A special edition of the podcast.
We're calling it Friday Feedback.
That's the email address.
And we figure we just give you something on a Friday during the holidays and give everybody else on the show a break from all of this.
Where pretty much everything's on the table.
We go through the emails, very mailbag style.
So let's get started.
Let's go with one for Saruti here before we get started.
Okay.
Saruti's career ambitions.
Big fan of the pod, been listening for a few years now.
Wife joins in from time to time when life advice comes on five,
10 pickup comp is 14 year old Ricky Rubio.
When he played for you haven't took,
but Alona,
I don't know.
Uh,
Rubio is probably the nastiest 14 year old in the world,
by the way.
So that's a good,
that's a pretty good comp.
I couldn't help,
but notice over the last few months,
Rudy's been getting more airtime, becoming more involved in segments and dishing out takes.
Has that been intentional?
And is Saruti angling to be on the talent side of things?
Would love to know what his career ambitions are.
Uh, I think I've talked about this before, so I'll keep it brief.
But, you know, back when I was at ESPN, when we were at ESPN radio and, you know,
I was working on, you know know the show with you and Scott
and then you and Danny
and then Will ultimately
and even a little bit
on Mike and Mike
like I always kind of had
like the hosts were always like
you know
gracious enough
or trusted me enough
I guess to like at least
say a few things
on the mic here and there
when I started
it was never really
like a goal to be like
I want to host my own show
I know a lot of people do that
there's certainly a lot of people
behind the scenes
anywhere whether it be
radio, podcast, TV
that like want to be on the air I think one of the things that Ryan likes about me is that I was like, never like really pushy about that stuff. It just kind of happened naturally. And then I did get that opportunity to host my own thing with Brian Scalabrini back in the intercom days. days and i i you basically like you have to do it i had to do it i wanted to just try it out and see
what it was like my kind of i felt like my time at espn was kind of over then or i wanted to just
do different things um and to be honest with you i kind of hated it i sort of i sort of hated
hosting a show every day especially live for two hours so uh the answer is no like i don't really
want to just i like being behind the scenes and coming up with show ideas and working with you but i also do like to do some stuff on my own so i guess there's a
balance there like i love hosting the soccer pod that's going to come back hopefully uh after
football season the gambling feed with paul carr where we just do out you know we talk about epl
we talk about the u.s men's national team um so i it's like a hybrid thing i like to do a little
bit of both so if you were to ask me like do i want to have my own ringer show the steve seruti
podcast the answer would be no but i like you know it's it's cool like when bill thing. I like to do a little bit of both. So if you were to ask me, like, do I want to have my own ringer show, the Steve Cerruti podcast, the answer would be no, but I like,
you know, it's, it's cool. Like when Bill asked me to like hop on to talk about some magic thing,
or you do that, or, you know, Bill asked me how to talk about the world cup. Like I love doing
that stuff. But as far as like having my own show and branding myself as talent, I actually didn't
really like it that much. Yeah. I look, I'm, you know, I'm a huge fan of you and have been from,
uh, a very early time because
usually with me it takes just it takes anybody i work with like it takes a little while for me to
warm up to you because i kind of feel like all right you get to prove to me why you are somebody
that i'm going to listen to or be inspired by you know like a lot of hosts need a ton of inspiration
to kind of do it every single day you know know, back to the radio days, like there's certain people I worked with and they needed
to have somebody kind of like put the gas in them to get them going.
And I'm different.
I kind of walked through the door knowing exactly what I want to do.
So there's very few things that somebody else is going to get me to go like, no, maybe you
should try this or maybe this.
And Suri is one of the few people in my life that I've ever been like, actually i think that's a better way of doing it or i like that idea better than my idea
originally and it wasn't like saruti and i were buddies and there's a massive age gap there but
i just started noticing him in the pre-show meetings where i was like this guy just has a
really really good instinct for what works and i think it is a credit to you because you know i'll
sound like the old guy here for a second uh which isn't that rare but
you know when i started to get on the air it was impossible it was impossible and the line i use
all the time is that back then the line was long but it was it was thin and now the line is short
but it's really wide because everybody can be on the air tomorrow if you want to be.
And so sometimes I'll see somebody think they're backdooring it where it's like,
wait, you kind of just worked here and now all of a sudden you're going to have a podcast.
There's still some skills that you have to learn to know how to do this or at least do it well.
And I guess there's other people that are just incredible naturals and they're just gifted and it works out. back to like the espn days i'd always be a little like well what does this person want to do
and they're hitting buttons and running running a board or something and they'd be like well i want
to be on the air and i'd be like well why the fuck are you running the board like what but then they
would think oh well at least i've got my foot in the door i'd be like you have your foot in the
door the number one sports station in the arguably in the world but the weird thing is is
towards the end of espn it almost felt like all the rules are out the window yeah yeah it just
i still have i don't know if it annoyed me or if i admired the shit out of it like three guys that
were behind the scenes just started a podcast and put it on espn's podcast network like they
just started uploading it and Oh, like Rogues?
Yeah, like what are these guys doing?
And then all of a sudden they were telling people,
hey, we've got an ESPN podcast.
Am I getting that story right or wrong, Sri?
Because it certainly doesn't bother me,
especially at that stage of my career.
I remember just being like,
those guys have some balls on them.
I don't think you're wrong.
I think the other thing too about like being there was
like a lot or initially it was like no producer should ever be on the air and then like every
producer started talking on the air and like there's like a balance like some of them work
and some of them don't some of the sometimes i think it's just like i don't have anybody to talk
to i'm a solo host let me just throw it to my producer who like you know doesn't really have
anything to say really um so i don't think you're
really wrong uh but it's you're right like well i guess i guess it's there isn't no right or wrong
because there have been plenty of people who've been behind the scenes that have then made it
like you know i mean michelle smallman for example is she's incredibly talented she was
the producer of rossillo and canal and she's now hosting the morning show on espn radio
and she's she's fucking awesome she's really good at her job so she's, she's fucking awesome. She's really good at her job. So she's talking, she's taking a weird path. There are people that start local and just never leave
and they just get stuck kind of in their local market. For me personally, like I, you know me,
and I, I always like to, I like to think that I, I am a realist and I am self-aware enough.
