Happy Friday, it is August 27th and you're listening to The Pour Over. We aim to keep
Christians informed on what's happening in the world while remaining focused on Christ.
Here's the quote of the day,
Discernment is not knowing the difference between right and wrong,
it is knowing the difference between right and almost right. Charles Spurgeon
Let's jump right in with some espresso shots.
So let's jump right in with some espresso shots.
At least 60 Afghans and 13 U.S. service members were killed by two suicide bombers and a gunman believed to be members of ISIS at the Kabul airport yesterday. In an emotional address,
President Biden told those responsible, quote, we will hunt you down and make you pay,
while also reiterating his commitment to completing the evacuation quickly.
The attacks have amplified the criticism of the already unpopular withdrawal.
A recent survey showed 68% of Americans, including 55% of Democrats,
think it was handled, quote, badly.
As of Wednesday, roughly 1,500 Americans were still in the country,
including 1,000 the State Department had not yet been able to contact.
In brighter news, Airbnb is offering temporary housing for
20,000 Afghan refugees free of charge. The promise of heaven does not remove the
pains of this world, but it gives us hope, strength, and peace during life's most difficult
seasons. Join us in praying for stability and peace in Afghanistan. Revelation 21.4,
He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no
more death or mourning or crying or pain for the old order of things has passed away.
In some ways, OnlyFans is similar to a lot of other social media platforms.
Creators post content. People who follow them see that content. But it has two major differences.
One, creators can put some or all of their posts behind a paywall.
Two, most of the content is explicit.
The company was founded in 2016 and exploded during the pandemic, now boasting 130 million users.
For any other company, those numbers would make raising money a cinch and warrant special treatment from vendors,
but their embrace of adult content has investors steering clear and banks blocking wire transfers. Motivated by their money troubles, OnlyFans
announced last week that they were banning explicit content only to reverse course on
Wednesday after, quote, assurances from their banking partners and social media backlash.
We live in a broken world that often glorifies sin, but followers of Christ are called to keep
ourselves, quote,
unstained from the world.
We cannot accomplish this through grit,
but by spending daily time with God,
learning to love what He loves.
James 1.27
Pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is this,
to look after orphans and widows in their distress
and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
Delta Airlines has put a price on being unvaccinated.
In a public memo, Delta Airlines' CEO announced the company would be charging unvaccinated employees on the company's healthcare plan an extra $200 per month in order to offset the cost
of COVID-19 hospital stays, which average $40,000. He also referred to the Delta variant of COVID-19 hospital stays, which averaged $40,000. He also referred to the Delta variant
of COVID as B16172. We can't blame him. While B16172 Airlines is first to charge
unvaccinated employees money, their competitors, United Airlines and Air Canada, recently announced
vaccine mandates, promising to fire noncompliant staff unless they have medical or religious
exception.
Meanwhile, we're no closer to knowing COVID's origin story.
After a 90-day investigation, the intelligence community presented President Biden with an inconclusive final report.
In other brews, here's a rapid round of updates.
The future is now.
Waymo, Google's self-driving car sister company, has started offering driverless rides in San Francisco. They hope to open a fully automated robo-taxi service to the public
in three years, later than previously predicted. Nirvana's famous Nevermind album cover,
displaying a naked baby swimming in a pool, is coming under fire. The baby, Spencer Eldon,
is now 30 years old and suing the band
for child pornography violation, alleging his parents never signed a release for the punk band
to use the photo. Ye is now official. Kanye West has legally filed to change his name to his
longtime nickname Ye, with no other first name or surname, citing, quote, personal reasons. The
hip-hop star is expected to release his heavily anticipated and heavily delayed album Donda later today.
Newly instated, New York Governor Kathy Hochul raised the state's official COVID death total
by 12,000, dealing another blow to former Governor Cuomo's legacy. The number of cases
nationwide appears to be leveling off around 150,000 a day.
Thanks so much for listening to The Pour Over. Have a great day, and we'll see you on Monday.
