Starting point is 00:00:37 Wednesday night, the House voted 314 to 117 to pass the Fiscal Responsibility Act, which would raise the debt ceiling into 2025. It received support from the middle out, winning over 149 Republicans and 165 Democrats while earning nay votes from both most conservative and the most progressive representatives. In addition to raising the roof, the bill would, one, keep non-defense spending flat in 2024 and up 1% in 2025. 2. Expand some work requirements for federal aid programs. 3. Rescind $27 billion in unspent COVID aid. And 4. Reinstate student debt payments on August 30th. The bill now heads to the Senate, where Majority Leader Schumer and Minority Leader McConnell have both said they want to pass it without delay, ahead of the Treasury Department's Monday deadline.

Starting point is 00:03:38 On the GOP side of things, eight candidates have already announced 2024 bids, and three more announcements are expected next week. Former VP Mike Pence, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, and current North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, who hopes to make up for a lack of name recognition with a $1.5 billion net worth. Former President Trump currently leads the herd. For Democrats, the current ballot looks slightly less like a CVS receipt. Current President Biden's re-election has two challengers at the moment, Marianne Williamson and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. We've got months of fun ahead. The first Republican primary is scheduled for January in Iowa, while the first Democratic primary will be in South Carolina in February.

Amazon is shipping out $30 million to the Federal Trade Commission, settling two separate allegations of privacy violations without admitting any wrongdoing. Meta is threatening to pull news links from Facebook and Instagram in California if state lawmakers pass a bill taxing them for news content, which the state would then allocate to California newsrooms. It's déjà vu for Facebook,
