This week on the Glass Cannon Podcast, the heroes stumble into an ambush.
Out from these two secret doors in a... what's like a story way I could say this?
A surprise round.
And must invoke their new powers.
Pembroke is hovering and he is going to cast one of his new spells.
To take control.
Oh boy, here we go, 19 on the die.
But they're overconfident. to take control. Oh boy, here we go. 19 on the die. But their overconfidence
I mean, I had a plan,
but do I even need to participate in this combat?
could be their downfall.
First of all, a couple things are going to happen.
The adventure continues.
It is a fey or plant-targeted effect?
It is not.

super fun and you know what else is going to be fun is this episode of the glass cannon podcast it's episode 178 please enjoy and we'll see you soon
i am about to make a rule change that is going to shake the very foundation
of this company we have worked so hard to build. I'm going to go on record by saying
you're not going to like it.
I might go as far to say you're going to hate it.
But I think the time has come.
And there's no time like now
as you enter this mountain
opening up another part of this adventure to make this change.
I don't even know how I want to say it.
I don't know if I want to start the episode off on something that's just going to make you angry.
You clearly already decided to.
You did already.
I guess my hands are tied then.
I have to.
You've come this far.
Who tied them?
Don't look back.
The perfect time to do it is at the climactic battle. Right? Right. Wait, wait, wait. I want to wait right've come this far. Who tied them? Don't look back. The perfect time to do it is at the climactic battle.
Right?
Right.
Wait, wait, wait.
I'm going to wait right to the last second.
Let's stall it a little bit more.
Okay.
You know in your mind that we're all going to hate it.
Yeah.
Or do you think some might hate it more than others?
Do you think some sick, twisted one of us might like it?
Um, I don't know.
You think we're all going to hate it?
I think you're all going to hate it. What about the listeners hate i think you're all gonna hate it what about the
listeners you think they're gonna like it i think some will you think some will hate it i think the
gms out there might like it okay it's something i've been so a minority of our listeners a very
small minority of our listeners i think this is something i've been thinking about for a long time
this is how shows do well it's like figure out what your audience you want a real small small portion of your audience likes and do only that do that right figure out what your audience likes. What a real small,
small portion of your
audience likes
and do only that.
Do that, right.
Figure out what your
audience is.
Ignore the majority
of people who would
listen or would listen
if we were to get
new listeners.
Exactly.
And focus on a niche.
That's business 101.
This is what happens
while infuriating the
people who actually
do the show.
Right, right.
It's really, it's a...
Now you can see why
we've all been so
successful in business
up until this point. It's a three-fold plan um but it's something i've been thinking about for
a long time because as you progress to higher levels i think it's an element of the game that
has the potential to uh ruin things maybe at least ruin my fun uh okay i have an idea what
this might be actually now you say that i'm
beginning to feel like we're gonna end up feeling like reginald vel johnson carl winslow and family
matters right before urkel got the big push to be the forefront of the show you're gonna feel like
reginald the dead horse in minderhall's valley i did i did a show with reginald vel johnson oh yeah
yeah nice guy yeah a little show called die hard the musical not not not entirely unrelated it was a christmas carol
yeah he was the ghost of christmas present oh good for him he was very nice bottle caps
oh are no longer worth a re-roll they are no longer a bit of luck. Roll twice, take the higher result.
They are no longer disadvantage, if you use another poorer systems term, for the GM.
They are a conditional bonus to one roll equal to half your current level.
Okay.
Please discuss.
Fine. Let's go. your current level okay please discuss fine i mean you're taking i think i think it's i think it's really lame because of how few you give out but if you give them out more the goal is to give
out some more right i mean oh well then yeah if you're balancing it in some way where it's exciting
to use them the bat well i mean you have i mean the reason i understand how you're saying they're
like really powerful i just think that it's, like...
I don't think they're that powerful.
I don't think they are.
I don't think they're that powerful unless you consider them to be, like, you use them after you roll or something, which some abilities do.
That would be incredibly powerful.
When you have to say it beforehand, you know, your chance of failure drops dramatically.
I get that.
Yeah, dramatically.
I think so, yeah.
Dramatically.
But you give them out so rarely that it's, like, it makes sense.
Well, my goal is to give them out more often.
But you have to earn them, Matthew.
But it's like, if Galabros was still around,
it's something that he could be passing out on every round just on his own.
It's also like a standard mechanic in the other game that we don't mention.
Right.
That happens like all the time.
You know why?
Because it's an easy mechanic.
Right.
Maybe you've made your life easier,
but you've just added a whole bunch of math.
I just added, what, a plus five to everybody's roll once a day?
Once you want to use that bottle cap?
My genuine non-joking around,
can we call it a bottle cap bonus
so there's no question of stacking
with something that we already have?
Right, because conditional bonuses don't necessarily stack.
Right.
Oh, because you can't use two bottle caps
to get your full level. The BCB. You can't use two bottle caps to get your full level the bcb you can't use two cap bottle caps to get your full
level right right you can still only use one cap it's a bottle cap bonus they cannot stat
my only genuine criticism of it and it may not play out this way but as i'm playing out of my head
is that those little spikes in the action those little turns and things i don't think they turn
the whole battle but they're very exciting moments And some of my favorite moments on the show.
They are my least favorite moments.
That's not true.
That's not true at all.
That's not true at all.
Nine times out of ten, who's the one going,
you got a bottle cap?
Maybe you should throw in a bottle cap.
It's you, Troy.
Yeah, well, that cap is going to be,
that's really going to suck when you have to make those saves
and you can't roll twice now.
Yeah, I mean, I just think that it,
I don't think that we are a show
that just like babies characters
to the point where
they are invincible, right?
You've murdered some characters.
I think you've been coddled
for two books.
I think you've all been coddled.
What are you talking about?
Characters die.
They die all the time.
All the dead ones weren't coddled.
You've murdered three.
The rest of you have been
very coddled.
You've murdered
three player characters
and several animal companions.
I was particularly hard on them.
I will agree.
But the rest of you
really had a target.
I've treated with kid gloves.
It's retroactive
indiscriminate coddling.
Yes.
That you're recognizing
after the fact.
Indiscriminate
retroactive coddling.
All right.
Okay.
I got you.
I just,
I think it makes them
less exciting. That's all. Right, right. I think it's more balanced. I mean, it's. I think it makes them less exciting.
That's all.
Right, right.
I think it's more balanced.
I mean, it's more balanced to not have them at all.
It's balanced.
Do you want to play the Order of the Amber Dye game?
We could play that game.
I would enjoy that game.
But that's not our game.
You wouldn't enjoy that game.
That's not our game.
Yeah.
No, I think at high-level play, it really can change things too much, because you're
almost auto-successing when you use it.
I think.
Not necessarily. I don't think that's true at all. But I think it's almost an auto-successing when you use it. I think. Not necessarily, but I think it's
almost an auto-success. That's not true at all for anybody except
Grant's gun. That thing
is ridiculous. It's especially not true on
saves and stuff like that because saves
is one of the things they changed in second edition
because of how low they are at high
levels. I mean, I am a 11th
level character with like a plus
5, well, reflexes for me,
but like a plus 9 well reflex is a cap for me but like a plus nine will
say right for a spell casting a super powerful character plus nine well can we at least agree
on one thing that it's all grant's fault yes yeah it is the gunslinger i think at the end of the day
it's your choice to bring this gunslinger into the campaign when he dies maybe i'll change my
thoughts i have a compromise proposal for you. I'm listening.
You don't like it?
Just throw it right out there.
Just throw it right back at me.
Everything you said, let's keep it, but only apply it to Grant.
I'm fine with that.
I'll take that sacrifice for the rest of the good.
Grant bottle caps behave differently.
Well, let's take a look and see how many caps everyone has right now.
Let's go to the board.
We'll go to the board.
Troy actually has to get up because the board.
Here's the other question.
Is this just a giant slayer rule?
Because everything we play is not at high level, you know?
Right now, it is a giant slayer only rule.
I don't give out bottle caps in Dead Sons.
You do.
I have one for remembering the moons of sleep.
You only get a plus two to your attack now.
According to this board, I see Skid with two,
Joe with one.
That doesn't seem right at all. That's incorrect.
That doesn't seem right.
I do not have one.
All right, so we can do one of two things.
Everyone gets a bottle cap to start.
Everyone gets a bottle cap,
but that's all.
Everything resets to zero
and you all start with one.
Okay.
Sound good?
That's a deal with me.
You all have one bottle cap.
Since I had zero.
I can see it's already working out in your favor.
And we get a plus five bottle cap bonus to a roll.
Wait, no, I have a bottle cap.
That is not.
I have it in my hand.
So if you want it, then Grant's not going to get one.
