing is a fucking you just but you just had excuse after excuse the only thing you found out here was excuses not one plant not one chipmunk tons of plants there's a chip behind you there's a bunch there's a family of chipmunks behind you nothing we're just it's a waste it's a total it's a disaster been fruitful goodbye my friends farewell what a waste of time it's a chipmunk on you waste of time all right so Elzada and Neville's borrow a
Starting point is 01:06:32 truck and they drive to mexican hat because they need to find two new volunteers to take those guys place oh wow and back in Lees Ferry buzz homestrom comes rolling in with his boat on the trailer and he was there because he wanted to find out a little bit about these women who were riding the river I told you the women cursed the men and they're coming for the rest of the men next and then they'll take themselves now buzz love he'd love riding rivers like he floated from job to job he's usually broke too shy to be a tour guide he he now spent time just scraping the pain off of boats for a living he didn't want
Starting point is 01:07:18 attention but when he ran the river last year he didn't want people knowing because he thought I can't remember why but I should have put in here but it was some sort of reason like he would he would get taxed or it was some kind of I pee my pants every time but the Saturday evening post ended up writing up a story about him which was you know the biggest the biggest yeah national media thing it's still enormous yeah no I love it and he paid him they paid him for the story so at this point he's now discussing making a second run down the call around a river with another guy and then their plan was to film it and then
Starting point is 01:07:59 they could distributors sell the film for people who had never gone on the river so it's almost like virtual reality early virtual reality sort of wow okay yeah right and and then he doesn't like so he doesn't like honey it's like we're going down the river yes I mean that's kind of what it is like if there's a movie theater you go and sit down and watch what it's like to go on the Colorado River you'd be everyone enjoys tonight's river turn the lights Larry go with it so he doesn't like the look of this women's journey to buzz it looks like rich people were about to start running the river with guides which would
Starting point is 01:08:38 harm his plan to sell videos of the journey right I like how in his head everyone will then run the river yeah no I know once this happens it's the flood gates open everyone will be down here nobody will want to watch my river POV yeah it's just such a it's such a crazy thing was like once one rich guy does it to all the rich people do it and then no one's buying my videos yeah films there's no videos yeah and quote he said now these women are in the canyon if they make it I guess it will be time for me to go and hide somewhere like it's all over for me once the women get wet other women will start popping off of them
Starting point is 01:09:19 like Remlins god damn it you see that movie where the it's around Christmas time and a guy gets a woman wet and then all the other women I've heard enough I'm in one asked you they got to kill one in a blender it's just that's really something fun to say don't don't get him wet yeah so he talks to he talks to Lois and he admits his rescue plan his plan to rescue them was probably gonna lead to good publicity he's like very honest he just says yeah it was I was hoping I would be the rescue guy right so Lois Gibson and Buzz end up spending the whole day talking he tells them of the nightmare that's coming up in the
Starting point is 01:10:02 river and he said he'd been scared shitless when he did it alone but it was totally worth it and Lois loves his honesty and he didn't hold his opinions about women or the river against him she was just like yeah okay he's just one of those guys right and she wrote in her journal one of those guys we call guys she wrote in her journal quote I've never felt so much like a hero worshiper oh interesting okay so she asked him she goes remember she had written to her roommate said I don't know if I'm gonna keep going and then she asked him she goes should I keep going or should I walk away from this and he
Starting point is 01:10:42 says you should keep going listen to Buzz and then he gives her the truth is I've never met a woman didn't know what you'd be like until I met you I thought I honestly thought you were more shaped like an antelope I was told that she had hooves so this is all new to me he gives her a good luck charm which is his waterproof match case that has a compass attached and she wrote to her father it was a pity buzz was shorter than her because otherwise that she dated I mean it's nice to see them embracing weird standards to remember she's five seven so he must have been like a five four something yeah but people were a little
Starting point is 01:11:30 shorter that's so funny though the only way that like well unfortunately you've got to be this tall to ride this ride buzz wrote his mom quote they are all fine and I hope they go through okay I'd marry her but she's taller than me she's big and I thought it would probably be better for me if they didn't the women on the the women on that party are really doing better than the men this lowest J is almost six feet tall raw bone freckled in tan very strong works like a horse helping portage and trying to get specimens and a good sport never complaining okay so that's a pretty good compliment yes and of course written