Like I always preach being self-aware. I don't think I was on, you talk about it coming naturally
to you. I don't think like doing segments, you talk about it coming naturally to you.
I don't think like doing segments as talent
comes naturally to me.
I think I'm better at just like looking
and thinking about angles
and like feeding them to people
and talking things out
than I am like having my own segment on something.
As good as I,
as much as I get excited about the magic minute,
like I know that segment isn't perfect
and like I'm not the best host per se.
I just have a lot of passion. So like I'm self-aware enough to think and I'm not the best host per se. I just have a lot of passion. So I'm self-aware enough to think I'm not the most talented host. I am not. So it does not
come easy to me. Whereas I think for a lot of people, the gift of gab, it does come easy to
them. I'm just better, I think, working with hosts and working with people in a room of people who
are kind of on the same page to come up with a good show. So I like that being a
hybrid producer slash also contributing on the air. I explain this to anyone that asks me about
you. You're the best combination of understanding the on-air person while not wanting the credit
of anyone I've ever worked with. I've never seen a combination like you and like the ESPN part
of it has a lot to do with it. Cause people will just listen to this and be like, I can't believe
Kyle was sitting right there while Rosillo said this about Cerruti, but I know Kyle understands
it. Uh, well, Kyle's, but Kyle's like better talent than I am. I mean, Kyle, like this,
Kyle's on life advice, but it's, but it's spurts spurts you know like my my parents have still don't know what i do
i mean i've been like wait so ryan who and so like they still like like i guess they want to tell
their friends about it and then my grandma who was just like you should totally have your own show
i'm like absolutely not no way it wouldn't work i'd be in trouble it'd be like episode two and
have nothing to say like it has to be this way. So like the, both people,
both like my groups in my life where my family have are totally way off base.
I'm like,
just trust your instincts,
buddy.
You're where you're supposed to be.
Don't like,
you're not,
don't try to climb any higher on the microphone ladder.
Just stay right where you are.
I think the cool thing about the ringer.
And I,
I thought this even before I started working here is that like a lot of people wear a lot of different hats and you know you can a lot of people are like you
know writers or they're editors but they also are like an f1 expert right and they can they can
contribute whether it be writing or on podcasting for them and like a writing thing right there
no no no like he's a writer and an f1 guy so no but i mean they're like you know or they'll or
like people will be uh you know producing podcasts podcasts, but also like write about baseball.
You know, there's just like a lot of people that do different things for like, for example, like Austin Gale is a guy that he was just on Bill's pod the other day.
Like he does like audience engagement for us.
He's like a really, really good numbers guy.
But he's also like a really good football, like analytics guy, like nerd numbers guy.
And I just I think there's a lot of people at the ringer like that.
And I think that's why it's kind of like a cool place to exist i think eventually you could run
you know if there was a company that said hey we want to just start a whole audio department
um you probably wouldn't get it in your 30s but you know with your resume your resume is actually
pretty incredible and then like once you got north of 40 which is the way it works somebody would say like hey this guy should be running this entire audio gray hairs
and i'll be yeah yeah right well you've got i still like to think i look kind of young so
yeah because you know when you start making big money and you don't have any kids there's always
like a little bit of resentment be like that fucking guy you got kids people do always ask
me though like how do you you know how did you get to where you are and i think everybody has their different journeys or whatever paths but one thing that i've
always kind of tried to do and i think why i why you know you like me why i think i've worked well
with bill or other people is like like understand what talent need and want you know it's not about
you like i you not and also like not every producer producing every show isn't the same
type of production like some people need a million ideas and they're handheld.
And other people just need space and some ideas and some structure a little bit.
And I've seen a lot of producers fail because they try to produce every talent like they're
the same exact talent.
And they're not.
Different talent need different things.
You don't need a ton of like, what are we talking about tomorrow?
You need help with what are some ideas off of the stories that I want to talk about?
How can I make this segment better?
It's not like, hey, here's a list of things we're talking about tomorrow.
Read it, basically.
Because there are plenty of people who I met back at ESPN Radio Days who'd be like, all right, I show up.
What are we talking about?
What's the rundown look like?
It's like, hey, man, it's your show.
What do you want to talk about?
You're not going to have a good show unless the host drives what they are interested in. there's a lot of people that don't do that yeah well i've seen both extremes i
worked with a producer who only cared about his ideas and if i didn't use his ideas then he went
in the fucking tank because the show even though i was the one that was on the air it was about
him like that's how he looked at the show he thought he thought it was his fucking show
i was like what hey man i i'm the one that's talking i'm the one that has to like
be into this or not being i get the sweet guy not you like right right and he came and he came from
from a talent who like needed his handheld he needed he needed right constantly feeding him
topics segments ideas whatever even if they weren't good like they just just feed him stuff
right and then i worked with the talent i remember remember one time he came in, it was very early, very early at ESPN.
He hasn't been in forever, but he would like show up and be like, what are we doing today?
Yeah.
That drives me.
Just look at him going, what, how do you, why do you want the job?
Like, how do you, how do you not, how do you not walk through the doors?
I can't tell you what you should be interested in.
Right.
Like, look, the worst day, especially after doing local radio for three years, the worst day day at espn as far as content and what's available and like oh man there's nothing
to talk about there's always when you're doing national and you're there there's always something
there has to be one thing when you wake up the next day that makes you go oh i want to do this
but anyway we could do that content and all that shit later on we have another very simple email along the same lines where it just says straight up
kyle what are your goals to move to poughkeepsie and open a bar no i really what i would love to
do is uh i'd love to stick around in this space i mean working for the ringer was like you know
it was crazy i mean i really got into the audio department because my fucking car died. So I couldn't go like drop off batteries and pick
up coffees. You know what I mean? Like it was, it was a favor that I was getting to be a PA and park
cars and stuff. And then my, my shitty transmission off the 2003 Volvo that I bought just stopped.