You either all get one or you get one and Skid gets two.
And Joe gets none.
And Joe gets none.
So the options are each of the four of us gets one. Get one and skid gets two. And Joe gets no. And Joe gets none. So we all, I don't have one.
The options are,
each of the four of us gets one.
Get one and that's it.
So that's four total bottle caps.
Right.
The other option is skid gets two,
Joe gets one and I get one.
No,
Joe gets,
you get one and skid gets two.
Joe gets zero.
Well then I guess we have to go
with the one bottle cap each.
It's more bottle caps total.
Matthew,
you're very generous.
Economically expedient.
Can we still hand them off
to other people?
That's another question.
No, you have to use them on yourself.
Oh, come on.
But that's how we foster.
And if you're 11th level, you only get a plus five.
It rounds down.
Can we use it for a minus five on your roll?
No.
Really?
Yeah.
So on the killing blow, I have two hit points left.
You do 40 points of damage on a swing.
I can't turn in a bottle cap for a minus five to that roll.
I'll think about it.
How about that?
Or I'll take it.
What if?
I'll take it.
That's what my parents would say when it was eventually going to be a no.
Yeah.
I'll think about it.
It would shut me up.
Yeah.
I'll think about it.
That always means no.
I would like to respectfully appeal the decision that we can't give them to each other.
And I'll tell you why.
Grant and I have a lot of healing to do in our relationship.
It's true.
Yeah.
That is my argument.
We don't want to drive the table further apart, Troy.
You know?
This game is about bringing people together.
All right.
You can give each other the bonus, but you only get your bonus.
So if Grant is 12th level now, right?
No, not yet.
But whoever owns the bottle cap.
You just leveled them up, and you didn't tell me that I leveled up.
I didn't know what level you are.
So you're all 11th, right?
Yeah.
Give me some round of applause.
11th level.
Only one of us made it from level one up.
Who'd have thought?
Are four bears and I on the same XP track?
Because you came in at full level.
You have a little more than four bears.
I have a little bit more than four bears.
That's a good amount.
You're the head of the track, yeah.
You're the king of the castle.
King of the castle.
Wow, wow, wee, wow.
Let me ask you this.
Bottle caps aside.
Bottle caps aside.
How many of you thought you were going to open these doors
into a boss fight with Skirkotla?
I'll raise my hand.
Something similar to that.
I thought there would be something.
I thought it would be like the other buildings.
There would be like three rooms.
Right, right.
And it may well be.
But Joe, you pretty much thought walk-in boss fight.
Sure.
I mean, I thought that, yeah, I thought it could be three rooms.
I didn't think it was going to be another dungeon crawl that's going to be 25 episodes.
Because that is what we're looking at right here.
Unless one of these rooms is enormous.
Is it how long it lasts if we're entertaining along the way?
No, no.
I just say I didn't expect that at all.
I see.
Like a long, drawn-out crawl into the tomb of Nargum Steelhand.
That's what this seems like now.
It's a tomb, like a tomb with traps and secret rooms and secret passages.
Two of which you already found.
I didn't expect that in the least.
Here's the two reasons that we might have thought that we would be going into the boss fight quickly.
One is that it was such a grind to get through the camp,
so we thought maybe we'd be getting our just desserts after that hard work there.
The other thing, though, that, Joe, you might not be thinking of,
Troy might be trying to deceive us.
He purposely said Grant usually scopes out how large the room is
based off my fog of war, and he fogged out an entire map
and put us in the bottom right corner.
So this could be a misdirect from Troy,
but I'm more in Joe's camp for it being a huge tomb.
It could also be one of those dungeons like we played
in Jade Region I'll just say
where most of the dungeon was
underground so we have
literally no idea how big it was
it was like a tower that extended beneath the earth
much farther I will say this
I'm super psyched about it
I just wish that the whole camp was shorter
not that I didn't have any fun but I mean
it's just crazy how long that took because I think it's i love the idea of a tomb embedded in the in
into the mountain and it could just keep going deeper and deeper into the mountain i think that's
really cool have we done a true dungeon crawl in giant slayer in giant slayer no i mean just the
fort was like the closest thing vault of thorns might have been the yeah yeah you're right but
even that even that had a weird like you weird interdimensional kind of aspect to it that kind of might invalidate it.
And it was pseudo-linear.
I don't think you had many options.
Like here, you already have three options.
Right.
Doorway to the north, doorway to the west, and an open passageway.
Yeah, the vault was pseudo-linear.
That's a really good way to put it.
This looks like a true dungeon crawl in the Gygaxian harness and tradition.
Yeah.
I mean, personally, this is my favorite type of favorite way to play the game.
I like.
Well, you also said you're very excited for us to be in here.
I don't know if it's just to get your killing on, to get your blood thirst sated.
I just like.
Or if it's you just like what they did with this part of the adventure.
I like.
I like. I like I like
I like dungeons
Like that's why I'm excited
If we can
Hit the 35k goal
On our Patreon
To be able to do Emerald Spile
I like dungeons
I like
What's behind that door
Should we take that door
Or that door
Is there a trap
I mean I just
I love it
That's my favorite way to play
By the way guys
We really need a union organizer
When Troy brought up that rule
We should have just walked out
That's true
Yeah we
Walked
You unionize Players union Players union Roleplaying players let's take a t-shirt players union they try to
in poughkeepsie and they shut them down
joe is our donald fear
uh our marvin miller oh my god we could start recruiting at
packs unplugged yeah start passing out flyers join the rppu i think even whispers of a union Here's our Marvin Miller. Oh, my God. We could start recruiting at PAX Unplugged. Yeah.
Start passing out flyers.
Join the RPPU.
I think even whispers of a unionization goes against our entire contract.
Aren't you a union member?
Cut the mic.
Cut the mic.
He's not even allowed to do this podcast.
Cut that out.
I think it's my edit.
All right.
So you guys come into this tomb, you want to call it.
Tomb.
You see outside two statues of this female frost giant looking resplendent in armor and weapons.
This area is built to honor her.
You see a birth date hundreds of years ago and no death date.
This woman, Skirkatla, Jotun's daughter.
Jotun's daughter.
Jotun's daughter.
She was able to raise this camp to be a stronghold,
a training ground for giants to join the Storm Tyrant's army.
Now, some of them, the the lieutenants as you found out
from figimon they're moving on the best of the best are moving down south but in the meantime
skirkala had raised a veritable army and you saw them lork saw them up in the tree during
reconnaissance man like practicing going through small folk villages and stuff. Like, they had dummies, target practice,
with your images on it.
Crazy.
Like, badass.
Now, the camp has disbanded,
but the threat of Skirkotla remains.
And if she could raise an army once,
what's to say she couldn't do it again?
Well, now you are in her house.
Right when you walk in,
you notice
something strange
on the walls. Perhaps they're concealing
some sort of a door.
There are two torches
in the northeast corner and the
southwest corner, giving off an eerie
blue light.
The rest of the room is darkness, but you have dark vision cast on you,
those of you who don't have it, so you can see perfectly.
You can see perfectly that to the north, a 20-foot-wide set of double doors.
To the west, 20-foot-wide set of double doors.
And then to the northwest, there's a passageway just leading into darkness.
There's a passageway just leading into darkness.
Out from these two secret doors,
in a, what's like a story way I could say this,
a surprise round.
Bullshit!
So immersive.
As an immediate action,
out bursts,
not one, but
two frost giants.
Oh, they were frost
giants. Guarding
this room, you would think. Waiting
for you to come in. Maybe their eyes were behind a
picture following you along.
They come bursting
out. Oh no.
Into the light. So the room
is mostly in darkness,
but beyond the light provided by the corners of the room,
there's another 20 feet or so of dim light.
These do not look like the forest giants
you've been fighting in the village.
They look a little beefier, a little stronger.
But do they look corporeal?
They do appear to be corporeal.
Okay.
But they do also appear to be angry.
Oh.
Immediate action.
Open the door.
Move action.
Come out.
Roll for initiative.
Oh, my goodness.
Oh, my goodness.
Diplomacy check.
Oh, my God.
What's going on in this show?
We were just coming by to... Oh, dear God. Axe to on in this show? We were just coming by to...
Oh, dear God.
Axe to the face.
I love this kid.
All right.
All right.
We have two hands up in the air.
I don't like that, Baron.
In celebration from Bear Bear.
Please, Baron, you have the floor.
Natural 20 for a 33.
Oh, my God, man.
Have you ever had time for a natural Twanzoni?
I also rolled a natural 20. Oh. For a, man. Have you ever had time for a natural Twanzoni?
I also rolled a natural 20.
Oh.
For a?
28.
Okay.
Baron is ridiculous.
Pembroke?
16.
16 for Pembroke.
Damn. Four bears.