Starting point is 01:12:16 physics about physical the physical nature first well he's also he's also saying she's cute yeah strong and yes and she's better than the men Elzada Neville's borrowed a truck starts falling apart before they get to Mexican hat so they stop in a place called Tuba City and there's a trading post there city yeah Tuba City look they didn't know how to name things when the Utah start yeah we're not mad on account of the Tuba we got one this rock looks like a tube we're from Mexican hat there's a rock that looks like a Mexican hat oh y'all gonna run through canary that's where they got that big rock that
Starting point is 01:12:56 looks like a bird like the canary oh man I'm from Salt Lake City we got a big rock that looks like a salt lake I'm from cocking ballsville I don't know if you guys have seen the rock we have but holy shit the shaft the balls come on why does everyone hate where I'm from so they go to the owner of the trading post and they ask him you know they need a ride well you got a tuba this tan works on tube a currency the owner said look better yet I have a cousin sir stop we're good we wanted to help but better yet I got a cousin the he takes into it takes them to his cousin Lauren Bell and Lauren was raised on Navajo
Starting point is 01:13:44 Nation and Elzel Elzada asked him if he'd like to run the river and Lauren says quote hell yes what river okay so he's in yeah the Neville's got a friend of his from Mexican hat Del Reed to be the other guy he's 42 year old gold prospector all right I don't know if I'm ready for the journey but I'm sure is willing to try they said so that's it they set back down there around July 13th Neville's feelings have now swung the other way for when he yelled at them all he wrote quote this is a swell gang and we're going to town okay so they enter the Grand Canyon this is the scary part of the of the trip three days
Starting point is 01:14:31 later they but they're doing fine they get into the rapids three days later they stop at the most important scientific location of the journey Vassey's paradise which was named after one of the guys on Powell's journey okay freshwater spring sprayings are falling off Redwell Redwell limestone it's just it's just green heaven right yeah it's a crazy oasis type place they're just collecting plant plant specimens like absolute crazy god look at all these chipmunk skeletons it's a shame shame it is a shame so many we're flush the men however swimming going under the
Starting point is 01:15:12 waterfalls and then after they sat around and waited for the women to make them lunch they must ask because Elzada told them to just eat canned food and the leftover biscuits from breakfast good so the women you know they get plant specimens but then they they made presses out of newspaper and cardboard and then they tie them and leather straps to keep them together so okay it's a process they're going through like they're putting plants in presses and doing this whole thing right and then they finally finished pressing all their samples and they go and they find the men quote waiting bug-eyed and expected
Starting point is 01:15:53 under a rock so the dudes had not eaten they were just sitting there starving thankfully we found a bunch of flowers and some cardboard but other than that were famished how am I supposed to eat a can you said get the canned food Jeff is a can caught in his throat he's dying so she writes in her journal she's I she's being pretty nice but she's like we've been really way too nice to these guys you write okay yeah they pass through very difficult rapids and similar passing under bright angels suspension bridge on which a bunch of reporters are gathered to watch okay and one yells down quote look as if you're glad to be
Starting point is 01:16:38 landing so this is this is oh so again they're like this is the 1930s version of hey smile to a lady on the street right right right yeah yeah they're trying to they have a narrative they've already got the narrative they're trying to keep it going right yeah there and a lot of it I mean a lot of that obviously is due to the fact that they have such little interaction with the expedition and so they're inventing this plot and that they have to kind of keep evolving with no real facts and then when they get the facts they're like well we got to manipulate them to fit the story that we've already come up with which again
Starting point is 01:17:14 is dead doesn't happen anymore so that they they stop there and there and there's a it's place called phantom ranch on account we got a rock that looks like a phantom's ranch oh no this is actually there's actually a phantom here and he started a ranch so there's oh shit yeah well he's scary all right so instead this is a haunted phantom zone yeah so have you seen that scooby-doo absolutely we've all seen scooby-doo the live stage show he came scooby came here and there's a whole thing the show was got worse when they added scrappy but I've seen all the plays musicals the phantom turned out to
Starting point is 01:17:59 be the son of the old guy who used to own the ranch yep is this right he just wanted he just want to scare his brother and wow would have gotten away with it it's the 42 year old prospector from the other boat well I would have gotten away with it too so this place tons of tourists would come down so they would hike down this is one of the only locations you could hike down they would hike down bright angel trail from the rim and they'd stay at the ranch and then they'd hike back up okay so there's there's tons of photographers cowboys tourists all these people waiting for them they eat dinner with this big crowd and then they