And there was no way of fixing it. I used all my money. So I just went to be in the
audio department under Alex Lee. I was like, Hey, can I please, I'm so embarrassed. Like I've been
here like three months and I feel like I'm going to get fired from the job. My uncle got me. Could
you please give me something to do? And so I went and that's where I met like Tate, Jim Cunningham.
So I just been doing this ever since I hadn't looked back. So, um, this is great. I enjoy this.
I enjoy like, um, I've enjoyed learning how to be like better at ProTools.
And, you know, I feel like I can do it pretty quick and I feel like I can teach people to do
it quick and stuff like that. And yeah, I kind of, I like the technical side of it and I like,
you know, I like going to the office. So, I mean, I'd like to just kind of keep doing that for a
little while. Those would be my goals. I mean, you know, I'm called the senior producer now and,
you know, I feel like I'm doing kind of similar stuff that I was doing before, but I think you do stuff long
enough and you just get good at it. So I'd like to stick around doing this. I love being on the air.
I like the Tate's back and get to be on the air there. So doing the hybrid thing is great.
You know, maybe eventually managing, which would, which would let you not have to stay up for all
the games. But as of right now,
you know,
I'm still virile.
I'm 30.
So yeah,
I'll be staying up for games and I'll be given life advice.
So I think that's what I'm doing for the foreseeable future.
I mean,
we work till we're 60,
right.
And you work till you lose your license nowadays.
And that's kind of how it works.
Right.
Through it.
I'm never going to live.
I'm never here.
The end of that.
Yeah,
I think,
well,
the one thing about Kyle too,
is,
you know, there are, there aren't a lot of people who can... So it's very important that Ryan's pod and Bill's pod come out fast.
Timing matters, especially we're recording on Monday mornings.
So we don't have the benefit of recording overnight like some podcasts do.
So for that to come out fast is important.
And Kyle is...
There's very few people that are as fast as getting a pot out as kyle is which is extremely valuable
especially for bill like on a sunday night if he wants to get something out after a finals game or
whatever that's you know it's not it's not easy it isn't easy and there's like you know we're
working some new people in who kyle is like you know help mentor and stuff so like kyle like i
talked about this before kyle wears a lot of different hats just like a lot of other people
here at the ringer so and that's the fast stuff is still fun to do because, you know, you do it. I've been doing
now the same thing now for years and it's, you know, with more or less the same people,
it's still fun to be in the room and hear what they have to say, you know, an hour,
two hours before everyone else gets to hear it. But I still, but then when you guys say goodbye
to you guys, I like crack my knuckles, wait for the files to upload, smoke half a cigarette real
quick, come back and just like beam that shit out.
That's still fun.
So I still like to do that,
which I think some people maybe wouldn't enjoy it,
but I do enjoy like moving it fast.
And I've got two screens now.
So I've just upped the frequency of work too.
So yeah, I'm still killing it over here.
Two screen guy.
Did we hear a Viral in there?
Did we get one of those?
Yeah.
Did I use that correctly?
Yeah, but it was just unexpected.
I'll tell you what,
sex isn't awkward with my wife and that guy from last episode.
Good for you.
Still Vero.
Congrats.
Okay, let's get another one in here because I think it's actually kind of funny that the story was, there's actually an answer to this. Um, how much do you think you
could raise for charity? If you auctioned off a night of grinding NBA tape, watching games at
your house over under 50 grand fifties high fifties, very high, but I will tell you, we actually did
auction this off at ESPN. And I think we got in the high 20s.
It was for Jimmy V stuff, right?
It was Jimmy V.
So instead of coming to watch the show,
I was going to have two strangers get flown in,
stay at a hotel,
then we're going to stay at my house.
And then we were just going to go in the basement
on a Friday night and watch NBA games.
That was a three TV setup in the basement.
And I'm pretty sure i know what happened
but post wyoming it just kind of didn't happen and it just disappeared into ether right like
no one talked to me about it in a very corporate way i also that year i was already i was leaving
months later and i think we all kind of knew the writing was on the
wall. So my priority on that, like they, it just wasn't brought up again, post Wyoming as if I was
going to invite these guys over and be like, you guys want to smoke crack first, or do you want to
watch, do you want to watch the thunder game second? Uh, so I don't, I don't know the fact
that I was never like asked about it. Hey, how do you want to do this?
And then I left and then I moved.
So maybe I'm overthinking it a little bit.
So Rudy may actually know.
I think sometimes Rudy was insulation for me,
not hearing about something that I'd be even more upset about.
And he just wouldn't tell me.
I didn't know that didn't happen.
I remember it.
I just,
I thought,
I thought you went through with it.
I didn't know that it actually happened.
He never did it. So it may have have been that they just gave somebody a refund
well i'm sure i'm sure whoever bid on it was taken care of they weren't gonna like whatever
you think of that kind of stuff they weren't gonna be sorry dude he didn't want to have you over
thanks i will say i think because because there were other things in the past for the jimmy v
where you would you know you have to see people would bid on experiences and one of the experiences I think
was like to hang out with SVP and Rosillo for a show one day and that was I think one of the
highest things that got bidded on as far as like show or or talent experiences so like I want I
don't want to you know start any fights here but I think it was like higher than Mike and Mike it
was higher than Colin like that was the number one one one. So I don't know. I don't remember how much it was for, though. Fifty grand seems high. No, that one was I think the Van Pelt and
I experience was was around 30 grand. And you're right. It actually broke the record,
which was always a weird thing because of the Mike and Mike part of it. And then it was always
weird. Like if Scott and I did something awesome, it like oh wow that's weird um but no I remember
because it was Scott Lawrence from Breakside Brewery some of the best beer in the country
out of Oregon he bid on I think he did it twice that's right yeah and I think the first time
you're like man that's so much money like what a waste of money and the guy scott's awesome
and van pelt of all people i know this is going to shock people in mind he met up with the guys
like went out to dinner with him in west hartford because scott's great i hung out with him out in
montana and introduced him to chris long like we were in the same area and he's like are you in
montana i go yeah yeah i'm here this. And so I've kept in touch with him.
