Today we're talking about the Russian ruble's big year, a devastating earthquake, a vote on guns,
and other top news for Friday, June 24th. Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with
The Pour Over. Here's the quote of the day. Of all things guard against neglecting God in the
secret place of prayer. William Wilberforce. Let's start with some espresso shots.
In a bid for comeback of the year, the Russian ruble reached its highest value in seven years.
The currency plunged to extreme lows in March following worldwide sanctions against Russia.
Since then, the ruble has rebounded and then some. It is now up 39% from the start of the year.
The turnaround is fueled by Russia demanding European customers' energy payments in rubles and
the EU purchasing $60 billion worth of Russian energy in the last 100 days despite embargoes.
Despite the inflow of cash, Russia will be forced to find a solution to their invasion soon thanks
to dwindling troops and supplies, according to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. In a response
to European energy embargoes, Russia has slashed energy flowing into the EU, plunging some countries into supply crisis. While you likely have no control over
what's happening in Russia or Ukraine, you can control how you speak about it. Leave others with
no doubt of your love for everyone involved, even for people whose actions you do not support.
Luke 6, verse 32 through 35 says, If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?
Even sinners love those who love them.
But love your enemies, do what is good, and lend, expecting nothing in return.
Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High.
At least 1,000 people were killed and another 1,500 injured
in a 5.9 magnitude earthquake in eastern Afghanistan Wednesday.
In one district, the quake destroyed or damaged nearly 70% of all homes.
The disaster will likely test the cash-strapped Taliban's regime administrative capabilities as the full extent of damage emerges.
The earthquake is just the latest tragedy to hit Afghanistan since Uncle Sam's shaky departure last summer.
Since then, Afghanistan has struggled with widespread hunger, severe drought, terrorist
attacks by the Islamic State, and economic crisis. One encouraging note, since the Taliban's rule
isn't internationally recognized, aid for areas hit by the earthquake is bypassing authorities
and being distributed directly to the public. the UN already has teams and medical supplies on the ground.
The promise of heaven does not remove the pains of this world,
but it does give us hope, strength, and peace during life's most difficult seasons.
Join us in praying for Afghanistan, for families, for first responders, and for their leaders.
Job 12 verse 10 says,
The life of every living thing is in his hand, as well as the breath of all humanity.
Sermons are great. We love Christian books. And of course, watching interpretive dances
of Christian history is our favorite pastime. But there's no substitute for actually reading
the Bible. Just one problem. There are literally hundreds of different English translations of the
Bible. Our favorite translation is the one you actually read, and for us, that's the CSB.
The Christian Standard Bible is the product of over 100 biblically-minded scholars from 17
denominations dedicating years to translate God's Word. It's both trustworthy and understandable.

Gas tax holiday, that is.
President Biden requested Congress pause the 18-cent-gallon federal tax on gasoline
for three months to provide some relief at the pump.
But lawmakers from both parties say it'll provide minuscule relief

meaning the popular vape company must stop selling and distributing its products immediately.
This follows a 2020 ban on Juul's mint and fruit-flavored products that were popular amongst teens. With the number one pick in the 2022 NBA draft, the Orlando Magic selected Paulo Benchero. At 6'10",
