Today, we're talking about former President Trump's defamation damages,
the UN's recent statement to Israel, the battle over the U.S.-Mexico border,
and other top news for Monday, January 29th.
Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over today.
Here's the quote of the day.
There are two ways to get enough.
One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less. G.K. Chesterton.
Let's get started with some espresso shots.
On Friday, a jury ordered former President Trump to pay $83.3 million to writer E. Jean
Carroll for defamation, a much higher than expected penalty intended to pay $83.3 million to writer E. Jean Carroll for defamation,
a much higher-than-expected penalty intended to deter future behavior.
Trump had been found liable for sexual assault and defamation in a previous civil case,
and this jury was only tasked with assessing damages for other instances of defamation.
In a statement, Carroll said this is a
huge defeat for every bully who has tried to keep a this is a Trump said,
Separately, a verdict is expected this week in the former president's New York civil fraud trial,
where prosecutors are seeking the return of $370 million in what they allege are ill-gotten gains.
Culturally hot topics, such as former President Trump's legal battles, frequently make people think, speak, and act poorly, including us.
We can respect others and represent God better when we are committed to be good listeners,
people who seek to understand before we seek to be understood.
James 1, 19 and 20 says,
for human anger does not accomplish God's righteousness.
Representatives from Israel, Qatar, Egypt, and the U.S. met in Paris to broker a ceasefire.
Israel said the first day was constructive, but had significant gaps.
Talks will continue throughout this week.
The peace deal discussions followed a busy weekend for U. for UN agencies involved in the Israel-Hamas war. On Friday, the UN's International Court of Justice
ruled that Israel must prevent more civilian deaths in Gaza and take action against genocide,
but stopped short of calling for a ceasefire or issuing a verdict on whether Israel has
committed genocide. That ruling could take years.
Then, the UN agency distributing aid in Gaza fired several employees who reportedly participated in October 7's attack against Israel. The revelation prompted several countries, including the U.S.,
to suspend funding the agency while an investigation takes place.
investigation takes place. There may be good reasons to be worried about this day, month,
or year. God does not promise good days. He promises a great eternity. Even while working for justice and peace today, never lose sight of eternity. Philippians 4.6 says,
don't worry about anything, but in everything,
through prayer and petition, with thanksgiving,
present your requests to God.
The Lone Star State is at the forefront of a good old-fashioned constitutional showdown.
Facing record migrant encounters at the southern border,
300 and 2,000 in December,
Texas has been taking matters into its own hands by erecting razor wire barriers. One week ago, the Supreme Court ruled
that federal agents, Border Patrol, can remove the razor wire because the Constitution relegates
border security to the federal government. Texas noted that the ruling didn't prevent them from
putting up razor wire, only that feds can remove it, and have continued erecting barriers.
25 Republican governors have signed a letter expressing solidarity with Texas.
They say the federal government has abdicated its duty to defend the nation
from what Texas Governor Abbott has called an invasion.
The White House disagrees, calling GOP opposition a political stunt
and saying that immigration reform must go through Congress.
We are called to love everyone always.
That means loving and caring for immigrants, Border Patrol agents, Texans, Mexicans, Democrats, Republicans, and people who passionately disagree with you on the issue of immigration.
Luke 6.32 says,
With over 1,000 translations and every type of decorative edition,
it's easy to forget how many people can't even get their hands on a single
copy of the Bible in their native language. This is why we've partnered with Crew. Crew has
missionaries in almost every country, but they need more Bibles. One missionary said,
I have never seen such a thirst for the Word of God in my country. Let's quench that thirst.

Here's a rapid round of updates.
What happens in Vegas on February 11th is Super Bowl 58.
For the fourth time in five years, the Kansas City Chiefs are headed to the big game after beating the Baltimore Ravens 17-10.
They'll play the San Francisco 49ers, who came back from a 24-7 halftime deficit to stun the Detroit Lions.
Three American troops were killed and dozens more injured in a drone strike in Jordan yesterday.
President Biden blamed Iran-backed militias and promised to
hold all those responsible to account.
Meanwhile, the Houthis, also backed by Iran,
attacked a U.S. warship and British tanker in the Red Sea on Friday.
WWE founder Vince McMahon resigned on Sunday amid sexual misconduct and sex trafficking allegations.
A former employee alleges she was required to sleep with McMahon
to remain employed and be promoted
and was later trafficked to other men both inside and outside the WWE organization.
McMahon denies the allegations, saying the lawsuit is
X, formerly Twitter, is blocking searches for Taylor Swift after fake, sexually explicit AI-generated images of the pop star began going viral.
Swifties quickly came to the star's aid, reporting accounts and flooding the site with safer work images of Taylor to bury any bad posts.
Deepfakes are a growing problem.
Last week, a robocall imitating President Biden encouraged people not to vote. NASA announced its history-making mini-Mars helicopter, Ingenuity, suffered a
career-ending rotor injury earlier this month. NASA sent the 19-inch copter to Mars hoping for
just five flights, but it overcame the thin atmosphere 72 times, flying higher and farther
than we ever imagined. Ingenuity was just the first aircraft to fly in another planet and will be missed.
