Today we're talking about former President Trump's arraignment, a settlement between
JPMorgan Chase and the victims of Jeffrey Epstein, a protest of new Reddit fees, and
other top stories for Wednesday, June 14th.
Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over.
Here's the verse of the week.
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.
Philippians 2 verse 3
Let's get started with some espresso shots.
Former President Trump pleaded not guilty yesterday to 37 federal charges related to classified documents found at Mar-a-Lago.
He's the first U.S. president to face federal
criminal charges, which he has decreed as a politically motivated witch hunt.
Yesterday, Trump arrived at a heavily secured courthouse that prepared for large-scale civil
unrest but only saw small squabbles between pro-Trump and anti-Trump groups.
Reporters outnumbered protesters outside the courthouse. The former president was taken
into custody and digitally fingerprinted before entering his not-guilty plea to a magistrate judge. He was released
without travel restrictions and was not required to post bond, but was told not to communicate with
potential witnesses. After the arraignment, Trump visited with supporters at a local Cuban restaurant
before flying to New Jersey for a campaign fundraiser. While you likely have no control over former President Trump's legal troubles,
you can control how you speak about them.
Leave others with no doubt of your love for everyone involved,
even for people whose actions you do not support.
Luke 6 verse 32 says,
If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?
Even sinners love those who love them.
what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.
J.P. Morgan Chase has reportedly reached an agreement to settle a civil lawsuit with victims of Jeffrey Epstein. The suit claims that America's largest bank knowingly ignored
red flags and supported the crimes of Epstein, who had accounts at the bank between 1998 and 2013 and was convicted of soliciting
prostitution from a minor in 2008. Chase CEO Jamie Dimon testified that he had no personal
role in Epstein's accounts, instead pointing fingers at a former executive. Chase issued a
bank statement saying Epstein's behavior was monstrous and that the settlement is what's
best for all parties, especially the survivors, who suffered unimaginable abuse. Once finalized, the settlement will reportedly include a $290
million payout to roughly 100 women. Chase faces a separate, similar lawsuit in the U.S. Virgin
Islands, where Epstein owned a private island. A move towards justice does not erase the pain
of the victims. Pray that God would redeem those hurt in this situation and those who experience abuse in a broken world.
Psalm 34 verse 18 says,
The Lord is near the brokenhearted. He saves those crushed in spirit.
Reddit is facing a user revolt.
Reddit is facing a user revolt.
The Popular Forum website announced new changes for third-party apps that allow users to access the site from their devices.
These apps, like Apollo and Reddit is Fun, say the fees will put them under.
Approximately 4,000 subreddits, or user forums, have gone dark in protests.
Reddit relies on volunteer moderators to manage the site,
and these mods are flexing their muscles. They're concerned that the loss of the third-party apps will threaten access and control over their communities. Reddit says it needs tighter
oversight on its data and how it's being shared. They're also not crazy about other companies
using their vast trove of data to train their generative AI tech for free. TLDR, it's a David versus Goliath
showdown, and the results will be interesting. Here's a verse to consider when changes in your
phone apps result in your heart skipping a beat. Don't store up for yourselves treasures on earth,
where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves
treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys,
and where thieves don't break in and steal. Matthew chapter 6 verse 19.
We believe that the news can actually be a force for good, helping people find rest and comfort
in Christ while spurring them on to loving action, instead of, you know, creating division,
anger, and a persistent feeling of impending doom. For example, keep this in mind while listening to today's news.
Even if everything goes wrong, your eternity is secure.

In other brews, here's a rapid round of updates.
Annual inflation declined to 4% in May, the lowest price increase in two years.
Annual inflation declined to 4% in May, the lowest price increase in two years.
It wasn't all good news.
So-called core inflation, everything except volatile food and energy prices,
remained stubbornly high at 5.3%.
Prices are up most on car repairs, car insurance, and vending machines, while gas prices and health insurance are both down more than 20% over the last year.
Yesterday in Nottingham, England,
three people were stabbed to death and then three people were injured by a man attempting to run them over. Police have arrested a 31-year-old man on suspicion of murder in connection to the
horrific and tragic attacks, which they say are related. Counter-terror police are investigating
and no motive has been publicly released.
Man Plans Book Bans Ban Nope, that's not a Seuss title.
Illinois Governor Pritzker signed a new law preventing libraries that remove books for partisan or doctrinal reasons from receiving state funding starting in 2024.
The first-of-its-kind law is seen as a response to a growing movement in some Republican-led states to remove
certain books from school libraries and curricula. A portion of I-95 in Philadelphia collapsed Sunday
after a tanker truck carrying 8,500 gallons of gasoline crashed and exploded under an overpass.
Authorities are working to identify one body recovered from the wreckage.
Around-the-clock repair efforts on the heavily trafficked highway have begun, but it's expected to take months to complete.
