Starting point is 00:00:00 Today we're talking about the Super Bowl, Biden's warning to Americans in Ukraine, Canada's Freedom Convoy, and the copycat convoys, and other top news for Monday, February 14th. Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over. Here's the verse of the week. You make known to me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy. At your right hand are pleasures forevermore. Psalm 1611. Let's get started with some espresso shots. Matthew Stafford and the LA Rams became the second team in a row to hoist the Lombardi Trophy in their home stadium last night. Staged in Tinseltown, the stars and the drama showed up.
Starting point is 00:00:39 LA receiver Odell Beckham Jr. snagged the game's first touchdown, then left before halftime with a knee injury. The Rams pulled ahead with three points with less than two minutes left in the game, and the Bengals sputtered out in a heartbreaking final drive. Of course, some viewers were more interested in the TV timeouts. NBC was selling 30-second slots for $7 million apiece, and multiple crypto companies happily parted with the $165 Bitcoin required. From Dolly Parton to the E-Trade baby's resurrection, you could watch all the commercials in the link in our show notes. This year's halftime show, which featured Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, and others,
Starting point is 00:01:13 drew strong reviews on Twitter and likely caused more than one millennial who was channeling their middle school dances to injure their back. Averse to consider when wanting to yell at a referee, player, or the friend who promised to bring guac but didn't. No foul language should come from your mouth, but only what is good for building up someone in need, so that it gives grace to those who hear. Ephesians 4.29 Ambassador Bridge is back open. Canadians protesting COVID-19 social restrictions and vaccine requirements had blocked
Starting point is 00:01:45 the bridge which connects Michigan to Ontario and seized 25% of trade between the U.S. and Canada. The bridge largely cleared when police arrived Saturday morning, and by Sunday morning, only 12 protesters and two pickups remained. They were towed and arrested. But that's far from the end of the Freedom Convoy. Thousands of protesters continue to block roads in Canada's capital city, and unsupporting Ottowins are growing increasingly angry at the police for not quelling the noise and unclogging the traffic. Other countries are seeing copycat convoys. On Saturday, French police stopped more than 500 vehicles heading to protest in Paris, using tear gas and making quick arrests to prevent a larger demonstration on the famous Champs-Élysées Avenue. When discussing COVID mandates and protests,
Starting point is 00:02:26 remember that culturally hot topics frequently make people think, speak, and act poorly, and that includes us. We can respect others and represent God better if we're quick to listen and slow to speak. James 1.19 and 20 says, everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for human anger does not accomplish God's righteousness. If you're a U.S. citizen in Ukraine, it's time to cash in on those airline miles. The State Department received intelligence that Russia may invade this Wednesday and has told American personnel to evacuate the country immediately. Biden warned that any who stay and are caught in potential crossfire will not be rescued. Ukrainian President Zelensky isn't convinced that an invasion is imminent and asked the U.S. for evidence before issuing
Starting point is 00:03:08 heightened warnings to their citizens. Meanwhile, Russia still insists that the 100,000 troops stationed on three sides of the country are just part of a simple military exercise. But the international community just isn't buying it. German Chancellor Scholz heads to Moscow on Tuesday hoping to convince Putin to choose diplomacy, not war. There may be good reasons to be worried or scared about this day, month, or year. God doesn't promise good days. He promises a great eternity. Stay focused on eternity, because it changes everything. Job 12.10 says, The life of every living thing is in his hand, as well as the breath of all of humanity.
Starting point is 00:03:46 Today's podcast is sponsored by, well, us. At The Pour Over, we believe that news can actually be a force for good, helping people find rest and comfort in Christ while spurring them on to loving action, instead of, you know, creating division, anger, and just having a persistent feeling of impending doom. For example, and keep this in mind while reading today's news, even if everything goes wrong, your eternity is secure. To operate the pour-over, it costs about 20 cents per subscriber. Many readers and listeners are unable or unwilling to pay, but you can actually sling four of them on your back and support our staff and mission for just $1 a month. Starting point is 00:04:30 As of Sunday evening, Norway led the Olympics, boasting both the most gold medals, nine, and total medals, 21. The United States has six gold and 12 total, thanks in part to speed skater Erin Jackson, who became the first black woman to win an individual gold medal at a Winter Olympics. You can see the live medal count in the link in our show notes. President Biden signed an executive order to split $7 billion in Afghan assets, which were frozen when the Taliban took control, between 9-11 victims and humanitarian aid to Afghanistan. Former Afghan President Karzai said that he shares the pain of families who lost loved ones in 9-11, but called seizing Afghan funds unjust and unfair. A fresh wave of states legalizing sports betting made yesterday's Super Bowl the most gambled-upon game in history. An estimated $7.6 billion was legally bet yesterday, up 78% from last year.
Starting point is 00:05:22 Once again, Houston-based furniture salesman Mattress Mac made headlines for his massive wagers. He bet $9.5 million on the Bengals winning. Ouch. LeBron James has scored 44,152 points in the NBA, more than anyone else. He passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the all-time scoring record, which combines regular season and postseason points, on Saturday night. He still ranks third combines regular season and postseason points on Saturday night. He still ranks third in regular season points scored behind Karl Malone and Kareem. That's all we have for today. Thanks so much for listening. If you're looking for another way to support the mission of The Pour Over, some low-hanging fruit would be leaving us a five-star
Starting point is 00:05:59 rating on Spotify or Apple Podcasts and dropping a review. We actually read every one of these and take them to heart. Like this review from Joe underscore 1029384756. He says, my best news source may also be my only news source. Thanks so much, Joe underscore 1029384756. We really appreciate the compliment. We hope you have a great rest of your day and we'll see you back here on Wednesday.
