Today we're talking about mass shootings that happened over the weekend, the stock market's losing streak, an update on the war in Ukraine, and other top news for Monday, May 16th. Let's get started with some espresso shots. Four shootings in two cities left at least 10 people dead and 24 injured over the weekend. In Buffalo, New York, an 18-year-old white male opened fire in a grocery store in a predominantly black neighborhood, leaving 10 people dead and at least three injured. Authorities have labeled it a hate crime after uncovering a racist manifesto allegedly written by the suspect, who live-streamed the attack on Twitch. The shooter, who has a history of mental health struggles and attack threats, is being held without bail. In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at least 21 people were shot, none fatally, in three separate incidents after the Bucks' Game 6 playoff loss. Eleven people were taken into custody and downtown Milwaukee Game seven watch parties

were canceled. The promise of heaven does not remove the pains of this world, but it does give us hope, strength, and peace during life's most difficult seasons. Join us in praying for hope, strength, and peace for the families and first responders in Milwaukee and Buffalo. Psalm 121, 1 and 2 says, I lift my eyes towards the mountains. Where will my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth. The stock market had a refreshingly strong Friday, but it couldn't undo a bad Monday through Thursday, or month, or 2022. The Dow Jones just posted its first seven-week losing streak in over a decade. Investors are worried about the same things they were seven weeks ago, inflation, Ukraine, supply chain issues, labor shortages, and, once more for good measure, inflation.

Senators hope Jerome Powell just needs more time to find his cape. The Senate reconfirmed Powell as chairman of the Federal Reserve with a convincing 80-19 vote, giving him another four years to lead the central bank. Powell's efforts to stabilize the economy during the pandemic were widely applauded, but inflation is proving to be a stickier wicket. Powell says he's committed to doing everything possible, but he can't guarantee a soft landing. Regardless of whether the economy thrives or collapses, God will still be God and he will remain in control. Our eternity is secure even in the midst of uncertainty on earth.

Hebrews 13.8 says, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. After weeks of heavy bombardment, Russia has pulled back from Ukraine's second largest city, Kharkiv, and shifted their focus east to the Donetsk province. Meanwhile, Ukraine got some very public displays of support. Finland, a historically neutral country, formally announced their intent to join NATO. Displeased, Russia turned off their lights, or 10% of them anyway. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, the Republican from Kentucky, led a GOP Senate delegation to Ukraine.

President Zelensky thanked them for Uncle Sam's support and asked that Russia be designated as a quote, terrorist state. Ukrainian band Kalush Orchestra won the Eurovision Song Contest and used their spotlight to make a public appeal for fighters besieged in Mariupol's Azovstal steel plant. Eurovision may not be popular in the U.S., but it draws an enormous 180 million viewers globally. It's easy to feel helpless when it comes to wars and world politics, but the Bible promises that prayer is powerful and effective. It causes things to happen that would not have happened otherwise. James 5.16 says, the prayer of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect. We think the pour-over is like a friend's hot spot or Chick-fil-A ice, available free but also

Nurses marched in response to unsafe working conditions and the controversial criminal conviction of Redonda Vaught, a nurse who was sentenced to three years probation on Friday for a medical mistake. Separately, there were over 370 organized pro-choice rallies on Saturday, protesting the potential overturn of Roe v. Wade.

The House introduced two new pieces of legislation on Sunday in hopes of shaking up the baby formula shortage. One bill would ease restrictions around purchasing formula, particularly for low-income families, and the other would allow the U.S. to import formula from overseas. North Korea has reported 42 deaths and 820,620 people with fevers since confirming its first COVID case last week. Experts fear it could experience the worst death rate in the world without outside help. North Korea has refused COVID tests, vaccines, and other medicine for

years, asserting it had zero cases. Elon Musk says he and Twitter are on the rocks again. The world's wealthiest man announced, via Twitter, that his deal to buy the social media company was on hold, pending a review of how many accounts are actually spam bots. But he later clarified that he's, quote, still committed to the acquisition. Two massive Game 7s in the NBA occurred yesterday to set the conference finals. The Boston Celtics won and will take on the Miami Heat, and the Dallas Mavericks won and will take on the Miami Heat and the Dallas Mavericks won and will take on the Golden State Warriors.