I mean, that guy's invited me to like some incredible stuff.
I just haven't been able to do it.
It's always kind of like, I can't just go to the Trailblazers game tonight.
Although I'll try to this year.
He's like, that's the rarest of rarities is through that and him doing it.
And then all of his kind of hitting it off and his beer is incredible.
I've kept in touch with the guy.
So I'm sure we could
do a decent number for it i just i feel like it'd be a big letdown it's not that exciting
it's just not that exciting to sit there you were you were kind of mad last night you had a little
bit of a not a meltdown but you were just you know a little bit of like a existential crisis
about where what your life was going like why you watched so much hoops and why you were just mad
about some of the calls last night and what you were doing with your life so it's not all glitz
and glamour guys yeah i usually have a couple of those a year where i'm like you're really
gonna fucking do this again this year and i look around my house and go yep so uh i had a few
there's a few emails here like wanting to know exactly what my day is every
single day.
I'm not going to do that.
I don't even know that.
I just don't.
I don't know that it's that interesting.
Okay.
All right.
But off of this, off of the games getting in the way of a lot of things, but it's just,
I don't, I do it because I want to do it.
So let's not pretend too much here.
Is Ryan a dick?
Straightforward question.
Love the show.
Wanted to say thanks for all the advice over the years
from dream retelling to neighborhood feuds,
calling people virgins to snack machine challenges.
Y'all provided some solid guidance
for real life situations.
Greatly appreciate it.
Wanted to inquire about a couple of things.
One, does Ryan know he's a dick?
Two, does he care?
After leaving a friend early in Vegas
and ditching Kyle all those times,
he was obviously looking for a solid hang and being non-apologetic about it every time Ryan seems
like a real dick you can only hide behind the excuse for watching games for so long
seriously we all love sports and I watch at a level that most people can't understand but live
in an age where you can re-watch highlights in the entire game if necessary information can be
extracted from box scores and advanced stats websites well for some of you it can be or you could watch i think we all see through your excuses that watching sports is your job
also the show and the ringer in general stop bringing up the obligatory magic or for real
topic oh jesus just to involve so rudy wow oh man he must have hated wednesday's episode two other
friends who are listeners of the podcast independently brought it up to me i knew it
wasn't me so those are my criticisms shows great so uh all right i'll open it to the to the group here am i a dick
uh i just wanted that silence no i don't think so but i did want a little bit of silence
i don't think so uh i think when you roll in off a off a 10 hour drive to uh to vegas from
california you can be a little prickly. I think, yeah,
I don't think you're a dick though.
I think circumstantially,
like, you know,
hard on the sleeve,
maybe that's what they say.
But no, I don't think you're a dick.
I don't think your, you know,
your zero pH is dickish.
I think it's generally good.
I mean, my wife is always surprised at how,
not surprised is the wrong word,
but she's like, Ryan's actually like a kind, nice person.
Like thoughtful, yeah, surprisingly thoughtful.
Yeah, like you are thoughtful.
And so do I think that there are times
when you are a little bit,
I don't know if it's just like socially unaware
of kind of of how cold...
Not cold. Cold is the wrong word.
Sometimes I just think...
For example, we'll get into interviews...
We're dancing around this.
No, no. I think I've said this before, so this isn't anything new.
But there are times when we'll have somebody hop on the Zoom
or hop on whatever recording app we're using,
and you just want to get into it.
There's really no, like, hey, how you doing?
Like, there's really, it's just like,
all right, you know, we got so-and-so here.
And it is a little bit abrupt,
but I know you're just kind of like,
you're really focused.
Like, you wrote all your notes, you did all your prep,
and you just want to get into what you just prepped on.
So I think that that can be mistaken
for you just like being cold or not,
you know, welcoming or warm or whatever.
But I also know that like,
you do incredible nice gestures for me, Kyle, other people. I remember we had a boss at ESPN who,
you know, you started there. Everybody thinks you're kind of like an asshole, Ryan, right?
Like you're difficult to deal with. And you did something incredibly, I won't say what you did,
but you did something incredibly nice for her. And she was just kind of like stunned. She's like,
actually, Ryan's not, not a mean person. He's actually incredibly thoughtful.
And so I think, I think there's extremes, right?
I don't think you are a dick.
I think that you have some social things
where you're just not aware.
You're not like, let's just yuck it up with the guys,
you know?
Whereas I think Bill, like when he'll come on,
he'll tell a couple of jokes and loosen everybody up.
You're just kind of straight into it.
So I think, I understand why people can mistake you
for being a dick,
but you actually are a thoughtful person.
Yeah, I know I'm not a dick.
I mean, I love the question.
I thought the email was funny.
And you love kids.
You know what you like, too.
You know, you and you're not afraid to just like do what you want to do.
So and I think that's admirable.
Some people are just like cordial and they're like awkward because they're afraid for people
not to like them.
I don't think you really care about that.
No, I, you know, I have a probably a harder time as I've spent so much more time by myself where I'll notice like socially.
I just kind of like, are we going to talk about anything interesting or, you know, that's a perfect example.
Like most people wouldn't say that. Yeah. Wow. No, I mean, I wouldn't,
I'm not dumb enough to be like,
after three minutes of chit chat to say to casual friends,
be like,
are we ever going to talk about anything interesting?
So no.
Um,
but I know that like first impression now, I think I'm getting worse where there'll be like,
I've had this happen to call Thomas's guys and they were just kind of like,
Whoa,
like what's this, what's this fucking deal. And then like somebody will get me to the side or we're forced into a situation. And then I'll hear like the full recovery of like, you
know, who's fucking awesome is like, he's, you know, but if I don't get that second kind of run
through, I know firsthand, since I moved here, there's like a handful of guys that are just like
fuck that guy and that's my fault that's that's not anyone else but i'm just i don't have any
real capacity to just go let's do all the warm-up hit on each other guy stuff like i'm not even
talking about trying to date or anything like that you're not a foreplay guys what you're trying to
say yeah yeah yeah and so and like speaking to the pod, yeah, like it's – I put a lot into that.
You know, I have my Friday routine, which starts at 4, NBA until late.
