Today we're talking about the Senate's post-recess agenda, international border relations, a Republican-led Republican impeachment in Texas, and other top news for Wednesday, September 6th.
Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over.
Here's the quote of the day.
God does not need your good works, but your neighbor does.
Martin Luther.
Let's get started with some espresso shots.
Senators are removing their out-of-office auto replies as they return from an August recess this week.
Their first order of business? Avoiding a government shutdown.
Every year, Congress has until October 1 to pass the next year's budget.
And just about every year, they're late.
Without a budget, the government will shut down at the end of September, bringing everything to a halt,
including the House's potential impeachment inquiries against President Biden to a halt.
impeachment inquiries against President Biden to a halt. With a tight deadline and much disagreement,
including national disaster relief and funds for Ukraine, it's expected Congress will try to pass a continuing resolution to keep Uncle Sam funded while they continue debating. They'll need to find
common ground soon. Budgets across the board will be cut 1% if the 12 appropriations bills used to
fund federal agencies like defense and transportation aren't passed by 2024. Be quick to point to God
and give him the credit for your hope, strength, and love during times dominated by uncertainty and
fear. Even in the midst of chaos, our eternity is secure.
Philippians 4 verse 6 says, Don't worry about anything, but in everything,
through prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
Friction is building on some of the world's most watched borders.
On Monday, President Zelensky replaced Ukraine's defense minister, Alexei Reznikov, who has led the military since before Russia's invasion.
While Reznikov has not been directly accused of corruption, allegations of bribery have plagued the defense ministry, and the ousting is seen as Kyiv signaling its
low tolerance for corruption to Western partners. Meanwhile, Kim Jong-un is planning a rare trip
outside North Korea, likely by armored train, to meet with Vladimir Putin and discuss selling
weapons to a weapons-strapped Russia. To the south, Chinese President Xi will skip this week's international G20 summit
in India, following frosty Chinese-Indian border disputes. Tens of thousands of troops are
currently in a standoff in the Himalayas over land which both nuclear powers claim as their own.
As nations fight over temporary borders, followers of Christ rejoice in our eternal inheritance,
the entire world made completely new, where we will live and reign with our Savior forever.
Matthew 5, verse 5 says,
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
A high-profile impeachment trial began in Texas yesterday. In May,
the Republican-controlled Texas House of Representatives voted 121 to 23 to impeach
the state's attorney general, Ken Paxton, also a Republican, on offenses including bribery,
also a Republican, on offenses including bribery, misuse of public funds, and obstructing justice.
Most of the 20 articles of impeachment concern whether Paxton abused his office to benefit a wealthy donor. The donor, who was himself indicted last summer for making false statements to a bank,
reportedly employed Paxton's alleged mistress in exchange for political favors.
Yesterday, Paxton pled not guilty in a fiery opening day. He has previously said the charges
are based on hearsay and gossip. A two-thirds majority is required to remove Paxton from office.
Texas has 31 state senators, but only 30 will participate. The 31st is Paxton's wife, who will attend but not
deliberate or vote. Here's a verse to consider when you're being asked to determine someone's
guilt or innocence. Do not show partiality in judging. Hear both small and great alike.
Do not be afraid of anyone, for judgment belongs to God.

Burning Man attendees were finally able to burn rubber.
Kinda.
The previously impassable road leading out of the Nevada desert reopened Monday,
and attendees formed a 10-car-wide highway averaging about one mile per hour along the five-mile path back to the pavement.
Many stayed one more night to watch the aforementioned man burn.
They came all this way, and to avoid the traffic.