15.
I thought I did okay.
Not so much.
You were wrong.
I was wrong.
Last place of all the friends.
All right. They moved into the. Last place of all the friends. All right.
They moved into the room as part of their surprise round.
That's it.
It is round one.
Baron.
Baron Ashby takes a five-foot step back and does a full round action.
He doos.
What do you do?
What do you do?
How do you doos?
Does a full round action, spends a great point, and targets the weapon.
Is there a weapon in his hands?
There sure is.
Oh, boy.
Here we go.
19 on the die.
The valley, you're done.
No damage.
And counter over.
Weapon flies out of his hands.
That's it.
No save.
Just falls out of his hands.
Weapon drops to the floor.
Beautiful.
Flies 1D6 squares away.
Is that your action? That's a full round action? That is a beautiful full round floor. Beautiful. Flies 1D6 squares away. Is that your action?
That's a full round action?
That is a beautiful full round action.
Nice.
Feyraza Alced.
Bottlecap.
What a great round.
Oh, I love it.
Feyraza is going to bank to the left to get away from this guy.
She's flying.
Yeah, who else is flying in this room?
Bank to the left.
Hembrook.
Hembrook and Feyraza.
Fly!
Oh, I couldn't take the five-foot step.
I'm just 15 feet in the air.
Do I need to do a hover check?
Or can you five-foot step while you're flying?
That's the other question, because I'm flying, too.
I don't believe you can.
No, you can't.
So you've got to roll a hover check.
Okay, so that's just a...
Well, okay.
Now, there's something we've been getting wrong.
No.
Two.
I think that that might be the fly spell you're thinking of.
And this is not the fly spell.
Well, you have a fly speed, I think, so maybe you don't have to.
Oh, shit.
I don't know.
I'm sorry for asking.
I don't think you can take a five-foot step while you're flying.
Okay, but I was flying in the air like 15 feet up.
And then do I hover?
Do I have to do a hover check?
I think you get a bonus to your fly check that makes the hover check a gimme.
Right. I think that's what we've been getting wrong I think you get a bonus to your fly check that makes the hover check a gimme. Right.
I think that's what we've been getting wrong, is rolling it when your bonus to the fly.
Yeah, your subject gains a bonus on fly skill checks equal to half your caster level.
Right.
So what is your caster level, Joe?
11.
11.
Plus 5.
Plus 5.
And what is your fly?
My fly with that bonus is 10.
So do I auto make it?
No, it's 15.
It's DC 15.
All right, here we go. So it's not automatic.
It would be automatic
for Pembroke, I think.
Okay, so this will determine
whether or not
I'm on the ground
if I fell before that happened.
Right?
Right.
Okay.
16 on the die.
Okay.
Beautiful.
You hover away.
Feyraza, you bank left.
Bank left and Feyraza
will draw a wand.
Draw a wand?
Like in the air, you draw it?
No, she draws you out of her.
Oh!
You're sketching a wand?
No, it's not the time, Matthew!
I had an idea!
And you're a horrible artist!
Yeah.
Is that a fishing rod?
One syllable.
All right.
Pembroke, you are up.
Pembroke is hovering,
and you can't do it automatically,
we've discovered.
And he is going to cast
one of his new spells.
At this new level, he is going to
cast Starfall.
Starfall!
What?
Yes, it is.
Please tell me it affects everyone.
It affects both, no,
it affects both the giants.
Let me read the text of the spell.
You release a number of powerful force bolts from your body equal to your level.
Each strikes a creature within line of sight.
No more than three bolts can strike a single target.
Creatures take 3d12 hit points of damage and a reflex saves half set.
All those that fail their saving throw are also blinded and knocked prone.
Oh my goodness!
I wish I had a bottle cap.
I know, right?
Reflex saves? Yes.
And the save DC is...
22.
22. Not a gimme. These are big,
lumbering giants.
Alright, the one that is nearest Baron.
Barely. Man, this is going to be hard to get.
23.
Wow.
23 on that one.
There's no way I'm going to make it both times.
Gah!
Fail on the one to the north.
Wow.
The one to the north is blind and prone?
Yes.
The one to the south takes 29 points of damage.
What kind of damage is it?
Force damage. Okay. I love it! 29 points of damage. What kind of damage is it? Force damage.
Okay.
I love it!
29 points of force.
The one to the north
takes 62 points of damage.
Oh my god.
And is blinded and prone.
So Pembroke is floating
there in the air
and he has his belt
and this light glows out of him
and these bolts
of pure white force energy
shoot out and strike
both of these giants.
Blinded.
Slamming into them.
And prone.
So cool.
And prone.
That is awesome, dude.
Gross.
Four bear.
One is without a weapon.
The other one is blinded prone.
Four bears.
Wait, the one without the weapon
is the one near Baron.
Ah.
Which one should we go after?
Ah.
Four bears is directly in the middle of the room.
Okay. Four bears directly in the middle of the room. Okay. Four bears
directly in the middle of the room. The one that
is blinded and went prone.
He is going to
shout a charge
and just charge at this thing while it's weak.
How do you shout a charge?
You know.
He's just going to scream like a maniac.
It's a joke. Run at this.
I cannot take an attack of opportunity while blind, so go right.
And you're prone, which I think is a minus 40 or AC.
I've already put that all in.
And he's going to charge up and draw his mace.
And then actually charges.
It's not a full.
I'm just wondering if I could do a swift action if I'm doing a charge.
It's a full round action to charge.
And you could do a swift action.
All right, so then I'm going to swift action bane my mace.
Giant's bane.
Gross.
So swift action bane the mace, and then I'm going to bust out a die that I got at our
live show in LA.
This is from Dave in London.
Oh.
Dave, thank you so much.
His friend, I think it was Adam, brought it over.
Okay.
It was like, my friend Dave said, you need to take this die and roll it on air.
Got it.
This one's for you.
Attack roll international edition.
International.
Here it comes.
Come on, buddy.
Natural four.
Son of a...
Sorry, London Dave.
Hey, London Dave. Hey, London Dave.
Shut up!
Shut up, London Dave.
I've never seen a man crush a die in his hand like that.
Oh, actually, well, you know what?
I've got to add this up, because that is a 19 against, with his AC minus four.
And blinded.
Right, right.
Which is a penalty to Dex and all that stuff.
That's a 19.
And it's a miss.
Oh, that is a... That is a miss. Thatx and all that stuff. That's a 19. And it's a miss. Oh, that is a...
That is a miss.
That's a miss.
Prone.
Blind.
Yeah, I have both conditions on Hero Lab.
Okay.
Trusting the power of the AHL.
Then that's the old turn-to-ski.
All right, now, this comes through.
You go swinging and miss.
Yeah, of course.
It is now blind and prone.
I miss a blind guy laying on the ground!
And would you say it's a 50% miss chance if it tries to attack in the square where you're at,
feeling your blade come crunching against its armor and not doing any damage?
Sure, yeah.
Is that 50%?
Yes, that would be...
And you're staying prone to do this.
Staying prone.
So that will affect my attack, so I will not put on power attack.
And I rolled a natty 17 on the die, which is probably a hit, but a 27.
All right!
Swings into the wrong space.
And then second attack, I had a much lower to hit.
Again, would have been a hit, but a 45 on the sealman.
So this one just
swing, swing, miss,
miss. Thank you, Pembroke.
It's a starfall.
A giant
scrumble.
I love it. This one
down here near Baron
not enjoying
that magic bullet
that came flying at him
will hit city. that magic bullet that came flying at him will, uh...
Oh, shit city.
Pick up his axe.
We shit this city.
All right, he's gonna pick up his axe
and move 40 feet north away from this.
Magical hamburger?
Yeah, picks up his axe.
First action, second action,
just moves north to get far away from this fucking OP dwarf.
Round two.
It is the OP dwarf's turn.
OP dwarf will do a hover check.
Let's see if he makes it.
17.
Crushes it.
You know why he's hovering?
So he can do a full round action.
Because now with his new gun, whose name I have yet to reveal.
Oh.
Just read it, read it.
Nope.
Can now attack from where he is
40 feet away instead of 20 feet away.
Full round attack action.
On the giant.
Wow.
And you're more than 40.
Yeah, you're definitely right.
I'm exactly 40 feet away
from the giant.
All right, first attack
is a natural 20.
Natural 20.
Natural 20. Natural 20! Natural 20!
Yeah!
Unbelievable.
Unbelievable.
Look at that.
I see it.
I see it.
I believe you.
Confirm?
To confirm.
To confirm.
18.
The time for the confirm?
Oh, my God.
Oh, my goodness.
Holy cow.
Fan critical.
Oh, we got a fan critical.
Fan critical?