I usually give myself like one or two bye weeks.
You know, maybe I'll go out, but then I just know like Saturday morning
I want to try to work out before college football.
I'm going to be there for 13 hours because I probably enjoy Saturday more than Sunday.
And then Sunday, it's get out of the house, do whatever I can possibly do before 10.
I boycott the Jacksonville, or excuse me, I shouldn't call it the Jacksonville game
anymore because they're actually good.
But I boycott the London game unless it's something you have to watch like Jacksonville,
Buffalo, or Miami, Kansas City.
And then, you know, I take that right up until 4, West Coast time.
I get out of the house.
I jump in the water.
I do something, read my Napoleon book.
And then I'm right at it prepping out all the stuff.
So then normally Monday morning is 5.30, wake up, and then I'm writing and reading for two straight hours just to even get that monologue tight, which isn't the greatest thing in sports audio.
But a lot goes into that for one person
to have to do it. So after I've written all that stuff out, I don't want a mental break of just
writing it. So yeah, when I get on the call and we're starting the zoom and it's eight o'clock
and I'm like on the dot and it's ready to go, I don't want to talk to anybody. And it's not
because I'm a dick. It's because this is the only way I can do the job. Like I have to do the job
the way I have to do it. You've loosened up with some authors though. You have loosened up with
some authors. You've been like, uh, I have noticed i have noticed that i just want you know i think another thing too was that my job my
professional job since i was 27 years old has had a massive clock in front of me right you know it's
not so much now with podcasts but like everything was regimented to like the second to the minute
it's like you have to be in here and you have to be there and it's not like the military and like
that but i just i don't want to waste time and to the point it's like you have to be in here and you have to be there and it's not like the military and like that but i just i don't want to waste fucking time and to the point though
about you and like watching games and it's just like a fake thing that you don't have to do
there are plenty of people i think that do shows and can do a maybe a fine show not having watched
anything and just kind of making it up and going all vibes stats and that's great congrats to you
like you can you can get by
by just kind of like not really watching things and giving takes and and not caring about like
what you're actually saying that's just not who you are and i i've always just liked and that's
why i've always like even before i even worked on the show i liked watching and listening to svp and
and even now because you you just give a shit about that like even if you're you even if someone
thinks you're an idiot and that your opinion is wrong like it's not because you didn't do the
research or the work so i i you people can act like that's some you know act or something that
you are just using to like make an excuse and i don't know maybe it is to like go out and you just
kind of like you know you like watching games secretly but that's not like a joke you actually
do do that and you do feel weird when you don't watch shit which i think people should feel weird when they go on and talk in a public place about stuff that they didn't
know about or they haven't seen what an incredibly uplifting podcast this has been just everyone's
giving flowers this has been fucking great i know we're way too nice right now but
yeah well let's find some other ones here i'll get another one but yeah like even with my friend
vegas he his sunday was not going to be my Sunday.
And he knew it.
And we've been friends for 25 years.
And he just went.
There was no version of that Sunday where I could have gotten it after it with my friend,
slept there in Vegas, then gotten up and done anything I remotely thought would have been
a good product on Monday morning.
And yeah, I keep kicking the can down the street with this because why I left the radio
show in 17 was like, you can't possibly live your life
like this the rest of your life. But I feel guilty if I'm talking about something that I did not
watch. I feel guilty about it. Yeah. No, I think really quick. So like the Rosillo memes guy sent
out like the, it was like Ryan with one day left of socializing with other human beings in Vegas.
And it's just a SpongeBob. All right, I'm a head out meme, which is pretty funny. And then I think
somebody under that responded,
Ryan, during life advice, treasure your time with your buddies. You'll never get that time back.
Ryan, when talking about his own life, uses absolutely any excuse to avoid real human contact.
Look, I hung out with him on Friday, Saturday day, Saturday night. And then I just went,
you know what? I'm not, if I get shit faced, day shit faced at a sports book or a pool and the games are on, I'm not paying attention to them.
You know, and there was no, there was no five.
It was either zero or 10 on that day.
And I go, I woke up on Sunday.
I was like, I feel great.
I was going to drive back now
and I taped what I needed to tape with YouTube TV.
Absolutely love it.
And then I got caught up and
went two screens and the whole thing but yeah i'll tell you by wednesday as the thanksgiving deal
rolls around i'm like you probably could have hung out with your friend one more day and just said
it but hey man if i were 28 no question i would have figured out a way i would have figured
out a way i would have stayed in vegas but you know you've done it enough it's not like i never
did it you know i did all that already uh and you know there also comes an age part of it where you're
like i just don't i don't know i didn't i didn't want to feel like shit happens to all of us uh
yeah look i mean there's still times where i i clearly am not my age you know where i'll just
be like all right you know tonight is one of those nights the rare occasion that it actually happens
the fact that it's not zero of those a year like some of my other friends i think is still but i still have to like as a guy who's
not married and kids like you still got to kind of go back out there every now and then but um
i'm not i'm not telling you my approach to it is right i'm just telling you what my approach is
and i don't understand how i could ever do this job without making sure i feel good about what
i'm talking
about. And there's other people that I've worked with who could give a fuck. And sometimes I think
they're the ones that did it right. Seriously. Like they've been just as successful, if not more
successful in some cases. I can't do it that way. I just can't. Cause I got into the business late.
I didn't play anywhere. I didn't coach anything. So I felt like, okay, well, if I'm going to stand out,
I have to be the guy that's like really locked in and knows his shit.
And then the funny thing is it's just Rudy's point.
I can, there's nights I watch so much stuff.
And then at the end of the year, I was like,
I was totally wrong about that guy.
So then I'm like, maybe I shouldn't watch anything.
We still have more to do.
We'll get to more of your questions.
But first the Alliance rolls on checking out the latest odds on sportsbook.fanduel.com uh last week looks like saruti kind of went back
kyle huh so what uh winner for saruti winner for me and then uh loser for kyle some of that
some of that shrapnel thrown back your way after how how this has become. The timing did work out well for me.
Totally.
Totally.