Starting point is 01:18:34 just want to get away from everybody because they're used to just solace right they used to be quiet yeah so they go and they camp on the side of river where it's quiet and they're alone and then the next day they just they're gonna hike up to the rim and spend two days there and Elzada's got all of the specimens right pressed and she's like they're too heavy to carry up it's just too hard to do so I told you the woman wouldn't be able to handle all the flowers so she makes arrangements with a guy there at the ranch to have them brought up like by mule and then mailed off to okay right so up top again tons
Starting point is 01:19:17 of photographers they're being interviewed they're being asked to give lectures about what they've seen can you lose one of your arms sorry it's just we had no idea the story got wild second I didn't think you'd live right so whatever it's a big deal they're there for two days and all that all the reporters want to talk about was that they're women that's it and low and just super annoyed because she is like we've you know found all this stuff we're scientists they hiked back down what's it like to do all this without a pecker I'm gonna handle that Neville's is like okay I'm gonna tell you about a rice
Starting point is 01:20:01 grain machine accident I had as a child took it right off so they start back on the river they're dealing with rapids every day massive rapids and when they got to them Neville's ordered the women to get out and walk still Lois wanted to run a rapid but Neville's wouldn't allow her to right well obviously in his journal he wrote that she was quote too reckless she's too so she can't even be on the boat doing nothing she's that right she has to watch yeah walk I mean yeah it's and watch so the crew passed the spot where the hides boat had been found 13 miles later they came to separation rapid where three men left
Starting point is 01:20:49 Powell's crew so they're making it past places that are like marks of where people didn't make it right okay right getting through the really hard part right they're almost at the end of the journey now they're coming up on Lake Mead and then they get to Lake Mead and they feel despondent like they're just like well this is sad it's ending they can't bell caught a rattlesnake and put it in a can he carried it around an empty bacon sure of course and that is by the way that is where we got the peanuts prank from all these years later was it just had a snake in a can and bacon can so I was like hey man you want some bacon
Starting point is 01:21:27 Jesus Christ that snake bit me God got you that's a goof you know fatal that could probably but that could probably have while you're dying I'm having a kind of epiphany here now we could put maybe a fake snake because the one bit you and you're dying so maybe a fake snake and instead of a bacon can maybe peanuts yeah like this I don't need your help you're dying I'm dying but I love this I love that it's validating it's helpful but you're not gonna can I can have going on this I got some VC money well I mean you do definitely the venom is coursing through you I'm not sure if that's the time for you to be
Starting point is 01:22:06 throwing cash and some idea but I mean I take it the whole thing this is gonna depend on is how much people want peanuts yeah yeah all right well I'm enough to make the prototype take care so they are like I said they're not like me so they're I guess like me it's pretty long as far I it's harder to it's harder to row here right they're actually having a row right water instead of like go with the current heat is brutal okay their hands are blistered the next time they can't they hear a motorboat and they look up and it's buzz okay he has come to congratulate them he he they type their boats and he told he tows them
Starting point is 01:22:56 to Emory Falls then a tour boat comes and everyone's very excited to see them there's park officials his cameraman they get on that boat they take it to Boulder City Nevada on the boat they have box lunches ice-cold sodas as tons of people are asking for photos autographs interviews the AP quote women make perilous trip through the gallo Colorado gorges the article can you believe it the article called Lois and Elzada quote two Michigan school marms with copper tanned cheeks oh my god Jesus Christ school marms I know Lois and Elzada were the first non-native women to make the run down the Colorado
Starting point is 01:23:49 they did it in 43 days so in her hotel room Elzada just misses the feeling of being on the river and she's literally just sitting there crying when Buzz calls the room oh and she goes down to see him and he's like I totally understand like I get what you're going through and she wrote in her journal quote he's as lonely as I am for the uh-oh uh-oh well hold on no so Elzada and Neville's down now had back to Mexican hat and they stop at the South Rim and that's when Elzada learns none of the specimens left at Bright's Angel Trail had been brought up oh shit everything collected from Lee's fairy to Bright Angel was gone so they go
Starting point is 01:24:39 back to Michigan and they're like we have to use our notes to write about what we discovered scientists so they don't have any proof so yeah so different it's it's not a good look to write up a science paper like and then we saw this one here's another flower you've never heard of promise so they're now thinking oh we are going to be known no they're thinking we are just to be known as two women who went down the river and that's it that's our that's all that there is so buzz goes on the second journey that he'd been planning and he goes on with two other guys in September and he he's writing back and forth the lowest all