I'm going to throw up. Oh, my God. We're going to have to go to the fan crit board here. Oh, we got a fan critical. Fan critical? I'm going to throw up.
Oh, my God.
We're going to have to go to the fan crit board here.
Oh, God.
Okay.
Double damage is quadruple damage.
This one comes in from...
That was only the first attack.
This one comes in from Rex in scenic Redwood Shores, California.
Oh, beautiful, beautiful.
Thanks for commanding Conquer.
That's where it came from.
This one is called Soft Underbelly.
Your attack has exposed a weakness in your target's defense's double damage,
and the next critical threat by any creature against the target
for the remainder of the encounter automatically confirms.
Wow.
No save.
That is a cool crit.
Very cool.
Awesome.
Soft Underbelly.
You exposed a weakness, and a forebear sees it.
Or actually, if you see it on your next shot, auto-confirm.
If he survives.
Yeah, four times damage.
Four times damage.
On your brand new gun.
Let me do six.
Ow.
All right.
Okay, we're doing good so far.
Gruesome.
And add on another 2D6 versus giant for funzos.
Seven.
All right, the total is, let me just tabulate the numbers.
81 points of damage.
81!
That's 81 if you're listening at home.
Oh, my God.
How many was that?
81.
What?
I'm going to throw up.
I think it's really not fair that bottle caps aren't rolled twice.
I agree.
What if that was a plus five?
Oh, boy.
Second attack.
Second attack.
13 on the die for a total of 25 against touch AC.
It is.
It's a giant.
Minimum damage.
He's still prone, right?
Yes.
And blind.
Oh, so he gets a bonus.
He doesn't even see where it's coming from.
So that's six.
He just felt like the worst pain he's ever felt in his life.
He has no idea what's happening.
Popped him right in the liver.
That is 21 points of damage.
Okay.
Okay.
The final attack.
Final attack.
Oh, 12 against that, JC.
It's still ahead.
Oh, my God. Of course it's still ahead. Oh my god.
Of course it is.
Okay, so that's 11, 14.
29 points of damage.
And he's dead.
What a sad life.
Level 11 encounter.
Baron kills him.
One round.
Awesome.
The reach on that gun.
Baron, you've got like three episodes left, buddy.
Enjoy them.
Ferraza Alcet.
I mean, I had a plan, but do I even need to participate in this combat?
No, I certainly don't cast any spells.
All right.
Ferraza will attempt a hover check and makes it,
and then she's going to use the wand to begin casting.
Use the wand to begin casting Pembroke!
Pembroke is
gonna
I think
Oh boy. I think he's just gonna do
a pair of
magic missiles. One quickened. No, no.
He's just gonna do a regular magic missile. Okay.
A little magic missile action.
And that is 18 points of damage.
Oh, God.
Just lit up with magic missiles.
And he's going to stay hovering where he is.
Stay hovering.
It is Four Bear's turn.
Four Bear's so sorry, the guy you were trying to kill is dead.
All of a sudden, he's just like,
Blat, blat, blat!
And he just dies right in front of him,
so he just turns maniacally,
looking at the other Frost Giant,
and doesn't sit.
No, he's not going to do a charge.
He's just going to move up to this giant,
and he will provoke an attack of opportunes.
First of all, a couple things are going to happen.
Okay.
As you move into the space right behind where Faraz is hovering,
it sets off a trap.
Oh, no.
And all of a sudden, around every single one of you in the room,
ice starts to swirl.
And you see it at your feet.
Start at your feet.
It starts encapsulating your toes, your feet.
It goes up your legs and starts to try and put
an icy prison around every
single one of you.
We're not flying that
high, so there won't be much damage.
Yeah, this is going to be very interesting. I need
everybody to roll a reflex save.
Auto fail.
Fail. Fail. That's 13. Auto-fail. Fail. Fail.
That's 13.
16 for the bears.
It's going to be a fail for me, too.
17? 18.
Four fails!
Wait, it is a fey
or plant-targeted effect? It is not.
Matthew, I love
your moxie. That's exactly the type of question
we need to be asking. Oh, my God.
This is fantastic.
You all failed.
All right.
So you are all encased in nine inches of ice.
Mine?
Yes.
So is this that same thing that happened before to Pembroke?
Outside the statue of Tremere?
Statue of Tremere?
I can't remember what happened outside the statue of Tremere.
Well, I don't think it was.
It certainly wasn't nine inches thick.
But remember, he got encased in ice
from that creature. You did.
You are encased in ice, and
because all of you failed,
let me just make sure. Thank God you're
casting endure elements on us every day.
Well, the flying people just must fall. If the creature fails its save,
it is helpless. Those of you
who are flying fall to the ground.
And the ice
will take the damage. Okay.
So I'll tell you right now, the ice
has
27 hit points. Damn.
It also has a break DC. It doesn't
have any hardness. So those of you who fall
to the ground, the ice
is going to take that damage. Oh, great.
Who is flying? I am.
Me. And Baron.
And Baron. And I was pretty high up.
Baron, Pembroke, and Feyraza are all flying.
Yeah, I was only 15.
I said it earlier in the episode.
All right, Baron, your ice takes three points of damage.
Yours takes four, Pembroke.
And Feyraza, yours takes eight.
Yours is because I was higher up.
Yeah.
And the total points, so we can just keep track.
27 total points.
But you are all helpless.
Do you want to read the helpless condition?
No, no need.
No, you know what it is?
Paralyzed.
It's pretty self-explanatory.
Yeah, you are.
I mean, the worst thing about helpless is that it makes no sense that this giant wouldn't
just coup de grace each one of us and end the adventure.
It cannot coup de grace you because of the ice.
Ah, okay. I actually read a long
series of posts. There are some people who are like,
fuck it, you're helpless, you can be coup de gras'd, but
because of the ice, you are protected by that.
However, it can now go to each of you and kill
you one at a time. Okay.
As it most likely will do.
It has to break through the ice and then it just gets
regular attacks against us, but the rest of us
are still locked up. Yes, So you can't help each other.
Wait, so who is it frozen?
So it's all one-on-one combat.
Wait, all of us are frozen.
All of you are frozen.
And you know what?
In your icy prison, everybody take nine points of cold damage.
Wow.
Just right now.
In your prison of ice.
I thought this combat was over.
Yeah.
Over.
I did, too.
Troy, that's why you can't get that down on Baron.
I had a crit.
That was lucky.
Lots of things are lucky.
Listen, this is why I never get down.
You never know when things are going to turn in another direction.
Yep, that's what I always say.
I also lost my spell.
Oh, yeah.
That actually would have helped us.
Oh, no.
I forgot.
Wow.
Yes.
Wow.
Helpless.
Yes.
Four bears. your turn ends.
Yeah, that's unfortunate.
It is the frost giant's turn.
What the hell do I want to do here?
I got that dwarf firing a gun that did pretty good damage.
He saw him kill his friend from across the way.
But he's going to break him out, and he he's gonna be one-on-one with a guy
firing a gun at him. Yeah.
I got this warrior
who ran up and triggered the trap.
He looks pretty beefy.
Looks like a guy that
could probably take a
punch or two, as it were.
So break him out and see, coward.
Behind him, having fallen
to the ground, is a woman.
A caster, perhaps of some sort.
She's got a decent enough intelligence.
She's wearing glasses.
Wearing glasses.
She's got to be smart.
She's got to be smart.
And then far on the other side of the room is an old man.
Who fired off two spells at him.
Woo!
Look at him. He's so happy.
I mean, I'm just... My heart's beating
out of him. Yeah, you're in that spot where your heart starts
beating. He's going to take a
five-foot step
and he is going to start
cutting into
Feyraz's ice.
Oh, no.
This is going to be painful to watch.
He hits it.
He's probably going to break it on the first try.
How many hit points does it have left?
You said 27 total.
That's where it started.
I took eight from falling.
So it's got 15.
First hit breaks you free of your ice.
19.
Yeah.
First hit breaks the ice open.
All right.
And you are now laid bare.. 19. Yeah. First hit breaks the ice open. Alright. And you are now laid bare.
Second attack.
Yep.
No longer helpless, though. No longer helpless.
Take that off. That'll change
your AC dramatically.
I didn't put help aside so everything was going to be a hit.
Times three crit, by the way,
for this weapon. It is
going to be, not a crit, but a
29 to hit.
Yeah.
No, it misses.
You take, oh man, really bad roll.
29 points of damage.
Okay.
And it is a new round,
Baron the Helpless.
Can you do anything of interest while helpless Mental stuff
You can breathe
It does say you can breathe
Yeah
Paralyzed, held bound, sleeping unconscious
Otherwise completely to an opponent's mercy
Has a dexterity of zero
I mean
You could try to let me do a knowledge check
But that's up to you
I don't see anything about not being able to do knowledge checks.
