Today we're talking about old and new headlines out of Eastern Europe, tech updates that not
everyone likes, the Pope's Canadian Apology Tour, and other top news for Wednesday, July
27th.

Here's the quote of the day.
Take time to see the quiet miracles that seek no attention.
John O'Donohue.
Let's start with some espresso shots.
From the 1800s to the 1970s, an estimated 150,000 Indigenous children in Canada were forced into
government-funded boarding schools meant to assimilate them into Canadian Christian culture.
Many were physically and sexually abused, and more than 4,000 died. About half of the
schools were run by the Catholic Church, and Pope Francis is in Canada this week to humbly beg
forgiveness for the evil committed by the schools. The Pope is being warmly received by many
Indigenous leaders who are grateful for the acknowledgement and validation of the crimes
committed. Others want more than just a week-long apology tour and are asking what concrete steps
the Church will take to make amends.
Canada's government acknowledged its own role in the abuse earlier this year, agreeing to a $31.5 billion settlement with indigenous communities.
We live in a world marred by sin.
Even while we work to promote accountability and redemption here on Earth,
we can rest in the knowledge that a day is coming where sin will be impossible and regret a distant memory. Proverbs 28.13 says,
the one who conceals his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them will find
mercy. While most headlines out of Eastern Europe continue to seesaw, one new update is out of this world.
With Russia re-invading Ukraine's south, Ukraine's non-NATO neighbor, Moldova, is re-anxious about Russia crossing its borders.
For the rest of the EU, worries over natural gas supplies are reigniting after the flow of the Nord Stream pipeline was reduced to 20% due to what Russia deemed technical issues.
The slowed flow sent European gas prices surging
and prompted EU governments to agree to a gas ration for the winter ahead.
Regarding the final frontier, Russia announced plans to withdraw
from the International Space Station after 2024,
setting its sights on cooperation with the Chinese space program
and building its own space station.
The departure ends 25 years of partnership with NASA.
Tensions between world
powers is enough to make anyone anxious, yet because of Jesus' death and resurrection, we can
trust our future is secure no matter what happens. Jesus says in John 14 verse 1,
Don't let your heart be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me.
me. In the ongoing contest for eyeballs, Meta's recent changes have some users avoiding the like button. Recent redesigns of Facebook and Instagram appear to control C, control V, TikTok style,
drawing criticism from annoyed users while including celebrities like Kylie Jenner and
Kim K. An Instagram creator recently went viral for her post, declaring, I just want to see cute photos of my friends. Other Instagram complaints include more ads and
sponsored posts, posts from people you don't follow, and a haphazard rather than a chronological
timeline. Meta isn't the only one dancing for views. Other platforms are offering changes,
hoping to entice more user engagement and double tap into new markets. The NFL announced
its $4.99 streaming platform and Disney Plus revealed that it will now offer R-rated movies.
Here's a verse to consider when your thumb is sore from endless scrolling.
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just,
whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable,
if there is any moral excellence, and if there is anything praiseworthy, dwell on these things.

Meanwhile, President Biden said he's feeling better every day and hopes to be out of isolation by week's end.
Myanmar executed four political prisoners on Monday, sparking international outrage. Though the military-led government has been suspected of thousands of extrajudicial killings since their coup last year,
these hangings are the country's first official executions in decades. All four killed were
activists for democracy in the country. California is on fire, again. A fire outside of Yosemite
National Park exploded into the state's largest
fire of the year over the weekend, fueled by dry conditions and high temperatures,
forcing thousands to evacuate. California isn't the only state with fire concerns.
A blaze the size of Connecticut is burning in Alaska.

was infectious, dragging Target and other retail stock down about 5% and the entire market down
about 1%. Elon Musk can't seem to flap away from the spotlight. This weekend, reports surfaced of
an affair between Elon Musk
and the wife of Google's co-founder, Sergey Brin. In a rebuttal tweet, Musk denies the allegations,
saying he doesn't have time for shenanigans and that he still is friends with Brin.
