Today we're talking about Tropical Storm Hillary, fires in the Great White North, a gathering at Camp David, and other top news for Monday, August 21st.
Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over.
Here's the verse of the week.
Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the
flesh. Romans 13 chapter 14. Let's get started with some espresso shots.
Tropical storm Hillary made landfall over Mexico's Baja California peninsula yesterday
before moving northward to become the first tropical storm to hit Southern
California in 84 years. Early yesterday, Hurricane Hillary weakened to a tropical storm. Still,
rainfall forecasts range from a few inches in L.A. to nearly a foot in Nevada. SoCal's desert
areas could be sloshed with a year's worth of rain, causing life-threatening flooding.

As the storm crawled north, mudslides stopped traffic in Antelope Valley, and a 5.1-magnitude earthquake shook several South California counties,
including Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and Ventura.
California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm,
which canceled flights and Hollywood pickets, closed beaches and schools, shuttered Disneyland early, and prompted the Navy to clear
their ships from San Diego Bay. It can be easy to become anxious over things that seem out of
control. Scripture reminds us that Jesus will be with his followers in scary and uncertain times,
and all the way into eternity. Psalms 23,
verse 4 says, even when I go through the darkest valley, I fear no danger, for you are with me.
Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
The friend of my friend is growing on me. South Korea and Japan have both historically been strong U.S. allies, but they haven't always loved each other.
The frosty relationship, which stems from Japan's rule of the Korean Peninsula from 1910 to 1945, has thawed recently amid China's increasing assertiveness and ongoing nuclear threats from North Korea.
China's increasing assertiveness and ongoing nuclear threats from North Korea. This weekend,
the two took another step toward congeniality during a meeting hosted by President Biden at Camp David, a location famous for forging international relationships. The three world
leaders formalized commitments to deepen economic and military cooperations, agreed to hold additional
trilateral summits at least annually, and called
out China's dangerous and aggressive behavior. A spokesperson for China's foreign ministry said
that exclusionary groupings such as this are not going to get support. Here's a verse to consider
when old enemies show signs of becoming friends. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Matthew 5, verse 9.
Over a thousand wildfires are raging across Canada,
forcing a fresh wave of evacuations.
In British Columbia alone,
evacuation orders climbed from 15,000 on Friday
to 35,000 by Sunday, with another 30,000
on alert. Farther north, the entire city of Yellowknife, the capital of Canada's Northwest
Territories, was ordered to evacuate. Canada's wildfire season usually slows in late August,
but there's nothing usual about this season, which is dwarfing previous records.

The fires are also fueling the feud between Canada's government and Meta.
Earlier this month, Canada passed a law requiring internet giants to pay news organizations when their content is shared.
And Meta, Facebook and Insta, responded by blocking all news articles.
Canada now demands that Meta lift this reckless ban,
saying it's preventing vital safety info from being shared.
Disastrous weather is a stark reminder that sin broke all of creation, not just humankind.
In the face of chaos and fear,
share your hope in the God
who will make his entire creation new again.
Isaiah 65, 17, and 19 say,
See, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered.
The sound of weeping and of crying will be heard in it no more.

The Women's World Cup ended yesterday, with Spain hoisting the trophy after defeating England 1-0.
Spanish captain Olga Carmona scored the only goal in the game in the 29th minute.
England's goalkeeper Mary Earps made a huge save, stopping a Spanish penalty kick,
but it didn't change the momentum as Spain held on for its first-ever World Cup championship.
It's a tale as old as vine.
Viral fame.

The transition to driverless taxi rides in San Francisco has been
bumpy. After California's Utilities Commission granted the request from GM-owned Cruise and
Google-owned Waymo to offer the rides, the city attorney is asking for a pause following multiple
incidents, including driverless taxis randomly stopping and clogging traffic, and one driving into wet cement at a construction site.
A 33-year-old British nurse was convicted of murdering seven babies in her neonatal unit
and attempting to murder six more between 2015 and 2016.
The convictions make her the most prolific serial killer of children in recent history.
Prosecutors found a note in her home that read,
I am evil. I did this.
Though she publicly maintains her innocence.
The first Republican presidential debate is Wednesday,
and it seems the biggest elephant won't be in the room.
Former President Trump plans to skip the debate,
instead sitting for an interview with
Tucker Carlson. A new poll shows Trump leading the GOP race at 56%, with Ron DeSantis and Vivek
Ramaswamy tied for second at 10%. And that's all we have for today. Thanks so much for listening.
