Today we're talking about legal troubles for Hunter Biden and Donald Trump, a woman
president for Mexico, updates from Ukraine, and other top news for Friday, September 8th.
Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over.
Here's the quote of the day.
Faith isn't the ability to believe long and far into the misty future.
It's simply taking God at his word and taking the next step.
Johnny Erickson Tata.
Let's get started with some espresso shots.
Uncle Sam is setting up camp and getting cozy on his trip into unprecedented legal territory.
on his trip into unprecedented legal territory.
Special Counsel Dave Weiss's office announced that it will seek to indict
President Joe Biden's son Hunter
by the end of the month
for possessing a firearm while on narcotics.
A previous plea deal to clear his legal woes
fell apart in July.
Hunter's attorneys say they expect a fair resolution
to the five-year investigation based on the evidence, not outside political pressure.
Meanwhile, at least two of former President Trump's co-defendants in Georgia's RICO case have had their trial set for October 23.
Prosecutors are pushing to try the other 17 defendants, including Trump, at the same time, but the judge called that a bit unrealistic.
Prosecutors say the trial will take four months and include 150 witnesses.
That timeline does not include jury selection, which could last months on its own.
Whether justice is served or miscarried in American courts,
we can count on perfect justice and inexhaustible mercy from the courts of heaven.
The Lord is not swayed by the power and wealth that tempt us toward partiality,
and his verdicts restore what sin has broken.
Isaiah 30, verse 18 says,
The Lord longs to be gracious to you.
Therefore, he will rise up to show you compassion.
For the Lord is a
God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him. Women are at the political forefront in Mexico
this week. Wednesday, the Mexican Supreme Court voted to end the country's federal ban on abortion.
The ruling halts all federal criminal penalties
for abortions and requires federal public health services and institutions to offer them when
requested. Though government health care providers will be under the new ruling nationwide,
criminal penalties for abortions remain in 20 of Mexico's 32 states. Meanwhile,
Mexico is all but guaranteed to elect its first woman
president in June 2024. As of Wednesday, the country's two major parties have both selected
women as their presidential nominees. Former Mexico City Mayor and environmental scientist
Claudia Scheinbaum was selected as the incumbent party's candidate to face the opposition party's nominee, tech entrepreneur and current senator Xochitl Galvez.
Cultural winds, political ideologies, and positions of power shift from generation to generation, but the Lord and His Word are constants believers can bank on.
Psalm 119, verses 89 and and 90 and 159 and 160 say,
Consider how I love your precepts.
Give me life according to your steadfast love.
The sum of your word is truth,
and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.
Ukraine now sits atop an unwanted list. In 2022, Ukraine surpassed Syria,
who topped the list for nine years in cluster munition casualties. Almost all of the
916 reported casualties last year were civilians, and 71% were children. Russian explosives are the
primary culprit, but Ukraine is increasingly using American-provided cluster bombs.
Also continuing to wreak havoc, missiles. Wednesday, Russia launched some of its deadliest civilian attacks in months.
A missile strike killed at least 17 people and wounded 32 others at a crowded shopping district in Kostyantynivka, eastern Ukraine.
And Russian drones killed one person and damaged agricultural and port facilities near Odessa in southern Ukraine.
Hours later, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken made a surprise visit to Kyiv,
announcing over $1 billion in new aid and promising to stand by Ukraine's side.
Here's a verse to consider when your neighbor is mourning.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort.
He comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we receive from God.
2 Corinthians 1, verses 3 and 4.

Broadly speaking, there are two approaches to translating the Bible,
translating words versus translating phrases. The result is over 450 different English translations
and 2 Kings 4.29 reading, gird up your loins, don't lose a minute, and everything in between. The Christian
Standard Bible was translated using optimal equivalence, pursuing both linguistic precision
and readability. That means you're reading the same words spoken in 30 AD, except when word-for-word
translation breaks the English language. So quit procrastinating. Gird up your loins and check out all the CSB has

In other brews, here's a rapid round of updates.
The Lone Star State's floating barrier has hit a legal wall.
On Wednesday, a federal judge sided with the Biden administration against Texas, ordering the removal of the massive buoys that block an illegal immigration hotspot in the Rio Grande River.
The case is likely far from over, as Texas had promised to appeal.
The Biden administration has canceled the final seven oil and gas leases in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The Trump-era leases were supported by many lawmakers and Native Alaskans
as a way to boost the state's economy. Their cancellation was applauded by activists,
saying, our climate is a bit safer, and one of the last great wild landscapes is better protected.
Gender transition among minors remains a hot legal battleground.
Gender transition among minors remains a hot legal battleground.

On Wednesday, a California judge temporarily blocked a local school district policy requiring schools to notify parents if their child wants to change their gender identity or pronouns.
Spanish soccer star Jenny Hermoso has filed a sexual assault complaint against Federation President Luis Rubiales.
Under new sexual consent laws eliminating differences between harassment and assault,
Rubiales faces fines or jail time if found guilty. Hermoso and her team are also getting a new coach. Championship-winning Jorge
Vilda was fired Tuesday to be replaced by the team's first woman coach, Monse Tomei.
