Happy Friday! It's September 10th and you're listening to The Pour-Over.
We aim to keep Christians informed on what's happening in the world while staying focused on Christ.
Here's the quote of the day.
All great and honorable actions are accompanied with great difficulties,
and both must be enterprised and overcome with answerable courage.
William Bradford
Let's get started with some espresso shots.
Let's get started with some espresso shots.
The fourth wave of COVID has not been kind to the public's perception of how President Biden is handling the pandemic. His approval dropped 12 percentage points last month. And now the
White House is trying to get the country back on track with a six-pronged COVID strategy reset.
The prongs are as follows. One, Increasing vaccinations. 2. Furthering protection for the
vaccinated. 3. Keeping schools open. 4. Increasing testing and masking. 5. Economic recovery. And 6.
Improving care for the infected. So far, it's heavy on vaccine requirements. Yesterday,
President Biden announced sweeping new requirements that will impact one-third of Americans,
which include ordering employers with over 100 employees to require vaccines or weekly testing.
The reset comes as average daily deaths top 1,500,
and Idaho state officials have told hospitals
overwhelmed by COVID cases to ration medical care.
Jesus showed compassion when people expected rejection,
gentleness when people expected anger,
and love when people expected hate.
Whether you're discussing vaccine mandates or re-sparking the Laurel and Yanny debate,
be imitators of Christ.
1 Corinthians 13, 4-6 says, Others, it is not self-seeking. It is not easily angered. It keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth.
Tomorrow marks the 20th anniversary of the terror attacks on September 11th, 2001.
20 years ago, 19 Al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four airplanes and flew into New York's Twin Towers and the Pentagon.
The last plane crashed into a Pennsylvania field York's Twin Towers and the Pentagon. The last
plane crashed into a Pennsylvania field after passengers courageously stormed the cockpit.
2,996 lives were lost, including hundreds of first responders. Also, the TSA's budget grew
a lot, and America's longest war began with the invasion of Afghanistan. The evacuation of
Americans from Afghanistan continued yesterday when the Taliban
allowed a flight carrying 200 people, including between 100 and 150 Americans, to leave the
country. Ahead of the anniversary, the Biden administration has ordered the declassification
of 9-11 investigations within six months, following pressure from victims' families
who have long sought information. Some will be released as early as tomorrow.
We live in a sinful, broken,
and unfair world. As Christians, we have the privilege of knowing this isn't our home. Even
as we work and pray for peace and reconciliation, we can take comfort knowing that all things will
ultimately be made right. On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand.
Edward Mote, 1863.
other ground is sinking sand. Edward Mote, 1863. Somehow, it always comes down to Joe Manchin.
With the Democrats' one-vote control of the Senate, they need perfect unity to pass the $3.5 trillion budget proposal that has zero Republican support. And once again, the moderate Democrat
from West Virginia is the dissenting voice. Manchin wants to set income thresholds for free pre-K, performance requirements for free
community college, and substantially lower funding for home care services.
His version of the bill could cut $2 trillion from the price tag, but would likely lose
the support of progressives like Bernie Sanders.
Meanwhile, President Biden has a hot new idea for another $562 billion, and that is solar energy. The
administration wants the sun to power 40% of the U.S. by 2035, which would be up from just 3% today.
In other brews, we've got a rapid round of updates.
China has suspended 22 K-pop fan pages as part of a crackdown on quote, irrational star worshipping.
This comes just days after fans of Jimin, the cutest member of the ridiculously popular K-pop group BTS,
paid to put his picture on a commercial plane in celebration of his birthday.
Subtle.
Joe Rogan has recovered from COVID after throwing the kitchen sink at the virus,
including ivermectin, an FDA
approved drug that is usually used to fight parasite infections. While the FDA does not
recommend ivermectin to fight COVID, they're more concerned with people taking high doses that are
designed for horses. Even with those biceps, Rogan did in fact take a human-sized dose.
The NFL's 102nd season kicked off last night with Tom Brady's Buccaneers taking on Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys.
The league is committing to making last year the only, quote, COVID season, and they issued strict protocols that pushed vaccine holdouts over the edge.
93% of players and 99% of staff are vaccinated.
A 7.0 magnitude earthquake rocked near the Mexican city of Acapulco on Wednesday.
At least one person was killed, buildings were damaged, and rock slides littered highways.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Mindy is now a tropical depression and is headed back out to sea after blowing through the Florida Panhandle and bringing severe rainfall.
Well, thank you so much for joining us. We hope you have a great day and we'll see you back here on Monday.