Starting point is 01:25:24 the time and he writes a teller he thought of her while he was on the river and he wrote he right now he's writing letters and at every stop and sending them to her oh boy so he's caught feelings yeah quote I really think you fit into River life just as well as any man I know and a lot better than some she wrote back and he would now he would he'd go to a stop and there'd be a letter waiting for him hmm at one point to he wrote he he wrote she wrote and described an outfit she'd worn to a publicity event and he responded quote I don't think I would like you as well that way as all tan and weather beaten and
Starting point is 01:26:03 run down at the heels a little in an old pair of slacks okay they're flirting this is letter flirting okay yeah they're DMing it's right they are DMM yes right and on October 22nd Buzz arrived at a Bright Angel Creek and one of the guys on the trip Willis Johnson starts wandering around exploring and as he walks he comes across this weird pile of no newspaper no no and they're they're carefully placed on a rock and this paper sucks it ain't nothing but a bunch of dumb flowers and he looks at me like there's cactus tongues between each newspaper wow he's like oh my god these are the last specimens so Buzz hauls the
Starting point is 01:26:52 specimens 11 miles up the trail and my lord to Michigan and Lois and Alzada are able to publish their paper in 1941 on the Grand Canes cactus and another on a comprehensive plant list these included four new species of plants well Buzz is in love with Lois and they write to each other for a few years but nothing ever comes of it he was apparently too shy to tell her that he loved her yeah and no it's that just right 30 letters a week it's all he's also short remember don't stop right right of course most of the expedition members would head west and run rivers for the rest of their lives Neville's successful journey allowed him
Starting point is 01:27:35 to open a successful river rafting business Buzz took a socialite named Edith Clegg across the U.S. by river he went into the Navy in World War two and then he went back and was running rivers he ended up committing suicide while on a river in Oregon in 1946 oh wow Elzada traveled and lectured she traveled all over like South America and she ended up retiring to the Rio Grande Valley of Texas where she died in 1980 Lois married a botanist had a couple of kids then her husband died and she lived in North Carolina for a while but every single river run that the old crew did she would follow and cut out the articles
Starting point is 01:28:17 in the papers oh no sorry she's the one to travel all of South America Lois did all right and when she was 80 she ran the Grand Canyon again wow three scientists asked her to join them as they tried to figure out the rate of environmental change in the canyon so it turns out that her and Elzada's work had only become more important over the years because it was the only plant list of the Grand Canyon before the closure of the Grand Canyon Dam which then flooded everything and lost all of that plant history they called the trip the old-timers trip and they launched from Lee's Ferry on September 8th 1994 and
Starting point is 01:29:06 after 12 days they stopped at Diamond Creek there were two other women on the trip Neville's daughters Joan Stavalee and Sandy Reif and then Lois died in 2013 at 99 wow crazy most of this is the source is the Wild Ones by Melissa Savini in Attivist magazine online that's a really good what is it what Attivist if you want to get if you want to read good writing I recommend subscribing to them good writing I say good writing I don't know that's crazy yeah you know I mean obviously there's you know there still is like as with anything which is you know there's a double standard but it has to just be so
Starting point is 01:30:00 bizarre I don't know it's just so it's so weird the level of I mean they just have no confidence in in women in any way it's just it really was remarkable yeah and is remarkable but but I've been I've been asked by a lot of women to do science women ones but they're all this it's the same thing it's the same story over and over and over again it's just this the media and everything else is just saying the same thing and then they do something good and you're like okay but so it just gets I decided to do one it's not our usual sort of theme where it gets crazy and wacky then it it's just it's just consistently guys being
Starting point is 01:30:50 dicks well I mean you know I think what is wacky about it is that not wacky you know we've got to be wacky but what's what's weird about the story is that yeah I mean it is that it's that it's the inability to imagine that anyone who's not a white man can handle things and yeah it just yeah I don't know it's just it's just remarkable and it really is and it's remarkable how long the grift has been going I mean it's really remarkable and it's still like pretty effective you know like yeah I don't know though but that that is that is a great story I mean and again I mean it's just you you know they're just they're
Starting point is 01:31:42 just being competent they're being scientists and and and to begin with you are so did they like put you down so much for doing nothing and then they over elevate you for just competency like they just can't fathom the ability to do anything any I mean aside from cooking like the fact that you have to have a cover like your undercover you know your undercover scientists well Dave we've done it we did it again yay all right USA best country ever