I mean, this is karma.
It's whatever.
Just, you know, get back in your hole, guy.
Like, you know, I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
I won't do it again.
And, you know, when you God don't like ugly, all the things, this is what happens.
So I'm going to be perfectly cordial and humble this week and the rest of the weeks going forward.
Could I just say how much this bet has kind of fucked me up?
Because I told the story about how I was at my daughter's first birthday party,
just checking the Georgia score to make sure we were going to hit the over.
You know, I wasn't like, I wasn't not paying attention to it,
but it was on my mind clearly at my daughter's first birthday party.
And I did hit that day.
So great.
I was literally in Zion National Forest, like the park. And I was like having sketchy service. We were going into like
the gift shop to get Wi-Fi because I wanted to check the Georgia under that I had. And I'm
sitting there and like, oh, I got the first half score. I'm like, damn it. Like we're kind of on
pace for the over here. And the entire time while I'm on vacation trying to enjoy nature, I'm worried
about my freaking alliance bet. So don't even though my record's not good, never say I don't care. I do care. It's crazy because you're right. Like
there's not even big money on this thing from our perspective, but just the part of being on the air,
giving out the picks and labeling it as something, although you're still in the black,
if you followed it every time with the payouts on the parlay, but when you're on a losing streak,
it starts like haunting you on Saturday.
You're like, I just want to be right.
I just want to be right.
Okay, so let's do it.
Let's lock in.
Let's give out a winner.
Let's go three for three this week.
What do we got?
You want me to start since I was off, I guess, last week?
I'll kick it off here.
I think I'm going to go.
So this is something I lost earlier in the season.
By the way, did you know that Tennessee scored
on the first play? Are you kidding me? I this is something I lost earlier. By the way, how scared did you know that Tennessee scored on like the first play and you
went,
are you kidding?
I did not.
I didn't,
I didn't,
but I did not feel good when I saw the halftime deal.
I mean,
it's one of those things like when you don't coach,
you say like the,
the wins don't feel as good as the losses feel bad.
That's literally this.
This is,
that's literally,
I love that you're turning into a phone dad too.
You're turning into a phone dad.
Now that you have,
now that you have the kid and we're doing the Alliance,
you're like turning into phone dad. You're missing vac that you have the kid and we're doing the alliance you're like turning into phone dad you're missing vacations and parties yeah right
but when you when you give out the under in the first play of the game is a 75 yard touchdown
yeah you're like sick are you serious yeah but it went under okay yeah only georgia shut him down
after that so um all right i'm gonna do this this was i've done a touchdown pass this one and i lost
i did it with Michael Penix Jr.
It was like,
I think it was three and a half
and he only did two.
They ran for like five rushing touchdowns
in that game.
So it wasn't awesome.
I'm going to go the Jaden.
I'm going to go back to that.
Well,
though,
because I feel really good about this one.
Jaden Daniels over two and a half
passing touchdowns against A&M.
LSU's at home.
I know A&M's defense is good.
Like they're,
I think top 10, pretty much national everything. But Jaden, he's still pushing for this He's at home. I know A&M's defense is good. They're, I think, top 10 pretty much nationally and everything.
But Jaden, he's still pushing for this Heisman thing.
I mean, some would say he should be the Heisman guy.
I know Bo Nix is obviously in the mix as well.
But I think he still wants to put on a show and win this award.
And he's only not thrown three touchdown passes in three games this year.
It was against Florida State in the opener.
It was against Mississippi State.
It was against Alabama.
Now, I know A&M's defense, you could say, is in
the caliber of some of those other teams, for sure.
But I think this is at home.
It's in Baton Rouge. I think he wants to put up
a bunch of numbers to kind of continue
to pad his Heisman case. So, I think he
throws for at least three touchdown passes in this game.
And it's minus 135.
Right.
I wanted to go back to NC State,
not doing it. There's too many vibes in North Carolina and NC State. So, we're going to go with Florida State, Florida. I'm going to see my younger brother who's at Florida State. I'm going to see him this week and just catch up and see how everything's going. We've got tons to talk about, if you know, you know.
and a half at Florida.
So it's basically a one score.
I think they got this.
They're ranked fifth.
And I don't have as many stats as Rudy,
but we're going back to the well.
And I just want to get right with God this week.
So I'm making sure everything's good.
Back to Florida State.
All right.
So that one scares me a bit.
Yeah, Danny, when we had him on on Monday, it was like, I think the Florida winning outright is in play.
Now, that could be him being a fan.
You always just, again, the bestest fan.
I'm pretty sure last time we had Danny on, he didn't love my bet either. And I think that hit. That is true play. Now, that could be him being a fan. You always just, again, the best is the fan. I'm pretty sure last time we had Danny,
he didn't love my bet either, and I think that hit.
That is true.
Say what you want, Danny.
Week one, he lost.
That's true.
Look, new beef already.
Here we go.
I want points this weekend.
I want points.
And I'm taking Ohio State.
We've got to play the big games here.
Give me Ohio State plus the three and a half at Michigan.
A bunch of ways this could go.
Michigan's mad at the world again.
Harbaugh stuff.
They put it on them.
But both these defenses are incredible.
You know, when I watched the Ohio State-Penn State game play out,
the feeling at that time was like, man, what's Ohio State going to do with Michigan?
The court has been better.
Their defense has been off the charts.
But, of course, in the Big Ten, there's going to be a stretch of of four games for any of these teams where you don't play anybody good offensively,
but it's been really good from Ohio State there and then with Henderson kind of rolling here.
It's not even about the matchup. I'm scared to death about Michigan's D-line against Ohio State's
O-line, but just give me three and a half points. That's really what it's coming down to here.
That's it.
In this game, I want the points.
And if you're giving me more than a field goal, I'll take it.
I may regret it immediately where I'm like,
McCord's not going to have any time,
and they're not going to be able to use Harrison,
and the run game is shut down.
All of those things are on the table.
But there's plenty of times in this game where going into it,
you think it's going to go one way, and it doesn't go that way.
