Today we're talking about Israel announcing a new phase of war, the investigation into a troubled
Boeing plane, congressional leaders agreeing to spending caps, and other top news for Wednesday,
January 10th. Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over today.
Here's the quote of the day. Satan's greatest success is in making people think
they have plenty of time before they die to consider their eternal welfare. John Owen.
Let's get started with some espresso shots.
Week 13 of the Israel-Hamas war got off to a busy start. On Monday, in another targeted airstrike,
Israel killed senior Hezbollah commander Wissam Hassan al-Tawil in Lebanon after his forces
launched a missile toward northern Israel. Also on Monday, Israel announced it was entering a
more targeted stage of the war, shifting away from its all-out ground-and-air campaign by the end of January.
It's seen as a response to Israel's allies voicing concerns about a wider regional war,
though critics want Israel to scale their attacks back much further and faster.
Also on Monday, some of those critics interrupted President Biden's campaign speech in South Carolina with chants of, cease fire now. Pro-Palestinian protesters
also clogged traffic in New York City, blocking several bridges and a tunnel before police made
325 arrests. God doesn't promise a world without troubles. Actually, Jesus straight up said the opposite.
But he does promise peace and victory over sin for all who trust in Jesus.
During times dominated by uncertainty and fear,
our eternity is secure and we can cling to his promises.
John 16 verse 33 says,
I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me.
Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows,
but take heart because I have overcome the world.
First, they were grounded.
Now the Boeing 737 MAX 9s are really in trouble.
Now the Boeing 737 MAX 9s are really in trouble.
United Airlines and Alaska Airlines said they found other Boeing 737 MAX 9s had loose bolts in an inspection prompted by an incident last Friday when a panel blew off in Alaska Airlines'
plane mid-flight near Portland, Oregon. The panel, known as a door plug, was found in a
Oregon. The panel, known as a door plug, was found in a Portlandian's backyard and is being inspected. It wasn't that plane's first brush with trouble. The NTSB said it had an auto
pressurization failure light illuminate three times since it was delivered on October 31,
causing it to be restricted from flying to Hawaii so it wouldn't be over water in an emergency.
it to be restricted from flying to Hawaii so it wouldn't be over water in an emergency.
It's unclear whether the issues were related. Stock for Spirit Aerosystems, which installed the door plugs, fell 11% Monday. Boeing stock fell 8%.
Here's a verse to consider when boarding your next flight and wondering how tight those bolts are.
In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.
Job 12, verse 10.
Congressional leaders have agreed on how much to spend this year.
$1.66 trillion.
The agreement largely follows spending caps negotiated by then-Speaker McCarthy and President Biden last summer.
All that's left is figuring out all the details and passing a possibly contentious vote before January 19,
when some government programs begin to run out of money. Easy peasy.
Senate Majority Leader Schumer and House Speaker Johnson both claimed the agreement as a victory
for their party. It's Johnson's first bipartisan deal, and he touted $16 billion in new savings,
but acknowledged that it won't satisfy everyone. He was right. Hardline Republicans called it a total failure, demanding deeper cuts.
The final version will likely require bipartisan support to pass,
and negotiations could be derailed over important policy riders, like funding for abortion.
Jesus showed compassion when people expected rejection,
gentleness when people expected anger,
and love when people expected hate.
Whether you're negotiating a trillion-dollar budget
or simply having a family dinner this week,
be imitators of Christ.
1 Corinthians 16, verse 14 says,
Do everything in love.
What would you do if you were falsely accused of murder? For Hannah Overton, that question
isn't hypothetical. Hannah was a regular mom of four in Texas, when out of the blue,
she was falsely accused of murder. Hannah was shocked by the lies, and as a firm believer,
she knew that God would come to
her rescue and never let those rumors spread. But the exact opposite happened. Hannah eventually
stood before a jury of her peers and heard them sentence her to life in prison. This was a terrible
mistake. How could God have let her down? But Hannah would soon discover that God had a plan all of his own. Listen to
Hannah's entire story on episode number 16 on The Compelled Podcast, titled Falsely Accused of
Murder and Sentenced to Life in Prison. Listen on your podcast app or at compelledpodcast.com.
In other brews, here's a rapid round of updates.
Yesterday, former President Trump appeared in D.C. before a federal appeals court,
seeking immunity for his involvement in the January 6th riots.
His lawyers argued that presidents can't be prosecuted for actions in office, but the judges seemed skeptical about applying this immunity in a criminal case.
The election interference case against Trump is on hold pending the judge's decision.
They went all the way. The Michigan Wolverines went 15-0 and won the national championship,
never trailing in Monday night's college football playoff final
and beating the University of Washington 34-13.
Overcoming a season of off-the-field strife,
head coach Jim Harbaugh's next challenge is his first tattoo.
He promised his team he'd get some ink if they went undefeated.
The tech world is ringing in the new year at CES, where futuristic new products are unveiled.
This year's marquee tech includes a rolling projector robot, weird-looking concept cars,
a contraption that makes walking 20% easier, and multiple transparent TVs.
Also at CES, Volkswagen announced it will install chat GPT on new vehicles to offer some voice
control options. Another batch of Epstein court documents was unsealed Monday. In them, it's revealed that in 2016, an Epstein
accuser claimed to have copies of graphic tapes that Epstein took of high-profile friends like
Trump, Clinton, and Prince Andrew. Later that year, the woman retracted her claim,
admitting in 2019 that she invented the tapes to draw attention to Epstein's behavior.

Tiger Woods has split from his college sweetheart, Nike.
Woods signed with Nike when he turned pro 27 years ago and has since been paid $500 million to sport the swoosh.
Like most breakups, the signs were there.
Woods started wearing Foot Joy shoes after injuring his leg in a car crash.
Speculation swirls about who Tiger will sign with next.
