Today, we're talking about Ukraine's counter-offensives, a sonic boom, a surprising Gulf merger, and
other top news for Wednesday, June 7th.
Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over.
Here's the quote of the day, we must never underestimate the power of the prayer that
is lifted up by wonderful saints all around the world.
Will Graham.
Let's get started with some espresso shots.
Ukraine's long-anticipated counteroffensive appears to have begun.
Ukraine attacked using mechanized brigades with heavy battle tanks alongside conventional
troops to assault several locations
in southern Donetsk, where Russian troops are heavily entrenched. Ukraine may be attempting
to exploit gaps and weaknesses in the fortified Russian lines after weeks of stalemate.
Ukraine's holding cards close to the chest, but Russia claims they fought off the attacks, destroying 16 tanks, 26 armored fighting vehicles, 14 vehicles, and killing 250 Ukrainian troops.
Meanwhile, thousands were forced to flee their homes after the collapse of a major hydroelectric dam on the Dnipro River in southern Ukraine.
Ukraine claims Russian mines blew up the dam to stymie the Ukrainian counteroffensive. Ukrainian President
Zelensky declared the destruction the largest man-made environmental disaster in Europe in
decades. As the war in Ukraine continues, it's easy to become discouraged and focus our attention
elsewhere. Do not cease praying for a resolution to this conflict and others throughout the world.
Do not cease praying for a resolution to this conflict and others throughout the world.
Colossians chapter 4 verse 2 says,
Devote yourselves to prayer. Stay alert in it with thanksgiving.
Yesterday, the PGA Tour and Live Golf ended their bitter dispute by merging. Live Golf announced its pro-golf tour
in 2021, upending the golf world by driving straight into PGA Tour territory with controversy
in tow. Funded by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, or PIF, a sovereign wealth fund containing
$620 billion, yes, that's billion, Liv drew criticism for the connection to
the Saudi government and its alleged human rights abuses. Liv pitched ridiculous riches for golfers
to leave the PGA, like Tiger Woods' $800 million invitation, and brought antitrust allegations
against the PGA Tour, leading to lawsuits and investigations by the Department of Justice.
Now, the former rivals plus Europe's biggest tour, DP World Tour, will form one organization funded by the PIF.
Multiple PGA players scrambled to express disbelief and disappointment, golf clapping back at the shocking decision.
Here's a verse to consider when you find yourself on an unlikely team.
Above all, love each other deeply because love covers a multitude of sins.
Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.
Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others
as faithful stewards of God's grace in
its various forms. 1 Peter chapter 4 verses 8 through 10. A private plane flew into heavily
restricted airspace over the U.S. Capitol on Sunday, prompting a swift response from fighter
jets. So, if you were somewhere between
Northern Virginia and Annapolis, Maryland, that noise you heard was a sonic boom.
The plane was headed to New York from Tennessee, but took an erratic flight path over D.C.
Six fighter jets were scrambled from three military bases only to find the pilot slumped
over in the cockpit, possibly due to the cabin losing pressure
at high altitudes. The jets fired flares and repeatedly radioed the pilot but were unable to
get his attention. The plane ultimately crashed into a wooded mountain in Virginia, killing the
pilot and all three passengers. Crash site investigators warn that the highly fragmented
wreckage will likely prevent them from learning much more.
Even as we breathe a sigh of relief that there was likely no nefarious intent,
we mourn with the families of those on board this flight.
Psalm 34, verse 18 says,
The Lord is near the brokenhearted. He saves those crushed in spirit.

Apple unveiled its Vision Pro headset, a ski-goggle-esque computer that allows wearers to choose between fully immersive virtual reality and less immersive augmented reality.
It runs on a new operating system controlled by your hands, voice, and… eyes?

The Securities and Exchange Commission, or SEC, is coming for crypto. The SEC sued Binance,
the world's largest crypto exchange, on Monday, and then sued Coinbase, the United States' largest crypto
exchange, on Tuesday. Among other things, the SEC accuses both companies of failing to register
as trading platforms. The companies say the SEC's rules are unclear.
Yesterday, Prince Harry became the first British royal to testify in court since 1891 in a case against Mirror Group Newspapers, or MGN, which owns multiple news tabloids.
Harry and some 100 other celebrities allege that MGN illegally hacked their phones.
MGN has admitted wrongdoing in one instance, but is contesting most claims brought by the
Prince, who faces cross-examination today.
The House Oversight Committee announced its plans to hold FBI Director Christopher Wray
in contempt of Congress over the agency's refusal to turn over a subpoenaed document
allegedly showing that then-VP Biden received a $5 million bribe. The FBI called the
contempt vote unwarranted as they offered to show the document in a secure reading room at the
Capitol. The Barbie movie is pink. Like, really pink. So pink, in fact, that the construction of
its set created a global shortage of fluorescent pink paint,
which is now finally back on the shelves.
Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling,
is set to hit theaters next month.
That's all we have for today.
