Vaccine updates, Brian Laundrie's body found, truth social, and other top news for Friday,
October 22nd. Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over.
Here's the quote of the day.
Let's jump right in with some espresso shots.
The U.S. government is preparing to roll out COVID vaccines for children,
pending a green light from the government's alphabet soup, the CDC and FDA.
Pfizer says clinic studies show giving 5- to 11-year-olds doses one-third the size of
adult doses produces a robust immune system response, but critics say they're not necessary
given that children rarely get severe cases of COVID. Kids' doses will be distributed to
doctors' offices, health clinics, and schools. Cue a lively discussion at school board meetings.
In booster news, the CDC affirmed the FDA's
approval for their distribution. Here's who's now eligible. High-risk members of the Moderna
and Pfizer families six months after their second dose, and everyone who got the J&J vaccine two
months after their first dose. Christians need to remember their first response must be extending love, even to their enemies.
Matthew 5, 44-45 says,
But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
so that you may be children of your Father in heaven.
For he causes the sun to rise on the evil and the good,
and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
A month after Gabby Petito's remains were found in Wyoming,
the search for her fiancé Brian Laundrie, the only person of interest in her strangulation,
is over. Items belonging to Laundrie and human remains were found inside a Florida nature reserve this week. Authorities have been searching Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park since
Laundrie went missing and found the remains of five other missing persons, but it was Laundrie's parents,
on their first visit to the park to aid efforts, who stumbled across his personal items.
The remains were found in an area that was recently underwater and might have been there
for a while. They were confirmed to be Brian Laundrie's last night. Confession, I had to
look up the pronunciation of Myakkahatchee and I'm still not sure if I'm pronouncing it right.
Former President Trump is getting back on the grid. Wednesday night, he announced Trump Media
and Technology Group, or TMTG, is launching a new social media network called Truth Social
to, quote, stand up to the tyranny of big tech, unquote. Truth Social will be coming to an app
store near you early next year, giving it time to beef up security. The beta version was hacked.
Reactions have been predictably divided, but investors are apparently optimistic.
After it was announced TMTG would merge with a SPAC, the SPAC's stock jumped 145%. It's not just that SPAC popping champagne. Bitcoin hit a record high
$66,909 Wednesday morning, and Pinterest stock jumped 13% on news that PayPal was
Pinterested in acquiring the platform for nearly $40 billion.
While there's nothing inherently wrong with owning cryptocurrency or volatile stock,
we should be wary of the often obsessive tendencies they bring out in people.
Seek to steward your money well over the long term, not bet on a big windfall.
Proverbs 13.11 says,
Wealth obtained by fraud will dwindle, but whoever earns it through labor will multiply it.
In other brews, it's time for a rapid round of updates.
The leader of the Haitian gang 400 Mowozo has threatened to kill all 17 hostages,
including five children, if they are not paid $1 million per hostage. The 16 Americans and
one Canadian were kidnapped on Saturday while they returned from an orphanage.
They are in the country as missionaries. A pig kidney functioned for three days after being transplanted into a human,
declared brain dead, marking the first successful pig-to-human transfer. Some hail this as the
potential solution to the organ shortage. 107,000 Americans are waiting for life-saving organ transplants, while others are raising ethical concerns.
According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection's unpublished data, the Border Patrol apprehended more than 1.7 million migrants during the fiscal year that ended last month, marking the highest number of border arrests ever.
of border arrests ever.
Nicholas Cruz pleaded guilty to murdering 17 people at his high school in Parkland, Florida in February 2018.
With his full confession, the trial jumps straight to the sentencing phase
where a jury will decide whether he receives the death penalty
or back-to-back life sentences.
Concerns are growing within the Biden administration
over China's new hypersonic missile technology.
The missiles were tested in July and August and reportedly have the capacity to carry nuclear warheads at a velocity four times the speed of sound, evading U.S. missile defenses.
A cheery thought.
Taking a cue from the artist formerly known as Kanye West, now just Ye, Facebook is planning
on changing its name, sorta. The social network will remain Facebook.com, but the parent company
of Instagram, WhatsApp, and Oculus will rebrand. Guests on the new name include Virtuel,
Metaland, and, it's a long shot, but, Zuckers.
