Today, we're talking about developments in Washington, D.C., slow economic growth, the
Disney vs. DeSantis tussle, and other top news for Friday, April 28th.
Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with a pour-over.
Here's the quote of the day.
The will of God is not something you add to your life.
It's a course you choose.
You either line yourself up with the Son of God,
or you capitulate to the principle which governs the rest of the world. Elizabeth Elliot.
Let's get started with some espresso shots.
The Supreme Court is united on at least one issue. Their current ethical guidelines are sufficient.
In a response to a bipartisan call for the Supremes to adopt a formal code of conduct,
Chief Justice Roberts declined a Senate invitation to testify,
but issued a statement on ethics, principles, and practices, signed by all nine judges.
The scrutiny comes after reports that Justice Gorsuch sold property to the head of a law firm with business before the court. And Justice Thomas has faced criticism for failing to disclose lavish trips with personal friend and GOP donor Harlan
Crowe. On the other side of the hill, House Republicans narrowly passed a spending bill
to raise the debt limit and slash spending. But it's DOA in the Democratic-controlled Senate,
leaving the debt crisis percolating in the background.
The confidence that our eternity is secure regardless of what happens
should color our every interaction.
It allows us to be loving when others are hateful,
be kind when others are angry,
and feel peace when others are fearful.
Psalm, chapter 75, verse 7 says,
For God is the judge, he brings down one and exalts another.
For God is the judge, he brings down one and exalts another.
Uncle Sam came in a little light at his quarterly economic weigh-in.
The latest report shows that gross domestic product, or GDP,
the measure of the value of the country's goods and services,
from corn to concerts to cars,
grew at just 1.1%, down from 2.4% last quarter.
If you're looking for some goats to scape, economists are pointing at inflation,
rising interest rates, and recent banking turmoil. Meanwhile, some companies checking their own scales. Metastock jumped 15% after announcing its ad revenue is growing again.
jumped 15% after announcing its ad revenue is growing again.
Amazon stock jumped 8% after beating revenue expectations in its cloud and advertising businesses.
McDonald's and PepsiCo stock both jumped
as they reported customers stomaching recent price hikes well.
And Snap shares plunged 20% after missing revenue expectations
and providing a rough Q2 outlook.
Our hope is never contingent on economic growth or good earnings reports. Thank you. Verse 1 says, God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
It's a litigious world after all.
Disney has filed a lawsuit against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, the latest development in their feud.
Last year, Disney publicly condemned DeSantis' parental rights in education bill, dubbed Don't Say Gay, by critics.
Then, DeSantis signed a bill removing Disney's independent district status
and appointing a new board to oversee municipal services on Disney's land.
Before the new board took their seats,
the outgoing board voted to strip itself of its powers.
Wednesday, the new board voided the outgoing board's deal,
prompting Disney to file a lawsuit.
The suit seeks to overturn the governor's takeover of the district, which they called a targeted campaign of government retaliation, punishing them for voicing an opinion.
The ride appears far from over. DeSantis has already vowed additional measures.
Whether you're proudly wearing your Mickey ears or ready to throw them in the trash,
Jesus calls us to love everyone all the time.
Ask him for the grace to do just that.
Colossians chapter 3 verse 14 says,
And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

We believe that the news can actually be a force for good,
helping people find rest and comfort in Christ while spurring them on to loving action,
instead of, you know, creating division, anger, and a persistent feeling of impending doom.
For example, keep this in mind while reading today's news.

updates. Last night kicked off the 2023 NFL Draft. With the first pick of the draft, the Carolina
Panthers selected QB Bryce Young, the first Alabama player to get selected first overall in the modern draft era.
QBs went back-to-back when the Houston Texans selected Ohio State's C.J. Stroud.

The Montana State House of Representatives voted Wednesday to censure Zoe Zephyr,
Montana's first transgender legislator, for saying that conservative lawmakers would have blood on their hands if they passed a ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth.
The censure means Zephyr is barred from the House floor for the rest of the legislative session,
but can vote remotely. Ukrainian President Zelensky and Chinese President Xi
spoke by phone Wednesday for the first time since Russia's invasion.
In what Zelensky deemed a long, meaningful conversation,
China committed to sending a special representative to Ukraine
and other countries to host discussions on resolving the crisis,
and Ukraine committed to sending an ambassador to China.
For the first time ever, Pope Francis will allow women to vote at a bishop's meeting.
In what advocates have called a significant crack in the stained glass ceiling,
five religious sisters will be chosen to participate in the October event.
Additionally, 70 hand-picked non-clerical participants,
including women and young people, will be allowed to vote.
Jerry Springer, age 79, died peacefully at his home yesterday after a brief illness.
Born in London, England, Springer served one term as mayor of Cincinnati before launching his raucous daytime talk show defined by family brawls and obscenities.
The Jerry Springer Show ran for 27 years,
at one point topping Oprah in viewership. That's all we have for today. Thanks so much