I mean, even last year, I still't believe ohio state lost the game the way
they did where it just like looked like they were the better team and then it was just a free-for-all
they missed three tackles and next thing you know it's like wow michigan's putting it on them so
with this game if i'm getting three and a half with these two teams being top three teams, I'll take it. So that's the play for me. Check out the latest
on sportsbook.fanduel.com.
Maybe we'll just stay in this lane
and then switch it up
with something fun at the end of it.
But there was like a bunch of these,
like a handful.
So I'm not going to lose 100 out there.
It's pretty personal.
I think I'm pretty open
about a lot of stuff.
Then there's other stuff that I've likely never be open about just because i don't want to be um so has rassilo
dated in the last few years and the question really is would we even know if he has a legitimate
girlfriend let's say 18 months would it just come up or would he say hey guys i have an update i've been seeing someone
for a little while now essentially he's asking what do you what do you think the protocol would
be if that were to happen i think bill would spill the beans would be like rossillo not watching
games because he's got his girlfriend or something that's just what he did to me but i don't know
i don't know how i would know i don't have no idea it's been years i don't know if you've ever
been in a stretch.
I'm sure you must have been, but I got no clue.
Yeah, my wife asks me all the time.
And I don't know.
I never really know.
Every once in a while, like when we're on the phone,
you'll be like, oh, this thing.
But it's not like, it's not dating.
I don't know.
So I don't know.
And maybe I'm not good enough at picking up the signs,
but I don't think there have been any signs.
I've seen somebody walk around in the back once or twice,
but you have family over. I don't know. There was any signs i've seen somebody walk around in the back once or twice but you like you have family over i don't know you know
there's a couple times where somebody just kind of zoomed past i'm like what was that don't know
although that's definitely for sure yes you're like hey guys i got news to lead the pod off
your boy dating back in the game imagine what a fucking loser i would sound like hey guys it feels pretty good we're
on month three and uh you know i'm not saying we're picking dates but i wanted to make sure
all of you guys know so the pacers rotations can mathren play with you know like no yeah it's not
gonna happen yeah it's a little silly maybe during life advice but uh even then you've chosen not to
so i have no idea are you gonna give a yes or no you've chosen not to. So I have no idea.
Are you going to give a yes or no?
You're saying no to even that.
Yeah, I guess I didn't really even answer that.
I don't know.
There was, there was, I don't really want to get timelines here, but like, I'd say the last thing that was like, Hey,
I guess this is what it is.
You know, she started posting stuff immediately. And I was like, all right. I'm like, I'm not telling this is what it is. She started posting stuff immediately.
And I was like, all right.
I'm like, I'm not telling you to not post this soon
because I'm sketchy.
I'm telling you to not post this soon
because it's going to be...
You're not going to love this.
People are going to fuck with you.
Yeah.
And then she kind of was like, ooh,
you can fucking get a cool podcast.
You think people are going to care?
I was like, all right, cool.
Do whatever you want.
Yeah, I know.
Post away. And then after the first week of posts posts she was like can can i talk to you i was like yeah of course you can what do you want to talk about she's like uh i have a lot
of very disappointing dms and i was like okay yeah cool what do they say it's like one is you
have a woman in every city i was like i would travel more
i'll tell you that much right now i was like i don't i don't i was like people just gonna
fuck with you they're just gonna fuck with you she's like i did not expect this i was like okay
cool like well then don't don't don't don't post anything when you fucking one on two dates
yeah all right whatever i'll leave that alone but yeah let's do something
else here oof yeah let's uh let's do it this is alarming it's been brought to my attention
um actually i feel like i need to get this email to kyle so that he can see it as well. Hold on, Kyle. We're doing this live.
Do I not need to see it?
Yeah, I'll
send it to you too, Saruti.
You know what's really funny is I just went to type in
for Kyle's email address
and it
was, I typed in nephew
first.
Didn't want to hear that.
Yeah. Did you understand that that's not your work email
is not nephew kyle not not the nef 33 at the ringer.com
okay um but don't react yet kyle did you get it did you get get? Yep. You got it. Okay, I got it. There's three images here.
I didn't open anything.
Okay, do you want to not say what they are,
but you can laugh if you need to.
Click on the first one, then left to right.
And then, Saruti, I'll send it to you as well.
Okay.
Okay, so Kyle is...
Okay.
I'm like, I'm so scared right now.
I don't know what's happening.
No, you shouldn't be scared.
Saruti, you should have the email email do you know what I'm talking about
I don't have the email
what did you send it to
that's interesting
Siri's super aggressive
I don't know maybe she heard
I am not sir sir Rudy
for FYI at
Spotify.com
that's amazing people still think that
I love it now I went from being like how could
you possibly think we would have somebody named sir stop yeah and not talk about that more yeah
yeah like that would be coming up all the time if that's what he wanted to be called or what's
the origin of the nickname somebody's gonna be listening to this right now going wait what is it
i thought it was all right so now this is kind of going late the cover are in question do you
know what i'm talking about now yes i don't have any emails so i sent it to you last night
oh yes yes yes yes yes yes yes okay all right so uh male 38 north shore boston area shout out
kowloon. Hoops Comp.
End of career, Sam Perkins.
Boys, first time, long time.
Growing up in the Boston area, I was naturally a Barstool fan since the early website days.
I also discovered Ryan during C's pre- and post-games.
Hey, look at that.
And fell in love with the rapport of the SVP show.
So naturally, when the stream started to cross with the PMT guys,
I was pumped.
It felt like my college friends were becoming friends with my home friends.
Kyle has massive problems with that crossover.
But yeah,
that's,
that's a good way of putting it.
But I've noticed the episode artwork has become growingly unflattering of Ryan.
I get the Colorado show happened.
No,
that was the Utah show in the cashmere,
right?
I liked how I looked in colorado and by
the way if you want some fire f1 pics check out my instagram that was that is exactly how you uh
sold it that is exactly as described
bought and paid for that's great yeah saruti saruti at some point like was right like
you just might like somebody wrote in a friday feedback of being on the bachelor That's great. Yeah. Cerruti at some point was right.
You just might.
