Today, we're talking about the federal debt ceiling, arrests in the Dadeville birthday
party shooting, a catastrophic rocket launch for SpaceX, and other top news for Friday,
April 21st.
Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over.
Here's the quote of the day.
It is not the trials in your life that develop or destroy you, but rather your response to
those hardships.
Charles Stanley. Let's get started with some espresso shots.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy unveiled his opening budget offer as the U.S. faces a potential default
this summer. The Limit Save Grow Act would increase the federal debt limit by $1.5 trillion or until March 2024, whichever comes first.
Additionally, it would cancel President Biden's student loan forgiveness program, rescind new funding for the IRS, and enact work requirements for federal aid programs, among other provisions.
The spending cuts would reportedly save $4.5 trillion.
provisions. The spending cuts would reportedly save $4.5 trillion. McCarthy said in order to spend more, Washington will have to come together and find savings elsewhere, just like every
household in America. President Biden said the plan shows the MAGA economic agenda, spending
cuts for working and middle-class folks. It's unclear if the bill can pass the House, but it's
predicted to swiftly be killed in the Democrat-controlled Senate.
The Bible calls followers of Christ to love everyone, from our neighbors to our enemies.
Yes, this includes people we disagree with politically and people we're negotiating against.
Philippians chapter 2, verses 3 through 4 say,
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves.
Everyone should look not to his own interests, but rather to the interests of others.
Some Starships Weren't Meant to Fly
SpaceX launched the most powerful rocket ever built yesterday morning. The rocket, called Starship, flew for four minutes before experiencing what SpaceX called a rapid unscheduled disassembly.
It exploded.
This was an experimental launch with no crew or payload, and SpaceX staff popped champagne simply to celebrate a successful liftoff.
Musk tweeted that they learned a lot for next test launch in a few months.
SpaceX has secured a $3 billion contract from NASA to use Starship as a crewed lunar lander,
and hopes it'll be the first rocket to take people to Mars.
Meanwhile, Tesla, another Musk company, also experienced some rapid disassembly.
The EV maker's stock dropped 10% yesterday after announcing a more
than 20% dip in net earnings, a consequence of more competitive EV pricing. Here's a verse to
consider whether you're building rockets or writing emails. Whatever you do, work at it with all your
heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive
an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Colossians 3, verses 23-24
A Sweet Sixteen party in Dadeville, Alabama last weekend ended in tragedy.
Shooting broke out at the dance studio venue, leaving four partygoers dead,
including the birthday girl's older brother and another 32 injured. 15 of the injured were
teenagers with gunshot wounds. Five individuals, two brothers ages 16 and 17, a 19-year-old and
two 20-year-olds, have been arrested and each charged with four counts of reckless murder,
which carries a sentence of 10 to 99 years in prison.
All five suspects will be tried as adults.
A motive or catalyst for the shooting hasn't been released.
Local authorities say the investigation is just at the tip of the iceberg
as they await more information, and possibly more charges,
as the four of the injured are still in critical condition.
The promise of heaven does not remove the pains of this world,
but it does give us hope, strength, and peace during life's most difficult seasons.
Join us in praying for hope, strength, and peace for the loved ones of the victims and the suspects.
Isaiah chapter 41 verse 10 says,
Do not fear, for I am with you. Do not be afraid, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you.
I will help you.
I will hold on to you with my righteous right hand.