It depends on the nature of what made them helpless.
Yeah, well, you can attempt to break out.
Okay.
But you're helpless.
How can you break out if you're helpless?
I don't understand how to break out if I'm helpless.
Yeah, I mean, it has to break, DC, because if you had failed, you would have just had to...
Because you can break your friends.
Right.
Right.
And if you had made your save, you would have just been entangled.
Oh, wow. What a huge difference.
But now you're just helpless with one person to save
you, unless you can tell me there's something you can
do. I don't see it. Feyraza, you
are up. Okay.
Feyraza is going to
cast a spell. Okay.
I need you to roll a concentration check, because
you are within its reach. I'm going to cast
defensively. Okay.
Roll the check.
Hmm.
I'll roll the check first.
Bottle cap?
And then I'll...
No, that should be fine.
Natural 20.
Okay.
Okay, so the question...
So I'm going to cast a flame strike.
Okay.
But the question is, do I center it on Baron and Pembroke and break them out of their ice,
or on four bears and the frost giant deal the damage and break four bears out of it.
Do that thing.
All right, I'll do that thing.
Do that second thing.
That second thing.
Okay, so I'll center this so it doesn't hit me.
And it will be...
Wait for it.
How much damage does it do?
11d6 points of damage.
11d6? That's not a number. I don't know 11 D6 points of damage. 11 D6?
That's not a number.
I don't know if we'll get enough damage.
Half is fire damage.
Okay.
Okay.
And the other half results from divine power.
What did you decide on?
Four bears and the giant.
Four bears and the giant.
Benny and the giant. Sounds like a children's story.
Roll reflex save.
All right, you roll reflex save. I don't have to. 20. You save. All right, you roll a reflex save.
I don't have to.
20.
You pass.
Okay, so you're going to take half damage.
Okay, tell me what's fire, what's regular.
Oh, dear.
Oh, dear.
Oh, boy.
It just says half the damage.
So literally half of what I'm about to say.
It's all fire damage, right?
No, half of it's fire damage.
Half holy and half divine.
That's fine.
Okay, so it's a terrible roll. Oh, come on!
35 points of fire.
35 points of damage. Oh, that's fine.
You take half. Right. And then half
of that is fire. So 17 points of damage,
9 fire aid regular
level set. Sure. I'll give you that.
I was just worried you wouldn't get to the 27.
And then you are out of your ass. Yes. Beautiful round.
Well done. Good job. Good job, Matthew. And then Far are out of your ass. Yes. Beautiful round. Well done. Good job.
Good job, Matthew.
And then Farazza.
Now, wait a minute.
How much damage was it altogether?
35.
So 4Bez is going to take some of that extra damage.
Yeah.
He just waved it off.
Just ignore that rule.
Yeah, we'll take eight points of damage.
And then Farazza will take a...
Oh, she's still on the ground.
Farazza is lying on the ground
what did we say
about five foot like rolling away as a
five foot step is that possible
crawl is a move action
you can't provoke
provoke you'll be fine
yeah I'm sure I'll be fine
she will
I mean I guess that's the only thing she can do
I can't wild shape because I didn't take that fucking feat
That would have been a good feat to have right here
It's a good feat
You know how good feet
Lork
You know what, she's just going to stay where she is
Stay where she is
At first I was nervous
I'll ready an action?
Okay.
I can do that, right?
You ready to move action?
I don't think you can.
After taking an action.
You already took your action. I can't ready my move action.
I'm pretty sure you'll stay where she is.
At first, I was nervous.
It's like now another combatant has been freed.
But I realize you put your hopes in Joe O'Brien.
You're doing damage against this.
It is Pembroke's turn first.
Does it say you cannot take mental actions?
Yes, you're paralyzed.
You can't do anything.
Can't do anything.
No, it says you are helpless by one of those conditions.
It is a list of conditions.
So it depends on what is causing the helpless state.
So it's up to GM's description with inside of there.
You're frozen but conscious and can breathe
So you can take purely mental actions
Alright so
But you have no line of effect
And I have no line of effect to you
So I think this is
I think we ran into a similar thing
Last time
I wanted to try dimension step
I want to like
Dimension step myself 50 feet into the air and fall.
Cool.
Dimension step 50 feet into the air, and that's just a purely mental action.
Yeah, because there's no verbal or somatic component.
So you don't have to move or speak at all.
And last time we allowed you to do it, right?
I can't remember.
He didn't dimension step out of the ice.
He did it, and then afterwards people said that he shouldn't have been able to without a roll.
But Skid had a very compelling case.
What was the roll that they would have?
A Concentration Check while grappled when he was inside the Colossus.
That was a different thing.
That was a different thing.
Now we're talking about this.
This is when we had the Thremir Statue, right?
It was when he did it.
This, you don't have the grapple condition.
You just have the grapple condition you just have uh the helpless uh condition right um i i mean what does it work like
uh it functions like dimension door except there are no there's no verbal or semantic
says that specifically yeah it says that specifically because there's a verbal component
for dimension door there's no verbal component it Dimension Door. There's no verbal component. It's an extraordinary ability, right? Yeah.
Exceptional.
Exceptional?
Supernatural.
So it's not even spell-like.
No.
It doesn't mimic a spell because it's not.
Oh, man, this is a tough one.
It's a tough one.
I mean, to me, it sounds like he should be able to do it.
It's also cool. This is Dimensional Steps?
Yes. I'm sure it's cool for Troy to just keep him in the's also cool. This is dimensional steps. Yes.
I'm sure it's cool for Troy
to just keep him in the ice.
Right.
Cool is relative, Matthew.
That's better for Troy.
You can use this ability
to teleport up to 30 feet
per wizard level per day
as a standard action.
Must be used in five foot increments.
Does not provoke.
And where does it say
it doesn't use the components?
There's, I know,
it's not on there.
I know I've looked it up before.
Like, there's no verbal... We've gone through this a million
times. Right. There's no verbal, there's no
semantic component. It's crazy.
And this is... How do you have this? This is your
arcane school? This is... Yeah, because of my school.
Yeah, I mean, I
don't have the
time to look it all up. I feel
like we got hell for it last time, but I can't
remember why. We've gotten hell before, but
it's still
definitely up for debate.
It wasn't anything like,
oh yeah, you're 100% right, we shouldn't be able to do this.
It doesn't require concentration?
It does require concentration.
Okay.
But that's the one thing it does require
is concentration. Right.
I would say roll a concentration check as the sort of compromise, if you will.
He is helpless in trying to do something that he's taking damage.
It's an extreme situation.
He's also taking damage, you know, taking nine points of damage every round.
Yeah, concentration applies to everything.
Okay, concentration check.
35. That sounds applies to everything. Okay. Concentration check. 35. That sounds
good to me.
How high is the ceiling?
The ceiling's here.
20 feet high.
Shit.
What? The ceiling's at 20 feet high.
Really? Yeah.
I think I said this last one. How much falling damage?
I took more than 20 feet. No, you took 2d6.
I gave them 1d6.
Oh, okay.
Well, I thought they were way harder than that.
You have to keep doing it.
This is all pointless.
I go to 20 feet in the air and then just...
You come crashing down.
Well, can you do it over and over?
Yeah, you can keep doing it.
Your shell takes 7 points of damage.
Okay.
Chip, chip, chip it away.
Chip, chipperoo.
What if we teleport the giant inside of his
ice shell that's still around?
That would be brilliant. Yes.
If there were anything like that.
There is a case to be made that he didn't bring
the ice with him. That's true.
We talked about that last time, too.
And I don't...
That would be something to discuss on another podcast.
I'll say
if it's attached to my skin that way,
I don't know what would differentiate it from clothing or gear.
That's fair.
All right, it is Forbear's turn.
First of all, everyone take nine points of cold damage.
No, thank you.
I'm sorry, the people still in the ice, so just Baron and Pems.
Done.
All right, this is tough.
Yeah.
Get up or don't get up.
It's not not tough up It's not not tough
It's not not tough
Were you prone?
Yeah, well, oh no, I guess it just froze me in place
The only people that were prone were the ones that fell from the top
That is enormous
You're the only one that's not prone
Time to go nuts though, Autumn
Time to go nuts
You wanna get nuts?
Let's get nuts
I don't see a better option at this moment than just trying to fight this guy, so we'll
see what happens.
Alright, buddy.
I'm glad you came to that conclusion.
Yeah, I mean, just trying to old-fashioned just swing away.
I'm gonna hit him with Firas's body.
Just whack, whack, whack.
It's an old-fashioned attack.
Alright, let's see.
Let me remove the prone condition.
I forgot that I was not flying.
You idiot.
Ooh, okay.
This is tough.
Okay, I'll take a swing.
I'm just going to take a swing.
