Starting point is 00:00:00 Today we're talking about Russia confirming the death of Yevgeny Prokhozhin, Spain's soccer scandal, a shooting in Jacksonville, Florida, and other top news for Monday, August 28th. Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over. Here's the verse of the week. Dear friends, I urge you as foreigners and exiles to abstain from sinful desires which wage war against your soul. 1 Peter 2, verse 11. Four people are dead in Jacksonville, Florida, after a shooter killed
Starting point is 00:00:35 three and then himself. The 21-year-old white shooter wielding two guns, one marked with a swastika, attacked a dollar general. He shot 11 rounds at a black woman sitting in her car before entering the store and killing two more, both also black. According to authorities, the shooting was undeniably racially motivated. During the rampage, the shooter texted his dad where to find his writings detailing how he hated black people. Police say that while the suspect was detained on a mental health hold in 2017, his guns were legally purchased. Florida Governor DeSantis called the shooter a coward and scumbag, while others like Florida Rep. Angie Nixon say the violence was perpetuated by rhetoric
Starting point is 00:01:18 and policies that target black people. In the face of heartbreaking violence, it's often hard to know where to start. The Bible says Jesus mourns evil with us, knows what we need before we ask, and gives us words to pray when we are stunned into silence. Matthew 6 verse 9 through 13 says, Our Father in heaven, your name be honored as holy. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors. D.N.A. evidence has confirmed the death of Putin's chief-turned-mercenary leader, Yevgeny Progozhin. The leader of the Wagner Group, a paramilitary organization that led a short-lived revolt against Russia's top military officials in June, was presumed dead after a plane crash outside Moscow last week. The Pentagon's preliminary theories pointed to an intentional
Starting point is 00:02:20 explosion taking down the plane. Russian investigators confirmed via genetic and molecular tests that all 10 passengers listed on the flight manifest died, including Progozhin, his top commander Dmitry Utkin, and his head of business Valery Chkalov. Now scattered without a leader, Wagner Group's thousands of mercenaries have been ordered to immediately sign an oath of allegiance to the Russian state and its leaders, orders coming from Russian President Vladimir Putin, aka Suspect No. 1 for Progozhin's death, an allegation he denies. We live in a world marred by sin. Even while we work to promote accountability and redemption here on earth, we can rest in the knowledge that the righteousness, justice, peace, and light of the
Starting point is 00:03:05 Lord will prevail. Psalm 37, verse 1, 5, and 10 through 11 say, Fret not yourself because of evildoers. Commit your way to the Lord. Trust in him, and he will act. In just a little while, the wicked will be no more, but the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace. After winning the World Cup, Spain's women's soccer team has a new standoff, against their own federation. Following Spain's victory, players lined up to receive medals and greet Royal Spanish Football Federation officials, including Federation President Luis Rubiales, who kissed each woman on the cheek. When star forward Jenny Hermoso got to Rubiales, he grabbed her face, kissed her on the cheek, and then on the mouth for the world to see. International concern was ignited for the presence of consent behind the display. Hermoso says the kiss was an act of
Starting point is 00:04:01 aggression and that she felt disrespected, while Rubiales said it was a consensual little peck. FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings against Rubiales and suspended him for 90 days, and 55 team members announced they'd sit out international play until Rubiales stepped down, something he's adamantly opposing. Here's a verse to consider when something doesn't sit right. Here's a verse to consider when something doesn't sit right. Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Colossians 3, verse 12.

Five of those injured were flown in serious condition to Darwin, Australia for treatment. The crash's cause is under investigation. Both Democrats and Republicans seem to agree that Trump's mugshot makes good merch, but for two very different reasons. The former president himself broke his two-year silence on X, Twitter, to share the photo and his campaign enjoyed its best fundraising day
Starting point is 00:06:05 ever on Friday, hauling in $4.18 million. Victor Shokin, Ukraine's former top prosecutor, alleges that Joe and Hunter Biden received bribes to force him out of office. Shokin was investigating Burisma Holdings, a Ukrainian company that gave Hunter Biden $1 million to sit on their board. President Biden has claimed credit for Shokin's ousting, but said it was done because Shokin was soft on corruption. Many remain unaccounted for after the wildfires that devastated Maui. The FBI's validated list includes 388 names, but Governor Josh Green says up to 1,200 have been reported missing. Meanwhile, Maui County has sued Hawaii's primary electrical utility for negligence, saying the power should have been shut off due to high winds and dry conditions. Bob Barker, the man with the skinny mic you watched explain Plinko on sick days, has died.
Starting point is 00:07:05 Barker, 99, began as a radio DJ and had his big break with Truth or Consequences in 1956. His iconic role as the Price is Right host ran from 1972 until his retirement in 2007. The only population not mourning the loss, neutered pets. And that's all we have for today.
