Today we're discussing details of the Uvalde shooting, the ensuing national debate on guns,
a new streaming platform by a major sports league, and other top news for Friday, May 27th.
Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over. Here's the quote of the day.
The church changes the world not by making converts, but by making disciples. John Wesley.
Details continue to emerge surrounding the Texas school shooting,
which left 19 children, two teachers, and the shooter dead and 17 others injured.
The 18-year-old shooter had no criminal history or documented mental health struggles before the attack, although his classmates said he had been exhibiting threatening behavior. Tuesday morning,
he shot his grandmother with a rifle he purchased last week, stole her truck, and crashed it outside Robb Elementary School.
He fired upon and injured two arriving officers before barricading himself inside a fourth-grade classroom, where he continued shooting.
Approximately 40 minutes passed before a responding Border Patrol officer shot and killed him.
The shooter sent messages narrating the events leading to the attack to an online acquaintance in Germany, but authorities are still unsure of a specific motive.
It was previously misreported that Ramos' grandmother had been killed,
but she is still in the hospital.
Times of difficulty are also times of opportunity,
and you can check out a GoFundMe page of verified fundraisers to help victims' families.
We've got a link in the show notes.
You can send in a screenshot of any contribution,
and we'll match the first $1,000 given by readers.
Regardless of your ability to give, take a moment to stop and pray. We've promised that prayer is
powerful and effective. James 516 says, the prayer of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect.
America has a unique relationship with guns. They are common and contentious. At a press conference about the Uvalde shooting, Democrat Beto O'Rourke interrupted Republican Texas
Governor Abbott, who he's running against in November's gubernatorial race, to say,
quote, this is on you until you choose to do something different. He was met with both cheers
and booing. Things are so contentious in D.C. that the agency responsible for firearms has
been without a Senate-confirmed director for seven years. In general, Democrats, including President Biden, want to expand background checks and ban
assault-style weapons, while Republicans say the details of actual mass shootings show that these
proposals would not make a difference, and they advocate for hardening school security. Both sides
see potential in, quote, red flag laws. When debating how to reduce gun violence, remember
that being peaceable, gentle, and open to reason is a sign of God's wisdom in us.
James 3.17 says,
But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without pretense.
The NFL is reportedly planning a launch of its own streaming service called, you guessed it, NFL Plus.
Though it's not Sunday Ticket, the service would provide fans access to live games, radio, podcasts, and, quote, miscellaneous team-created content on any device, and it's expected to cost $5 a month.
Not included is a live stream of former Las Vegas Raiders coach John Gruden's wrongful termination lawsuit.
Raiders coach John Gruden's wrongful termination lawsuit. A judge denied a motion by the NFL to move litigation into private arbitration, which means the high-profile case will move forward
in the public eye, something the league had hoped to avoid. Meanwhile, the NBA announced
it's expanding the league for the first time in 20 years. Two new teams based out of Las Vegas
and Seattle will hit the courts starting in 2024. Too often we let eternally insignificant things
like sports control our mood and behavior.
While it's not wrong to enjoy these things, remember that whether your team wins or loses,
nothing of true importance has changed.
Colossians 3, 2, and 3 says,
Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things.
For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

In other brews, here's a rapid round of updates.
An investigative report released Wednesday blames UK's Prime Minister Boris Johnson for
the government's boozy parties during COVID lockdowns, when citizens were prohibited from
socializing or even visiting sick relatives. The British PM says he takes, quote,
full responsibility for the, uh, Irish tea parties, but doesn't plan on resigning.
This week is the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, a conference with the world's
financial elite and $50 burritos. This year feels different. Inflation and supply chain issues have
dominated the talks and fouled the mood, and many big players, including leadership from China,
India, and the U.S., opted out. Elon Musk reiterated his commitment to buying Twitter,
and he pledged to personally finance $33.5 billion of the $44 billion sale. The little
bluebird now comes with a side of legal action. Twitter was fined $150 million on Wednesday for illegally using people's data. Just when you think Pete Davidson can't show
up anywhere else, he's made the Times 100 most influential people list, along with Vladimir
Putin, Oprah, Volodymyr Zelensky, Mary J. Blige, Joe Rogan, and 94 others. You can check out the
