Today, we're talking about gun law negotiations in D.C., a controversial new sporting event,
another $1 billion lawsuit against the FBI, and other top news for Friday, June 10th.
Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over.
Here's the quote of the day.
Our work is great.
Our time is short.
The consequences of our labors are infinite.
John Newton.
Let's start with some espresso shots.
our labors are infinite. John Newton. Let's start with some espresso shots.
There's a lot of gun talk happening in D.C. An 11-year-old from Uvalde appeared before a House committee via pre-recorded video to share her story of surviving last month's shooting by
smearing a classmate's blood on herself and feigning death. Actor Matthew McConaughey,
another Uvalde native, spoke from the White House, urging Congress to pass what he dubbed gun responsibility laws protecting both people
and the Second Amendment. Congress is moving, but nothing is concrete yet. The House passed
a package of gun law bills largely along party lines that has little hope of surviving the Senate.
Meanwhile, a bipartisan group of senators is negotiating a compromise bill that would focus
on background checks, school safety, new mental health programs, and incentivizing states to pass red flag laws.
Both sides seem optimistic it could pass. Jesus showed love and compassion when people
expected rejection, gentleness when people expected anger, and love when people expected
hate. Whether you're negotiating gun laws or simply discussing them at dinner, be imitators
of Christ. James 3.17 says,
By the wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving, gentle, open to reason,
full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without pretense.
The LIV Golf Invitational Series teed off in London yesterday, sparking some headlines that
feel a bit more like TMZ than ESPN.
LIV is an upstart competitor to the PGA Tour that has poached a few top players with promises of massive, guaranteed money. Dustin Johnson, ranked 13th in the world, is reportedly getting paid
$125 million. That's $50 million more than his lifetime PGA Tour earnings. Just for showing up,
Phil Mickelson is getting paid $200 million. But money isn't scandalous. The controversy is over who is cutting the checks.
LIV was created by the Saudi Arabian government and is seen as a sports-washing effort by the
regime to distract from their human rights violations. The PGA Tour wants nothing to
do with it and yesterday suspended all 17 members who teed off at the inaugural LIV tourney.
members who teed off at the inaugural LIV tourney. Roughly 90 women, including gold medalists Simone Biles, Ali Raisman, and Michaela Maroney, have filed a $1 billion suit against the FBI for
mishandling of allegations against Larry Nassar. The athletes claim the FBI failed to act after
the USA Gymnastics first reported Nassar's sexual abuse in 2015. By the time the Bureau took
any action contributing to his arrest in 2016, 70 additional women and girls had been assaulted.
The suit comes after the DOJ's third refusal to prosecute the two FBI agents responsible for the
alleged botched case. Nassar's hundreds of victims have already stuck the landing on lawsuits with
two other institutions that failed to stop Nassar's abuse. Michigan State University agreed to pay out $500 million
and the U.S. Gymnastics agreed to pay out $380 million. We live in a world marred by sin. Even
while we work to promote accountability and redemption here on earth, we can rest in the
knowledge that the day is coming where sin will be impossible and regret a distant memory. Revelation 21.4 says, He will wipe away every tear from their eyes.
Death will be no more. Grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things
have passed away. If you need help, call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-4673.

This podcast is brought to you by the Christian Standard Bible. Broadly speaking, there are two
approaches to translating the Bible, translating words versus translating phrases. The result is over 450
different English translations and 2 Kings 4.29 reading, gird up your loins, don't lose a minute,
and everything in between. The Christian Standard Bible was translated using optimal equivalence
pursuing both linguistic precision and readability. That means you're reading the same word spoken in
30 AD, except when word-for-word translation breaks
the English language. So quit procrastinating, gird up your loins, and check out all the CSB
has to offer. Check out the link in the show notes. In other brews, here's a rapid round of updates.
Last night, the January 6th House Committee held the first of six public hearings,
presenting fresh evidence and firsthand testimony aimed at showing that January 6th was a coordinated attack on democracy with support from the Trump administration.
Critics, mostly Republicans, have dismissed the investigation as politically motivated.
Twitter agreed to give Elon Musk a data download, not just on bots, on everything.
Twitter agreed to give Elon Musk a data download, not just on bots, on everything.
After Musk's repeated requests for additional information,
Twitter is dumping over the whole Lego bucket saying he can have access to the fire hose of 500 million daily tweets to look for data himself.
A man was arrested on charges of attempted murder near the home of the SCOTUS justice,
Brett Kavanaugh, on Wednesday.
Apparently upset over the looming SCOTUS decision on abortion rights, the California man reportedly called 911 on himself, claiming to
be armed, suicidal, and ready to kill a Supreme Court justice. The Denver Broncos have agreed to
be sold to a group led by a Walmart heir, Robert Walton, for $4.65 billion, a record price for a
North American sports team. Pat Bolin, the previous
owner who passed away in 2019, bought the team for $78 million back in 1984. You're not just
thirstier than normal. Gatorade bottles now hold 28 ounces instead of 32 ounces. It's just one
example of shrinkflation, decreasing amount of product while keeping price the same. Kleenex, Folgers, Chobani, Fritos, restaurants, and many other companies are following suit,
guessing consumers would rather have less than pay more.
