Today, we're talking about the U.S. debt ceiling, Alec Baldwin's manslaughter charge,
a dismal business update, and other top news for Friday, January 20th.
Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over.
Here's the quote of the day.
The simple step of a courageous individual is not to take part in the lie,
one word of truth outweighs the world.
Alexander Solzhenitsyn.
Let's get started with some espresso
shots. Yesterday, Uncle Sam maxed out his credit card. In explain it like I'm five terms, the U.S.
spends more money than it makes, so it borrows money to pay the bills. Congress set the IOU
limit to $31.4 trillion, which was met yesterday. Now, the Treasury Department must
use extraordinary measures to avoid default. Those measures include moving money between
agencies to pay bills as they become due, suspending some ongoing investments like
retired postal workers' health plans, and checking White House couch cushions for coins, maybe.
Treasury Secretary Yellen says these maneuvers
should last until June-ish, but the only lasting solution is for Congress to raise or suspend the
debt limit. And there's a stalemate. Some House Republicans are demanding spending cuts be agreed
to first, but the White House says there's no negotiating over the debt ceiling. Jesus showed
compassion when people expected rejection,
gentleness when people expected anger,
and love when people expected hate.
Whether you're discussing debt ceilings in D.C.
or something more mundane,
be imitators of Christ.
1 Corinthians 16, verse 14 says,
do everything in love.
Actor Alec Baldwin will be criminally charged by New Mexico prosecutors for the fatal shooting of cinematographer Helena Hutchins on the set of the film Rust. Baldwin and the movie's
armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, each will be charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter.
If found guilty of all charges, they could face up to five years in prison.
manslaughter. If found guilty of all charges, they could face up to five years in prison.
Baldwin accidentally shot and killed Hutchins on October 21st, 2021, when a gun filled with live bullets instead of blanks was discharged during a rehearsal. The movie's director,
Joel Sousa, was also injured by the bullet, but later recovered. Baldwin said he didn't
pull the trigger, but an FBI forensic report said that the gun could not have been fired
without the trigger being pulled.
The promise of heaven does not remove the pains of this world,
but it does give us hope, strength, and peace during tragedies.
Join us in praying for hope, strength, and peace for everyone involved,
including the families of Helena Hutchins, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, and Alec Baldwin.
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes.
Death will be no more. Grief, their eyes. Death will be no more.
Grief, crying, and pain will be no more.
Because the previous things have passed away.
Revelation 21.4 Microsoft announced it's laying off 10,000 employees.
The latest weight loss news from the tech sector.
The move will cut $2.5 billion in costs over 12
months while reducing the headcount by 5%. Microsoft's cuts mimic Alphabet, Amazon,
and Salesforce, all of which shed significant employee poundage recently.
Separately, Amazon's smile is frowning. The tech giant is ending the program that gave a portion
of shoppers spending to the charity of their choice, saying donations were spread too thin. They're focusing charitable efforts with the goal of
make meaningful change. Similarly, no party hat emoji for Party City, which announced its filing
for bankruptcy in response to growing competition, increased costs, and $1.67 billion in debt.
Crypto leader Genesis is also expected to file bankruptcy this week as FTX's collapse
continues its unhappy ripple effect. Our hope is never contingent on an economic outcome.
It's much more secure than that. Regardless of whether things get worse or better during your
lifetime, everything eventually ends well for followers of Christ. Blessed be the God and
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of his great mercy,
he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from
the dead and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading,
kept in heaven for you. 1 Peter chapter 1 verses 3 through 4.

Sister André, the world's oldest person, passed away at 118 years old on Tuesday in southern France.
Before becoming a nun, she looked after children during World War II and spent 28 years in a hospital caring for orphans and the elderly.
