Today we're talking about Ukrainian drones, extreme weather around the globe, the upcoming
Republican debate, and other top news for Monday, July 31st.
Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over.
Here's the quote of the day.
Becoming ourselves means we are actively cooperating with God's intention for our lives, not fighting
Him or ourselves.
Stacey Eldridge.
Let's start with some espresso shots.
Russia and Ukraine are continuing to exchange fire. Russia says it shot down a Ukrainian drone
aimed at Moscow and suppressed two others that crashed into empty office buildings on Sunday,
calling the incident a terrorist attack by Ukraine. Ukraine's President Zelensky did not directly claim responsibility,
but said that war, returning to Russian territory, is inevitable, natural, and absolutely fair.
The Kremlin also claims to have thwarted attacks on the Crimean Peninsula and the city of Taganrog,
where debris from an intercepted missile reportedly injured 16
people. In the other direction, Kiev claims that Russian missiles killed two civilians in the city
of Sumy and two more in Zaporizhia. Meanwhile, Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chair of Russia's
Security Council, said a successful Ukrainian offensive would force Moscow to use nuclear
weapons. Christians, we can live without fear,
not because nothing bad can happen to us on earth,
but because regardless of what happens on earth,
our eternity is secure.
This should not cause us to be indifferent
to the world's problems, but bold in our response to them.
Psalm 34, verse 18 says,
the Lord is near the brokenhearted.
He saves those crushed in spirit.
No, your calendar isn't broken. The first Republican presidential debate is really less than a month away. Candidates must meet the following criteria to appear on stage August 23rd.
One, 40,000 unique donors. Two, polling at 1%. And three, vowing to support the eventual
nominee. So far, seven candidates have qualified, including Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, and Tim Scott.
Mark frontrunner former President Trump down as a maybe. He hasn't committed to supporting the
eventual nominee and questioned why he should debate when he holds a commanding lead in the
polls. Whether or not he attends, expect Trump and his legal battles to be discussed.
Last week, prosecutors added charges to his Florida indictment,
accusing him of asking a Mar-a-Lago employee to delete security footage after it had been subpoenaed.
Trump called the new charges ridiculous and abuse.
A presidential debate may be important to the U.S.,
but will likely have little impact
on the kingdom of God. This does not mean we shouldn't care at all, but we should not let it
steal our focus from Christ. Colossians 1 verses 15 through 16 says, He is the image of the invisible
God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth,
visible and invisible,
whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities, all things were created through
him and for him. Sweaty scientists are already calling July the hottest month recorded since
recording hot months became a thing. In Phoenix, Saturday
marked 30 consecutive days with temperatures over 110 degrees, incinerating 1978's record 18-day
hot streak. Scorching temps across the southern U.S. have over 20 states under heat advisories,
prompting even bears to seek out refreshment. For the American Southwest, the start of monsoon
season is expected to temper
extreme heat. Across the globe, extreme rainfall is the concern. Super Typhoon Dock Suri made
landfall in southeast China Friday after blowing through the Philippines and Taiwan, bringing heavy
rainfall, strong winds, and evacuations for over 400,000 people. It's the strongest typhoon to hit
China this year. On the horizon, Typhoon Canaan, China's the strongest typhoon to hit China this year.
On the horizon, Typhoon Canaan,
China's third in three weeks,
is expected to come ashore this week.
Here's a verse to consider whether your neighbor needs a tarp for his roof
or someone to talk to.
Share with the Lord's people who are in need.
Practice hospitality.

And the 2023 Actors' Writer's Strike latest victim is the Emmys. The award show's 75th

It's the first delay since 2001 for the Emmy Awards, which Hollywood heavily relies on for promotional opportunities despite the annual ceremony's declining ratings.
Five days after suffering cardiac arrest during basketball practice at USC, LeBron James' 18-year-old
son, Bronny, is back playing the piano. LeBron shared an Instagram video of Bronny tickling the
ivories, saying God is great, telling his son he's amazing and his family is with him every step of
the way. No word yet on Bronny's future with basketball. Friday, President Biden signed an
executive order reforming the military's judicial
system five months ahead of a deadline set by Congress last year. The order creates an
independent council to oversee prosecution of offenses like sexual assault, domestic violence,
child abuse, and murder, removing prosecutorial decision-making from the chain of command
in an effort to promote fairness and uniformity.