Okay.
Let's just take a swing.
Natural three.
Great.
So, great.
That's a miss.
And then I need a natural 20.
Natty 19.
That's a 22. 22. I just did 22 to him. It's a miss. And then I need a natural 20. Natty 19. That's a 22.
22.
Adjusted 22 to hit.
Is a miss.
Yeah.
Okay.
Why is that so low?
Because I'm fighting defensively and using my defensive bonuses.
Oh.
Yeah.
So that means Troy's going to avoid you and attack Firas.
It's my turn.
What's he going to do?
Maybe, maybe not.
Should I cleave?
Oh, yeah. Should I go to cleave land? Oh, no. He turn. What's he going to do? Maybe, maybe not. Should I cleave? Oh, yeah.
Should I go to cleave land?
Oh, no, he's got cleave?
All right, LeBron.
I think it's tough because with cleave,
you get your highest base attack bonus on both,
but I have to hit both of you.
It doesn't know that four bears is impossible to attack.
That's not true.
He's not at all impossible to attack.
Either way, he's going to be cleaving from Feyraza to four bears.
Okay.
They're both within reach.
But, yeah, let's try for a cleave and try for that times three crit.
First chance.
Got to hit Feyraza to even get this freebie attack against four bears. Yeah.
31.
You made it.
Yeah! So you're telling me there's a chance. Alright, this
is going to be, ooh, baby!
36
points of damage. Oh, gnarly.
And then... Oh, I am hurt.
And then against four bears,
your savior, the man that was
supposed to save you all, a natty
19 on the die.
Here comes the damage.
Oh, not terrible.
Not awful.
32 points of damage.
All right.
This is fun.
Man.
Ruh-buh-buh-buh-buh-buh-buh-buh-buh-buh-buh-buh-buh-buh-buh-buh-buh-buh-buh-buh-buh-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah- Nah As your friends die slowly in an icy prison. It is a new round.
It is a new day.
And it is Baron's turn.
Moving right along.
It is Farazza's turn.
Farazza will wild shape.
That's not provoke.
Oh, no.
All right.
Into a penguin. Please be a penguin. Into a... Penguin.
Please be a penguin.
Into a target.
If there was ever a time to be a penguin.
I'd play the rare target bird.
Turn into a clay pigeon.
I'm a baboon and my ass is just a bullseye.
Ah, the bullseye baboon.
It's very rare.
A native to the long expanse.
She will wild shape into a boa constrictor.
Okay.
Which doesn't have to stand up.
Okay.
And take a five foot step away.
A five foot slither away.
Wow.
A five foot slither away.
That's cool.
Yeah, that's cool.
That is actually very cool.
It is Pembroke's turn.
I'm going to do the same thing again.
Same thing again.
I'm going to venture step up and fall.
Eight points of damage this time around.
You could do this all day, right?
I know.
I can do this all damn day.
You're only using 20 feet at a time.
Just imagine this, though.
You might have a concussion by the end of it.
If this was live action, what that would look like.
Six seconds later.
I think that's amazing.
This old man in a case of ice just using his powers to move.
Yeah.
Oh, that's great.
Four bears.
This thing is nasty. I told you frost giants just using his powers to move. Yeah. Oh, that's great. Four bears. This thing is nasty.
I told you frost giants aren't to be messed around.
Yeah, you guys had a good run against the camp,
but they were crud away from time three damage.
What do you got?
He is going to raise his shield.
Okay.
And do total defense.
Raise his shield, total defense.
Total defense. Total defense.
Everyone take nine more points of cold damage.
What's the floor made of, by the way?
By the way?
Stone.
Great.
And plants.
Plants everywhere.
Mostly plants.
Mostly plants.
You know what?
I'm giving cold damage to those of you who broke out,
and I don't think you'd take it. So let me just...
No, you weren't.
You told us not to take it.
Oh, you didn't take it?
No.
Okay, good.
I just wanted to make sure.
All right.
I wouldn't want to give you more damage than what you're supposed to get.
All right.
So you're going to do total defense.
What does that look like to the Frost Giant?
He just puts up the shield and his mace is up behind it, but he has his shield up in
front of him.
Okay.
I'm like, what's your AC?
All right. Nice try.
Okay, alright.
These guys have low light vision. I will say this.
Just so you know, my AC could be higher.
Oh, so is right where we are
darkness? Yes. Away from those
sconces? So shouldn't they be rolling concealment if they only have
low light? Who am I attacking?
No, everything, they can see.
They have low light vision, these guys.
You said it was complete darkness in here.
So they should be rolling 20% this turn.
We're outside of the sconces.
Who's outside of the sconces?
Your child that's attacking.
Right, right.
You mean like where I'm attacking forebears?
Yeah.
That doesn't affect you guys, but yeah.
Yeah, you're right.
I probably should have done it on those other ones too.
Wow.
Yeah, sorry guys.
Keep me honest.
And now it is going to, you know, that's an excellent point.
You almost straight up murdered me.
So I'm going to just do a grapple on four bears, because it can't see so well.
Grapple attack.
Is that going to be a 50% mischance while trying to grapple?
What's its weapon?
Great Axe.
It can't grapple with a two-handed weapon.
He's going to drop the Great Axe.
Oh, he's dropping the Great Axe.
Yeah, he's going to drop the Great Axe.
And hug you.
And just give you a bear hug.
Give you a little bear hug.
Bear's hug. A bear's hug. Yeah, just give me a bear hug. Give you a little bear hug. Bear's hug.
A bear's hug.
Yeah.
Would that be a missed chance on that?
I guess so.
If he's got low life vision, straight, so 20% miss.
I rolled a four on the concealment.
I've missed every single concealment attack.
Awesome.
So wait, hold on.
I have a question.
Is that considered a missed attack?
I mean, if a CMB is considered attack roll, then yeah.
So, I mean, just because you missed on the concealment, I wonder if that...
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Okay.
As an immediate action, I am going to take a five-foot step away.
Okay.
Interesting.
That is the sure-footed shield.
Whenever an enemy fails a combat maneuver
against the wielder three times a day,
I can immediately step five feet away.
So he holds up the shield, you do this move,
he misses, and I move
back, shield still up.
It's dark. Yes. Really cool.
Alright. It is a new
round. It's still barren.
And now Faraza as a snake. It's still Baron. Yeah.
And now Farazza as a snake.
And now he can get away.
Farazza will slither over to Baron.
Okay.
And unwild shape.
Slithers over to Baron, unwild shapes Pembroke.
Pembroke is going to do, by the way, it is a spell like ability.
It is.
Yeah. But that doesn't change anything really.
But now we know.
So he's going to do the same thing again.
Same thing again?
Pop up in the air, fall down.
Four points of damage.
For fuck's sake.
For fuck's sake.
Ship away.
Was that the hard for?
It was for the hard way.
And it is Four Bear's turn.
Baron and Pembroke take another nine points of damage.
Cold damage.
Just freezing inside
their icy cage.
All right.
Four bears.
what do you got?
Four bears is going to move
away from the giant
down to Baron.
Okay.
And he's going to take
a swing at Baron's ice.
Okay.
With his mace.
I hate it.
He's just going to reach down
and...
I mean, he doesn't have
to roll an attack roll, right?
I know. It's automatic attack. Seems pretty silly. It's just going to reach down and... I mean, he doesn't have to roll an attack roll, right? I know.
It's automatic attack.
Seems pretty silly.
Roll damage.
No hardness.
Right?
Well, if you roll a natural one, Joe, yeah, maybe it'll accidentally hit you.
Five.
Okay.
Five points of damage.
Come on.
Hey.
You should have charged.
You could have gotten a plus two.
19 points of damage, though.
19 points. All right.
It is the old Frosty's turn.
He can't even see us.
Right, but he saw you.
Yeah, you're right.
But he's coming down there and he's going to attack.
He's going to charge and swing at...
He does not have an axe in his hand.
You're right. You're right.
You're right.
Up there, he tried to grab at you.
He picks up the axe.
Let me just think this through.
I want to have my weapon. Pick up the axe
and one movement
down towards the life.
I'm still within range of you.
Why did he move?
I'm trying to get...
It hooked us up together. I can get within range. He can Why did he move? Why'd you just move him into the range? I'm trying to get... It hooked us up together.
I wanted to get it right.
I can get within range.
He can move 40 feet, so hold on here.
5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and I am in range of...
The bears.
Four bears.
Picks up his axe and moves.
That's his turn.
Still bought around.
Still bought around. And you are
within the range of his low light vision.
It is Baron's
turn. Baron, you just
feel, God, get me out!
Be better for me! Be better,
that's what I'm thinking. Ferraza.
The snake. We need another bear!
You see this like
huge Shoanti lift this
enormous mace up in the air.
