Today we're talking about the plans put in motion following the Queen's passing,
a 200-day update from Ukraine, states of emergency across the U.S.,
and other top news for Monday, September 12th.
Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over.
Here's the quote of the day.
The remarkable thing about God is that when you fear God, you fear nothing else,
whereas if you do not fear God, you fear everything else.
Oswald Chambers
Let's get started with some espresso shots. nothing else, whereas if you do not fear God, you fear everything else. Oswald Chambers.
Let's get started with some espresso shots.
When Queen Elizabeth II passed away Thursday, a long to-do list unfurled.
Operations Lion, London Bridge, Unicorn, and Spring Tide went into effect,
detailing various plans for the memorialization of the Queen and the accession of the son,
formerly known as Prince. Still to be tackled, changing the national flags, currency, stamps,
and anthem, and re-pledging allegiances to the king. Some of the Commonwealth's 14 territories may pursue independence, however, since their constitutions only assert the queen as head of
state. King Charles gave his first address on Friday, honoring his mother and vowing his,
quote, lifelong service. It's thought that the king will pare down the monarchy, having a smaller group of core royals do fewer official
things. That may become a trend. Only 39% of Brits expect the monarchy to last another hundred years.
The world has different priorities than God does, and many eternally insignificant things
are compelling for a season. These things may not be wrong to follow, but neither should they consume our attention. Colossians 3, 2-4 says, Set your mind on things above, not on earthly
things. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life,
appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. The war is 200 days old, and Ukraine's
counteroffensive against Russian-held territory
in the east and south is picking up steam. Since late August, Ukraine has recaptured roughly 1,100
square miles, including strategic towns, roads, and rivers. The offensive has forced Russian troops
to retreat. The Kremlin has said they're simply, quote, regrouping, a move that has drawn criticism
from normally pro-Kremlin bloggers, press, and even the Russian-aligned semi-autonomous leader of Chechnya.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky even taunted Russia,
saying its army is simply, quote,
demonstrating the best it can do, showing its back.
Meanwhile, that sigh of relief you heard this weekend was all the way from Zaporizhia.
The nuclear power plant was reconnected to the electrical grid,
allowing all reactors to be powered down,
greatly reducing the risk of a nuclear meltdown. Our hope is never contingent on who is winning a war. It's much more
secure than that. Regardless of whether things get worse or better during your lifetime, everything
eventually ends well for followers of Christ. Job 12.10 says, the life of every living thing
is in his hand, as well as the breath of all humanity.
Governors and mayors across the country are shouting emergency from their balconies.
California Governor Newsom declared a state of emergency for counties threatened by massive wildfires that are so large they're creating their own weather patterns. The fires, extreme heat,
and the remnants of Hurricane K are all stretching the state's electrical grid to its max.
Washington, D.C. Mayor Bowser declared an emergency on Thursday over an influx of migrants
who were bussed in from Arizona and Texas. It's a move by the state's Republican governors meant
to draw attention to the influx of migrants at the southern border. New York Governor Hochul
declared an emergency over polio in an effort to boost vaccination rates. Although there's only
been one confirmed case, the paralytic virus has been increasingly detected in the state's wastewater.
Followers of Christ should not become cynical, desensitized, or unmoved by stories of those
in need, but endlessly willing to help, seek, or create opportunities to do good and to share with
people impacted by these news stories. Hebrews 13.16 says, don't neglect to do what is good and to share, for God is pleased with such sacrifices.

Yesterday marked the 21st anniversary of the terror attack on September 11, 2001 that killed 2,996 people and forever changed the United States.
In remembrance of the day, the president visited the Pentagon, the first lady visited the crash site of Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and the vice president visited New York City.
Former President Trump and the Justice Department each submitted proposals related to the Mar-a-Lago investigation's, quote, special master, and they agree on nothing.
The two parties have differing views on who the special master should be, who should pay them, what documents they should have access to, and their deadline to finish the review.
This weekend was for sports lovers.
The NFL kicked off its regular season.
Three Power Five teams were upset by stun belt teams in a crazy college football day, the U.S. Open crowned winners with not-so-big
names, and MLB passed 2023 rule changes aimed at speeding up the game and infuriating people
who missed the good old days. The average 30-year mortgage is 5.89%, the highest rate since 2008,
and up from 2.88% one year ago. Mortgage rates are expected
to keep climbing because the Fed hasn't shown any signs of taking off its hiking boots. Analysts
expect the central bank to raise rates by another 0.75% this month. Runners across the country rose
early Friday to finish Eliza's run, honoring Eliza Fletcher, the Memphis, Tennessee wife,
mom, and kindergarten
teacher who was abducted and murdered while on an early morning run last week. A 38-year-old
man with a history of kidnapping has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping.
