Today, we're talking about shakeups in the midterms, gloomy tech updates, continued protests
in Iran, and other top news for Friday, October 28th.
Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over.
Here's the quote of the day.
You don't think your way into a new kind of living.
You live your way into a new kind of thinking.
Henry Nowen.
Let's start with some espresso shots. Elections are coming, whether
you want them or not. In Pennsylvania, Senate candidates John Fetterman and Mehmet Oz faced
off in a debate that highlighted Fetterman's struggles to answer questions articulately as
a result of his May stroke, prompting concerns about his fitness from within his own party.
Other Democrats are standing by Fetterman saying Dr. Oz's statement that abortion decisions should
include local political leaders is a non-starter for them. In Georgia, pro-life Senate candidate
Herschel Walker was accused by a second unnamed woman of paying for her to get an abortion during
their six-year extramarital affair. Walker has called the accusations lies.
His opponent, Raphael Warnock,
is navigating his own set of personal life allegations,
including that he ran over his ex-wife's foot during a domestic dispute.
Both races are neck and neck.
Whether you get invested in political outcomes or not,
it's important to remember that our political affiliations
should never supersede our allegiance to Jesus.
Our hope is never contingent on an election outcome. It's much more secure than that.
Daniel 4, verse 32 says, The Most High is ruler over human kingdoms.
This week's bad Q3 earnings reports and gloomy short-term outlooks have big tech looking fondly back at
the good old days of 2020. Meta, formerly Facebook, stock dropped 24% yesterday,
its lowest since 2016. Alphabet, formerly Google, stock fell 11%. Amazon, always called Amazon,
stock slid 15%. Trading of Twitter stock will be suspended today as it's elon musk's deadline for ponying up 44
billion dollars to take the company private while no official announcement has been made musk is
acting like the deal is done yesterday he tweeted a statement addressed to twitter advertisers
saying he acquired the company to help humanity and would not let it become a free-for-all
hellscape today he's scheduled to meet with the entire staff,
which may get awkward. He proposed laying off 75% of them.
Our goal is to keep the big things big and the small things small. It's not that Elon's purchase
of Twitter is of no importance. It's just not God of the universe important. Stay focused on
eternity. It changes everything. Colossians 3 verse 2 through 4 says,
Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things. For you died and your life is hidden
with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you will also appear with him in
glory. Thousands of Iranians gathered at the grave of Massa Amini this week. They encountered
police using tear gas and bullets
on the crowd. Monday marked 40 days since Amini's death in police custody following her arrest for
wearing a hijab improperly. The 40th day of mourning is culturally significant and brought
a fresh wave of anti-regime demonstrations, including women burning hijabs and cutting
their hair in defiance of Sharia law ordinances. The crackdown on
protesters has repeatedly turned violent, with children among the casualties, prompting a fresh
round of sanctions from the U.S. against Iran. The White House is also reporting signs that Iran is
becoming increasingly chummy with Russia. Russia has reportedly been advising Iran on how to squash
protests, while Iran has reportedly been funneling military supplies to
Russia. Christians must balance both conviction and compassion. Fighting for what we believe is
right while continuing to love and care for those we work against. Do not allow love for one group
to justify hate for another. 1 Peter chapter 4 verse 8 says, Above all, maintain constant love
for one another, since love covers a multitude of sins.

In other brews, here's a rapid round of updates.
The U.S. economy is impersonating a Sour Patch Kid. Sour, the average mortgage rate,
topped 7% for the first time since 2001, significantly slowing the housing market.
Sweet, the economy grew at a 2.6 annualized rate,
beating expectations of 2.3% and ending a two-quarter losing streak.
A Waukesha, Wisconsin jury convicted 40-year-old Daryl Brooks Jr., who drove a SUV through a Christmas parade. Of all 76 charges brought against him, including six counts of first-degree
homicide, which each carry a mandatory life sentence.
Brooks represented himself in the viral trial after firing his public defenders and withdrawing an initial insanity plea.
The 118th edition of the World Series begins tonight with the Houston Astros hosting the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 1.
Wall Street will be watching with trepidation as Philly World Series victory has historically preceded financial turmoil.
Thankfully, the economy showed up pre-turmoiled this time.
Russia conducted its first nuclear drill since the invasion of Ukraine. The Russian defense
minister claimed that the drill served as a practice for a massive nuclear strike in
retaliation for an enemy's nuclear strike. The U.S. was notified of the drill served as a practice for a massive nuclear strike in retaliation for an enemy's
nuclear strike. The U.S. was notified of the drill straight from Moscow under the New Start Arms
Treaty. Rihanna fans are seeing diamonds after the musician-turned-billionaire businesswoman
announced her first new song in six years. The song Lift Me Up will be the lead soundtrack
single for Marvel's Black Panther Wakanda Forever, released next month.
Rihanna will also headline the Super Bowl halftime show this February.
And now it's time for TPO's Pick of the Week, Wandering Toward God.
Is it wrong to doubt?
Many assume that doubt is faith's opposite and that wandering among the hard questions
of faith will lead us further and further away from God.
Professor and philosopher Travis Dickinson disagrees.
Instead, he says, our doubts and hard questions about the faith
are actually an important way we can express our commitment and love to God.
Doubt isn't our destination, but it's an important step on the way
and often leads to us discovering the truth, goodness, and beauty of God waiting for us.
Check out this awesome book tackling many believers' biggest hurdle, Doubting God.