Somebody wrote in a Friday feedback of being on The Bachelor.
I'm clearly not hot enough.
So let's get that one out of the way.
Although I think it'd be really funny to just go like.
Now, we don't have to worry about The Bachelor.
Yeah, you have to be on The Bachelor. I'd be so much worse.
No.
What the fuck, dude? I dude taking licenses away yikes that guy's like really old by the way yeah yeah that's what i mean i didn't know what do you think like i'm gonna go on the
female version of it and be like hey flow uh be a lot of die i think i think it'd be incredible
though to go and they'd probably screen you out
though i'd never go on the bachelorette and uh you could sit there and say hey i'd never be the
bachelor because whatever but like most guys would do it so who are you fucking kidding um
but like nathan felder it may be on the bachelorette where you just go it'd be hard
he's the best at staying in character it'd be hard where you would just bring up the worst topics
maybe that's what i'm kind of doing now who knows full circle laney did all right so uh
the colorado show it was the utah show with the cashmere um so basically the artwork on the part
of my take episodes with me on it is me looking progressively worse so the chris paul fan club one i'm jacked trey young is my hero is the next
episode t-shirt and i'm thick 15 pounds yeah less defined just it actually looks the same they just
took like a line out of the arm in the bicep it looks like maybe it doesn't last just the same
the last one the last the last, I'm a sloth.
Yeah,
you're getting to like,
well,
no,
not the last one.
I meant,
I meant the first
and the second one.
It looked like they just,
they just kind of took
a little definition
out of the arms.
The last one is pretty tough.
The last one is,
you're getting,
you're approaching
Brendan Fraser
in the whale territory.
They're like,
it's,
oh,
Jesus Christ.
What?
Interesting movie,
by the way.
I don't know if I was going
to say me in a basketball jersey,
but okay. Interesting is one way of putting it uh that's gross they're making me look worse and
worse and worse honestly i've been getting a little lighter lately which wasn't really the
goal but uh it's gonna be big catches fucking with us right 100 he's got to be the one that
does this right it's nice to know it it doesn't just come at me it comes to you too yeah it is great uh because
that is that is true i'm glad he's not just messing with kyle i guess i wonder how long it
would take for well no i mean i wonder how long how many versions of this would it take for like
everyone to be like what the hell is going on because i i haven't heard a ton about it
yeah i you know what i should go look at the last time i was on when it was posted to see
if anybody even said anything but yeah lakers jersey the last one um you can go and check those
out pod does pretty well i want to give it a listen i'm not sure how many recurring guests
they have but like you've got to be one of the more inside jokey dudes right like
you know i don't i like again i don't know who another example like who comes on
a few times but like you know isn't like a barstool guy i don't know but you got to be more
one of the more inside jokey dudes where they feel like they could even do this yeah i would
say i would probably be a one seat of people that you're comfortable fucking with and the whole
thing which i'd rather be than the person that's not in it maybe the artist hates me no no way
there's got to like this has got to be big cat input there's no way it's not this is it would be it's a very them thing too
yeah he's just like hey real quick uh right before you like they send the guy off there's
one thing if you could just what do we find out the artist he's like he interned for the elizabeth
warren like campaign we're like oh like yeah he fucking hates her solo yeah that checks out yeah
yeah next one next one years ago yeah how where does it go from here the problem is is it doesn't
really matter what my body fat is i just have a double chin i just do i'm just always gonna have
it it's it's hilarious like the rogue thing that's also the other thing you know what though
is somebody sent me a youtube clip of part of my take and the still shot they
use of me is the one that everybody uses where i'm at some roan event in new york city this is
years and years ago and i've got my blazer on and i'm holding up like the new roan long sleeve thing
and i just look like a fat ass i just do like i look i look terrible and then people like to use
that one a lot.
I'm not a photogenic guy,
which I actually think is better because when you see me in person,
you're like,
Oh,
I'm surprised that the good way,
not the bad way.
Yeah.
So I just,
you know,
keep him guessing,
keep him guessing.
You looking for the,
uh,
event picture?
Yeah.
I don't know the pit.
I don't see the picture anywhere.
You don't know the picture?
No, but I mean, I'm staring right now at a picture of you um it is a it is a greenwich
film was festival not a great look in that one great suit and and you're you're just like you
just like you tilt your head back the foot stance right and you got the beers you clearly see the levels to the under chin area and like you gotta stick your head further out i don't look good in pictures
or i may just not you know back to the dating thing normally just back into something every
now and then and they're like what the fuck is that how did you what's that but it's not these
pictures i feel you're i think you're in the same boat like i feel uncomfortable smiling in pictures
and i think i look like an idiot when i smile in pictures because I just don't think I have
a natural smile.
And I think you're the same.
Which is crazy because you're Italian.
Italians love the smile.
I see the Rome picture.
You don't look like a fat ass in the Rome picture.
Oh, you're being nice.
Maybe you could have done some beard shaping.
Oh, I see it.
I see it.
Yeah, that's actually not even close to your.
That's something I wouldn't put it in the top five.
Yeah, that's not.
That's not.
Hey, look, the funny thing is, is nothing's worse than the ESPN promotional headshot that
lived on for a decade.
There's nothing worse than that picture.
That's the worst picture.
And I love that shirt, by the way.
I think it's a Talbot.
But nice.
That picture so bad.
And then we would get pictures.
We would redo pictures all the time at ESPN, if not once a year, more often than once a year.
And I'd go, where are these pictures?
Why are we never using these?
That picture's so bad.
And they would just go, oh, yeah, we're going to talk to somebody.
At one point, I was like, I'm convinced.
I'm like, you are making sure the ceiling exists for me if this is the promotional picture that you're using.
So there's nothing I can do.
All right.
Enough about IG girls over here.
I think that'll do it for an episode.
We good?
You feel comfortable?
I'm good.
I'm just going to keep hitting right on this Google images to see how deep it goes.
There's a lot of good content on there.
There's a lot.
I'm great.
Yeah.
I'm good through the holiday weekend.
Sounds good, gang.
Thanks to Rudy.
Thanks to Kyle.
