Today we're covering protests in Canada, political battles, the Olympics, and other
top news for Monday, February 7th.
Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over.
Here's the verse of the day.
Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than
over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.
Luke 15, 7.
Let's get started with some espresso shots.
Canada's Freedom Convoy started as a protest against the vaccine mandate for truckers crossing
the U.S. and Canada border, but has evolved into a criticism of all public health mandates
and Justin Trudeau's government. It's also persisting. Today is day 10. Organizers say
they're peacefully protesting
mandates that are destroying the foundation of our businesses, industries, and livelihoods.
And they won't leave until all COVID-19 restrictions are gone. They've even brought
in portable saunas because, well, it's winter in Ottawa. Critics say it's transitioned from
peaceful protest to occupation of Ottawa. GoFundMe has shut down the Freedom Convoy's fundraiser and
will be
refunding $9 million in donations, citing evidence from law enforcement that it's funding an unlawful
activity. GoFundMe originally planned to redirect the funds to other charities, but reversed course
after blowback from supporters. Followers of Christ are not identified by their political
affiliation, but by their love for others. And yes, that means loving people that you believe have unloving beliefs and stances. Be gracious and kind, even to those you
don't feel deserve it. But love your enemies, do what is good, and lend, expecting nothing in return.
Then your reward will be great, and you. Luke 6, 35.
Politicians are eating leftovers from 2020 and 2021. First up, redistricting based on the 2020 census results. 36 states have finished redrawing their congressional maps, but others are having
to start from scratch after courts gave their first drafts a grade of needs improvement.
Meanwhile, the Republican National Committee voted overwhelmingly to censure, which means publicly slap on the wrist, Representatives
Cheney, who is a Republican from Wyoming, and Kissinger, who is a Republican from Illinois,
for participating in the January 6th congressional panel, described as a, quote,
Democrat-led persecution of ordinary citizens engaged in legitimate political discourse that
had nothing to do with violence at the Capitol. Democrats and a few Republicans condemned this venture. Speaking of 2021,
former President Trump and former Vice President Pence's disagreement on the VP's authority over
electoral college ballots has lawmakers looking at clarifying the role of the VP once and for all.
We shouldn't allow the success or failure of a political party to consume our thoughts,
emotions, or hope for the future. Regardless of circumstance, our mission remains the same.
Love God and love others. Matthew 22, 37 and 39 says,
Jesus said to him,
Chances are you didn't watch the Winter Olympics this weekend. command. The second is like it. Love your neighbor as yourself.
Chances are you didn't watch the Winter Olympics this weekend. American viewership of the opening ceremonies was down 43% from 2018, and NBC officials and insiders are blaming COVID-19,
China's human rights record, and the 14-hour time difference. Undeterred by lower viewership,
Theresa Johog of Norway obliterated the competition and nabbed the game's first gold medal in cross-country skiing. You can see the
medal tracker in our show notes. Earlier this week, we asked the TPO community on Instagram
what they were most excited to watch. 59% said figure skating and 20% picked snowboarding.
Surprisingly, nobody mentioned Skeleton, a mind-bending spectacle where athletes sprint
40 meters, dive headfirst into a sled, and then race around an ice track at speeds up to 90 miles per hour.

The latest jobs report was surprisingly awesome, despite Omicron's surge.
The Labor Department announced that the U.S. added 460,000 jobs in January,
which was significantly more than the expected 150,000.
And the Labor Department adjusted November and December's numbers
to show a massive 709,000 more jobs that were added those months than previously estimated.