And it just lays, boom!
And you don't feel anything.
There's no vibration.
You couldn't even make a vodka tonic with the amount of ice.
Do you remember football tryouts where the gentle giant kid,
they try to suit him up in pads and play line,
and he just won't hit anyone because he's such a pacifist?
That's what a four-bear says.
No, Grant, I don't remember that guy.
Were you the gentle giant?
No, he was not.
I started.
I beat up lots of people.
I was an awful person.
Cool, Grant.
Cool.
You should have just said yes.
I'm a huge bully.
He's the bully
that threatened
all of our listeners
when they were in high school.
I was in band two.
There were bullies in band.
That doesn't protect you. Those tuba jerks Yeah the tuba guys
I played trombone
Not tuba
I got beat up by the horn section
The other night
It was horrible
It was the wind section
I really took advantage of
The first chair finalist
Hit me with a chair
Barazza draws her quarterstaff
And whacks at Baron
One point of damage to her
One point of damage? Okay great What has this devolved into? Oh no I'm sorry Not one It whacks it bare in one point of damage. One point of damage?
Okay, great.
What has this devolved into?
Oh, no, I'm sorry.
Not one.
It's a one plus four.
Five points of damage.
Oh, great.
So we have 15 points left on this die.
Pembroke, how close are we on this ICK?
I have five points left on mine.
All right, it's 2d6.
I'll roll it on the table.
Three points of damage.
Oh, my God!
I saw it!
I saw it! I saw it!
This is amazing.
This is the craziest combat.
We need Baron and Pembroke to take another
nine points of damage. It just looks so comical.
It's like...
He's inside of there just going,
Son of a beast!
He hits the ground and just teleports back
and appears back up and hits, appears,
hits, appears. So yeah, Baron and Pembroke take another nine points of back up and hits, appears, hits, appears.
So yeah, Baron and Pembroke take another nine points of cold damage, and Four Bears, it's your turn.
Four Bears, let's just all remember whose fault this is, and that would be Joe's.
And that would be Joe's.
It's not my fault.
You triggered the trap.
You did trigger the trap.
That is my fault.
But you didn't know.
A hundred percent.
I forgot this was all based on a trap.
No light speed.
No light speed. No light speed.
No light speed.
All right, Four Bear's feeling the breath of this frost giant coming up behind them.
Want to use a cap?
It's too dangerous.
He's going to abandon Baron for the moment and step five feet up to the frost giant once again.
And then in his own Shawanti native language,
he's going to say,
I don't know.
I'm looking at all my numbers.
How do you say that?
How do you say that?
I don't know, man.
He's going to say,
Je ne sais quoi.
And hold up your shield again.
Total defense.
He speaks French.
So lame.
So lame.
He has that certain something. I don't know what it is. Something, but he can speak French. That's all speaks French. So lame. So lame. He has that certain something.
I don't know what it is.
He has that certain something, but he can speak French.
That's all I know.
All right here.
All right.
I got my axe.
I got a four bears there.
I'll go five foot step down.
And I'm going to do a full attack.
Can't decide if I want to use power attack. I like the damage that it lays out, but that to hit is really hard.
But, man, if I crit. So many options here. Just remember the concealment. I don't have if I want to use power attack. I like the damage that it lays out, but that to hit is really hard. But, man, if I crit, so many options here.
Just remember the concealment.
I don't have it right now.
You do have it.
No, I don't.
He steps into the light.
I'm not in the light.
It doesn't matter.
He has low light vision.
I'm saying outside of that light, I have another 20 feet.
I'm just not being shown on here of low light.
So that is full light, and outside of that is one more step.
And then outside of that, where I should have been rolling it, is where I was attacking you and Fey Ross.
Cool.
I thought you said it was low light around the lanterns or whatever.
No, it's...
I mean, the only fair thing to do here to make it up for us is to roll the concealment here.
You know, you'd be right.
Under any other circumstances.
I'm going to...
Worth a shot.
I liked it, Matthew.
I liked it.
I want to leave power attack on so bad! Just do it. I'm going to roll a 20. No, I'm going to Worth a shot I liked it Matthew I liked it I want to leave
Power attack on so bad
Just do it
You can roll a 20
Nah I'm gonna take it off
You can do what you want
You will absolutely
Roll a 20 in these
Three rolls
You know this
It's only two rolls
Oh
It's only two rolls
I haven't rolled one yet today
Alright here it is
That is gonna be
A 34 to hit
What's your
What's your AC
30 fucking 4
Oh no
You know if I had power attack on that wouldn't have been a hit
I mean this is every time with him
This is how he rolls it's amazing
24 points of damage
You must be wake up every morning so happy
24 points of damage
Well just another day of good luck for me
This one's gonna be a lot harder
But it could be
It could be natural
It is not and it is a miss So one hit This one's going to be a lot harder, but it could be. It could be a natural twinzo.
It is not, and it is a miss.
Okay.
So one hit. I think shit.
One miss.
It's a new round.
Baron.
There it is, everybody.
I found a way to silence that gun.
Yep.
Feyraza Alced.
Two whacks at Baron.
Two whacks.
Max damage, Ten points of damage
Huge
Five points left
Well I rolled eight
So you take a little bit of damage
From the quarterstaff
But you're out buddy
Alright
Yeah
Baron's out
Three points of damage
And I rolled eight points of damage
Alright so
I hit a little too hard
So would a Baron take five or three?
Three
He took three
Okay
Now it's Pembroke's turn.
Pembroke, you have only, what, two points left in this cage?
Yeah.
So this is probably when I'm going to roll boxcars,
and you'll end up taking ten points.
That's right.
Of course.
I know.
Oh, man.
I'm actually just going to go ten feet up.
Ten feet up.
If he rolls a one, I'm going to be really mad.
You're going to take nine points of damage if you let it go
It's worth the risk of doing two dice
Here it is
Oh it's a six
The worst possible result
Five points of damage to you
But you are free
I'm surprised at how entertaining
Being locked in an ice cage is
It's really fun
I highly recommend I really thought I could have killed one of you I'm surprised at how entertaining being locked in an ice cage is. This has been great. It's really fun.
Highly recommend.
I really thought I could have killed one of you.
Man, if both those frost giants were cooking and they just targeted each of you, that would have been great.
That's true.
Four bears, you're up.
What do you got, man?
What do you got?
You're going to shield bash him?
Yeah, he'll just lower his defenses and swing at this guy.
Nice.
They're no longer taking cold damage?
Yeah, no longer taking cold damage.
Well, here's the thing, though.
I don't have low light vision.
So that's all.
Didn't you give yourself dark vision?
Oh, yeah, you're right.
And he's in light.
Right.
Yeah, a big part of him is in light. All right, so I am going to five foot step up,
and I'm still going to fight defensively. Okay.
I want to give myself a chance. I'll allow it. To live.
Give him a chance. And I will
take a swing.
20
to hit. And then
second swing, miss.
Natural three. Miss. Did he miss? Miss.
Miss. Okay. I am
going to, seeing that the others
have come out of the ice, I am going to put four the others have come out of the ice I am going to put four bears
Between myself and Baron
With a five foot step
Was that a five foot step or did I move?
It seemed like a fifteen foot step
Let me see, I was right there, right?
Yeah, you were right there
Oh, and I took my move action
To stand up, by the way
Dimensional steps is a standard action Standard, you hit the ground Took a little damage action to stand up, by the way. Okay. Because that was a dimensional step. So it's a standard action.
Standard.
You hit the ground, took a little damage, and then stand up.
Baron still laying down, right?
Well, the question is, if we're still flying, are we floating?
Can we just go straight up, or do we have to stand up from prone and then fly?
That's what I don't know.
That's interesting.
Oh, you were flying?
Yeah.
So were you.
But I fell, hit the ground, and I assumed I would have had the suit stand up.
Well, you just never asked.
That's true, I never asked.
You have a fly speed.
So I can just fly from prone?
I would think so.
I don't see why not.
Makes sense to me.
But whose turn is it?
Is it my turn?
It's my turn.
It's my turn.
So I'm going to...
He's working on positioning.
Position.
I am going to... You's working on positioning. Position. I am going to...
You ready for this, Grant?
I'm going to take a five-foot step and attack you twice.
All right.
Same thing.
I don't want to put on power.
I want to do that damage, but you got that bonus to AC there.
Troy, it's only worked out well for you.
Whatever you do. Yeah, you you're right you're not wrong
But
Yeah it's not that bad
Let's try it
I'm doing power attack I'm doing power attack Baron
It's not going to pay off
Minus 40 or AC
Miss on the first one
Joe is a little upset by this
This turn of events for those listening at home
that is going to be uh that's going to be a miss 27
he's prone i'm prone so that uh takes away the plus four bonus from my giant training so i have
a 28 28 so that's a miss jo, why can't you just be more like
Baron? If your character's
literally everything
I have and a gun.
