Today we're talking about a shooting at a 4th of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois,
sports updates from over the weekend, protests in Akron, Ohio, and other top news for Wednesday,
July 6th. Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over.
Here's the quote of the day. Revival is a renewed conviction of sin and repentance,
followed by an intense desire to live in obedience to God. It is giving up one's will to God in deep humility.
Charles Finney
Tragedy struck a 4th of July parade in the affluent Chicago suburb of Highland Park, Illinois.
Three-quarters of the way through the parade, a man started shooting a high-powered rifle from a rooftop,
killing seven people and injuring 30 more.
Victims' ages range from 8 to 85 years old.
After an hours-long search and a brief chase
Monday evening, police apprehended a 21-year-old who was charged with seven counts of first-degree
murder yesterday evening. No motive has been released. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker called
the event devastating before advocating for gun reform, saying that while the Fourth of July comes
once a year, mass shootings have become a weekly American tradition. The shooting comes just over a week after President Biden signed a bipartisan gun reform bill, the most
significant gun legislation in decades. We live in a world marred by sin. Even while we work to
promote accountability and redemption here on earth, we can rest in the knowledge that a day
is coming where sin will be impossible and regret a distant memory. Revelation 21 verse 4 says,
He will wipe away every tear from
their eyes. Death will be no more. Grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous
things have passed away. Big breakup news kicked off the holiday weekend. USC and UCLA are planning
to leave the PAC-12 and play ball with the Big Ten in 2024, leaving the
West Coast Conference scrambling to remain relevant without its two most elite brands.
The Brooklyn Nets super team is also breaking up with superstars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving,
expected to follow recently traded James Harden in joining new teams.
Denver Nuggets and star Nikola Jokic are staying together. Jokic just signed the NBA's largest
ever contract. To round out the weekend, Joey Jaws Chestnut earned his 15th title in the annual
Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. Chestnut scarfed down 63 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes, all while
donning a medical boot and having to put a protester in a chokehold mid-bite. Who said
competitive eating isn't a sport? The world has different priorities than God, and many eternally insignificant things, like who's playing for what team, can be compelling
for a season. These things may not be wrong to follow, but neither should they consume our
attention. Colossians 3, verse 2 through 4 says, set your mind on things above, not on earthly
things, for you died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. The mayor of Akron, Ohio declared a state
of emergency after protests of Jalen Walker's death at the hands of police turned violent
late Sunday night. On June 27th, police attempted to stop Jalen Walker, a 25-year-old black man,
for a traffic violation. A car chase ensued and Walker repeatedly fired a gun before jumping out
of the moving car. Police chased him on foot for about 10 seconds, but when Walker reportedly turned towards them
and reached for his waist, eight officers shot him over 60 times. He was unarmed when shot,
but a gun was later found in his car. The local police union says officers were correct to believe
there was an immediate threat of danger, but protesters say this is just the latest example
of police brutality towards Black men. Here's a verse to consider when mourning violence and praying for peace.
The prayer of a righteous man is very powerful in its effect.
James 5, verse 16.

In other brews, here's a rapid round of updates.
With the capture of Lysychansk, Russia now controls the Luhansk province
and is now shifting focus to the neighboring Donetsk province.
President Biden announced $800 million more in weapons aid to Ukraine
and received a letter from WNBA star Brittany Greiner, Yansk province. President Biden announced $800 million more in weapons aid to Ukraine and
received a letter from WNBA star Brittany Griner, who has been detained in Russia since February,
begging him to not forget her and other American detainees.
Monkeypox continues to spread in the U.S. with roughly 460 cases in 30 states.
Vaccine supplies for COVID, whoops, we mean monkeypox, were dangerously close to zero in New York City and Washington, D.C., prompting the Biden administration to step in to rush the
distribution of tens of thousands of doses. Airlines hit some turbulence this weekend,
but avoided spilling too many ginger ales. Roughly 9 million people hit the skies this weekend,
a pandemic-era record, and while staffing shortages, pilots picketing, and bad weather
caused thousands of delays and 1,500 cancellations, this was far fewer issues than expected.
A 22-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder following a shooting at a shopping
mall in Copenhagen, Denmark on Sunday. Two 17-year-old Danish people and a 47-year-old
Russian person were killed. Four other people were seriously wounded. Officials believe that mental health issues were behind the attack rather than terrorism.
Despicable Me is churning out sequels quicker than the Fast and Furious franchise.
This weekend, Minions, Rise of Gru, the fifth installment of the series,
grossed $125 million and set a new 4th of July weekend box office record,
giving theaters a boost after light years less than out-of-this-world reception last month.
