Today we're talking about President Biden's trip to Maui, former President Trump's planned arraignment in Georgia, the BRICS summit, and other top news for Wednesday, August 23rd.

Here's the quote of the day.
Humility is the foundation of all the other virtues.
Hence, in the soul in which this virtue does not exist, there cannot be any other
virtue except in mere appearance. St. Augustine. Let's start with some espresso shots.
President Biden was in Maui Monday, almost two weeks after wildfires claimed at least 115 lives
and left about 850 still missing. Hawaiian Electric Co. now faces lawsuits for its
role in the blaze. Lawyers claim that the power should have been shut off to prevent sparks from
igniting dry vegetation, saying the fire was predictable given strong winds, bone-dry conditions,
and dilapidated power poles. Hawaiian Electric has defended its decision to leave the power on
and keep communication lines open.
Blame has also shifted to Washington.
Critics slammed the president for having no comment on the disaster,
forgetting Maui's name, and offering only $700 per affected household.
The White House said they didn't want to interfere with local rescue efforts
and would do everything possible for the island.
God knows the path of every spark.
He sees the thoughts and intentions of every heart, and he is an impartial judge. Seek restoration
while trusting the Lord for the ultimate help, compassion, and justice we need in a broken world.
Hosea 12 verse 6 says, maintain love and justice and wait for your God always.
Maintain love and justice and wait for your God always.
Donald Trump will have Georgia on his mind tomorrow.
The former president and current 2024 Republican frontrunner will surrender to authorities at the Fulton County Courthouse in Atlanta.
He faces 13 felony charges, the most sweeping of which is a violation of the state's RICO laws used to fight organized crime. He will be fingerprinted and for the first time have
his mugshot taken. Bail for number 45 was set at $200,000 on Monday, and a court filing signed
by both the district attorney and Trump's lawyers includes strict rules on witness intimidation,
including posts or reposts on social media.
Trump has repeatedly decreed all indictments against him as a witch hunt and called out
DA Fannie Willis as corrupt. His presidential campaign is leaning into the indictments by
selling apparel with a fake mugshot stamped not guilty. Trump's indictment may be a big
current event, but it's a relatively small eternal event.
This does not mean we shouldn't care at all, but we should not let it steal our focus from things of eternal significance.
Philippians 3, verse 20 says,
But our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Lord Jesus Christ. The 15th annual BRICS Summit kicked off yesterday, and to save you some thinking, that stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Reportedly on the week's
agenda, the war in Ukraine, tensions with the West, and potential new members. Over 20 countries,
including Saudi Arabia and Iran, have applied
to join. The group isn't necessarily besties, see India and China's simmering border conflict,
but they're united in their desire for economic protection and a greater voice amid the chorus
of G7 nations. Awkwardly, two of the five leaders weren't seated at the table on day one.
Russian President Putin joined virtually to
avoid being arrested under an international warrant for war crimes, and China's President
Xi was inexplicably absent despite having met with South Africa's president earlier that day.
Here's a verse to consider whether seated among friends or acquaintances.
Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight
of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Romans 12, verse 17-18.
Broadly speaking, there are two approaches to translating the Bible, translating words versus
translating phrases. The result is over 450 different English translations,
and 2 Kings 4.29 reading, gird up your loins, don't lose a minute, and everything in between.
The Christian Standard Bible was translated using optimal equivalence, pursuing both linguistic
precision and readability. That means you're reading the same words spoken in 30 AD,
except when word-for-word translation breaks the English language.
So quit procrastinating. Gird up your loins and check out all the CSB has to offer.

In other brews, here's a rapid round of updates.
Guatemala's tumultuous presidential election concluded Sunday with P.K.,
President's kid, Bernardo Arevalo, winning 58% of the vote in a runoff against former
First Lady Sandra Torres. Arevalo ran on a left-wing anti-corruption platform
as an alternative to the political elite.
Corruption, poverty, gang violence,
and election irregularity lawsuits
will be top of the to-do list
after his inauguration in January.
American Sha'Carri Richardson won the 100-meter
at the Track and Field's World Athletics Championships
with a
time of 10.65 seconds. We're pretty sure if she flapped her arms, she would have started flying.
Richardson, who missed the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 after testing positive for marijuana,
raced from the less desirable outside lane, making her victory even more impressive.
Russia and India's race to land on the moon's unexplored South Pole has been
a nail-biter. Russia's Luna 25 spacecraft crashed into the moon Saturday after a communication
interruption opening the door for India, which says its Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft will attempt
a dark side of the moon landing this morning. We're excited to hear if they find moon penguins.

New U.S. intelligence indicates that Russia will successfully prevent Ukraine from recapturing the city of Melitopol and severing Russia's land bridge to Crimea, the primary objective of its
counteroffensive. Ukraine faces scrutiny for failing to spin victory out of tens of billions
of Western dollars, including American-designed
F-16 fighter jets newly promised by the Netherlands and Denmark.
Scooch over, Pink. It's Blue's turn. Blue Beetle, the first DC movie to star a Latino superhero,
earned $25.4 million over the weekend, just enough to dethrone Barbie from her four-week reign, $21.5 million as number
one. Meanwhile, the other half of Barbenheimer set a record as the highest-grossing movie to
never hit the number one spot, besting 2016's Sing. That's all we have for today. Thanks so