This doesn't make
any fucking sense!
He does 90 plus
points of damage around
and cast Heels and Cell,
flies, and has a 28 AC.
I'm sorry, 32 AC. If he had rolled a 32 AC.
If he had rolled a 29 or higher, he would have hit me.
I literally put all my chips in.
I went all in against Baron.
But without Power Attack, you would have hit me that second time.
Yep.
See?
You take the good with the bad.
Baron, what do you got?
Welcome to the combat again.
Welcome back.
Thank you so much.
So can I just fly straight up?
Yes.
You would be moving through.
That provokes.
You want to fly at an angle away?
You know what?
If I'm going to provoke either way, I'm just going to take a full attack action from the ground at him.
All right.
So you're going to provoke from him.
Yep.
All right.
I got a lead power attack on.
Oh, 32.
That's a hit.
Okay.
Let's do a little damage here.
Okay.
There's one six in there.
39 points of damage. Brutal. I can't believe I did this. Remember, that's one six in there. Thirty-nine points of damage. Brutal.
I can't believe I did this. Thirty-nine.
Remember, that's triple damage on a crit.
Yep. First attack.
Oh, misfire. Oh, no!
Yeah, baby!
Holy shit!
Second attack. Oh, man. No!
Eighteen. Oh, thank God. I was like,
don't shoot it! You just made that gun!
We just made that gun! We can repair it, though. Oh, thank God. I was like, don't shoot it. You just made that gun. We just made that gun.
We can repair it, though.
We can repair it.
We can rebuild it.
Guns can be rebuilt.
29 points of damage.
29, okay.
Final attack is going to be a 13 against such AC.
Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
All right.
Oh, boy.
There we go.
30 points of damage
Alright still alive
Alright we need just some damage
Still alive
He's had a lot of rounds
To just feel good about himself
It is Feyraz's turn
Can you get through this
Without it getting to his turn
Did you hover Baron
He's on the ground
Oh yeah
When you're flying
He's not
It's up to you
It's up to you
Am I hovering Yeah yeah No you're prone oh yeah he's not to you am I
hovering yeah I know you're prone you
could but you can flag it you're prone
kid okay for Oz is gonna cast a geyser
geyser yeah I cause a column of boiling
water to spring forth from any
horizontal surface knocking creatures
over over creatures directly over it
exposing nearby creatures to searing
droplets as a spray but I'm just gonna
target your guy. That should hit
four bears, though, if there's splash to that.
It doesn't. It just goes up.
It just goes straight up and attacks?
Yeah, it's a five foot square. Okay.
So roll a reflex save.
I don't want to.
Can't be that good. Natural one.
Oh, yes.
Auto fail on the reflex.
Fail! So, first things first, you fail, so you take Oh, yes. Auto fail on the reflex. Fail.
So first things first, you fail.
So you take 3d6 points of fire damage from the boiling water.
Gross.
Very gross.
That's 10 points of fire damage.
Okay.
I don't like that.
And then you're flung straight up into the air.
So you said the ceiling was 20 feet tall.
20 feet high.
I remember this one.
So you take falling damage from falling down.
Watch this.
I take five more points of damage.
Wait, wait, wait.
Don't you take damage both ways?
He takes a fire damage and he takes...
Oh, he hits the ceiling, too.
Yeah, he hits the ceiling and takes 2d6.
Falls and takes 2d6.
Is that what it says?
Yeah, that's what we did last time.
Okay.
All right, takes another four points of damage.
Yeah, you fall adjacent to the geyser,
so you fall on the other side of it.
Okay, so I'm over here and I'm prone.
I'm like, now I'm ten feet away from four bears
and prone in this blue, sickly blue light.
Sickly blue light.
It's still alive, but he looks like he's in bad shape.
Pembroke.
Ferraza's gonna...
Can I have my fucking move action?
Take your move action.
Ferraza's gonna fly away.
Ferraza flies away.
Pems.
All right.
Pembroke is, as he stood, he pulls himself up on his cane,
and he points at him, and a tiny little orange ball of light
flies in his direction towards the corner where the sconce is
and explodes in a fireball.
Explodes with a fireball.
Beautiful. Reflex save. That with a fireball. Beautiful.
Reflex save? That is a DC 19 reflex half. Natural 20.
Okay. On the reflex save. Okay.
That's real disappointing. After a natural one.
It's a good thing. Take the good with the bad,
Troy.
So
that's 43 points of fire damage
half. 43 points of fire.
So 22, 21, 21 points of fire damage have. 43 points of fire. So 22, 21 points of fire damage.
All right.
Still going.
Beautiful.
Still going.
Okay.
Then I'm going to use a quickened spell to fire off a magic missile.
Okay.
Quickened.
Finish him.
Oh, you know what?
Actually, no.
I'm going to fire another fireball.
You can quicken a fireball?
Yeah, because it's anything second or third level spells, I can do a quicken
with the rod. Wow, but it uses up a spell
slot two spells higher? No, no, no.
That's with the rod.
Okay. Do you have
to have multiple fireballs prepared?
I do, but you do have to, right?
Yeah. Alright, so you fireball
him again. Yep.
He's dead.
Yay!
Okay, so that's 36 more points of fire damage. Call him again. Yep. He's dead. Yay! Okay.
So that's 36 more points.
And I failed my reflex save.
Oh, so it's really ugly. So you just obliterate him.
Burt jumps.
Are you rolling a natural 20 on the reflex save?
Yes.
I was going to say, being prone would have affected your reflex.
Yeah, it would have affected my reflex.
Oh, beautiful.
And that guy just goes up in a puff of smoke.
Leaving his equipment behind.
Leaving all of his magical equipment behind, yes.
All I can say is, thank God we had four bears.
How would you have made it through that combat without four bears?
I paid myself.
The only mistake I made was not cutting your ice open first.
You wouldn't have been able to get them out.
No.
That's true.
That's absolutely true.
We'd be dead.
Yeah.
I probably would be dead, too, just waiting for Pembroke if it took him four rounds or whatever to get out.
My AC is irrelevant.
Yeah.
So it just would have been like crash, crash, crash, 30 points a round.
Actually, I'm sorry, 30 points a hit. I mean, what Pepper could, in an emergency situation, what Pepper could have done is Dimensional stepped out of, like, 50 feet in the air outside of the building.
That's true.
Right, up into the sky and just landed.
On the roof.
Yeah.
On the roof of the Chapel of Urgothoa.
The question, though, is, if I may.
Please.
Should we all take a little peek behind the scenes to see how many hit points we have left?
Because I think you did better than you think you did.
I think I did pretty good with those nines every round.
Joe, what are you sitting at for HP?
I have 77 of 136.
Matthew?
27.
Out of?
101.
You were an ass chop.
And you had hit me again.
Oh, and I'm sorry.
And you did completely take away my false life spell, which was another 14 points of temporary
HP. Pembroke, what were you
sitting at? I'm at 33
out of 73. Wow. First
combat. Baron.
I'm at 32 out of 119. Wow!
You could have killed me if you had another full round attack.
I mean, you were all one
great axe crit on a power
attack was doing a minimum,
minimum, 81 points of damage on a great axe crit on a power attack was doing a minimum minimum 81 points of
damage. Oh man. On a great axe
crit. 81 would have
permanently killed any of you. Again
without that crit at the beginning that battle would have been
totally different. I don't think I'm as
OP as you think. I just hit a lot. No I
know. I give you a lot of guff but I mean the
frost giants. These are no joke. Finally
showed up had you not killed one of them. This is part of the fun
though Grant. No no no. It's not fun to sit around being like, I mean, that gunslinger is very balanced.
Nobody laughs at that.
That's true.
That's true.
Hell of a combat.
You are all weakened, bloodied, beat, and you know.
I think we have to just give up now.
Yeah.
That's it.
I think we have to throw in the towel.
You can have the world.
The world is yours!
The world is yours!
We're going to hide in a cave
in the frozen north.
You all have to know
that you were one crit away
from permadeath.
You see the damage
they can lay out.
You know,
obviously not mechanically,
but you can tell,
like, had that thing hit me
right in the wrong spot,
game over.
A long hallway
extending into darkness. A passageway north Game over. A long hallway extending into darkness.
A passageway north with doors.
A passageway west with doors.
This is the first room of who knows how large this tomb is.
Oh, yes, the door is leading out.
Which is the ones we're about to take.
We'll see you next week.
Oh!
Spoiler alert for next week's show.
They already gave away our whole plan.
Retreat.
Retreat and shave.
Go out to the wolves.
You were right.
They were unbeatable.
