A COVID pill, Netflix's new top show, women's soccer scandal, and other top news for today,
Monday, October 4th. Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over.
Thanks for joining us. Here's the quote of the day.
Remind me that not everything needs to be said,
and that there are very few things that need to be said by me. Elizabeth Elliott.
The U.S. hit a grim milestone late Friday, 700,000 COVID-19 deaths. Losing the population
of Boston aside, it's not all bad news. After two months of climbing, the average daily deaths are
once again trending down, currently about 1,850, and the pharmaceutical
company Merck announced their new antiviral pill, molnupiravir, cut the risk of hospitalization,
or death, in half. Current COVID patients are often treated with monoclonal antibodies,
which are pricey and require an IV, and thus a nurse. A take-twice-daily-for-five-days option
would provide hospitals with some much-needed relief. Meanwhile, the FDA's panel of advisors got a few meeting invites for October.
Topics of discussion include boosters for Moderna and J&J, mixing and matching vaccines,
and authorizing vaccines for youngsters ages 5 to 11.
When discussing divisive topics such as vaccines, remember that both your stance and how you take your stance reflect on Christ. We should not be willing to sacrifice relationships to
win an argument. James 1, 19-20 says, My dear brothers and sisters, understand this. Everyone
should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for human anger does not accomplish God's righteousness. After a booming 2020, Netflix's subscriber growth
and stock both fell into a slump, but the king of streaming didn't stay down long,
thanks to Squid Game. Squid Game is a fictional Korean series where debt-laden contestants compete
in children's games on an island, a single winner walks away with $40 million, and the losers are
killed. The script was rejected by studios for a decade, for being too grotesque if you can believe
it, but is now the streaming giant's number one show in 90 countries, including the US,
and expected to become their most watched show ever. It's not just dystopian game shows,
Netflix is also enjoying a boost from the long-awaited arrival of Seinfeld.
Their stock is up 19% since August 1st, pointing to a happy Festivus at Netflix HQ this year.
The world has different priorities than God does, and many eternally insignificant things,
like a new TV show, can be compelling for a season. Let them not distract us from Christ.
Philippians 4 verse 8 says, Finally, brothers and sisters, verse 8 says,
The National Women's Soccer League canceled all games last weekend after a report about abuse and sexual misconduct came out against coach Paul Reilly, who has coached three different
franchises over eight seasons. The report alleges that Reilly sexually harassed players and,
in one incident, used his position to coerce a player into sleeping with him.
Reilly, who was fired on Thursday, acknowledged he may have spoken offensively but called any accusation of sexual misconduct untrue. Remarkably, Riley
was one of two coaches fired just last week and one of four fired this season. U.S. soccer and
FIFA have both promised investigations and several leaders, including the NWSL commissioner,
were removed from their roles on Friday.
In other brews, here's a rapid round of updates.
Speaker Pelosi, a Democrat from California, announced October 31st as the new deadline
for passing the $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill. The previous deadline
was Thursday, but Democratic moderates and progressives failed to find a compromise.
In President Biden's words, everybody is frustrated.
The cost of goods and services rose further in August, keeping the U.S. inflation at a 30-year
high. Federal Reserve leaders previously insisted inflation would start to fall by the new year,
but over the past week they conceded inflation could remain high into 2022.
Aussie media's collapse took just five days.
Last Sunday, the New York Times published an article claiming, among other things, that
their COO had impersonated a YouTube executive to help raise money from Goldman Sachs.
On Friday, the board voted to close the company.
That was quick.

Yesterday, Tom Brady made his first return to the Patriots' Gillette Stadium since joining the Buccaneers. It was a history night for TB12, who enjoyed a one-minute tribute video of his time
with the Patriots and later passed Drew Brees to become the NFL's all-time passing yard leader.
Portions of the SoCal coastline are covered with oil after
3,000 barrels gushed into the Pacific Ocean this weekend. By Sunday, dead birds and fish began
washing ashore. In the Atlantic Ocean, volcanoes forced evacuations of Spain's Canary Islands as
lava and ash were launched 20,000 feet high, destroying over 1,000 buildings.
